I recently embarked on an extraordinary six-day motorcycle journey with Royal Ride Laos, covering approximately 1,300 kilometers. I must say, it was an absolutely fantastic experience.
One of the standout factors was our lead guide, Thierry. Not only is he personable and fun to be around, but his knowledge of the local culture and expertise in navigating Laos made the trip truly memorable. We traversed some incredible roads, passing through captivating destinations such as Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw, and Pak Lay. Additionally, we had the opportunity for thrilling off-road riding.
Among the highlights were our visits to various temples, where we were able to immerse ourselves in the rich spiritual heritage of Laos. The breathtaking vistas we encountered along the way added an extra layer of awe-inspiring beauty to the journey.
The accommodations provided by Royal Ride Laos were comfortable and clean, ensuring a rejuvenating rest after each day's adventure. Moreover, the food served was absolutely delicious, allowing us to savor the local flavors and culinary delights of Laos.
Lastly, the Royal Enfield Scram 411 bikes provided by Royal Ride Laos were the perfect choice for riding in Laos. Their reliability and performance added to the overall enjoyment of the journey.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on a journey in Laos with Royal Ride Laos. Their exceptional service, combined with the remarkable landscapes and cultural experiences, make for an unforgettable adventure.

Tour highlights.
When you are not riding the bikes on the sweeping and joyful tracks and roads, you’ll stay in everything from luxury hotels to campsites alongside lakes. You’ll take a boat trip through a cave nearly 7 kilometres long (with your bike!), meet with members of remote hill tribes and swim in a blue lagoon before sinking a cool beer while watching the sunset.
Oh, and you’ll also have a BBQ on an old CIA airbase runway in a location known as ‘The Most Secret Place on Earth’! This is a motorcycle adventure tour worthy of every bikers bucket list.
Tour Itinerary Click to expand
Day 1: arrive in champassak - welcome to laos click to expand.
You’ll be picked up from the airport and driven alongside the mighty Mekong river through truly stunning landscapes down to Champasak.
You’ll stay at a beautiful riverside resort which marks the start point for your epic adventure and there will be a chance to cool off in one of the pools before a sunset briefing of the adventure ahead.
We’ll then enjoy a welcome dinner and get to know each other over a drink or two.The bikes will be ready and waiting, so we’ll also have the chance to make some adjustments before hitting the road tomorrow.
- Accommodation: 5* riverside resort with a pool.
- Included Meals: Dinner.
Day 2: Champassak - Attapeu 145km Click to expand
It’s the first day of riding on this Ho Chi Minh Trail motorcycle tour and after breakfast you’ll hop on the bikes and ride alongside the Mekong to reach your first Laos ferry crossing. From there it’s dirt roads and trails up towards the Xe Pian National Park.
We then head onto tiny and twisting local tracks and ox-cart trails through the dense forests to take you to your first overnight stop on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The riding is truly wonderful, but you’ll have to concentrate on the many creek crossings if you don’t want to be the first one to take a dip – but don’t worry, it’s so warm you’ll hardly notice!
- Accommodation: Guesthouse.
- Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3: Attapeu - Paksong 230km Click to expand
Start the day with a quick blast along the blacktop to visit an enormous abandoned Russian missile. It’s a stark reminder of the turbulent history of the Ho Chi Minh trail, and great for selfies!
After this it’s onto a wonderful mix of dirt trails that climb up into the hills and there’s more military hardware littering the side of the trails, from tanks to bomb shells. The trails continue to climb to give astounding views over the forests that cover the rolling hills below, the scars of the battles now hidden beneath the canopies of the trees.
Take a break for a delicious lunch with the local people in Chaleunxai before heading on upwards to over 1300m and into the villages of remote hill tribes that are unique to southern Laos.
The day continues as you cross a new bridge over a wide river below and pick up the main road towards the wide Bolaven Plateau and on to the evening’s accommodation at a beautifully picturesque and luxurious garden resort. After 230km a cool beer is a welcome sight!
