As you see from other reviews, there are a lot of 5 stars here. This for a very good reason. Savor Napa Wine Tours are one of the best in the area. Carl picked us up from our hotel in a large Mecedes SUV. He provides cold water and a very comfortable ride. Carl can assist with winery selections, or you can select your favorites as well. He is friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about the Napa - Sonoma region. He allows you to take your time and enjoy the wine tasting experience, without the headache of driving around. I will be looking forward to using Savor Napa Wine Tours for my next visit.

We found this company through recommendation. Carl and his staff definitely didn't disappoint. Carl handpicked the wineries, called and setup the very private wine tasting appointments. We went to three wineries. Carl was knowledgeable about the wineries that we went to. He was professional and courteous and he was following CoVid policies. He had hand sanitizers in the car and wore a mask. It was for a birthday and Carl and company made it a great experience!! Would love to do it again very soon. Aside from all the knowledge and professionalism, he's your driver so you can drink and drink and not have to worry about dri Thank you for making this a truly memorable experience!

I highly recommend choosing Carl as everyone's tour guide in Napa. I wouldn't know my way around otherwise. He's extremely knowledgeable of the wineries, especially all the places we visited. During my trip, I told Carl that I was food poisoned from two days prior in San Francisco and Carl made sure that I stayed hydrated the entire time. He also called our reservations to let them know we 'll be running a little behind because my movement that day was slower than normal. Napa Valley Nanny referred us to Savor Napa Valley Tours and it was the best decision we made during our San Francisco and Napa vacation. Before our trip, Carl and I discussed the type of wines we liked. I emailed Carl a list of wineries and restaurants and he also gave some of his recommendations. We were able to come up with an itinerary and Carl frequently reached out to me before the trip to ensure our schedule remained the same. During our trip, Carl picked us up at the hotel and met us at the front desk. At the wineries, Carl stayed in his car while we were doing wine tasting. He had umbrellas ready whenever we were getting ready to leave. He made sure that I didn't feel worst. He was very patient and understanding. He's very soft spoken, so a couple of times we had him repeat what he said. He's very nice and will repeat whatever we asked him. He really knows the history and the current owners at these wineries. He navigated us there without losing time and is very good with directions. What makes him different from any other chauffeurs is that he really knows the type of wines these wineries carry, he's able to describe them like a true wine connoisseur because he did his research for us. Try Savor Napa Valley Tours and you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for your review, Sya N.! It was my pleasure to customize your Napa winery tour, and glad you were able to enjoy yourselves despite other challenges! I enjoyed being your helpful guide and look forward to your return to discover more "hidden gems" in wine country!

Carl was amazing and so knowledgeable of the area, wine and best places to go! We told him what we were looking for and he delivered above and beyond. It was our first time in Napa and he made it so memorable. If you're looking for a driver in Napa look no further...Call Carl, you'll be in great hands :) Thanks, Carl!

Photo of At O.

We were able to book Carl via reference from another tour driver which made feel super comfortable as one would not recommend the other if they make them look bad for the recommendations. Needless to say, the recommendation was awesome and Carl did an amazing job at helping us with our tour schedule. We already had two winery tours schedule so he researched an additional stop to add on to the trip. He gave us options and let us choose. We ended up at this beautiful small winery/vineyard. It was so perfect to go to a nice private place in between the craziness of the large vineyards. Carl was on top of keeping in touch with us before the trip. He is incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the area.

Photo of Annie P.

Carl was amazing from start to finish! He was so accommodating with our location and schedule(had a baby that we had to work everything around) and he was very pleasant to be with for 5-6 hours! I found him through the nanny service as this business is new for him, but you would never know! He's lived in the area forever and made great suggestions. He's very knowledgable but he also lets you enjoy your time with your friends/family and doesn't overdo anything by talking too much. He also brought delicious snacks for us to enjoy I between vineyards...amazing olives, cheese, and crackers with water! I would recommend him to anyone!!

My wife and I came out to the Napa Valley recently for the first time for our honeymoon. After trying to do a lot of research on places to visit and tours to use, I came across Savor Napa Valley Tours. Carl won me over with his prompt response and attention to detail and great customer service. His rates were great too. The response time and great communication from Carl set him apart quickly from some of the larger companies I had spoken to. The tour was great also. Carl catered to our likes and interests and we had a fantastic time at all the tastings and tours that Carl arranged for us. He has a good knowledge of the area and all of his expertise was much appreciated for a couple of first timers to the Napa Valley. I would definitely use Carl again on future visits (and I hope there is many!!).

