WILMINGTON, Del. — Guilty, guilty, guilty.

Hunter Biden, 54, became the first child of a sitting president to be convicted of a crime Tuesday after a federal jury found him guilty of three counts related to lying about his drug use in order to buy a gun.

Hunter Biden Melissa Cohen Biden

The panel of six men and six women deliberated for three hours across two days before convicting the 54-year-old of making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm , making a false statement related to information required to be kept by a federally licensed firearms dealer, and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of or addict to a controlled substance.

The first son stared at the jurors, who had serious expressions on their faces, and made no visible reaction as the verdict was read out by a court official — except to slightly nod his head as the last “guilty” was spoken.

Hunter’s wife Melissa Cohen Biden sat in the gallery behind him, next to her husband’s “sugar brother,” attorney Kevin Morris. She also remained impassive at the news of the conviction.

Hunter then hugged his lead defense lawyer, Abbe Lowell, and other members of his legal team.

First lady Jill Biden, who was present at every day of the trial except one, was caught out by the speed with which the verdict was reached — entering the courthouse still wearing sunglasses about five minutes after it had been read.

Judge Maryellen Noreika did not set a sentencing date Tuesday, but noted that such hearings normally take place about four months after conviction — which would mean Hunter would have to return to court as his father’s re-election campaign nears the final stretch.

The first son faces up to 25 years behind bars — though a lighter sentence is much more likely since he has no prior convictions.

After the verdict, Hunter huddled in a side room with his family for roughly 15 minutes before saying, “Let’s go” and heading to the elevator with Jill and Melissa in tow and flashing a smile.

A few moments later, the first son left the federal courthouse in Wilmington holding hands with his wife. He touched his stepmother Jill on the shoulder before getting in a black SUV guarded by Secret Service agents — and ignored the nearby pack of reporters.

Special counsel David Weiss, whose office brought the charges, told reporters in a brief statement after the verdict that the prosecution “was not just about addiction, a disease that haunts families across the United States, including Hunter Biden. This case was about the illegal choices the defendant made in the throes of addiction.”

The gun application firearms transaction record that Hunter lied about his drug use on

“No one in this country is above the law,” added Weiss, who was not in court when the verdict was read. “Everyone must be accountable for their actions.”

Lowell indicated he would appeal the verdict, saying he was “naturally disappointed” and would “continue to vigorously pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter.”

The first son himself said he was “more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome.

“Recovery is possible by the grace of God,” Hunter Biden added, “and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”

On the evening of Oct, 11, 2018, Hunter, now 54, told a contact to "[m]eet me 7/11 at 3."

Prosecutors Leo Wise and Derek Hines had argued President Biden’s son knowingly fibbed on a gun application form that he did not use controlled substances before walking out of a Wilmington shop with a Colt Cobra .38-caliber revolver on Oct. 12, 2018.

In fact, Hunter Biden was hooked on crack cocaine at the time, a fact he acknowledged in his own 2021 memoir — which the government used as evidence against him, along with witness testimony, the first son’s own communications, and data  taken from his infamous laptop .

Judge Noreika had ruled before trial that prosecutors didn’t have to prove that Hunter was high the day he purchased the weapon.

Jurors  heard a plethora of excerpts from the audiobook  of Hunter’s book — narrated by the first son himself — describing his struggle with addiction and how he had a “superpower of finding crack cocaine anytime, anywhere.”

The jury also saw copious messages in which Hunter appeared to be pursuing drug deals and talked about being high or how he was using — including texting his dealer in the spring of 2018 asking: “Can you get baby powder, the real soft stuff.”

Jurors heard from witnesses including the Biden scion’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle; his ex-girlfriend, Zoe Kestan; and from his sister-in-law-turned-lover Hallie Biden, who was married to Hunter’s brother Beau until he died of brain cancer in 2015.

Buhle testified about discovering Hunter used crack the same year as Beau’s death, when she found her then-husband’s pipe on the porch of their Washington, DC home. She said that when he used he was “not himself,” and was “angry [and] short-tempered.”

