Rainforest Bus Tours at Olympic National Park

With its incredibly diverse climates, from alpine lakes to glaciers to pacific coastline, there is a lot to pull people to Olympic. But maybe the most distinct of all its ecosystems is its rainforests. All three of the temperate rainforests located within the contiguous United States are in Olympic, and present a wonderful opportunity to see one of the rarer climates within this great country.

A great way to experience this landscape in full is through one of the Rainforest Bus Tours offered out of Lake Quinault Lodge. This escapade is a 4-hour journey through the lush Quinault Rainforest, while you sit in the comfort of a 14-passenger tour coach. Guides on each tour explain the history of the location, including the geology of its formation, the interesting plants and wildlife that exist in the rainforest, and, of course, there are plenty of photo-opportunities.

Sightings of elk, black bears, and birds such as bald eagles are common on these tours.

Olympic National Park from Seattle Tour Reviews

1. best small group tour: best of olympic national park from seattle: all-inclusive small-group day tour.

  • Duration: 12 hours
  • Departure:  Pick-up and Drop-off at your Downtown Seattle Hotel or Cruise Terminal
  • Departure Time:  7:30 AM
  • Includes: N aturalist Escape Artist guide, tr avel in adventure-outfitted luxury Mercedes van or Crossover, l ocally sourced and/or organic lunch, s easonal snacks and refreshments throughout the tour, a ll entry fees, s nowshoes in winter,  naturalist commentary

First up, we have the Seattle: Olympic National park Small-Group Tour . This 12-hour excursion is incredibly comprehensive, making it one of the top choices for many. If you’re into seeing natural beauty and all kinds of wildlife, then you’re in for a real treat.

From the very start, you can tell that this is a very organized group of people. You’ll choose to either be picked up from your hotel in downtown Seattle, or one of the cruise terminals. The cruise terminals are maybe 5 minutes from downtown anyway, so it’s super easy to get there by bus, bike, Uber, etc.

Start off early in the morning by taking a ferry onto Bainbridge Island and onto the peninsula. Hop onto either a luxury Mercedes van or Crossover – both are spacious and more than adequate for a 2-hour ride.

The ride there is also quite pretty – most of it is freeway, but you can expect both sides to be lined with Evergreens (must be where the state gets its nickname, huh?). Once you arrive to Hurricane Ridge, you’ll see even more greenery – as far as the eye can see!

This part of the state features various remote beaches with beautiful mountains in the distance. Despite raining for the better part of the year, these are almost always visible and sometimes even have snow! You’ll get to see the San Juan Islands, which are famous for whale sightings!

Open meadows are perfect for catching sight of black-tailed deer, Olympic marmots, and even black bears, occasionally. Check out Lake Crescent, where you’ll learn of all kinds of fascinating history lessons, interesting mysteries, and more. You’ll see tons of different trees, various trails, and much more.

Throughout the tour, snacks and refreshments will be offered so you’re always fueled up and hydrated. However, you’ll have time to also eat an included lunch which is locally-sourced or organic.

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. best value tour: olympic national park tour from seattle.

  • Duration: 13 hours
  • Departure: Varies
  • Departure Time:  7:00 AM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, landing and facility fees, ferry rides

This tour is just slightly longer than the previous one, and has many similarities to the first. However, if you’re looking for a more customized experience, take a look at this one. The Olympic National Park Tour from Seattle is a beautiful, versatile adventure that will keep you entertained the entire time.

There’s free pickup available at essentially any downtown Seattle hotel, so make sure you’re ready in the lobby at 7 am. The climate-controlled vehicles are very comfortable, no matter the year.

Just remember to bring waterproof shoes that are ideal for hiking and potentially uneven, slippery surfaces. Even in May and June, it can be snowy and wet.

The first stop is Hurricane Ridge, where you’ll get incredible views of the Olympics from a mile-high vantage point. Here, you’ll get to go on an exhilarating hike, eat some delicious locally-sourced food, check out the gift shop for fun souvenirs, and even go snowshoeing, depending on the weather conditions!

Next, you’ll see Lake Crescent, which is an absolutely gorgeous lake created by glaciers. It’s known for being incredibly clear and pure, and with the countless trees around, the air is very clean too.  You can choose to either hike here, or use a kayak or other boats if you prefer to see the lake from a different perspective!