Napa or Sonoma: which California wine region offers superior sipping?

Barbara Noe Kennedy

Anyone who appreciates fine wine is spoiled for choice in California .

Along its long coast, unique microclimates make for designated wine regions that produce vintages famous worldwide. In-the-know tasters might seek out lesser-visited destinations like Paso Robles near San Luis Obispo , or the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara . But among connoisseurs of California reds, whites and bubblies, two regions stand apart: Napa and Sonoma.

Both an easy drive from  San Francisco , each of these counties has their ardent supporters. Including a pair of expert writers whom we’ve asked to make the case for each.

Hot air balloon floats over a vineyard in Napa Valley, California, USA

Next time, make it Napa

Tamara Gane lives within driving distance of Napa and has visited dozens of times for work and pleasure. On each visit, she makes a point to visit a new winery. She only has 400 to go.

Napa rocked the world when a Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay took the top prizes for red and white at the 1976 Paris Wine Tasting (better known as the “Judgment of Paris”). How did Sonoma wineries do? Not one of its wines was even selected to compete. This isn’t to suggest Sonoma County doesn’t have excellent wines; it does. But Napa put California wine on the map – and it’s Napa that continues to blaze a trail for the wine industry today.

Napa has always been a groundbreaker. Three of the five oldest operating wineries in California are located in Napa Valley – and one of them, Charles Krug Winery , opened the state’s first tasting room in 1882. In 1968, Napa became the USA’s first officially designated Agricultural Preserve . Napa Valley was the first American Viticulture Area designated in California in 1981.

Sonoma, it seems, is forever following in Napa’s footsteps – and that’s okay. Someone has to lead.

A man bicycling on a hilly road in Napa, California, USA

Despite its outsize reputation, Napa County is just 35 miles long and 5 miles at its widest point, which means Napa’s wineries – a staggering 475 in total – are easily accessible. Sonoma County, by contrast, is nearly twice as large, and has fewer wineries. While I’m all for a scenic drive, I don’t necessarily want to combine one with wine tasting. (Once, I was lost on a winding Sonoma road without GPS or cell service and had to knock on a stranger’s door for directions – frustrating, to say the least. Although in Sonoma’s defense, the stranger was very nice.)

A common knock on Napa is that it’s too expensive. The valley is indeed saturated with luxury experiences. Yet critics overlook the fact that pricey activities are merely one option for visitors in a position to splurge. The average standard wine tasting fee in Napa Valley is $40 per person – and there are a host of wineries that charge much less. Tastings at Housley Napa Valley and Rombauer Vineyards , for example, will run you $25 per person. Nichelini Family Winery charges $30 per person – then credits the fee toward any wine purchase of $60 or more. And for every $1000-a-night luxury hotel room here, you’ll find dozens of reasonably priced alternatives. In short, Napa is still an approachable destination. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t spend as much time there as I do.

If you are looking to indulge on the high end, make a reservation at one (or many) of the 13 Michelin-rated restaurants in Napa Valley (more than twice as many as you’ll find in much larger Sonoma). For scores of travelers, dining in a restaurant like Kenzo or The French Laundry is a bucket-list experience akin to seeing the Great Wall of China or the Taj Mahal.

Miriam Puentes pours Paula’s Rosé at Honrama Ranch, Napa, California

Luxury winery experiences are no less worthy of your dollars, with 95+-point wines practically springing from the landscape. Well-heeled travelers gladly pay $150–$350 a person for a tasting, before they retire to a suite at Poetry Inn that’s as big as my house. Are these experiences accessible to everyone? Unfortunately, no. But for those who can afford them, they’re simply unforgettable.

Napa has about 11% fewer rainy days than Sonoma, with generally warmer temperatures. Taking advantage of the climate, I like to start my Napa days with a stroll along the Napa Valley Vine Trail or a mud bath in Calistoga . Sunny days mean tastings on the patio at wineries like Bouchane Vineyards or Cliff Lede Vineyards . Maybe it’s just me, but even the most elegant glass of wine feels even more elevated when I’m watching a hawk circling vineyards and undulating hills.

I’ll meet you there next time.

Savor sensational Sonoma

Travel writer  Barbara Noe Kennedy has written about destinations, history, culture, art and more. Her tastiest assignments? Whenever she covers wine country.

