SOUTH ISRAEL OFFROAD TOURS
EXPLORE THE ISRAELI WILDERNESS
The south of Israel, known as the NEGEV region , holds about 60% of Israel's territory, and only about 15% of the total population.
This area is a unique desert environment, rich with diverse zoological and botanical life, and home of some rare geological phenomena, such as the beautiful erosion craters , that can be found only in this part of the world.
The weather in this region is dry and cool most of the year - even in the summer time. Humidity is very low, as the terrain is between 600 to1000 meters above sea level.
This region is known for its unique biblical vast and beautiful landscapes, formed by tectonic plate shifting, as well as seasonal rain water flash-floods, carving the mountains and valleys for millions of years.
NOMIS4x4 invites you to explore the wonders of this "Crater land" - We are here for any help with logistical support for your independent hike, or planning and executing specialized Jeep Tours for any size of group.
Please contact us today for details.
We are happy to provide free consulting and information.

Jeep tour in Mitzpe Ramon – A great desert experience
A jeep tour is being together and exploring an uncharted land. To move along the paths, feel the rocks, and enjoy the connection to nature and the terrain.
A jeep tour in Mitzpe Ramon is to see the landscape pass by, and suddenly two ibex run on the side of the road; and if you are lucky, you will also see a herd of deer jumping by your side as the desert landscape completes the scenery.
A jeep tour in Ramon Crater means plowing the dirt roads in the wadis, climbing to uplifting views, absorbing the sights, being happy and singing, and feeling life at its best.
A jeep tour in the desert means stopping by a vast acacia tree, having a cup of sweet and steaming tea, lying on the mat, and observing. Maybe a rockfish or a gray tail bird will visit you. Perhaps they have a message for you to take back home.
A bit of Jeep history
The Jeep brand was born in 1941. The American army then presented a tender among 135 manufacturers of a light military vehicle that could transport troops and equipment in challenging terrain conditions. They tested three prototypes for an off-road vehicle and chose a model manufactured by the Bantam company.
The need was so great that the Willys and Ford companies joined the production process. From 1941 until the end of World War II, American factories produced more than 600,000 jeeps.
The Jeep became the primary off-road vehicle of many armies worldwide until the Hummer replaced it. In the IDF, it was replaced by the M-240 storm vehicle, which belongs to the Daimler-Chrysler company and is manufactured in Israel at Nazareth Illit Automotive Industries.
The name Jeep became a brand name for all SUVs .
Folklore – Hey ha’Jeep
The years pass, and slowly the old songs are forgotten. We are here to remind you of Haim Hefer and Shmuel Pershko’s poem: Hey ha’Jeep.
The song tells about the travel experience of a guy and a girl. They enjoy traveling together and chatting. She takes the wheel. He gets excited about the speed, and they have a flat tire.
The chorus goes like this:
Hey, The Jeep, hey the Jeep What a night all around! Please listen, Itzik! What’s up, Rina? take a little left, Take a right! Everyone will say, The main thing in a jeep is speed! Fast we pass as wind – Brax! Stop! Stop!
And here is the performance of the Cheesetron:
Ideas for jeep trips in the desert
Due to the excellent offense of the jeeps, there is a wide variety of places to travel. Mitzpe Ramon is in the heart of the high desert, and from there, you can go on jeep tours in different areas of different experiences. Here are the options:
Jeep trips to Ramon Crater
Ramon Crater is mostly a nature reserve, and it is impossible to travel outside the marked paths by car. Fortunately, there is a particular area for off-road lovers at the crater’s heart.
In this area, you can experience the stunning views of the Ramon Crater from the maddening peak of Gvanim Mountain to an adventurous off-road drive through the crater’s wadis. You will get an explanation about the crater’s formation; you will paint your face with colored minerals; you will get inspired by the power of the desert and stories about what is happening in the area that is never boring.
Jeep tours combined with walking in Makhtes Ramon
Some like to travel; some like to walk. But some like both. So we want to tell you that it is possible to make a combined jeep trip in Makhtes Ramon.
An excellent example is the following option: a jeep trip in the Ramon crater, overnight at the Be’erot parking lot at the foot of the impressive Mount Ardon, and a half-day hiking trip to the Nakrot Horseshoe.
