Incredible Kardamena Beach: Why You Need To Visit

kardamena beach kos

Last updated on August 2nd, 2022

Just 18 kilometers south of the town of Kos is the picturesque resort of Kardamena, which enjoys year long gentle breezes and the lapping waters of the Aegean Sea. This one time fishing town is blessed with some truly magnificent scenery and is dramatically set against the backdrop of the Kalymnos and Kapparo mountains.

Kardamena Beach

Kardamena beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Greek island of Kos. The sparkling ocean water and soft sand make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the incredible views. There are plenty of beach umbrellas and sun loungers for visitors to use, as well as a few restaurants and cafes for grabbing a bite. With its 3 kilometer strip of sandy beach, there’s plenty of space to soak up some sunny rays and take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Aegean. Even during the height of the season, quieter spots can be found by venturing just a little farther from the centre. For the more adventurous intent on mixing up their relaxation time with some adrenaline-inducing activities, parasailing, jet-skis, and similar activities are on hand. For the more adventurous still, scuba diving opportunities are on offer too along the beach in Kardamena if you’d like to take a peek at some of the marine life beneath the waters. For a slightly more relaxed and enjoyable day trip, try a stand-up paddling adventure and explore the hidden corners of Kardamena.

Plenty of Nightlife

With over 100 bars, discos and clubs to choose from, there’s surely something to satisfy all tastes. Most of the nightlife takes place in the somewhat predictably named Bar Street which hosts all styles of music from garage to indie to pop. Plenty of traditional Greek tavernas are on hand too, where you can sample local Greek style cuisine. Some of these restaurants are perfectly situated overlooking the harbor, which is always a delight to the eye in the evening, providing the ideal backdrop as you tuck into your souvlaki or maybe a moussaka, all complemented with a delicious Greek salad replete with olives and feta cheese. And don’t forget the freshly baked bread!

Ideally situated for day trips

Another appeal about Kardamena is the ease with which visitors can explore other parts of the island such as Kos Town with its medieval castle and ancient walls. Some visitors take a short boat trip to the nearby volcanic island of Nisyros with its winding roads that lead up to the volcano’s smoking Stefanos Crater or caldera. Remember to take some decent foot gear when trekking the volcanic slopes and don’t rely on sandals and flip-flops.

Things to do in and around Kardamena

No matter your situation, whether you’re traveling solo, as a family, or larger group, there are plenty of things to enjoy in and around Kardamena that will make your holiday fun and interesting. The ancient Temple of Apollo and ruins of Asklepion will be of interest to those who want to step into the historical resonance of the island. Given the island’s connection with such historical figures as Hippocrates, Alexander the Great and Cleopatra, it’s any wonder it maintains a distinct historical resonance.

How do you get from Kos Town to kardamena?

Kardamena can be reached by bus from Kos town, or by taxi.

A bus trip from Kos Town will cost you 3.50 Euros and will take approximate 45 mins. See Kos bus time schedules here .

A taxi ride will cost between 15 Euros and 25 Euros. To learn more about Kos taxi service, visit the website kosradiotaxi.gr

Kardamena - The queen of Kos nightlife

'the beautiful long sandy beach at Chelona cape near Kardamaina village at Kos island in Greece' - Kos

Built on the ruins of the ancient city of Alasarna, going back to the Classical period, the coastal village of Kardamena is a fun and colourful spot for holidays which attracts many visitors from around the world. Although the city itself is home to 1,800 residents, in the summer it turns into the most popular summer resort on the island. Tourists bask in the Mediterranean sun by day and troll the nightclubs by dusk. Kardamena is one of the liveliest destinations on Kos with a vivid nightlife and all the bars jammed at the Bar Street. The area takes over at night and becomes the number one location for parties . Kardamena will fully satisfy the restless party animal inside you with lots of music and dancing until the early hours.

