Because Barbados is a relatively small island - 21 miles (34 km) long and no more than 14 miles (23 km) wide - all attractions are close to the port, allowing the cruise traveler to enjoy a leisurely day at a laid back pace.

Cruise travelers will find lots of things to do in Barbados: be it perusing impeccably preserved landmarks (like the Parliament Building and Museum, a couple of churches, or the Synagogue and its Museum).

If you like contemplating unique sceneries don't miss the Bathsheba Bay or the Gun Hill Signal Station . For those that enjoy active pursuits, or just basking in the sun there are many and delightful beaches in Barbados, relatively close to the cruise port.

After all, Barbados rich history and cultural past are preserved in an exotic but harmonious mix of quaint tropical ambiance, lush landscapes, beautiful landmarks, and stunning beaches. It should be underlined that Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

The Cruise Port aka Deep Water Harbor is located on the South-Western side of the Island and, although not exactly right by the center of Bridgetown, it is within walking distance - 1 mile (or 1.700 meters) - to the main streets of the city.

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

Within walking distance

For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Photo of Walking Path to Bridgetown Barbados

Walking Path to Bridgetown

The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .

The Highlights of Bridgetown

Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).

After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).

If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:

  • Colombian Emeralds
  • Diamonds International
  • Litlle Switzerland
  • The Royal Shop
  • David Yurman

It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.

Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

Getting Around Barbados Port

  • The official currency in Barbados is the Barbados dollar (BBD) and the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 2 BBD. US currency is widely accepted across the island, and most stores and restaurants accept major credit cards too.
  • The port area and the city center are flat and suitable for people with walking difficulties/wheelchair users.
  • Bridgetown city center is located within a 10-15 minute walk from the port. There is a waterfront boardwalk that stretches between Port Barbados’ Main Gate and the historic city center along Princess Alice Highway. The walk is pleasant and scenic. For those who prefer not to walk, there is a convenient shuttle service from the terminal building to downtown.
  • The Barbados Transportation Board operates public buses across the island and you can check bus schedules at www.transportboard.com . Even though this is the cheapest way to get around, this may not be the most convenient due to the ship’s limited time in port.
  • Taxis are probably the best way to explore the island, however, they are not metered. I strongly suggest you visit the tourist information office and get guidance about official fares before hiring the taxi, so you know what to expect and always agree on the price in advance with the driver. Check out the taxi prices on Barbados.org .
  • Rent-a-car is another convenient option, especially if you travel with a group. Check out Barbados rent-a-car deals and prices
  • Barbados has warm tropical weather with pleasant temperatures all year round. The dry season lasts from mid-December to mid-April and this is the best time to visit the island. The rainy season lasts from July to November and tropical storms may occur during that period.
  • Barbados International Airport (Grantley Adams Airport) is located 17 km/10.5 miles from the port of Barbados.

It’s worth noting that while US dollars are commonly accepted, it’s still a good idea to have some Barbadian dollars on hand for smaller purchases or if you venture off the beaten path where credit cards may not be as readily accepted.

You can easily obtain local currency by visiting an exchange bureau or withdrawing cash from ATMs using your debit card. The use of credit cards is also widespread on the island.

Avoid walking alone at night or in poorly lit areas; instead, opt for well-lit and populated streets whenever possible. Lastly, respect the local laws and customs while enjoying your time in Barbados – this will help ensure a positive experience during your visit.

Barbados Cruise Port: Tips, Excursions, Weather

A Barbados cruise port visitor may feel disappointment on arrival at the cruise terminal after getting a first glimpse of this popular Caribbean island. It all looks so commercial and not like a lush Caribbean island.

Barbados is a fairly large island at 166 square miles and a fairly populated one at 300,000 people. So the commercialism is not a surprise.

It also gets populated with tourists. A half million people visit the island every year for hotel and resort vacations, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). It is one of the 10 most popular Caribbean destinations for hotel visitors. Another half million visit by cruise, the CTO says.

