Since 1951, much of Putney Student Travel’s success in creating and running summer programs stems from hiring incredibly engaging, enthusiastic, creative, responsible, adaptable, and dedicated leaders and instructors. Our leaders enjoy working with teenagers in dynamic environments and foster meaningful experiences for their students that extend well beyond the length of the program.

At Putney Student Travel, we strive to hire and retain employees who represent the vast diversity of the countries, communities, cultures, and students we work with across the globe. As a result, we are not only committed to, but passionate about employing leaders from all backgrounds. We encourage applicants from historically marginalized groups and are actively engaged in creating an inclusive work environment for leaders of all identities.

Join Our Summer Leadership Team

Successful candidates must be able to motivate and engage students in a wide range of situations and settings. Leadership on all programs requires extensive interaction with, and mentoring of, students ranging from 6th through 12th grade. As a result of hiring people who already have what it takes to facilitate safe, engaging, and meaningful programs, we are able to grant our leaders a high degree of independence and responsibility. Excellent personal leadership skills, the ability to problem-solve, and comfort handling multiple ongoing tasks are crucial. Successful candidates have the ability to inspire, empathize, educate, establish boundaries, enforce rules, and collaborate as a team with their co-leader(s). Working as a co-leadership team is paramount to the success of any program, and the size of each team varies. Groups of 18 students or fewer are led by a two-person leadership team, and groups with 19 or more students may have a leadership trio. Our campus-based programs are led by larger teams of instructors with an on-site Program Director.

Putney has a clear code of conduct (outlined below) that our students agree to in order to participate. We expect our leaders to model and enforce these rules throughout the program as well.

Our returning leaders agree that some of the most important skills necessary for a successful program are abundant energy, flexibility, passion for travel, and deep desire to engage with youth.

  • A deep desire to work with, educate, and lead youth from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Specific in-country experience in the destinations we visit.
  • Advanced proficiency or fluency in the language specific to the destination.
  • Significant experience working with students both in and out of the classroom and the ability to problem solve and make decisions that facilitate an engaging learning environment.
  • Patience and adaptability in a highly dynamic work environment.
  • An ability to assess risk and make smart decisions regarding the health, safety, and overall well-being of the group.
  • A passion for travel, exploration, and the program theme.
  • For seminar and workshop instructors, ideal candidates are enthusiastic about designing their own hands-on and field-based curriculum.
  • Career leaders should have experience working professionally in the field of the program theme.
  • Most Pre-College and Oxford Academia instructors hold advanced degrees and/or have considerable professional experience with the topic in addition to teaching experience.
  • The ability to be “on” 24 hours a day for the duration of the program and to manage and communicate their own personal needs in order to do so.

More Information

Career, exploration, service, & language programs.

• A bachelor’s degree or higher or considerable professional work experience in a field related to the program theme.

• Working proficiency in the target language of the destination; fluency is required for Language programs. Preferential placement for candidates with experience teaching the target language.

• Significant experience living or traveling in the target country or region.

• Significant experience working with students.

• Certification in Basic CPR/First Aid at your own expense before the start of the program. Many of our leaders hold more advanced certifications such as WFA, WFR, or EMT.

• Ability to drive stick-shift, or ability to learn if necessary (relevant for some service programs, but not all).

• Ability to attend mandatory leader training in Vermont in early June. More details on training will be outlined during the interview process.

• For Service-based programs, enthusiasm for engaging in highly physical projects.

Pre-College programs & Oxford Academia — Instructors & Program Assistants

• A bachelor’s degree or higher or considerable professional work experience in the seminar topic. Applicants for Program Assistant positions must have completed their second year of college.

• Significant experience working with high school students.

• Significant experience teaching or working within the seminar field and enthusiasm for creating their own hands-on, project-based curriculum.

• Program Assistants must be flexible and resourceful, willing to take ownership of tasks as well as be able to follow instructions and work independently without a lot of direct supervision.