The beach becomes alive again in the morning when tourists and residents head there for a swim in the refreshing water, for sunbathing or all sorts of water sports activities, including even parasailing. The beach tends to be crowded and busy due to its close proximity to the village. However, it is 3 km long and if you’re willing to walk a little bit, you’ll spot deserted parts with beautiful sand dunes and trees to lie under their natural shade.

In the village, beautiful and colourful buildings dot the coast. In the main square there are souvenir shops where, apart from the typical souvenirs to remind you your visit in Greece, you can buy small bottles of the local traditional drink of “kanellada” which is Kos ’ signature drink. Another way to spend your day when you stay in Kardamena is to take the ship to the nearby island of Nisyros and admire the awe-inspiring volcanic landscape. You could also visit the islet of Agia Eirini where there are hot springs with healing properties.

After a busy day, a good quality Greek lunch is a must! The seafood that is caught directly off the harbour is served in the local restaurants and “tavernas”. However, if you aren’t familiar at all with the Greek cuisine, you could taste traditional Greek specialties like the famous mousaka or meatballs.

If you are of the sporty type, the place offers a lot to do, such as dirt tracks and canyons around the village to explore. The terrain is also ideal for mountain biking till the historic village of Antimachia, although Kardamena has also rich cultural heritage. It is home of the ancient Temple of Apollo and various Roman ruins as well as basilicas like the church of Agia Barbara have been excavated here. As the city is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Alasarna, the “Alasarnia”, a festival with cultural events, such as concerts, plays or even cycling and chess contests, is organised annually.

Visitors from young to old enjoy the beauty of Kardamena and find that there is not a single day that is not spent in a more enjoyable place. The warm and friendly culture mixed with the delicious cuisine and golden sun drenched beaches are some of what draws people to this village.

Guide to Kardamena

Visual tour of kardamena.

Kardamena is a charming seaside town with a typically Greek atmosphere. The walls of the houses among the greenery shine with light colors, from beige to snow-white. The sun illuminates the cleanest sea and a cozy beach, about three kilometers long. The sand here is unusually dark, as it is of volcanic origin. And even now there is a dormant volcano very close by, to which many tourists are eager to reach in order to feel the power of the dormant element under their own feet. Not a single city in Greece can not be imagined without evidence of the past. Kardamena is no exception. Tired of lying on the beach you can go for a walk on the archaeological excavations. They reveal the remains of the ancient city of Alasarna, which once stood on the site of the present-day Kardamena. Ancientists can see the ruins of the temple of Apollo, the sanctuary of Hercules and the amphitheater built in later Roman times. Fortunately, not all the ancient buildings lie in ruins. Many of them have survived and now form the basis of the modern Kardamena.

Anna Kraskovska

Welcome dear travel fans! I've been traveling around the world for 20 years and most of my trips were to Asia. I think I am crazy about Asia since I was a child and will be happy to share this passion with you...

Kardamena  is considered to be the second most visited tourist center on Kos Island after the town of Kos.

It’s very popular among tourists due to numerous hotels, taverns and bars. Kardamena is also considered to be the nightlife center.  A lot of clubs and bars are open until morning. There is an opinion that the local clubs are not only equal to those in Kos, they are even better.

The settlement itself is rather small but its narrow streets are quite interesting. A large number of taverns, blue balconies and window blinds, grape vines creeping up the walls, trees and a small church create a lovely atmosphere of the place.

Kardamena is surrounded by a few ancient ruins of the Castle of the Order of St. John, ruins of the  Temple of Apollo  and even a small Ancient Theatre.

Besides, Kardamena boasts a great ceramics tradition; here existed a large number of workshops, the so-called “ tsoukalaria ”.

From the harbor you can travel by tourist ship to the neighboring volcanic island of Nisyros.  Numerous “travel agencies” near the harbor will offer you the widest selection of sea voyages.

Kardamena offers a wonderful beach  located under a green slope, which adds much beauty to the place.

The only disadvantage of Kardamena is close proximity to the airport and noise of landing planes.