- Accommodation: Resort with a pool.
Day 4: Paksong - Xepon 255km Click to expand
It’s another long day today, but you’ll start with some tasty coffee grown in the plantations surrounding the resort.
Saddle up and travel along a sweeping dirt road to catch up with the indigenous people of the A-Lak tribe whose lives are lived almost unchanged for centuries. It’s an incredible experience.
This area was heavily shelled in the Vietnam conflict, but years after the bombs stopped falling the locals have turned the craters into fishing lakes and pools for the water buffalo or just for the children to play in.
The first river crossing is another echo of the war, as the remains of the bridge wrecked by American bombings still stand on the banks of the now peaceful water. You’ll splash your way past and on to some fantastic trails, down steep hills, up inclines, through forest creeks and across every surface from chunky rocks to deep sand.
You’ll travel through cool woodland glades and tiny villages and finish the day’s ride crossing the final river of the day on impossibly small wooden boats to reach the town of Xepon.
- Accommodation: Town hotel.
Day 5: Xepon - Ta-Oy - Xepon 230km Click to expand
Leave your bags in the room and hand your laundry to the concierge as today you are on a circular route that will bring you back to Xepon in the evening.
After a hearty breakfast you’ll head a short way up the road to visit the Laos-Vietnam War Museum, a fascinating display of the weapons of the conflict accompanied by explanations of just how Laos fitted into this terrible war. It’s a sobering experience that ties in the history of the trail that you are following.
After that you’ll be ready for a bit more riding, so it’s time to jump on the dirt bikes and head due south towards the longest bamboo bridge in the country. But you’re not there to just look – you’re riding over that bad-boy so buckle up and focus on where you’re going – it only moves up and down and side to side!
There’s still a lot of unexploded bombs on the far side of the river, so you’ll be keeping firmly to the safe route as you head away and follow a fantastic mix of trails and dirt roads back to Xepon.
Day 6: Xepon - Nakai 240km Click to expand
Leaving Xepon, you’ll be straight onto a rough road on the way to Villabouly which is a one of the biggest sites for the gold mining industry in Laos.
It’s then onto rocky trails that will lead you through the vast Hin Nam No National park.
After this you enter what Ride Expeditions Head Honcho Toby has dubbed ‘Swiss Cheese Valley’ and you’ll see why straight away.
Having taken another tasty lunch with the local people it’s a river crossing on those rickety wooden boats again so try not to wobble about too much – you don’t want to be fishing for dirt bikes!
The last part of the day is on an unexpectedly smooth and flowing blacktop ribbon that will lead you to your campsite for the night on the banks of the Nam Thern Lake. While you sip on a cold one, the locals will fire up the barbie and you can dine like kings as the sun goes down. Does it get better than this??
- Accommodation: Private campsite – individual tents.
Day 7: Nakai - Konglor 80km Click to expand
As you’ve been racking up the miles, today is low on the distance and high on the scenery. You’ll leave the tents after a leisurely breakfast and head up a winding track that enters the deep valley that houses the entrance to the massive Konglor Cave.
With your bike loaded on the front of your own boat, you’ll float through the stunning seven kilometre long river cave all the way through to where the support truck will be waiting with cold drinks.
Suitably refreshed you might just want to go for a swim in the crystal-clear lagoon and just chill out. If you can drag yourself away, it’s back on the bikes for a short schlep on to your overnight stop at another great riverside resort where dinner and a crackling fire pit is waiting.
- Accommodation: Riverside resort.
Day 8: Konglor - Xaysomboun 320km Click to expand
The morning ride is an easy one on a tarmac road through the beautiful landscape of the Nam Kading mountain range covered by dense tropical forest. After lunch in Thasi village you’ll hit the dirt and head towards tonights destination, stopping to visit villages of ‘lowland Lao’, ‘Hmong’ and ‘Khmu’ along the way.
