Barcelona is everything you need in a holiday location, from its seven stunning beaches to world famous architecture and wonderfully rich Michelin star cuisine it’s a city that leaves you wanting more. Set on the coast in the north east of Spain, it is the capital of Catalonia, a region of Spain which borders on Andorra and France. The people of Barcelona are fiercely proud of their Catalonian location which makes the city a hive of activity with passionate locals who want to show tourists the best of what Catalonia has to offer.

The city was a blank canvas for Antoni Guadi, a Barcelona based architect, who created multiple monuments across the city which have made Barcelona a cornerstone of architectural modernism.

His most famous construction is the Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic church which remains unfinished since construction started in 1866. The awe-inspiring structure is unmissable and its shadow looms large over the streets of Barcelona with its soon to be tallest element of the church reaching over 172 metres tall.

Weather in The Mediterranean

Once you’ve basked in the beauty of Sagrada, head towards the coast and the world famous La Rambla, the city’s most famous street. La Rambla is a pedestrian heavy street running for three quarters of a mile just off the coast. Broken up into five sections, it is a bustling city which is over flowing with first class restaurants and classic Spanish cuisine. Street performers line the busy pavements and whatever time you visit you’ll be able to admire a human statue or a mind-blowing magic trick. La Rambla really epitomises Barcelona life and this one street will tell you everything you need to know about a wonderful city. Due to it being such a popular area expect a lot of fellow tourists trying to soak in the La Rambla culture.

After La Rambla why not pick up some local tapas, ranging from a couple of Euros to over a hundred. Tapas is the personification of Catalan cuisine, these bite sized goodies can be found everywhere you turn, with tapas bars on every corner, why not dive in.

Finally, after your fun filled day, finish it off in Barcelona’s exclusive nightlife. Barcelona may not be known for its nightlife, but that may just be one of its best kept secrets. Due to the vast array of different people across the city you can be sure to find a bar or club to suit you. From classy cocktail bars such as Dry Martini found in the Eixample district to dynamic nightclubs such as Universal found in Sant Gervasi, dance and drink the night away.

One of the city’s busiest museums, you will be sure to find a queue of people eagerly waiting for the doors to open. The museum houses Pablo Picasso’s lesser known work from his formative years, where he was developing into the artist we now know and love. Displaying a deep relationship between Barcelona and the city’s adopted son, this immense and astonishing display of his work is not to be missed.

Another one of Guadi’s stamps on the city, he along with Eusebi Guell created this area of delight as a way of providing upper class housing with a touch of class. Inspired by Hansel and Gretel, the buildings are quirky and unique and almost immediately unforgettable. Unfortunately, in the early 1900s the Barcelona locals were not as enthusiastic about the design with only two of the sixty houses which were planned being built. In 1984 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage.

Tickets can be purchased for less than 10 euros and pre-booking is recommended.

Honorable MentionS

These hotels are worth consideration but didn’t make our top list for a few reasons (specified)

W Barcelona (Iconic Sail-Shaped Hotel)

W Hotel Barcelona

Address: Plaça Rosa dels Vents, 1, Final, Passeig de Joan de Borbó, 08039 Barcelona, Spain Description: Iconic sail-shaped hotel with luxurious rooms, a rooftop pool, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. The hotel’s modern design and excellent service make it a top choice for a luxurious stay in Barcelona.

NOTE: The W looks close to the cruise port in Barcelona when viewing a map, but it’s not easy to get to. It’s on a peninsula requiring a cab ride to just about anywhere you want to go. It’s great for a beach stay due to its proximity to beaches, but don’t choose this if you think you’re going to walk to the cruise ship from the hotel!

YURBBAN Ramblas

We LOVE the Yurban. It’s a boutique hotel located on Las Ramblas with amazing views over the busy street. The only reason we don’t highly recommend it for cruise passengers is the rooms are really small. They’re lovely, but small when considering 2 adults, likely with lots of luggage, just getting off of an international flight. But definitely give it a look and check the prices, it can be an amazing value.

It’s not our top pick because the rooms are really small (but nicely done).

