And then, of course, there’s the city’s art. Stroll through Rome, and you’ll stumble upon some of the greatest treasures the world has ever seen — an astonishing collection of frescoes, paintings, ceilings and fountains created by icons like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini.

After all that exploration, take advantage of ample opportunities to eat and drink, including at several Michelin-starred restaurants. Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

All eyes will be on Paris this year, as the city prepares to host the Summer Olympics. Following the reconstruction of Notre-Dame and this year's much-publicized battle with bedbugs , the City of Light is embracing the spirit of reinvention. That means playful design hotel openings , Dominique Crenn’s first restaurant in her home country, renewed efforts to clean up the Seine (with the goal of making it swimmable, no less), and a slew of French Asian artisans and chefs shaking up the cultural scene. Well beyond the confines of the capital, there are new adventures to discover, from the low-key surf scene in Hossegor to a buzzy African-inspired restaurant in Nîmes to a wave of modernist-tinged openings in the perma-chic French Riviera . And much, much farther afield, the overseas territory of French Polynesia made our list of the 24 best places to go in 2024 . The 118-island archipelago, which is reinvesting in its native flora and restoring coral, will play host to the Olympic surfing competitions this year.

Sri Lanka

19. Sri Lanka

This South Asian nation packs a wallop into a single teardrop-shaped island only slightly larger than the state of West Virginia: Think high-elevation tea plantations that are eye-vibratingly green, national parks where sloth bears and endangered elephants roam, and friendly surf towns that, if you squint, might remind you of Costa Rica or Nicaragua some decades years ago. (May we suggest Ahangama , with its indie-music venues, locavore cafés, and eco-boutiques?) And then there’s the capital city of Colombo , where you can shop for local spices, fly kites along the waterfront, or even charter a yacht. As Sri Lanka has worked in recent years to secure its spot as a global tourism contender, it has faced quite a few challenges, from the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings to the pandemic. Now, it’s looking to regain the trust of visitors with its trademark hospitality and warm nature—not to mention an ever-expanding roster of new hotels and resorts .

18. Austria

Vienna has long been a favorite stop on European grand tours, but despite the city’s Hapsburg-era pomp and splendor, it’s far from a dusty museum piece. Leaders recently announced plans to be carbon neutral by 2040, led by a hyperlocal culinary scene that has welcomed such innovations as a city snail farm and an urban collective that uses grounds from the city’s famed coffee house scene to grow mushrooms. Outside the capital, visitors still flock to alpine ski villages and jewel-box-like Salzburg , but other destinations are bubbling to the surface. Making our Hot List recently is The Cōmodo , an artfully repurposed 1960s health resort on the edge of the country’s largest national park in the mountain village of Bad Gastein. And, this year, the country celebrated its third European Capital of Culture—following Graz in 2003 and Linz in 2009—the spa town of Bad Ischl, where the healing salt waters have been attracting royalty and other elites since the early 1800s.

17. South Africa

South Africa has always been a favorite first stop on the continent for international travelers, and it’s becoming increasingly accessible thanks to new direct routes. But even if you’ve visited before, you might not recognize the place: Joining the illustrious ranks of the country’s famed safari resorts and wineries are a slew of new openings , including a revitalized weekend market in Johannesburg and buzzy beach clubs in the heart of Cape Town. Beyond the wildlife watching that has made South Africa a favorite destination for generations of safari goers, new adventures await around every corner: Take lessons with the country’s first Black African free-diving instructor, the mermaid-esque Zandile Ndhlovu ; retrace Viola Davis’s footsteps in the filming locations from The Woman King (South Africa stood in for the former West African Kingdom of Dahomey); or collaborate on your own bespoke African-print bomber jacket with local Joburg fashion designer Sebo Marobela .

16. United Kingdom

Thanks to Brexit and a new monarch, it’s safe to say that the United Kingdom hasn’t seen such an intense period of transition since perhaps the Margaret Thatcher era. But despite the changes, most of the things we all know and love about the country are still intact, such as London’s dazzlingly diverse restaurant scene and its wide array of free museums (the National Portrait Gallery reopened its doors last summer after a three-year renovation). History is always being reimagined and remixed in these parts: Take, for instance, the landmark Old War Office, which has been transformed into Raffles London at The OWO , or the renovated 1511 Thornbury Castle , where you can now make like a Tudor-era noble and book an overnight stay. Up in the north of England, Yorkshire made it onto our list of the best places to go in 2024, thanks to its emerging culinary scene, and adventures await beyond the borders of England as well—foraging for mushrooms in Wales , tapping into maritime history in Northern Ireland , or hopping between swimmable tidal pools on the coast of Scotland .

15. Germany

With its fairytale castles , charming small towns , and festive Christmas markets , Germany has always loomed large as a tourist magnet, whether you’re exploring it by train, river cruise, or road trip . While the country may seem tradition-bound, it’s also not afraid of trying something new, which might mean immersive art shows taking over unexpected spaces in Berlin or a $120 million, high-tech medi-spa opening in the pastoral North Frisian Islands. There are new contemporary-art-filled places to stay , buzzy neighborhoods (like Munich’s meatpacking district, Schlachthofviertel ), and even an expanding fleet of ultra-eco-friendly, hydrogen-powered passenger trains that emit only steam and condensed water. Of course, the classics are just as beautiful as they’ve always been: When, for instance, you enjoy the healing thermal springs of Baden-Baden , you’re taking part in a millennia-old tourist tradition that dates back to the pre-Roman Celts.

14. Croatia

The secret’s out: This Balkan country may have been off-the-beaten path a decade or so ago, but it’s rapidly gaining in popularity, thanks to increased direct flights, an influx of cruises, and especially the popularity of Game of Thrones . Croatia is feeling the growing pains of its success, with spots like Dubrovnik and Split becoming every bit as overtouristed as Venice or Amsterdam, but there are plenty of areas around the country that reward exploration: dining at family-farm restaurants and sampling local olive oil in Istria , zipping around by speedboat off the coastline of Trogir , road-tripping through vineyards and oyster farms on the Dalmatian Coast , or sailing among the restful Kornati Islands , which are dotted with oak forests, centuries-old churches, and fortified villages. The result? What local Dalmatians call fjaka —that sweet feeling of doing absolutely nothing.

13. Iceland

Long celebrated as a rugged adventure outpost, Iceland is the kind of edge-of-the-world place where your trip just might be interrupted or postponed by a volcanic eruption or mini-earthquakes—but is worth the wait. These days, urban life is just as alive and exciting as the geothermal activity bubbling underground: Think pilgrimage-worthy restaurants (like Ox , a speakeasy-style tasting-menu spot), see-and-be-seen design hotels ( The Reykjavík Edition ), and a robust roster of new natural wine bars, cocktail lounges, and innovative food halls.

As the Golden Circle becomes increasingly crowded with international visitors taking advantage of IcelandAir’s “stopover” program , the country is gently nudging travelers off the beaten path. The relatively new Diamond Circle , for instance, weaves a 155-mile loop through northeastern Iceland, stopping at waterfalls, mud pits, lava caves, and hot springs. And in 2023, the fan-favorite Blue Lagoon —which boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant of its own, Moss —expanded its footprint with the new Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll , a cozy retreat in a part of the country’s rugged interior that’s so remote even many Icelanders haven’t stepped foot there.

Sydney

12. Australia

We’ll never stop loving Sydney and Melbourne and the Great Barrier Reef , but the overarching theme for Aussie tourism in the past few years has been a resounding: “But there’s so much more out there!” There’s almost a passing of the baton going on among the country’s creative-minded cities: Way out west, Perth enjoyed its status as the country’s fast-growing boomtown, followed by Hobart, Tasmania , which welcomed a game-changing art museum and design hotel . Ready for its big close-up is Queensland’s oft-ignored capital city of Brisbane , which is newly accessible thanks to direct routes from the United States and will see such skyline-transforming additions as the Queen’s Wharf entertainment precinct (with a six-star Rosewood) and a $100-million performing arts venue. And when the first World’s 50 Best Hotels list was released back in September, Brisbane’s modernist-tinged The Calile ranked the highest in the region. On the exact opposite side of the country, Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region made our list of the world’s best places to go in 2024 , thanks to increased cruise itineraries to the area and the newly launched Aboriginal Cultural Expedition.

Istanbul has always sat at the crossroads of the world, where the thin ribbon of the Bosphorus divides Asia from Europe, and East from West. It's taken its position to new heights with a game-changing international airport that opened in 2019 and gained fandom among our readers for its modern design and impressive duty-free shopping zone. Returning visitors will find all the things they love about Istanbul still intact, from its minaret-filled skyline to its thrilling food scene , but there are plenty of fresh offerings, including a burgeoning contemporary gallery scene in artsy Karaköy . Farther afield, the Turquoise Coast attracts jet setters with its traditional hammams and party-centric resorts alike, while the surrounding Aegean region has seen an explosion of modern wineries amid its ancient ruins. And speaking of antiquity, there’s a brand new (yet very old) reason to head out east into Anatolia: In 2021, UNESCO inscribed the 8,000-year-old Arslantepe Mound on its list of World Heritage Sites.

10. Switzerland

With its cow-studded green valleys, snow-capped peaks, and glitzy ski resorts, Switzerland is the kind of place that most people think they know. But this country in the heart of Europe is worth another look. Take, for instance, its notoriously expensive largest city, Zürich , which never seems to get enough credit for its progressive outlook , oft-overlooked art and music scenes , and a skyline shaped by staggeringly diverse architectural voices, including Le Corbusier, Santiago Calatrava, and Shigeru Ban. Its Alpine ski towns, with big names like Verbier, Davos, and Zermatt, meanwhile, are expanding their offerings beyond the snow season: The Engadin Valley , home to St. Moritz, has become a warm-weather hot spot, with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, electric mountain bikes for rent, and all manner of adventure sports, including paragliding, kitesurfing, and even class-4 whitewater-rapids rafting through Giarsun Gorge. But, of course, the classics still sing. After tackling the country’s rugged terrain, you’ve earned a stay in the new Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern , a stunningly remade Belle Epoque grande-dame hotel originally opened in 1906.