You arrive in Xaysomboun – perched high up in the cool & misty mountains – this village is still untouched by tourism and you should arrive here in time to enjoy an incredible sunset across the hills.
Day 9: Xaysomboun - Long Chen 90km Click to expand
Today you continue the ride on Revolution Road to Lima site 20A (Long Chen). Long Chen is home to a military base used by the CIA during the secret war in Laos and has only recently opened up to tourists. A 1200m runway sits surrounded by karst limestone hills in a truly spectacular setting. Long Chen is known as ‘The Most Secret Place on Earth’ – punch this into Youtube and have a watch – it’ll both amaze and anger you.
After you arrive at Long Chen you’ll visit the runway and get some incredible photos. You can also visit the house of General Vangphao, the leader of the Hmong forces during the secret war. You’ll then ride up to Phou Mok Mountain to a nice viewpoint overlooking Long Chien Village and the runway.
Spend the evening enjoying a BBQ on the runway – it’s a very strange feeling being surrounded by such beauty, yet thinking about what happened in this exact location in recent history.
- Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 10: Long Chen - Phonsavan 90km Click to expand
Depart Long Chen with one final ride along the runway after which you ride through isolated mountain areas on your way through to Phonsavan and the Plain of Jars in Xiengkhouang Province. This area was heavily mined and bombed and remnants of the Indochina war can still be seen in the Hmong villages on the way.
You’ll explore ‘Site 2’ of the Plain of Jars and continue to Phonsavanh. You’ll stop at the MAG (Mine Advisory Group) information centre in the town to learn more about the UXO clearance projects in this area… after you’re journey up the Ho Chi Minh Trail and after last night’s experience at Long Chen, no one will judge you if this place brings tears to your eyes. It really is a sobering experience and an absolute must visit.
After visiting MAG, it’s a short ride up the hill to your accommodation – beautiful little cottages nested among a pine tree forest and a restaurant with roaring log fires – what a wonderful way to end the day.
- Accommodation: Beautiful hilltop cottages – each equipped with open wood fires and surrounded by pine tree forest.
- N.B. Phonsavanh is a chilly place – please remember to pack warm layers for this afternoon / tomorrow mornings ride.
Day 11: Phonsavan - Luang Prabang 195km Click to expand
It’s the final day of this Ho Chi Minh Trail motorcycle tour so after stocking up with another great breakfast you’ll jump on the bikes, drop the clutch and set out for the trails once more. The trails run alongside the Nam Kham river for mile after mile of epic riding as you head for the destination of Luang Prabang.
As a place to finish the tour, this vibrant and exciting town could not be better. Sitting on the banks on the mighty Mekong and teeming with shops and markets it’s the perfect end point for the tour.
You’ll ride into the hotel, ditch the riding kit and grab a shower before heading out for a farewell dinner in Luang Prabang to celebrate your achievement – 1900km over ten epic days. Raise a glass to that.
- Accommodation: Hotel with a pool.
Day 12: Departure - Transfer to the Airport Click to expand
Enjoy the excellent hotel breakfast, take a stroll to one of the many cafes, or if times allows, take a trip out to the nearby Kuang Si waterfall. When it’s time to catch your flight, we’ll say our goodbyes, give man hugs and arrange for a taxi to take you to the airport!

Faqs click to expand, can i get a local sim card click to expand.
Yes, please do 🤠 The 3g/4g network is extremely good in Laos and a $5 top up should easily be enough to last you the trip.
How much spending money will I need? Click to expand
As this is a largely inclusive tour, you won’t need much. You will only need money for the items not listed as inclusions, which is mainly just alcohol, souvenirs and any other personal spending. $100 – $200 should be quite sufficient.
Is wi-fi available throughout the trip? Click to expand
Yes – only 3 of the overnight accommodations don’t have wi-fi.