Barcelona Barcelo Sants

Barcelona Cruise Port Hotels - The Best (And Closest) Hotel Options for Cruisers 9

Another hotel in Barcelona we really enjoy. It’s about a 15-20 minute cab ride to the cruise port, however, if you’re going to explore surrounding areas during your pre or post-cruise vacation, the hotel sits right above the Sants train station which can get you anywhere in the region quickly. The rooms are modern, the hotel is unusual with a space-themed lobby and common areas, and the location is unbeatable for arriving or departing by train. This is our go-to when we train into Barcelona from other major cities in Europe the night before a cruise.

It’s not in our top picks because the hotel caters more to business travelers and the location, while great for getting around the region by train, is just “ok”. But it’s a wonderful option if you’re arriving late or having to depart early – because of the connection to the train and access to other easy transportation.

These Barcelona hotels offer various options for cruise travelers, from luxury stays to convenient locations, ensuring a comfortable experience near the Barcelona cruise port.

Where to stay in Barcelona before a cruise?

If you’re gearing up for a cruise and need a spot to rest in Barcelona beforehand, Ciutat Vella (Old Town) and Port Vell are good choices. You’ll be in the very heart of the city to let you soak in the local vibe before setting sail, while still being close to the cruise terminal.

Honestly speaking, Barcelona isn’t that big, and most of the areas of the city that are popular for tourists to stay in tend to be within an easy taxi ride of Barcelona’s cruise port. That’s why you don’t really have to be worried about staying directly next to the port, as you’ll be able to get to your ship without any worries.

At the same time, some areas are more convenient than others – especially when it comes to the direction of traffic and ease of accessibility with luggage (i.e. it’s time to avoid those little medieval laneways!). That’s why I’d suggest the following for where to stay in Barcelona before a cruise:

  • Ciutat Vella (Old Town): Some parts of the Old Town are definitely more convenient than others, especially to make sure you’re on the “right” side of the road for your taxi to easily get you to your cruise. That’s why my top pick for the best hotel near the Barcelona cruise port is Duquesa de Cardona as, for me, it’s the perfect mix of location, history, food options and a truly beautiful building.
  • Port Vell: This area, starting at the Columbus statue and continuing down to Via Laietana, is good for those who want to be that little bit closer to the cruise terminal. It’s also a convenient base for wandering around places like the Gothic Quarter and the Born district. Check out Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL , which is literally within walking distance of the cruise ships – so it’s as close as you can get while still being an incredible hotel.

Unfortunately, when you start looking for hotels that are near the Barcelona cruise terminals, there’s a lot of mis-information on the internet about the best areas to stay. It seems to me that some people just looked at a map, found areas that seem to be near the port and told people to go there.

But that’s not the case in reality, with some of these “close areas” actually making it a bit tricky to get to the port from there. Here are the areas I’d recommend you avoid:

  • Montjuic: Sure, it’s visible right from the Moll Adossat Terminals where cruises dock and might seem close on a map, but that can be a bit misleading. Cabs have to take a super circular route from the cruise terminals to get here and it’s also not the most convenient place from which to explore Barcelona.
  • Poblesec: Located right at Montjuic’s foot, Poblesec is known for its tapas bars. However, the streets here are often narrow and have an uphill gradient, meaning you might have a bit of an (uphill) walk to the nearest taxi or subway station. Youve also got the risk, depending on your hotel’s location, of having to pass through Raval to get to La Rambla, which I wouldn’t recommend as it can be pretty dodgy. Speaking of which…
  • El Raval: El Raval sits between Paral·lel Avenue and La Rambla in the Old Town. The northern part boasts lively cafes and a rich history. However, the southern end, closer to the cruise piers, isn’t as inviting. It’s older with some areas best approached with caution – to put it mildly (that is: you really don’t need to go there).

What’s the best hotel near the Barcelona Cruise Port with a shuttle?

Contrary to popular belief, the premier hotels situated close to the Barcelona cruise port don’t provide dedicated shuttle services to the port. However, there’s no cause for concern. Taxis in the area are both cost-effective and easily available, ensuring that guests can comfortably reach their desired destinations.

Despite the absence of direct hotel shuttles, Barcelona is a city that boasts an efficient transportation system. Visitors can rely on the taxi network, which not only provides timely pickups but also boasts clear meter-based charging systems, minimizing any risk of overcharging.