Depending on the tide, you may get to see Salt Creek, which features rich tide pools with a fantastic beach. You can also choose to stop at Dungeness Recreation Area, with another nice beach and wildlife sanctuary.

There are a couple of other stops where you’ll get to see all kinds of waterfalls, old growth forests/the rainforest, hiking, and even hot springs (depending on the weather).

3. Best Private Tour: Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park from Seattle

  • Duration: 10 am
  • Departure: SeaTac Airport or Ferry Piers 91 and 66
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  Ferry Fees, National Park fees, driver/guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, also Seattle airport and the piers, snacks

Next up, we have a slightly shorter tour available that is very convenient and packed full of adventure. The Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park from Seattle tour sums it up well in just the title. If you just want to see Hurricane Ridge in the most convenient way possible, this is it!

As you can imagine, it’s slightly shorter due to the fact that your only stop is going to be at Hurricane Ridge. This mountainous area is known for incredible views, hiking, snow sports, and of course the flora and fauna.

The Olympic National park is amazing, and Hurricane Ridge is probably the most popular part of it due to all of these factors and its ease of access.

In the morning, you’ll meet your guide and the rest of your group at either SeaTac airport, or ferry pier 91 or 66. SeaTac is maybe a 20-minute drive from downtown (to the south) while the ferry piers are closer to downtown, so take that into account while deciding.

Rather than a bus or van like some of the other tours, with this tour you’ll be transported in a luxury SUV. The vehicle is also very convenient and comfortable, with a personalized experience thanks to the small group sizes.

Should you have any questions, your guide/driver is more than happy to assist. Once you arrive, your guide will tell you all about the area, and you’ll begin your hike.

You’ll even be able to see mountains and Canada! Take a look at the Visitor’s Center, which is very educational and entertaining.

4. Best Luxury Tour: Olympic National Park – Private Luxury Day Tour with Lunch

  • Includes:  All physical abilities welcome, gourmet lunch, complimentary coffee, water, and snacks, guided nature walks, hotel pick-up and drop-off in our luxury Mercedes van,, professional local guide, foffee and/or tea

If you want to see one of the most captivating UNESCO sites in North America, along with historical towns, and more, you have to check out this one.

The Olympic National Park – Private Luxury Day Tour with Lunch really is one of the most plush ways to see these attractions. It doesn’t get this more convenient and personalized than this!

This tour is designed to be customized (within reason) by you and the rest of your group, depending on your interests and preferences.

This makes it an even more incredible experience, as you’re really seeing the things you want to most. With excellent communication all-around, you can expect to learn about and see a lot of wonderful sites!

In the morning, you’ll be picked up at your downtown hotel and hop on a luxury Mercedes. You’ll then take a ferry (the vehicle can go on the ferry, for those confused on the logistics here), which is actually pretty fun, in itself!

The views are amazing, and you can either stay inside or head to the top deck for incomparable views of the sound and mountains. You’ll stop at the historical town of Port Gamble first. This national historic site played a huge role in the growth of Puget Sound, and is also known to be incredibly haunted!

After having a look around, you and your group will then head straight to the beautiful Hurricane Ridge. Here, you’ll see the impressive Madison Falls and the crystal-clear Crescent Lake. Be sure to bring waterproof hiking shoes/boots, along with a jacket (if you have questions, just ask your guide beforehand on outfit recommendations).

After your hike, you’re sure to have burned off some calories so head to Elwha River for a delicious, gourmet picnic lunch. You’re sure to enjoy the view, sound of the water ebbing and flowing, and your food!

5. Best Full Day Tour: Rainforest Adventure Olympic National Park Private Tour

  • Duration: 10 hours
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  All taxes, fees and handling charges, free water bottle, snacks

Are you looking to escape the noisy, busy city? Seattle has exploded in population since the early 90’s, and more so in the last decade, so it makes sense to want to get some fresh air and quiet time in nature. Take off for the day just a couple of hours away, with the Rainforest Adventure Olympic National Park Private Tour .

Lasting 10 hours, you will be able to be picked up early at 8 am at your downtown hotel so there’s no worrying about meetup points.

With a maximum of just 5 people in the group, you can rest assured you’ll receive incredible attention from your guide. Ask them any question and see more things, which is harder to accomplish with bigger groups.

