What is a Headshop?

A head shop, commonly known as a "smoke shop" is a retail store that specializes in products for smoking tobacco, cannabis, and other accessories in this counterculture. Many head shops also carry Kratom, CBD, and other consumables - depending on the legality within their state. Smoke Shops have been around for decades, and are popular destinations for stoners and the smoking enthusiasts to find products to fit their lifestyle.

Enjoy the Quiet Side of Highway 101 on a Road Trip Down the Oregon Coast

With small towns, craft breweries, and quiet beaches, the Oregon Coast is tailor-made for road-tripping.

Writer Johannes Lichtman was born in Stockholm and raised in California. He was named a "5 Under 35" recipient by the National Book Foundation in 2019. His work has appeared in Travel + Leisure , Los Angeles Review of Books , Oxford American , and elsewhere.

The Nestucca River was quiet except for a great blue heron that unfurled its massive wings and flapped away disgruntled every time our kayaks approached. On one side of me was Mike, my best friend and travel companion on my trip down the Oregon Coast. On the other side was Ryan Fox, our eminently personable guide, who, bearded and rugged, looked as you would expect an adventurer to look—except for his toenails, which were painted orange. "My wife did it once, like, three years ago as a joke," he said. "But I liked how it looked. I guess it stuck."

As we paddled along in the cool air—despite being early August, it was a pleasant 65 degrees—we watched Fox chase down a renegade beer bottle someone had thrown in the water. We listened as he told us about Bayocean, an early-20th-century "Atlantic City of the West" that fell into the sea after developers failed to account for the erosive effect their work would have on the land.

The breeze picked up; paddling got harder. Fox pointed to a van parked by a modest waterfront house. "That belongs to one of the foremost Bigfoot experts," he said, before qualifying, "in Oregon."

Just as the headwind was starting to wear out my arms, the river bent under a bridge and we came out into a patch of windless, glassy water. Wordlessly, all of us stopped paddling, put our feet up, and drifted back toward the dock where we'd rented the kayaks. The birds broke the quiet with happy calls, and for a few minutes, I forgot that there was anything wrong in the world. When we reached the dock, an annoyed teenager pulled our boats in and informed us that they had already closed for the day. His tone suggested: "I have been standing here for fifteen minutes waiting for you—and then you just stop paddling."

Oregon's 362 miles of publicly accessible coastline offer one of the most scenic drives in America . Weaving through one-light beach towns and mountainous conifer forests, past sky-high dunes and rugged sea cliffs, this stretch of U.S. Highway 101 is the state's less crowded answer to California's famous Pacific Coast Highway . Oregon is also more affordable than its southern neighbor, which has given rise to a vibe that's at once inviting and refreshingly offbeat.

Our first stop on the weeklong trip was the northernmost city on the coast, Astoria. Founded as a fur-trading outpost in 1811 by John Jacob Astor—then the richest man in the country—Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Nicknamed Little San Francisco for its steep hills, fog, and Victorian houses, this port of just 10,000 people has the feel of a much bigger city.

Sitting at the edge of a dock jutting 600 feet into the Columbia River, the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa was once the site of a fish-packing plant, like many buildings on the waterfront. Astoria was a hub for fishing and canning until the 1970s, and the pier was home to the Union Fishermen's Co-Operative Packing Co., which was organized by a group of the city's fishermen, most of them foreign-born, in 1897. From the guest rooms, you can see what those men a century earlier would have seen: boats humming along the busy Columbia, morning mist floating above the water, and the evergreen coast of Washington in the distance. You can also see one big thing they wouldn't have: the behemoth Astoria-Megler Bridge, completed in 1966, which seems as if it's crossing right overhead.

7 Best Small Towns on the West Coast for Wine Tasting, Whale Watching, and Beautiful Views

For dinner, we took a short walk to Bridgewater Bistro, a former cannery reimagined as an airy loft with wooden beams and big windows facing the river. I have long held that at restaurants with water views, you can predict the quality of the meal based on how well the staff manages the blinds. Neglect can leave a blinding glare; draw them too readily, and the view might as well be of a parking lot. At Bridgewater, the hostess managed the blinds like a post-op IV drip, carefully calibrating our view of a ship several stories tall making its way down the river as the sunset turned the water orange.

Sure enough, the food was equally thoughtful, with original takes on local favorites, like zesty avocado toast piled with freshly caught Dungeness crab, spritzed with lemon, and served on house-baked French bread. I gloated that my hypothesis had held up, but Mike was not impressed. He suggested that there were more obvious indicators that our meal would be good—like the menu.

In the morning, we borrowed a pair of the hotel's bikes and rolled down the boardwalk, which runs alongside the trolley tracks into the city center. Like San Francisco's cable car, the Astoria trolley is today used more for touristing than for transportation. Another similarity to San Francisco : a devastating fire in 1922 forced Astorians to rebuild the city. As we explored, we noticed that much of modern Astoria's architecture can be traced to that period, with former banks, department stores, and hotels from the 20s and 30s filling up with microbreweries, restaurants, and cafés to feed the burgeoning tourism industry.

Oregon is arguably the craft-beer capital of the United States: the fertile Willamette Valley grows a sixth of the nation's hops, and the state is home to more than 300 breweries.

The tallest among them is the eight-story, Gothic Revival Astor Building, built in 1924; following a 2015 renovation, it's now home to apartments and shops, including the Naked Lemon bakery. When we pulled up, owner Aleesha Serrita Nedd welcomed us with lemon-curd vanilla cupcakes, decadently loaded with buttercream and packing an explosive, citrusy punch. "I have to warn people they're not like grocery-store cupcakes," Nedd explained with a smile.

We tried (but failed) to pace ourselves as Nedd, a native Astorian, told us about starting the bakery as a pop-up in 2016. Demand grew so quickly that she quit her day job and moved into a storefront, where she serves classics alongside a rotation of originals that play on the Oregonian culinary tradition of weird new combinations. The "gas station French macaron" is perhaps the only gourmet pastry around made from Flamin' Hot Cheetos and cheddar powder filling.

Like New Yorkers with pizza and Texans with barbecue, Oregonians can be snobs when it comes to beer. That's because Oregon is arguably the craft-beer capital of the United States: the fertile Willamette Valley grows a sixth of the nation's hops, and the state is home to more than 300 breweries.

One could build a trip entirely around the superb breweries that populate the coast, but the crown jewel of the regional beer scene, the one that attracts visitors from around the globe, is De Garde Brewing, which, despite its size—the whole operation is only seven people—is frequently ranked among the best in the world.

To visit, we took a windy stretch of Highway 101 an hour and a half south from Astoria. Just after Cannon Beach —which, as the closest seaside town to Portland, is usually the most packed—the day-tripper crowd thinned out, the traffic evaporated, and staggering views of the water popped up at nearly every turn in the cliff-top road. We cut inland to the dairy-farming town of Tillamook, where De Garde's tasting room is housed in a former Napa Auto Parts store. It seemed like a pedestrian site for a pilgrimage—until we sampled the Broken Truck wild ale, which was unlike any beer I've had. Super dry but noticeably hoppy, it tasted like a crisp ale crossed with a white wine.

Head brewer and owner Trevor Rogers explained that he and his wife and co-owner, Linsey Rogers, had backgrounds in wine and decided to bring their knowledge of viticulture to beer. They chose Tillamook because of its climate, which is especially well-suited to spontaneous fermentation, as well as its proximity to the hops and high-end Pinot grapes of the Willamette Valley.

De Garde's beer is made in wine barrels using native yeast, a painstakingly slow process that takes one to five years to produce a tiny batch. To taste it, you have to come to Tillamook. The result is, as Rogers puts it, "a pretty unique representation of place."

"This," Mike said as he wrapped some gauze around his bleeding hand, "is a great hotel." Shortly after we'd checked in to Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa, in the fishing town of Pacific City, Mike had cut himself on his razor while rifling around in his suitcase. We called the front desk for some bandages, and the attendant was at our door seemingly a minute later. She was kind and attentive, and appeared deeply concerned about Mike's hand (far more than I was, having had 20 years of experience watching him injure himself and quickly recover). Her care was indicative of the attention to detail we'd enjoy during our stay.

Our trip led us past too many stunning overlooks and blissfully open state parks to count.

Headlands, a 33-room resort that opened in 2018, sits right on Cape Kiwanda, a state natural area featuring a 240-foot-high sand dune, lots of tide pools, and a public but relatively quiet beach, which after nightfall lights up with campfires. We admired how so many hotel details—locally sourced Douglas fir wood in the lobby, shower curtains that pull back to reveal ocean views, in-room wall racks for bikes and surfboards—served to highlight the landscape.