TSA breaks record for most individuals screened on a single day, readies for record-breaking Independence Day weekend travel volumes

WASHINGTON — As airline passengers prepare to take to the skies this Independence Day holiday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for a sustained period of high passenger volumes. TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals from Thursday, June 27 through Monday, July 8, which is a 5.4% increase over 2023 Independence Day holiday travel volumes. On Sunday, June 23, TSA broke the record for most people screened on a single day, screening nearly 3 million (2.99 million) individuals . This summer’s record-breaking travel volumes reflect the role TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have in securing the nation’s transportation systems, while ensuring freedom of movement for people and commerce, which is vital to our country’s economic well-being.

TSA anticipates the peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals. TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. Seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”

Airline passengers should be aware that security screening technologies may vary by airport. Although TSA follows strict standardized screening protocols, it is important for passengers to arrive early and listen to the guidance provided by Transportation Security Officers (TSOs).

Below are some frequently asked questions that provide an overview of the TSA technologies and procedures individuals may encounter during screening process.

Do I need to show a boarding pass to the TSA officer?

All airline passengers must have their acceptable ID and boarding pass ready at the security checkpoint entrance.

Do I need to take off my shoes?

TSA requires individuals in standard screening lanes to remove their shoes during the screening process. However, individuals 12 and under or 75 and older are always permitted to keep their shoes on during the security screening process.

Passengers with TSA PreCheck may leave their shoes on unless they alarm during screening. Most airports have dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes during some peak hours. Some airports have blended lanes where passengers with TSA PreCheck are screened in standard lanes, but they will receive a card indicating they have TSA PreCheck to carry with them during screening, and will be screened as a TSA PreCheck passenger.

Can family members go through the TSA PreCheck lane with me?

Teenagers aged 13-17 may accompany TSA PreCheck enrolled parents or guardians through screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may accompany an enrolled parent or guardian in the TSA PreCheck lanes without restriction. This benefit is another reason to join the nearly 20 million people who have enrolled in TSA PreCheck. For customer flexibility, there are three TSA PreCheck enrollment providers from which passengers may choose: Telos, CLEAR and IDEMIA. For more information on any of the enrollment provider options and TSA PreCheck, visit www.tsa.gov/precheck .

Other advice from TSA

With more than 430 federalized, commercial airports nationwide, 685 security checkpoints and 2,412 security screening lanes, it may be challenging to know what to expect at any airport. Here are some additional tips to help ensure an efficient screening experience:

  • Pack smart. Always start packing with a bag that is empty to ensure there are no prohibited items present during security screening. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessible if they must be removed. Remember that all liquids must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if they are in your carry-on bag.
  • Arrive at the airport two hours before scheduled boarding time. Allow ample time to park,  navigate to the terminal, check luggage with the airline if needed and proceed through the checkpoint. Most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Review guidelines for traveling with children. Airlines may request proof of age documentation during check-in for children 12 and under traveling unaccompanied. Proof of age documentation must also be provided for children two and under planning to sit on an adult passenger’s lap. A birth certificate is an acceptable proof of age.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Do you have a question about an item and whether or not it is allowed through security screening? Download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature to determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage. You may also snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Passengers may text their question to TSA by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872). Passengers who need additional assistance through security screening may request a TSA  Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). A PSS is a TSO who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or those who need additional screening assistance. Individuals should request passenger assistance at least 72 hours in advance by contacting  our TSA Cares passenger support line  at (855) 787-2227. Live assistance for both the TCC and TSA Cares is available weekdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, or weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
  • Double-check your luggage tags. Many bags look alike, so passengers should tag every piece of checked luggage with their name and address. We also recommended they include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving checked luggage at baggage claim, it is important that individuals check the tags to ensure they have picked up the correct bag.
  • Do you carry a firearm? Prepare, pack and declare. Passengers may travel with a firearm , but it must be secured as the passenger’s checked baggage; packed unloaded; locked in a hard-sided case and declared to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter. Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport and in the passenger cabin of an aircraft, even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. TSA does not confiscate or seize firearms. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint on their person or in their carry-on luggage, the TSO will contact local law enforcement to safely unload and take possession of the firearm. Law enforcement may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to almost $15,000, and for the first offense, passengers who bring a firearm to a security checkpoint will lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility for five years. Second violations will result in permanent disqualification from the program and additional civil penalties.
  • Do you have TSA PreCheck? Make sure your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in your airline reservation. TSA PreCheck passengers do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, food items and light jackets at the TSA checkpoint. TSA’s wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes whereas as standard lanes are under 30 minutes. If you are not yet enrolled in TSA PreCheck, you may enroll via one of TSA’s authorized enrollment providers starting as low as $77.95 for a five-year membership. Most new enrollees receive their KTN within three to five days. Members may renew membership online up to six months prior to expiration for another five-year term starting as low as $68.95. Visit TSA PreCheck at www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information, and to begin your enrollment.
  • Respect frontline aviation workers. Violence and unruly behavior in airports and onboard aircraft are not acceptable and will result in significant delays at security checkpoints. TSOs, along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Assaulting a TSA employee is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest.

