Viking Cruises is now transporting passengers from Toronto to New York City on a 13-day journey. (Facebook / Viking Cruises)

To avoid the chaos unraveling at Toronto Pearson Airport, travellers can now opt to take a luxury cruise to New York City instead.

There's a cruise ship now transporting passengers from Toronto to New York City on a 13-day journey.

The Viking Cruise starts in Toronto and travels along the St. Lawrence River towards Trois-Rivières, Quebec where the ship makes its first stop.

It then pushes forward to Quebec City and Saguenay, Quebec where historic sites, such as the Château Frontenac and Place Royale, can be visited.

The last two Quebec stops spotlight local wildlife. The cruise will visit Sept-Îles, Quebec where voyagers can go salmon fishing and Cap-aux-Meules, Quebec where there’s seal and bird watching on Brion Island.

Moving onto the Maritimes, the ship will arrive on Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island where travellers can visit one of the province’s biggest draws – the farmhouse that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery to write her famous novel Anne of Green Gables.

On day 11, the second maritime stop will arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There, visitors can travel along the Lighthouse Route to Peggy’s Cove.

Finally, after a day of sailing the Atlantic, the cruise will arrive in New York City.

There’s two more cruise dates scheduled for this summer with prices starting at a whopping $11,695.

This Cruise Ship Will Take You From Toronto To New York City With Epic Stops Along The Way

All the way from the Big Smoke to the Big Apple!

Toronto skyline from the lake. Right: A cruise ship making its way into New York City.

Toronto skyline from the lake. Right: A cruise ship making its way into New York City.

You can take a bus, you can take a plane, you can even take a train all the way down to New York City from Toronto . But, you know what, you can hop on board a boat to NYC, too.

Step right up to Viking Cruise's " Canadian Discovery " adventure, which will disembark from the 6ix and make its way to NYC on a 13-day trip. But, of course, with many action-packed stops along the way.

After the cruise ship sets off from Toronto , the boat will sail through the St. Lawrence Seaway before it anchors at Trois-Rivières in Québec. Here, travellers can likely spot some of the Canadian wildlife the country is known for, or take a culinary tour where you can check out some local favourites.

The next day, the cruise will stop at Quebec City where you can walk throughout the Old Town and hike around the picturesque Mont-Sainte-Anne. On Day 6, the boat will stop off at Saguenay where you can go off on a high-speed "zodiac craft" that will take you right to the fjord.

On days 7 and 8, you'll stop at Sept-îles and Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec, where you can tour the archipelago or go whale watching, and look out for seals on Brion Island.

Then, the cruise will anchor in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island , where travellers can listen to some local music, learn more about the province's rich history, or of course, eat their way through the city.

After a day of sailing through the Atlantic Ocean, the boat stops off in Halifax where you can take a Segway tour or kayak through McNabs Island.

Then after another day out at sea, the cruise will end off right in the Big Apple, where travellers will disembark from the boat and either sight-see in NYC or head straight back home.

Now, while the 2022 cruise dates are all completely soldout, there are still tons of bookings available for 2023 in May and August. That being said, it will cost a pretty penny, as prices to hop on board start at a cool $11,695.

Canadian Discovery: Toronto to New York City

See on Instagram

Price: Starting at $11,695

When: Various times from May and August in 2023

Address: Port of Toronto, 8 Unwin Ave., Toronto, ON

Why You Need To Go: You can set sail for 13 days as you make your way to the Big Apple, and visit many spots across Eastern Canada too.

Accessibility: Viking Cruises recommends that anyone travelling in a wheelchair should be travelling with someone who is able-bodied, as the staff isn't allowed to "lift guests or push wheelchairs." For more details about how to bring a wheelchair on board, guests have to fill out and submit the Accessibility Form 30 days ahead of departure, at the latest. Motorized scooters aren't accommodated onboard.

Before you get going, check out our Responsible Travel Guide so you can be informed, be safe, be smart, and most of all, be respectful on your adventure.

I rode the Jitney bus from NYC to the Hamptons for $41. The bathroom didn't have a sink, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my trip.