We took an invigorating ride down the beach on fat-tire bikes we borrowed from the hotel, then met up with the aforementioned Ryan Fox, who leads adventures for Headlands guests. After kayaking, we hiked up the Great Dune at Cape Kiwanda. ("At least that's what people call it," Fox said. "It doesn't really have a name.") The sandy crests had the wind-smoothed texture of, as Mike put it, the planet Tatooine, "where the Jawas sell the droids to Luke Skywalker." (You never know when a working knowledge of the topography of Star Wars planets will come in handy.)

From the peak, we took in a dizzying panorama of cliffs, ocean, and forest. Teenagers hurtled down the dune while their friends took pictures. A flock of pelicans—"the hound dogs of the sea," Fox called them—sat on the water, mirroring a pack of surfers waiting 20 yards away.

After sleeping to the sound of the lapping sea, Mike and I headed out for an early hike at Cape Lookout. A morning drizzle pitter-pattered against the Douglas fir and Sitka spruce overhead, but the canopy was so thick that we barely felt the water. We were told that the loop was sometimes crowded with tourists, but the only sound that morning was our own footsteps, and the lightly falling rain.

Our trip was filled with small towns like Depoe Bay, a whale-watching destination where we spent a night nestled between the woods and a Big Sur–like cove. But the tiniest was the village of Yachats (ya- hots ), a quaint mile-long strip bisected by Highway 101. We spent an afternoon perusing the shops and lunched at Yachats Brewing, where we ate chicken-salad sandwiches and drank Thor's Well IPA, the Yachats take on the unofficial state beverage.

It made sense to follow the beer up with a stop at the actual Thor's Well, a nearby rock formation where waves spout out like a geyser. We visited around high tide, when the water puts on quite a show, yet had no trouble finding a good vantage point—in part because this corner of Oregon has no shortage of natural attractions. Our trip led us past too many stunning overlooks and blissfully open state parks to count, including the Devil's Punchbowl, Devil's Churn, and Devil's Elbow, which suggest that Satan is a surprisingly big part of coastal geography.

As we approached our final stop, the landscape changed again. Miles and miles of sandy ridges lined the horizon; roadside signs offered ATV rentals to explore the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

The economy of Coos Bay, the most populous city on the coast, has long revolved around logging, but visitors are now arriving in increasing numbers for four-wheeling, hiking, and clamming, and to escape to new accommodations such as Bay Point Landing, a modern camping resort with Airstream suites, RV spaces, and tiny-house lodgings. Our cabin was designed in a chic Scandinavian style, with a private firepit from which to watch the sun set over the bay.

Fifteen minutes south of Bay Point lie three of oceanside state parks, crowned by the storybook Shore Acres. Lumber tycoon Louis J. Simpson built Shore Acres in the early 20th century as a private estate, and its botanical gardens are full of flowers and trees that he collected on his travels around the world. As we walked the well-manicured paths, the tranquil Japanese pond was a calming contrast to the untamed forest and cliffs that flanked the grounds.

That night, back at the cabin, we built a fire, popped open a bottle of De Garde, and toasted our luck at getting the chance to spend so much time together. We sat watching the fire crackle in the pit, the water flowing down the bay, and the seagulls gliding in the wind, all by ourselves.

A road trip down the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge parallels the popular (and very busy) waterfall-filled Oregon side. When you hear about the Columbia River Gorge you usually think about that side, lined with waterfalls such as the renowned Multnomah Falls . But on the other side of the river, things are a bit slower and every bit as scenic. It’s just drier as you drive east. The Columbia River Gorge, Washington side begins just east of Vancouver, Washington , part of the greater Portland area. Confusing? Yes. But remember that the Columbia River marks the boundary between Washington and Oregon in this area and Vancouver is just a five-minute drive across the bridge from Portland, Oregon. An orientation map will help you make decisions about your road trip.

This route can be driven one way in two hours (but that doesn’t include any stops) or serve as a destination for a weekend getaway at a scenic lodge. To enjoy the drive, plan at least one day. Come along with me and discover the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge from Vancouver, Washington to Maryhill.

Entering the columbia river gorge washington.

You’ll be traveling east on SR 14 out of Vancouver (also called the Lewis and Clark Highway). Before you enter the official Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, you’ll want to stop and check out the offerings of Camas and Washougal.

Camas has a quaint downtown area. Established in 1883 as a mill town, it has been revitalized to include fine shopping, dining, and services while still maintaining its historic feel. The Camas Hotel, a century-old, beautifully remodeled European boutique-style hotel is located downtown.

On First Fridays, downtown galleries, shops, and restaurants stay open late into the evening. During the summer, Camas has a seasonal farmer’s market.

Just a little farther down the highway, you’ll see Washougal, home to the Pendleton Woolen Mills factory and outlet shop.

Just across the parking lot from the Pendleton factory, you can “hike the dike” along the Columbia. Park at Pendleton and take the pedestrian tunnel to the walking and biking trail. The Columbia River Dike Trail , also known as the Captain William Clark Park Trail and the Cottonwood Beach Trail, follows the Columbia River from Steamboat Landing Park to the border of the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge .

A great place to stop is the Captain William Clark Regional Park at Cottonwood Beach. There is a structure resembling a native longhouse, dugout canoes, and interpretive signs telling you a bit about Captain Clark’s explorations and travel in the area.

You’ll encounter art with your wildlife as you walk the trails of the Steigerwald Preserve. The entrance is just past Washougal on SR 14, on the right. This beautiful preserve used to be a lowland dairy farm. No dogs are permitted at this scenic spot. The entrance is free. Also, at this point, you will be entering the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area .

Stopping at Cape Horn

You must carefully pull over at Cape Horn for an iconic view up the river and Gorge. Cape Horn, on the other side of the road, is a massive basalt cliff outcropping. There are popular forested trails in the area named for the cape.

Beacon Rock

Beacon Rock State Park is on SR 14 in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area about 35 miles east of Vancouver. There are restrooms and a picnic area.  The park is named for Beacon Rock, an 850-foot high basalt volcanic plug. You can hike up Beacon Rock (3/4-mile trail) for an expansive view of the Columbia Gorge. If you do, allow an hour or more for the narrow, steep trail and gawking at the sights when you get to the top. (Washington Discovery Pass needed)

North Bonneville Trails

As you drive along, you’ll nice the sign to North Bonneville. The community of North Bonneville was developed as a construction town next to the massive Bonneville Lock, Dam, and powerhouse. It is still a residential town featuring a golf course and an interesting trail system , with some trails dotted by Sasquatch chainsaw art. Several of the trails link with the Fort Cascades Trail, which is a perfect trail on a warm day. There is a gas station just off the highway at North Bonneville.

The Fort Cascades trail is a pleasant, meandering, flat trail with stops to learn about local history. Fort Cascades was an army fort built in 1855 to protect a portage road around the lower cascades rapids of the Columbia River.  The fort burned down in 1856, was abandoned in 1861, and then flooded out in 1894. The Fort Cascades Trail will take you past these historic sites (don’t expect to see remains of buildings), beautiful mossy rocks and woods, and eventually leads into the town of North Bonneville.

On the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge there are plenty of trails to hike. The Fort Cascades Trail is an easy, flat venture into the mossy woods. Photo by Elizabeth R Rose

Bonneville Dam Visitors Center

Just north of Fort Cascades is the Washington entrance to the Bonneville Dam Washington Shore Visitors Center . Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., this complex offers an easily accessible view of the second powerhouse. Inside the fish-viewing building and the adjacent Visitor Orientation building, are exhibits on the history of fish in the area and how the hydropower plant works. (No charge)

Bridge of the Gods

If you want to drive over to I-84 on the Oregon side of the gorge, now is your chance ($2.00 toll). The Bridge of the Gods to Cascade Locks is the third oldest bridge on the Columbia River.

Bridge of the Gods

This historic Bridge of the Gods takes you from the Washington side to the Oregon site. Photo by Elizabeth R Rose

The Bridge of the Gods serves as the link for Pacific Crest Trail hikers to cross between Oregon and Washington. You’ll hear about the bridge in Cheryl Strayed’s book, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail , and the movie, Wild , starring Reese Witherspoon.

When in Cascade Locks, lunch with a view is an option at the Bridgeside Restaurant. The burgers are great and if you save room, there are tempting pies. Seasonally, local Native Americans sell fresh-caught salmon in the parking lot.