What will the weather be like? Click to expand
We only schedule our Laos motorcycle tours during the dry season, so we’re unlikely to get caught in too much rain (although it’s always possible, so we recommend bringing a lightweight waterproof layer that you can stuff into your backpack).
There will be a fairly wide range of temperatures, from as low as 10°c (possibly even lower if we’re unlucky!) in the hills, up to 35°c in the lower altitudes. It’s therefore important to carry a backpack with some extra layers inside.
Can you cater for vegetarians, vegans or those with food allergies? Click to expand
Laos locals enjoy their meat and there is very little on the standard menu that is 100% vegetarian or vegan. While we never let you go hungry, and we will bring extra supplies with us if required, please be aware that the options will be quite limited. We’ll ask you about your dietary preferences in a pre-tour form and we’ll plan accordingly.
As for food allergies, we will make every effort to communicate your requirements to the kitchen. If you have concerns, please do get in touch so we can discuss these with you.
Do I need a visa? Click to expand
This depends where you are from originally, but the likelihood is that you’ll need a visa for Laos. You can get a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport or you can apply for an e-visa online in advance.
Follow this link for the most up to date entry requirements for Laos. This link to the UK foreign office website – if you are not a UK resident, please search for the equivalent info from your home country’s foreign office.
Visa costs, if applicable, are not included in the tour price.
How do I book? Click to expand
To secure your place we simply need a 20% non-refundable deposit (subject to a minimum of £500). The remainder does not need to be paid until 60 days prior to the tour start date.
Is Ride Expeditions insured? Click to expand
Yes. Here at Ride Expeditions, we take the necessary precautions to ensure that we protect both ourselves and you as the customer, with insurances covering financial failure, public liability, professional indemnity and employers liability (you will need your own travel insurance).
To obtain this insurance we must meet strict safety standards and local regulations. We must also carry out thorough risk assessments about all aspects of a tour before tyres can hit tarmac (…or dirt!).
Is my money safe? Click to expand
Yes. All passengers booking with Ride Expeditions Ltd are fully insured for the initial deposit, and subsequently the balance of monies paid as detailed in your booking confirmation form. The policy also includes repatriation if required, arising from the cancellation or curtailment of your travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Ride Expeditions Ltd. This insurance has been arranged by Towergate Travel through Evolution Insurance.
Is this trip suitable for those with limited mobility? Click to expand
Not riding the motorcycle, no (although this will of course depend on the extent of your limited mobility). However, we may be able to accommodate you in our support vehicle. We advise you to give us a call and we can discuss.
What are the health / immunisation considerations? Click to expand
For the most accurate and up to date info, we advise you visit the ‘Travel Health Pro’ website .
Please also consult with your own doctor at home at least 8 weeks before your trip.
What documents / licenses do I need? Click to expand
To be legally riding in Laos you are required to carry your local driving licence, which must cover the size of bike you will be riding. This will also be a stipulation of any travel insurance company too.
You will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is basically an official, multi-language translation of your driving licence.
It is also a legal requirement that you carry your passport with you at all times. The police may issue a fine if you’re unable to present ID when asked.
What is the average group size? Click to expand
Average group sizes are 8-9 riders and we limit the groups to 12 riders.
What is the cancellation policy? Click to expand
If you cancel your booking before departure, cancellation charges will be applied as follows:
- 61 days or more before tour start date – retention of deposit

Scenery and Culture
Laos is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the region, reflecting its geographic location as a crossroads of Asia. Vivid nature, beautiful landscapes and a vibrant culture collide with a painful past and optimistic future to make Laos an enigmatic experience for the adventurous. Laos cherishes many of the traditions that have disappeared in a frenzy of development elsewhere in the region.
It’s hard to believe the sleepy city of Vientiane is an Asian capital. Then there’s the timeless quality to rural life, where stilt houses and paddy fields look like they are straight out of a movie set. Expect to discover a country untainted by mass tourism and Asia in slow motion.
