Students Trip to Morocco is a 5 Day / 4 Night trip that starts and ends in Marrakech, including a wonderful short experience in the Sahara desert of merzouga. This trip will take you visiting the best attractions in the road toward Erg Chebbi Dunes. You will have many stops for panoramic viewpoints along the high atlas mountains to see and take pictures of some Berber villages on your way to visit The UNISCO WORLD HERITAGE KSAR AIT BEN HADDOU, after that you will continue to the Hollywood city of morocco where you will have opportunity to visit ATLAS STUDIO in ouarzazate, then drive through Skoura oasis of palm trees, Valley of roses, Dads valley and gorges, a short hike at Todra Gorges ( Canyons)… Camel Ride to see Sunset at the top of the highest ERG CHEBBI DUNES with an overnight experiencing the peaceful of Sahara desert in a berber luxury camping, watching stars and listening to drums music. Also you will have time to have some fun doing some sportive adventures and activities on the dunes with like experience sand-boarding, ATV Quads, Buggies, Horse Riding and more!

NOTE: Day Four will be a long day driving from Sahara desert back to Marrakech, which will take you around 10-11 Hours’ drive so it’s not recommended for kids… So to avoid giving your children bad experience it will be better to extend your trip for an extra two days minimum.

Day 1 – Marrakech Airport

Our expert Tour guide and Drivers will welcome you at the airport and take you to your Riad Hotel .Bed and Breakfast in your accommodation.

Day 2 – Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Skoura – El Kelaa M’gouna – Boumalen Dades

We will pick you up in the morning in Marrakech and depart for Ouarzazate via the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, rising to an elevation of 2260 meters, while enjoying the attractive views of the High Atlas Mountains and picturesque Berber villages. We will then go on to visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the exotic Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou and have lunch. 

Day 3 – Boumalen Dades – Todgha Gorge – Tinjdad – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, we will head toward Merzouga, stopping first at the spectacular Todgha Gorge where you can take a walk along the gorge floor between the canyon walls. We will then continue across the valley to Tinjdad, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will drive via Erfoud, where we will visit an amazing fossil factory and learn how they excavate, polish, and shape trilobites, orthoceras, ammonites, and other fossils into beautiful objects. We will continue on to Merzouga and the Dunes Luxury Camp at the foot of Sahara Desert dunes. Each tent is beautifully appointed and the entire camp is the ultimate in “glamping.” Here you will get ready for your next adventure; camel trekking! You will ride these Ships of the Desert into the heart of the Sahara, witnessing a spectacular sunset through the dunes. Back at the Dunes Luxury Camp you will enjoy Berber food, listen to the drums under a starry night sky, and sleep in your gorgeous tent in peace and tranquility.

Day 4 – Merzouga – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Set your alarm to wake up early this morning to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the dunes! It is a moment not to be missed. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious breakfast before we begin our journey back to Marrakech. We will stop for lunch in Ouarzazate and then continue on to Marrakech by crossing the high Atlas Mountain through the pass of Tizi n’Tichka.

Day 5 – Marrakech – Tour of the City with a Local Guide

Today, after breakfast you will have a full day to tour and discover Marrakech, the famous Red City. Your guide will take you to the most beautiful palaces and monuments of Marrakech, including the 19th century Bahia Palace, the 16th century Saadian Tombs, the Koutoubia Mosque, and the Majorelle Gardens. You will have lunch in the Medina and also have an opportunity to visit the famous Souks, where the merchants sell everything from leather and carpets to spices and jewelry. Jemaa el-Fnaa is perhaps the most famous town square on earth. From ancient times until today, tradesmen, snake charmers, acrobats, magicians, mystics, musicians, and monkey trainers have populated this UNESCO World Heritage site…..later on we transfer you to the airport at your flight time .

Morocco Travel Blog – Student Route

The following blog has been written by Bahia Fox after her recent trip to Morocco with Studentfy. It includes her personal experience, recommendations and tips about Morocco. To read her blogs about other cities and countries she has been to check out her website, Mrs Fox on the Run .

So here we are, three friends from Germany, Paula, Lisann and me (Bahia), that haven’t seen each other for a long time; one of us has been studying in Barcelona for the past six months and two others still in Germany.

We missed each other and it was time for a reunion. Since both the flights to and from Barcelona or Germany have unexpectedly been expensive for far too long, we got creative and decided to plan a trip to Morocco. This is a country that I, at least, have always been very interested in visiting for a long time but didn’t want to travel there alone.