When it comes to California’s wine country, Napa’s legendary wines, flashy wineries and trendy restaurants tend to hog the limelight. And don’t get me wrong – the praise is well deserved. But having grown up in the Bay Area and visited both Napa and Sonoma since I was little, I have to say that the latter has always been my favorite. It can go up against Napa any day for its excellent wines. It’s also friendlier, prettier, more diverse – and less expensive.

Let’s go right to those costs. Napa is downright steep: you’ll pay anywhere from $45 up to $200 (!) in Napa for five wine-tasting pours. In Sonoma, a just-as-amazing experience costs $25 to $65 (with a few exceptions, of course). Accommodations are also more reasonable in Sonoma, especially if you stay in a place like Santa Rosa or Petaluma, outside the main hubs. Overall, you should count on spending less.

Three older women hiking in the mountains near Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California, USA

But it’s also about the experience. Sonoma is friendlier and more down-to-earth than Napa, and you don’t need to be a wine expert or a millionaire to feel like you belong. Sonoma’s wineries tend to be smaller and more rustic, offering a more intimate wine-tasting experience; you might even be greeted by the winery owner. That rarely happens in Napa anymore. Part of this is because most of the Napa wineries are more commercial, having shed their family origins – while Sonoma’s wineries remain family affairs. Chuck Wagner, the owner of Caymus , told me that this is the reason he recently moved his family operations out of Napa Valley. He’s fed up with the way things work there these days.

By the way, in Napa, you’re not allowed to bring food onto most winery premises – this is based on some ancient law – whereas in Sonoma, you can. Pack a picnic.

Speaking of food, Napa is constantly lauded for its chi-chi cuisine – yet Sonoma has its own extraordinary dining scene. The tasting menu at SingleThread Farm and Restaurant in Healdsburg easily competes with any of Napa’s most exclusive spots. That said, Sonoma’s restaurants have a more laid-back, unpretentious, farm-to-table vibe – almost all with superb California cuisine.

Sonoma is prettier, too. While Napa is one long, flat valley – which gets very brown in summer – Sonoma comprises varied landscapes of rugged green peaks and tucked-away valleys, sprinkled with small towns. Napa’s one main road (Rte 29) makes wineries a little easier to access, true – but it becomes super congested with cars in summer. In Sonoma, visitors can spread out, exploring hidden corners – and wineries – without the crowds. Some of my favorite niches include Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley.

Kayaks, canoes and other water craft in the Russian River, near Guerneville, Sonoma County, California, USA

The towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma have spots that match Napa’s high-end wine-country aesthetic. (Check out Montage Healdsburg to see what I mean.) Yet Sonoma offers more variety – that again! – which makes things more interesting overall. You also have funky Guerneville, breezy Bodega Bay on the Pacific, bohemian Occidental, sprawling Santa Rosa, apple-blessed Sebastopol and many more towns. And all the while, you’ll be in or near one of Sonoma’s 19 distinct wine regions, where tasting opportunities are always front of mind.

The beyond-wine experiences are simply incomparable in Sonoma, especially for lovers of the outdoors. Here, you can walk along a Pacific beach (the county has 55-plus miles of coastline), eat Dungeness crab at a seafood shack, hike through cloud-shrouded redwoods, bike vineyard-edged roads and stand-up paddle board or kayak on the Russian River. Try doing all that in Napa’s single valley.

So my answer to the perennial “Napa or Sonoma?” question will always be Sonoma – hands-down. It’s has intimate, family-run wineries, and it’s filled with variety, in the wines as well as in the landscapes and local vibes. All for fewer dollars.

What’s not to love?

Since we all know Sonoma is the next destination on your to-go list, check out my first timer's guide to Sonoma County.

Best Winery Tour (2023) July 21, 2023

There's nothing like getting a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process (while tasting along the way) to hone both your appreciation and your palate. To find the best experiences, we asked a panel of wine industry experts to nominate their preferred winery tours throughout the country, then readers voted for their favorites.

Here are the 10 best winery tours in the United States.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery

No. 8: Gundlach Bundschu Winery - Sonoma, California

Neal Family Vineyards, a third-generation family-owned estate, provides a private visit that includes a tour of the winery's caves and vineyard on stunning Howell Mountain. No. 5: Cline Family Cellars - Sonoma, California

Visitors to Cline Family Cellars on Saturdays and Sundays can enjoy a guided tour of the grounds and winery, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the sustainable winemaking process. The 30-minute tour includes a glass of wine to enjoy as you stroll the grounds.