The cruise port at the capital city of Bridgetown is used heavily for commercial freight and other needs of this bustling former British colony.

But cruise visitors need not worry. They will find Barbados has plenty of things to do, food to eat and tropical beaches for sunning.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is barbados.

Barbados is in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, which makes it a common cruise destination for both eastern and southern Caribbean cruises. It is about 100 miles southeast of St. Lucia. Only Grenada and Trinidad are farther south in the eastern Caribbean.

Cruise Port Terminal

Barbados cruise port map.

Cruise ships arrive at the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal. It is one mile west of the city center. The modest cruise terminal has more than 60 duty-free shops that sell goods that most cruisers will find at major Caribbean ports. They include jewelry, clothing (plenty of T-shirts), crystal and liquor. The terminal also has vendors that sell local food and beers.

Two more attractions are a quick walk from the terminal. They are the Chattel House shopping area next to the terminal and Bridgetown Public Fish Market across the street.

At this point, visitors can decide if they want to make the one-mile walk downtown, take a taxi there or go on an excursion that includes transportation. If they walk downtown on Princess Alice Highway, they can stop at about the half mile point at the Pelican Craft Centre. It has retail shops, arts and craft shops and a gallery among other attractions.

For us, we didn’t mind walking on our first visit. On the second visit, the heat encouraged us to take a taxi. Expect to pay taxi drivers about $5 per person one way to get there.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

turtle

Walking Around Attractions

Broad Street is the place to go. It has some of the city’s historic attractions, such as St. Mary’s Anglican Church, built in 1825, and the Barbados Parliament Building, which has a beautiful clock tower and vaulted windows.

St. Michael’s Cathedral, which was built in the mid-17th century, is nearby as well. We also enjoyed lunch on a warm and breezy day overlooking Constitution River right by Independence Arch and Independence Square.

Shore Excursions

Outside of the city, one of the best experiences on the island is snorkeling with sea turtles . Visitors will take a boat out of Bridgetown to a nearby location, just off the coast, where a large number of hawksbill sea turtles gather because they have become comfortable with human contact.

Visitors can snorkel with the turtles while guides feed them. The turtles come within just a few feet of people in the water, but they veer away if anyone gets too close. The excursion usually costs about $60 to $70 per person with discounts for children if visitors get there by boat. Some options that go directly to the beach by the turtles are less expensive. Prices vary according to amenities. We paid extra for a catamaran tour that included snorkeling and a beach visit.

Harrison’s Cave , a stream cave system more than a mile long, is another popular attraction. It also is a common shore excursion of the cruise lines. The cave is 10 miles northeast of the cruise terminal, so it requires a taxi, rental car or excursion bus to reach it. Prices for a Harrison Cave shore excursion start at about $125 per person.

Like several other Caribbean destinations, Barbados has an Atlantis submarine. This 48-person submarine with viewing windows dives as much as 150 feet during a 45-minute underwater tour. Prices start at $90 per person with steep discounts for children.

Other attractions include the Flower Forest, which has 50 acres of flowers, animals and trails. Andromeda Natural Gardens is six acres of flora and fauna. Ocean Park is a marine aquarium with 26 exhibits. St. Nicholas Abbey in northern Barbados is a 350-year-old Jacobean plantation house, syrup factory and rum distillery.

The island has seven golf courses at last count. Sandy Lane, Rockley and the Rockley Tree Plum courses are closest to the Bridgetown cruise port.

Beaches Near Cruise Port

Beach lovers will find more than 60 of them stretched across 70 miles of sand. The best of the bunch is Crane Beach in St. Philip parish, according to Barbados Tourism Marketing . It is on the other side of the island and is a 40-minute drive from Bridgetown.

Anyone who doesn’t want to take the time to go to Crane Beach will find three popular beaches just north of the capital. Excursions may cost as little as $20 a person. Cruise visitors may find that taxis are cheaper.

One of the most popular beaches for cruise visitors is Brandons Beach, which is 1.5 miles north of Bridgetown. It offers water sports, restaurants and plenty of activity.