Since all three of us are students, it should have been an affordable trip to Morocco, so that we could enjoy it and not being too concerned about the budget. Through Lisann, who is studying in Barcelona, we found a suitable offer for a student trip to Morocco: Studentfy’s trip to Morocco.

I forced Paula to meet me “Bahia-standard” three hours before departure at the gate. I had never been so badly prepared for a trip as I was for this one, because I was in the middle of my bachelor thesis, my head was overloaded, but I could hardly wait for this well-deserved five-day trip to Morocco.

On route and shortly before approaching Marrakech, we filled out the forms for the Ministry of Health on the plane, which we later on handed over to the customs officials together with our passport (tip: always pack a pen, because they are never handed out in the plane).

Next to the stamp in our passports, the customs officials wrote an individual arrival number by hand, which was cross referenced with every hotel booking, so that your whole trip can be traced and verified.

At the airport, we withdrew cash, bought a SIM card and were picked up by a local driver, who took us to our hotel in Marrakech for the first evening before our Moroccan adventure started the next day.

The ride from the airport to the city center took about 15 minutes. We quickly brought our luggage to our room and started strolling for some first impressions through the famous Jama El f’na Market, which was overflowing with handicrafts, clothes, beautiful materials – and of course, not to forget, all kinds of delicious foods and sweets.

Marrakech is a beautiful combination of old, traditional and new Morocco. Its labyrinths of bazaars (so called “souks”) are surrounded by the old town ruins.

We ate our way through stands of various snacks and enjoyed the delicious freshly squeezed juices. At sunset, we made our way back to our hotel in order to rest for the coming days.

The next morning at breakfast we finally met Lisann, who brought her dear friend Sara from Spain along. At about 08:30 that morning, we started our journey through the Atlas Mountains towards the Dades Canyon. We covered approximately 300 km that day, with a first stop in the heart of the Atlas Mountains.

At lunchtime, we arrived in the province and southern capital of Ouarzazate. Here we had lunch in a calm little restaurant enjoying a traditional dish: a vegetable tajine with couscous on the side. A tajine is a round, clay stew pot with a pointed lid with vegetables and all kinds of meat slowly to perfection in it.

With a stomach full of happiness, we walked strengthened to the UNSECO World Heritage Site Ksar Ait Ben-Haddou. The fortified city is at the foot of the High Atlas Mountain range, which often serves as an international film set, for example, for the film “Gladiator” or the series “Game of Thrones”. (Not that it deserves a judgment, I must confess that I might be one of the few people in the world who have never seen the “Game of Thrones”.)

Thanks to this trip, we got to know the Moroccan culture firsthand and hear related anecdotes, which are of great significance. In addition, we were introduced to the art of parchment paper burning.

A local resident showed us how he artistically burns whole landscapes on parchment paper using tea and other natural materials, thus making it permanent and visible forever, very interesting! The climb to the plateau was exhausting, but it was worth every step because of the incredible and breathtaking views that you get to see.

We spent the second night in the Dades valley. We made it just in time to watch the stunning sunset behind these magnificent mountains. The dinner at the Hotel Vieux Chateau was so incredibly delicious and prepared with so much love – definitely a culinary event not be missed, even if you only passing by for this incredible dinner!

For starter, there was delicious curry soup and for the main dish we were served again a suburb vegetable tajine with well marinated chicken, rice and couscous. We were in heaven!

At the end of the gorge, we joined our transport again and continue towards the Sahara Desert.

We stopped for lunch at a lovingly decorated small roadside restaurant along on the R702. While we waited for our meal – we again chose peppermint tea and a tajine.

For fun, Paula, Lisann and Sara got dressed in traditional Moroccan clothes by the locals and had their hands decorated with henna to highlight the occasion. Now only a few more kilometers separated us from the Sahara!

At around 09:00 in the morning of the third day, after an equally tasty breakfast, we headed back on the road towards the small village of Merzouga on the Sahara’s edge and close the border to Algeria, which was our final destination of the day. We covered about 280 km which doesn’t sound like much, but it took us about 6 hours.

On the way there, our first stop was the oasis town of Tinghir. This town is blessed with two palm tree oases, which are rich with dates, figs, olives and many other delicacies.

We stopped shortly before the Todra Gorge and continued on foot through this breathtaking gorge with its steep rockfaces, which are up to 300 meters high and attract numerous climbers. Respect! I would probably not dare to go up there.

