Did you know that less than 1% of people have been 100ft underwater? And even less have been in a submarine. Our trip was so much fun! We saw TONS of turtles, fish and sunken ships as well as sunken planes.

“Can we go in a  SUBMARINE ?” One of my best friends' adorable 4-year-old asked me if we could go on a  submarine . And, of course, I said yes!

I headed out to the  ATLANTIS SUBMARINE  with my good friend and her 4-year-old son. He was absolutely ecstatic and so pumped we were going on the  submarine  ride.

This submarine is the world's  LARGEST passenger submarine ! 65ft length x 13ft beam (20m x 4m). Premium: 64-passengers.

We were on the last  submarine ride  of the day: 2:00pm. After we checked in, we got our  submarine  boarding pass and headed down the PORT HILTON pier.

When we got to the shuttle boat (the one that takes you from the shore to the  submarine  drop zone), the kiddo happily gave our submarine boarding passes to the crew. 

It's so wild to see the  submarine  surface and see the Waikiki skyline + Diamond Head volcanic crater.

• Accessibility | How do you board the boat?  Each passenger must be at least 36″ tall and be able to climb down the submarine ladder 100% unassisted

How to Get There

You'll start at the  HILTON HAWAIIAN VILLAGE  (2005 Kalia Road, Honolulu, HI 96815) — not to be confused with the Hilton Waikiki which is on Kuhio Ave.

The actual ticket office is located  BEACHFRONT of Ali'i tower , right beside the TROPICS BAR AND GRILL (2005 Kalia Rd, Honolulu, HI 96815) — not to be confused with “Tropics Restaurant & Craft House” (which is located on Ala Moana Blvd).

Driving FAQ

Parking is available at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We offer a discounted validation chaser card for $4 that is valid for 4 hours from the time you park your vehicle. This validation chaser card is for the self-parking garage only. We do not offer validation for valet. Normal parking fees are $15 per hour for the first hour and $10 per hour after.

TAXI, UBER/LYFT or DROP-OFF? If you are getting dropped off, the drop off location is: 150 Paoa Pl. Honolulu, HI 96815 NOTE: This is a drop off location therefore there is no parking at this address and is a dead end road. This will get you as close to the check-in kiosk as possible while avoiding having to navigate the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Check-in Process

From the  ATLANTIS kiosk   Guests must check-in at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (2005 Kalia Rd. Honolulu HI, 96815) Ticket Office located at the beach front of Alii tower, next to Tropics Bar and Grill 30 minutes prior to their scheduled submarine time.

What to Expect

Your tour will involve two boats, a shuttle boat to take you to the submarine, and the submarine itself. The submarine portion will be 45-50 minutes long, and the total duration will be one hour and 30 minutes.

Example: Check-in: 12:30pm Submarine: 1:00pm Return to shore:  Approximately 2:30pm

The shuttle boat is actually pretty big! The bottom level had a small shop for snacks/drinks and a bathroom. The top level was open air. We headed right to the top level to get some fresh air and the view of the Waikiki skyline.

For those who may get motion sickness, keep in mind that the  SUBMARINE  itself is air-conditioned and very steady. However, the SHUTTLE BOAT that takes you from the shoreline to the submarine drop zone is not. If you are prone to motion sickness, I would recommend taking your ginger pills, tablets, or wearing the seabands with plenty of time. And as you can see, the  submarine  is pretty SPACIOUS too!

The SHUTTLE BOAT is the last bathroom before getting to the submarine. And, on the  submarine ride  (about 45-minutes), there are NO BATHROOMS. This is important if you're traveling with little ones or if you

Over the years living in Waikiki, I've gone on the submarine ride two other times.  This was my 3rd time (yes 3rd!) on the submarine.

The day we went was one of the most clearest days I have ever seen! Keep in mind, visibility varies with ocean conditions. 

(And my friend's 4-year old LOVED this submarine tour! I am now the coolest Auntie of all time. 10 out of 10 would recommend.)

What is SNUBA®?

SNUBA® was created for those who enjoy snorkeling and would like to experience the wonders of breathing underwater. SNUBA is a unique, patented shallow water diving system, bridging the gap between snorkeling and scuba diving.

Is SNUBA® difficult?