Oslo has spent the past several years getting out of the shadow of its grander Scandinavian peers, like Stockholm and Copenhagen, with attention-grabbing openings like the Sommerro hotel and the new National Museum and buzzy districts like harbor-side Bjørvika , home to the new Munch Museum. But the capital city is a mere gateway for exploring the country and its fjord-filled coastline—recently recalculated as the second-longest in the world after Canada. This year, a must-visit stop is Bodø , the first European Capital of Culture north of the Arctic Circle, which will see a lineup of cultural events celebrating Sámi culture and the opening of a new hotel made almost entirely out of wood. For the best way to get around these parts, you can’t beat Hurtigruten , a historic coastal ferry company that also doubles as a pleasure cruise line, a cargo vessel, a mail ship, and an expedition outfitter. The beloved institution celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2023 by partnering with renowned Norwegian chefs like Halvar Ellingsen for boundary-pushing onboard menus (think reindeer tartar and elk bone marrow) and introducing new itineraries to Svalbard and the North Cape.

With a war between Israel and Hamas plunging the area into chaos and uncertainty, the region looks quite different than it did during the Readers’ Choice Awards voting process—and depending on where you're traveling, may need to be avoided until the situation on the ground changes. But before the latest conflict, Israel had been attracting travelers by investing in future developments while keeping an eye firmly on its past: Archaeologists, for instance, recently uncovered a 2,000-year-old synagogue in the ancient city of Migdal,; Tel Ashkelon, the largest Roman-era basilica in the Middle East, has also been undergoing restoration. In Jerusalem , a vibrant dining scene emerged, including in the winding alleyways of Machane Yehuda Market, while Bauhaus-rich Tel Aviv has added a slew of new hotel properties to its design-forward repertoire. As experts recently told readers in our update on the region , it’s best to postpone trips, not cancel them: “Do not give up on visiting Israel,” said Susan Weissberg from Wyllys Professional Travel. “It is the most fascinating country in the world, no matter what your religion is, and this too shall pass.”

7. Portugal

This Iberian Peninsula country has spent the past decade transforming from a budget-minded underdog destination to a major player that can rival the likes of Spain and Italy. From the start, even as it suffered under a forty-year authoritarian regime and a flailing economy, Portugal was brimming with delights that bordered on sensory overload: the intricate blue-and-white patterns of azulejo tiles, the intoxicating aroma of oven-fresh pastéis de nata, the mournful chords of live fado music , the bracing chill of a crisp vinho verde or the nectary sweetness of a port. With its jaunty yellow trams and hilltop São Jorge Castle, Lisbon is an easy-to-adore starting point for first-timers, but an increasing number of direct flights to Porto are inviting travelers to explore the second city’s contemporary cultural scene and must-try restaurants . And then? Portugal rewards repeat visitors with a choose-your-own-adventure that might include the terraced hillsides of the Douro Valley, the underrated wineries and burgeoning beach towns of the Alentejo region , the surfer havens of the Algarve , and the absurdly scenic hamlets scattered throughout. Now, thanks to new direct flights from the U.S., even the Hawaii-like volcanic landscapes of the Azores are right at your fingertips.

When the World’s 50 Best Bars list was announced earlier this year, the top spot went to an innovative Barcelona cocktail lounge called Sips , and it shared the top five with fellow Barcelona speakeasy Paradiso , which is hidden inside a pastrami shop in the trendy El Born district. If you’ve spent any time in the country, especially after nightfall, you probably already know this obvious fact: The Spanish know how to party, and they love to do it in style, from the sherry and flamenco bars of Andalusia to the beach clubs of bohemian Formentera to the tapas bars of Barcelona . In an ironic twist, some of the country’s most notoriously party-hardy spots are moving in the opposite direction, shedding their reputations for debauchery to become serious cultural hubs. A new generation of creatives in Mallorca , for instance, are getting back to the land, with homey design hotels and natural wineries, while a host of boutique hotels and Michelin-star restaurants in Marbella is enticing visitors to explore beyond the (admittedly gorgeous) beachfront and into the previously underrated Old Town.

5. New Zealand

Ever since Peter Jackson cast his home country as Middle-earth in the Lord of the Rings film franchise, visitors have viewed this island nation as a place of almost mythical beauty, from the crystalline mountains lakes and sweeping fjords to misty rainforests and geothermal valleys. Culturally diverse Auckland remains the most popular point of entry for international travelers, but new lodges and trails are making it easier than ever before to venture far out into the country’s vast wilderness. Among the most dazzling openings in recent years is Flockhill Lodge , a 36,000-acre high-country sheep station in the Southern Alps that now doubles as an ultra-luxe retreat, while other properties are finding clever ways to honor the land (such as regenerative farming ) and especially the country’s Māori heritage. And for something wildly unique, consider a flight on the world’s first winery airline, Invivo Air , which flies between Auckland and Queenstown and includes an eight-step wine tasting at 18,000 feet.

For American travelers, Ireland has always felt a bit like an old cardigan: cozy, easy, and comfortable—the kind of place you can take multiple generations of family members to trace your genealogical roots or to scope out centuries-old castles and fireplace-warmed pubs. But there’s also a decidedly youthful wind whipping across the Emerald Isle . The capital city is emerging as one of Europe’s most forward-thinking tech hubs, nicknamed Silicon Docks for the prevalence of tech giants and startups headquartered along the Grand Canal Dock. This infusion of big thinkers (with big wallets) has blown the dust off the island’s traditionalist culture. Now, in addition to crossing Trinity College’s Long Room off your bucket list, you might also find yourself foraging for nettles and pears with Takingaleaf founder Miceal Murray or sipping whiskey at Teeling, the first new distillery to open within the city in more than 125 years. Beyond the capital, Ireland is dotted with remote hotels and Airbnbs that allow you to spend the night everywhere from an island lighthouse in County May to a Scandi-chic cabin in County Monaghan. And if you’re in the mood for something farther afield, it doesn’t get much more rugged than the Aran Islands, the filming location and inspiration for The Banshees of Inisherin .

Greece is attracting record-breaking tourist numbers, and the crystal Aegean waters are beckoning us back to some of your favorite islands in the world: postcard-perfect Santorini , mythology-steeped Mykonos , and massive Crete , with its reemerging viticultural scene. That roster of dreamy islands is ever-expanding, with more and more visitors venturing out to under-the-radar Paros , car-free Hydra , blissfully secluded Zakynthos , beach-filled Ios , and wild, windswept Tinos . And be sure not to ignore Athens . As it rebuilt itself after a paralyzing debt crisis, the ancient city leaned into a scrappy, creative energy that has yielded forward-thinking restaurants, avant-garde galleries, and hip hotels that rank Athens among Europe’s unexpectedly coolest capitals. And for those really looking for an adventure—albeit a slow one—consider a journey into Zagorohoria , a collection of 46 traditional stone villages scattered around the Pindus Mountains in Greece’s rugged northwest. Here, you’re likelier to encounter truffle hunters, bubbling hot springs, and monasteries with Orthodox frescoes than sun-seeking partiers.

As Stanley Tucci’s popular CNN travelogue proved, there aren’t enough days in the year to uncover all the dolce vita that Italy has to offer. Beyond the hotspots in Florence , Venice , Milan , and Rome , the country is blessed with seemingly infinite villages and underrated cities to explore and fall in love with. Palermo’s stunningly restored Villa Igiea , for instance, brought the glitterati back to Sicily , which is still riding high off its role in HBO’s The White Lotus , while Bergamo and Brescia —two former rivals who were epicenters of the early pandemic—put aside their differences to jointly hold the title of 2023 Italian Capital of Culture. Of course, one of Italy’s enduring legacies is its world-renowned cuisine, which the government has officially nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. And you don’t have to look far to see what all the fuss is about: Italy is a food lover’s paradise, where you can immerse yourself in the millennia-old Jewish cuisine of Rome, take part in a transformative cooking class in Tuscany , or try something completely new-to-you (like torta al testo ) in landlocked Umbria .

Japan was dealt a bad hand, when its turn at the Summer Olympics fell during an international pandemic. And though they were much-delayed, the Games reminded viewers worldwide what they loved—and missed—about the island nation: the traditions, the design culture, the futuristic innovation. Now that the country has reopened for visa-free tourism, you’ll still find the incredible restaurants , the ultra-relaxing onsens , the Shinto temples, the cherry blossoms, and the impeccably clean and efficient high-speed trains , which run along some of the most scenic rail routes in the world. But there’s always something new popping up in this whizz-bang nation of the future. A buzzy gin scene ? Sure. A hilltop castle from 1599 where you can book overnight stays? Check. Oh yeah, and new galleries and exhibits on Naoshima Island , ultra-stylish glamping resorts , and a growing roster of sushi bars helmed by female chefs —still a major rarity in this tradition-bound country. And now there are fantastic excuses to venture far out to the country’s extreme north and south: New UNESCO World Heritage designees include the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in the north and a chain of islands in the archipelago’s southwestern stretches that are entirely uninhabited by humans and filled with endangered species.

Written by Amanda Finn

Whether you travel out of curiosity or to unwind, the world has thousands of locales. From sandy beaches and national parks to great monuments and ancient cities, it all comes down to where you want to explore.

It’s impossible to say that one location is the best tourist destination in the world. Who’s to say which tourist attractions are the best places to visit? My favorite art galleries might not hold a candle to your favorite hiking trails and vice versa.

That said, we can easily showcase parts of the world-renowned world to draw tourists in from all over the world. So here are some of the top tourist destinations in the world to consider for your next vacation.

TL;DR: Places by Continent

Best tourist destinations in the world to visit, 1. paris, france.

Exterior of Sacre-Couer Bascilica in Paris

Popularly known for the Eiffel Tower, the City of Light is a favorite to many. Unsurprisingly, it is also among the world’s best tourist destinations. The magnificent  Eiffel Tower is a tourist attraction, making Paris a top-of-mind for romantics. However, that’s not all you get to experience.

