Vysočina on the border of Moravia and Bohemia

Vysočina on the border of Moravia and Bohemia

The vysočina region – discover the harmony of nature on the border between bohemia and moravia.

The epicentre of the region is Jihlava , a town that owes its imposing architecture to the silver mines around, and one forever linked with the name Gustav Mahler. To celebrate the fact that the famous conductor lived in Jihlava for many years, an annual music festival runs for the entire summer. When strolling through the medieval heart of Jihlava, don’t miss the chance to clamber up the symbol of the town, the Mother of God Gate, or to descend into the labyrinthine network of secret underground tunnels, which at 25km is the second longest in the Czech Republic.

UNESCO wherever you look…

The past has bequeathed the Vysočina Region many noteworthy places of interest. Three of these have been added to UNESCO ’s esteemed list of world cultural heritage sites. The town of Telč is a well frequented place, and one which wows visitors with one of the most attractive squares in the country. Renaissance houses in a variety of pastel shades create a fairytale backdrop and a graceful chateau adds to the scene. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora lures visitors with its mystical side and unusual architecture. The last of the region’s UNESCO sites are the pride of Třebíč which boasts a well preserved Jewish quarter.

Active breaks amid rugged landscapes

Nature has been generous to the Vysočina Region. On your way through the region you can discover curious peat bogs near Velké Dářko, climb rock formations such as Čtyři Palice (The Four Sledgehammers) and Devět skal (Nine Rocks) or lose yourself in the forests on Žákova Mountain. This serene landscape, whose beauty has been captured on canvas by a whole army of artists, including Kosárek and Jan Zrzavý, is the ideal stage for an activity holiday. The best place for a spot of cross-country skiing is the area around Nové Město na Moravě , often a venue for skiing competitions. If you prefer getting on your bike, hit the trail from Jihlava to the Austrian town of Raabs. For water sports head for Bystřicka , which in 2010 was declared a European EDEN destination of the highest quality. Large numbers of bridleways can be found around Žďár nad Sázavou.

Where next?

A break in the Vysočina Region can be combined with a trip to Brno , the capital of Moravia, where a must-see is the villa Tugendhat , a UNESCO-listed site. If you are into wild landscapes, head for the Czech Canada area. This region’s unfettered landscapes, many lakes, huge tracts of forest and its rather cold and bleak climate are responsible for its name.

2024 Tour de France begins June 29 and includes historic firsts. Everything to know

The Paris Olympics and Paralympics will not be the only prestigious international sporting event held in France this summer.

The Tour de France, the preeminent event on the men’s cycling calendar, will return for its 111th edition from June 29 to July 21. During the three-week ride, 176 cyclists, representing 22 teams of eight, will complete 21 stages across hilly, flat and mountainous terrain. The course includes a grueling 52,230 meters (over 170,000 feet) of elevation gain and is 3,492 kilometers (2,170 miles) long. The taxing schedule includes only two rest days.

This year’s race will start in Florence, Italy, and conclude at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France. It will be the first time the finish line is not in or near Paris because the city will be hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. And the first time since 1975 the race will not finish on the Champs-Élysées.

The final stage will also break from tradition as it will be one of two time trial stages, which means the leader could be determined in the final leg. The last time the Tour de France ended with a time trial was in 1989.

In addition to Italy and France, the route passes through San Marino and Monaco. The route is famous for its picturesque scenery, from quaint rural villages to the towering Alps.

Each stage is timed, and the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages wins the acclaimed maillot jaune, or yellow jersey, to signify the general classification winner. Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, 27, hopes to seek a coveted three-peat but is still working his way back from a serious crash that hospitalized him for 12 days in April. If he does race, he will face fierce competition from a talented field that includes 2020 and 2021 winner Tadej Pogača of Slovenia.

Separate awards are also given to the best sprinter, climber and young cyclist.

Sepp Kuss, who finished as the top American in 12th place at last year’s Tour de France, is also set to return. Like last year, he will race on the same team as Vingegaard.

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France live

All stages of the Tour de France, as well as pre- and post-race coverage, will be available to stream live on Peacock. USA Network will also stream some of the stages.

NBC will simultaneously broadcast select stages of the event.

Stage 1 will begin June 29 at 6 a.m. ET. The rest of the stages typically start between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. ET.

Shaken by Grayson Murray’s death, golfers open up on tour challenges

Players share the frustrations, challenges and loneliness that accompany the pro game.

sport tour vysocina

PINEHURST, N.C. — There might be a swing coach on a driving range or a caddie helping to read the greens — not to mention a few hundred fans lining the fairways excitedly bearing witness, smartphones aloft and recording all the action. But when it comes time to address the ball, the tee box at a pro event can feel like the loneliest place on the golf course. The whole sport, in fact, can be isolating, a maddening solitary activity where the rewards are too often fleeting and the failures overwhelming.