Six Flags taking Fright Fest to extreme with ‘Saw,’ ‘The Conjuring,’ ‘Stranger Things’

big travel kardamena

Six Flags Entertainment is taking its fan-favorite Halloween event to the next level this year with the debut of Fright Fest Extreme – Presented By SNICKERS at two of its parks.

Building on last year’s “Saw” and “The Conjuring” experiences at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California and Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, those same parks are getting a complete Fright Fest overhaul, going heavy on intellectual property.

“I think Halloween turns the world upside down, and these Halloween movies are thrill rides, so it just became like the perfect fit for us,” Edithann Ramey, Six Flags’ chief commercial officer and “Chief Fright Officer,” told USA TODAY. “It's our busiest time of the year across the whole nation, and so we did want to invest big on making them the most exciting they can be.”

The world’s largest regional theme park operator is also expanding Fright Fest offerings at other parks across North America. Here’s what fans can expect.

What will Fright Fest Extreme include?

Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags Magic Mountain will get the most intellectual property theming.

“Visitors … will step into a world where nightmarish creatures inspired by legendary horror brands come to life with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures’ ‘SAW’ franchise, Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Army of the Dead,’ Warner Bros. Discovery’s ‘The Conjuring,’ ‘Annabelle’ and ‘The Nun,’ and Legendary Entertainment’s ‘Trick ‘r Treat,'” Six Flags announced Tuesday. “Guests at Six Flags Great Adventure will also be treated to a new experience from Legendary Entertainment’s ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ while visitors to Six Flags Mexico will have access to a special exclusive maze based on the bestselling comic series (DCeased) from DC Comics.”

Over the summer, Six Flags will announce additional IP offerings at other parks.

“The idea is to make it big across the United States, across all of our parks,” Ramey said. “This year we'll have seven or eight parks that have it. Next year, more will have it. So it's going to be something that gets incorporated throughout our whole system.”

Dark Universe: Universal Orlando’s ‘most terrifying attraction yet’ is coming to Epic Universe

How scary will Fright Fest Extreme be?

Fright Fest Extreme is designed to scare.

“There's a fanatic of Halloween, a real true thrill seeker that we want to delight,” Ramey said. “When we began this project, I literally went online and Googled the top Halloween franchises in America.” She wanted to understand what excited these fans and also appeal to a wide range of guests.

“Like ‘Saw’ is all about like getting killed maybe two minutes into the film and your head's exploding. That's one spectrum of it,” she said. “And then the other is ‘ Stranger Things ,’ which has this beautiful ’80s vibe and this storyline and this mass appeal …  There's a little bit of everything for everybody.”

The event will also feature creepy decor, outdoor mazes designed to make guests feel like they could really get lost in them, roving scare actors aiming to catch guests off guard, themed food and drinks, and roller coasters for a different kind of thrill.