• Certification in Basic CPR/First Aid at your own expense before the start of the program.

• Ability to attend mandatory training in the program destination a week prior to the start of the program.

• Applicants for domestic campus-based programs must have a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to drive a 7–15 passenger vans.

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, but we encourage you to apply early in the cycle (November–March). Qualified candidates will be invited to interview via a video call and/or may be offered an interview in person at our offices in Vermont.

We appreciate your patience during the hiring process as we work to put together holistic leadership teams for each program. We are proud to have a high percentage of returning leaders each year and prioritize placing them first. First-time leaders can expect placement decisions beginning in March until all positions are filled.

A more exact decision-making timeline will be clarified during your interview as circumstances may differ.

Whenever possible, we prefer that candidates lead multiple programs a season. We also prefer that first-year leaders return to the same program should they return for a second summer.

The health and safety of our leaders and students is our top priority. We continue to monitor the changing COVID landscape and have developed robust health policies and safety protocols that are particular to each destination. More specific guidelines will be provided throughout the hiring and onboarding process.

For most programs we highly recommend, but don’t require, that leaders be vaccinated for COVID-19. For a select few programs, including all National Geographic Student Travel programs, leaders are required to be fully vaccinated with the most recent shot available.

All leaders are required to attend an intensive training every year. During training, leaders participate in active and engaging discussions, seminars, activities, and workshops that cover topics such as the Putney philosophy, leadership skills, managing group dynamics, and health and safety protocols. Attendance at leader training is mandatory.

Leader training in Vermont will take place from May 29 to June 2, 2024. All reasonable travel to and from Vermont, as well as room and board for the duration of training, will be paid for by Putney.

We require that our students refrain from the following behaviors while  participating on our programs. We expect leaders to adhere to this code of conduct as well and to enforce these rules with their students while on the program to ensure a safe and positive environment for all students, leaders, and local partners.

  • Possessing, consuming, or distributing alcohol or drugs.
  • Displaying a consistently negative attitude toward leaders, fellow students, or the goals of the program; or an unwillingness to participate in program activities or projects.
  • Riding on mopeds or motorcycles, electric scooters, hitchhiking, or riding in unauthorized vehicles.
  • Leaving the group without authorization, including leaving residences or hotels after lights-out.
  • Visiting in rooms of other students unless prior arrangements are made with leaders.
  • Stealing, or deliberately damaging any buildings, furnishings, or other property.
  • Engaging in behavior (including speech) that intimidates any person, or that compromises the inclusive atmosphere of the program as determined by Putney Student Travel. This includes the expectation that any physical contact between students will include each person’s spoken and ongoing affirmative consent.
  • Body piercing or tattooing during the program.
  • Consuming tobacco products (including e-cigarettes).
  • Not abiding by Putney Student Travel’s cell phone policy as outlined in the Program FAQs document in your digital locker.
  • Engaging in behavior contrary to local government protocols or Putney Student Travel’s health guidelines implemented during the coronavirus pandemic for the safety of the community.

In addition to offering competitive stipends that are fair and equitable, we cover all reasonable domestic and international travel to and from training as well as to and from your program destination(s). While under contract, we also cover all other program-related expenses, such as accommodations, activities, and food.

Stipends are calculated based on level of education, years of related experience in teaching or leading similar programs, fluency in relevant languages, skills relevant to the program theme(s) (professional photographers, wildlife biologists, etc), and advanced medical training above basic First Aid and CPR. Leaders that return for multiple summers also receive a pay bump for up to four years.

Each stipend is calculated on an individual basis, taking into consideration the criteria above in addition to the length and type of trip, and the number of trips led in a particular summer. Therefore, it can be difficult to estimate exact pay until all of these factors are accounted for. With that said, first year leaders on a shorter program can expect to receive a base pay starting around $1,000 per trip. For more experienced leaders on longer or more specialized programs the base pay may start closer to $1,500 or $2,000 per trip. More specific ranges can be outlined in the later stages of the hiring process and an exact stipend amount will be detailed in the official job offer. All stipend estimates and specific amounts are given in pre-tax dollars.