Millions of years ago, the Oued Todra (directly translated meaning “river”) has cut an impressive path through the mountains towards the south of the country here. Today the river is only a mere stream.

On the third night, we were supposed to sleep in the middle of the Sahara Desert in a beautiful tent camp. Because I had already been to the Tunisian-Libyan part of the Sahara for 14 days in 2012 and I knew what we were roughly in for, I was quite excited to share this experience with my friends.

The starry sky, the sunset and sunrise were simply something out of this world that I will never forget. We finally arrived in the small village of Merzouga, which also served as backdrops in some movies.

Our desert tent camp, which I already mentioned previously, was located a few kilometers in the desert. In order to get there, camels were saddled up for us to ride through the desert. ”Woohooo! Moroccan camel ride!“.

However, Paula and I decided against riding on the camels and opted for walking barefoot through the warm Saharan desert sand. if you don’t start dreaming now, you have unfortunately never been allowed to do that before and cannot understand how beautiful it is to walk barefoot through warm sand!

While everyone else was stuck on their camels, we ran through the soft sand like little children and were able to take great photos. After the long car ride, the workout was also a welcome change and really did us good!

We arrived at the Sara Dune (you’ll find out in a moment why it carries that name). You can go sandboarding if you want to or you can just enjoy the evening sun, or both. Here we stayed until the sunset – what a wonderful experience it was!

Two of the Berbers, one of them whose name was Moe, who has lived and grew up in this part of the Sahara joined us and laughingly answered all our thousands of questions about their lifestyle, their everyday life and their aspirations.

We talked in a mixture of English, Spanish and French, but it worked. As it turned out, the two speak eight languages pretty much fluently! But there was one language in particular that Moe speaks fluently: the Language of Love. And not before long, Sara gets a – admittedly not quite seriously-meant (hopefully) – marriage proposal!

As a token of Moe’s love, and because the sand dune at whose edge we sat was too small to be already named, he spontaneously names it after her: “Sara Dune”.

After this auspicious occasion, the chatting and laughing, we sat there for a few more hours, reminiscing about everyday life, listening to stories from our two friends and enjoying the setting sun. Shortly before darkness, we left and made our way to the tent camp for the last kilometers.

This camp exceeded all our expectations by far! Really! We were welcomed with freshly made peppermint tea around a warm campfire, which was set up in the middle of the tent camp.

The night was getting quite chilly. As soon as the sun goes down in the desert, the temperatures get close to the freezing point. In our tents we first put on something warmer, warmed ourselves at the campfire and waited for dinner, which was served in a big tent.

After dinner, we all gathered around the campfire, huddled up in thick woolen blankets. The Berbers, who led us through the desert today, organized a drumming session for us and let us participate in traditional dances, which later included more other traditional instrument.

What started off more like a noise-jungle at the beginning quickly turned into “We will rock you” and “Don’t worry be happy”; So we sat together all evening until late night, dancing, learning the different instruments and enjoying the small desert festivity.

We set the alarm clock for 06:30 the next morning in order to enjoy the desert sunrise with its warming rays, with coffee in hand. We were dog-tired from the very short night (it was freeeeeezing; I really advise bringing scarfs and hoodies), but because of getting up early, we were rewarded with this magnificence sunrise, which left us speechless.

After we found our words again, we packed our bags and made our way back to Marrakech. From the desert all the way back to Marrakech, it was about 500 km long and thanks to small food breaks, the 11-hour drive was finally conquered.

The final day

Tired but happy and full of impressions, we arrived at our hotel late that evening. In order to make this already-perfect trip even better, we decided to go into town and spend the last hours celebrating and reminiscing together in the tiny restaurant Café Des Épices with freshly squeezed juices and uber-delicious food. We all agreed what a wonderful trip it was!

The next morning Lisann and Sara had to leave early for the airport; so we already said our goodbyes the evening before.

General recommendations

In my opinion, spring is the best time to visit Morocco because the days are warm and comforable but the nights get too cold especially in the desert.

Speaking of cold nights – here are a few things to know before going to Morocco:

The nights in the desert get cold

In spring, or at least in March, the nights are very cold. Especially in the desert. This means that you should definitely pack a beanie, a warm head cover or a hoodie to keep warm. Spoiler Alert: All our mothers were right when they told us during our childhood: “Put on a beanie! Most of the body heat is lost through the head.”