Brighton Beach lies just next to Brandons. Batts Rock, another beach near Bridgetown has picnic areas, playground, facilities and shade trees.

Another group of beaches lies to the south starting at 1.5 miles from the cruise terminal. They are Brownes, Bayshore and Pebbles, although they really make up just one beach. They are available as a cruise line shore excursion. Some of them cost as little as $15 per person in part because of the short ride. It’s possible to reach them with a half mile walk for anyone who is visiting the city center.

Shopping and Restaurants

Shopping is the first option for any visitor because passengers will walk right off the ship and into the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal in the bustling capital of Barbados.

The terminal has more than 60,000 square feet of space with 20,000 square feet dedicating to shopping. Most of the shops are duty free and offer typical tourist items.

Outside of the main entrance, Chattel Village has 16 more shops in a courtyard environment.

From there, visitors will need to walk or drive about a mile to get to the city center of Bridgetown.

Broad Street provides the bulk of the duty-free shopping. Cave Shepherd is a shopping center on Broad Street and provides some of the best variety in duty-free shopping.

Those looking for local crafts should travel a little farther down the road to Pelican Village, where a wide selection of handcrafts, art and local food is available. Walkers will find it about halfway between the cruise terminal and city center.

Broad Street lies next to Constitution River with some restaurants offering nice views along the opposite bank.

Broad Street offers higher-end shops with duty-free shopping. The more interesting experience lies along Swan Street, which runs parallel to Broad. This cobblestone, pedestrian-only street is popular with local and has many shops and street vendors.

Transportation / Getting Around

The government transit board and private operators provide taxis and minibuses. Taxis are not metered, so confirm the price before getting into the cab.

Government buses are blue with a yellow stripe. There are two terminals in Bridgetown and one in Speightstown.

Car rental agencies are common on this island that is 21 miles long and 14 miles wide in part because beaches, resorts and other major attractions are widely dispersed. Many of the agencies serve the cruise terminal.

Visitors must drive on the left side of the road as common with British and former British territories.

Weather / Best Months to Go

Barbados weather maintains an average high temperature of about 83 degrees Fahrenheit from December through March.

The average high starts to climb in April and hovers around 87 degrees from June through October.

Rainfall is light in the winter and spring, moderate in the summer and heavy in the fall.

Total rainfall is about two inches a month from January through April and peaks at more than five inches in September through November.

Late spring is the best time to visit Barbados for a combination of warm temperatures and low risk of rain.

The most popular months to visit are January, March and especially December.

How to Get to the Beach from Barbados Cruise Port Terminal

Instead, you can take a taxi/shuttle bus to a beach in Barbados.

If you aren't going with one of the excursions from the ship in Barbados (rum tasting at a distillery, Harrison’s Cave, visiting the Green Monkey Eco Discovery, or doing the catamaran and turtle encounter), I strongly encourage you take a taxi to Harbour Lights Beach Bar in Carisle Bay .

Cruising From Barbados What To Do?

Cruising from barbados what to do from embarkation to debarking your ship., now that barbados is a new embarkation port for cruise lines such as royal caribbean cruise lines and many other cruise lines.  here are a few things you can do ashore to enjoy this island before your ship sets sail..

For 25 years I have been advising cruise guests how to get the most out of their cruise vacation.  Embarkation ports are often overlooked and many guests miss out on the delights of these amazing Caribbean islands have to offer on turnaround days.

If you are flying in on your embarkation day you will have time to:

barbados cruise port shopping

  • Brandon’s Beach is a short walking distance from Barbados’ cruise ship terminal, and therefore the ideal destination for some needed sand between the toes and warm Caribbean sea.  Brandon’s beach turns into Brighton Beach as the two beaches merge into each other and appear to be one continuous beach.  Gotta do it, you may not be on a Caribbean beach for a few days if you embark on the ship without sampling this gorgeous Barbados beach.
  • Boatyard or Harbour lights for afternoon drinks and food on the beach. If your flight lands in the morning drop off your luggage at the terminal check-in then grab a shuttle downtown and visit these two fabulous party bars.  Imagine it drinks and food on the beach, can’t get any better.
Make sure you leave plenty of time to head back to the ship before it sets sail, all aboard is one hour before they set sail, so you will need to get a shuttle 2 hours before the ship is scheduled to set sail.  Sometimes the traffic can be busy.