Returning leaders receive a pay bump for each year they return to lead up to four years.

Putney’s collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution offers opportunities for high school students to explore the world through the Smithsonian lens. As the world’s largest museum and research complex, students are able to explore destinations and themes in ways only the Smithsonian is able to provide. Leaders of these programs help students gain a better understanding of our shared past, facilitate experiential learning opportunities in the present, and help them develop the tools and resources needed to help shape the future. All of the same ideals and requirements for Putney leaders also apply to leading programs with the Smithsonian. Please visit the Smithsonian Student Travel website before applying below.

National Geographic Student Travel

National Geographic and Putney Student Travel have collaborated to offer an array of unique programs designed to engage students with themes central to the missions and initiatives of the National Geographic Society.  Destinations and itineraries are designed to fuel students’ innate curiosity in the world and create the next generation of explorers. Students go On Assignment, using Photography, Marine Biology, Wildlife Conservation, Anthropology, Robotics, and more help narrow the focus of the experience.  Leaders of these programs teach students skills used by Explorers in the field and guide them as they develop a project of their choosing. All of the same ideals and requirements for Putney leaders also apply to leading programs with National Geographic Student Travel. Please visit National Geographic Student Travel  before applying below.

Student Jobs Abroad Guide

Student jobs aren't a chore anymore. If you want to feel alive, make an impact, and create memories that last a lifetime, then these student jobs abroad are perfect for you.

Once college or university finishes, there are four months to fill with an opportunity. You can either head back home for work or escape and venture out into the world for a transformative summer of meaningful travel.

There's a range of student jobs overseas fitting your passion, background, and experience level. Whether it's leading outdoor adventures in  America ,  China , or  Canada  or  teaching in South Korea , there are student jobs abroad for anyone who wants to make a difference.

How much do student jobs abroad pay?

Student jobs overseas have varying pay rates depending on location. The main reason for travel is cultural exchange and contributing to another community, but every program ensures you earn enough to enjoy your placement and travel afterwards.

How long are student jobs abroad?

Student jobs abroad appreciate your limited time available between study terms, so the contract accommodates that. As such, you’ll need to be available for 3-4 months in the summer, allowing you to also travel the country afterwards.

Where can I get a student job abroad?

Student jobs abroad are limited to the summer, so you’ll find roles in locations that require a summer season. This means there’s a huge range of potential destinations worldwide, from  summer camps in America  and  summer camps in Canada  to other opportunities in  China  and elsewhere.

How can I get a student job abroad?

Student jobs overseas are for those studying yet looking to earn money while seeing the world. As your timeframe is limited (being between terms), student jobs abroad fit within it. Agencies understand that, so their easy application processes are tailored to these roles.

What kind of student jobs overseas are available?

The job of a lifeguard is responsible, but mainly a simple and fun job, through which you have a unique chance to get to know the USA.

The content of your work will be to ensure the safety of visitors to the pool assigned to you. Keeping the pool itself and its surroundings clean is a matter of course.

It also includes a course of the American Red Cross , so thanks to the program you will gain experience and knowledge that you will use in the future.

Even before the interview and the course itself, you will complete a preliminary exam so that you know that you will be able to complete the course 100% and that the summer in the USA is very close.

The pools are mainly located on the east coast in the states of Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia.

Student Jobs Abroad Programs

Provided you've done a good job (which we're sure you will), then your employer will happily provide a professional reference stating your work contract and performance.

This can be super useful going for further jobs, or for university, so make it your aim to get an amazing reference from your student job.

Yes, students are allowed to work full time during the holidays, making it the perfect time to earn money.

Although there are restrictions on the number of hours you work during term time, you are then allowed to work in a full time role (at least until your studies resume).

This is why so many students look to land a student summer job, as it's the perfect fundraiser for either the rest of summer, or the start of your studies.

