Joe Lycett packs his bags for the much-awaited new series of Travel Man: 48 Hours In... But which other TV travelogues get a 5-star rating?

After Richard Ayoade handed over hosting duties to Lycett back in December 2021, we were primed and ready to en vacance  in comedic fashion once again. And with his 96 Hours In Iceland  episode offering a tantalising glimpse of things to come, all we had to do was wait for our seat number to be called.

Alas, with the way of the world around that time being less than favourable for travelling, we’ve had to wait until now to go off on our TV jollies with the lovable Lycett.  

But this is one hollibob that’s been well worth the wait. Lycett will jibe and imbibe his way around the world with a bevy of guest stars at his side, including Aisling Bea, Katherine Parkinson and Mo Gilligan. First up on the itinerary is a jaunt to the Basque Country for pintxos (small bar snacks), apple wine and many, many more pintxos. Jealous, us? Yes, absolutely.

This first episode sees Lycett accompanied by comedian James Acaster, who knows a thing or two about the foods of the world, as evidenced by his Off Menu podcast. However, with his self-proclaimed favourite food being, um, ice cream, will he get stuck into everything delectable the Basque Country has to offer?

British institution and Absolutely Fabulous legend Joanna Lumley follows the historical Silk Road trail from Venice to Uzbekistand, by way of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Kyrgyzstan. Phew! But it’s all in a day’s work for our Patsy, who somehow balances unveiling the majesty of these far-flung lands with looking very majestic indeed, more often than not atop a mountain, holding an eagle. As you do. Her closer-to-home series,  Travels In My Own Land , is also available in the ITV Hub.

Fellow sartorialist Michael Portillo – just LOOK at those chinos – gets all dressed up to... sit on a train. But there’s a method to the locomotion as Portillo is a storyteller extraordinaire, retracing the steps outlined in 19th-century cartographer George Bradshaw’s series of travel guide books with schoolboy enthusiasm. It’s the TV equivalent of the best cup of tea ever.

Broadcast date and guests revealed for joe lycett's new series of travel man.

The date has been confirmed for the new series of Travel Man. This will be the first full series hosted by Joe Lycett following a Christmas special in Iceland (the country not the shop) with Bill Bailey.

Travel Man finally starts on Channel 4 on Monday, 4th April at 8:30pm and in the first episode Lycett takes fellow comedian James Acaster to the Basque Country. Aisling Bea, Katherine Parkinson and Mo Gilligan are also in the series.

It's been a long wait for Lycett. It was announced that he was taking over from previous host Richard Ayoade back in July 2019 when the world was a very different place. At the time Lycett said:  “I’m beyond excited to take over the brilliant, charming show that Richard has nurtured. I’m less excited about the number of times I’m going to have to take off my shoes at Birmingham Airport.”

Birmingham comedian Lycett is busier than ever at the moment. He has a huge national tour in the pipeline as well as other TV projects, some of which involve the kind of bold, inventive antics he has become known for.

He explains in a new interview in the Observer what the tour is about. It is built around a stunt he has worked on for three years, which began when he realised he’d paid too much for his house, but ended up as, “a love letter to my local community – it’s the thing I’ve made that I’m most proud of.” 

Lycett is not just a stand-up comedian and campaigner/prankster. He has also directed music videos for rising music stars. He directed the music video for Litany’s track Uh-huh , which featured Katherine Ryan, Ru-Paul’s Drag Race star Vinegar Strokes and a cameo from Joe himself. He also made the surreal video for Katy J Pearson’s track Miracle which featured a life-size toy cow called Muriel and some shanty singers.