After your break, head back over the bridge to continue east on SR-14.

Stevenson and Skamania Lodge

Keeping on SR-14 on the Washington side, on the outskirts of Stevenson, you’ll find a sign on the left to Skamania Lodge and the Columbia River Gorge Interpretive Center . Skamania Lodge, built in the style of the grand park lodges, has a marvelous view of the gorge, excellent dining, a golf course, and a zip line course.

This is an ideal place to stay if you want to make this drive into a multi-day getaway. They even have “ tree houses ” will full amenities.

Stevenson is a nice stop for a view of the Columbia River and if you are lucky, you’ll see a riverboat docked at the Stevenson Landing Pier. If you are just making this a day trip, lunch in Stevenson would make for another good stop. Walking Man Brewing on SW First Street is an area favorite with a dog-friendly beer garden and weekend live music. Big River Grill on SW Second Street is known for fish and northwest cuisine. It offers a good selection of northwest wines and microbrews.

Columbia River Gorge Washington Winetasting

Continue on with the winding road of SR-14.  You’ll see several opportunities to stop and wine taste .  One we enjoyed discovering is small and homey with a gorgeous view. Aniche Cellars , with its all-female wine-making team , is located up the hill from the Columbia River at 71 Little Buck Creek Rd, Underwood, Washington.  It’s off Cook-Underwood Road and tastings are by reservation.

Hood River Bridge and Windsurfers

From Stevenson east on the Columbia River, you’ll often see whitecaps. It’s windy and that provides good opportunities for windsurfers and kiteboarders. On the Washington side, just before you approach the bridge to Hood River, you may catch the colorful boards with Mt. Hood in the background. A great photo op!

Hood River Windsurfing

At this point, if you want to visit Hood River, you can take the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge over to the Oregon side and then return to continue on to a fabulous winery with a river and mountain view.

Maryhill Winery and Maryhill Museum

To reach the Maryhill Winery , often the destination of day-trippers, follow SR-14 five miles past the bridge to The Dalles, Oregon (US 197). Maryhill Winery has a 4,000-seat amphitheater, picnicking on the spacious and scenic covered arbor, a self-service deli, and award-winning wines. If you enjoyed time in Vancouver’s Waterfront area, you may have stopped by the Maryhill tasting room there. But this is the actual winery and when you taste, consider picking up a couple of bottles of their red blend to take home with you.

You can also visit the unique Maryhill Museum of Art and Maryhill State Park. A full-scale replica of England’s famous Stonehenge is one mile from the state park. The museum, housed in a gracious Beaux-Arts mansion on 5,300 acres high above the Columbia River, opened to the public in 1940. The museum was founded by Northwest entrepreneur and visionary Sam Hill. Maryhill Museum of Art boasts a world-class permanent collection and rotating exhibitions worthy of the drive to visit.

Surprisingly, the museum collection contains more than 80 works by Rodin, including bronzes, terra cottas, plaster studies, and watercolor sketches. Photo by Elizabeth R Rose

Returning from the Columbia River Gorge Washington

The Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area ends at this point, yet there is much to explore on both sides of the Columbia River. If you want a speedier return to the Portland area, take the bridge at Hood River back to the Oregon side and drive I-84 west.

A road trip down the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge parallels the popular (and very busy) waterfall-filled Oregon side. When you hear about the Columbia River Gorge you usually think about that side, lined with waterfalls such as the renowned Multnomah Falls. But on the other side of the river, things are a bit slower and every bit as scenic. This is a handy guide to a scenic road trip with stops for hiking, wine tasting, and food.

St Petersburg Area

Our west coast Florida road trip started off in St Petersburg , a place that offers a perfect blend of culture, beach, and city life. The bulk of our time was spent digging into the downtown area and enjoying St Pete Beach, rather than traveling further afield.

That said, this area is fascinating and offers a variety of towns that each offer their own flare.

You could spend a week here and only scratch the surface. We’re offering you our highlights as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to venture further afield during your visit.

St Pete Highlights & Activities

Fort desoto park.

Lina Stock at Fort Desoto in St Petersburg, Florida

Located not too far south of St Pete Beach is the largest park within Pinnellas County, Fort Desoto. The park spans more than 1,000 acres and offers 5 interconnected islands to explore.

It offers some spectacular beaches, mangroves, wetlands, and wildlife opportunities, among other natural environments to admire.

Most notably, it offers the chance to tour the decommissioned historic Fort Desoto. Constructed in the late 1800s, this fort has played a key strategic role through many conflicts and occupations of the land it sits on.

Be sure to check out the many cannons and wander to the top of the fort where you’ll be awarded with panoramic views over the ocean and Tampa Bay.

Speed Boat Adventures

Speed boat tour in St Pete, Florida

One of the coolest ways to get out on the water in St Petersburg is by joining a follow the leader style speed boat tour with Speed Boat Adventures .

You’ll get your own speed boat that can seat up to 3 people, meaning you get to be the captain and are in full control of the boat.

You’ll follow a guide who will take you through several bays, under bridges and past dolphins while narrating the trip through speakers installed in each boat.

We had so much fun speeding around, looking at the beaches, wildlife, and areas around Tampa, Clearwater, and St Petersburg. Being in control of your own boat without having to worry about navigating unfamiliar waters makes this a thrilling adventure.

Don Cesar Day Pass

Don Cesar hotel in St Pete Beach, Florida - West Coast road trip

The Don Cesar is the most iconic hotel in St Petersburg and its commanding presence sits right on a spectacular stretch of powdery white sand on the Gulf of Mexico. It’s the perfect place to recharge and relax when traveling down the west coast of Florida.

If you’re not staying there it’s possible to purchase a day pass that will give you access to the pool area and beach. You’ll also be able to book spa appointments and enjoy a few other amenities during your visit. The day pass costs $75 per person and is available for purchase online or at the resort.

If you’d like to stay at the Don Cesar during your time in St Pete, consider booking the Life’s Reward Package. This includes a 2-night stay in a Dan-approved luxury suite with complimentary resort fees, complimentary Lionfish Larry valet parking and all of the Pink Palace perks.

You’ll also enjoy a daily $150 food and beverage credit to spoil yourself with coastal cocktails, beachside eats, fine dining, and a $250 recreation credit to treat yourself at the spa or go jet skiing on the Gulf of Mexico. You can book this package directly with the Don Cesar resort here , using the promo code REWARDS.

Bike Around Pass A Grille

Lina Stock biking around Pass A Grille in St Pete Beach, Florida

Some of the best stretches of beach in St Petersburg can be found around Pass A Grille and one of the best ways to explore them is by bike.

We rented bikes and cruised from the Don Cesar all the way to the end and back one afternoon. This gave us the freedom to stop whenever we wanted without worrying about parking, which can be a headache.

In doing this we were able to see several different places in the area and enjoy the different boardwalks too. Be sure to pack a beach towel so you can spend some time relaxing and playing in the waves too.

The James Museum

Lina Stock viewing art at The James Museum in St Petersburg, Florida

The James Museum is one of those museums that you’re not sure you’ll like and then it totally surprises you. We spent 2 hours here because the art is incredible. Not only is the detail unreal, but each piece tells the story of the people it features.

The work in this museum is mesmerizing, telling stories of the Native Americans and how they used the land across North America. Of course, the art also carries you through history, from before colonial times, during, and after, taking you on an emotional journey.

Personally, if you only have time for one museum when you visit St Petersburg, I’d recommend this one, even though there are others in town.

Dali Museum

The Dali Museum in St Petersburg, Florida

The Dali Museum is home to the largest collection of artist Salvador Dali’s work outside of Spain. A surrealist known for his technical skill and bizarre images; his work will take you on a bit of a magic carpet ride.

This museum offers large, tall ceiling galleries with ample room to observe and reflect on the pieces that are on display.

During our visit, we also had the opportunity to experience the temporary Van Gogh Alive exhibit. This display brought many of the works of the famed artist to a larger-than-life-size set to music from the era, as well as narrations from Van Gogh’s journals.

St Pete Pier

St Pete Pier at sunset

New to the St Petersburg landscape is the St Pete Pier. A place where people can come together to enjoy the water and culture of this area. One of the things we loved about the pier was that is mainly pedestrian, so you’re not competing for space with vehicles.

Locals utilize the pier for biking, walking, and rollerblading. It offers a few restaurants, a bar, a beach, and numerous grassy parks. We visited the pier in the evening, intent on exploring in the golden light and watching the sun go down.