Combinations like this are easy to plan. Make sure to ask your tour guide about them.
Culinary jeep tours to the vineyards and orchards of the Negev Mountains
The Negev district has developed a lot in the last decade in the field of agriculture and culinary. Settlers established individual pioneer farms in the open areas near Mitzpe Ramon and Sde Boker. Those settlers planted olive and grape vineyards, plum orchards, and even sabers you can find in the high desert.
Along with agriculture, you can plan a jeep tour that explores olive oil and wine manufacturers at visitor centers, local restaurants, and the people who make miracles in the desert.
Jeep tours to the blossoms in the Lotz pits and Nitsana
The Lotz pits area is known for its carpets of desert blossoms in February and March. Then the desert ground brings up beautiful flowers that vibrate the heart.
We recommend combining walking and riding trips in Lotz pits. You can cross to the southern side of the road to Mount Ramon and Nahal Eliav.
Another wonderful area for jeep tours is the Nitsana area, which has a vast agricultural and artistic scene.
Jeep tours to Sde Boker area
Midreshet Ben Gurion, next to Kibbutz Sde Boker, is located above the Zin valley. The settlement area, the expansive vineyards, and the ancient city of Avdat are lovely destinations for jeep tours.
One of the recommended places for a jeep trip in this area is the cool fountain that falls into the pool from a great height – Ein Akev. After parking the Jeep in a designated parking lot, getting to the pool is a short walk.
In a way, you can continue walking for several hours or go by Jeep and reach down the serpentines of the Ben Gurion Midrasha, where there is always water in the winter.
Don’t miss the Nabatean city of Avdat and the fascinating guidance of the Nature and Parks Authority guides, with stories and folklore about the Nabatean people who created fascinating agriculture in the desert 200 years ago.
The price of a jeep tour can vary. There are differences in the types of vehicles, the nature of the training, the challenge of the route, and other elements, which affect the price, so the prices in front of you are a general direction reading so that you understand more or less how much it will cost you.
- Jeep trip of two to two and a half hours – 900 to 1500 NIS.
- Jeep trip of about four hours – 1200 to 1600 NIS.
- Full-day jeep trip – 1600 to 2500 NIS.
- A combined jeep and walking trip for up to half a day – between 800 and 1500 NIS.
- A combined jeep and walking trip for a whole day – between 1200 and 2200 NIS.
What should you take with you on a desert jeep tour?
Here’s a short list of equipment that will make the desert jeep tour perfect:
- Snacks/pastries/fruits and cutlery
- Cards / Flying Saucer / Ball game
- Garbage bag
- Warm clothes if the trip ends in the evening
How to choose the jeep tour guide
- The simplest and most effective way is to talk to the jeep tour guide on the phone. You can learn many things through sound.
- Come prepared – tell us what interests you from the list we presented here. Find out if the jeep tour guide is knowledgeable in this area, and ask him to tell you about the various options so that it fits your expectations.
- Check for reviews on the jeep tour guide. The more recommendations there are, the more likely it is to make a safe choice. You can find reviews on this website, the guides’ websites, Google Maps , and Trip Advisor.
- Ask about the type of Jeep and check that it suits you. There are more luxurious jeeps and those that are more basic. If air conditioning, for example, is essential to you, find out in advance.
- Adapt the trip to the nature of the group in terms of traveling time, level of difficulty, walking time if there is walking, number of breaks, etc.
- If you need a long break during the route, emphasize this to the guide and plan the schedule together.
- If there is a chance that some group members would prefer a short trip, we recommend splitting it into two jeeps. The same goes for the possibility that some group members would like to go on a hike while others would prefer to drive.

