Saint John – New Brunswick

Welcome to Saint John, the gateway to the stunning Bay of Fundy. Explore the charming streets of the historic Uptown area, visit the famous Reversing Falls, or take a scenic drive along the Fundy Coastal Route. Indulge in fresh seafood, immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene, and witness the dramatic tides that make Saint John truly unique.

Saint John, New Brunswick is located on the Bay of Fundy, along Canada's eastern seaboard. This small city is home to about 130,000 residents and embodies Canadian Maritime hospitality, and has more than 400 years worth of French and British influences. Originally a shipbuilding hub primarily due to its ice-free harbor in winter, Saint John continues to thrive in the shipping and fishing industries. The city was virtually destroyed by a fire in 1877, and the Victorian-era rebuilding is still seen throughout Uptown Saint John with its historic churches and brick pathways. Uptown Saint John, where the cruise terminal is located and considered the city center, is home to many unique shops and boutiques, funky art galleries and cafes, and you'll often be serenaded by street musicians with a bohemian flare.

While the city of Saint John has a old-world quality about it, the Bay of Fundy is an attraction in its own right. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Bay is home to the highest tides in the world. If you're lucky enough to be there as the tide comes in, you'll see the waters rise as much as a 4-story building! Most people can see one low and one high tide during the daytime, and it produces a fabulous experience which isn't to be missed - the Reversing Rapids.

There is additional cruise docking at The Diamond Jubilee Cruise terminal next door and at Long Wharf which is further into the harbor and also in the downtown area.

The AREA506 Waterfront Container Village opened on the Saint John, New Brunswick waterfront in June 2022. You can walk on the harbor Passage from both cruise docking locations to the Reversing Falls. Taxis in Saint John are not metered. There is a zoned fare system--be sure to ask how much the ride will cost. Another quirk of this taxi system is that you do not necessarily have exclusive use of the taxi. The driver is allowed to pick up and drop off another fare while you are in the taxi.

Pick up a map at the Welcome Kiosk in the ship terminal.

Within the Uptown it is possible to travel on foot between the City Market, Brunswick Square Mall, Market Square, the Canada Games Aquatic center, Mercantile center and harbor Station via underground and pedway connections without venturing outside. (The "Inside Connection".) This is very useful during the winter. During the rest of the year, Uptown Saint John also offers a very pleasant and fairly accessible walking experience, with clear, well-maintained sidewalks and crosswalks, and fairly straightforward navigation. (Unlike many older cities, Saint John's Uptown is laid out in a simple, grid design.)

The city of Saint John offers so many events that it is hard to chose where to begin.

The Reversing Falls is a one-of-a-kind natural attraction in the heart of the city, where during high tide (which is the highest in the world) the rapids of the Saint John River actually reverse direction. Bus #1 leaves from City Hall but you will need to take #2 for the return trip.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

St. John is very walkable. The climate controlled Pedway system is easy to follow.

The most popular excursion is St. Martin's (50 minutes from Saint John). It is a fishing village that experiences some of the highest tides in the world, and if the excursion is timed properly, you can "walk the ocean floor" and experience a sea cave. St. Andrew's by the Sea (70 minutes from Saint John) is a historic summer resort town with gift shops, museums, galleries and the fabulous 27 acre Kingsbrae Garden. In Saint John, horse drawn trolley tours of the historic area are popular.

Hop on/off buses : The Big Pink Buses will follow three routes throughout the city: A - All about Town, R - Reversing Falls and T - Top of the Market. Tour tickets purchased are good for all three routes and will run continuously throughout the day. A portion of your fare goes to breast research. $40 for an adult and $30 for a child.

There is an Avis car rental is close to the dock.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

Hopewell Rocks National Park . Part of the Hopewell Rocks experience is a beach walk along the ocean’s floor among the flowerpot-like formations. Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations are covered in water twice a day. However, it is possible to view the formations from ground level at low tide.

Shopping and Food

City Market : the Saint John City Market offers a unique shopping experience for locals and visitors alike. Nowhere else in Saint John can you experience a traditional "farmers market" while shopping for such a wide selection of goods and services.

Brunswick Square is a 3-level shopping complex with a wide variety of stores.

Canadian dollar, but USD widely accepted even by local transit.

You will find ATMs in many grocery stores, malls, airports and so on, and most are linked to the international networks, the most common being Cirrus, Plus, Star and Maestro. You can also grab cash from an ATM if you use a major credit card although this method tends to be more expensive because, in addition to a service fee, you'll be charged interest immediately.

One Trip at a Time

While not as busy as the nearby port of Halifax , the port of Saint John, New Brunswick is scheduled to welcome 80+ cruise ships from 14 cruise lines during the 2024 cruise season!