There is the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre for the history buffs. Wander along the cobblestone streets of Paris’ city center to find some of the best cuisines and breathtaking art. From beautiful museums, art galleries, and old churches to the natural beauty of trees along the River Seine.

Among the best things to do in Paris is to  join the River Seine cruise . You can see some of the city’s most iconic views from the river, including that of Notre-Dame, Ile de la Cité, and even (yes!) the Eiffel Tower .

The city is also famous for shopping, especially brand-name clothes, designer bags, and luxury accessories. The perfect time to visit the city is between June and August, but be mindful that some of the area’s attractions, like Versailles, are not air-conditioned, so they can be quite uncomfortable.

2. London, United Kingdom

Best Tourist Destinations, London, England

London is a world-class city ; you will never want to leave once you enter this beautiful city. As famed writer Samuel Johnson said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is all that life can afford in London.”

Thanks, in part, to its famous museums, London is the epitome of a historical archive. From the infamous Tower of London to The Churchill War Rooms, The British Museum, The National Gallery, and Tower Bridge, you can learn much about the United Kingdom and the world.

London is home to the Royal Family residence, the magnificent Buckingham Palace, which you can visit during certain times of the year. Not to mention the nearby West End, known worldwide for its incredible performing arts and theatrical offerings.

London is also known for its eccentric nightlife, thanks to the many pubs and bars along the streets of this lively city. Be sure to enjoy a cuppa, cuisines from all over the world, cute cafes, and picnic sites. There is so much in London beyond the famed bridge and Big Ben — contrary to what Peter Pan had us believe.

3. Great Barrier Reef, Australia

A turtle swimming in the Great Barrier Reef with snorkelers swimming above

The Great Barrier Reef  is the world’s largest and most complex coral reef system, stretching over 1,400 miles from shallow waters to deep oceans.

Given its natural beauty, it’s clear why the reefs are among the world’s best places to visit. It’s located off the east coast of Queensland, Australia, extending into the Pacific Ocean from the north of Cape York to the south of Bundaberg.

Its vast expanse hosts tons of golden beaches, 900 islands, over 2,900 individual reefs, and thousands of incredibly diverse species, hence its complexity. Although the reef faces danger and death from environmental changes, the reef is still a  beautiful place  to visit.

Besides learning about the ecosystem,  scuba diving  or snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute dream. You can see many different kinds of animals and plant life, especially if you can see different areas of the reef system.

On-land attractions in Australia but near the reef include the  Kuranda Scenic Railway  and the  Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas . This place is a treasure to visit.

Although many people prefer visiting this world wonder in the summer, the temperatures are also comfortable during winter — especially if you’re used to cold climates.

The Eternal City is a significant destination for travelers far and wide as it houses several emblematic monuments thanks to the ancient Roman Empire. It is the capital of  Italy  and the Lazio region.

It is famous for its historic and ancient structures, which makes the city’s view incredibly magical. The city’s various attractions include the  Vatican City  and the Colosseum, famous for their extensive histories, as well as world-class museums.

The most famous site in the city has to be the  Colosseum . Being one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is rightly one of the most iconic sites in Rome. It has survived several earthquakes, modern pollution, and the fall of the great Roman Empire.

The Pantheon is about 2,000 years old and is among Rome’s best places to visit . To see the beauty of the Pantheon and get the most out of the experience, we recommended  joining a guided tour .

Other places include the Galleria Borghese, a haven for art lovers, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Piazza Navona. Buying a combo pass with a guided tour and transport directly through these UNESCO World Heritage Sites is best.

New York , famously known as the city that never sleeps, is more of an experience than a tourist destination. It is one of the world’s foremost financial, commercial, and cultural centers. It offers world-class art, performing arts, and breathtaking city views, in addition to the lush greenery of Central Park.

Walk down to Chinatown or Little Italy for the ultimate food tour . Or, if you’ve got an eye for designers and the latest fashion trends, Fifth Avenue is your go-to.

The city’s other best tourist attractions include Broadway, the New York Public Library, Times Square, the Empire State Building, and the Museum of Modern Art.

7. Barcelona, Spain

Park Güell Barcelona mosaic bench and architecture

Although Barcelona is partly known for its Mediterranean landscapes, the city provides an infinite choice of impressive buildings, incredible cuisine,  beautiful beaches , and entertaining nightlife to explore.

Antoni Gaudi’s name is all over Barcelona’s monumental buildings, and the most famous is the  La Sagrada Familia . It is the tallest church in the world and nothing like any religious structure you’ve seen before, making it one of the best places to visit in Spain during your Barcelona adventure.

It has also never been completed, and work has been nearly continuous since Gaudi began in 1882. It didn’t even open until 2010. The  Casa Balto  is another of Antoni’s unique creations. Although he didn’t build it from scratch, he renovated it in the 20th century.

Casa Mila is another of Gaudi’s masterpieces that stands out. Although it was designed as a residential building, it is among the many modernist works listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Head down the La Boqueria, a beloved pedestrian market, to wind down. For food shopping, you’ll find anything you need: fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, meat, cheese, and cold beer in the surrounding pubs.

Washington, DC at the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial during spring

The capital city of the United States of America,  Washington, D.C ., is famous for its well-governed culture, various monuments like the Lincoln Memorial, which honors President Abraham Lincoln, and museums like the National Portrait Gallery.

The nation’s capital is also filled with a fantastic ambiance due to the famous cafes, boutique shops, restaurants, and clubs. You’ll also find the Smithsonian Institution, the country’s first national zoological park, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

While the city is known for having political roots, there are many  tourist attractions in Washington, D.C . The White House is among the Neoclassical monuments defining Washington and the city’s top traveling destinations. The White House has housed the Presidents of the United States since the 18th century.

A tour to the White House is possible if arranged through congress members, and foreigners have to contact their embassy in Washington to help organize the tour.

The National Mall is another must-stop  location in Washington, D.C . It holds some of the United States’ most important monuments, such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Washington Monument.

Critical events have been hosted along the National Mall, including civil rights movements and presidential inaugurations.

We recommend joining a monument tour to see Washington’s notable historic attractions . Entrance to the National Mall and most memorials around D.C. are free. There are also many free tours around the National Mall or D.C. at large.

Deep in the Andes Mountains in Peru , the lost city of Machu Picchu is the most visited destination in the country. Built around 1450 AD, this incredible artifact of the Incan Empire remains one of the foremost ancient sites in the world, making it an ultimate bucket list spot for those who love history and the great outdoors.

This may be one of the best places to visit, but it’s also among the most difficult. The bravest Machu Picchu travelers must hike along the Inca Trail, which takes four days and three nights to finally reach the ancient city.

Still, if you’re up for the incredible challenge, the best time to visit is June through August. But don’t worry; you don’t have to endure the hike to see the city.

You can take a short train ride from Lima to Aguas Calientes. From there, you can take a bus to the bridge just ahead of the ruins’ box office.

You won’t get the experience of trekking the trail if you take the train, but you’ll have more days to enjoy other parts of Peru. Maybe next time?

22. Grand Canyon, Arizona

Sunrise at the Grand Canyon

It should come as no surprise that one of the natural wonders of the world made this list of the best places to visit. The Grand Canyon , etched into the Earth, is one of the most visited natural places in the United States.

Not only is it home to hiking adventures into the canyon, but it’s also where you can enjoy whitewater rafting. Thanks to the mighty Colorado River, which runs through parts of the canyon, incredible water activities can be found here.

The canyon is over 277 miles long, so seeing it all on foot is impossible. You can take a helicopter or railway tour to experience more of Grand Canyon National Park. From these starkly different points of view, visitors can see vistas they’d never see on the back of a horse or donkey or by hiking.

Several other incredible Arizona natural attractions , such as Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, are nearby.

23. Niagara Falls, New York

A view of Niagara Falls with mist floating up around the waterfalls

Technically, Niagara Falls is the name of a city in Ontario, Canada, as well as New York, and comprises two different waterfalls on the Niagara River. One is in the United States, American Falls, and the other is in Canada, Horseshoe Falls.

Since the waterfalls create so much mist, summer is the best time to visit. Because of the massive water sources, the air feels cooler than it might elsewhere.

Experts believe that the falls are roughly 12,000 years old. They formed when glaciers melted, creating some of the Midwest’s Great Lakes. Visitors love the falls so much because the constant flow of water combined with the height of the falls makes them such a beautiful sight.

Some tours take you down or behind the falls from a safe distance. Whether you take these or the boat tours into the river, you’ll definitely want to bring a raincoat or poncho because you will be getting wet.

Remember that you need your passport if you plan to walk onto the Canadian side from the United States — that wasn’t always the case.

24. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas Strip at nighttime

One of the foremost entertainment destinations on Earth, Las Vegas ‘ iconic Strip is known worldwide. The shimmering lights and marquees of Vegas make visitors think of showbiz. There is so much to do in Vegas, full of performances, gambling havens, shopping, and eateries.

Seeing the city at night is probably the most familiar thing tourists can do. Like Times Square in New York City, Vegas is defined by its bright lights, mainly from iconic Las Vegas hotels . Not to mention the Bellagio Fountain and other outdoor shows you can see for free each night up and down the Strip.

You can check out the Eiffel Tower Experience at the Paris hotel, see the famous Graceland Wedding Chapel , and meet your fair share of Elvis impersonators all around the city. Don’t forget to go to Downtown Las Vegas or Fremont Street to taste old Vegas.

If you get tired of the panache of Sin City, it’s easy to get out of the city. In a matter of hours, you can be amongst some of the incredible beauty of the desert, like The Grand Canyon or Antelope Canyon .

25. Taj Mahal, India

Pool intron of Taj Mahal

A symbol of love known worldwide, the Taj Mahal is believed to be one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indo-Islamic architecture. Building the palace was a feat as it took 20 years, 20,000 workers, and 1,000 elephants to complete.

It was built between 1632 and 1653 and would have cost at least $1 billion to build today with inflation. Emperor Shah Jahan built the palace as a final resting place over the grave of his beloved Mumtaz Mahal.