Kestan told jurors about dating Hunter for roughly nine months in 2018, a wild period during which she got a front row seat to him smoking crack “every 20 minutes or so.”

Hallie  testified about finding the gun  inside Hunter’s Ford Raptor pickup on Oct. 23, 2018 — 11 days after he bought it — and throwing the weapon away in a panic at a Wilmington grocery store.

Moments later, Hallie recounted, Hunter flew into a rage upon learning she got rid of the .38 and ordered her to retrieve it.

Drugs and alcohol on a table.

But when she returned to the store roughly 30 minutes later, the gun was no longer there. (It was later found and turned in by an elderly man who had been searching the trash for recyclables.)

Lowell told jurors that their client didn’t knowingly lie on the gun application form but rather argued he was in a “deep state of denial” about his drug dependency.

A protester stands outside of the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building on June 11, 2024 in Wilmington, Delaware.

The defense further described Gordon Cleveland, the salesman at the StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply, as a “whale hunter” who pushed Hunter into buying the weapon.

Lowell also tried to poke holes in the prosecution’s timeline of Hunter’s addiction in an attempt to show he hadn’t fallen off of the drug wagon, but was instead struggling with alcoholism.

Hallie Biden, daughter in-law of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs from the J. Caleb Boggs Federal Building after testifying in the trial of Hunter Biden on June 06, 2024

Hunter had pleaded not guilty to all charges in the case, although in June 2023 he was slated to take a guilty plea — only for the deal with prosecutors to blow up in court after Hunter’s team discovered he wouldn’t receive blanket immunity from possible future charges.

The verdict is not the end of the first son’s legal trouble.

He’s  scheduled  to face a case in Los Angeles federal court beginning Sept. 5 for allegedly evading $1.4 million in federal income tax for the years 2016 through 2019.

Popular waterfall hike to Butte Creek Falls set to reopen

nyc gun range tourist

One of the Willamette Valley’s more popular waterfall hikes will reopen Friday after a nearly four-year closure.

Butte Creek Falls, outside Scotts Mills in Santiam State Forest, wasn’t burned by the 2020 Labor Day Fires but all the roads around it were, leading to concerns about vehicle safety in reaching the trailhead and the extended closure.

Hazard tree removal was completed last week and will allow the reopening Friday of the waterfall hike, small campground and new shooting range.

Waterfall hike, small campground

The Butte Creek Falls Trail is short but sweet, at just a little more than a 1-mile round-trip. It passes two striking waterfalls. Hikers can walk behind the curtain of water at 20-foot Upper Butte Creek Falls and look down on nearly 100-foot lower Butte Creek Falls from the trail.

“We were really fortunate the fires skipped over this area,” said Joe Offer, Recreation Program Manager for the Oregon Department of Forestry.

The campground is small, with three campsites.

Improvements to campground and trail, plans for the future

The main waterfall trailhead has parking for five to six vehicles. There is additional parking at the campground, which has a newly improved connector trail to the waterfall trails.

While the campground only has three sites for tents, officials said they’re planning to expand.

“Our future plan is to expand both parking areas, the campground and offer additional camping opportunities within this northern block of the Santiam (near Butte Creek Falls),” said Offer. “But right now we just wanted to get everything open, then start working on new improvements.”

Improved shooting range opens

A nearby shooting range was completed during the closure, officials said. The range is on Butte Creek 615 Road, just off the Butte Creek Mainline Road and a short distance from the waterfall trailhead.

The range was a joint project with the nonprofit Trash No-Land , which is dedicated to responsible target shooting and works to improve safety and reduce fire risks at dispersed ranges across the state.

A new gravel backdrop, concrete barriers at approximately 100-yards, parking and new informational signs were installed, state officials said.

Funding for improvements to the site came from the National Rifle Associations’  public range fund, a news release said.

Why was the area closed for so long?

The area was closed mainly for safety reasons while ODF did post-fire timber harvesting and removed roadside hazardous burned and dead trees.