  • I took the Jitney coach bus from New York City to the Hamptons for $41.
  • It was a pretty standard coach bus , and the bathroom wasn't great, but it was calm and quiet.
  • I appreciated the charging outlets at each seat and the bus attendant who handed out snacks.

Insider Today

When most people think about the Hamptons, they picture the lap of luxury — and they're not wrong. The average weeklong trip for one person can cost over $1,500.

Although there are $200 luxury buses and $1,000 helicopters out to the tip of Long Island, transportation is the last thing I want to waste money on when planning a trip . Instead, I researched the cheapest ways to get to the summer hot spot from New York City and found seats on a Jitney coach bus for under $50.

Depending on traffic, the ride is only two to three hours long.

I booked a $41 one-way ticket on the Jitney from Midtown Manhattan to the Hamptons. To my surprise, the affordable coach bus was pretty great.

This may be the first time I've ever left on time while traveling from Midtown.

boat trip from toronto to new york

I arrived at the Midtown bus stop across from Bloomingdale's 10 minutes ahead of time and boarded at 8:38 a.m. for an 8:40 a.m. departure.

No one was collecting or scanning tickets, which sped up the boarding process. The bus left right on time, showcasing impressive efficiency.

There are multiple Jitney stops in Manhattan , so the bus was already half full when I got on. If you're traveling with someone and want to sit together, I recommend boarding at one of the earlier Uptown stops.

Make sure to double-check your drop-off location before boarding.

boat trip from toronto to new york

The Jitney buses don't all go to the same place — the eastern shore of Long Island has numerous stops spread out from each other.

Before boarding in Manhattan, it's essential to double-check that you're getting on the correct bus for your final destination.

Since no one checked my ticket, I was a little confused. But I eventually figured out I was getting on the right bus.

There was nothing fancy about the seats, but they did their job.

boat trip from toronto to new york

The bus had four seats in each row with an aisle down the center.

The seats offered a standard amount of legroom , which sufficed, and there were footrests under the chairs.

You could also lean back, but I think that's the easiest way to ruin someone's day if there's a passenger behind you.

The bathroom left some things to be desired.

boat trip from toronto to new york

There was an on-board bathroom, but I'd only use it in emergencies.

It was stocked with plenty of toilet paper but didn't have a sink. Hand sanitizer wasn't provided either, so make sure to pack your own.

The vibes on the bus were different than I was expecting.

boat trip from toronto to new york

Contrary to what I'd heard about the Jitney having a young, party vibe, my Friday morning bus ride on Memorial Day weekend had a mix of people and was relatively calm.

With the shades drawn and the AC on, the bus was a pleasant escape from the heat outside.

To keep things quiet, the bus staff also encouraged minimal phone use during the ride.

I didn't have the best internet connection during my ride.

boat trip from toronto to new york

The WiFi was spotty — I noticed several passengers using their phones as hot spots. If I needed to get a full remote workday in, that's probably the only way I could've done it.

But it was a nice bonus that the bus had outlets to charge phones, laptops, and other electronics during the several-hour drive.

The unexpected hospitality was a nice touch.

boat trip from toronto to new york

The bus was staffed with a driver and an attendant, who was an excellent resource.

As I departed at the last stop, the attendant checked everyone's tickets. Riders could pay on the bus if needed, but I purchased my ticket ahead of time to save $8 off the total cost.

As we were leaving, the attendant also handed out cold water and a snack, which I thought was a nice touch.

The Jitney had all the basics to get me from point A to point B.

boat trip from toronto to new york

There's nothing super fancy about the Jitney, but it certainly does its job. It took me about three hours and 50 minutes to get to the East Hampton stop from Midtown, but that's pretty much what I expected for Memorial Day weekend.

One significant advantage of the Jitney is the multiple times and bus-stop locations every day. The bus runs every other hour, providing flexibility for travelers.

Although the Long Island Rail Road is also cheap at $20 or $30 a ride, I'd definitely suggest the bus over the crowded and often rowdy train.

Overall, for $41, the Jitney was a surprisingly pleasant and efficient way to travel from Manhattan to the Hamptons.

How far Is New York from Toronto and how long will it take to get there?

A road trip from Toronto to New York takes around eight hours and covers a minimum of 760 kilometres (472 miles).