This iconic landmark is visited by millions of tourists each year. You can visit just the outside as well as the gardens or go inside the mausoleum as well. The entire building is a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal and Emperor Shah Jahan.

Given the significance of this site , it should come as no surprise that there is a dress code in place. Try to wear long sleeves and pants, or women can wear saris, but it’s generally advised not to show your arms, legs, shoulders, or cleavage at the site.

26. Queenstown, New Zealand

The skyline of Queenstown at dusk

Putting all of New Zealand on this list would be so easy. If you’ve ever been, you know this country is beyond anyone’s wildest dreams in nature’s beauty. That’s probably what Queenstown is best known for. Beside Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by mountains, Queenstown is postcard-perfect.

Naturalists and adventurers will both find their bliss here. Queenstown is home to the world’s first and most famous bungy jump. The Kawarau Bridge Bungy drops visitors off the bridge for 141 feet. You can also enjoy boating and whitewater rapids near here as well.

The best time to visit is during summer in the Southern hemisphere, between December and April. Especially if you plan on spending most of your time here enjoying the outdoors, you’ll want to visit during the warm months.

You cannot visit Queenstown without making the day trip excursion to Fiordland National Park. This three-hour journey sounds intimidating, but you’ll be glad you made the trip.

Not only is it one of the world’s most beautiful places, but Fiordland is also home to some of the best walking and hiking trails in New Zealand — namely the Kepler, Milford, and Routeburn trails. Plus, it’s home to Milford Sound, a fiord Rudyard Kipling called the Eighth Wonder of the World.

27. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Temples at Mike Fuchslocher

This ancient temple is one of the most famous places in Cambodia. Its signature lotus-shaped towers are known all over the world even if people don’t know the temple is called Angkor Wat . It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Angkor Wat is considered one of the most vital archaeological sites in Asia. It is partly because it contains some of the most significant remains from the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th centuries. It is believed to have been built during the 12th century.

While there are many temples in the world, Angkor Wat is special. Namely, it’s special because it was built at the request of Suryavarman II, a king, and serves as his tomb. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, and the walls depict stories from the Ramayana and Suryavarman’s life.

There are no sites like it on Earth. Angkor Wat is a one-of-a-kind location, which is why so many people venture to Cambodia to visit it every year.

28. Orlando, Florida

The Manta Ray Coaster at SeaWorld in Orlando

It may seem like an odd inclusion, but Orlando is one of the most visited places in the United States. That is mostly because it is home to some of the biggest theme parks in the world.

From SeaWorld to Universal Studios and the four theme parks in the Walt Disney World Resort , Orlando has so much to do it’s almost dizzying.

And that doesn’t even include ICON Park or Fun Spot parks, either! If you’re not big into theme parks, Disney Springs is a fun spot to get the Disney experience without all the thrills.

Not far from Orlando, you can also pay a visit to Kennedy Space Center . This world-class destination specializes in space exploration and science, making it the perfect stop for space explorers of all ages.

Plus, Orlando has easy access to nearby mangroves and the Everglades. That means a day out in nature is within reach, even from the Most Magical Place on Earth . You’ll need a day to recoup away from Mickey and his pals.

What are the top tourist destinations in the world?

Some of the top tourist destinations in the world include London, Paris, Tokyo, New York City, and Sydney. These cities stand out because of their cultural locations, landmarks, museums, and entertainment offerings.

What are some off-the-beaten-path destinations to consider?

Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia and Queenstown in New Zealand are places not often mentioned nearly enough, given their sheer beauty and historical significance. Both are remarkable places to see for vastly different reasons.

How do I decide where to go with limited time and budget?

Your best bet for making the best use of your budget is to consider how much food costs. For the most part, even very expensive cities have some reasonable hostel or low-cost hotel options, but food costs can blow a hole through even the most thorough budget.

As for time, consider how long it will take to commute to the points of interest you want to see. For Machu Picchu, for example, if you plan to hike there, you will spend most of your trip on that hiking excursion.

What are some must-see attractions that shouldn’t be missed?

The Duomo in Florence, the Louvre in Paris, the cherry blossoms and temples in Tokyo, and the Sydney Opera House in Sydney are some of the attractions you will never forget.

Gondolas and the Santa Maria della Salute Cathedral

There's something magical about Venice. Between the intricate canal system, beautiful stone bridges, and harmonious singing of the gondoliers, there's a unique vibe in this Italian city that can't be found elsewhere.

A boat ride along the aptly named Grand Canal rewards visitors with an intimate look at the highlights of Venetian architecture lining its banks — from historic churches to ornate palaces like the Doge's Palace (a.k.a. Palazzo Ducale), which you'll want to spend at least a couple of hours exploring.

Piazza San Marco is one of the main attractions in Venice and serves as a meeting place for locals, but mainly tourists. It's home to the famous and intricate St. Mark's Basilica , but it's so crowded (and filled with pigeons) that you won't get a true glimpse of the city's heart.

Perhaps the best way to tour Venice is by getting lost, which is easy to do. Only then will you stumble upon some of the local's favorite haunts, as well as the small, winding alleyways that present so much charm.

Bringing the family on your bucket list vacation? Great idea! Check out these top things to do in Venice with kids .

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The remarkable Angkor Wat is so vast, you'll need more than one (or even several) visits to see it all. This massive Hindu temple is surrounded by a large moat, adding to its impressive stature. Built in the 12 th century by the Khmers, this World Heritage Site serves as the veritable heart of Cambodia .

It's also the largest religious structure in the world and one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia . Set upon over 400 acres of land within a jungle, the temple was dedicated to the gods Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. Angkor Wat's main towers were created to symbolize the peaks of Mount Meru (a place Hindus believe to be home to the gods).

The best time to visit Angkor Wat is between December and February, when the temperature is comfortably in the 20s Celsius. Be warned, though, this is also the most popular time for tourists, so you'll have to elbow your way through the crowds.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Snorkeling Australia's Great Barrier Reef is one of the most incredible experiences you'll ever have. A magical underwater world welcomes adventurers to this incredible locale. Bursting with color and teeming with life, this impressive coral reef spans 2,300 kilometers from the tip of Queensland to the southern town of Bundaberg .

A World Heritage-listed area, the Great Barrier Reef is home to a rich ecosystem filled with everything from the smallest zooplankton to tropical fish to marine mammals like dugongs and dolphins.

A truly peaceful experience, swimming around the magical reef is a gift. Whether you choose to scuba dive or snorkel, you'll experience only the quiet sound of fish nibbling on coral as you roam about this vast marine playground, being constantly amazed by the beauty on display before you.

Sadly, global warming has been bleaching (and killing) large sections of this reef (especially in the north), so if you're planning to go, you should book a trip to this popular bucket list travel destination soon. And whatever you do, don't touch the coral.

There's a reason stores in Cinque Terre (a.k.a. "Five Towns") sell so many postcards — it's insanely gorgeous. 1. Explore the enigmatic ‘lost city’ of Petra

The treasured Unesco Heritage Site of Petra is the must-see ultimate experience on our list. Once nearly lost to the outside world, the sandstone city is now one of the most loved places on the planet, voted in as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World by popular ballot in 2007. Spread over some 102 sq miles (264 sq km), Petra was constructed by the ancient Nabataeans, a civilisation of crafters and merchants, and made for a grand trade route stop-off between Arabian oases. But generations later, after the city was abandoned, it was known only to the Bedouin who made the caves their home. The iconic Treasury, looming 128ft (39m) high is most visitors' first sight of the city, reached after a winding journey through a narrow water-etched slot canyon. Rediscover the city's eternal air of mystery in the early morning or the hours before closing when it's at its most atmospheric.

2. See the islands that changed the course of science - the Galápagos

A thousand kilometres from mainland South America, life on the Galápagos follows different rules. Cormorants can't fly. Iguanas can swim. Tortoises live nearly 200 years. The islands are famed, of course, as the place where Charles Darwin developed his ideas on evolution by natural selection. The process is more obvious here than elsewhere on Earth, since animals that otherwise look alike diverge subtly from island to island, depending on their environment. You'll find blue-footed boobies performing cartoonish mating dances, creeping colonies of iguanas, penguins zooming underwater, and fur seals lounging on volcanic rocks. Even 200 years after Darwin's journey on the HMS Beagle, visitors continue to be astonished by the archipelago's stunning diversity. Ecotourism is central to everything on the 17 islands of the Galápagos National Park - the airport is made from mostly recycled materials and runs on wind and solar power, and each municipality has a strict sustainability plan.

3. Take some life lessons from the Aṉangu at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

At sunset, when its wavy walls blaze gold, Uluru looks like a ship on fire in a desert sea. Rising to 1142ft (348m), the sandstone monolith seizes your eyes from miles away. It's easy to see why it's a sacred site. The Aṉangu people, the area's original inhabitants, believe it's still home to spirit ancestors like the python woman Kuniya and the hare-wallaby people, the Mala. But it's become an icon to all Australians, a symbolic heart beating in the country's Red Centre. Until 2017, visitors were allowed to summit Uluru, which went against the wishes of the Aṉangu, who worried about degradation and climber injuries. There are dozens of far more rewarding things to do - join a ranger-guided walk past sacred waterholes; spot kangaroos hopping through the spinifex; and learn about the Aṉangu at the cultural center, where there is a fantastic display on tjukurpa, the creation period.

4. Experience life in the slow lane on the Okavango Delta

AThis beautiful wilderness is one of Africa's most compelling safari destinations. Each year, the floodwaters of the Okavango River arrive from the Angolan highlands and expand this unique ecosystem to almost 7722 sq miles (20,000 sq km), sustaining vast quantities of wildlife. Along with 4WD safaris, visitors can explore by powerboat and traditional mokoro (dugout canoe). As the mokoro is poled silently through the shallow reed-lined channels you are immersed in the environment, hearing every bird and animal call, witnessing the mightiest of elephants crossing your path and the smallest of frogs clinging to the grass. With development and visitor numbers in the delta strictly regulated to protect the environment, the Okavango is one of the most exclusive destinations on the planet. But for adventurous souls who can handle a 4WD and don't mind camping, there are affordable options within the delta's Moremi Game Reserve.