Respect the local traditions

Most people in Morocco are Muslims. This means that as guests in their country, we must respect their customs, beliefs, and their traditions. So, when you are packing for such this a trip, you should think about what to wear in Morocco in order to respect these customs especially when you are leaving the big cities, as the more rural setting is areas are traditionally more grounded. 

t least, your shoulders and knees should be covered. Regardless of whether this is the current fashion in other countries, cropped or backless tops are also rather uncool. It’s always best to pack a scarf or cloth that you can wear around your shoulders or waist and over your head when visiting holy sites. However, it is not necessary to wear a hijab in public.

The local money is easy to understand

In Morocco, you pay with Moroccan Dirham (MAD). The exchange rate when we visited was about 10 MAD for 1€ which makes the conversion really easy. ATMs can be found directly at the airport, in all bigger cities and some villages. Paying with a credit card is possible almost everywhere.

Tipping isn’t required

Generally, tips are not accepted (maybe if you are Moroccan and reading this can explain why?). For this reason, I quickly stopped it in order not to offend anyone. If you insist on tipping anyway, give it with your right hand, because the left hand is considered insulting in Arab countries. In cities, it’s more forgiving but not so much in some villages.

Telekom Morocco has great SIM cards

I bought a Moroccan SIM card with 5GB data at the airport for about 8€. Telekom Morocco has an excellent network coverage throughout the country.

Morocco’s History

Morocco only gained independence from France in 1956 and is now a kingdom. Everywhere in hotels, shops and markets you can find the portrait of King Mohammed VI, who has been in power since 1999.

The Kingdom of Morocco is located in the northwestern tip of Africa and only a few kilometers across the Mediterranean Sea from the Spanish mainland via the Strait of Gibraltar. With a population of 32.6 million inhabitants, which is less than half of Germany’s population, it is about 1.2 times larger than Germany with an area of 447,000 square kilometers. Morocco’s capital is the coastal city of Rabat.

Although Arabic is the most common language, French is widely spoken due to its colonial past. In touristic settings, you can also find that a lot of Spanish is being spoken, which may be due to the proximity to the Spanish mainland.

As in all Arabic countries, bargaining is gladly accepted and becomes a real sport if you get involved. The final price is usually 50% cheaper than the original price, unless fixed prices are given.

Entering the country from Europe is relatively unproblematic. With a passport valid for at least six months, you can stay in the country for up to 90 days without a visa (you can see if you need a visa to visit Morocco or not here).

People have asked me: “Is it safe to visit Morocco … as a European woman?” I have to admit that I probably wouldn’t necessarily do this trip alone, but that’s only me. We never felt uncomfortable at any time, not even as a group of four young women.

During the journey we were often surrounded by other students, local drivers and tour guides and really never alone. As in other Arab countries, of course you often dragged into the competition between passionate vendors at markets, but never touched or held onto.

The Moroccans are much more charming and humorous to me as one might expect. It also struck me positively that there is a lot less littering that I observed in other countries.

Day 2  Saturday 26/10  Cruise by ferry boat | Chefchaouen | Meknès

Day 4  Monday 28/10   Middle Atlas Mountains  |  Ziz Valley  |  Sahara Desert

Passing the  National Park of Ifrane you can find beautiful cedar forests littered with curious and friendly monkeys waiting to be fed. Admire all the magnificent views the Todra Gorge offers with spectacular geological formation carved by the River Todra, forming a deep gorge flanked by steep cliffs of unique beauty. Contemplate the famous Studios Atlas , the largest studios in the world and the filming location of several movies & series: Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Astérix and Obélix, Babel, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones and more. Visiting Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou   is going through a Portal to historical Morocco and a once in a lifetime experience seeing the Berber village and learning more about the history of the people. It has one of the largest and well-preserved fortresses in Morocco classified UNESCO World Heritage.

Savor the fantastic aromas of the spice souks and admire the famous sunsets of Jemaa el Fnaa square. Marrakech is both vibrant and enchanting. Surrounded by the Atlas Mountains and desert sands, there’s plenty to see and do.  Ouzoud Waterfalls are one of the largest natural attractions in the kingdom and form the largest waterfalls in North Africa with more than 100 meters in height. A huge place with positive vibes and friendly locals, making the experience much greater. Meet amazing monkeys that you can feed off your hand, a really great experience.