“The unfortunate thing for what we do is, it is so lonely and it’s very difficult,” said Wyndham Clark, here this week as the defending U.S. Open champion. “Too often I think players, including myself, get tied up so much in score and outcome, and the game of golf is so frustrating and so hard. There are those really lonely times when you miss the cut, you throw your clubs in the car, you drive off, and you’re very pissed off.”

More than ever, players are talking openly about the frustrations, challenges and loneliness that are staples of professional golf. The past few weeks have highlighted some of the mental health challenges faced by professional golfers.

With the U.S. Open set to begin Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2, the world’s best players are still reeling from the sudden loss of one of their own. Last month, Grayson Murray, a 30-year-old PGA Tour member, died by suicide hours after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth. Murray had been open about his struggles with depression, anxiety and alcohol over the years.

“We’re not designed to live this life on our own,” Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, said in a eulogy. “We all carry a lot more baggage than we let on — myself especially.”

Three days later, Lexi Thompson, a 29-year-old LPGA star, surprised the golf world when she announced plans to retire at the end of the season , citing in part the mental health “battles” and the pressures faced by life on tour.

“A lot of people don’t know what we go through,” she said. “The amount of training and hard work that we put ourselves through, it’s a lot.”

Golf long has been considered a mental test as much as a physical grind, and while those around the sport admit they don’t have all the answers, many are ready to ask the questions.

“It’s great that people are talking about this,” said Julie Elion, a licensed sports psychologist who works with Clark. “I mean, there are some bad stories that brought us to this point. But it’s good that people are willing to have some tough conversations.”

Elion is there for all of the in-between moments: meeting with Clark after a round, perhaps, or before a practice session. On Tuesday, during his practice round at storied Pinehurst No. 2, Clark sidled up to Elion as he made his way from the 11th green to the 12th tee box, and the two had a lighthearted chat as he idly swung his putter. Her goal is to be a calming force for her players, a visual reminder of the mental goals they’ve set.

“I’ve been in many low spots where you have some negative thoughts which you don’t ever want to have,” Clark said. “Golf can do that to you. You got to do your best to not let it do that.”

Elion also works with Justin Thomas and Max Homa, among others, and is well-acquainted with the demands of life on tour: the travel, the performance struggles, the myriad demands. Clark notes that the highlights fans see — the booming drives, winding putts and joyful trophy presentation — represent just a tiny fraction of a golf tournament.

“In reality, I’d say, 80 percent of the field storms off pretty pissed off after a lot of the rounds,” he said.

Murray’s suicide is not as much a wake-up call for the golfers on tour as it is a reminder. Smylie Kaufman, a former tour pro, said that for players, the season can be a blur of flights and hotels, leader boards and missed cuts. Players are removed from their families all the while, juggling internal and external pressure.

“It’s very easy for every single shot that you hit to attach emotions to it,” Kaufman said.

Gary Williams, the golf analyst, has seen from up close how players struggle to adapt to life on tour. A recovering alcoholic, Williams was familiar with Murray’s struggles and also his recovery.

In a recent interview, Williams noted that all the time a pro golfer spends alone can be particularly dangerous for someone in the throes of addiction.

“That is what the disease wants: It wants you isolated,” he said. “It wants you alone in your thoughts, and those thoughts can then get sideways very, very quickly.”

Elion urges some of her players to travel with roommates on the road, a caddie or maybe a friend. She fears what happens when the hotel room door closes and a player has idle time to replay bad shots, dwell on failures or scroll through social media toxicity. In announcing her retirement, Thompson noted that “social media never sleeps.”

Depression and anxiety also can lead to substance abuse, a cycle that is hardly new on tour and certainly an issue across other sports and industries. At the peak of his playing career in 2000, Notah Begay III was arrested and charged with aggravated DUI — a second DUI offense — and spent seven days in jail.

“It’s hard,” said Begay, now an NBC analyst. “We were raised in an era where if you admit your weaknesses or you admit that you’re having deep, dark thoughts, which a lot of us often have surrounding performances, personal issues and whatnot, it’s viewed as a weakness.”

Compared with some other sports, golf has been fairly progressive in addressing mental health. Renowned sports psychologist Bob Rotella started working with PGA Tour golfers 40 years ago, and many of the top players count a mental or performance coach as part of their teams. But the job has evolved. Many of today’s mental coaches on tour are just as focused on mental health and well-being as they are performance, and Elion said the two are intimately connected. Troubles at home can affect a golfer’s performance, just as frustration from a bad round can linger long after a player walks off the 18th green.

Tour officials say they’re trying to line up resources to help players in all areas, though some on tour note that while there usually are physical therapists or masseuses on-site at a tournament, players have to work harder to access mental health resources.