5. Sniff out geysers and grizzlies at Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone stinks. And it has no manners at all. The rotten-egg whiff taunts your nostrils; your ears are assaulted by a vulgarity of belches, burps and farts. But then, what do you expect when you're exploring the largest geothermal area in the world? More than 500 active geysers spout in Yellowstone's enormous, steaming landscape - Old Faithful being the most famous. And there are hot springs to visit - from the bloodshot eyeball of Grand Prismatic to the travertine shelves at Mammoth. The wildlife is perhaps an even bigger draw. This is like North America's answer to an African safari, although here the Big Five creatures are bison, bighorn sheep, elk, bear and wolf. Watching shaggy bison warming up by a thermal pool, catching sight of a grizzly bear across a meadow, or visiting in winter to glimpse wolf prints in the snow - all are quintessential Yellowstone experiences.

6. Emulate a pilgrim's journey to astonishing Lake Bled

It started with the pilgrims from afar who came to worship at the photogenic island church, it continued with the lakeside sojourns of 19th-century royalty and then of former Yugoslav President Tito who had a villa on the shores - and today, tourism to Slovenia's Lake Bled shows no signs of slowing. This blue-green body of water with a white church on a green island, abutted by a terracotta-roofed castle and backed by snow-daubed Julian Alps, is Slovenia's premier crowd-puller. The lake measures just 1.2 by 0.9 miles (2km by 1.4km), so walking or cycling around it is an easy 4 miles (6km). Hire a pletna (gondola), dive beneath the glass-like surface and stay over in one of many beautiful shoreside properties. Slovenia has won praise for eco-initiatives like ecologically designed Garden Village Bled, where a stream snakes through a collection of tree houses and glamping tents.

7. Marvel at the astounding power of Iguazú Falls

Marking the boundary between Argentina and Brazil, the Río Iguazú flows languidly through the jungle before plunging over a basalt ledge with such sudden, furious force that the planet's most awe-inspiring waterfalls are the result. On the Argentinian side, a boardwalk leads through jungle vegetation replete with butterflies and squawking parrots, passing a series of increasingly impressive falls until finally the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) comes into view. A visit is a jaw-dropping, visceral experience, and the power and noise of the cascades - a chain of hundreds of waterfalls nearly 2 miles (3km) in extension - live forever in the memory. Sunlight shines through the spray, creating multiple rainbows as the falling water ricochets up off the river below. The exhilarating cool mist, the high decibel roar and the thundering vibrations of crashing water remind you in no uncertain terms of the power and splendor of nature.

8. Find Hindu heaven at the temples of Angkor

A monument to human ingenuity and devotion, the temples of Angkor have an ability to inspire awe that rivals many of nature's contributions to this list's top 10. And so they should - Angkor Wat, the most famous of Angkor's sites, is a representation of Mt Meru, center of the universe and abode of Hindu gods. Imagine the wonderment of the ancient Khmer as they entered Angkor Wat for the first time: crossing the vast moat, peering up at the 180ft (55m) central tower, gazing at intricately carved bas-reliefs. Beyond Angkor Wat are more than 1000 temples and shrines, including Ta Prohm, its towers gripped by the jungle, and Bayon with its giant stone faces. The temples are the perfect fusion of creative ambition and spiritual devotion, and a point of pilgrimage for all Cambodians. Avoid the crowds with a visit in the wet season for (hopefully) that perfect Angkor sunrise.

9. Strike out on the salt of the earth at Salar de Uyuni

Imagine this: you're standing in the middle of the sky. Clouds above. Clouds below. Blue all around. That's what it's like at Salar de Uyuni, the world's biggest salt lake, after rain. The thin layer of water turns the utterly flat salt surface into a vast mirror. The horizon disappears and you seem to float. That's only one of the brain-bending experiences you'll have visiting these 4085 sq miles (10,582 sq km) of salt, high in the Bolivian altiplano. When the lake's dry, the white cracked immensity feels like a desolate, sun-scorched post-apocalyptic landscape. In the dry season you can visit the lake's two islands - Isla Incahuasi and Isla del Pescado - craggy husks of land sprouting with cacti. See too the geyser fields with boiling mud and sulfur steam. Several of the eerie high-altitude lakes, turned aquamarine from high mineral content, are home to flocks of flamingos.

10. Take a classic teahouse trek around Nepal's Annapurna Circuit

Nepal offers golden temples, charming hill villages, jungle wildlife watching, and the incredible walk around Nepal's Annapurna massif, which has long been considered one of the world's great treks. The scenery is mesmerising and the sense of journey is psychologically satisfying, starting in rice paddies and climbing through yak pastures before crossing the mighty snow-bound Thorung La pass. It's everything a good trek should be - challenging, majestic and inspirational. And at the end of the day some of Nepal's best lodges offer hot meals, apple pie and pots of milky tea. However, it's the side trips that make this a truly great trek, notably up to high-altitude Tilicho Lake or to the village of Ngawal, where terraces offer views of snowcapped peaks just across the valley. Build in a couple of extra days, shake off the crowds, and take your time - this is not scenery to rush through.

20 of the coolest travel adventures for 2024

From a horseback safari in Kenya to river rafting in West Virginia, here’s our ranked list of the top travel experiences right now.

This page is a portal.   No, really, it is: Our annual Best of the World feature is a gateway to the streets of Paris , the snowy Caucasus Mountains of Georgia , the ancient rock art of Algeria . To help us engage with places more deeply and meaningfully, we drew on National Geographic’s global community of experts to create the following ranked list of 20 great adventures for 2024. Read on and you’ll discover that this page is also a celebration—of travel’s power to transform us and our connections with one another.

#1: Go on horseback safari in Kenya

Guide Hamprey Mweterwa, and riders Llewellyn, Eloise and Tatiana Rose Dyer, watch a herd of zebra from atop their horses in Borana Conservancy, Kenya

A safari in Africa usually conjures an image of mud-spattered 4x4 vehicles bouncing through the bush. But there’s another way to travel: on horseback .

Although horse safaris originated in Kenya in the 1970s, they’re a perfect fit for today’s growing number of travelers looking for more engaging, sustainable wildlife encounters. At the 32,000-acre Borana Conservancy , two stables house thoroughbreds and ex-polo ponies for riders of all skill levels. Visitors can book half-day, full-day, or overnight rides. July through September is the prime time to go.

Since wildlife perceive equines as just another animal, exploring the landscape atop a horse makes for an intimate experience. “To journey on horseback is to break down the walls—meant to protect but also to separate—between oneself and the natural world,” says Nichole Sobecki , a photographer and equestrian who’s ridden in Borana. “Your horse is a translator, responding to the low growl of the lion, the soft scent of a herd of elephants.” A horse’s ears are an advance warning system, she says, helping knowledgeable guides navigate routes.

#2: Run an Olympic marathon in Paris

Silhouettes of runners pass in front of the Eiffel Tower during the 45th edition of the Paris Marathon

For the first time, members of the public will be able to run their own marathon during the 2024 Summer Olympics , in Paris, France , just one initiative aimed at creating a more inclusive Games.

Slated to be held the evening of August 10, between the men’s and women’s official races, the Marathon for All will allow 20,024 qualifying lottery winners on the 26.2-mile route that links Paris and Versailles , a loop beginning at the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and passing through nine arrondissements before finishing at Les Invalides on the banks of the Seine. Before or after the big event, learn the route to follow in their tracks.

#3: Ski tour UNESCO sites in Georgia

Long a means of transportation, exploration, and hunting, skiing is still a way of life in the mountainous republic of Georgia. Now visitors can enjoy some of the nation’s best backcountry skiing in the Caucasus with the help of outfitters such as Svaneti Ski and Georgia Ski Touring . In Svaneti, excursions may lead skiers through panoramic Gvibari Pass or to medieval Ushguli villages, among the highest continuously inhabited in Europe. The best times to experience this are December to April.

#4: Bear watch in Katmai National Park

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) graze on sedge grass in Hallo Bay in Alaska's Katmai National Park

Alaska ’s Katmai National Park is home to one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in the world. Far from the crowded viewing platforms of the Brooks Camp Visitor Center, a guided trip along the Katmai coast with outfitters like AK Adventures reveals a different side of the park .

Here, the bears feast on a diversity of foods: sedges, grasses, razor clams, salmon. “For me, seeing a single brown bear in the wild is meaningful because it is a sign that the landscape is healthy enough to support it,” says Alaska photographer Acacia Johnson , a frequent National Geographic contributor.

#5: Hear legendary live music in Kyoto

A singer on stage rocks out with a guitar

Guidebooks speak of Kyoto as frozen in time, with hushed temples and meditative gardens. But after hours, Japan ’s former imperial capital reveals a live music scene that can be loud and irreverent. At venues like Jittoku and Field , rock, swing, and even Irish music echo into the night. Whatever you’re into, from jazz to punk, there’s a community to share your jam. “This is what happens in Japan when the mask comes off,” says Kyoto guide Van Milton.

#6: Cruise an epic river in Colombia

A view down onto the Magdalena River

About 80 percent of Colombia ’s population lives in the river basin of the Magdalena, which flows for nearly a thousand miles from the Andes to the Caribbean. AmaWaterways’ new cruises on the river—said to be the first by a major cruise operator—take seven-night trips from Cartagena via Mompós to Barranquilla. Stops at colonial towns, performances of vallenato   and cumbia music, and visits to a stilt-house village highlight the region’s culture along this mighty waterway.

#7:   Road trip Route 66 in New Mexico

A ballon festival in Albuquerque at dusk

For nearly a century, Route 66 has beckoned to travelers. A trip along the Mother Road through New Mexico hits timeless landmarks , such as quirky motels and curio shops in and around Tucumcari and symbolic etchings in Petroglyph National Monument . In Gallup—mentioned as one of the places to “get your kicks” in Nat King Cole’s 1946 hit song “Route 66”—you can take in performances featuring Zuni, Lakota, and Diné (Navajo) dancers.