Along with many ships that have visited in past cruise seasons, ten cruises are making their inaugural visits to Saint John in 2024. Those ships are the Island Princess, Silver Shadow, Volendam, Nautica, Norwegian Sky, Seven Seas Grandeur, Norwegian Jade, Viking Neptune, Spirit of Adventure , and Azamara Journey . We sailed on the Norwegian Sky in January 2024 in the Caribbean – maybe next time it’ll be to Saint John!

The first ship arrives on May 8th, with a few more visiting in June through August. The majority of cruise ship visits (85%!) will be in September through November as many ships call Saint John to offer passengers the chance to see the stunning autumn leaves in Canada’s Maritime provinces.

Both of these modern cruise ship terminals are located right in the heart of Saint John and give passengers direct ship-to-shore access (and Wifi!) to easily explore the city. The third cruise berth, Long Wharf Terminal (LW), will be used for a few ship calls and it is only a short walk to the city centre.

Below you will find the complete Saint John, New Brunswick cruise ship schedule for 2024 that displays the name of the ship, the cruise operator, the date, and arrival/departure times for the ships that are scheduled to be in port.

For a scenic view of the river flow, head to Reversing Falls Bridge, which looks out over an area where the river narrows and flows through a deep gorge.

You can also see the Reversing Falls Rapids by visiting the Skywalk Saint John, which lets you view the largest whirlpool created by the Reversing Falls Rapids on a stainless steel and glass skywalk. Culture & History of the Saint John Cruise Port

Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada. During the reign of King George III of England, the municipality was created by royal charter in 1785, which came after the partitioning of the colony of Nova Scotia in 1784. Saint John was originally supposed to be the capital of New Brunswick, but was vetoed by King George III (the capital is in Fredericton).

Not long after, Saint John became known for its shipbuilding industry, which helped the town to prosper.

Today, the port of Saint John is Canada’s third largest port by tonnage. In addition to cruising, the other most frequent cargo ships that visit Saint John carry dry and liquid bulk, break bulk, and containers. For several decades around the turn of the 21st century, Saint John’s population was in decline, but it is starting to boom again; in 2016, it became the second most populous city in New Brunswick.

Saint John Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships typically dock at Port Saint John, which is conveniently located next to the popular area of uptown Saint John. The Saint John cruise port is home to two terminals: Marco Polo and the newer Diamond Jubilee. From Port Saint John, it’s a short walk along Lower Water Street to the city center.

On days when three ships are in port, the third ship docks at Long Wharf Terminal also located in the heart of the city.

Transportation in Saint John

Taxis are available by the cruise port and are located outside the exit of the cruise terminal building.

Local public transportation buses are also available. When figuring out routes, it’s helpful to remember that routes 1 and 2 run east to west and vice versa, while routes 3 and 4 run from the north side of town down south and onto to the east side and vice versa.

Souvenirs from Moosehead Brewery and Java Moose Coffee Roasters are popular items for drink and food lovers.

Cruises from/to Saint John, New Brunswick

Saint john, new brunswick cruise port.

  • A green oasis near uptown, you'll find the free-of-charge Irving Nature Park between the Bay of Fundy and a salt marsh, whose focus is on protecting the environment and the province's rich marine ecosystems. Not only can you hang out with seals and seabirds, but check out the squirrel houses where the cute critters watch passers-by.
  • This is an area serious about its maritime roots, as a visit to the Saint John City Market will prove. The roof is shaped like an inverted ship's hull, and the fascination doesn't end there. Your senses will be delighted by a plethora of produce, cheeses, flowers, and a dried seaweed called dulse.
  • The New Brunswick Museum is Canada's oldest continuing museum and is a great place to while away the hours while learning about art and history. Young visitors will enjoy the interactive displays in Discovery Gallery (although the adults will like them, too).
  • Visit Fallsview Park and the Reversing Rapids, the amazing phenomenon that results from a confluence of the highest tides in the world (from the Bay of Fundy) and the origination point (the Saint John River). When the two forces meet, the resulting high tides dramatically reverse in flow.

City panorama of Saint John, New Brunswick

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Saint John, on the southern coast of New Brunswick, is Canada’s oldest incorporated city as well as the only city on the Bay of Fundy.

Give your stroll through uptown Saint John a little focus by taking the self-guided Loyalist Trail walking tour, which visits historic attractions like the 1784 Burial Grounds, the 1876 Old City Market, a general store and the Jewish Historical Museum. The New Brunswick Museum, also along the Loyalist Trail, tells the story of the town and exhibits cover some of its natural history, too, with an 80,000-year-old mastodon skeleton. The Martello Tower has been part of Saint John's identity since it was erected for the War of 1812; it was even used to house prisoners during World War I.

The most exciting part of your trip to Saint John may be your chance to view the point at which the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River collide: the Reversing Falls Rapids. If simply observing the churning waves and whirlpool is not enough, ride a zip line over the waters for added thrills.