“This operation was the largest and most challenging of all ODF’s post-fire restoration timber sales as it was within one of the highest severity portions of the fires’ footprint,” Kyle Kaupp, Santiam Unit Forester, said in a news release. “It included more than 20 miles of roadside hazard tree mitigation across multiple road systems, all which were accessible by the same travel route to this recreation area.”

Hampton Lumber signed a contract with ODF on Sept. 15, 2021, for a salvage timber sale that included removing hazard trees along about 20 miles of road that leads to Butte Creek Falls.

The company missed its deadline to complete work at the end of last October due to “a lack of contractor availability combined with bad weather and challenging conditions on the ground,”  a Hampton spokeswoman previously said .

ODF said it has started replanting trees in the forested areas that burned.

“So far, nearly 200,000 seedlings have been planted in this specific area alone,” Kaupp said.

High Lakes Recreation Area still closed

Further up the road, Butte Lakes and Rhody Lake, also known as the High Lakes Recreation Area in Santiam State Forest, remain closed due to ongoing hazard tree removal.

“We are asking folks to not go into that area until all operations are complete and we determine the best way to manage recreation in such a heavily burned landscape,” Offer said.

Directions to Butte Creek Falls

In Scotts Mills, just before crossing a bridge over Butte Creek, turn left onto well-signed Maple Grove Road. After 4.2 miles, turn right at a "T" intersection to stay on Maple Grove Road. Continue on Maple Grove Road for another 3 miles to a "T" intersection with Sawtell Road, marked by a large barn that is a useful landmark for your return trip. Turn right here and continue on paved Sawmill Road for 5.1 miles to a fork. Head left at the fork onto gravel, unsigned Family Camp Road and continue on this rough road, always staying on the more obviously traveled main road. At 3.1 miles go right at a fork, following a small sign pointing to Butte Creek Falls. In another 0.6 miles head right at another fork, following a second sign pointing to Butte Creek Falls. Reach another fork in 0.5 miles and head right again, following a third sign pointing to Butte Creek Falls. From this last fork, continue steeply downhill for 1.1 miles to a bridge over Butte Creek and then pass Butte Creek Campground (Santiam State Forest). The Butte Creek Trailhead is 0.6 miles beyond the campground, on the right. The trailhead has a pit toilet, informational sign and parking for several vehicles.

Politics | NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams won’t rule out late city budget amid friction with Mayor Adams’ team

Mayor Eric Adams and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (New York Daily News)

“Our goal is always to pass a budget that is on time. That is our goal. We are striving to do just that,” she told the Daily News during a press conference at City Hall when asked if she’s concerned Council Dems and the mayor might not reach a deal on the 2025 fiscal year budget by a June 30 deadline.

But then she confirmed the Council has yet to convince the mayor to back off deep spending cuts he’s seeking to a range of initiatives, including early childhood education programs and public libraries .

“We did not want to be in a place of … we’re continuing to restore items that were cut that the Council believes should never have been cut in the first place,” she said. “We’re becoming the Council of restoration instead of the Council of building.”

As first reported by The News this week, Council Democratic leaders recently told members to brace for the possibility of a late budget this year as the mayor continues to publicly push for cuts they vehemently oppose to a range of city agencies. The mayor says the cuts are necessary to offset billions of dollars the city has spent on the local migrant crisis.

If the two sides don’t reach a budget deal by the June 30 deadline, the current fiscal year spending levels will kick in. But Council sources have warned that some buckets of municipal spending could be impacted by a late budget, a risk the speaker highlighted at Thursday’s press conference.

“The next few days will be critical,” she said.

Despite the tension, the mayor maintains he and the speaker have a good relationship and that they will “land the plane” on an on-time budget.

The speaker, who once worked as a flight attendant, offered a more cryptic airplane analogy about the budget Thursday.

“From a Council perspective, I will say this: We have bank left, we’re in a holding pattern, we’re circling the airport and if possible there will be a diversion,” she said.

2 Are Killed in ‘Devastating’ New Mexico Wildfires

The state’s governor declared a regional state of emergency as thousands evacuated. Wind and rain could affect firefighting efforts.