It's at the top end of what most people are willing to drive in a day, but we would strongly encourage you to split it across two or more days. That way you have plenty of time to take things slowly and enjoy some of the things along the way that you would otherwise miss.

If you're unsure about stretching out the trip, take a look at the slightly longer route we suggest. It covers 860 km (534 miles) and takes 8 hours 30 minutes of driving, but provides you with even more to see and do along the way.

Best road trip route from Toronto to New York

The route for our road trip from Toronto to New York begins in the province of Ontario, in the most populous city in Canada. It will take us across the border and through the US states of New York and New Jersey, before bringing us to our destination in America's most populous city, NYC.

It goes without saying that, as this route crosses the international border between Canada and the US, you will need to check whether you need travel documents ahead of your journey. These will vary depending on your nationality, so make sure to plan ahead to avoid any last-minute delays to your trip.

Road trip route from Toronto to New York

Set off west on Queen Elizabeth Way and follow it around the western shore of Lake Ontario, until it brings you to Ontario Highway 420, which you will follow across Rainbow International Bridge and into America. This border crossing can get busy in peak season, sometimes adding an extra hour to your journey.

After crossing the border take Rainbow Blvd south to John Daly Boulevard. Turn right onto this and then, almost immediately, cross the roundabout onto Niagara Scenic Parkway.

Follow this its entire length, along the banks of the Niagara River, until it merges with the I-190. Take that south across Grand Island and then, once you have passed back onto the mainland, exit onto the I-290.

Merge onto the I-90 at Exit 1-49, and follow this all the way to Albany, passing Rochester and Syracuse on the way.

At Albany, you'll switch onto the I-87 and follow it south along the historic Hudson valley.

If you're stopping at Woodstock, leave the I-87 at exit 20, then make your way back to the Interstate to carry on your journey. Or alternatively, simply remain on the I-87 until it merges with I-287, some 193 km (120 miles) away, in Hillburn.

Take that west and then immediately switch onto New Jersey 17 going south. Follow that to its conclusion in Rutherford, where you will switch to New Jersey 3 going east.

This will take you all the way to Union City, where you will make one final change, onto Route 495, and follow it through the Lincoln Tunnel and into New York City.

Best places to stop between Toronto and New York

With your road trip from Toronto to New York City taking around 8 and a half hours, many people reading this would prefer to split the journey up over two days, rather than doing it in just one.

For those of you that would, you have a couple of options to make that stop along the route. Or if you plan to turn this into a longer trip, why not visit them both to see two different sides of New York state?

Once you have decided on your pitstops, you can also check our detailed guide below to learn more about the areas in New York City to help you plan where to stay once you reach your destination:

A tale of two Capitals: from Toronto to Albany

One of the oldest cities in America, originally founded as a fur trading post in 1614, Albany has a population of less than 100,000, compared to NYC's 8.4 million, so it's is a place with a much slower pace and considerably fewer tourists.

With its historic buildings and vessels, dating all the way back to when the city was founded, Albany will fill your trip with a true sense of what the state of New York was like when the first settlers arrived. The beautiful State Capitol and the Schuyler Mansion are well worth a visit, as well as the museums which will help you learn about the legacy of this often overlooked city.

You can be sure of a great stay during your trip to Albany with a stopover at Staybridge Suites Albany Wolf Rd-Colonie Center, an IHG Hotel . A little outside the city center, this traditional style hotel boasts great sized rooms, and beautiful outdoor terrace and gardens, with heated indoor pool and hot tub to relax in after a busy day.

You are also just a short drive to many of the top attractions including Albany Institute of History Art and Capitol Building, with convenient on-site parking as an added bonus.

Chill out in Woodstock

With its bohemian heart and beautiful setting, Woodstock makes for a great final stop. A couple of hours away from New York, take some time here to slow down and relax - the town is a real contrast to the big city that awaits you.

While the legendary music festival of 1969 didn't actually end up here (it ended up with four venue changes, settling in Bethel, NY) you'll still catch an alternative vibe and musical heritage in Woodstock. Take a stroll down Tinker Street to explore its independently owned stores, or enjoy a meal in one of the town's excellent small eateries.