Merriam Vineyards

No. 4: Merriam Vineyards - Healdsburg, California

There are high remarks for organically farmed, estate-centered Merriam Vineyards in Sonoma's Russian River Valley. Expert Ziggy Eschliman puts it this way: "I can’t say enough good things about this winery. There are lots of new options for touring and areas to hike too." A seated tasting with a selection of single-vineyard wines is offered daily.

Benziger Family Winery

No. 3: Benziger Family Winery - Glen Ellen, California

Visitors to Benziger Family Winery have five tour and tasting options to choose from. The exclusive Tribute Estate Tour takes visitors behind the scenes for a close-up look at the biodynamic vineyards and winemaking facilities. Visitors can also take a tractor tram tour of the vineyards to learn more about biodynamic farming.

Eberle Winery

No. 2: Eberle Winery - Paso Robles, California

Eberle is an essential part of Paso Robles wine history, says 10Best contributor Jill Barth. A tour of caves on the property has earned high recommendations from visitors. Offered along with seated tastings, this look at the 16,000-plus square feet of underground caves is a unique way to experience one of the pioneering producers of the region.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

No. 1: Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery - Hammondsport, New York

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, located in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York, offers an 1886 Food and Wine Experience in which guests partake in a guided viticultural or cellar tour followed by a seated wine tasting.  This experience is available from May through October and is reservation only.  For a less in-depth endeavor, seated wine tastings are offered year-round.

2. Visit a Beautiful Vineyard for Wine Tasting

When visiting this area you must check out some of the most beautiful wineries in Napa . Napa Valley is made up of five distinct regions, each creating different blends of wine from a crisp chardonnay to an old vine red zinfandel. Some of the vineyards have been growing their vines since the 1800’s, and most of the wineries continue to be family-owned and operated.

From towering castles to bird’s eye views of rolling vineyards, each winery has a unique landscape to offer. Round Pond Estate, Castello di Amorosa, and Robert Biale Vineyards are a few wineries not to miss when visiting Napa Valley.

3. Enjoy a Picnic in a Gorgeous Setting

The V. Sattui winery in St. Helena in the valley offers several different options and price points for indoor and outdoor wine tastings. The artisan deli and marketplace located on-site has everything needed to create the perfect picnic.

Pick up local cheeses, meats and bread at the deli, grab a bottle of wine, and enjoy an al fresco lunch on the expansive lawn beneath towering shade trees.

4. Kick Off the Day with Bubbles

Mumm Napa is one of the leading producers of sparkling wines in the United States. Choose a flight of different bubbly flavors and enjoy sipping out on the terrace overlooking the acres of fields below.

5. Take a Hike

Napa Valley is known for producing wine but it is also home to some of the best hikes in California, from quick morning treks to all day adventures.

Boasting incredible scenery, picturesque views, stunning landscapes, and challenging trails, Napa is a hiking paradise. Some of the best hikes include the Skyline Wilderness Park, the Oat Hill Mine Trail, Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park.

6. Relax in a Hot Spring

The Calistoga Hot Springs are naturally occurring geothermal pools in the northern section of the valley offering visitors a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.

Flowing deep beneath the earth’s surface the waters become enriched with minerals and nutrients, making them beneficial for skin and overall health. Many of the hot springs are open to the public and offer various amenities such as spa services, private pools, and mud baths.

7. Visit one of the Napa Cult Wineries

Delving into the realm of Top Napa Valley Cult Wines unveils the enigmatic allure of what defines a “cult” wine or winery. The term “cult wine,” which emerged in the 1900s, initially characterized Napa Valley’s Cabernet Sauvignon offerings that commanded exorbitant prices. These wines stand as paragons of opulence, renowned for their steep cost and capacity for extended aging.

Distinguished by their exceedingly limited production, these wines often manifest in such minuscule quantities that their acquisition becomes a formidable endeavor, frequently demanding substantial financial investment. Yet, connoisseurs and collectors alike recognize the intrinsic value within, justifying the lofty price tag. Among the pinnacle cult wineries, several luminaries emerge:

A paramount mention is incomplete without acknowledging the progenitor, Screaming Eagle, which effectively shattered the $50 price threshold that had previously encircled Napa wines before the 1990s.

Opus One, a collaborative triumph between the visionary Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the illustrious Robert Mondavi, stands as a testament to their winemaking prowess. Its inception traces back to four decades ago, in 1979. This winery’s hallmark is an exquisitely crafted Bordeaux-style Californian wine, predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon interwoven with nuanced proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. A testament to luxury, this cult elixir commands an average price surpassing $400.