Speaking with reporters one day after Murray’s death, Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, said he reached out to Murray after a since-deleted 2021 Twitter post in which Murray said the tour did nothing to help him with his addiction.

“Over the last several years, I spent a lot of time with him because I wanted to understand what we could do in his estimation, in his opinion, to help everybody else out here,” Monahan said. “We’ve made a number of advancements along those lines, and it’s become a real point of focus and emphasis.”

The tour employs a medical adviser and maintains a mental health task force. It has a mental health support line available for players and their families and also helps connect players with mental health care providers or counseling services.

Murray’s death sparked a dialogue that started last month and continues this week at the U.S. Open.

“I think it’s important that we don’t sweep this under the rug as an organization, as a game, as athletes,” Begay said, “because we’re human beings as well.”

David beckham shuts down rumors of spice girls reunion tour with victoria: ‘not happening’.

David Beckham quashed any hope for a Spice Girls reunion.

In a new interview, the former soccer star, 49, shut down speculation that the girl group — which includes his wife, Victoria Beckham — is planning to go on tour again.

“Unfortunately, that’s not happening,” he told Variety in a cover story published Thursday.

David Beckham

Although all five women recently got together, David explained that they are all too busy to squeeze in a tour at the moment.

“Victoria was so pleased to see the girls, and it was a massive part of her life, the girls, but obviously, all the girls have got their own things going on,” he said. “They will do certain things together at certain times.”

The Manchester United legend explained that his wife’s schedule is jam-packed between managing her beauty brand and fashion lines.

“If anyone’s busier than me, it’s her,” he said.

The Spice Girls

While the girl group will not be hitting the road anytime soon, they reunited in April at Victoria’s 50th birthday party , where they put on an impromptu performance of their 1998 single “Stop.”

David recorded the moment and posted it online, showing Victoria, Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie “Mel B” Brown standing on a platform doing their signature dance moves from the song’s  iconic music video .

“I know it’s what people want, but in all honesty, I think I was the most excited of anyone,” the athlete told the magazine of the performance.

David said he was blown away seeing “all of the girls in one room” again — let alone taking the stage.

“All of the girls haven’t been on a stage together for over 15 years. So, to have them all there, to have them all up on stage, to have our youngest son playing guitar?” he gushed with a smile on his face.

Some fans thought the get-together meant something bigger was in the works, especially after Brown, 49, (aka Scary Spice) reshared the clip with the hashtag “#tourdatescomingsoon.”

Brown also recently hinted at a potential reunion tour  in honor of the group’s 30th anniversary, which got her kicked out of their group chat .

The Spice Girls at the London Olympics

The Spice Girls rose to fame in the mid-’90s and quickly became one of the biggest-selling female pop groups of all time.

They officially disbanded in 2000, and the last time all five of them performed together was in 2012 at the London Olympics .

While Victoria has not taken the stage since, the other members went on tour without her in 2019.

Ty Majeski wins the ASA STARS race at Madison to stay unbeaten in Wisconsin in 2024

sport tour vysocina

TOWN OF RUTLAND – Ty Majeski is at that point already in 2024.

How many races has the 29-year-old racer from Seymour won while moonlighting from his fulltime job in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series?

“Ummm … I uhhh … I don’t know. Six maybe?” Majeski said after winning the ASA STARS National Tour Capital 200 on Friday night at Madison International Speedway.

“I know we haven’t lost in Wisconsin. I think it’s six.”

Results: ASA STARS National Tour Capital 200

Among those was the ASA Midwest Tour race at this half mile in May and the opening round of the Red, White & Blue series Thursday night at Wisconsin International Raceway.

Majeski will go for three Wisconsin wins in four days when the series races the Father’s Day 100 on Sunday at the Milwaukee Mile.

“Our cars are just really fast right now,” Majeski said. “I feel like the (STARS Tour) tire sort of played into our package, what we do. Whatever it is, it’s really worked. Our cars are as good as they’ve ever been right now.”

Although the stats show he led the final 136 laps and ran away the last 30 or so, he was lucky. Luckier than Cole Butcher, for sure.

When Michael Bilderback’s car erupted and spewed oil and water all over the back stretch, Butcher was the first one to it and slammed the wall hard in Turn 3.

“He was probably our main competition at the time,” said Majeski, who won the STARS title last season and is racing a limited schedule. “It would have been interesting to see how the race progressed."

Majeski had started on the pole and settled in behind Butcher, the championship leader coming into the night, after the green flag.

“I was kind of smelling something a couple of laps in advance. Is it your car? You don’t really know," Majeski said. "So I was kind of looking for something. Off of Turn 2, I kind of saw a haze and had an inclination that something was maybe happening.