By Derrick Bryson Taylor

Update: Dangerous flooding hits the New Mexico region ravaged by wildfires .

Two fast-moving wildfires in Southern New Mexico that have killed two people, prompted the evacuation of thousands of people and scorched more than 23,000 acres continued to burn out of control on Wednesday, officials said, and it was unclear when firefighters might gain some control.

The wildfires, named the South Fork and Salt fires, began earlier this week amid sweltering temperatures, and shifts in the weather on Wednesday may further complicate efforts to contain them. The South Fork fire, the larger of the two wildfires, has burned more than 16,000 acres and destroyed 1,400 structures, according to the Southwest Area Incident Management Team.

Two people have died, the New Mexico police said in a statement on Wednesday. Both bodies were found on Tuesday in or near the village of Ruidoso, N.M., which is between the two fires. One victim, whom the police identified as Patrick Pearson, 60, was found dead on the side of a road near a motel, with numerous burns, the statement said. The other victim, who was found in the driver’s seat of a burned vehicle on a road, was not immediately identified.

Temperatures reached the upper 80s and 90s in Southern New Mexico on Wednesday. There was a chance of showers and thunderstorms beginning in the afternoon, the National Weather Service said. But expected winds of 15 miles an hour or more might cause the fire to spread.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Lincoln County on Wednesday afternoon.

The warning prompted emergency management officials in Ruidoso to announce that they were “pulling all operations” from certain areas near the fire. “As the units and crews leave these areas,” the officials said on social media, “they will be evacuating anyone that is still in the area to higher ground.”

Firefighters in air tankers and helicopters dropped water and retardant on the flames, while firefighters on the ground constructed firelines. “Changing wind direction and potential for afternoon thunderstorms could create challenging conditions for firefighters in the air and on the ground,” Southwest Area Incident Management Team said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Red Cross said on Wednesday that more than 528 people had sought refuge at nine emergency shelters, and that “hundreds of meals and snacks” have been provided to them.

The organization said it was also “providing emotional and spiritual support, relief supplies and health services, such as replacing eyeglasses and medications,” and that more disaster workers were on the way, including “several tractor-trailers filled with relief supplies.”

At a news conference on Tuesday , Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico emphasized how dangerous the wildfires had become in a short time.

“We have two devastating, enormous fires,” she said. “When I say enormous, it means they are getting more and more complicated to address.”

The expected combination of rain and wind on Wednesday was both good news and bad news, Laura McCarthy, a New Mexico state forester, said at the same news conference. “It also means that this fire is going to be dynamic, at least until we see what rainfall amounts materialize,” she said, adding that the increasing winds might also put homes in danger.

A charred SUV sits in front of a burned adobe home, its roof and windows missing.

Governor Lujan Grisham, who declared a state of emergency in Lincoln County and the Mescalero Apache Reservation because of the fires, called the situation “very serious,” adding that travel around the southern region of the state was not only discouraged but not possible because of road closings.

By Tuesday evening, the wildfires were presenting a clear threat to residents in Southern New Mexico, particularly the village of Ruidoso, which is between the two fires.

The larger wildfire, the South Fork fire, was discovered around 9 a.m. Monday in the Mescalero Apache tribal area. It grew rapidly, and was still zero percent contained on Wednesday, officials said.

The second wildfire, the Salt fire, was discovered a few miles away on Monday afternoon and has since burned more than 7,000 acres of tribal land in mostly inaccessible mountain terrain.

The state said that along with grass, the main trees burning in the fires were pines and junipers.

About 8,000 people had been evacuated from Ruidoso and the surrounding area by Tuesday evening, the New Mexico State Forestry Division said.

At the news conference, Governor Lujan Grisham was asked if she was aware of any people trapped or unaccounted for in the mass dash for safety.

“I don’t have an accurate number, I don’t know that anyone does,” she said. “Again, if you believe that you’ve got a loved one that is in jeopardy, we want to know about it, we want to do everything we can.”