What are the dates for Fright Fest Extreme?

Fright Fest Extreme will be held across 32 nights between Sept. 7 through Nov. 3 at both Six Flags Magic Mountain and Six Flags Great Adventure.

It’ll be the longest Fright Fest season ever for Six Flags Magic Mountain, which will host the event on select Thursdays through Sundays. Six Flags Great Adventure’s Fright Fest Extreme will run on select Wednesdays through Sundays.

Ramey says fans may want to come back multiple times throughout the season.

“Several of the houses have like choose your own experience, and after you go, you're going to want to do that again and again,” she said.

How much are tickets to Fright Fest Extreme?

Fright Fest Extreme will be a separately ticketed event not included with regular park admission. Prices vary by date and ticket type.

Single-night tickets include entry to all haunted houses. They start at $49 for Six Flags Great Adventure and $75 for Six Flags Magic Mountain as part of a three-day flash sale launched Tuesday.

Gold, Platinum and Diamond Season Pass holders, Six Plus members and Legacy members with a valid pass can get into the event for free but will have to pay a separate fee to enter haunted houses.

An express upgrade will also be available for purchase to cut waits.

“We also have spent some time thinking about the lines, and so when you're lining up to go into the maze, what are some of the sensory things that can be happening as you line up?” Ramey said. “Showing maybe a little bit of the film, or showing you some pictures of the film, or even having some scares along the way so (waiting in) line isn't as awful as you think it would be.”

Before ‘Star Trek,’ Gene Roddenberry Made His Mark on This Classic Western Series

The Big Picture

  • Gene Roddenberry wrote 24 episodes of the Western series Have Gun - Will Travel , showcasing his versatile writing talent.
  • The show was ahead of its time, featuring a unique main character, Paladin, who avoided unnecessary violence and embraced different cultures.
  • Roddenberry's work on Have Gun - Will Travel foreshadowed his creation of Star Trek, as both series aimed to challenge storytelling norms.

Before he created Star Trek , Gene Roddenberry worked as a freelance writer for a plethora of different programs beginning in the mid-1950s. But back then, the American Western was the most popular genre on television, which meant that Roddenberry wrote a few gunslinging tales in his day. Between hour-long and half-hour-long programs, there was almost always a Western on one of the Big Three television networks, and one of the most popular of the age was Have Gun - Will Travel . The six-season television series starred Richard Boone (from The Tall T ) and ran from 1957 until 1963, telling just about every traditional Western tale you could imagine. Roddenberry wrote his fair share of those stories himself, which made their own mark on his more popular science-fiction series.

Have Gun - Will Travel

What is 'have gun - will travel' about.

With a title like Have Gun - Will Travel , one might wonder what this "adult" Western is about. Richard Boone stars here as Paladin, a learned and intelligent gun-for-hire who travels around the country taking odd jobs and solving all sorts of problems . There are few recurring characters beyond Paladin himself, but that's actually to this show's benefit. Paladin was always friendly with others, but he ultimately worked the best on his own. The character's name derives from the legendary Middle Ages knights of the same name, and, indeed, he has a white chess knight embroidered on his holster. More than capable as a soldier on his own, Paladin wanders across the post-Civil War-era United States (he once served in the Union Army) as a "knight without armor," hoping to avoid violence at every turn.

Have Gun - Will Travel deals with everything from Native American conflicts, cattle rustling, bank robbery, interracial marriages, outlaw gangs, and more. If it happened in a Western , it likely happened at some point on Have Gun - Will Travel . According to Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh in The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946–Present , the series was an instant hit. It ranked as one of television's Top 5 programs in the ratings as early as its first season and was the third most popular Western of its time , just behind Gunsmoke and Wagon Train . It's also worth noting that the show's portrayal of its leading gunslinger was likely part of the reason it was so popular. Unlike other Western TV protagonists, Paladin was college-educated, well-read, and did everything he could to avoid unnecessary violence after his time in the Civil War. He was also willing to engage with different cultures and had an expensive palate that cost a considerable amount to maintain. No wonder his rates were so high.