Harlan Estate, founded by Bill Harlan, embarks on a mission to encapsulate the essence of a true “California First Growth” wine, akin to the esteemed Grand Crus of Burgundy. Nurtured by the wisdom of Robert Mondavi and the tutelage of Europe’s preeminent winemakers, Harlan Estate’s wines embody an artful convergence of vision and terroir. While the typical cost orbits around $1,000, exceptional vintages ascend to heights exceeding $1,000, exemplifying their rare distinction.

Eminent wine critic Robert Parker ardently describes Harlan Estate wine as “the single most profound red wine, not only in California but in the world,” underscoring the wine’s standing as a pinnacle of vinicultural achievement.

Best Places to Eat in Napa

Visiting Napa Valley is not complete without enjoying some of the many delectable dining options available here. The region boasts more than 100 restaurants, many of which have been awarded Michelin stars. Visitors can savor signature dishes prepared by award-winning chefs while experiencing the idyllic surroundings of the area.

8. Start with a Quick Breakfast at the Bouchon Bakery

If the line leading out of the front door tells you anything, it is that the Bouchon Bakery is the place to go for breakfast and craft coffee in Napa Valley. Located in Yountville, the bakery is known for freshly baked French pastries and café au lait. It is the perfect starting place for a day in Napa!

9. Enjoy a Michelin-Star Lunch at Auberge du Soleil

The terrace of the Auberge du Soleil Resort is a beautiful outdoor space offering panoramic views of the valley. From the shaded and cool seating areas in the summer to heaters and fireplaces for cooler evenings, it is easy to pass several hours in this comfortable yet upscale setting. 10. If You’re Feeling Fancy, Head to the French Laundry

The French Laundry will undoubtably produce a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. Boasting three Michelin stars, the French Laundry specializes in contemporary French cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients of the highest quality. Located in the heart of Napa Valley, this restaurant books out well in advance and reservations are highly recommended.

11. Or Grab a Bite at Oxbow Public Market

The Oxbow Marketplace is home to a variety of specialty vendors including gourmet chocolates and cheeses, vintage kitchenware, and chic clothing shops. The Public Market also features a diverse range of culinary experiences from fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas, and gourmet burgers to tacos made from unique and locally-sourced ingredients and craft beer.

Day Trip Ideas from Napa Valley

12. drive to the california coast.

In the summer months Napa can become pretty warm during the day. This coupled with cool nights is one of the reasons the grapes grown here do so well! Unfortunately it can be a little uncomfortable to drink wine in the heat.

A day trip to the coast is just an hour away but can be up to 30 degrees cooler! Watch the harbor seals playing in the Pacific Ocean and feel all your worries melt away.

One popular destination for those driving from Napa to the coast is Bodega Bay, which is famous for its rugged coastline and picturesque fishing village. Plan ahead and pick up fresh sandwiches, snacks and drinks at Duncans Mills General Store on your way to the coast so you can enjoy the whole day at the beach.

Or get freshly-caught oysters at the Hog Island Oyster Company after enjoying a glass of chilled wine at Sonoma Coast Vineyards overlooking the bay!

13. Check Out the Neighboring Sonoma Valley

Although these two wine regions are neighbors, they evoke very different vibes for visitors. While Napa has upscale restaurants and higher pricetags, Sonoma is more laid-back and relaxed. Because of the proximity to the Pacific Ocean Sonoma Valley has a mild climate with cool breezes that help balance out the hot days.

A top place to stay in the Sonoma Valley is the Beltane Ranch, a historic estate dating back to the late 19 th century. Perfect for guests seeking a serene and nature-filled retreat in wine country, the estate features a main farmhouse, guest cottage, gardens, vineyards, and animals including horses, chickens, and sheep that love visitors! The ranch is an idyllic getaway for nature lovers and wine enthusiasts alike.

14. Spend a Day in San Francisco

San Francisco is a vibrant city located just an hour away from the valley. There are plenty of things to see and do even if you only have one day to spend in San Francisco .

Some must-see attractions include the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the iconic cable cars. The city is also known for having an incredible food scene so be sure to try some of the local specialties like clam chowder, sourdough bread, and the famous Ghirardelli chocolate!

The Best Way to Get Around Napa Valley

The most efficient way to easily get around in Napa Valley is by car. This gives visitors the flexibility to explore the various wineries and attractions at their own pace. However, if you plan on tasting a lot of wine it’s recommended to use a professional car service or hire a designated driver.