Hospitality and FOOD EXPERIENCE
People are by nature very warm and welcoming. There is usually a gratitude from the locals towards tourists. Out in the countryside, kids are waving as we pass by. A school visit where we donate needed supplies is a humbling forever lasting experience.
Laos’ national cuisines are sticky rice, larb (a spicy mixture of marinated meat or fish) and tam papaya salad. Lao cuisine has many regional variations, corresponding in part to the fresh foods local to each region.
A French legacy is still evident in the capital city, Vientiane and Luang Prabang where banquettes are sold on the street and French restaurants are common and popular, which were first introduced when Laos was a part of French Indochina. Our guides will make sure you get the opportunity to try many different dishes. We have mainly selected smaller boutique hotels, often blending into the natural environment, with leisure facilities for you. Enjoy a massage followed by a swim in the pool after a riding day.

On one of our Laos motorcycle tours , away from the big cities, it feels like its 30 years back in time versus Thailand.
You will experience a much more rural feel on a Laos motorcycle tour, there are less than 7 million people in Laos versus Thailand’s 67 million population. So why pick a Laos motorbike tour? This country is still very untouched since the Vietnam War era, on one of our motorcycling adventure tours you can still experience ethnical tribal cultures that date back 1,000’s of years, it's becoming harder and harder to find.
The U.S's most secret CIA base that never existed. So secret in fact, it wasn't on any Laos maps! During the Vietnam War this was the busiest airport landing strip in the world & no-one even knew it existed - "LS 20 A" (Alternate).
Nestled between mountains on 3 sides, it had been a restricted no go area to the general public for 30 years, but now has been opened up & gives a great opportunity for inclusion in a dirt tour in Laos.

Motorcycle tours in Laos | Exploring Laos by two wheels
Motorcycle tourism is a form of tourism that is growing rapidly in other parts of Lao PDR and around the world, and for which information is often difficult to obtain. This article’s aim is to encourage travelers to be able to simply reading essential information that can substantially enhance the motorcycle travel experience, and so will benefit readers wanting accuracy as well as adventure from their holiday. By doing so, they will be providing valuable assistance to the backpackers and independent travelers whom Laos welcomes each year. Such people participate in sustainable tourism by living with and among the locals, who benefit both financially and by developing a better understanding of the visitors who become lifelong friends.
The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a small but geographically diverse part of Southeast Asia. It occupies an area somewhat larger than Great Britain, including the Lao high plateau, the western edge of the Annamite mountain range along with plains adjacent to the Mekong River not far from where the river crosses into Thailand, Cambodia, and a strip of land along the Mekong. The Mekong and Lao Mountain Ranges in western Laos are the result of millions of years of orogenic (continental) collisions that produced a spine of land reclining eastward from the edge of the Indian Plateau, with rifted basins and parallel hills that stripe the landscape. On the western edge of the mountains, the high altitude sector of world climate is controlled by two systems, in fact: the monsoon system (generally west-southwesterly airborne moisture) and high pressure in the interior of China during winter. Northern Laos is known for its harsh winter and a very dry climate, although the distance from any of the great oceans is at least 1500 km.
The most compelling portrait of a ride through Laos is of a traveler on the road, letting his perceptions define the journey. The roads themselves, less than two decades old, and the towns along the way are still in the process of revival from centuries of quiet isolation. The outside world is still at the rim of existence, beyond mountains that blocked the country in all directions but the Mekong River. Knowing a bit of the complex geography that isolated Laos from its neighbors and of the deep-rooted culture that united the people during a long period of stasis may lend an additional allure to a story of motorcycling the land, bringing the traveler’s perceptions of the people and places into even stronger relief.