Additionally, Paladin was one of the fastest guns in the Old West. Though he never hoped to fire his sidearm in battle, he often found himself in situations where violence was necessary. While many other Western heroes wore lighter colors to signify their stance in the fight between good and evil, Paladin wore all black and prided himself on his ethics despite his almost villainous appearance. Have Gun - Will Travel ran for 225 episodes, each chronicling a new half-hour adventure that would see our hero put to the test again . Simultaneously, a Have Gun - Will Travel radio show was also produced, with John Dehner of Gunsmoke fame voicing Paladin instead.

Gene Roddenberry Wrote 24 Episodes of 'Have Gun - Will Travel'

From the very beginning, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was involved in Have Gun - Will Travel . The third episode of the series, "The Great Mojave Chase," was the first episode penned by the future science-fiction author, and it immediately helped set the tone of the series. He would write several episodes throughout the first season, including "The Yuma Treasure" and the excellent Christmas tale "The Hanging Cross," which begins with Paladin removing his gun in the infamous intro sequence. However, Roddenberry wouldn't be acknowledged for his contributions to the series until the sixteenth episode, "Helen of Abajinian," aired in late 1957. The following year, the Writer's Guild of America granted him a "Best Original Script" award for the episode. And it's no wonder, as "Helen of Abajinian" is loads of wedding-themed fun .

In total, Roddenberry penned 24 episodes of Have Gun - Will Travel across all six seasons of the series . Though he only wrote a single episode in the show's fourth and fifth seasons, he wrote between five and six episodes per season for the rest of the series. Roddenberry writes Paladin as cool and collected, emphasizing his peculiar brand of morality. He has an air about him that makes him feel like something of a man outside of time, and while that's Paladin's aesthetic throughout the series, Roddenberry's episodes capture it best . "The Hanging Cross" is a particularly compelling episode where Paladin plays mediator between a grief-stricken rancher, Nathaniel Beecher ( Edward Binns ), and the local Pawnee chief Cah-la-te ( Abraham Sofaer ) at Christmastime. As Paladin seeks to discover the truth behind Beecher's missing son, he preaches a message of peace and hangs up his gun so that he can stop Beecher from killing the Pawnee without any bloodshed. It's a powerful moment when Paladin is challenged on his belief, and Roddenberry nails it in the climax.

In Have Gun - Will Travel , Roddenberry's distinct voice is seen throughout his episodes. Though the show would also help launch the careers of others—including Superman director Richard Donner , Mission: Impossible creator Bruce Geller , The Wild Bunch director Sam Peckinpah , and Dirty Harry co-writer Harry Julian Fink — Roddenberry was the show's most prolific writer besides the series creators, Herb Meadow and Sam Rolfe . It's no wonder then that he would go on to create his own series for CBS three years after Paladin's final adventure.

Roddenberry's Blueprints for 'Star Trek' Can Be Seen in This Western

It's long been said that when Gene Roddenberry first pitched Star Trek to CBS, he did so by calling it " Wagon Train to the Stars ." The Star Trek creator hoped to adapt the traditional Western theme of "Manifest Destiny" into outer space with the concept of the U.S.S. Enterprise exploring the greater reaches of the universe, the "final frontier." Though the original Star Trek series only lasted three seasons, it became a cult classic that spawned a massive franchise that is as strong as ever today. But while Star Trek might seem like the exact opposite of a series like Have Gun - Will Travel (set in the future rather than the past, an ensemble cast instead of a single hero, alien species instead of mythical Native Americans, etc.), there were a few more common threads than you might initially think. According to Edward Gross ' The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years , Roddenberry wanted to break free of the formula Westerns he'd been forced to write before.