If you arrive the night before and are staying in a pre or post hotel then you can do any of the above or you can do a morning tour or shop before you embark on the ship.  Here are a few options:

Take a Catamaran Snorkelling trip, you can book a sunset cruise on the day of your arrival.  Tour starts at 3:00 pm finishing at 7:00 pm.  Even if you are tired/jetlagged why not enjoy a fabulous sunset cruise, sipping on cocktails then slide into bed for a good night’s sleep before joining your cruise ship the next day. I recommend Cool Running’s they provide transportation to and from your hotel or the cruise ship terminal… snorkeling equipment, unlimited drinks, and buffet dinner. The boat makes two stops: swimming and snorkeling with the Sea Turtles and over a Shipwreck. Enjoy the incredible Caribbean sunset.  What’s not to love for more information head over to the Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruises Website for more information.

Or if you really need to sleep when you arrive, you can always take the lunch cruise which starts at 9:30 am and finishes at 2:30 pm. Again with Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruises provides transportation to and from your hotel or the cruise ship terminal… snorkeling equipment, snorkeling instruction, unlimited drinks, and buffet lunch. The boat makes three stops: swimming and snorkeling with the Sea Turtles… a Shipwreck… and a Beach in a tranquil secluded bay.  To find out more here is the link to the Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruises website.

Barbados is famous for its Turtles and sea life.  Plus who does not love lounging about on a boat drinking cocktails, soaking up the sun.  It is a great way to prepare you for a fantastic cruise.  Here are some tour companies I recommend

If you are a Shopaholic Barbados has some of the best shopping in the Caribbean here is a guide to shopping in Barbados before your cruise.

Do’s and Don’ts of Shopping in Barbados

I’ve been to Barbados 100s of times when I took the job as a Port & Shopping Guide my first ship 25 years ago.  It was the Old Noordam in the late ’90s, we came here every week.  I’m thrilled to have advised thousands of guests about shopping in Barbados ever since.

If you only have a short amount of time to shop during your visit to Barbados.  There is no need to travel downtown; the Cruise ship Terminal is more than adequate if you only have an hour or so before you must get back to the ship.  You can even buy diamonds in an hour in the conveniently located Diamonds International in the terminal.

Got more than an hour then DO head downtown.  The area is full of history and great to walk around. There is a bigger Diamonds International, so if you’re looking for fine jewelry or watches. Ask for Jason or Kisanka they are super helpful.

Diamonds International has an exclusive diamond only available in their locations around the Caribbean. This diamond cut provides superior fire and sparkle with its patented unique design. Browse the collection of diamond rings, earrings, and more!

The premium 90 faceted Crown of Light diamond is a stunning triumph of cutting expertise fused with ingenious design. The diamond’s facets create an innovative cut, distinguished by its magnificent dome, superior sparkle, and fire.

Shopping in barbados

There are many boutiques with a ton of brands.  Such as Breitling, I.W.C., Cartier, John Hardy, and much more tax & duty-free brands. While managing a shopping program for Marella Cruises, I cruised on the Marella Explorer 1 in January 2019. I planned on meeting the Shopping Lecturer on Oceania Riviera.  When I arrived, she had six guests (3 couples) who really wanted to go shopping with us in Lime Grove.  She had told them about how amazing it was, and they absolutely loved it, off the tourist trail, laid back, quiet, clean, and full of fabulous boutiques, shops, cafés, and bars.