Not only did we get a spectacular sunset, but we enjoyed watching dolphins swim in the waters right off the pier, too!

Participate in the Gulp Coast Challenge

A flight of beer from Green Bench Brewing in St Petersburg, Florida

If you like craft beer (who doesn’t?), then you’ll want to join in on the Gulp Coast Challenge during your visit to the west coast of Florida. Before you start, stop in at any craft brewery or tourism office to pick up your passport.

This book outlines all of the participating breweries and what you can expect to find there. Each offers a unique spin on beer and an opportunity to connect with local brewers.

We personally enjoyed the varying atmosphere at each brewery we visited, with each one offering its own form of city oasis to enjoy.

Where to Eat in the St Pete Area

Mojito at Doc Ford's Rum Bar at St Pete Pier in Florida

  • IL Ritorno – This Italian restaurant features homemade pasta and traditional Italian dishes with a seafood flair. Everything we ordered here was delicious and we highly recommend you eat here during your visit to St Petersburg. It is a busy place, so be sure to make reservations.
  • The Society Table – Located at the Don Cesar hotel, this poolside café offers a variety of seafood dishes and sandwiches in a relaxed setting.
  • Snapper’s Sea Grill – If you’re looking for fresh-caught seafood, then you’ll want to put this place on your list! Affectionately known as the ‘Gem of St. Pete Beach Restaurants’, you really cannot go wrong.
  • Bodega – This place offers traditional Cuban dishes in a street setting and it is wildly popular. We suggest ordering the Cuban and a hibiscus soda Fresca.
  • Doc Ford’s Rum Bar and Grille – This place is all about the atmosphere as it’s located on the water along St Pete Pier. Serving up some amazing seafood dishes, the signature Yucatan shrimp are to die for, you can order any type of rum-inspired drink, too.

Where to Stay in the St Pete Area

Upham Beach Inn in St Pete Beach, Florida

Accommodation options are really endless, from city life spaces to beachside getaways. We opted for a VRBO vacation rental versus a hotel during our stay in St Petersburg and were able to find the perfect balance by staying on St Pete’s Beach. We could walk to the beach and were only a short drive to downtown St Petersburg.

Our vacation rental was a super cute, newly remodeled studio in a complex that offered a great pool and free parking.

Sarasota Area – Florida Gulf Coast Road Trip

If you’re looking for a destination with a lot to do but that also offers diversity, Sarasota is a good one. The area offers a rich history paired with stunning beaches and a very upscale vibe.

Getting out of the city affords the chance to discover smaller communities like Venice, where you can search the beaches for shark teeth, or Englewood, where you can enjoy tasty food and a quieter atmosphere.

We loved that we were able to bounce easily between city life and nature here, which gives a fantastic balance for any road trip. Below you’ll find our highlights from 3 days in the area to get you started on your own planning.

Sarasota Highlights & Activities

The ringling museum.

Lina Stock looking at a circus mural at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida

The first thing we did when we arrived in Sarasota was head straight for the Ringling Museum ! This museum that is dedicated to the history of the circus sits on what was once the massive personal estate of John Ringling.

Give yourself several hours to visit, as the grounds feature the circus museum, personal residence of John Ringling known as the Ca’ d’Zan, a massive art museum, and several acres of lush gardens to explore.

Sunset on Siesta Key

Sunset on Siesta Key Beach in Florida

When the sun sets in Sarasota, the place to be is on Siesta Key . It is here that you’ll find miles of gorgeous white sand beaches that set the perfect stage for sunsets that melt into the water.

Sprinkle in some palm trees, colorful lifeguard stations, lapping ocean waves and you have the perfect place to end your day. We recommend getting there early, around 1 hour or more before sunset to ensure that you can find a nice location that is close to the water.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Lina Stock at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida- Gulf Coast road trip

You don’t have to be a plant aficionado to appreciate all that you can find in the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens . However, you will find yourself in awe at the stunning collection of orchids that it offers. This is the only botanical garden in the world that is dedicated to the display and study of epiphytes.

Being part of the Smithsonian Affiliate Network means this place is popular. If your schedule allows it, head to the gardens in the morning, right when they open. This will give you a chance to stay ahead of the crowds and the heat.

Mangrove Tunnel Kayaking on Lido Key

David Stock kayaking through a mangrove tunnel in Lido Key, Florida

To put a bit of adventure into your itinerary and get you out on the water, we’d highly recommend that you book a mangrove tunnel kayaking trip with Kayaking SRQ on Lido Key.

We spent 2 hours paddling the calm, protected waters on the Northside of Lido Key where we explored both open water and mangrove forests. The highlight, of course, is being able to paddle along a narrow and shallow channel tunnel within the mangrove trees.

Not only do you get an up-close look at some of the flora and fauna found along the west coast of Florida, but you’ll be led by a local guide that will offer some insight on what you are seeing both in the water and on land.

Search for Shark Teeth on Venice Beach

Shark teeth at Venice Beach, Florida- West Coast road trip

You cannot take a road trip along Florida’s Gulf coast without stopping in Venice to search for fossilized shark teeth on the beach! Before you head to the waters, start your day by stopping in at Shark Frenzy , a small shop located right in downtown Venice.

Here, you’ll want to rent or purchase a sifter and scoop. To increase your chances of good finds, you’ll need this stuff, trust us. The staff will show you how to use the tools and provide you with some insight on how to find areas that will provide a good opportunity for finding teeth.

Once on the beach, be sure to use sunscreen, wear UPF clothing, and stay hydrated. Looking for shark teeth is addicting, and you’ll find that hours have gone by without you even noticing. It’s easy to get burnt or dehydrated when you’re having so much fun mining teeth from the ocean.

We found more than 50 teeth the day we were in Venice and easily highlight this activity as one of our favorites out of 2 months spent road tripping through Florida.

Sarasota Ghost Tour

Discover Sarasota Tours SRQ trolly used for Ghost tours in Sarasota

If you like to hear tales of ghosts, then we’d recommend you join a ghost tour with Discover Sarasota Tours .

This 90-minute tour cruises around the city sharing all the fables, folklore, and ghost tales that Sarasota has to offer. It also includes complimentary beer or wine before your departure, so get there early!

We thought this tour was really fun as the hostess is very animated and personally connected to some of the stories that are shared about strange encounters in the city. We also liked the history aspect, shedding some light on how Sarasota was established.

Where to Eat in the Sarasota Area

Greek salad in Florida

  • Duval’s – Located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, this restaurant offers high-end seafood dishes with its own twist. Be sure to ask for a table outside to soak in the atmosphere of the city while you dine.
  • Blu Kouzina – If you want authentic Greek food, look no further. Eating at this restaurant will transport you to Greece with each bite. Be sure to order a Greek salad, it is to die for!
  • Sharky’s on the Pier – Who doesn’t love a beachside restaurant? Tropical drinks and seafood abound with fantastic views of Venice Beach.
  • Farlow’s on the Water – This place is a bit of a gem and a total hidden oasis. Located in Englewood, it’s worth the drive from Sarasota. Be sure to ask for a table on the water.

Where to Stay in the Sarasota Area

Vacation rental in Sarasota, Florida

Location is everything in Sarasota and you’ll have plenty of options from beachside to downtown. We chose to be just outside of the downtown, which was an ideal location for things both in the city and on the islands.

Sticking with our vacation rental theme we opted for another VRBO property and were able to score a super cool studio apartment in a historic Ringling building .

Fort Myers Area – Florida Gulf Coast Road Trip

Have you ever jived with a place even though you have never visited? This was Fort Myers for us. We’ve always known, somehow, that we would love this place and we totally did.

Why? Well, Fort Myers is a place that caters to outdoor and nature lovers. You can spend your time on the water, on remote islands, in state parks, hiking along trails, or paddling ancient waterways.

But not only that, it balances all of that with a social beach town and entertaining downtown area. You really can’t go wrong spending your time in the Fort Myers area.

We spent 4 days here, could easily spend a week or more, and are offering our highlights for you below.

If you’d like to see video from our visit to the Fort Myers area, click here to watch our Fort Myers Instagram stories

Fort Myers Highlights & Activities

Edison and ford winter estates.

Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, Florida

The first place we stopped in Fort Myers was the Edison and Ford Winter Estates . Not only is it a lovely estate, but you have the chance to immerse yourself into the lifestyle of the famed inventors.