Enjoy the scenery on the way to your first stop, which is really such an enjoyable experience. This part of the state is absolutely beautiful, and just filled with endless greenery and natural wonders. Your guide will fill you in on any notable facts, anecdotes, and historical stories related to the area as well.

You’ll first arrive to the Quinault Rainforest, where you’ll hike your first trail and stop along the way for everyone to stretch, catch their breath, etcetera. You can expect to see plenty of moss, ferns, trees (including the world’s biggest Spruce tree!), and even some wildlife if you’re lucky!

After working up an appetite, you’ll enjoy a delicious, locally-prepared lunch. After refueling, head onto the second trail, which is known for its very old farm, wooded stream, and even get to see the birthplace of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain!

Then, see the Olympic National Forest, where you’ll further explore the outdoors. The natural temperate rainforest really is something special, and feels like you’ve landed on another planet at times! You’ll surely see flora and fauna that you’ve never seen before and you get to do so without the pressure or noise of crowds.

Seattle Travel Guide

Seattle may be best known for the Space Needle, Puget Sound, and rain, but there are plenty of things to do in and around the city as well as some very unique places to stay and to eat. If you are planning a trip to Seattle, whether for business or pleasure, be sure to take in a bit of the city’s exclusive culture and history.

Airports & Entry

If you are flying into Seattle you will most likely land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport , or SeaTac for short. While King County International Airport isn’t too far away, it sees much less traffic.

If you are flying in from out of the country, you’ll need to have a valid passport as well as approval from ESTA. ESTA is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization . This authorization is for stays of less than 90 days and works in place of a visa.

Many visitors to Seattle drive to the US across the Canadian border. If you are a Canadian citizen, you will need to have an enhanced driver’s license or ID. If you are from a non-North American country and wish to fly into the Vancouver International Airport, you will need your passport to land there and then your passport and ESTA authorization to drive across the US-Canadian border.

Planning Tips

Most people are guilty of planning their Seattle trip based on what they know, or think they know, about the city. Unfortunately, this can lead to visitors missing out on a lot that the city has to offer. Many things are also important to plan ahead of your trip. Let’s look at our top 5 Seattle vacation planning tips.

Tip #1: Make Dinner Reservations in Advance

While you may not dine at one of Seattle’s busiest restaurants every day of your stay, you will want to at least experience a great seafood restaurant. Most of the best seafood restaurants in Seattle take reservations months in advance, and even further around holidays and peak travel times.

If there are restaurants you know you will want to experience, the best bet is to call well ahead of your trip. If they are taking reservations, you can make them then. If they aren’t or if they don’t take them, you can always ask which day would be the best to visit to avoid crowds.

Tip #2: Book Tours Well in Advance

Whether you plan on taking tours of the city itself or you’d like to take a day trip out of the city to explore the natural environment of the Pacific Northwest, many tours fill up well in advance. Usually, this is because they are small group tours that allow a limited number of travelers on each tour.

Once you know when and for how long you will be in Seattle, find those day tours and book them. That way, you know you have your seat on the tour guaranteed.

Tip #3: Bring an Umbrella

Seattle gets more rain than many other areas of the country, but they may not get as much rain as you assume. For example, August only has 6 rainy days on average. This means that you may not even need the umbrella you bring but it’s better to have one and not need it. A collapsible travel umbrella that can easily be carried with you is ideal.

Tip #4: Don’t Miss Out on Seeing the Great Outdoors

It’s not just the city of Seattle that is worth your time exploring. Mount Rainier, the Cascade Mountains, Mount St. Helens, and even Puget Sound are all great places to experience while you’re already nearby. Day tours offer a fun and affordable way to experience them with transportation usually provided, and oftentimes meals, snacks, and beverages provided as well.

Tip #5: Bring Your Most Comfortable Walking Shoes

In the city, you’ll often find yourself walking to your destination and avoiding the traffic on both side streets and the main freeways. This means your most comfortable walking shoes are going to be your best friend. If you do plan on heading out of the city for a day tour from Seattle, those walking shoes are going to make the walking and hiking much easier.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Seattle is home to many types of cuisine, and it seems to do them all very well. With Asian cuisine and seafood available everywhere you turn, you may also want to check out Paseo for some delicious, authentic Cuban fare.