Some 18 miles of the highway traverse Albuquerque , the longest urban interlude of the route in the United States. And it’s getting a half-million-dollar glow-up with the ongoing restoration of vintage neon signs along Central Avenue.

While cruising down the brightened strip, stop at the new West Central Route 66 Visitor Center , with its museum and outdoor amphitheater. The center will host events like lowrider car shows, drive-in movies, and artisan markets.

#8: Explore ancient art in Algeria

A guide, wearing the traditional robes and shesh headscarf of the nomadic Tuareg tribe, stands on an outcrop at Adrit.

Algeria is home to Africa’s largest national park, which holds one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ancient rock art. Tassili n’Ajjer National Park is a geologic wonderland of sandstone towers, arches, and sculpted outcrops. But these rock forests are only half the story.

Neolithic herders and hunter-gatherers carved 15,000 petroglyphs here, including images of elephants, giraffes, and rhinos. These animals are more commonly associated with sub-Saharan Africa—a hint that this arid wilderness was once a grassland crisscrossed by waterways. Five- to seven-day guided tours with Fancy Yellow take in the most spectacular works of Tassili’s art, like the “Crying Cows,” engraved at the base of a stone pinnacle 7,000 years ago.

Travelers with more time might want to combine a trip to Tassili with a visit to the Algerian Sahara’s other great geologic marvel: the extraordinary mountain range of Ahaggar National Park .

#9: Dive with sharks in Western Australia

top 20 travel destinations

Stretching almost 700 miles along the Indian Ocean north of Perth, Western Australia’ s Coral Coast is studded with natural wonders. But Ningaloo Reef is the star. Here, you can dive with giants: Some 300 to 500 whale sharks ,   one of the largest congregations on Earth, gather along the reef each year between March and July. Ethical outfitters ensure divers give the sharks space and avoid feeding them or using flash photography.

Even more megafauna abound from July to October, when about 40,000 humpback whales migrate along the Coral Coast. You can also commune with more than 10,000 dugongs in Shark Bay or swim with manta rays at Coral Bay.

#10: Hike a volcano in Panama

A sustainability leader, Panama recently launched its “1,000 Kilometers of Trails” project , which seeks to bring outdoor recreation and green tourism to rural communities and protected areas.

First out of the gate is the Ruta de la Caldera , a system of five trails around the extinct Valle de Antón volcano . The treks take in waterfall-speckled landscapes, according to photographer Rose Marie Cromwell , who hiked sections of the Ruta de la Caldera over five days.

“There were some spectacular views on top of the volcanic crater—interesting land formations covered in so much green,” she says.

#11: Catch the eclipse at Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, a boat of tourists, and a rainbow as seen from Niagara Falls, Ontario

Directly in the path of totality, Niagara Falls will offer views of a total solar eclipse, which won’t occur again in the contiguous U.S. until 2044. For about three and a half minutes, beginning at approximately 3:18 p.m. on April 8, the sky will darken over the thunderous cataract as the moon crosses between Earth and the sun.

On the U.S. side of the falls , Terrapin Point, Prospect Point, and the Observation Tower will be prime viewing areas (if clouds stay away). From the Canadian side, an excellent vantage point is Table Rock. A side bonus: The sunny-day rainbow that hovers above the falls will become pink.

#12: Trek a glacier in Chile

In Chilean Patagonia‘s Laguna San Rafael National Park , visitors can trek to glaciers, taking in a panorama of pale blue ice massifs and glacial waterways. Some 17,300 glaciers still cover the whole of Patagonia’s ice fields, but rising temperatures are rapidly melting them. Climate scientists say sustainable tourism , such as hikes with Chilean outfitters like Turismo Valle Leones , supports local communities and inspires travelers to learn more about how to protect glaciers.

#13: Step back in time on Menorca

the archeological site of Naveta des Taudons lit up by a sky of stars

Spain ’s Balearic Islands are best known for the jet-set beach destinations of Ibiza and Mallorca . But quiet, less developed Menorca has a unique mother lode: The archipelago’s greatest repository of ancient architecture.

In an area of just 270 square miles, Menorca has a total of 1,574 inventoried archaeological sites , ranging from the foundation blocks of small dwellings to well-preserved village centers that existed long before the Roman Empire. Most striking are the navetas,   megalithic tombs dating back to 1600 B.C.; talayots, watchtowers built from mortarless blocks of limestone; and   taulas,   shrines exclusive to Menorca that evoke Stonehenge pillars. These remnants of the Talayotic Menorcan culture, the first civilization to inhabit the island, have now been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List .

The open-air monuments are easy to visit; the island’s Me-1 road passes by some of the best-preserved sites, including the settlements of Talatí de Dalt, Naveta des Tudons, and Taula de Torretrencada.

Reenter the 21st century at the new Hauser & Wirth gallery in the picturesque town of Mahón. Housed in repurposed 18th-century hospital buildings, the cultural venue presents contemporary art exhibits and has an outdoor sculpture trail with works by Louise Bourgeois and Joan Miró.

#14: Ride classic rails in Scotland

A view from inside the Royal Scotsman as it drives through the Highlands

Exploring Scotland ’s wild, scenic Highlands doesn’t have to mean roughing it. The Royal Scotsman train glides among the moody lochs and dramatic peaks in style. New suites debuting in May 2024 sport interiors that reflect the compelling landscapes through dark woods, wool tweeds , and richly patterned bespoke tartans crafted by Scottish brand Araminta Campbell . After a day spent hiking to waterfalls or playing rounds of golf (a sport inextricably tied to the nation), guests can wind down with a massage at the onboard spa.

Departing Edinburgh ’s Waverley Station, the two- to seven-night rail journeys cross the heart of the Highlands, from Perthshire to Inverness to the rugged west coast. During stops guests can tour castles, stargaze in Cairngorms National Park , sample whisky at revered distilleries, and even take a dip in a loch.

#15: Find authentic flavor in Thailand

The Isaan region in northeastern Thailand is known for its distinctive cuisine that reflects influences from bordering Laos and Cambodia. “Isaan is a hidden gem of Thailand,” says Weerawat “Num” Triyasenawat, the chef at Samuay & Sons , a Michelin Guide -recommended restaurant in the Isaan city of Udon Thani.

#16: Wander tea trails in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is virtually synonymous with tea. The island nation is one of the world’s top producers of tea leaves. British colonists introduced the first bushes about 200 years ago. Now visitors can trace the footsteps of historic planters on the new, nearly 200-mile Pekoe Trail , the country’s first long-distance walking route.

Starting just outside Kandy, the trail follows the 19th-century tracks upon which workers and horse-drawn carts transported freshly plucked leaves. Hikers pass through hill towns and tea estates and can stop to take a cooking class or savor a cup of aromatic Ceylon tea.

#17: Gallery hop in São Paulo

São Paulo, Brazil ’s largest city, is an art lover’s paradise, home to numerous galleries, exhibitions, and street murals. The crowning jewel is the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), which is expanding to showcase more of its 11,000-plus artworks, from pre-Renaissance paintings to contemporary sculptures. Departing from the usual model of exhibiting works on walls, MASP hangs some pieces against clear panels, allowing visitors to view the art from all angles.

#18: Raft the rapids in West Virginia

An overhead view of people rafting the Gauley River in Gauley River National Recreation Area

Despite its name, West Virginia ’s New River is actually one of the oldest on Earth, perhaps as old as 360 million years. The river falls 750 feet in only 50 miles between sandstone cliffs. It eventually merges with the Gauley River.   Outfitters such as ACE Adventure Resort can arrange whitewater rafting trips here on Class III to V rapids through the longest and deepest river gorge in the Appalachians.

#19: Go antiquing in Hudson Valley

Shoppers congregate inside the Basilica Hudson

The bucolic Hudson Valley is booming, thanks to an influx of New York City residents during the pandemic. But it’s long been a mecca for creatives: Its landscapes inspired America’s first artistic fraternity, the Hudson River School. Antique collectors will be drawn to the hundreds of stores, boutiques, craft shops, and flea markets that sell everything from colonial furniture and rare books to mid-century modern decor. For vintage finds, head to the Antique Warehouse in Hudson, Sister Salvage in Catskill, and Opera House Co. in Athens.

“There’s a common denominator here—the charming historic villages,” says Sarah Gray Miller, owner of Coxsackie antique store UnQuiet . From Stuyvesant to Saugerties, these towns “share a strong commitment to preservation.”

#20: Sleep on the water in British Columbia

The exterior of the Tofino Wilderness Resort reflected in the lake

The newly reopened Tofino Wilderness Resort , owned by the Ahousaht First Nation, is an idyllic base from which to explore the western coast of British Columbia ’s Vancouver Island. In the heart of Clayoquot Sound, the luxury floating lodge was renovated with lumber cut from timber which fell on-site. Through guided whale-watching trips or visits to the Freedom Cove artists’ sanctuary, the Ahousaht share with guests their philosophy, hishuk ish tsawalk (“everything is one”), celebrating the interconnectedness of people and nature in a land they’ve occupied for thousands of years.

Austria is the best country for solo travel, according to a new analysis.

Your first solo trip is more than just a vacation—it’s a journey of self-discovery, independence, and adventure on your own terms. But where you choose to go can make or break your solo traveling experience. The best solo travel destinations put you on the path to a smooth, rewarding experience that feels safe, easy, and welcoming.

So, how do you find the perfect place for a solo trip? A new analysis from Places to Travel on the best countries for solo travel can help.

Their team of researchers looked at factors about each country that can make a big difference for a solo traveler, such as crime and safety, how widely English is spoken and understood, cost of public transportation and accommodations, and the overall quality of life. The data came from a mix of high-quality sources, including the Global Peace Index, Numbeo surveys, English test results, and travel budgeting sites.

“Solo travel can be a nerve-wracking thing,” said Jason Wilson, chief executive officer of Places to Travel, in a press release about the report. “Not traveling with another person can also be risky depending on where you go, so it’s important to either look after yourself or pick an itinerary that ensures you won’t run into trouble.”