Day 1 - Setting off from Eilat in Jeeps, we journey off road into the scenic valley of Wadi Shlomo where we meet our camels. We enjoy a two hour camel ride into the desert taking in the fabulous nature and scenery. Following the camel ride it's back to our jeeps as we wind our way over the off-road trails overlooking the Red Sea. We work our way up towards the mountains peaks along an ancient pilgrimage route to Mecca, on the way we visit the Ein Netafim spring which is popular with local wildlife, particularly desert mountain goats. We stop for a short break at Mount Yoash to enjoy the fabulous views that span the bay and take in the coastlines of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The panoramic scenery stretches across Egypt's Sinai desert and the mountains of Jordan which rise over the expanses of the Arava Valley. From here we head to the 'Red Canyon' a popular highlight for visitors to Eilat and an interesting walk takes us down into the canyon, with a little help from fixtures in the canyon walls and back over the top of the canyon on the walk back. From here we head on to the sand dunes of the Kasui Valley and the small desert village of 'Shaharut' where we spend the night in traditional desert camping accommodation. After a hearty cooked meal we settle for the night in the sleeping bags and mattresses provided. Day 2 - After taking in the fabulous views from the cliffs of Shaharut we make our way to the Eteq canyon, the most picturesque canyon in the area. Here we begin our descent from the Negev Plateau with the breathtaking views of the Arava Valley ahead of us. At the Eteq canyon we stop for a walk into the canyon where we see rock pools (depending on season), this too is a popular area for local wildlife and the off-road route through this area is particularly dramatic and it leads us down into the expanses of the Arava where we explore the Statues valley before making our way back to Eilat where we complete our tour.
2 Days Judean Desert Tour from Jerusalem and the Dead Sea (Dead Sea tours and Masada) Day 1: Driving first to the Dead Sea we begin our off road desert experience on the striking cliffs overlooking the Dead Sea. We shift to 4x4 and drive to the canyon of Wadi Meshash. We leave our jeep and hike down the Meshash gorge, descending through the water holes with the help of some fixtures and fittings that aid our way. Continuing on to Wadi Muraba'at and into the Muraba'at caves. It was here that the first Bar-Kochva letters from the Roman period were found. A steep path brings us back to the 4x4 track and we begin our drive along the wild plateau landscapes of the Judean Desert, stopping occasionally at sites overlooking the Dead Sea and the oasis of Ein Gedi. After crossing the challenging canyons of Nachal Mishmar and Nachal Arugot, we set up our camp under the glittering desert skies. Day 2: Early in the morning we drive to Brekhat Zefira, a natural waterhole in the Judean Desert and from here a short 4x4 drive takes us to the Masada road. On the Roman Ramp we enter the famous ruins (King Herod's Desert Fortress) and take our time in exploring the site, hearing about its fascinating and tragic history and taking in the famous views. Back to the 4x4 for an off-road drive to the Ma'ale Yair road and back down to the Dead Sea. Following a brief 'float' in the salty waters we return to our jeep for a ride through the surreal landscape and a final leisurely hike into the Flour Cave completes our tour. Mitzpe Ramon: the ULTIMATE guide to what to see and do in this amazing Negev desert gem!
- 442 Facebook
- 16 Pinterest
We knew that we’d discovered a gem of a stopover in the middle of the desert when we told our three small kids that we were returning home the next morning; their response, in a rare pact of togetherness, was a loud and resounding “Nooooo! We want to stay!” …
Contrary to our own fantastic experience, Mitzpe Ramon is today still considered by many Israelis as a bit of a ghost town, as something of a pit-stop on the way to Eilat . Time for a toilet break and a quick look out across the majestic Makhtesh Ramon , or the Ramon Crater as it’s more commonly (and incorrectly !) known.
But seriously, those days are over.
Thanks to an influx of inspirational and creative locals from across Israel over the last 2-3 years especially, Mitzpe Ramon is fast on its way to becoming the must-see destination if you’re looking for some desert fun and adventure. The stunning natural attractions in the area, combined with some excellent dining and accommodation options, make Mitzpe Ramon a superb spot to add to your Israel bucket list!
Some Mitzpe Ramon history
The town of Mitzpe Ramon was first built as a camp for the workers who were building the road to Eilat, back in 1951. The town then became one of Israel’s southernmost development towns, where many new immigrants were sent to live.
With the Russian immigration wave of the early 1990s, Mitzpe Ramon started to take a cultural turn for the better, and with many people considering the route to Eilat on Road 40 (the road which passes through Mitzpe Ramon) a more scenic alternative to Road 90, Mitzpe Ramon got its fair share of passing tourist traffic.
But many Israelis still associated the town with those early “development” days, and it was largely considered a backwater town hardly worth exploring beyond the legendary Ramon Crater.