But that's not all. Roddenberry felt limited by what issues he could and couldn't talk about on network television, so Star Trek 's futuristic setting was crafted to shift the entire conversation. Of course, we can see Roddenberry's yearnings for more in his Have Gun - Will Travel episodes, too . The acclaimed "Helen of Abajinian" doesn't feature a shootout at all and instead ends with a wedding that blends two cultures ( Star Trek would later feature one of the first interracial kisses on television ). "The Hanging Cross" doesn't conclude with a gunfight either, although it almost escalates there. Instead, a Christmas miracle (and Paladin's willingness to set down his gun) changes the entire outcome. And let's not forget about how, in most of Roddenberry's episodes, Native Americans have more depth and complexity, rarely (if ever) portrayed in a negative light.

It's easy to see how a character like Paladin, who seemed relatively progressive in his day and age, would appeal to Gene Roddenberry , whose political and cultural leanings would serve as the foundation for the Star Trek franchise. Have Gun - Will Travel was what someone like Rod Serling ( who once tried his own hand at the Western ) might call "a thinking man's Western." It made audiences pause and consider the implications of each and every conflict and, like Paladin himself, seek another, more peaceful solution. In the wake of the Vietnam War, this would've been a Western that most audiences could get behind. It was conservative enough in its material but progressive in its solutions. No doubt Gene Roddenberry contributed to the impressive legacy of Have Gun - Will Travel , which in turn contributed to the creation of Star Trek itself.

Have Gun - Will Travel is available to stream on Pluto TV in the U.S.

Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel will chop 152 jobs, the hotel chain reported in an official notice it sent to the state Employment Development Department.

“It is with regret that we inform you of the closure of Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel located at 1 Hegenberger Road in Oakland,” Terry Lewis, a Hilton area vice president, wrote in the WARN letter to the state EDD.

The shutdown is scheduled to take place Aug. 28, according to the WARN notice.

The Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel’s closure offers fresh evidence that economic maladies continue to afflict the Bay Area lodging market in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak more than four years ago.

The ailments for the hotel market in the Bay Area affect primarily lodging complexes that cater to business travelers and those that are not located in resort areas such as the Wine Country, Monterey Bay region or Big Sur.

“There are still a lot of problems with the hotel market in the Bay Area,” said Alan Reay, president of Atlas Hospitality Group, which tracks the California lodging market. “The cost of operating big full-service hotels that are business-oriented seems to outweigh the income they can generate.”

The hotel buildings and common areas are owned by Park Hotels & Resorts, which is leasing the land beneath the hotel from the Port of Oakland.

Park Hotels & Resorts has walked away from its ownership of two upscale San Francisco hotels due to their faltering financial performance.

Park Hotels said they could not comment about the pending closure of the hotel.

Both Oakland and San Francisco are plagued by problems that tend to make those cities less attractive to visitors and business travelers.

“You have problems with crime on Hegenberger Road in Oakland and you have problems with crime and homelessness in San Francisco,” Reay said.

“We deeply regret the impact this closure will have on our dedicated employees and their families,” Hilton stated in the WARN letter to the EDD. “We are committed to providing support during this transition, including providing options for transfer to other Hilton locations in the Bay Area.”

Despite the shutdown in Oakland, Hilton says it’s committed to the Bay Area market.

“Hilton continues to welcome guests across the Bay Area where Hilton and our franchise partners operate nearly 50 hotels,” Hilton stated in comments it provided to this news organization.

The iconic hotel operator said it still views the Bay Area as a market that offers plenty of opportunities.

“We remain committed to doing our part to drive business, tourism and growth across the Bay Area and California,” Hilton stated in the WARN letter.

Nevertheless, larger business-oriented hotels such as those in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose still must combat problems due to a lack of business travelers and the woes with the region’s office hubs, in Reay’s view.

“The office market is still depressed, people are still working remotely, and there has been a major drop off in conventions,” Reay said. “When you factor in the crime problems on Hegenberger Road in Oakland and in San Francisco, that’s why these hotels are struggling.”
