Top caves to visit in south africa | 3 captivating natural caverns to explore.
Whether you’re looking for a rocky adventure or simply admiring the natural wonders of the world , visiting a cave is an excellent experience for all types of adventure seekers.
Unsplash/Julia Fiander
Looking to learn where these hidden treasures are located ? Take a look at a few caverns and cave systems within South Africa’s crevasses .
Cango Caves (Oudtshoorn)
Known as the most extensive cave system in Africa , the Cango Caves is tough to beat when exploring the majesty of South African caves. While only a small section of this expansive network is visible and accessible to tourists, you’ll enjoy plenty of sights and activities.
Whether marvelling at stunning mineral formations or navigating tight passages, a trip to the Cango Caves will surely be a memorable experience. Be sure to book an adventure tour to get assistance while you shimmy your way through narrow tunnels.
If you’re not looking to experience a tight squeeze, you can also opt to listen to your tour guide about the extensive history of these caves.
Motouleng Caves (near Clarens)
Also known as the ‘Fertility Caves,’ this rock-filled spot is a sacred space and is an excellent option for individuals looking for a unique cave visit. This site is used for various religious practices and is often the location for spiritual events.
Visitors must dress appropriately and act orderly to respect this holy site. The walk toward the cave is filled with natural beauty and wonders, such as the Caledon River flowing nearby. Entrance to the Motouleng Caves is free of charge for all visitors.
Sudwala Caves (Mpumalanga)
Often referred to as one of the oldest caves in the world. The Sudwala Caves were formed more than 200 million years ago. Here, tourists can witness a wide assortment of natural formations and life inside the caves.
From dazzling dolomites to the 800 bats within the cave walls, the Sudwala Caves are an excellent site to immerse oneself in the more peculiar parts of the world’s natural beauty. The main cave has also been known to be used as a concert hall due to the booming acoustics these hollow halls provide.