Thomas Edison purchased the property in 1885, when he decided to start relocating to southwest Florida for the winter. A visit includes the opportunity to tour the grounds, houses, and learn more about the people behind the inventions.

We both found this visit fascinating and insightful; it was an experience that humanized the lightbulb and automobile for us. The property is stunning, including huge gardens that overlook the water. It’s a fantastic place to spend a morning and make sure you don’t miss the museum.

Sunset Wildlife Cruise

White pelicans on Florida's Gulf Coast

One of the best ways to experience Fort Myers is by getting out on the water at sunset. It is at this time that you can see thousands of seabirds flying to the various islands in the area to roost for the night. This makes for good sightings and prime light for photography opportunities.

It’s also a great way to see dolphins, as they frequent the waters close to shore where they hunt for fish.

You have a lot of options for cruises, so choosing one comes down to your preferences. We decided on a pontoon-style boat as it offers more stability and room for photography. This is how we ended up with Adventures in Paradise .

The motorized pontoon offered plenty of space for people that wanted to have drinks and enjoy the view while others focused on photography.

Jet Ski Dolphin Tour

Lina and David Stock on a jet ski tour in Fort Myers Beach, Florida

The morning we spent jet skiing with Wind and Water Sports was some of the most fun we’ve had on the water. Not only did we have the thrill of the jet ski, but this motorized eco-tour allowed us to cover a lot of ground and see a lot of wildlife.

There were times when pods of dolphins not only approached our jet skis but also played behind them while we cruised around. We saw giant rays playing in the water and hundreds of fish and bird species during our tour.

We were also able to access the historical midden area near Lovers Key State Park from the water, which is a challenge to access from land.

Our tour left directly from Fort Myers Beach and lasted 2 hours. David and I shared a jet ski and followed our guide, who had his own jet ski. While we didn’t book a private tour, we got one because nobody else had booked for that morning!

Lovers Key State Park

Lina Stock watching the sunset at Lovers Key State Park

The 712-acre Lovers Key State Park is one of the most beautiful state parks in Florida, offering a wide variety of activities, beaches, trails, and water access. You could easily spend a full day, if not more, exploring all it has to offer. For us, this park was where we were able to exhale and enjoy nature.

If you like to kayak, it’s possible to rent kayaks right in the park and then put in for some paddling on the Great Calusa Blueway. This is a great way to get on the water in a protected area and see Florida’s wildlife up close.

If you have time for nothing else, make a date to be here at sunset. It’s one of the most beautiful places in Florida to walk along the beach and see tall deadwood. Illuminated in the setting sun makes it an otherworldly experience.

Shelling on Sanibel & Captiva

Seashells washed up on the beaches of Sanibel Island, Florida - Gulf Coast

Located just off the coast are the islands of Sanibel and Captiva . If you like to wander the beach looking for ocean treasures, this is the place for you.

With miles and miles of beaches that face the Gulf of Mexico and unique geography that both invites and traps, these islands offer mounds of shells that wash up on its shores every day in the tides.

Of course, you’ll want to get up early to not only beat the crowds but also have a chance for the good finds. Be prepared to pay for parking and bring something to collect shells with. Either a bucket or bag will do fine.

We went early in the morning and drove as far north on Captiva Island as we could. Here we found few people and thousands of shells. As the morning went on, we beach hopped our way back along the Gulf side before heading off to explore other areas of Sanibel Island.

JN Ding Darling Wildlife Drive

Birds at the J.N. 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel, Florida

If you enjoy spending time in nature and seeing wildlife, as we do, then you’ll want to leave time to visit the 6,400-acre J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge . They offer a one-way drive that allows you to pull off anywhere along the way and observe what you see.

We enjoyed this drive so much we actually did it twice! Both times seeing many species of birds, alligators, and water critters. For the best light and wildlife spotting, go when they first open in the morning or later in the evening, when it’s cooler and the animals are on the move.

Something worth noting, if you have an America the Beautiful Annual Pass, it lets you into this reserve like it would any of the national parks in the USA.

Day Trip to Cayo Costa

Man holding sand dollar at Cayo Costa near Fort Myers, Florida - West Coast

Our last morning in Fort Myers we wanted to get a bit off-grid, so we booked a day trip out to Cayo Costa , a place that rests 24 miles from Fort Myers and is only accessible by boat. What an adventure that turned out to be.

Not only was our boat the only one there, but we got to experience the thrill of riding out a Florida storm on a remote island. Shortly after we arrived a decent storm system rolled in that brought high winds and completely soaked us.

Lucky for us, it was fleeting, and we spent the remainder of our time searching for large shells and sand dollars in large waves right off the beach. It was both exhausting and rewarding, we actually found a sand dollar!

Leaving the beaches of Cayo Costa we made our way to North Captiva, where we enjoyed lunch at a small beachfront restaurant before making our way back to Fort Myers.

Day Trip to Everglades

American alligator in Everglades National Park, Florida

If you find yourself with an extra day in Fort Myers, you may want to consider booking a day trip to Everglades National Park and Everglades City. Personally, this area deserves its own set of 2 to 3 days, but if you don’t have that a day trip can be a great way to dip your toes in.

There is a variety of day trips available from Fort Myers that will offer you transportation and a selection of activities. The main ones offer kayaking, a swamp buggy experience, and/or an airboat ride.

Key West Express

Fort Zachary Beach in Key West, Florida

Additionally, if you’re in Fort Myers and have the desire to visit the Florida Keys, it is possible to book transport there on the Key West Express . This catamaran-type ferry will have you in Key West in as little as 3.5 hours.

You will then have the option to stay a few hours before returning, making it a day trip, or you can plan ahead and stay a few days in Key West before returning again to Fort Myers. This is a great option if you want to visit the West Coast of Florida and see a bit of Key West too.

Where to Eat in the Fort Myers Area

Calamari at a restaurant in Florida

  • Pinchers – while you can find this locally owned seafood chain in a couple of different Fort Myers locations, we walked over to the location next to the Edison & Ford Museum in the downtown area. They are located on the water, so ask for a patio seat and order the seafood tower!
  • Snug Harbor – this little place is located in the marina area of Fort Myers Beach, across the street from the more commercial Nervous Nellie’s. They offer a lot of outdoor seating and some creative dishes with a waterfront view.
  • Mr. Tequila – if you’re craving Mexican food in Fort Myers Beach, this is the place to go! They serve authentic Mexican dishes, have a great outdoor patio, and endless chips with salsa.
  • Salty Crab – for seafood on the beach, this place is a great option. We loved sitting at the picnic tables with our feet in the sand. They have a great menu, order the fish tacos! And an extensive drink menu to go with it.
  • Doc Ford’s Sanibel – after enjoying Doc Ford’s in St Petersburg, we had to try it again in Sanibel and it was just as excellent the second time around. Again, order the Yucatan Shrimp , it’s an amazing dish. We also loved the Cuban sandwich and Caprese salad.

Vacation rental in Fort Myers Beach, Florida

If you want to be in the center of it all and within walking distance of things, then we would highly recommend you stay in Fort Meyers Beach. We were able to find a nice vacation rental right on the beach that offered free parking in an onsite lot.

Admittedly, it was loud in the evenings and into the night with people partying and loud music. If you’re a light sleeper, you might want to look at a different area.

It also possible to stay over on Sanibel, the mainland or a bit further down from the main area where all the bars and restaurants are. Depending on how you like to travel, this might be a better choice.

Expanding Your Florida West Coast Road Trip

The places highlighted above make up a small section of the wider west coast road trip route and if you find yourself with more time, you may want to expand on that to include more fabulous Florida vacation destinations.

We’ve personally explored more of the west coast and wanted to highlight a few areas that we really enjoyed, especially if you want to get off the beach and explore more of Florida’s natural side.

Everglades City

David Stock in Everglades National Park

If you continue heading south beyond Fort Myers, you’ll pass through Naples and eventually end in the small town of Everglades City. This is the end of the road on the west coast and your only option here is to turn back around and head north or head east towards the Atlantic Ocean.

But don’t let that deter you. We absolutely adored Everglades City, it’s funky and the official gateway to the west side of Everglades National Park. That leaves no shortage of things to do when you visit.

We’d recommend spending 2 to 3 days here, if you can, taking the time for a boat tour around the 10,000 islands, a kayak trip to see alligators up close, an airboat ride, and a swamp buggy adventure into the Big Cyprus National Preserve.

If you’d like to see video from our visit to Everglades City, click here to watch our Everglades City Instagram stories

Florida Panhandle

Beach in Destin, Florida

If you want to start at the furthest north part of this drive before continuing south, you’ll find yourself in the Florida Panhandle.