Day 8  Friday 01/11  Casablanca  |  Rabat  |   Asilah

Casablanca the largest city in Morocco. It is the country’s economic and cultural capital . In Casablanca, modern constructions mix with charming neighborhoods that reflect Arabic-Islamic heritage and the traces of the city’s colonial period. Walk through the medina, one of the most recent in Morocco. Wander through downtown to appreciate the modern buildings and visit the Hassan II Mosque , a truly remarkable work of art. Sense the positive energy of modernity and Authenticity in  Rabat , the capital of Morocco where you can find a fertile exchange between the Arab-Muslim past and Western modernism. You just can’t escape the joy taking over your body in the majestic Kasbah of the Udayas and its surrounding gardens.

Many cultures there have major influence over the Moroccan heritage. Tangiers has a rich history and a truly multi-cultural vibe. Visit the enjoyable Kasbah (fortress), the Medina (old quarter of Tangier) and the colorful markets , right in the borders between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean .

Day 1: Welcome to Marrakech

Pick up at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Possibility to make a first contact in the famous Jemaa el Fna square. Dinner and accommodation in a hotel near the square of Jemaa el Fenaa.

Day 2: Marrakech – High Atlas – Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

Pick up at the hotel or Riad where you are staying in Marrakech, departure to the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi N’Tichka pass at about 2. 260 meters of altitude, with stops to enjoy spectacular panoramic views, we will visit the oil cooperative of ARGAN, where we will discover the process of production and explain the many benefits it has for the human body, continue south and then we turn off on a track of 9 km that will take us to the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou where we will visit its famous Kasbah (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO). In this spectacular setting have been filmed so many famous movies as Gladiator, the Jewel of the Nile, Sahara, lunch in the village and continue the journey to Ouarzazate, considered the great gateway to the desert, where they leave the great expeditions and where highlights the great Kasbah of Taourirt, continue to the Valley of the Roses through the great palm of Skoura and Boumalne to reach the Dades Valley. Day 3: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Merzouga Dunes (Desert)

Breakfast and travel to Merzouga climb a path to observe the gorges from a strategic location in the mountains and then continue on the road dotted with beautiful Kasbah totally different from each other. After several stops, we arrive at one of the strengths of the south: The Todra Gorges 300m, The Todra riverbed has formed a gorge with vertical walls of enormous proportions and great beauty, is a paradise for climbers and a unique place. Lunch on the spot and continue to the desert until we reach the impressive Merzouga Dunes where we will have a tea of hospitality while we rest a little. We will leave our bags at the hostel and we will leave in a camel caravan, which in one hour, will take us to the Haimas camp. We will stop in the middle of the road to watch the sunset on the dunes and stretch our legs before continuing our way to the camp. before dinner we will have the opportunity to climb the dunes near the camp and have a tea enjoying the peace and silence there. we will spend the night in a haima, under the stars. (unforgettable night) Dinner and overnight at : Berber Haimas

Day 4: Merzouga – Draa Valley – Anti Atlas – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

We will wake up before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Great Dune. Return to the hostel on camels. Shower, breakfast and start the trip, passing through Rissani, one of the oldest cities in Morocco and capital of the Alaouit dynasty, and crossing the arid and at the same time interesting pre-desert landscapes until we reach the Draa Valley where we will make several stops to enjoy this beautiful valley that runs alongside the river of the same name. It is the longest river in Morocco and crosses the whole country to Mauritania. We will cross the Anti Atlas to get to Ouarzazate, lunch at the site. in the afternoon we will cross the High Atlas, and arrive in Marrakech. Dinner and overnight in hotel and riad

Day 5: Marrakech (guided visit) & Transfer to the Airport

A day dedicated to the visit of the red city, Marrakech, starting with the gardens of the Ménara with its pond, the Saadian tombs where the founders of the city are located, the Palace of the Bay, residence of the old vizier; the Koutobia, splendid minaret, to finish in the unspeakable Jemaa el fna Square.

At the agreed time transfer to the airport 2 hours before the flight departure.

Hi everyone! I’m Dinara, an International Hospitality and Tourism Management student at the University of Surrey, and today I’ll be talking about my course field trip to Morocco!

This optional week-long field trip is offered to International Hospitality and Tourism Management and International Tourism Management students, in collaboration with travel agency Explore . While it’s a week of fun with friends, it also serves a purpose: collecting data for our assignments.

Prior to the trip, we had fortnightly lectures to prepare us for our assignments. The first assignment is a group video podcast where we define a question related to Morocco, its tourism, and theories we’ve studied throughout our course or researched independently. ourselves. Our second assignment is an individual reflective essay about our experience during the field trip.