There are two ways you can go about it: either go direct, or through an agency.

Direct is when you see an open student travel opportunity (like if you see a job role directly advertised by an employer) and you pop over your CV in the hope they see and like it.

If you go through an agency, they are able to use their extensive knowledge of the industry to not only find you the correct roles that are out there, but to also support you and provide you with the guidance needed to help you understand what makes you the right candidate for a given role.

This includes a full application process, where they can ensure that you sing about your strengths and make sure they match the requirements of the employers.

Every country has loads of student travel opportunities for the summer, across a number of industries.

However, student jobs abroad are very dependent on meeting the visa requirements for certain countries.

As such, certain areas are easier to secure summer roles for student travel than others.

Over our many years of helping work and travel abroad, we have built up trusted relationships with employers and visa sponsors.

This means we can ensure that we offer a comprehensive, fully managed job placement package in a number of different countries.

There are so many student travel opportunities throughout the summer.

Where you work can be very dependent on what you would like to do as your student travel job.

Summer camps are hugely popular student travel jobs, with destinations including America , Canada , and China high on the list.

If you'd like to teach, then there are lots of potential destinations, such as South Korea , in which you can do so.

There is also resort work in America , where you can further your passion and career in the hospitality industry.

The great thing is that there's something for everyone, whether a student or not.

Now, this type of summer work abroad isn’t for the faint of heart. Agriculture jobs will involve long hours and almost entirely physical labor, but you'll learn tons of new skills throughout the summer. You'll get to ride horses and motorbikes, pick up a few new fence-building techniques, engage in cattle work, practice operating tractors, and maybe even chainsaw. Don't worry: safety first, especially when working on a ranch!

Most summer work abroad programs in agriculture and ranch work are available in Australia , New Zealand , and Ireland . Why not rack up hours (and money!) on the ranch, and then explore what your host country has to offer? Seems like a solid summer plan, right?

4. English Teaching Jobs Abroad

Two little girls writing in a workbook

You can teach adults, university students, or teens, but we think working with kiddos is the best way to work hard and play hard abroad.

Do you consider yourself a language-lover? Do you love engaging a room? Is guiding fun activities your thing? Opportunities to teach English in between semesters of school can offer the perfect summer work abroad programs for college students. Whether you're actually pursuing a degree in English education or not, you may find fulfillment working as an English teacher abroad.

What's super awesome is that there are even language camps that hire language teachers, program organizers, and camp managers. You could teach English at camps in Italy during the summer or at English immersion camps in France.

If getting TEFL certified is what you’re after, you could spend your summer earning your TEFL certification abroad and simultaneously prepping for longer-term teaching contracts. While most teach abroad programs require a bit more of a time commitment, opting to teach English on a summer work abroad program is the best way to squeeze in some cross-cultural challenges as an undergraduate and find the confidence within yourself to command campers’ attention.

5. au pair jobs abroad.

How can you say no to a summer with these cuties?

Do you truly enjoy working with children? Does living with a family and exploring the ins and outs of a place entice you? Be an au pair abroad to explore a new place while also developing a relationship with a family, as they’ll become your best resource to discovering wherever it is in the world you end up. Do you research to find the right fit with a family—after all, you’ll be living with them!

Native English speakers are in fierce demand within au pair jobs abroad, so you can find placements in families from Western Europe to Oceania , and anywhere and everywhere in between. Maybe you’ll find a job in France , say hello to Spain , or get a working holiday visa in Australia or New Zealand . If you like kids, you’ll surely find the perfect au pair summer work abroad!

[MORE READING: Why Au Pairing Abroad is a Good Career Move]

How to work abroad for the summer: 4 steps.

The steps are pretty straight forward, though it does require more actions than simply getting a passport and packing a big bottle of sunscreen. If you're interested in learning how to find short term work abroad, read on!