Starting in Pensacola, this section of the drive also traverses through Destin, Fort Walton, Panama City Beach , and the Forgotten Coast of Florida before taking a sharp turn south.

This area has spectacular beaches and crystal-clear water, but it also offers a completely different vibe than what you’ll find in the beach towns in south Florida. That alone makes it worth exploring, in our opinion.

Crystal River

Lina Stock at Three Sister Springs in Crystal River, Florida - Gulf Coast

Between the Forgotten Coast and Tampa is one of the most spectacular natural areas in Florida and the jewel of this area is Crystal River .

It is here that hundreds of manatees seek protection in the warm spring waters during the cold winter weather. It’s the only place in North America that you can swim with manatees .

But that’s not all this area offers, and you’ll find a different side to Florida here. Beautiful springs abound, rich indigenous history and plenty of wildlife make it both interesting and enjoyable.

What you won’t find are beaches. But instead, miles of undisturbed natural coastline offer thick mangrove forests and the ecosystems that come with them.

We fell in love with this area on our last visit and to date, is one of our favorite places in Florida. If you can add only a couple of days to your itinerary, add Crystal River. It fits in well as an addition to the St Petersburg to Fort Myers route we highlighted above.

NOTHING from Ft. Myers to Everglades City? Really??!!

I mean, you could go to Naples and Marco Island, but we opted not to. So rather than write about something we haven’t done, we opted to omit it. Cheers!

11 of the Best Route 66 side trips to add to your road trip

Whether it’s your first road trip across the US or you’re looking to spice up a regular drive along Route 66, adding some side trips into your itinerary makes a lot of sense for some people.

This article probably contains affiliate links.   This means that if you buy or book after clicking, I may get a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

While these destinations do make wonderful side trips off Route 66, it can eat into your Mother Road time so do be aware of that – some are close by and others might take up a full day or two. Coming from the UK with smaller distances, many of these feel like a long way to me, but I know for those who are used to it they can be doable!

Monument Valley

(You could feasibly explore Monument Valley from many jumping off points along New Mexico or Arizona . Mileage shown is from Chambers, just east of the Petrified Forest National Park , AZ to the border with Utah.)

Since Monument Valley requires a decent amount of driving to there and once there many people decide to stay overnight nearby. There isn’t a huge amount of choice but the iconic Gouldings Lodge has to be worth checking out if you can get a room.

Grand Canyon

Distance from Route 66: 60 miles (from Williams, AZ)

This is the classic side trip from the Route 66 road and it’s one that I definitely recommend since it’s actually not too far from the road and can be easily done in a day if you want to. We added it in to our first trip really easily.

You can take a hike, with many available for all abilities, or just explore the rim and visitor centers. Anyone with kids might like to get them to complete the Junior Ranger workbooks too which was a highlight for us! (yes, even me!)

You can find more about getting to Grand Canyon from Route 66 in this post here.

Horseshoe Bend

Another wonder of this area is Horseshoe Bend near Page, AZ. You’ll have seen it on countless travel magazines, Instagram and social media pictures and it’s an instantly reconizable place.

Distance from Route 66: 75 miles (from Kingman, AZ)

If you have more time you might like to check out some hikes around the area or take a guided tour of the dam. You don’t need to do tours to see it in all its glory though!

Distance from Route 66: 107 miles (from Kingman, AZ)

With shows, casinos and more neon than you can ever imagine – it’s somewhere that I personally had to see to believe! It’s not too far from Route 66 and if you want to stay overnight you can find plenty of deals from the big chain hotels.

Palm Springs, CA

Distance from Route 66: 55 miles (from San Bernardino, CA)

It’s not too far from Route 66, you could get there from San Bernardino before hitting LA proper or you could go from Needles on the East side although you’d miss much of the California Route 66 sights doing it that way.

Roswell, NM

If you’re traveling this way you might want to consider the next item on the list too.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM

Distance from Route 66: 235 miles (from Santa Rosa, NM)

Palo Duro Canyon State Park, TX

Probably the shortest side trip on this page and one that is more than easily doable even for those who are exploring on a tight schedule or perhaps those who are just exploring Route 66 through Texas .

Laura Ingalls Wilder home, MO

You can tour the house here and see her writing desk and room where the legacy began to take shape. Check out their website here .

Wichita Mountains wildlife refuge, OK

It’s home to lots of wildlife but most specifically it has bison herds which you may be able to see on some trails. The visitor center is a great place to start to get information on the trails and what to see when you’re there. Check their site out for more information here .

16 Things To Know When Visiting Niagara Falls USA Side

trip on the side

Some destinations are on everyone’s travel bucket list. The Niagara Falls are such a destination, every traveler dreams to see them at least once. For me, that was certainly the case. I had traveled the western parts of Canada before, but because of the Niagara Falls, I also really wanted to explore and travel to the eastern parts of Canada.

1. Are the Niagara Falls in Canada or the USA?

The Niagara Falls are a special place, as their location is spread across two countries: Canada and the USA. The Niagara Falls actually form the border between the USA and Canada, so they are located in both countries.

From both countries, the Niagara Falls are very easily accessible. Toronto on the Canadian side is the closest city to the falls, it takes about two hours to drive from Toronto to the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls.

2. How far is Niagara Falls from NYC?

trip on the side

From NYC to the Niagara Falls take almost 7 hours. You can easily rent a car and drive up if you are up for a road trip. The Niagara Falls are connected to many East Coast destinations, such as New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC via Amtrak train. Be aware that the drive from these cities takes a bit longer on the American side than on the Canada side.

You can also fly from NYC to Buffalo which only takes 1,5 hours and then drive from Buffalo to the American side of the Niagara Falls in less than 30 minutes.

3. Niagara Falls USA vs. Niagara Falls Canada

niagara falls usa 3

They share one thing, these amazing falls and the rather similar activities they both offer to experience these falls. But other than that, these two destinations are completely different. I visited both the Canadian side and the Niagara Falls USA side to check out which one I prefer the most.

I chose to stay at the USA side of the Niagara Falls, a random decision. But after exploring both sides of the Falls intensively, I can say I like the American side of the Niagara Falls much more and would definitely stay there again.

If you want that famous view of the Niagara Falls, that postcard and classic photo view, you have to be at the Canadian side, this is where you’ll get the best view of the Niagara Falls.

Straight after crossing the bridge, and the border, you’ll see that the Canadian side is all about (souvenir) shops, restaurants, bars and attractions. Clifton Hill is the world famous street of fun by the falls. It’s full of attractions and entertainment, like Ripley’s Believe it or Not. To me, it felt like walking through Las Vegas, so many lights and so much noice, it really felt like an amusement park to me and that is one of the reasons why I prefer the Niagara Falls USA side.

Exploring the American side of the falls, I immediately noticed how much more peaceful and quiet this side was. Their Niagara Falls State Park is the center place of most of the Niagara Falls NY attractions. It’s a large nature park where you can enjoy the falls and have a lovely walk around. Focused on nature’s beauty, that’s the way I like it.

Summed up, if you’re looking for entertainment and attractions, more dining options and shops, the Canadian side is your place to be. It’s also the busiest side of the falls, so be prepared for the crowds.

If you’re more like me, and want to visit the Niagara Falls because of its natural beauty, then the American side is your best choice. It’s much more quieter and focused on the nature and beauty of these falls.

4. Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass

niagara falls usa 4

You’re probably not leaving the falls without doing at least one of the amazing and thrilling attractions Niagara Falls USA has to offer.

If you do so, and also want to save some money, consider the Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass. It is your perfect companion if you want to do it all, and save some dollars at the same time.

Some of the Niagara Falls attractions included are the famous Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds. But you can also visit the Niagara Adventure Theater and the Aquarium of Niagara, plus unlimited rides on the Scenic Trolley. When visiting Niagara Falls USA I would totally recommend the Discovery Pass.

The Discovery Pass becomes valid each year when both famous Niagara Falls attractions Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist are back open and operating, mostly from June to October.

With the Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass you’ll have one admission to each attraction, which doesn’t need to be used the day of purchase. You can use this pass throughout your stay. Be aware however that all passes will expire at the end of the season.

5. How long do you need to spend at Niagara Falls

There are many awesome and cool things to do at Niagara Falls. To really experience the falls, I would advise to stay at least 2 nights and do minimum one or two of these activities. Step on board the famous Maid of the Mist and get soaked by the falls, or experience the Cave of the Winds and nearly touch the falls.