Looking for diamonds, then look at Diamonds International, designer brands such as Bulgari and Cartier boutique.  DO take your time we discovered a gorgeous perfume called Kai.  Kai perfume is an oil that you roll on, the smell lasts forever and is a beautiful fragrance.

If you love a bargain and you DO have time to find a local supermarket.  You will often find local items that are more than double the price in airports and tourist areas.

In Barbados, look for coffee and check out Wyndams Dawn Patrol, roasted on Barbados, which smelled divine.   Rum cake, souvenirs, yes you can find these in supermarkets.  Wine and a local beer called Banks beer and of course Ting!  You have to try a bottle of ice-cool Ting not available anywhere except various Caribbean Islands, then DO it.  Add a little Vodka to give it a kick, and have fun.

What are you looking for?

As you are aware there are Duty Free shops, stalls, postoffice etc in the covered terminal area.  Outside Port "shopping" there are many stores selling clothing, handbags jewellery etc, in various small Malls but only safely reachable by taxi.

There are Restaurants reachable on foot by the majority of better places are a taxi ride.

Decide what you are looking for, select your Malls of interest and grab taxis.

Information for CC readers.

Don't forget Bars Restaurants in Barbados are legally bound by their licence to charge local tax and their equivalent of UK VAT tax at 17.5% .  In addition the land tax is 1% based of the Government valuation.  If you do not pay there is a 5% penalty.  Also there could be hidden service fee of 10%.  So all vendors have a short period to cover all the Government taxes, then make a living.  This is why some cruisers complain about Barbados non Duty Free prices.

For  interest, Bajans go to Jamacia etc for a vacation as it is half the price of a staycation

In the cruise terminal there are stalls, shops and general type stores selling a great variety of local products from fans to hot sauce and handicrafts.  No need to exit the port gates.  However, outside the dock gates, after the roundabout, to the left, opposite the sea, there is a complex of stores (looking like the backs of houses, also selling handicrafts etc., but you’ll have to be prepared to run the gauntlet of the mass of taxi drivers trying to make a fare, in order to feed their family.  They can be persistent.

Helpful photos…. Well played.

Forgot to mention…. There is a small Official Barbados Post Office which will stamp postcards, letters and very small parcels.  Shops in the Cruise Terminal sell decent postcards and don’t forget to bring one’s pen

Yes postcards…. One is so Old School

Bridgetown cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-07-02 13:38

Port Bridgetown cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bridgetown, Barbados. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Bridgetown is the main seaport/cruise port, the capital and biggest city of Barbados. Fka Town of Saint Michael, Greater Bridgetown metro area is within the island's Saint Michael parish. Locally referred to as "The City", the most common reference to Bridgetown is simply "Town". The city covers a total area of approx 40 km2 (15 mi2) and has a population around 110,000.

Barbados' second-largest town and port is Speightstown (population around 4,000), located approx 20 km/12 mi to the north along the island's west coast.

Port Bridgetown (locode BBBGI) is located along Carlisle Bay (on the island's southwestern coast). Parts of the metro area (aka ABC Highway) borders with the parishes St James and Christ Church. Grantley Adams International Airport is located 16 km (10 mi) southeast of downtown, and offers daily flights to all major cities in the Caribbean, USA, Canada and the UK.

At its current location, the town was established in 1628 by English settlers. The prior settlement was at St James Town. Bridgetown City is a popular West Indies travel vacation destination and serves as major financial and convention center, as well as a major cruise port of call in the Southern Caribbean. In 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison were designated "UNESCO World Heritage Site".

The cruise port serves the entire Barbados Island (Caribbean Sea). It is managed by the port authority company "Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc". Its largest shareholders (investors) are the country's Government (through the state-owned company "Barbados Port Inc", with 30% share) and the private companies "Goddard Enterprises Ltd" (20%) and "Cave Shepherd & Co Ltd" (20%). The remaining 30% of the cruise terminal's shares are held by the general public (subscribed at the initial building stage of the port's development).