1. Know what you want to do

Before you start the (sometimes hefty) program search process, it helps to know what you want to do, work-wise and what your end goal is, both skill-wise and finance-wise. If you want to make a ton of money to pay off student debt, work in a country with high pay and low cost of living. If you want to set yourself up for future jobs with children, consider au pair'ing abroad, regardless of location. If you would rather eat dirt than pick fruit from trees all day, maybe opt out of Australia.

2. Find a summer work abroad program

Resources like GoAbroad are great this—just check out our directory of programs hiring for summer 2018/2019. You can filter based on location preferences and types of work. Be sure to read reviews, talk to past employees, and get in touch with the program to suss out if it is a good fit for you. If you're feeling stuck, our team of OnlineAdvisors will happily point you in the right direction.

3. Sort your visas

The legalities of international work can be tricky, but that's a perk of going abroad with a summer work abroad program. They should be able to help you sort your paperwork, dot your i's and cross your t's, so you can enter the country worry-free.

[ Keep reading: How to Work Your Way Around the World Without the Visa Hassle ]

4. book your plane ticket and rake in the dough.

Getting paid to travel the world is half the fun. Gaining new professional skills and making your resume shine is the other. Make sure you commit to kicking butt at both (don't work too hard, but don't play too hard either) for a truly powerful and transformative experience abroad.

Snag your dream summer job abroad

college student summer jobs abroad

Finding college student summer jobs abroad isn't as hard as it sounds!

After getting a glimpse at all the best summer work abroad programs for college students, maybe you’ve narrowed down your search, or maybe you haven’t. You’ve perused the options and you’ve got to consider location, wages, type of work, language acquisition and opportunities for travel . Summer work abroad programs are completely and totally up to you—it’s a matter of figuring out where you see yourself and what you see yourself doing in between semesters!

No matter which job jumps out at you, it's always best to get rockin’ and rollin’ on reading reviews, reaching out to providers and program alumni, and comparing programs side-by-side with MyGoAbroad . There's no better time to try out new jobs in new places than in the summer (even if you are a high school student looking for work abroad ). Push your boundaries as a college student, and extend your undergrad learning to another country. Besides, they have ice cream everywhere and you’ll still have a little free time to work on your tan.

6 Great Summer Jobs for Students Who Want to Travel

For students looking to work and travel this summer, consider these six job opportunities! Plus, read on for tips on managing your finances while traveling.

But if you don’t want to work while attending classes, having a summer job could be a great alternative. These jobs don’t typically interfere with your school schedule, and many of them offer different travel opportunities. If you want a summer job and like to travel, here are some employment options to keep in mind.

Do you like kids? If so, you might find a position as an au pair appealing. Au pairs are typically live-in caretakers who are assigned to a family abroad to help care for their children. In exchange, they often receive free lodging and meals as well as free days and pocket money. Au pair opportunities can be found through sites like AuPair.com .

2. English teacher

Wondering what to do as an English major ? Teach English! You don’t actually have to be an English major to teach English, but it doesn’t hurt. There are loads of opportunities to teach English worldwide, including in Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. Teaching English is also a great way to connect with people from other cultures. For helpful resources, check out TEFL.org .

3. Cruise ship staff

Cruise ships are like small, floating cities that travel from port to port, and they require plenty of workers to keep everything running smoothly. If you’re interested in seeing different parts of the world and having a unique experience, the cruise life might make sense for you. Find positions on job boards such as All Cruise Jobs , or visit specific cruise line sites, including Carnival and Disney Cruise Line .

4. Government paid internships

Not every summer job involving travel has to take you outside the country. Potential opportunities could include working with the National Parks Service, Department of Commerce, and more. You might even be able to turn your internship into a job if it’s something you want to pursue after graduation. If you’re interested in a paid internship with one of the many branches of the US government, search for positions on USAJobs.gov .

5. Camp counselor

Camps are often an opportunity for kids of all ages to learn skills, make new friends, and have loads of fun during summer vacation. But these camps don’t function on their own—you need a small army of employees to manage activities, teach classes, and prepare meals. For help finding summer camp jobs, check out the American Camp Association .