An alternative for the more adventurous guests is the Napa Valley Vine Trail, a 47-mile trail that connects all the regions in the valley. The Vine Trail is designed for walking or biking and offers a scenic way to tour the valley. Or for a low-cost service try out the Vine Transit buses, which offer transportation services throughout Napa Valley. Whatever method of transportation you choose, remember to drink responsibly!

The Best Time to Visit Napa Valley

While Napa is a beautiful and temperate destination year-round, there are definitely certain seasons that offer a better experience. The best time to visit Napa Valley is during the shoulder seasons, in the months of August through October or March through May. Of course you can choose to travel during the summer months, however the peak tourist season in this area coincides with the harvest season so be prepared to deal higher prices during this time.

One major highlight of the valley is the Mediterranean climate, which is an ideal for climate for growing grapes. The winters are mild and wet, while the summers are warm and dry.

Because of the proximity to the coast the annual temperature doesn’t change too much, and the area also gets cool breezes at night. This is great for growing grapes because they can ripen in the warm weather but still keep some acidity from the cool evenings. The longer growing season makes the wines taste better too!

RUTHERFORD, Calif. (AP) — As the head of an association of winemakers in southern Ukraine, Georgiy Molchanov knows a lot about how to cultivate grapes; not so much how to grow them amid undetonated mines.

But that was the situation he found himself in after a Russian rocket dropped the explosives on his vineyard near the port city of Mykolaiv in August 2022, six months after Russia invaded. The damage — and danger — the mines brought to his business marked one of the myriad catastrophic effects the more than 2-year-old war has had on the eastern European country.

Now, thanks to the combined efforts of the international nonprofit organization Roots of Peace, Rotary International, and the Grgich Hills Estate winery in Napa Valley, Molchanov is taking the steps he needs to reclaim and heal his wounded land.

First, Roots of Peace and Rotary International provided him with the expertise and supplies he needed to safely detonate the mines. Then, the groups teamed up to bring him and five other Ukrainian winemakers to Grgich Hills in Rutherford. During a weeklong stay here, they learned about regenerative organic farming, an agricultural method that prioritizes soil health and ecosystem balance.

“We are discussing how to bring nature, how to bring wines, not harm ... into this land,” said Molchanov, who heads the Association of Craft Winemakers in Ukraine’s Black Sea region.

FILE - Workers tend to cannabis plants in a greenhouse in Carpinteria, Calif., April 12, 2018. California’s workplace regulators passed rules that would protect indoor workers from extreme heat. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File)

He and his fellow entrepreneurs have another goal as well: to spread the message that, despite the ongoing war, the Ukrainian people remain resilient and look forward to life in peace.

“People in Ukraine are still alive,” said Svitlana Tsybak, Owner and CEO of Beykush Winery, also located in the Mykolaiv area. “Yes, war is in our soul, in our life, but we need ... to live our lives so, of course, we need to work.”

Tsybak said Russian troops are staked out about 4 miles (7 kilometers) from her vineyard but the war hasn’t directly affected her operations. Her winery started exporting wine to the United States six months ago. She said she wants to learn how to expand the presence of Ukrainian wine in the U.S. market.

Heidi Kuhn, a California peace activist who founded Roots of Peace, has worked for decades to remove landmines from war-ravaged land that she later helps to convert into vineyards, orchards and vegetable fields. Rotary International, which has collaborated for years with Roots of Peace, helped plan the program for the Ukrainian winemakers and funded their travel to California.

“There’s an estimated 110 million landmines in 60 countries, and today Ukraine tragically has over 30% of the land riddled with landmines,” said Kuhn, whose program is known as the “mines to vines” initiative.

In 2000, Kuhn worked with the founder of Grgich Hills Estate, the late Croatian immigrant Miljenko “Mike” Grgich, and other vintners to raise funds to clear landmines in Vukovar in eastern Croatia. The town, located in a winemaking region on the banks of the Danube, was reduced to rubble during the 1991-95 war in the former Yugoslavia.

Ivo Jeramaz, Grgich’s nephew, a native Croatian and a winemaker at Grgich Hills Estate, said he feels deeply for Ukrainians because he understands how heart-wrenching it is to live through war. He said the family winery has for decades helped Roots of Peace.

“This is just the beginning of a hopeful relationship to literally restore the health of this country,” he said. “I hope that not only they see how farming can be conducted without harmful chemicals, but also that they’re inspired and that their hope is elevated.”