Barbados is included in many Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries, also visiting Leeward Islands (Guadeloupe, St Martin, St Barts, Nevis, St Kitts), Greater Antilles, Windward Islands (Martinique, St Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica), Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba.

Bridgetown Barbados also serves as turnaround (departure) port for cruise liners in the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, P&O UK (fly-cruise deals from Southampton England during the winter season).

In 2017, the cruise port handled a toyal of 818,752 passengers, or 12,9% increase over 2016 (725,020 passengers). Of all these cruise ship tourists, 137,541 stayed overnight (compared to 130,924 in 2016). The port's main source markets are the UK (33,5% share / 222,322 passengers), followed by USA (28,4% / 188,970 passengers) and Canada (12,8% / 85,209 passengers).

In 2021, RCI-Royal Caribbean homeported in Bridgetown (for the first time in the company's history) the ship Grandeur Of The Seas . The liner's winter 2021-2022 program (December 2021 through April 2022) was based on 3 itineraries - all leaving roundtrip from Port Bridgetown. RCI's fly-cruise deals were inclusive of cheaper charter flights from Miami . RCI's Barbados hotel packages offer tourists to stay in premium properties like Hilton Barbados Resort, Turtle Beach Resort, Sea Breeze Beach House Resort, South Beach Hotel Barbados, Radisson Aquatica Resort Barbados, Accra Beach Hotel & Spa.

  • 7-night "Southern Caribbean Explorer" itinerary - to Scarborough (Tobago), Port-of-Spain (Trinidad), St George's (Grenada), Kingstown (St Vincent, Grenadines), Roseau (Dominica), Castries (St Lucia)
  • 7-night "Southern Caribbean Adventure" itinerary - to St George's, Kralendijk (Bonaire), Oranjestad (Aruba), Willemstad (Curacao), Port-of-Spain
  • 14-night "Ultimate Caribbean" itinerary - to St George's, Kingstown, Kralendijk, Oranjestad, Willemstad, Port-of-Spain, Cartagena (Colombia), Colon (Panama), Puerto Limon (Costa Rica)

For winter 2022-2023 season, Port Bridgetown reported a successful season handling 362 booked (358 received) cruise ship visits and 625,847 passengers (608,269 received), which was 86% of the pre-COVID record season 2018-2019 (726,028 passengers, 384 ship berthings).

For winter 2023-2024 (October-April), the cruise port had a record-breaking season with a total of 407 booked cruise ship berthings (392 received) from 26 different cruise line brands, with expected 741,265 passengers (715,527 received). The berthings' number included 18 maiden calls and a total of 217 homeporting operations/roundtrips from Bridgetown.

By annual passenger traffic (statistical data 2019), the Caribbean's top-10 largest airports are:

  • Luis Munoz Marin Airport/aka Isla Verde ( San Juan Puerto Rico ) with ~9,5 million pax
  • Punta Cana Airport ( Punta Cana Dominicana ) with ~7,2 million pax
  • Jose Marti Airport ( Havana Cuba ) with 5,7+ million pax
  • Sangster Airport ( Montego Bay Jamaica ) with ~4,8 million pax
  • Lynden Pindling Airport ( Nassau Bahamas ) with ~4,1 million pax
  • Las Americas Airport ( Santo Domingo Dominicana ) with ~4 million pax
  • Piarco Airport ( Port-of-Spain Trinidad ) with 2,8+ million pax
  • Queen Beatrix Airport ( Oranjestad Aruba ) with 2,5+ million pax
  • Pointe-a-Pitre Airport ( Pointe-a-Pitre Guadeloupe ) with ~2,5 million pax
  • Grantley Adams Airport (Bridgetown Barbados) with ~2,3 million pax

This explains why these port cities are used as seasonal turnaround ports for homeporting (roundtrip itineraries) by many major cruise companies with ship deployments in the Caribbean.

Bridgetown cruise terminal

The cruise port is located approx 13 mi (21 km) from the Grantley Adams Airport (approx 30 min bus drive). The shuttle bus service from the port to downtown is at an additional cost (USD 1 pp). Taxi ride is about 5 min and cost around USD 4 per cab. The walking distance from the port to the city is around 15 min (along the boardwalk).