While motorcycle touring in Laos is adventurous, it is not an activity that is limited to experienced riders. There are now an increased number of tour companies, both in and outside of Laos, who rent bikes and provide riders with the option of being accompanied by a guide and/or traveling with a backup vehicle. The specific points of interest may differ tour by tour, but the experience is fairly standard: mornings are spent riding between 100 and 150 km over varied terrains, and afternoons are given over to sightseeing and meeting the locals. A special trip-inclusive sight is riding on a local fishing boat constructed from small bits of wood lashed together. Most tours end with a refreshing swim in a waterfall before the day is done.
Motorcycle tourism in Laos has risen in popularity over the past several years as a way for adventure-seeking travelers to see more of the country than they might be able to by bus or by foot, exploring hidden areas not mentioned in traditional guidebooks, and becoming more acquainted with the local ethnic groups. Popular trips range from two or three days up to five days, offering motorcyclists an intimate view of rural life, along with picturesque views of terraced rice fields and magical scenery in three of the country’s most stunning regions for motorcycle touring.

The 5 Best Things to do in Laos on a Motorcycle
Welcome to the 5 BEST things to do in Laos on a motorcycle. This guide is packed with info on biking routes, maps and places to visit on your Laos motorcycle trip.
The BEST motorcycle riding in Laos
Landlocked Laos is raw, rural, rustic and absolutely perfect for motorcycle travellers. It’s not developed like Thailand and not as touristy as Vietnam, so riding through Laos feels like discovering new lands. We fell in love with Laos, it’s one of our favourite destinations and we know you’ll love it too. This guide lists 5 of the best things to do on a motorcycle in Laos, whether you’re riding with your own bike, renting one in Laos or from one of the neighbouring countries and crossing into Laos.
For a detailed info on everything you need to know about Laos, we suggest you check out our travel guide and adventure blog.

The ultimate Laos road ride: Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang
The best road ride in Laos is from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. And it’s not just the ride there, but the two destinations are well worth exploring on two wheels as well!
From Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang (or vice versa), you’ve got two options: the east number 13 route or the west number 4 route.
The prettiest route is the western route. Deep green karst burst out of the ground and line the horizon, behind them a blanket of blue and grey mist. The road goes through little towns and villages, wraps its way round lime green rice fields and up and over mountains and beautiful scenery.
- The 141-mile western route is about three and a half hours and gorgeous.
- The 114-mile eastern route is around five and a half hours and full of twists and turns.
If you can, then go in a loop from either Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng down one side and up the other. If you have plenty of time, we suggest staying in both places for a few nights.
Vang Vieng is a tourist town halfway between the capital, Vientiane, and Luang Prabang city. It used to be the place to go for boozy younger crowds to drink on tubes as they float down the river. The partying got out of hand and the government reinvented the town to be more family and adventure focused. Anyway, it’s still a party place, but nowhere near as bad. Exploring Vang Vieng on a bike is brilliant fun because there are so many off-road trails, hidden caves and pristine lagoons. You can spend days riding on dusty trails and over ropey bridges while searching out dark caverns and dipping in crystal blue waters.
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is Laos’ most visited city and it’s easy to see why. Delicious coffee, sweet carrot cakes, a bustling night market, copious tasty street food and a chilled-out vibe. It’s one of our favourite cities in the world. But for riding, it’s the gateway to incredible off-roading. See number 2.
Don’t forget to visit the stunning Kouang Si waterfall while you’re in Luang Prabang!
Go off-road with enduro riding
Laos is a phenomenal country for off-roading and enduro riding. And the best the country has to offer is in the north. Make a base in Luang Prabang and head out into the many jungle trails from there.
You can go on our own or as part of a tour or enduro group. The off-roading can be gnarly, so renting a proper enduro bike is always a good option.
Here are some of the main off-road destinations in northern Laos.
If you’re after an off-road tour or want to rent an enduro bike in Laos, take a look at our recommended rental companies page for Laos.