“I had a big gap out back, so I just pulled low down the straightaway and lifted (off the throttle), and all of a sudden he went straight into the fence. I went through it, but thankfully I was low enough to where it didn’t carry me into the fence.”

From there it was a matter of holding off Casey Roderick through a couple of restarts. Roderick got almost most of the way alongside Majeski after a restart with 41 laps to go but couldn’t make the pass. That was really his only shot.

“I really thought so,” said Roderick, who finished second by 3.62 seconds. “He was just so strong. I knew I only had one small window to get it done….

“It was fun racing with him there for a minute."

Austin Nason finished third. He is a past winner at both Madison and the Milwaukee Mile, where the series races Sunday.

“We built a brand new car again to go to Milwaukee,” Nason said. “Last time we built a new car, we won.”

Majeski heads to the Mile with one of his favorite cars in the Gearheadz Racing stable, the one with which he won the last two times he raced there, in 2021 and ’23.

“That car is only going to get run a couple of times a year,” Majeski said. “We only run it at Milwaukee and the Snowball (Derby in Pensacola, Florida). We’ll run it at Milwaukee and let it sit until the Snowball.”

Roderick was Majeski’s biggest competition at the Mile last year.

Mark Cavendish knighted after postponing retirement to beat Tour de France record

Mark Cavendish will head to the Tour de France later this month seeking to become not only the first rider to win 35 stages of cycling’s most famous race, but the first to win one as a Knight Bachelor. The Manxman said he was “truly humbled and thankful” after being knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours on Friday night.

Cavendish , 39, is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter in the history of cycling, having won 164 races and counting during an extraordinary career on track and road in what has been a golden era for the sport in Britain. Cavendish joins fellow cyclists Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Jason and Laura Kenny, and Sarah Storey in receiving the honour.

Of that group, only Cavendish and Storey are still active, with Cavendish eyeing up what would be a record-breaking 35th stage win at this summer’s Tour, which begins in Florence in a couple of weeks. Cavendish is tied with Belgian great Eddy Merckx on 34 Tour stage wins, having taken his first as a 23-year-old in 2008.

The 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner, who now races for Team Astana Kazakhstan, announced his decision to retire in May last year, only to reverse it after he crashed out of last year’s Tour one day after his chain skipped when he looked as if he would win his record-breaking Tour stage into Bordeaux.

Cavendish is competing at the Tour de Suisse this week, from where he reacted to the news of his knighthood. “I can only say that I’m truly humbled to be honoured by His Majesty The King,” he said. “It’s always been the biggest privilege to represent my country, and seeing cycling as the sport, pastime and mode of transport I’ve given my life to grow in Great Britain during the span of my career, has given me joy and pride beyond words. I’m truly thankful to everybody that has lived this journey with me.”

Cavendish’s knighthood will be seen as deserved recognition by the vast majority of those who have competed with or against him. Cavendish is a notoriously spiky character who wears his heart on his sleeve. But he is also well-loved for his passion, his generosity to team-mates, his loyalty and his fighting spirit, in particular the way he came back from years of debilitating injury and illness to win four stages of the Tour in 2021.

That extraordinary comeback was the subject of a Netflix documentary, released last summer, which chronicled Cavendish’s life growing up on the Isle of Man, his parents’ divorce, his move to Manchester as a young rider to join the fledgling British Cycling academy, his golden period between 2007 and 2015 when he racked up 133 victories, including the 2011 world title in Copenhagen, stages of all three grand tours, and victory at Milan-San Remo in 2009, before his descent into clinical depression after crashes and illness derailed his career.

The one notable absence from Cavendish’s glittering CV is an Olympic gold medal. He missed out on the track in 2008, when he and Wiggins were reigning world champions in the Madison, and on the road in 2012 when his team-mates failed to deliver him to the Mall for a sprint he was widely expected to win. In 2016, Cavendish won silver in the omnium.

But the Tour remains the pinnacle of cycling, and Cavendish - who is married with four children - has already sealed his legend there, regardless of what happens this summer. Christian Prudhomme, the Tour’s race director, described the Manxman as “the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour and of cycling” in 2021.

This year’s race, which begins in Florence on June 29, features eight flat stages, the first of which comes on July 1 with a sprint into Turin.

Dot Tilbury, 74, Cavendish’s first coach while leading cycling races for children at the Isle of Man National Sports Centre, said everyone on the island would be rooting for him.

“When I was coaching Mark as a boy, I had no doubt that he would go on to achieve amazing things,” she said. “He was very passionate and driven – he would study courses to work out the best way around and research the latest gadgets to help him succeed.”

She added: “Everyone in the Isle of Man, from young children to grannies, is so very proud of what he’s achieved. He has inspired many children to think that you don’t have to come from a big city to go after what you want in life.”