Beryl becomes 'extremely dangerous' Category 4 hurricane expected to bring life-threatening conditions to Caribbean

Hurricane Beryl has become an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm as it inches closer to the Windward Islands, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surge to the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday.

Beryl expanded its strength for two days, reaching Category 4 strength on a scale of 5 on Sunday before leveling off, the center said in a late-afternoon advisory.

With sustained winds of 130 mph, the storm was likely to be a destructive force through the early week as it aimed for a possible clash with Mexico's Yucatán peninsula around next weekend, according to the hurricane center.

"Fluctuations in strength are common in major hurricanes in conducive environments, and it is expected that Beryl will also fluctuate in strength for the next day or so," the center said in a separate forecast discussion. "There is high confidence that Beryl will remain an extremely dangerous hurricane through landfall in the Windward Islands."

Its center is expected to move across the Windward Islands early Monday, with hurricane conditions, including heavy rain, expected Sunday evening, the agency said.

A strengthening Tropical Storm Beryl on NOAA satellite on Saturday morning.

The Windward Islands include St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Martinique. As of Sunday night, Beryl was about 200 miles southeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. It was moving northwest at around 18 mph.

A U.S. hurricane warning is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago, where hurricane conditions are possible starting early Monday.

The government of Barbados began opening emergency shelters Sunday evening and ordered all businesses to close by 7 p.m. The Barbados Water Authority asked residents to store potable water as it would shut down water lines across the island Sunday night as a precaution, according to a statement.

The Barbados government said the center of the hurricane would travel 75 to 80 miles south of Barbados sometime Monday morning.

Government forecasters said the hurricane could pulse with renewed strength as it passes beneath Barbados, with winds associated with the storm projected to reach near 145 mph.

Flash flooding and hurricane-force winds are likely, the government said. Barbados officials also warned of a low pressure system behind Beryl that could become a tropical depression and affect the country Wednesday if it continues apace.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique, and tropical storm watches are in effect for Dominica and Trinidad, which could all experience tropical storm conditions Sunday night.

“Potentially catastrophic wind damage is expected where the eyewall of Beryl moves through portions of the Windward Islands, with the highest risk of the core in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada,” the hurricane center said.

Life-threatening storm surges may raise water levels by 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels in the hurricane watch areas and bring destructive waves to the coast.

Three to 6 inches of rain is possible across Barbados and the Windward Islands on Sunday into Monday, which may cause flooding in some areas. Up to 10 inches of rain is possible in some areas, especially in the Grenadines.

St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre announced a national shutdown as a result of the hurricane warning that will go into effect Sunday 8:30 p.m. local time. He did not say when it will be lifted. Schools will remain closed Monday, and “employers are expected to cooperate,” he said.

In a Facebook post, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority asked the public to “remain indoors and away from glass windows once tropical hurricane-force winds affect the area.”

“All persons should avoid entering the ocean. Failure to comply with this request puts human lives at risk, including those of our first responders,” the board said. The board also encouraged tourists to contact their airlines to schedule flights home.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has canceled all police leave in preparation for Beryl.

“All officers are requested to report to the nearest police station by 6:00 p.m. today, Sunday, June 30, 2024,” it s a id on Fa cebook .

In Grenada, a state of emergency will go into effect at 7 p.m. Sunday and remain for a week, “unless earlier revoked,” Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said at a briefing.

The country’s National Disaster Management Agency encouraged the public to secure three days of nonperishable food and water as Beryl makes impact. Those in areas susceptible to storm surge were encouraged to move to one of the shelters opened across Grenada.

Mitchell warned the public that “this is not a drill.”

“We need to be calm, we need to pray, but most importantly we need to prepare,” Mitchell said.

All police leave has also been canceled in Grenada, and officers were asked to return to work, according to Mitchell.