Warning: Be careful if you venture off on your own. Laos is the most bombed nation in the world after the US dropped over two million tonnes of cluster bombs on it from ’64-’73 during its ‘Secret War’ to disrupt supply lines to the Vietnamese. That’s more than all the bombs dropped in the whole of WW2 combined. Over 30% of those bombs failed to detonate and still kill and maim people in Laos today (20,000 since the war ended). Removing these bombs is still a huge and ongoing project in Laos. Make sure you stick to marked trails!
Ride the Thakek Loop
If you Google motorcycling in Laos, the Thakek Loop will always come up. It’s regarded as one of Laos’ best biking roads. But that’s because it’s now a relatively easy loop for tourists to rent a scooter from Thakek and ride it. If you’re on a larger capacity motorcycle, or your own bike that you’ve brought in, you will have no doubt ridden much more spectacular roads than this one and the ride from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang is far, far better. The reason that’s not talked about as much is because most tourists won’t rent a bike to ride from one city to another.
However, that doesn’t mean the loop isn’t worth the ride. It’s a lovely stretch of road that veers eastwards of the main road that connects Laos’ north and south. You head east and along gorgeous stretches of long winding roads. The road is quiet, peaceful and fun if you like to wring the throttle.
The full loop, including riding down to the Kong Lor cave is about 270 miles. If you’re heading north or south and want to ride the loop, then you don’t need to ride the main road stretch as it’s just boring straight carriageway.
Kong Lor Cave (means beauty in the dark)
But the highlight of the Thakek Loop is taking a detour to see the Kong Lor Cave. In fact, it shouldn’t even be classed as a detour as it’s the best bit! The ride takes you through Laotian villages and through Laos’ rural countryside. When you get to Kong Lor, there are plenty of beautiful little guesthouses to stay. We ended up at a stunning resort for £8 a night with its own private lagoon!
The Nam Him Bun river cuts its way through the entirety of the limestone mountain, and so to explore the cave you need to hire a boatman. The cave is over four miles long (you go in one end and come out the other at a remote village), over 100 metres high and around 100 metres wide in places too and fully stocked with bats.
At the beginning the boatman lets you jump off for a bit and explore a section of stalagmites by foot, then it’s back in the boat for four miles of cold, pitch black darkness. You can actually take a bike through on the boat, but it’s dodgy. If you have a moped then that’s easy enough to haul over the rocks to get to the boat. If you’re on a 250cc (I doubt you’d get anything bigger down there), then you better be a good rider! You can always, ride to the little village on the other side and get the boat back if you prefer.
Check out our little video…
Head deep into Laos’ Northern Mountains
Roads twirl up and around Laos’ northern mountain range, carving their way through remote villages filled with tribal folk and past wooden houses held up by stilts and perched over deep hills. The weather drops up here, the country opens up and the tarmac spirals into endless twists and turns. It’s phenomenal, and you won’t find any tourists here either. If you’re after road riding and enjoy switchbacks, tight turns and mountain passes, then this is the ride for you.
If you’re entering Laos from Thailand or exiting to Thailand, then you can easily incorporate parts of this route from the Huay Xai border to Luang Prabang.
Enjoy Laos Life on the 4,000 Islands
Despite being a landlocked country in the heart of Southeast Asia, Laos has islands… around 4,000 of them! Well, not exactly that many, but that’s what the Si Phan Don region of southern Laos is called. It’s a riverine archipelago in southern Laos on the mighty Mekong River.
The region is right on the border with Cambodia and is a perfect stop over if you’re entering or exiting Cambodia.

- Cambodia blog post: Tomb Raider
Fair enough, you might be wondering why a bunch of islands are on the 5 best things to do in Laos on a motorcycle page… Here’s why, Don Det is the main island and it’s gorgeous. You can take your bike to the island using a catamaran from the mainland for around £5. Once there, you’ll be riding around a gold sand filled island, on roads shaded by swaying palm trees. There are plenty of tourists on the island, but tourism is intergrated with the local natives here and so it’s a much more authentic and relaxed place than your typical SE Asian island.