6. Maid of the Mist

niagara falls american side

When visiting the Niagara Falls, this thing to do is probably the first to come to mind. These are the boats that are on every photo, cruising passengers right into the falls. If time is limited, or for whatever reason you can only do one excursion while visiting Niagara Falls, it has to be this one!

Like they say on their website, ‘It’s the only way to experience one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders right here in the USA’.

The Maid of the Mist tours go every 15 minutes, and you’ll be on the boat for about 20 minutes. Before entering the Maid of the Mist you’ll be provided with a poncho. And believe me, you absolutely need it!

Even though you’re provided with a poncho, you’re most likely to get wet or even soaked! If you want to take photos or video, make sure to take a waterproof camera (GoPro is a great recommendation) with you, as it will get wet.

niagara falls ny attractions 1

I was lucky enough to be the first in line for the next boat. So I could make my way to the very front of the boat and experienced the Maid of the Mist boat ride the best possible way.

When doing the Maid of the Mist, you’ll also have access to the Observation Tower, another Niagara Falls NY attraction. I had a lovely sunny day when doing the Maid of the Mist, so after getting soaked I went up to the Observation Deck to enjoy the views and let the sun dry my clothes a bit.

7. Cave of the Winds

niagara falls ny attractions 2

Get even closer to the falls than you ever imagined being possible. Your adventure starts before going down to the falls, showing a short movie. Learn how Nikola Tesla harnessed the power of the Falls to create alternating current. Experience what Niagara Falls USA looked like before it was a park and witness why people from all over the world have been drawn to the edge of the Falls.

After the short movie you’re provided with a plastic bag, to keep your shoes dry, and fancy souvenir sandals to wear during the Cave of the Winds experience. Be prepared for another unique experience!

The elevators will take you down nearly 55 meters into the Niagara Gorge. From here you’re free to go. There is a series of wooden walkways that eventually will bring you to the unbelievable Hurricane Deck, the most thrilling Niagara Falls USA attraction. Here you’re just a few feet away from the crashing Bridal Veil Falls and surrounded by tropical storm like conditions. An experience like no other!

The Cave of the Winds is a timed ticketed attraction. Make sure to get tickets before you arrive if you don’t want to miss out. They’re open all year round, please be aware that some parts are closed during the Winter season.

Like I said, they provide you with sandals to wear during the experience. They are yours to take home as a souvenir if you want to. If you don’t want to take them home, please recycle them at the recycle points in the park.

8. Niagara Jet Adventures

This one is for all dare devils! You can experience the Niagara River during all four seasons with their climate controlled and covered boats. They are located a short, 30 minute drive from the Niagara Falls on the US side. The boats are waiting to take you onto the Niagara River. Most seats are covered, however if you want to get soaked (again) they do have some wet deck seats as well. But remember, if you sit on the wet deck, you will be soaked and need a change of clothing!

The Niagara Jet Adventures tours take about 45-60 minutes, so you absolutely get your money’s worth.

9. Fireworks and Illuminations of the Falls

niagara falls usa 9

Throughout the year, every night, the Niagara Falls are illuminated. Hundreds of LED lights are housed in three locations across the Niagara Gorge, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Every evening these lights work to create a breathtaking view, absolutely not to be missed. These illuminations start every evening at dusk. The views of the Falls during these illuminations are magical, and best viewed from Prospect Point, Niagara Falls State Park.

If you’re lucky enough you might even witness the remarkable Niagara Falls US State Park fireworks show, which can also be experienced throughout the year. Check the Niagara Falls State Park website for the fireworks schedule. Fireworks performances are weather permitting.

10. Niagara Falls State Park

niagara falls american side 1

The Niagara Falls State park is the oldest state park in America, and a must visit when visiting the Niagara Falls on the US side. This park is open 365 days a year. You’re surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery but can also find most of the Niagara Falls USA attractions mentioned in this article right here in this state park. There are miles of hiking trails and some nice dining options for the whole family.

Visiting the Niagara Falls State Park is an adventure-packed experience, spend your day here to truly experience the amazing falls.

11. Helicopter ride over Niagara Falls

helicopter tour niagara falls

A bit unfair to name the ultimate tourist attraction in this Niagara Falls USA travel guide, because the helicopter rides over Niagara Falls leave from Canada. Crossing the border is easy and so did I book my helicopter tour over the Niagara Falls . Click on the link to read all about it!

12. Crossing the border into Canada at Niagara Falls USA

I visited the Niagara Falls as part of my trip through the eastern parts of Canada and the USA. I traveled from Toronto to the falls first and then crossed into Niagara Falls American side.

Unfortunately I totally underestimated this. It took me nearly two hours to cross the border from Canada into the USA. They took my passport which I had to get back at the immigration office, where many people were waiting for their passport too.

So, if you’re travelling from Canada and staying on the American side of the Niagara Falls, be aware you have to cross the border and that it can take time. Once you have you passport back, and crossed the border, crossing the bridge during the rest of your stay is easy!

13. Always bring your passport

Also good to know, whenever you’re crossing the bridge/border, always make sure you have your passport with you. I crossed several times, because I also wanted to experience the Canadian side of the falls. There are immigration officers on both sides checking your passport. Crossing the bridge (and border) by foot requires a small fee every time you do so.

14. Best time to visit Niagara Falls

Summer is the best time to visit the Niagara Falls, but of course also the busiest time of the year. June to August is peak season, but because of the warmer temperatures the best time to get soaked in the thrilling Niagara Falls attractions like Cave of the Winds, Niagara Jet Adventures, Maid of the Mist. In winter if you are really lucky the Niagara Falls can be completely frozen.

15. Best place to stay American side of Niagara Falls

The Giacomo Hotel is located in one of the most iconic buildings at the American side of the Falls, and it happens to be a lovely hotel too. Experience luxury in the heart of Niagara Falls US side. The Giacomo Hotel was my base while staying at the falls. At walking distance from all major Niagara Falls NY attractions, great service, basic but good breakfast and complimentary valet parking for your car, I couldn’t have asked for more.

The Giacomo boutique hotel is housed in the United Office Building which was built in 1929, completely in art deco architecture. In 2010 it was renamed the Giacomo and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has become the premiere luxury boutique hotel in Niagara Falls USA.

Because of its perfect location, the rooftop of the Giacomo is also the perfect place to watch the fireworks and the illuminations of the falls at night.

16. Best restaurant Niagara Falls American side

Located in the state park is the Top of the Falls restaurant, the only restaurant overlooking the Niagara Falls. This restaurant offers visitors to the Niagara Falls State Park a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Their menu offers a modern American cuisine and classic dishes. And of course every dish comes with these spectacular waterfall views.

Niagara Falls USA blog

The Niagara Falls are one of the most famous waterfalls in the world, and I think they should be on everyone’s bucket list. They are well worth the visit, and very easily accessible from both Canada and United States. I hope this Niagara Falls USA travel guide helps you for your next visit to the falls.

Looking for that perfect place to stay? Make sure to check out the rates of the Giacomo Hotel .

What to know as Pope Francis embarks on longest trip of papacy

Francis, 87, began on Monday a 12-day, four-country, two-continent odyssey.

ABCNews logo

Pope Francis on Monday embarked on his 45th and most ambitious trip of his papacy, both in terms of distance and duration.

It's a 12-day, four-country, two-continent odyssey; with stops in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore.

This is not his first journey to the region: Early in his pontificate, he made four long-distance trips to South Korea, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Japan. In more recent years he has also visited Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and, last year, Mongolia.

The historic voyage comes amid recent concerns regarding his health. The Pope suffers from mobility issues and has been repeatedly hospitalized with respiratory illnesses.

As he often does, on Monday he boarded the Papal plane in a wheelchair, using a lift. He later used a cane to walk down the aisle to greet reporters, but appeared to be in good spirits. Francis turns 88 in just three months; this marks the first time he's left Italy in almost a year.

In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, the Pope's message will focus on interreligious dialogue and cultural plurality, according to the Vatican. Francis will deliver remarks at Jakarta's famed Istiqlal Mosque, alongside Indonesia's Grand Imam.

Later the Pope will visit the "Tunnel of Fraternity" linking the mosque to a nearby Catholic church. The underground lane was recently built as a symbol of religious harmony.

On the eve of this departure, Pope Francis appealed for "concrete commitment" to tackle climate change. Francis will also travel to more remote parts of the country to meet with missionaries. According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, some of the trip's other themes include social and technological development, as we well as the environment and the need to combat climate change.