Engage with your creative side when you visit the town's galleries, live music venues and theatres - check ahead to see what's showing when you're in town. If you're planning on spending a longer in the area you could even sign up for a short course at Woodstock School of Art, though these often run across two weekends so they won't suit every road trip itinerary.

Rolling mountain landscape covered in red gold and green trees under a light blue sky

Nestled in the beautiful Catskills and with mile after mile of stunning scenery on hand, Woodstock is also a great base for exploring this wild area.

With this in mind, where better to stay than the fantastic Woodstock Way Hotel, where striking modern design connects perfectly with the natural surrounding s. With immaculately-presented cabins and rooms in a fabulous river-side setting right in the centre of Woodstock, you're perfectly located to explore the town.

While you're here we'd also recommend a walk over to KBD, the town's own Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. It's the perfect place to pause and reflect before you pick up the pace again and carry on towards the bustle of New York City.

  • Rochester, New York - Recognised as a global centre for science, technology, research and development, this is a perfect stop for those interested in learning about the industrial evolution of America throughout the years.
  • Seneca Falls - A small town with historic significance, break your trip here to stretch your legs on a walk through the historic district or beside the water. Just don't expect to see a waterfall, despite the town's name.
  • Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge - An important location along the Atlantic Flyway, this beautiful, swampy, refuge is the perfect location to spot some rare and unusual species of birds.
  • Albany, New York - The capital city of New York state, it is one of the oldest and smallest state capitals in the country.

Best time to go on a road trip from Toronto to New York

Deciding on the perfect time to make a road trip from Toronto to New York is a tricky one, as it depends largely on what you are looking for from the trip.

New York's world-famous Christmas attractions can turn the city into a winter wonderland in December, when you'll be able to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, the Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show, or take a horse-drawn carriage through snow-covered Central Park.

However, you're likely to encounter snowy conditions in Toronto and upstate New York from December to March, meaning that some of the attractions we've recommended along the route won't be accessible. You'll also need to be prepared for driving in harsh conditions.

Waterfall at Niagara with snow covered ground and foliage

A lot of this route lends itself to a visit in the late spring or early fall - May, June and September. Although the state's location on the North Atlantic coast means rain can roll in at any time of year, temperatures at these times are in the mid-20s.

This means you'll be able to enjoy the many lakes, mountains and forests along the route, then stroll around New York City's famous parks and landmarks at your leisure. You'll also skip the crowds and high, humid temperatures that can make summer in the city less relaxing.

Giuliani disbarred in New York as court finds he repeatedly lied about Trump’s 2020 election loss

FILE - Former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani speaks during a news conference outside the...

NEW YORK (AP) —  Rudolph Giuliani , the former New York City mayor, federal prosecutor and legal adviser to Donald Trump, was disbarred in the state on Tuesday after a court found he repeatedly made false statements about Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss.

A New York appeals court in Manhattan ruled that Giuliani be “disbarred from the practice of law, effective immediately, and until the further order of this Court, and his name stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law in the State of New York.”

Giuliani’s attorney Arthur Aidala said they were “obviously disappointed” but not surprised by the decision. He said they “put up a valiant effort” to prevent the disbarment but “We saw the writing on the wall.”

The court said in its decision that Giuliani “essentially conceded” most of the facts supporting the alleged acts of misconduct.

Instead, the decision said, he argued that he “lacked knowledge that statements he had made were false and that he had a good faith basis to believe the allegations he made to support his claim that the 2020 Presidential election was stolen from his client.”

The court said it found that Giuliani “falsely and dishonestly” claimed during the 2020 Presidential election that thousands of votes were cast in the names of dead people in Philadelphia, including a ballot in the name of the late boxing great Joe Frazier. He also falsely claimed people were taken from nearby Camden, New Jersey, to vote illegally in the Pennsylvania city, the court said.

The order states that Giuliani, who had already had his New York law license  suspended  for false statements he made after the election, must “desist and refrain from practicing law in any form,” including giving to another an opinion as to the law or its application or any advice” or “holding himself out in any way as an attorney and counselor-at-law.”