You can find plenty of teak wooden cabins, complete with lazy hammocks out front overlooking emerald green water for around £7 a night!
Taking a relaxing ride around the island is so much fun. Head through the heart of the island, go off-roading as you search for waterfalls, abandoned colonial French railways and be sure to check out the endangered Irrawaddy river dolphins too.
There’s plenty of sand and tarmac if you prefer. Don Det and the 4,000 Islands is a beautiful part of Laos. It’s relaxed, easy going and peaceful. Take your bike here, chill in a hammock, explore and try the lime shakes.

Hi, we are looking for a one way bike hire from vang Vieng to luang Prabang in Laos. We presume this will mean the same company must exist in both towns, one to hire the bike and one to leave the bike. Do you know if there are any companies that offer this? I would look forward to a reply! Many thanks! Ryan and Joanna
Hi Ryan, thanks for your comment. Take a look at our Recommended Rentals and Tours Companies page and click on Laos. You’ll find Chris’s details there. Get in touch with him as he’s the man in the know. Hope this helps, cheers, Andy
Hello! Thanks a ton for taking the time to share info on great riding in Laos. I just got back (December 2023) and wanted to my experience on the Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng route:
I took the western route that follows road 4. You start on the 13 for a bit, where the road is in okay shape – limited serious potholes. Once you split to take the 4, that road is excellent with the exception of a couple kilometers after you reach the top of the mountain with the view point cafe. However, once the 4 connects back to the 13, the road is terrible. HUGE road-width potholes every hundred or so meters, large sections of pavement just gone. You can’t really get up to any actual speed because the road is so bad and unpredictable. To add to that, the road is really busy and packed with huge 22-wheelers. They fly through any paved section, chasing you down, and then crawl through the unpaved/potholes so you either try to pass them again, or crawl behind them. And because the road is bad, there is unending dust. This lasts for the last 60 kilometers.
In sum, yes, the route is stunningly beautiful and an amazing ride up until those last 60 kilometers. Everything you would want out of a moto ride. But just be prepared for those last 60 kms. I probably would still do it, but at least knowing can prepare you. Also, there’s no way to do it in 3 1/2 hours. Even google maps estimates nearly 5 hours. It took me 7 1/2, but I stopped for lots of pics and coffee and am not a super fast rider. But even if you fly through the first part, the last 60 kilometers are going to take you around 2 hours. I had heard the eastern route road (13) was really bad, and google maps estimated nearly 8 hours for that route, so I didn’t dare try it – the thought of battling that level of pothole for the entire route was too much. And the 4 was so stunning, I definitely didn’t mind riding it again on my way back north.
Hi Fiona, thank you for your comment and for sharing all of this invaluable information! Sounds like it was a great trip but with some tough sections – especially the last 60ks! It’s really interesting to hear how bad that road has become! We did not experience or have that when we rode it. Of course, roads are always subject to change. Really appreciate your report, i’m sure readers who are planning a ride there will find it incredibly helpful too. I hope you enjoy the rest of your bike travels, wherever they may be 🙂 All the best, Andy

- JoeM UK ★★★★★ a month ago I joined the 20 DAY TOUR (The Great Thailand Ride) in May. The tour was absolutely great. Our tour had a well planned mix of challenging riding through hills, along rivers and winding back-country roads with lots of local cultural site … More stops to see. The tour team (guide/support driver) were very accommodating and well organized. We stayed at a some amazing hotels in select areas. After our long days of riding, each hotel was prepared for our arrivals and got us settled right away. The rest days allowed us to spend time exploring local towns/etc. The weather was really hot and the team were careful to plan much needed stops for rests/water/coffee. Our guides were very professional and made the trip a lot of fun. It was so convenient to have the support truck collect and deliver our luggage at each stop. I've planned another 20 trip for 2025 to Tibet with these guys. I can't say enough about how well organized the tour teams are. Highly recommended.