6. Alarm technician

Not many summer jobs offer opportunities to make tens of thousands of dollars in just three to four months, but companies such as Vivint employ hundreds of students every summer for door-to-door sales where you can make this and more. Positions are often available in different areas of the country, including cities such as New York, Dallas, and Las Vegas. If you want to avoid knocking on doors, consider being an installation technician instead. You’ll likely have long days and hours (you might be on call six days a week), but you’ll have the opportunity to explore a new city and make some cash.

Tips for handling your money while traveling

Traveling can bring up different financial situations and worries you may not be used to. If you plan to take a summer job that involves traveling, consider these tips to be financially prepared:

  • Use travel credit cards. Does your credit card work in other countries? Do you have to pay a fee to make foreign purchases? The best travel credit cards typically come with no foreign transaction fees, and many of them will function in most countries worldwide.
  • Have a debit card with no international ATM fees. Does your bank have fees for making withdrawals in foreign locations? Choose a bank with no international ATM fees to help reduce your potential costs while traveling.
  • Use online banks. It’s possible your bank might not have in-person branches in another country or state, but an online bank can typically help you manage your money from anywhere.
  • Save up money with a side hustle. Costs for food, lodging, activities, utilities, transportation, and more need to be considered for a travel-related summer job. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make extra money during the school year so you can pad your bank account before you travel.
  • Research job opportunities. Not every summer job will offer the same pay, experience, or included perks. If you want to find a job that suits you, take advantage of all the job search resources out there. Internet job boards are your friend, but also consider directly reaching out to companies you’re interested in.

Working while you’re in school is common, but not all jobs have to be done while you’re taking classes. Certain summer jobs offer opportunities to make money and get some travel in at the same time. If you’re considering a summer job that requires a temporary relocation, remember to get your finances in order beforehand.

I love this website and have been using it for years with my students. I originally bought products through Wintergreen Orchard House and appreciated having key facts at my fingertips when advising students. Your site is easy to access and offers a wide array of topics I need as a busy college counselor.

CollegeXpress has helped me with all aspects of applying for college. The website is extremely easy to navigate and gives access to so many resources. I was able to research all of the colleges I was interested in, find out any information I wished to know about, and keep them organized in a list. I've also been able to research scholarships and save them as resources for later. I've used many websites in my college and scholarship search, and CollegeXpress has by far been my favorite one to use.

CollegeXpress has been a huge help! The website is very organized with finding the right scholarship for anyone and anything. With CollegeXpress, I've been able to find many scholarship opportunities to apply for. Not only that, I'm also able to search for the colleges I have interest in and see what’s required and what scholarships they offer. I've learned a lot from CollegeXpress. They've helped me in many ways to achieve my goals!

High School Class of 2023

Being a sophomore in high school, I never really worried about college. I thought it wasn't important to worry about until senior year. Through this program opportunity I came across, I realized how important it is to start looking at colleges early and start planning ahead. CollegeXpress has opened my eyes to what colleges require, what colleges are near me, and what they offer. The daily emails I get from CollegeXpress really help me look at the different options I have and what colleges I fit into. Without this website, I would not be taking the time out of my day to worry about what my future will be nor what opportunities I have. I could not be more grateful for such an amazing and useful website. It's thanks to CollegeXpress that not only me but my family now know how much potential I have in to getting into these colleges/universities that we thought were out of my reach.

Kind Words From Our Fans

“ Yellowstone National Park – I worked there the summer of 1970 and 1971 and had the time of my life.  I also met my future husband there – as we worked separate areas of the park (he worked Mammoth and I worked Canyon Village) … it is a small world when you all work in the Park.  It was a different world then, no computers and limited pay phone access, etc., yet it was a wonderful time and I will always cherish it – the park, the people, the adventures, the wildlife, and the great experience. I do recommend it for anyone interested in summer work – a great adventure for sure. Go for it!” Nancy Durango, CO