Before  pleading Trump’s case in November 2020 , Giuliani, a former mob prosecutor, had not appeared in court as an attorney since 1992, according to court records.

He was the primary mouthpiece for Trump’s false claims of election fraud after the 2020 vote, standing at  a press conference in front of Four Seasons Total Landscaping  outside Philadelphia on the day the race was called for Democrat Joe Biden over the Republican Trump and saying they would challenge what he claimed was a vast conspiracy by Democrats.

Lies around the election results helped push an angry mob of pro-Trump rioters to  storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6  in an effort to stop the certification of Biden’s victory.

Toronto to New York Drive: 9 Essential Family Stops

' src=

Have you been looking for an affordable yet fun family vacation? The Toronto to New York trip is perfect for families as there are so many great activities en route geared toward kids.

Driving to New York is a fun road trip, especially since it is not super long at just over 8 hours. Vacations can be very costly for families, especially if you need to pay for multiple plane tickets. However, driving to the Big Apple is an affordable way to travel for many families as it only costs a few tanks of gas.

There are very few road trips that offer so many fun attractions along the way like the Toronto to New York drive. There are plenty of restaurants, parks, museums, zoos, amusement parks, and waterparks for families to enjoy together. Not to mention you’ll cross through some of the most picturesque countryside in Upstate New York

So get ready and pack your bags to enjoy this epic road trip , but leave the planning to us . Follow our guide to the best family friend attractions to stop and enjoy along this road trip.

boat trip from toronto to new york

Distance From Toronto To New York

The shortest distance from Toronto to New York by car is 497 miles (798 km). There are two different routes, but they are quite similar and only 10 minutes difference in length of time.

You can either take the I-86 E or the I-90 E for the majority of the drive, depending on which side of upstate New York you want to drive through. The best route for fun kids activities we find is the I-90 E – though you could take one route there and the other back.

Whenever you take a road trip from Toronto, you will want to leave early in the morning to avoid the traffic. You will drive on the Queen Elizabeth Way first around Lake Ontario, and then you will take Highway 420 to the Rainbow International Bridge.

USA Toronto to New York Drive - Queen Elizabeth WAy

The border crossing can be busy depending on the time of year you are traveling, so plan for about an hour at the Canada/United States border. Once you’re in the United States, the fastest way is on the I-90 East, so to break it up we would plan to make a few stops along the way for bathroom breaks, snacks, and some sightseeing.

Pro Tip: Ensure you have all your travel documents, including passports and have the locations of your accommodations, as often the border agent will ask where you are staying.

How Long Do I Need Driving From Toronto To New York

The drive from Toronto to New York is about 8 hours of non-stop driving. Driving with children will require a few stops, normally every 2-3 hours (depending on your kids) so you can definitely drive it all in one day, but it will probably take more like 10 or more hours and leave no time for sightseeing.

You can easily customize your trip depending on how much time you have and how many sightseeing spots you plan to stop and enjoy!  If you want to stop and explore the attractions along the way , we would plan to take two days to drive there.

Best Time Of Year To Drive From Toronto To New York

Choosing when to take a road trip from Toronto to New York City can be challenging as every season offers something different in New York City. New York City is beautiful year-round and offers so many unique things to do, so there is never really a bad time to road trip between the two major North American hub cities.

USA Toronto to New York Drive - Road Trip

New York State is famous for many lakes, rivers, parks, landmarks, and forests, all of which you want nice weather to explore. The most popular time of year is definitely the summer months, from June until September when temperatures are humid, and there are lots of crowds.

Summer also offers an opportunity to capture some of the beautiful sunflower farms in Upstate New York.

However, the spring months offer temperatures in the mid-20s (over 70ºF), and more than likely the weather will be sunny, allowing you to truly explore along the way with fewer crowds.

Lastly, New York is magical in the winter time right around Christmas as you can see the huge Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Centre, take a horse-drawn carriage through the inter wonderland of Central Park or take in a local light show. If you choose to visit in the winter, you will need to be prepared that many stops and attractions are seasonal and may not be open.

Weather between Toronto and New York can also be very harsh in the winter with lots of snow, so you will need to be prepared for hazardous weather and road conditions. Personally, we would not drive without snow tires .