For example, my preferred option for hotels near the Barcelona cruise terminals, Duquesa de Cardona , is just an 8-minute taxi drive door-to-door. While it doesn’t have a shuttle to the port, you can see here just how convenient it is anyway.

So if your primary criteria for selecting a hotel is shuttle availability, you might want to reconsider. Many top-notch establishments are at your disposal, and the seamless taxi service in the region ensures you’re never far from where you need to be.

What’s the best luxury hotel near Barcelona Cruise Port?

For those looking for luxury close to the Barcelona cruise port, Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL stands out. Located in the historic heart of the city, Ciutat Vella (Old Town), this 5-star establishment is in  the World Trade Center building, offering spectacular views of Barcelona’s port.

Moreover, the iconic La Rambla is merely a 5-minute stroll away.

The Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL exemplifies design elegance, with rooms that feature wooden flooring and fabrics of warm hues. Every room is furnished with a flat-screen TV equipped with satellite channels and a spacious work desk.

The in-house Grand Marina restaurant is known for its Mediterranean dishes made from seasonal ingredients. Meanwhile, the lobby bar sets the mood with exotic cocktails and live music.

Plus, if you’re an early riser, you can indulge in a lavish breakfast served on the terrace – well, weather permitting.

Wellness enthusiasts can take advantage of the Marina GL’s gym, equipped with a variety of cardiovascular machines and free weights. And if you want a bit of relaxation, massage services are also at your disposal.

What’s the best cheap hotel near Barcelona Cruise Port?

For budget-conscious travelers, Hotel Oasis emerges as a commendable option near the Barcelona cruise port. Around the corner from França Railway Station and a brief 100 meters (330 feet) from the lively Born district, this hotel promises convenience without a hefty price tag.

The rooms are modern, come with air-conditioning, satellite TV, and private bathrooms equipped with hairdryers.

In addition to its affordability, Hotel Oasis is packed with amenities to enhance your stay. During the right seasons, guests can relax at the terrace that houses an outdoor pool.

The Oasis café-bar also remains a popular spot within the hotel, offering an array of hot beverages and cocktails throughout the day.

If you’re keen on exploring the vicinity, the sandy shores and vibrant bars of Barceloneta are a mere 200 meters (660 feet) away. The historic Santa Maria del Mar Church is also within a walking distance, just 4 minutes away.

The hotel’s strategic location near the Barceloneta Metro Station (only 50 meters/160 feet away) and the serene Ciutadella Park (300 meters/980 feet away) is a definite plus.

See if the Hotel Oasis is available on your cruise dates here.

How far is the cruise port in Barcelona from town?

The cruise port in Barcelona is conveniently located near the city center. Specifically, it’s situated near the southern end of La Rambla, which means it’s only about a 15-20 minute walk or 10-15 minute taxi ride (with traffic) from the heart of town.

Given its proximity, you can easily access major attractions, including the historic Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter). Whether you’re interested in historical architecture or boutique shopping, the port’s location provides easy access to both.

Can you walk to the cruise port in Barcelona?

Yes, it’s entirely possible to walk to the cruise port in Barcelona. From areas like La Rambla, it’s a straightforward 15-20 minute walk. It’s a nice route, especially if you’re not in a rush and want to enjoy the surroundings.

However, if you have heavy luggage or several bags, it might be more comfortable to take transport. In particular, taxis are reasonably priced, so I’d suggest doing that instead.

How do you get around Barcelona from the cruise port?

From the cruise port in Barcelona, there are several transportation options to help you get around the city. Buses, taxis, and the metro are readily available. If you’re aiming for specific attractions, the blue PortBus might be your best option.

For those who prefer the metro, the Drassanes station is near the lower end of La Rambla. Alternatively, renting a bike is an option if you’re looking to explore the city at a leisurely pace.

Is it easy to get a taxi from the Barcelona cruise port?

Yes, getting a taxi from the Barcelona cruise port is typically straightforward. There are usually many taxis available to serve passengers. However, during peak seasons or times, there might be a slight wait. Note that all taxis in Barcelona accept card payment.

One Trip at a Time

Despite being the busiest cruise port outside of the USA, Barcelona hotels don’t offer the park and cruise options that are found elsewhere due to limited parking at their premises. The other hotels below are well situated for a stay before or after your cruise and if you are driving to Barcelona, check out the  parking options  here .