Gastropubs are now moving into the area and one of the best is Smith. It has a homey feel with décor you’d probably see in a cabin in the woods, but you can’t resist the craft brews and great food. Dick’s Drive-In Restaurant is the oldest fast food restaurant in the city and still serves up burgers cooked with fresh beef and their hand-cut fries are as good as they come.

Nightlife & Entertainment

The Pink Door is a late-night dinner experience like no other. In fact, you’ll enjoy a large menu of delicious food and great drinks while performers put on an acrobatic show right above your head. The Zig Zag Café is another staple of Seattle culture that you won’t want to miss.

If you’re into the newest craze in craft cocktails and enjoy those “small bites” designed to complement them perfectly, the Damn the Weather bar is perfect. However, the Knee High Stocking Company, whose name is derived from the doorbell on the front, is an original speakeasy from the latest prohibition that Seattle endured and still has that same speakeasy vibe.

Getting Around

Traveling by car, whether a rental or taxi, is usually a nightmare in Seattle, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours. If long-distance travel to your destination is needed, the bus system is very efficient. In downtown, the light train is quick and has many convenient stops. It is also one of the best ways to get too and from SeaTac airport.

However, the most convenient way you have of traveling within the city is walking. You will usually get to your destination much more quickly and you’ll see some great, and sometimes unexpected, things on the way there.

Accommodations

If you’re looking to leave the chain hotels behind and experience accommodations that are truly and uniquely Seattle, you have several options. The Ace Hotel Seattle is a perfect blend of cheap and chic. With only 28 rooms, you’ll have first class customer service with a hipster flair.

The Hotel Deca is conveniently located near the University of Washington campus which makes it the perfect place for families in town visiting students or even students touring the campus. It has an art deco flare that makes it a fun way to spend your stay in Seattle.

Other unique hotels in the area include Hotel Max, which is infamous for strangely erotic artwork and a vibe to match . The Hotel 1000 is truly on the cutting edge when it comes to technologically advanced amenities.

The summer months with the warmest weather and the least amount of rainy days, on average, are the busiest and most expensive months in which to travel to Seattle. However, there are many activities that only happen then. If you are looking for the perfect blend of warm weather and fewer crowds, September is ideal.

December and January are typically the coldest months with average highs in the mid-40s Fahrenheit and mostly rainy days. There are many activities in the city around the time of the winter holidays, especially New Years’ Eve, however.

Attractions

Of course, when visiting Seattle, you don’t want to miss out on the Space Needle or the Seattle Great Wheel, a tall Ferris wheel that offers stunning views of the city especially at sunset. There are many other places to see, however.

Seattle is home to many museums. A few of the most popular ones are the Museum of Pop Culture as well as the Klondike Gold Rush National History Park and the Museum of Flight.

If you are looking for unique attractions, you’ll want to see the 18-foot high troll under a Fremont area bridge and even take a tour of Seattle’s underground.

HOW TO VISIT THE HOH RAIN FOREST FROM SEATTLE (AND WHY WE’RE MAKING IT EASY)

people walking in a mossy forest underneath a large moss-covered branch in the Hoh Rainforest on a group tour

Walking beneath a moss-covered branch in the Hoh Rain Forest – Olympic National Park

In my years as a professional tour guide, I’ve noticed one recurring question which I had no good answer for:

“How can I visit Olympic National Park without a car?”

My usual answer included an explanation of how even though the park is relatively close to Seattle, public transit on the Olympic Peninsula is nearly non-existent.  I would also tell people about the single-day tours available, but adding the huge caveat that the time constraints of a single day render it impossible to see more than a tiny fraction of the park (the Northeast corner closest to Seattle). This means you would miss out on the park’s most unique features (the Hoh Rain Forest and Pacific beaches) which make it the crown jewel of the entire National Park system (in my humble opinion).  Therefore, I always suggested renting a car and spending at least a couple of days exploring the park.

Renting a car, of course, wasn’t an option for everyone (especially international travelers), and the rental car shortage of the last couple of years made it difficult and cost-prohibitive for just about everyone.  Believe it or not, I would sometimes feel so bad about the lack of options that I would be tempted to offer to drive and show them around the park myself.  Clearly, there was a need that wasn’t being met, which is why we’ve decided to introduce the first (and only) 2-day Olympic National Park tour from Seattle .