9 Best Stops On A Toronto To New York Road Trip

The following are the best places to visit during a road trip from the urban hub of Toronto to lively New York City.

1. Niagara Falls

Undoubtedly the best thing to see and experience between Toronto and Canada is Niagara Falls.

You can discover and explore any of the three falls: Horseshoe Falls (located in Canada), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls, both located on the American side, which all come together to form the famous landmark of Niagara Falls!

Canada Toronto to New York Drive – Niagara Falls

Enjoy the beautiful views that Niagara has to offer by enjoying a boat tour that takes you up close to both sets of falls. You can take a boat from the Canadian side with Maid of the Mist (American side) or Niagara City tours (Canadian side). Both boat tours give you an up-close tour of the thundering waters that form this famous natural beauty.

In Niagara Falls , New York there are lots of other fun attractions to check out, including Journey behind the Falls which allows you to explore the tunnels through the bedrock and hear the roar of the waterfalls as you stand behind the falls, or get up close on the observation deck.

A newer attraction is the historic Niagara Parks Power station which allows you to explore the first major power plant and learn all about its rich history through this interactive exhibit.

If the weather is bad, then you may want to check out Niagara Fury, the 4D cinema that tells the story of the last ice age. Enjoy an adventure of a lifetime as you take a cable car across the Niagara River and view the Niagara rapids and the river.

Pro Tip: You will want to pack a poncho as you are sure to get wet from the mist from the falls on either of these excursions.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo is the second most populous location in New York State. One of our favorite places to stop and visit whenever we are in Buffalo is Walden Galleria Mall , which is home to 200 stores, and 8 full restaurants.

boat trip from toronto to new york

Walden Galleria offers a variety of entertainment options, including arcade games at Dave and Busters, a one-of-a-kind story-driven experience at 5 Wits Adventure Entertainment, cinema, escape room, and Billy Beez indoor playground.

If you prefer an outdoor adventure, then stop at the “Grand Canyon of the East” known at Letchworth State Park . The Genesee River flows over three different waterfalls high above the lush forest floor, and you are sure to enjoy those waterfall views, and many other scenic spots as the park has over 66 miles of hiking trails.

If you don’t like hiking, then you may enjoy the nature programs, biking, kayaking, or whitewater rafting opportunities offered inside this state park, one of the top nature spots in New York .

Rochester

Rochester is a city that is rich in history and heritage and is full of old industrial buildings, picturesque parks, and amazing museums for kids.

A great pit stop for families is The Strong Museum of Play which is 100,000 square feet and home to the Toy Industry and Video Game Hall of Fame. The museum is designed to inspire curiosity in kids through interactive play experiences, including a pretend grocery store, giant Etch a Sketch, Lite Brite, an obstacle course, retro video games, and an indoor butterfly garden.

This is a great road trip stop for the whole family as it takes about three hours to explore, and also has a kid-friendly diner that even the pickiest eaters will find something to enjoy!

USA Toronto to New York Drive - Ronchester

Pro Tip: If you are traveling at the beginning of the month, the first Friday of each month offers half off general admission!

If you are looking to stretch your legs from the long car drive, then you will want to check out the park system, which has many well-marked trails along the Erie Canal. You can explore the waterways by canoe, kayak, or a simple stroll on the paved paths.

Animal lovers will enjoy a visit to the Seneca Park Zoo , which is home to a wide variety of animals from around the world, including lions, baboons, river otters, polar bears, and many more! The great news is that the Zoo is open all year long, so you can visit no matter when you travel through Rochester.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Stretch your legs and view a haven for natural wildlife species from New York state. The refuge has a variety of habitats, including wetland, grassland, and forest that are perfect for waterfowl and local birds such as raptors, warblers, woodpeckers, and more!

USA Toronto to New York Drive - Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Montezuma offers a 3-mile auto-drive tour with designated stopping points that are perfect to view wildlife and take photographs. The Wildlife Refuge is also a great place to stop for a picnic lunch or get some exercise on the Seneca Trail, which takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

This mountain resort is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York and is the perfect halfway point for families as it is located approximately four hours from Toronto and New York City. There’s no wonder why this is one of the most popular family lake vacation destinations in the northeast.

