The Best Breweries In Houston

June 11, 2024

Houston breweries range from massive industrial sheds to pint-sized pubs . And while we’ve seen our fair share of limited-run IPAs served in spaces about as fun as the DMV, there are plenty of breweries we're excited about. Here are the 10 taprooms in Houston to try when you want to find your new favorite beer.

8th Wonder Brewery

8th Wonder Brewery has the same energy as that one neighbor who's always cooking up projects in their garage, blasting Skynyrd or an old Screw mixtape, and definitely has a dedicated drinks fridge. This warehouse-turned-brewery in East Downtown isn’t comfortable to hang out in for very long (thanks to the loud music and shoddy metal chairs), but it does have a massive patio and food trucks, and it's basically within earshot of Minute Maid Park. Whether you’re here to eavesdrop on people watching an Astros game or for a midday beer, try the easy-drinking Dome Faux’m cream ale or the chicory-flavored, caffeine-pumped Rocket Fuel. A warning for snobs: every beer, no matter the style, is served in a plastic cup.

best brewery tours houston

True Anomaly Brewing Company

East Downtown

The main focus of True Anomaly, unsurprisingly, is the beer. The EaDo brewery doesn’t offer much in terms of activities, seating, or food (you can bring in take-out). However, they do have a niche space with rocket-themed beers on draught and seasonal beer in large-format bottles, like the Go Flight, a lychee IPA with a cloudy haze, or the Small Giant, a crisp belgian with a peppery finish. If you want to nerd out about beer, this is one of the best breweries to do so.

Saint Arnold Brewing Company image

Saint Arnold Brewing Company

Saint Arnold’s Brewing Company is one of the best beer gardens in the city with an even more stunning view of downtown. The massive Fifth Ward spot has picnic tables lining the grounds, a separate, unofficial play area for children, and an interior with cathedral-like ceilings and painted murals of Saint Arnold holding a glass of beer (of course). If you’re new to Saint Arnold’s, try a flight of their classic pours, and a soft pretzel or loaded fries with pulled pork to keep your Art Car from getting lonely. And if you want some behind-the-scenes action, Saint Arnold’s hosts free daily tours.

Under The Radar Brewery image

Under the Radar Brewery

At Under The Radar Brewery, your objective is to pop a squat at the shadiest picnic table in Houston and find a beer that you want to order again and again for a few hours. The Midtown brewery is mostly covered by tents, and serves as a meetup point for run clubs and a place for dog lovers to have a pilsner while their pooches chase squirrels. While the scenery isn’t great—it’s mostly gravel—this is a great spot to duck off, so come here when you want a lowkey place to drink a Hazy Town IPA without worrying that you’ll run into anyone you know. Plus, if you become obsessed with a beer at Under The Radar, you can order a 64 oz serving to-go.

Platypus Brewing image

Platypus Brewing

With an extensive list of beers and a staff with a mountain's worth of knowledge, Platypus Brewing is where true beer aficionados go. The Australian brewery in the First Ward is mostly a space to sprawl out with friends. And with all-day Happy Hours with brisket flatbreads and weekly steak nights, the restaurant portion of Platypus has just as much to offer as the brewery does. Come here if you take your hops seriously or want a brewery that won’t leave you shoulder-to-shoulder with a bunch of strangers.

Eureka Heights Brewing Company image

Eureka Heights Brewing Company

The Heights

Eureka Heights is roughly the size of a small distribution plant, and sitting 10 feet from their fermentation vessels will make you feel like you're on a brewery tour without having to walk anywhere. After finishing off a pint of a hazy IPA, take your talents to the arcade section and spend an hour or two trying to beat your friend’s pinball high score. Eureka also sells six packs of their most popular beer, so grab a case of Buckle Bunny Beer and bring the party home with you.

Baileson Brewing image

Baileson Brewing

Rice Village

As one of the smaller breweries in Houston, Baileson Brewing still manages to fit a lot in a little bit of space. The Rice Village spot technically has an indoor area, but with open glass doors separating the inside and outside, it feels like one under a giant covering. Baileson rotates its menu of full and mini pours, so you can try a few different options before you commit. Plus, there are usually food trucks around to help you pad your stomach with birria tacos before diving into the next pint.

Karbach Brewing Co. image

Karbach Brewing Co.

Spring Branch

Whenever we go to Karbach Brewing Co., we find our new favorite beer. Their flights come with any five of the rotating beers on tap. So all in one sitting, you can try the citrusy Rodeo Clown, a pale ale, and one of their pilsners. And while the bland burgers and fish don't match up to the beer, Karbach is still worth a visit for the drinks.

Bad Astronaut Brewing Co. image

Bad Astronaut Brewing Co.

Bad Astronaut Brewing Company converted a 36,000-square-foot warehouse into an indoor play area for adults, complete with pool tables, arcade games, and local comics trying out their latest material (advice: order an extra pour while that one guy does his bit about his latest Tinder experience). We especially like the fruity Schwifty Session when the breeze blows through this north downtown space. And while you could come for the atmosphere, their light, fruit-forward beer Love for Manilla warrants a visit alone. Bring your entire friend group to watch the game with your dogs on a Saturday afternoon.

large foamy pint of light pilsner beer next to a menu for Equal Parts Brewery

Equal Parts Brewing

If you’ve ever wanted to drink a beer in the Conservatory of the board game Clue , then check out Equal Parts in EaDo. It’s filled with as many houseplants as tap, and known for its crisp lagers and hazy IPAs. We also like their beer that gets kick-started with koji rice molds, the fruited sours, and barrel-aged porters pumped up with chocolate and cinnamon flavors. So grab a couple of mixed fights, take advantage of the free wifi, and bop along to the old-school pop-punk that always seems to be playing.

pint of amber beer in a glass that reads "Walking Stick Brewery"

Walking Stick Brewing Company

Garden Oaks

Built for the entire family, Walking Stick Brewing Co. feels like Garden Oaks' informal living room—the one where parents won’t get too upset when someone smears chocolate all over the couch. The walls have family photos, pictures of hiking adventures, and decor to rival any Joanna Gaines acolyte. Let your kids run rampant on the front patio while kicking back with a classic British beer, like a refreshing and slightly bitter Crestone ESB.