Here are the rankings of the 10 best countries for solo travel, according to Places to Travel.

Best country for solo travel: Austria.

Austria took the crown as the best country for solo travel, racking up an impressive overall index score of 7.33. With high marks for quality of life, healthcare, safety, and low crime risk, it’s the kind of place where you can feel confident exploring on your own. Sure, accommodations average $160 per night (a bit steep for budget travelers), but the country makes up for it with budget-friendly public transportation—an average one-way trip costs just $2.68. Plus, with the highest English proficiency score on the list, you won’t be left playing charades to order a slice of Sachertorte. Don’t miss the breathtaking beauty of Hallstatt, a fairy-tale village nestled between the mountains and the lake. It’s Instagram gold!

Denmark: the second-best country for solo travel.

Ranked as the second-best country for solo traveling, Denmark shines with its stellar quality of life, low crime risk, and excellent healthcare. At $3.45 for the typical one-way ticket, public transportation is more expensive than in Austria, but the average hotel cost is just $133 per night. Plus, with a warm, welcoming vibe, solo travelers will feel right at home in Denmark, whether you’re cycling down the picturesque streets of Copenhagen or climbing the migrating sand dune of Råbjerg Mile.

3. Switzerland

Places to Travel ranked Switzerland as one of the best countries for solo travel.

Switzerland came in as the third-best country for solo travel, thanks to its high scores for quality of life and safety. However, solo travelers might be in for some sticker shock at the prices in this destination—Places to Travel found that the average hotel came in at $191 a night and a one-way public transportation ticket runs $3.91, the highest of all countries on the list. But the breathtaking beauty and hiking opportunities in places like Grindelwald (gateway to the Top of Europe, the highest train station in Europe) make it worth every penny.

4. Singapore

Singapore took the 4th spot on the list of the best places for solo travelers.

If you’re up for a long-haul flight, Singapore makes an excellent destination for solo travelers. It came in fourth place for its ultra low-cost public transportation (just $1.48 for a one-way ticket), high safety, and high English proficiency. Just be sure to leave plenty of room in your budget for accommodations—Singapore has the highest nightly hotel costs ($196) of the best countries for solo travel. While there, unwind among the stunning orchids and serene lakes at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then fuel up at the world-renowned hawker stalls.

Travelers can chase the Northern Lights in Finland, one of the best countries for solo travel.

With an overall score of 7.1, Finland took the fifth spot on the list of the best countries for solo travel. It scored well on the Global Peace Index, along with metrics for healthcare and quality of life. The average night at a hotel costs $125—not bad for a solo trip. Plus the country offers so much to see and do, whether you want to wander through Helsinki’s vibrant design district, cozy up in a cottage on Lake Saimaa , or chase the Northern Lights in Lapland.

Norway—one of the best countries for solo travel.

High English proficiency levels, healthcare scores, and safety earned Norway the number six spot on the list of the best solo travel destinations. While its public transportation costs are on the pricey end of the spectrum ($3.86 for a one-way ticket, on average), accommodations aren’t too expensive. The average nightly hotel cost is just slightly better than Finland at $124. Kickstart your solo trip to Norway in Bergen, where you can explore the picture-perfect historic wharf, hike Mount Fløyen, and sample traditional lefse—a delicious potato flatbread.

7. Portugal

Portugal had the lowest average hotel costs on the list of the best countries for solo travel.

Portugal emerges as a top country for solo travelers, taking the seventh spot on this list. Whether you’re trying to find the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon, sampling wine in Porto, or soaking up the sun on the stunning Algarve coast, Portugal offers a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation for those traveling on their own. It’s also a fantastic bang for your buck, with public transportation priced at just $2.14 for the average one-way ticket and an average hotel night costing only $98—a steal!

Belgium is a hidden gem for solo travelers

With nightly hotel costs at $118 and a trip on public transportation at $2.68, Belgium won’t break the bank for people traveling on their own. It also makes a great jumping off point for other parts of Europe after you’ve explored the country’s charming cities and historic sites.

Germany is 9th on the list of the best countries for solo travel.

No need to look for a hostel if you’re on a budget—the average nightly hotel cost in Germany is just $106.

Sweden rounds out the list of the best countries for solo travel.

  • Best for public transportation: Germany
  • Best for foodies: Vietnam

Whether you're up for castle crawls in Germany or gaping at the northern lights in Norway, these are the best countries for solo travel abroad.

Thailand has everything you could want as a solo traveler: it's safe, affordable, and easy to get around. And, because it's such a popular place to visit, it's a cinch to meet people if you're looking for some company. Explore the delicious food, thrilling nightlife, and tranquil spas of Bangkok. The beautiful beaches of Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands are tropical paradises, ideal for lounging the day away by the Andaman Sea.

Public transportation is uncomplicated and readily available, from trains, subways, buses, and taxis to long-tail boats and tuk-tuks. Head here in mid-April for the Songkran Water Splashing Festival to celebrate the Songkran (New Year's) with parades, street parties, and performances.

Extremely hospitable locals and gorgeous scenery make Albania an up-and-coming destination for solo travelers. Journey to the Blue Eye spring near Saranda and you'll encounter some of the bluest, clearest water in the world. Since you might find the water too cold to swim in, head to the Albanian coast for fun and sun on any of the country's beautiful beaches — around the towns of Himarë, Dhërmi, and Ksamil in the south or Shëngjin in the north. If you're traveling in the cooler months, go for a soak in Përmet's Benja Thermal Baths — they're said to have healing properties.

You may also want to consider taking a day trip from Tirana to Berat, about two hours by car. Marvel at the city's stunning architecture, which has earned it the nickname "town of a thousand windows." From the Ottoman-era buildings and medieval castles to the mosques and Holy Trinity Church, you'll quickly see why the city — along with Gjirokaster in the South — has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site .

Arctic-Images/Getty Images

Costa Rica has long had a reputation as one of the happiest countries in the world, and it's easy to see why. You'll find plenty of outdoor activities to appeal to your adventurous side, from whitewater rafting down the Reventazón River and zip lining through gorgeous rain forests to rappelling down waterfalls and hiking in Arenal Volcano National Park .

If you need a bit of respite between all these activities, Arenal has hot springs that are perfect for relaxing. And if stretching out on white sand is more your vibe, there are loads of low-key beaches popular with female solo travelers along the Pacific coast, near national park Manuel Antonio .

Germany has several major cities that are accessible to anyone traveling on their own. Hop on a bike in Berlin to explore the city's abundance of museums, historical sites, cafés, nightclubs, and parks. Munich is hopping during Oktoberfest , but if you'd rather avoid the crowds, you can enjoy its beer gardens any time of year. And if you head to Frankfurt, you'll discover an eclectic array of museums, cafés, boutiques, restaurants, and a lush botanical garden in this increasingly popular city.

You should also consider planning side trips to see some of Germany's famous castles — there are over 20,000 of them. From the Gothic-style Liechtenstein Castle to the dramatic Neuschwanstein Castle , visiting any of Germany's magical old sites will have you feeling like you stepped straight into a fairy tale.

Renting a car is expensive when you're not splitting the costs, something to take into account when considering where to travel alone in Europe. Germany's excellent and relatively inexpensive public transportation system makes it easy to get around by train and bus.

Endless adventure and dishes to tantalize your tastebuds await in Vietnam. Hop on a boat that departs from Hạ Long Bay and cruise through Bai Tu Long Bay, home to some of the world's most striking blue water and natural landscapes. Take a guided tour of Sơn Đoòng, the largest natural cave in the world. Visit Hội An during the full moon and you'll be welcomed by the awe-inspiring sight of hundreds of lanterns floating down the Thu Bồn River during the city's monthly full moon festival.

In Ho Chi Minh City, you can indulge in bánh xèo (a crispy, filled rice flour pancake) and steaming bowls of pho at Bến Thành Market, one of the city's earliest surviving structures, and brush up on Vietnam War history during a tour of the War Remnants Museum and the Củ Chi Tunnels. Travel to Hanoi to explore the capital's impressive historical and cultural sites, and take a leisurely stroll around Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

There's a reason why Iceland has consistently ranked among the hottest destinations in recent years: The country is a haven for travelers who love the outdoors, with caves to explore, volcanoes and glaciers to hike, and geothermal spas to soak in. Plus, it's the most peaceful country in the world, according to the 2024 Global Peace Index report, making it among the best countries for solo female travel.

From Reykjavík, consider taking a day trip to the ever-popular Blue Lagoon or go whale watching in Faxaflói Bay. For those wanting to get out of the city, Thingvellir National Park  offers camping, hiking trails, horseback riding, and the freshwater Silfra fissure , considered one of the best diving spots in the world. No matter what's on your itinerary, make sure to leave time to eat some of the country's delectable pastries .

New Zealand

New Zealand is a popular destination for backpackers, hikers , and thrill-seekers striking out on their own — maybe because it's the fourth most peaceful country in the world, according to the 2024 Global Peace Index. It's also an easy place to meet fellow travelers for shared treks and other incredible experiences. Take a cruise through the fjords, rain forests, and waterfalls of Milford Sound; heli-hike your way through Franz Josef Glacier ; hike part (or all) of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing ; explore the Waitomo Glowworm Caves ; or go whale-watching in the Bay of Plenty .

If you need some downtime from all your adventuring, take a day trip to Waiheke Island for wine tours or make your way to the Hobbiton Movie Set to wander the real-life version of the Shire.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

With a thriving backpacker culture and accommodating resorts, Mexico is an optimal place for any type of solo trip. And, if you're coming from the U.S. or Canada, there are loads of direct flights. Mexicans on the whole are warm, and the country is dotted with cultural sites and a beautiful natural landscape — never mind all the tacos, empanadas, and tortas!

You'll find Mayan ruins near Cancun , whale watching in Los Cabos, Instagram opportunities in Tulum , tamales and mezcal in Oaxaca , and a thriving art scene in Mexico City .

