SDCC 2022: New Era of Star Trek Comic Books Launches with Star Trek #1

New ongoing series from IDW to debut in October!

STAR TREK #1 (2022) promo art by Ramon Rosanas - Art Not Final

IDW is proud to announce a bold new direction in Star Trek comics, beginning with a brand-new flagship ongoing series that goes where no one has gone before! Debuting in October 2022, STAR TREK #1 features art by Ramon Rosanas ( Marvel’s Star Wars, Ant-Man ), and scripts by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing , the creative team behind Star Trek: Year Five .

STAR TREK #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek multiverse, bringing together characters from across the galaxy — and all eras and variations of the beloved franchise — who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods.

Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus , he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

STAR TREK #1 - Sisko character design by Ramon Rosanas

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly – until Next Generation, Voyager , and Deep Space Nine came along!” Rosanas enthuses. “After that, I didn’t miss a single episode of those three series’ each week. Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

STAR TREK #1 - Data character design by Ramon Rosanas

“Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing says. “We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before — an Avengers -style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.”

STAR TREK #1 - T'Lir character design by Ramon Rosanas

“Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever,” says Kelly. “We’re both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.”

STAR TREK #1 - Sato character design by Ramon Rosanas

“ Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future,” says editor Heather Antos, “of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.”

STAR TREK #1 will be available in October with eight variant covers for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Ramon Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey, Cover C by David Aja (TBC), Cover D by Rachael Stott, and a sketch Cover E, as well as three additional retailer incentive covers by Rosanas and Francesco Francavilla. Fans will also be delighted to read a STAR TREK #1 prelude story from Rosanas, Kelly, and Lanzing in September’s highly-anticipated STAR TREK #400 , a monumental anthology issue!

The two security guards in this story are named after two of his colleagues, artists John Byrne and Dave Cockrum. Nineteen lettered art pages with very faint pencil breakdowns were completed but never delivered to the scheduled artist, Frank Bolle. Bolle may have been the cover artist for issues #60 and #61. He also worked on many other Western Publishing projects. The script and lettered art pages have been reproduced in Volume 124 of the Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection . Artist Matt Shults has published his adaptation of Trial By Fire online and I've included his cover art in this list. Check it out! The 10 Best Captain Kirk Episodes in 'Star Trek: The Original Series'

This classic 'frasier' character is returning - and she's bringing a 'crazy ex-girlfriend' star with her, 'family portrait' review: a haunting debut teeters on the edge of horror before diving in.

IDW has announced a new era of the Star Trek comics with the debut of Star Trek #1 during San Diego Comic Con. Debuting in October, the comic features art by critically acclaimed Ramon Rosanas ( Marvel’s Star Wars, Ant-Man ), and scripts by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing , the creative minds behind Star Trek: Year Five .

Star Trek #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek universe. It brings together characters from across the galaxy and across eras and variations of the beloved franchise—who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods. “Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing said, adding,

We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before—an Avengers-style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry ’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.

The comic is set in 2378, where Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus. Sisko witnesses the unthinkable, someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly–until Next Generation , Voyager , and Deep Space Nine came along!” Rosanas revealed. The scribe further shared his excitement saying, “Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

Star Trek #1 will be available with eight variant covers including Cover A by series artist Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey , Cover C by David Aja , Cover D by Rachael Stott , and a sketch Cover E, as well as three additional covers by Rosanas and Francesco Francavilla . Furthermore, a Star Trek #1 prelude story from Rosanas, Kelly, and Lanzing will come out in September’s highly-anticipated Star Trek #400 , a monumental anthology issue!

Elaborating on the themes of the new comic Kelly said, “Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever.” Further adding, “We’re both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.” Editor Heather Antos added ,

Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future, of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.

Star Trek #1 will debut in October, meanwhile, check out the new covers below, as well as our interview with Captain Pike himself, Anson Mount :

IDW has revealed Star Trek comics are getting a bold new direction with a new Star Trek #1 by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with artist Ramon Rosanas. The ongoing series promises to span the “far reaches” of the Star Trek multiverse bringing together characters from different areas and eras. Their hope? To defeat a mysterious murderer of the gods. The story will be a prelude to Rosanas, Lanzing and Kelly’s Star Trek #400 anthology issue.