Hole in the Wall – Rialto Beach – Olympic National Park

If you’ve landed on this article, it’s probably safe to assume you already know a bit about Olympic National Park and what makes it so special, but just in case, let’s highlight some of the most spectacular areas of this massive (nearly a million acres) park, beginning with those on the Western side that a single-day tour just can’t reach:

Visiting The Hoh Rain Forest

a man standing next to a large root system of a tree in the Hoh Rainforest on an Olympic National Park Tour with Tours Northwest

The exposed root system of a felled Sitka spruce on the Spruce Nature Trail – Hoh Rain Forest – Olympic National Park

If there’s one thing people associate with Olympic National Park, it’s the Hoh Rain Forest, and with good reason. It’s the largest temperate rainforest in the contiguous U.S., and also the wettest, with an average annual rainfall of 140 inches . This climate creates the perfect conditions for towering trees draped in vibrant green mosses and lichens (over 130 species of these Epiphytes – “plants that grow upon plants”), a magical environment that words truly can’t capture.  The Hoh Rain Forest has been awarded the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve, and its ecosystem is now the most carefully preserved rain forest in the northern hemisphere. Due to this exceptional climate, the best time to visit the Hoh Rain Forest is between Spring and Fall.

One reason a visit here can’t be adequately described, only experienced, is because of the way this forest envelops all of your senses.  As visually striking as the sea of infinite green might be, the experience is augmented by the smell of earthy Sitka spruce, sweet western red cedar, and subtle citrus from the western hemlock.  Most noteworthy, however, is the silence created by all of that moss, fog, and isolation which makes it one of the quietest places on earth .  The contrast with all the noise of our modern world is striking, and this unique experience would benefit just about anyone, which is why I’m so eager to bring people into this amazing space.

Pacific Beaches

Kalaloch Beach – Olympic National Park

Forget whatever visions of a sandy, tropical paradise the word “beach” might evoke for you and imagine something far more rugged, dramatic, and thrilling.  The first thing you’ll notice is the forest of enormous driftwood logs worn by the surf into striking sculptures.  This is, in part, due to the fact that you may need to scale some of this driftwood to reach the beach.  Once you see (and hear) the crashing waves of the Pacific ocean, you’ll be able to sense the extreme forces that sculpted this driftwood, along with the sea stacks and other rock formations you’ll also get a chance to explore.

Sea stacks at Rialto Beach – Olympic National Park

On tours that allow us to reach the Pacific coast at low tide, you’ll get a chance to discover the microcosm of marine life in the tide pools where you can find sea stars, anemones, and urchins among the many life forms calling these rock formations home.  You’re also likely to see bald eagles soaring above as you experience a beach that’s probably unlike any you’ve seen before.

Hurricane Ridge

Hurricane Ridge – Olympic National Park

The highest elevation we can drive to in the park ( 5,242 feet), the winds here (which can reach up to 75 miles per hour) are the reason for the name Hurricane Ridge .  You’ll understand why the earliest explorers to this region dubbed this mountain range the Olympics, the sight of them evoking visions of a home for Greek gods, as you learn about the tectonic forces just off the coast, wind, and 30-35 feet of annual snowfall that shape this rugged terrain.

Hurricane Ridge is also where you’re most likely to see (or hear the unique whistle) of the Olympic Marmot, a species found nowhere other than the Olympic Peninsula.

Roosevelt Elk in the Hoh River – Olympic National Park

You’re also likely to see some of the 5,000 Roosevelt Elk ( the largest of the four surviving subspecies of elk) who make their homes in this park, the largest known population on earth.  Protecting the elk was the primary motivation for creating this national park, whose original proposed name was “Elk National Park.”

a group of people standing in front of Marymere Falls in the Olympic National Park

Marymere Falls – Olympic National Park

Some other tour highlights include mesmerizing waterfalls (Marymere and/or Madison Falls), pristine Lake Crescent and the fascinating Elwha River, site of the largest dam removal project in US history which is also one of the greatest success stories of ecological restoration.