In Papua New Guinea, one of the world's poorest countries, Pope Francis will stop in Port Moresby, one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

The Pope will then head to Timor-Leste, Asia's newest country, where he'll be confronted with the aftermath of another clergy sex abuse scandal. The Pope's first visit to the country comes just two years after the Vatican sanctioned independence hero Bishop Carlos Ximenes for having sexually abused young boys.

Many in the deeply Catholic country have brushed aside the allegations, choosing instead to continue celebrating the Nobel Peace Prize winner as a figure who saved lives during the country's bloody struggle for Independence. It's unclear if Francis will address the issue or meet with some of the victims, as he has in the past in other countries.

And in Singapore, the Pope will again focus on how different religions can live in harmony.

"Pope Francis will especially meet young people engaged in interreligious dialogue, entrusting them with the future of this path, so that they may become protagonists of a more fraternal and peaceful world," Cardinal Piero Parolin told Vatican Media,

His trip to Singapore is also widely seen as an attempt to improve ties with China, a constant diplomatic push by the Vatican over recent years, in the hope of improving circumstances for Catholics in China. The Pope has previously said it is his dream to visit the country. Three-quarters of the city state's population of Singapore are ethnically Chinese, and Mandarin is one of four official languages.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

90 day fiancé: "heartbreaker" how jasmine's rubbing matt branis romance in gino's face, 90 day fiancé: who is michael ilesanmi's new family (angela deem is afraid of these people).

Jasmine Pineda from 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? is thrilled with her exciting new chapter in the United States since parting ways with Gino Palazzolo . Jasmine got into a relationship with Gino about four years ago. She fell in love with him and invited him to visit Panama. Unfortunately, things didn't go as smoothly as she had hoped. Gino came to Panama but forgot to bring romantic gifts for Jasmine . He also broke her trust by sending her intimate photos to his ex, leading to a dramatic fight at the end of the season.

Jasmine had trouble believing in Gino after their first year together. She began to disrespect and belittle him during arguments. Jasmine once falsely claimed that she had been intimate with her ex-lover, Dane, just to upset Gino. Despite this, in 90 Day Fiancé season 10, Jasmine came to the United States on a K-1 visa and tied the knot with Gino. However, the marriage didn't fix her relationship issues, which became worse in the following months. In 2024, rumors of Jasmine and Gino breaking up began circulating, and fans speculated that their marriage was truly over .

Jasmine Celebrates Romantic Birthday With Someone Who's Behind The Camera

Jasmine possibly had a low-key 38th birthday celebration with matt in private.

Jasmine loves celebrating her birthday with a blast. However, in 2024, she opted for a more private celebration at a tennis court.

In August 2024, Jasmine shared photos of herself sitting next to a balloon that read, "happy birthday," wearing a red dress and holding a rose bouquet. Jasmine looked stunning and appeared cheerful in her pictures. She didn't reveal much but made it obvious that she was celebrating a romantic birthday with someone behind the camera , possibly her boyfriend, Matt Branis, who she met in a gym in Michigan.

Jasmine's Embracing New Fashionable Makeovers

Jasmine claims her light "can't be dimmed".

Jasmine has been focusing on fashion following her split from Gino. A few weeks ago, Jasmine shared a photo of herself from Detroit Mexican Town. She wore a black and white striped outfit with a black coat, which looked great. The mother of two also had a white flower in her black hair, which complemented her monochromatic look.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Jasmine also shared a photo of a quote in her post. She wrote, "due to divine reasons this light cannot be dimmed," indicating that she won't let a breakup bring her down.

Jasmine's In The Best Shape Of Her Life After Gino Split

Jasmine's holding up well despite her failed marriage.

After a breakup, most people experience suffering, which can result in physical and mental health challenges. However, Jasmine's demeanor indicates she's handling her split from Gino well.

A month ago, Jasmine posted a video showcasing her new gym outfit. She appeared incredible and seemed in the best shape of her life. Jasmine's upper body and midsection seemed more sculpted than in the past. She also looked stunning with minimal makeup and her natural hair. More than 1.5k fans showed their approval of Jasmine's fitness post, commenting on her beautiful appearance.

Jasmine Is Traveling Around The U.S.

Jasmine lets her adventurous side shine during a las vegas trip.

Jasmine enjoys traveling a lot and appears to be living an adventurous life since ending things with her American husband.

In July 2024, Jasmine shared a photo album from Las Vegas, enjoying the warm weather. She visited several popular locations and wore her most stunning summer outfits. Jasmine titled her post, "what happens in Vegas…stays in Vegas." She posted a winking emoji, showcasing her adventurous spirit . The 90 Day Fiancé cast member's Vegas trip photos received nearly 6k likes, with many fans and co-stars wishing her the best of luck.

Jasmine Launched Her New Business In July 2024

Jasmine doesn't need gino's handout.

In July 2024, Jasmine took a big step forward by launching her new business, Jazzy Fitness. She introduced a vegan protein, leveraging her popularity to catapult her product to new heights. Jasmine titled her post, "I'm very happy to announce that my vegan protein made it to Amazon!" She expressed feeling "endlessly blessed" and expressed gratitude for achieving such a significant milestone. The 90 Day Fiancé alum's business and product launch received several positive comments as well as love and support from fellow businesswomen such as Darcey Silva and Thaís Ramone.

Jasmine's Looking More Youthful Than Ever

Jasmine is investing time in professional skin care.

Jasmine has used her breakup with Gino as inspiration to improve herself. She has been dedicating a lot of time and effort to skin care to regain her youthful appearance from before she entered a toxic relationship with her now-estranged husband.

In June 2024, Jasmine shared a video of her latest cosmetic procedure, revealing the secret behind her glowing skin. She captioned the post, "can't wait to show the results of my new skin care routine," to promote the spa she visited. Jasmine has truly blossomed since moving on from Gino and embracing a dedicated skincare regimen.

Jasmine Flaunts Boyfriend's New Gift

Jasmine is still keeping her new romance under wraps.

Jasmine appears to have moved on from Gino soon after their breakup. She has posted several social media posts hinting at a new partner. A few days ago, Jasmine shared a close-up photo of her hands with a heart emoji, displaying her new shiny ring, which seemed bigger than anything Gino had given her .

Jasmine Pineda from 90 Day Fiancé keeps dropping hints about her new relationship with Matt Branis, implying that he's a step up from Gino Palazzolo.

Shortly after, Jasmine posted an adorable picture of herself holding a plush alligator, likely a gift from a special someone. The 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? alum looked stunning in her blue outfit and new hairstyle, feeling carefree after the end of her problematic relationship.

It'll be interesting to see if Jasmine continues to share her journey with 90 Day Fiancé viewers so they can find out what happened between her and Gino. There are rumors suggesting that Jasmine and Gino might be featured in 90 Day: The Last Resort season 2. If this is true, it would explain why Jasmine hasn't introduced her new boyfriend on social media yet . Perhaps the 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? cast member is waiting for the right moment to reveal the secret she has been keeping for months.

90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days season 7 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on TLC.

welcome to on the trip side

Welcome to On the Trip Side!

Well, darling friends… this is a strange day! I’ve been working on this rebrand for over 3 months and today it the first day I’m writing my first blog post off of blogger for over 18 years. I’m fully transitioned over to wordpress and, well, it’s weird! It’s going to take some time to adjust but I love a good challenge. So, with out much ado, Welcome to On the Trip Side !

Table of Contents

Thank you for joining me on this new adventure!

This rebrand has been a long time coming. Something I’ve been thinking about for well over a year now. When I started P2, Peplums and Pie, I was blogging about my daily wardrobe and all of the food I was making during my lunch breaks when I worked at Allrecipes. When I left, that came to a halt! However, my daily OOTDs continued and I started adding in my travels instead.

Welcome to On the Trip Side, Paris

I learned that no one was coming to visit my blog for recipes anymore. When I realized I only posted two recipes last year (my favorite pecan pie and peanut toffee cookies ) my mind couldn’t stop thinking about a rebrand.

On the Trip Side has my name in it! It truly feels like my own little space on the interwebs. I know this blog will be filled with my lifestyle, fashion and adventures. I’m really excited for you guys to join me!

I’ve broken this site out by Category so it’ll be easy to navigate. As time goes on, I’m hoping to customize it to grow with me. Here are my 5 key channels I plan to stick with.

My next post will be an OOTD but I plan to share my hopes and dream for this space with you soon. I hope you’re as excited as I am!