However, with an influx of inspirational people to the town over the last few years, who truly care about nurturing it into the true desert gem it is, combined with a new mayor in 2013 who has banished the alleged corrupt nepotism of the town to the archives, Mitzpe Ramon is set to become a major player in the Israel tourism market.
That is, of course, our own opinion, but from the magical 3 days we spent there, Mitzpe Ramon is already well and truly on the map!
Things to see and do in Mitzpe Ramon
There are some really amazing things to see and do in Mitzpe Ramon and the surrounding area, whether you’re an independent traveler, a family, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or even a group of extreme sports enthusiasts looking for some desert adventure!
First up, it goes without saying that the Ramon Crater , or Makhtesh Ramon , is a must see. It’s a true, natural wonder, and has always been one of the Top 10 things to see in Israel .
The ultimate way to experience the Ramon Crater is not via the Visitor’s Center at the top of the Crater, perched at the edge of the town. OK, the center is a great place to grab a photo or two of the stunning sci-fi like scenery, but if you really want to have a mind-blowing experience, take a jeep tour of the crater itself with an experienced local guide.
We went with local tour operator Deep Desert Israel , run by Itai, who was an absolute star who won us over with his charm and knowledge (you can find many of their tours under our Desert tours section).
On day one, Itai picked us up and took us for a drive in his Land Rover to the Zin Valley , which is about 30 minutes from Mitzpe Ramon (the Crater we did the following day, read on below). What can you expect from a jeep tour of the Zin Valley? Well, if we say amazing vistas, wild camels (herded by Bedouin shepherds), secret 10 meter deep springs to jump into and cool down in, and real-life desert oases (yes, plural!), all wrapped up in superb explanations by a super-knowledgeable guide, we’re pretty sure you’ll be heading for one of Itai’s tours too pretty soon!
In the afternoon, Itai also took us to the Spice Route Quarter , the old industrial zone of Mitzpe Ramon which has fast become a hive of cute little boutique stores, guest houses, bakeries, restaurants, and even a jazz club! But be careful not to miss it: as you drive into Mitzpe Ramon watch out for the signposts, it’s the first major turning right. If you’ve got to the big main roundabout in the town, head back as you’ve gone past it.
We were impressed with the mini cosmetics factory at Faran , which creates a range of 100% natural cosmetics inspired by nature and the desert surroundings, as well as a carpentry workshop called Atar Bniya , which had some very tasty furniture in it that the missus wanted to take home with her! There is also a lively bar there, as well as the Mitzpe Ramon Jazz Club, both of which we didn’t get the chance to check out.
One of the best places we discovered in the Spice Route Quarter is HadaSaar , home to some amazing local produce and where we ended up eating breakfast the following morning – read our review of HadaSaar below, it’s very highly recommended!
In the late afternoon we headed to the Alpaca Farm , a great stopover for the kids, where they can get nice and close with the alpacas and lamas. The farm is also a great place to sleep over, with a number of nice-looking apartments for rent. But seriously, it’s the alpacas and their wool which is the main attraction here. Well worth spending an hour or two here, and don’t miss out on feeding the alpacas, that can be quite a hairy experience if there are two or more in your vicinity!
The next morning we decided (or were “encouraged” to by Itai) to try abseiling . And not just any abseiling (rappelling), but abseiling down the cliffs of the Ramon Crater! Of course, yours truly had to go down first, just to show the kids there was nothing to it, and I don’t recall being that scared for quite some time! There’s just something nuts about hanging your body over the edge of a sheer drop, something which your body just won’t let you accept without a bit of a fight, and a shaky leg or two! All in all though, a fantastic experience, and the kids loved it so much they each went down twice!
The finale for our time in Mitzpe Ramon was a jeep tour of Makhtesh Ramon itself, led by Itai of Deep Desert Israel once again. Itai took us down into the crater, going off-road to show us some spectacular scenery. And his explanations of how the crater was formed (the crater is actually an erosion crater some 40 km long, 2–10 km wide and 500 meters deep) won the kids over completely, especially when they got to rebuild their own version of it with plenty of sand and a bottle of water…
We squeezed in a lot of things over our three days, but there are plenty more things to see in Mitzpe Ramon.
Of course, there’s the impressive lookouts over the crater, which can be seen from the Visitor’s Center. Personally, I’d check out the Camel Lookout , a much quieter (less tourists) viewpoint just a few minutes walk (two minutes drive) from the Visitor’s Center. There’s also the Albert Promenade that kind of links the two points.