These three distinct ecosystems lead many to describe this UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve as three parks in one, with its lush temperate rain forests, over 70 miles of wild coastline, and towering mountain peaks.  Even our 2-day tour can only scratch the surface of this park’s spectacular 922,650 acres, but hopefully, you can recognize what a shame it would be to only visit one of these three distinct biospheres on a single-day tour. This wraps up our guide on How to Visit the Hoh Rainforest from Seattle (and why we’re making it easy) and the unique locations you should visit. Hope you’re able to join us for one of these incredible adventures!

Lake Quinault’s 33-mile rainforest tour transports you to a fantastical world

Lake quinault offers a magical outdoors experience.

Moss and Lichon covered tree in the Quinault Rainforest

The Olympic Peninsula offers all of the outdoor attractions you could want: mist-enveloped mountains, pristine lakes, rugged coastal cliffs, and one of the best national parks in Washington state .

What to expect on the Lake Quinault Rainforest Tour

The cultural and ecological history of the lake quinault rainforest, pair your tour with a night in the historic lake quinault lodge.

But most unique is the 1.3 million acres of enchanting old-growth rainforest, seemingly lifted straight from the pages of a fairy tale.

Most visitors flock to the Hoh rainforest to witness the iconic moss-covered trees, but the Quinault Valley offers a less crowded, equally stunning experience.

For those seeking an intimate and informed connection with the Quinault Rainforest, the one-of-a-kind 33-mile Lake Quinault Tour weaves comfort, educational rigor, and unrivaled access into the valley’s hidden gems.

Here’s what you can expect on the Lake Quinault Tour, alongside helpful tips on how to make the most out of your time in this otherwordly region of Washington.

The Lake Quinault Tour is primarily a driving tour and lasts approximately 4 hours. Guests will enjoy a full loop around the lake alongside a few off-road visits, with a comfortable 9:30 am departure time.

The tour begins and concludes in the historic Lake Quinault Lodge , and attendees seeking a hearty breakfast can dine in the Roosevelt dining room, conveniently located on-site. Tour-goers can expect lunch, restroom breaks, and a chance to explore the Washington rainforest on foot throughout the half-day excursion.

While about 0.5 to 2 miles of total walking is involved, it’s leisurely and on relatively flat ground, making it accessible to all outdoor enthusiasts.

The comfortable and clean coach van stops frequently so guests can stretch their legs and take a closer look at the rainforest’s flora and fauna. The van’s large crystal-clear windows are great for panoramic views and glare-free photos, and the temperature-controlled cabin makes the ride cozy year-round.

While circling the magnificent 4-mile-wide lake, certified guides expertly navigate tight channels to point out interesting features of the terrain, moving at a leisurely pace so everyone can savor the views.

The tour doesn’t feel rushed, and its slower pace amplifies the quiet magic of this place.

Rest in the basin of a waterfall

As the tour departs from the Lodge, you’ll first visit the Merriman Falls, a 40-foot gem right off the road that feeds into Lake Quinault. The next stop is Bunch Creek Falls, the largest waterfall on the tour, cascading over 60 feet. You’ll have time to enjoy each of these falls up close, greeted by the cool, gentle mist at the base.

Tour guides point out the various lichen and moss species that feed from the falls, even identifying their tiny microblooms. These waterfalls provide a perfect backdrop for photos, so be sure to have your camera or phone on hand.

Behold the largest Sitka Spruce tree

Known as the valley of rainforest giants, the Quinault territory boasts 6 of 8 giant champion trees on the Olympic Peninsula. Tour-goers will have a chance to see, touch, and hear about the history of the largest Sitka spruce tree in the world. Its circumference spans over 58 feet, and it towers 191 feet tall.

The root system of the millennium-old tree extends in a wide circle, mirroring the sprawl of its majestic branches above. Visitors can stand right in the roots and crane their necks back for a surreal glimpse into the canopy of this ancient arboreal giant.

Our tour guide informed us that this particular tree has dozens of species living on it at any given time. From birds to insects, the Sitka spruce is a thriving ecosystem all on its own.

Although this is the only champion tree visible along the tour’s route, you can expect to see countless other equally impressive specimens.

Experience the mystical Maple Glade Nature Trail

After viewing the giant Sitka spruce, your tour navigates even deeper into the rainforest. At this point, the woods begin to reveal their mystical nature.

The verdant moss slowly closes in on the road, the tree canopy thickens, and bright spring maple leaves cast their glow on the forest floor. Towering old-growth trees can be seen in all of their glory, just inches from one’s seat, enveloped by ferns, vines, and lichens.