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly–until Next Generation, Voyager, and  Deep Space Nine  came along!” Rosanas enthuses. “After that, I didn’t miss a single episode of those three series’ each week. Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

So what’s Star Trek #1 about?

Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

“Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing says. “We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before—an  Avengers -style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.”

IDW boldy goes in new direction with new 'Star Trek' #1 in October 2022

“Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future,” says editor Heather Antos, “of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.”

The comic will feature eight variant covers including Cover A by series artist Ramon Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey, Cover C by David Aja (TBC), Cover D by Rachael Stott, and a sketch Cover E, as well as three additional retailer incentive covers by Rosanas and Francesco Francavilla.

This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every  Star Trek  series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.” “ Star Trek  has always been about telling stories of a better future,” says editor  Heather Antos,  “of hope for humanity. Benjamin Sisko returns as a god to begin IDW's bold new era of 'Star Trek' comics

A new "Star Trek" series written by fan favorites Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing arrives in October

Star Trek #1 Prelude Art

The "Star Trek" universe has never seen anything like this before.

Breaking news out of this week's San Diego Comic-Con is coming hot and heavy, and that means IDW Publishing has just announced word of a rebooted flagship "Star Trek" comic book series headed to our corner of the Milky Way this fall.

Arriving in October and written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing ( "Star Trek: Year Five" ) with illustrations by artist Ramon Rosanas (Marvel's "Star Wars , " "Ant-Man"), IDW Publishing 's "Star Trek #1" will navigate a thrilling adventure storyline that streaks across the cosmos joined by treasure of characters from throughout the "Star Trek" universe who must join forces to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods.

According to the official IDW synopsis , the series will bring back Benjamin Sisko, most well-known as the commanding officer of Deep Space 9 in the "Star Trek" television series of the same name.

"It's stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent," IDW representatives wrote. "But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus , he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of 'Trek' can stop them."

A page from the comic book "Star Trek #1" showing several panels: a green, ringed planet; a close-up of that planet's rings; and a single character with completely white eyes gazing up at the planet.

"Benjamin Sisko is back!" Lanzing said in an IDW press release. "We're immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before — an Avengers-style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry's creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible."

To get fans totally psyched for this fresh ongoing title, a special "Star Trek #1" prelude story from Kelly, Lanzing, and Rosanas will be included in September's highly-anticipated "Star Trek: #400" anthology issue.

Several Star Trek characters stand in a transporter, a fictional teleportation device.

Lanzing's longtime writing partner, Collin Kelly, is equally enthused about this all-enveloping "Star Trek" saga.

"Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever," Kelly said. "We're both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga."

As a sci-fi loving child, artist Ramon Rosanas watched reruns of the classic "Star Trek" series endlessly until "Next Generation," "Voyager," and "Deep Space Nine" came along later.

"After that, I didn't miss a single episode of those three series each week," Rosanas added. "Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me."

A lone figure stands on a small asteroid, gazing up at a solar system above him.

IDW's "Star Trek #1" will strike comic shops and online retailers this October with eight variant covers including Cover A by series artist Ramon Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey, Cover C by David Aja, Cover D by Rachael Stott, and a raw sketch Cover E in addition to three other retailer incentive covers by Rosanas and legendary Eisner-winning artist Francesco Francavilla .

Star Trek (1984—1988)

The main DC Comics Star Trek title was published in two volumes, comprising 136 issues, 9 annuals, and a number of special issues. Two volumes were also published based upon Star Trek: the Next Generation , plus several mini-series that linked TOS and TNG.

Original characters in Volume 1 included the bigoted Native American Ensign William Bearclaw, Ensign Nancy Bryce, the bird-like Dr. Chu-Sa, Lt. Commander Maria Morelli, Ensign Elizabeth Sherwood, and the Klingons Konom and Bernie. There were also appearances by Arex and M'Ress, previously seen only in the animated series based on Star Trek. It begins after the events of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was first published in February 1984.

Section 31: Everything We Know About Star Treks First Streaming Movie

  • Michelle Yeoh stars in Star Trek: Section 31, a first-of-its-kind movie for the Star Trek franchise on Paramount+.
  • Section 31, a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery, delves into secret ops agency history in a unique storyline.
  • Set in the early 24th century, Section 31 features a diverse cast and promises a mysterious plot with time travel elements.

Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh stars in Star Trek: Section 31 , and here's everything we know about Star Trek 's first made-for-streaming movie. Section 31 is written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. A spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery , Yeoh reprises her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou , the former ruler of the Mirror Universe's Terran Empire who joined Section 31 in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Star Trek: Section 31 was originally planned as an ongoing series spinning off from Star Trek: Discovery , from a suggestion by Michelle Yeoh. In January 2019, development began on a Star Trek: Section 31 series, which was scheduled to film from May to November 2020. Yeoh's character, Emperor Georgiou, was written out of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, to segue her into Section 31 . However, the COVID-19 pandemic halted Section 31 's production. Yeoh's availability also impacted Section 31 , especially when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All At Once . However, Yeoh used her Oscar clout to put Section 31 into production, this time as a feature film to stream on Paramount+.

Im Excited About Whats Next For Star Trek

Star Trek: Discovery is over, and soon Lower Decks will end, but even with fewer shows, there is still lots of exciting stuff ahead for Star Trek.

Section 31 Is Star Treks First Streaming Movie

Star trek movies enter the streaming era.

Star Trek: Section 31 is Star Trek' s first movie made-for-streaming on Paramount+. Section 31 is also the first Star Trek movie made since Star Trek Beyond premiered in theaters in 2016 . Section 31 is also said to be a very different type of Star Trek story, which is fitting since there's no indication it will be set on a Starfleet starship or space station, and will delve into the murky history of the United Federation of Planets' top secret black ops agency,

If Star Trek: Section 31 is a success on Paramount+, it opens the door for a sequel continuing the adventures of Emperor Georgiou. Section 31 becoming a hit also means the two-hour format for Star Trek on Paramount+ becomes a viable option for future projects. New Star Trek concepts or perhaps other Star Trek fans want, like the Star Trek: Picard continuation dubbed Star Trek: Legacy , could become made-for-streaming movies on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Section 31s Cast & Story

Section 31 includes new faces and star trek legacy characters.

Fittingly, Star Trek: Section 31 's story is shrouded in mystery. It has been revealed, however, that at least part of Section 31 takes place in Star Trek 's "lost era" of the early 24th century before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 also involves time travel since Emperor Georgiou jumps back 800 years from Star Trek: Discovery' s 32nd century. The official synopsis of Star Trek: Section 31 is as follows:

In Star Trek: Section 31 , Emperor Philippa Georgiou, joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.

Joining Michelle Yeoh in Star Trek: Section 31 's cast are Sam Richardson, Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Rob Kazinsky, Sven Ruygrok, Humberly Gonzalez, James Hiroyuki Liao, Joe Pingue, Miku Martineau, and Augusto Bitter. Although no details about the characters they play have been released, one intriguing aspect that has been revealed is that Rohl plays the younger version of Rachell Garrett. Garrett is the doomed future Captain of the USS Enterprise-C , who was played by Tricia O'Neill in the Star Trek: The Next Generation classic, "Yesterday's Enterprise".

When Star Trek: Section 31 Will Premiere

Section 31 is awaiting a release date from paramount+.

Star Trek: Section 31 does not yet have a release date from Paramount+. Section 31 will likely premiere in 2025, although there's a chance it could also drop late in 2024 after the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks ends. Section 31 wrapped filming in March, with cast members from Star Trek: Strange New World s joining Section 31 's actors at their wrap party in Toronto. The status of Star Trek: Section 31 's post-production is not known, but the movie will be locked for its eventual premiere on Paramount+.

A lot is riding on Star Trek: Section 31 as Star Trek's first streaming movie.

Star Trek: Section 31 not premiering until 2025 makes since Paramount+ lacks Star Trek content next year. The only other wrapped Star Trek project is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which will likely also premiere on Paramount+ in 2025. Star Trek 's next series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , doesn't start filming until fall 2024 for a potential 2026 release. This means a lot is riding on Star Trek: Section 31 as Star Trek 's first streaming movie, but fans have already learned never to underestimate Michelle Yeoh's Emperor Georgiou.