Greek Peak offers a ski and tubing hill in the winter with nine lanes of tubing and fifty-one ski runs. In the summer, it transforms into an outdoor playground for families and offers exhilarating family attractions like a mountain roller coaster, zipline, mountain biking, and aerial courses.

Canada Toronto to New York Drive – Greek Peak Mountain Resort, new york

You may choose to simply stay overnight, or maybe you will spend a day and enjoy the Cascades Indoor Waterpark , which is 84 degrees all year long and offers a wave pool and a variety of water slides for kids of all ages.

Kids will also want to stop at the Bearfoot Den, which is a kids’ zone offering crafts, games, and toys for kids to enjoy. The Den is open every weekend from Friday to Sunday and also offers other family activities like hiking, biking, and yoga for overnight guests.

Pro Tip : The resort also offers babysitting services for children over two years old, so parents can enjoy dinner without the kids!

The Perfect Halfway Stopping Point – Checkout Accommodation Options Around Greek Peak

Animal adventure park.

Home to over 300 animals of 150 different species, Animal Adventure Park is the perfect half-day excursion. The park focuses on offering up-close, hands-on animal encounters, as you can hand-feed many domestic and exotic animals during your visit.

During these up-close visits, guests will learn about conservation and all about the animal species for knowledge of zoo keepers during these zoo talks. If you don’t mind staying in your car, they also offer a drive-thru preserve option.

Opus 40 Sculpture Park, Saugerties

USA Toronto to New York Drive - Opus 40 Sculpture Park, Saugerties

This beautiful sculpture park has 60 acres of meadows and bluestone quarries in addition to the 6.5 acres of sculptures to view. Many consider this sculpture park to be the “Stonehenge of North America”, as the designer created natural pathways out of the abandoned quarry.

This park features beautifully landscaped areas to enjoy including fountains fed by quarry springs. Its the perfect place to time stop for stretching your legs

Pro Tip : The park is only open Thursday until Monday through Labor Day.

Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom

Taking the I-86 E route further to the west, you could make your penultimate stop at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Families of all ages will enjoy Dorney Park , which features more than 60 rides, shows, and attractions, including a waterpark.

Dorney Park is one of the largest waterparks in the North East that you don’t want to miss visiting. The amusement park is perfect for families with small children as it has over 15 rides in Planet Snoopy that even the youngest kids can ride and enjoy!

The Planet Snoopy area has lots of family amenities: nursing rooms, diaper changing areas, as well as a sensory and calming room. The waterpark is one of the best in the state as it has two tubing rivers, multiple wave pools, and twenty-six drenching waterslides – well worth the small detour!

New York Zipline

If you are looking for thrills, don’t forget to stop at Hunter Mountain to visit one of the highest and longest ziplines in North America. Experience the amazing views of the countryside as you are over 3200 ft above sea level on this scenic skyride, on the best things to do with active and adventurous kids.

USA Toronto to New York Drive - New York Zipline

From peak to peak, this zipline is 4.6 miles and can hit speeds up to 50 miles per hour. Participants must be over 10 years old and complete the Zipline Pilot training school before ziplining, so the whole tour lasts three to four hours.

An alternate family-friendly option is the Mid Mountain Tour which takes families on six shorter ziplines, multiple rope bridges, a rappel, and nine tree platforms. The tour takes 3 hours, and participants will be attached by a harness.

This is most definitely a spectacular way to finish your Toronto to NYC drive before you dive in to all the fun adventures that await in your final destination, the Big Apple!

More Tips For Road Tripping Toronto To New York

  • Drive the Speed Limit : Make sure you don’t speed on your road trip as there are tons of state troopers everywhere, and they are always looking for speeders.
  • Check road conditions in New York State before you set out using 511ny.org
  • To save on fuel costs, try to make it to the United States before your first gas fill up, as gas is often cheaper in the United States versus Canada.
  • Luckily, power sockets are the same in the US and Canada so no need to pack any adapters, but you will need to change currency from Canadian Dollar to US Dollar.
  • Do bring some lose change. There are a few tolls along the route so you will probably want to have about $20 USD in change to pay tolls.