Visitors then arrive at the Maple Glade Nature Trail, an easy yet immersive half-mile loop hike through the heart of Quinault’s rainforest.

You can learn more about the rainforest by sticking with your certified guide. If you like exploring independently, this is the perfect opportunity to depart for a wondrous moment of solace.

The stunning trail meanders around a series of bogs and marshes, each a unique bio-universe in its own right. There are several small paths off the main trail that lead to even more hidden treasures, including vibrant mushrooms and peaceful birdwatching nooks.

Wildlife sightings

While not guaranteed, visitors may spot black-tailed deer, elk, and even bears throughout the Quinault Valley. Banana slugs can be found in the spring and summer months, and birds, accompanied by their unique and rich songs, are present year-round.

Make sure to bring a pair of binoculars with you – they’re handy for seeing things far away and up close, and your guide will provide you with identification cards that can help you spot and name the creatures you’ll see along the way.

The Olympic Peninsula’s history is as captivating as the sweeping views and ancient trees. This places the Lake Quinault tour as a crucial player in preserving the valley’s cultural heritage.

The Quinault tribe has inhabited the southwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula for thousands of years and the tour briefly passes through what is currently established as the Quinault reservation.

You’ll glimpse insights into the tribe’s culture and way of life, from ancient whale hunting practices to modern tribal governance.

From Spanish fur traders arriving in the region in the 1700s to the completion of the area’s first road in the early 20th century, generations of non-indigenous visitors have etched their cultural mark on the land.

The establishment of Olympic National Park in 1938 further expanded the tourism industry in the region and solidified the preservation of the unique ecosystem of Lake Quinault.

Quinalt’s guides recant the most notable and entertaining stories, such as the floating pavilion built in 1922 for prohibition-era parties aboard the lake, narrowly skirting alcohol regulations.

Plenty of ephemera remains from the rainforest’s early days, spanning half-composted cabins, rusted vehicles, and historic homesteads. These human-made structures are dotted along the tour, contrasting the lush landscape and adding a whole new layer to the rainforest’s story.

The historic Quinault Lodge is the perfect base for embarking on the Lake Quinault Tour. The lodge was built in 1926 and still stands today as one of the most iconic landmarks within Olympic National Park.

The hotel feels rustic yet distinguished, an intentional choice by architect Robert Reamer , who also designed the famed Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone National Park.

The warm wooded structure is draped in sleepy mosses, with an artistic rain gauge painted on its chimney. Guests can enjoy access to over 15 trails, and an impressive interpretive trail sits right on the property.

Select rooms offer idyllic views, cozy fireplaces, and covered porches, well-suited for enjoying the gentle morning rain over the lake. Historic images of the Quinault Lodge and the surrounding valley adorn every room, reflecting the hotel’s rich heritage.

While the lodge is a great choice for quick stops between adventuring, the property’s amenities make it a restorative option for visitors simply seeking rest in the tranquil valley.

The Roosevelt dining room offers fine Pacific Northwestern cuisine during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A robust drink list features expertly mixed spirits, local beers, and select wines. Guests can enjoy a cocktail in the main lodge, out on the lawn, or even from the comfort of their room, serviced by the bar’s friendly and attentive staff.

Sauna and pool access are available year-round, and in summer months, visitors can swim, paddleboard, or kayak in the clear, cool waters of the lake, only steps from the lodge. Outdoor games like horseshoes are strewn throughout the property, and waterfront picnic tables provide sweeping mountain and lake views.

The Lake Quinault Tour and historic Quinault Lodge create a perfect pairing for a fairy-tale escape. So take time to enjoy this magically-laden landscape – even a quick visit to this special region could infuse you with the soothing properties of the Quinault rainforest.

Moose are majestic and peaceful-looking animals that we're lucky to see in wild spaces. But are moose dangerous? Like bears, they are unpredictable creatures that may not take kindly to our presence. And if you're taking a long-distance hike or are in a remote area, you're likely to see one. So what do you do when a moose comes your way? Here are our thoughts, as well as some helpful tips to stay safe during a moose encounter.