Switzerland

Switzerland is known for its natural beauty, and there's no better way to see the country than by train. Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass , which gives you unlimited travel by train, bus, and boat, and journey past stunning waterfalls, forests, and lakes. Then, hop off the train to hike the Alps, visit medieval castles, and eat raclette and fondue.

In the country that invented milk chocolate, indulging in the decadent, creamy treat is a no-brainer. But instead of simply picking up a bar of Toblerone or Lindt at the nearest grocery store, take a chocolate-themed walking tour in Lucerne or Zürich, or visit one of the area's several world-famous chocolate factories.

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Chile's landscape is as beautiful as it is diverse. Whether you explore Torres del Paine National Park or the San Rafael Glacier in Patagonia, climb an active volcano in the Lake District , or camp in the Atacama Desert for incredible stargazing, you're sure to find an adventure that suits your fancy.

Adventure meets culture in capital city Santiago, which is full of museums and galleries and easy to navigate by foot or bicycle. Browse boutiques, hang out in cafés, and meet other travelers at cocktail bars in the Bellavista neighborhood. You can get panoramic views of the capital from Santa Lucía Hill or nearby San Cristóbal Hill in Santiago Metropolitan Park.

Netherlands

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

For any first-time solo traveler, the Netherlands is a great place to get your newly independent feet wet. Begin in Amsterdam and do as the locals do: Get around by bike . Start in Vondelpark , a popular urban park, then bike to world-famous museums like the Van Gogh Museum , passing the city's picturesque canals and bridges along the way.

Head to the Netherlands between mid-April and the first week of May and you'll be welcomed by a glorious array of the country's most beloved flower: the tulip. The Keukenhof , also known as the Garden of Europe, is located just outside Amsterdam and boasts over seven million bulbs and hundreds of varieties of tulips. Or, go to Noordoostpolder to see even more colorful blooms during the annual Tulip Festival .

Spain has a little bit of everything to please everyone: art museums, gorgeous architecture, delicious food, stunning beaches, exciting nightlife, and jaw-dropping hikes.

In Barcelona, wander Park Güell , a UNESCO World Heritage site full of modern architecture, sculptures, and mosaics designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Continue your Gaudí tour at cathedral Sagrada Família before moving on to the Picasso Museum . When you start to get hungry, make your way to Mercado de La Boqueria , the oldest market in the city.

You can also find some of the world's best beaches in Spain , such as Portinatx on Ibiza and Lumebó Cove in Galicia. The brave and truly adventurous can join an organized hike through Caminito del Rey in Málaga or begin their journey along the famed Camino de Santiago.

Austria is a must-see for solo travelers with a taste for fine culture. See for yourself why Vienna is known as the City of Music and attend a concert at the State Opera House or the Musikverein . The city also boasts more than 100 museums, prime for exploring in between experiencing traditional Viennese coffeehouse culture.

In Salzburg, the backdrop to "The Sound of Music," fans of the movie can take themed tours of the city and round out their trip by visiting Mozart's Birthplace and climbing to the top of Hohensalzburg Fortress for unforgettable views of the city.

Denmark is another country that's easy for solo travelers. Start in Copenhagen and head to the Nyhavn district to see the city's iconic wooden ships and colorful townhouses lining the canal. Afterward, take a stroll through Tivoli Gardens . While beloved for its amusement park, the popular attraction also features flower gardens, bubble fountains, and an aquarium.

Shakespeare aficionados should head to Kronborg Castle , a UNESCO World Heritage site that inspired Elsinore Castle in "Hamlet." While there, take the train to nearby Hillerød, where you'll find Frederiksborg Castle, home to the Danish Museum of National History .

First stop: Tokyo. Whether you shop in the pricey Ginza neighborhood, ride to the top of the Tokyo Skytree , among the world's tallest towers, tour Sensō-ji temple , slurp ramen at Ichiran Shibuya (a chain serving inexpensive steaming bowls at no-frills booths), or stroll through a traditional garden, you'll never run out of things to do in this glitzy city.

If you need some rest from the hustle and bustle, you can take a bullet train to Kyoto which, although extremely popular with tourists, is much smaller than Tokyo; you'll find a plethora of shrines, gardens, and temples. Since the tea ceremony has its roots in Kyoto, which was formerly the royal capital, you may wish to partake in the tradition while you're there. Be sure to visit during the springtime to see the gorgeous cherry blossoms in bloom.

Visit Norway during the summer for warmer weather and lots of outdoor attractions and activities. In Oslo, you can explore the capital's many museums, restaurants, and parks by walking, cycling, or taking public transportation. Or, book a spot on a Hurtigruten coastal steamer — there's no single supplement on select voyages — and cruise through the country's famous fjords on a multiday adventure, stopping at numerous ports of call along the stunning coastline to hike, kayak, and more. You'll even cross the Arctic Circle!

On the other hand, if seeing the northern lights tops your list, a trip to Norway between November and March will land you there during peak aurora borealis season. For optimum viewing of the natural phenomenon, head to the heart of the aurora zone: the city of Tromsø.

As with Iceland, Norway is extremely safe and this makes it among the best countries for solo travel as a woman .

If the idea of traveling by yourself to a country where you don't speak the language makes you nervous, then opt to visit Ireland. In Dublin , you can take a literary walking tour of the UNESCO City of Literature , browse Grafton Street's bustling shops, and chat with other travelers in the Guinness Storehouse with a pint of the world-famous stout.

With its stunning scenery and friendly inhabitants, Galway is not to be missed, either. While you're there, stroll along the lovely Salthill Promenade, or park yourself in a traditional pub in Eyre Square to listen to live Irish folk music. If you're looking to get out of the city, hop on a ferry to the nearby Aran Islands to explore medieval ruins and forts, or take a public bus to the iconic Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views.

This South American country is perfect for those who just want to relax by the ocean and soak up the sun. Punta del Este may be best known for its gorgeous beaches, like Playa Mansa and Playa Brava. But, if you want to escape the crowds, consider visiting the more secluded beaches along Uruguay's Atlantic coast in Jose Ignacio and Rocha.

Montevideo isn't short on beaches, either, and for those who want to mix up sunbathing with cultural experiences, the capital also offers historical attractions, museums, and traditional Candombe music and dance performances.

Thanks to the camaraderie of the traditional sauna experience , it's easy to meet people in Finland as a solo traveler, no matter which of the country's top destinations you visit. The country is home to over three million saunas, from Helsinki to Tampere, which has nearly 60 and is considered the sauna capital of the world .

But there's more to Finland than saunas. In Helsinki, you'll find magnificent architecture, museums, parks, markets, and more — all easily accessible by foot or public transportation. Travel to the coasts to see a lovely array of lighthouses, or head to Rauma or Loviisa to spend a day in a wooden town. While it may be best to go to "The Land of the Midnight Sun" in the summer, visit during the winter for peak viewing of the northern lights .

With extensive folklore, outdoor adventure, and stunning beauty around every corner, Scotland is the perfect place to reconnect with yourself. It’s a safe, cozy sojourn for anyone who loves postcard-perfect views. Start off by exploring Edinburgh by bike, stopping at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Holyrood Park .

If golf is your thing, Scotland has more than 550 courses to choose from. Feeling brave? Head to the Scottish Highlands to seek out the legendary underwater monster at Loch Ness, and while you're there, visit Urquhart Castle , which dates back to the 13th century.

Australia is an exceptionally safe place and is a popular solo travel destination. You’ll probably want to fly between most places — this is a huge country, after all — but you can also rent a car and indulge in an Australian road trip. Or, go old-school and traverse the country by train on The Ghan , where you can experience the outback on a journey from Adelaide to Darwin.

Why not kick off your trip in Sydney, the country's biggest city and capital of New South Wales? Touch down here to find a friendly vibe and thriving art, food, and sports scenes; you can shake off your jetlag walking around Sydney Harbour or exploring the white-sand shore at Bondi Beach. In Victoria, ride the tram around Melbourne for a coffee shop crawl. Commune with nature down in Tasmania, where the island's many hiking trails allow you to experience Australia's natural splendor by foot. Up north, the Great Barrier Reef awaits snorkelers off the coast of Far North Queensland.

From the slopes of British Columbia to the cosmopolitan wonders of Toronto, Canada has tons to keep you entertained, even when you’re alone. Our neighbor to the north is a quick flight (or a reasonable drive depending on where you’re coming from and going to) and accessible in terms of language, exchange rate, and transportation.

If you opt for Canada's largest city, explore the arts and culture of Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre , eat your way through St. Lawrence Market , or get to know the city's eclectic range of neighborhoods. Over in Vancouver , you can bike your way through the waterfront city, or cross the vertigo-inducing Capilano Suspension Bridge , a 450-foot-long, 230-foot-high bridge cutting through lush woodland. Go straight to Alberta to explore Banff National Park ’s famous glacial lakes and Rocky Mountain vistas.

Book a solo trip to Croatia to swim at spectacular beaches , dive into rich history, and eat delectable cuisine. Become a beach bum on the unspoiled shores of the Dalmatian Islands, where you’ll have blue waters, white sands, and dramatic limestone cliffs to admire as you lounge. Then, make your way to the medieval city of Dubrovnik to admire the red-roofed stone buildings of its UNESCO-listed Old City and eat your weight in white truffle pasta and fresh seafood.

If you love ancient history, desert activities, and scuba diving, Egypt is the solo travel destination for you — and a cruise down the Nile can be one of the safest and most convenient ways to see everything. Eat delicious falafel and go shopping in Cairo , then gape at the Great Pyramids in Giza before returning to your five-star accommodations and sailing off to the next archaeological wonder; these include seven UNESCO World Heritage sites like the incredible temples of Luxor, Karnak, and Abu Simbel.

Take solitary strolls along stunning cliffs, in quaint villages, or down urban streets in England. London is a natural starting point; traipse around Trafalgar Square , see the Rembrandts and Cézannes at the National Gallery , or enjoy a proper afternoon tea service at The Lanesborough .

Once you've had your fill, take the train to any number of charming English towns that'll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. One of the best parts of traveling to England is the long, rich history, and you’ll find plenty of that in its storybook castles and even in cities like Leeds in Yorkshire.