For those of you who love hiking , there are some great routes available, including the impressive Har Ardon trail, which takes you through some mightily impressive rock formations over 11 long kilometers, and the more recently established Negev Highlands Trail . Check with your guide or accommodation for more details and guidance.
Where to eat out in Mitzpe Ramon
To our surprise, there are quite a number of decent eateries in Mitzpe Ramon. And to help you out we have TWO excellent options for you to enjoy!
First up, we stopped by at HadaSaar in the Spice Route Quarter for some breakfast ( UPDATE: HadaSaar is now a guest house only, with no restaurant) . This magical little vegetarian spot was a hit, thanks to some yummy food (don’t miss the awesome pizza with pesto and fried eggs – it was so new a concept it hadn’t even made it to the menu!), some great, freshly made shakes that the kids enjoyed a lot, and a great, laid-back vibe. This is one spot you really should try and check out in Mitzpe Ramon, even if you’ve only got time for a quick stopover.
Meital the manageress did a great job explaining the idea behind HadaSaar, which has fast evolved into the must-see hub for local produce. From beers to wines, from jewelry to local vegetables, HadaSaar is a great place for a taste of the local goods available. And don’t be surprised to see something new when you make it to Mitzpe Ramon, as HadaSaar promises to continually expand and develop.
Our second option for you is Hummus Gingee , a great little spot for some very fresh, and very tasty, hummus and falafel. We love our falafel , especially when it’s hot and delicious, and Gingee (run by Dor, Gingee’s son) didn’t disappoint. The hummus was also very tasty, and as Dor makes a fresh batch every couple of hours, you can be assured that you’re getting some mightily fresh hummus. Not fine dining by any means, but after a long and hot jeep tour, it hit the spot perfectly. When your kids are also mopping up the hummus with their pita bread (stuffed with chips in legendary English chip butty style – I blame their mother), you know the place is a winner. You can find Hummus Gingee just off the main roundabout in town (take a right at the roundabout (if coming from the north) and then take the first car park on your right – you’ll see Hummus Gingee alongside a few other shops and kiosks).
If you really have to look at other options, you could always go with Pizza Selfie (oh yeah, get in on a fad while you can!), the very safe Cafe Neto , part of a well-known chain of coffee shops in Israel and a safe bet if you’re struggling to get any inspiration to haul you out of your monotony box, or HaHavit , a decent looking option for beers and burgers. And these three options are all right next door to each other (take a right at the main roundabout in town, then take a left at the next small roundabout), so don’t say we aren’t looking out for ya!
Where to stay in Mitzpe Ramon
There are an ever-growing number of accommodation options in Mitzpe Ramon, which has undoubtedly been boosted by the luxury Beresheet Hotel , which opened in 2011.
We weren’t looking for luxury ourselves, so went for the off-the-beaten-track Silent Arrow ( Hetz BeSheket in Hebrew, a clever play on words, if you know your Hebrew). I’ll be honest, I had reservations about staying there, largely because of the lack of electricity (meaning no AC), not ideal during a hot Israeli summer.
But after convincing ourselves that we’d be out and about during the day and only returning ‘home’ in the evening, we were soon won over by the charm and pace of Silent Arrow, and by the cool breeze that swept through after 5 pm. Cool enough to warrant a sweatshirt or two, which surprised us all! If you’re looking for something a little bit special and unique, you won’t go far wrong with Silent Arrow. It’s not luxury, and there is no breakfast, but there’s a certain charm that just conquers your heart…
Some other accommodation options include the more secluded (and romantic) Succah in the Desert , and the cute B&Bs at the Alpaca Farm . If you’re after decent hostel digs, head to the Green Backpackers, one of the best and budget hostels in the whole of Israel !
How to get to Mitzpe Ramon
Mitzpe Ramon is pretty easy to get to, as it’s on the main route to Eilat (Road 40). It’s some 185 km from Tel Aviv, and 161 km from Jerusalem, with plenty of buses stopping in Mitzpe on their way to Eilat (buses typically leave BeerSheva every 20-40 minutes; note that express buses from Tel Aviv probably won’t stop in Mitzpe Ramon so make sure you verify upon boarding).