Unforeseen moose attack in Colorado Springs On September 12, two hikers alongside their three dogs encountered a distressed cow moose on the Craigs Trail in Colorado Springs. According to the report, they spotted the moose about 1 mile into their hike in a scenic opening. Although the three dogs were leashed and the hikers did their best to move along the trail at a safe distance, the moose began to close in on them. As the moose neared, the dogs barked in response to the moose’s presence. This didn't deter the moose, and the animal then trampled a hiker. Despite their efforts to escape the moose and flee, the persistent creature pursued them relentlessly along the trail. After some time, they outran the moose and made it safely to their car. The injured individual was able to walk and the two then immediately headed to the hospital. Thankfully, their injuries were minor. The bull moose reportedly attacked because it was accompanied by a young calf. It's well understood that when a moose is threatened by a predator, such as the barking dogs, it will defend its young at all costs. This story serves as a stern reminder that it's important to be aware of our surroundings when heading into wild spaces. Colorado Parks & Wildlife has responded to the incident by posting warning signs in areas with known moose activity, including the Craigs Trail. But a moose encounter can happen anywhere, with their populations increasing by over one-third over the past decade. Here are a few tips for how to safely deal with a moose sighting if one of these creatures gets too close for comfort.

Are you planning a trip to the Grand Canyon? You'd better hold that thought. The National Park Service has just announced a series of closures for various trails and campgrounds within Grand Canyon National Park that could impact your trip. Fortunately, they aren't permanent, and they are mostly construction-related closures. In this article, we will explore the details of these closures, their expected durations, and the importance of adhering to the guidelines set forth by the National Park Service. Grand Canyon North Rim closures The Transcanyon Waterline construction-related closures will affect several popular areas within the Grand Canyon. The closures are as follows:

Silver Bridge: September 15 to December 31, 2025.

at first I was thinking that I might not enjoy my day at this Olympic National Park, probably because I didn’t really know much about it. But thanks to this journey and my friends who made my day so wonderful. Olympic National Park is so big and I remember we reached there in a morning time when there were quite a few people around. I mean, it was so wonderful to see the stunning isolated nature all by myself. The ferry ride on the way back to Seattle was a real awesome idea. Thank you so much for this wonderful tour!

the tour bus drove us to the Olympic National Park in a morning. I admit that the park is one of the most wonderful locations in the country but I departed on this tour mostly because I thought they will guide us to every single location and we will have fun. But it wasn’t the way I thought it would be but we just self-explored it mostly. They told us that they will take us to the see the hurricane ridge but suddenly they changed their plan and we missed that also. We also missed the ferry ride on the way back to the Seattle. But the park overall is really amazing. I will try to take a tour on my own. Thanks for your service.

Vijayent Tripathi

The best tour i had in many years. Great service and hospitality, tour guide is an amazing person, really helpful and friendly, yet very professional at the same time, we really loved Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, and The Olympic National Park

I would really like to thank my friend who had referred me to Golden Bus Tours, I had many tours with different agencies before, But really Golden Bus Tours is by far one of the best agencies i have dealt with, very organized and their customer service is excellent. I would also like to thank the tour guide who was really helpful guy and he was very professional and well educated. i was really happy about that package.

The best thing we loved about that tour is the tour guide. Our tour guide was really a great guy. He was very helpful and very professional yet so friendly and funny at the same time. Our bus was clean and comfortable though there was no bathroom available so we had to stop for breaks.

Kalyan Manpreet

The tour was really very well organized, we moved exactly on time, there was no delay and even during the tour we were right on schedule, it was a great effort from the tour guide who was a great guy by the way. The bus was really comfortable. and we really enjoyed that day a lot

Alica Vosper

Not only was the price great but the bus gave us a more personalized experience of seeing all the sightseeing. I enjoyed a lot with our guide. Definitely recommend this 1-Day Seattle/Renton to Olympic National Park and Lake Crescent Tour .

It was our third time in Seattle and we wanted to show our senior parents around. They made us and my parents feel like family. It was an unimaginably amazing experience for me because the tour guide made my parents feel so happy.

Sawa Tretyakov

In fact, my mother cried at the end trying to express her gratitude to our guide. I feel like this tour is worth much more than we paid and I\'m utterly grateful to have found the tour. We had an incredible experience that we will never forget.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

rainforest bus tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

rainforest bus tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

rainforest bus tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

rainforest bus tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

rainforest bus tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

rainforest bus tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