Day 1: Upon arriving in Marrakech (the capital city), we were introduced to our tour guides, Mohammed and Hassan. We then took a three-hour coach ride to Essaouira, another big city and a popular destination in the country due to its climate and ocean. On the way, I noticed quite a several interesting scenes: donkeys being used as a means of transport, vineyards, olive oil production sites, and red buildings. S

Regarding the buildings and their colours, Mohammed informed us that during the French Protectorate in Morocco, a law was established to preserve the architectural heritage, maintaining the original look of the houses, including their colours and details. Interestingly, the colours of cities differ: Marrakesh tends to be more red due to the prevalent stone, whereas Essaouira, for example, is orange. The hotel we checked into reflected this law with its patterns, wood carvings on wardrobes, ceilings, and bed frames.

On the way to Essaouira, we also stopped at an argan oil production site. The facility was a moderately sized building where about 13 women, all widowed, produced oil by hand. There was also a shop selling soaps, oils, shampoos, and more. This initiative contributes to the economic sustainability of the area.

Dinner was a delicious three-course meal at the hotel restaurant.

Day 2: We had breakfast at the hotel and then met with Mohamed for about an hour. He explained the day’s plan and gave us an overview of the history and geography of Essaouira and Morocco in general. We took a lovely walk along the ocean’s coastline to the medina (old town), saw where an episode of Game of Thrones was filmed, and had lunch at a local restaurant. Since Essaouira is by the ocean, we had a lot of fish dishes during our stay, including our lunch that day.

After lunch, we visited a marketing with various types of fish, some of which I’d never seen before. We then toured a hotel where we had the opportunity to ask questions for our assignments. While some people returned to the hotel afterward, my friends and I went back to the medina and enjoyed some ice cream on a rooftop with a view of the entire area. Dinner was also in town.

Day 3: We drove for about an hour and a half to another hotel. This hotel was a tranquil retreat; it doesn’t do any advertising and relies solely on word of mouth, which works perfectly for them. Everything is made from natural materials, mainly stone and wood. It has a view of the ocean is surrounded by tonnes of greenery.

We had another opportunity to ask questions, including those related to our assignments. After the visit, we returned to town. Some people took optional surfing lessons which they’d signed up to advance, while others, like me, went back to the medina to wander around the market and buy souvenirs.

Day 4: We drove to Ait Ben Haddou, a famous yet more niche location known for its stunning views and unique village architecture. The downside was climbing all the stairs, but the views and the small souvenir shops along the way made it worthwhile.

Day 5: One of the trip highlights was the desert!

We ‘sheshed up’ (referring to the shesh, a headscarf word by Bedouins), before driving to the desert. When we arrived, we had lunch, took some time to complete our field diaries for our assignment, and got to ride the camels, which was quite scary at first but I soon got the hang of it.

It was then time for some thé à la menthe (mint tea) and dinner: couscous with beef, bone broth, and roasted vegetables. For dessert, we had oranges with cinnamon, a common Moroccan treat we encountered several times.

After dinner, Mohammed gave us an introduction to the Sahara and the life of the Sahrawi people (those living in the desert). Following that, we enjoyed a performance with African drums and Sahrawi songs and danced in a circle to their music. Some people then went to sleep (in tens – which had actual beds!), while others, including me, chose to sleep under the stars. It was fun until my friend and I woke up at 3am because of the cold.

Day 6: We had breakfast and took the camels back. We then drove to High Atlas Mountains, where we walked for about 30 minutes to the riad (guest house). There, we enjoyed the usual mint tea followed by dinner. After dinner, some of us went to the terrace with a view of the mountains and stars. It was incredible for the first seven minutes until it became unbearably cold. By now, you can probably tell that it’s not always +30°C in Morocco year-round.

Day 7: Another day, another location. This time we drove to Marrakech. It felt quite interesting to be there after spending time in deserts and mountains with little to no people, let alone tourists.

After lunch, we met another tour guide who took us to Bahai Palace, a riad museum. We then walked through the medina and along the souks until we reached our minibuses that took us to the hotel.

Later, we returned to the place where we had lunch and listened to a presentation form Explora, with opportunities to ask questions. For dinner, we tried another traditional Moroccan dish called pastilla – a layered crunchy pastry with meat, cinnamon, and powdered sugar on top. I didn’t think I’d like this combination, but I did! Afterward, we had free time to wander around the medina.