SNUBA ® is SNUBA is easy and does not require certification or any previous experience. Even if you have never snorkeled or can’t swim, SNUBA diving is available to you. SNUBA is easily accessible to couples, families, children eight years and older, and seniors. It is a great way for a certified diver to introduce non-certified partners to the underwater breathing experience.

What can I expect?

Every SNUBA tour is guided by a Snuba Program Coordinator. Your guide will familiarize you with the SNUBA equipment you will be using and briefly describe what you can expect in the water.

You will start in shallow water and take whatever time necessary to get comfortable breathing underwater. Once comfortable, you are then taken on a guided underwater tour. During the SNUBA dive you are never more than 20 feet from the security of the raft floating on the surface.

You will get the feeling that you are swimming in an aquarium surrounded by tropical fish. The Hawaiian reefs we SNUBA dive in have abundant marine life, many of which are found only in the Hawaiian Islands.

• If you are driving from Waikiki you need to drive to the H-1 East Freeway. Once the freeway ends it becomes HI-72 (Kalanianaole Highway), keep driving east until you come to the Koko Marina Shopping Center. Turn left into the shopping center before the Texaco gas station. Parking is free anywhere in the shopping center.

The scooters were everything we hoped they would be, we saw tons of fish and the support team was absolutely incredible in ensuring we had FUN. One of the guys found an octopus to bring over for photos and to interact w ... ith. We were in the 2nd scooter group, so I got to hop in for snorkeling both before and after my scooter ride. I saw a turtle while snorkeling and it was neat to watch some of the scooters cruising around. Highly recommend adding this experience to your must do list while on Oahu. You won't be disappointed.

All families were very happy & having so much fun. It was really fantastic trip. I want to revisit when I come back to Hawaii. Thank you for all kindly arrangements.

Can I snorkel on this tour?

You are more than welcome to snorkel before or after your BOB experience. Life jackets are provided for your safety.

Do I need to be able to swim to participate?

No, you do not have to swim while you are on the BOB.

How far in advance should I book this activity?

We recommend booking at least 1-2 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last minute availability is often possible, but limited.

Are there lockers available?

While there are no lockers, basic items can be kept in the office or brought on the boat. Veltra and the activity provider will not be held responsible for lost or stolen property.

Are there photo services available?

Photo and video services are available for purchase at the boat. For single travelers, it is $20 for photos only or $30 for photos and video. For groups of 2 or more people, it is $15 per person for photos only and additional $15 per person for photos and videos. Customers can pay by cash or credit card. If paying by credit card, Hawaii tax will be added on top of the rates but if paying by cash, no tax will be added. *Rates are subject to change.

Submarine Tours

We have two exciting options. The Atlantis Submarine goes completely underwater, and the Reefdancer Semi-Sub stays half in, half out! Both Maui submarine tours bring you close to marine life in the wild in the most comfortable manner possible. You simply relax, fall in love with the fish outside the windows, and stay dry!

Atlantis Submarine descends from the surface to 100 feet below. You will travel to three specific sites underwater. Fish are beautifully abundant in each location. You will even visit the sunken ship, the   Carthaginian ! This huge movie prop was brought to the bottom on purpose to create the base for a coral reef. As you will see when you get there, that plan is working just fine! Your vessel is maneuvered gracefully by a pilot and co-pilot who are naturalists, too. They will answer all your questions and give you great information.

This is one of the excellent Maui submarine tours for the whole family. Kids love matching the fish outside with the fish on the ID cards supplied at each of the giant portholes. There is plenty of space inside the submarine, and the guests are not squashed together like sardines. Speaking of sardines, you won’t see those here in Maui, but do look for schools of manini on the reefs!

The Reefdancer is suspended between sea and air, which gives you the best of both worlds! All year long, the coral reefs here are magical. Let the Reefdancer immerse you in a world of splendor. Spend time in the cool cabin below the water line as the craft explores the ocean habitat. Go upstairs to enjoy the sunlight and sea breezes. What more could you ask for? When the humpback whales are here (December – April), make sure to check up top every once in a while for spouting. Shout out if you see one! On our longer Semi-Sub tour, an excursion scuba diver will bring marine animals to you at the viewing windows! Kids can’t get enough of these up-close encounters.
