‘The Long Goodbye’: The Eagles announce farewell tour with Steely Dan

"This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on"

The Eagles

The Eagles have announced a farewell live tour across North America with Steely Dan – find all the details below.

The legendary band will begin the run of shows – titled ‘The Long Goodbye’ – at Madison Square Garden in New York on September 7 ahead of further performances in Boston (September 11), Newark (16) and Elmont, New York (20).

Resuming in early October, the group’s final tour is then set to visit Denver, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland and Atlanta before additional stop-offs in other cities throughout November.

‘The Long Goodbye’ will see The Eagles – comprising Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – “perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands”, per a press release.

The tour is expected to continue into 2025, but further dates – potentially including the UK and Europe – are yet to be announced.

To date, the Eagles have performed more than 70 sold-out shows, including five nights at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City, four nights at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, four nights at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, three concerts at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, three nights at the Forum in Los Angeles, and multiple nights in Austin, TX, Denver, CO, Nashville, TN, San Francisco, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Seattle, WA, St. Paul, MN, and Toronto, ON.

“From the title track — a 6 1/2-minute flamenco-reggae ballad— to the elegiac closer ‘The Last Resort,’ it’s consummately performed…”   – Los Angeles Times

“The band performed the album from front to back, following with a blazing greatest hits set that had the audience at the sold-out arena constantly on its feet…With no exception, the songs have aged well, but how could they fail with the Eagles’ five-part harmony and five guitar-approach… (Henley’s) voice sounded as strong and pliant as it ever has, easily hitting the highest of notes, while retaining his trademark huskiness.”   – Billboard

“By now the orchestra has been joined by a choir. The Eagles’ sound, with its glowing harmonies, barely needs them, but they add to the sense of occasion – and the delight of the crowd. I’ve never seen so many songs receive a standing ovation.”   – Daily Mail

“…the Eagles spent more than 2 hours and 40 minutes on stage performing most of the best-known songs in their oeuvre, their voices sounding as robust as they did half their lifetimes ago. And the show was all the best adjectives you can think of — exhilarating, breathtaking, stunning, magical, triumphant.”   – Charlotte Observer

“It was a soulful, technically brilliant concert, with state-of-the-art sound engineering, wonderful performances and beautiful visuals presented on a giant screen behind the musicians.”

-Buffalo News

And it was…sublime. Eagles have long had a knack for precise, recording-perfect performances, and playing “Hotel California” was perhaps the finest exposition of that. The sound mix was pristine, the vocal harmonies were rich…”   – Oakland Press

“Everyone in the arena seemed to leap to their feet and start applauding at once. For a split-second I actually felt my eyes start to mist up. It was just so overwhelming, the power of (Henley’s) voice, the beauty of the song, the majestic-ness of the symphony, the thickness of the nostalgia hanging in the air.”   – Charlotte Observer

“What made the “Hotel California” portion of Thursday’s set so stunning was just how airtight the Eagles sounded… The “Hotel California” portion of the set was near perfection – a tight, 50-minute showcase of musicality that would have been worth the price of admission alone. But the night was far from over.”   – Cleveland Plain Dealer

Hotel California  is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum by the RIAA. After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and won two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid in Town” and “Hotel California.”  Several of the songs from the album have never been performed since the original “Hotel California” tour.  The band’s  Their Greatest Hits 1971-1977  is the best-selling U.S. album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.

In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons. As the best-selling American band of the ’70s, and one of the top-selling acts of all time, the Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums and topped the singles charts five times. They have won six GRAMMY® Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The Eagles Announce ‘The Long Goodbye’ Farewell Tour Dates, Steely Dan to Support

The Eagles have just announced a series of 2023 tour dates, the first on their The Long Goodbye farewell tour. Fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act Steely Dan have been tabbed as support for the fall run.

Much like Deep Purple 's own The Long Goodbye tour, the trek does not have a set end date, though The Eagles are expected to be on the road through 2025 and will "perform as many shows in each marker at their audience demands," per a press release.

The band is currently comprised of Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey.

The first batch of dates features a total of 13 stops between Sept. 7 and Nov. 17, all of which can be seen further down the page.

Reflecting on their massively successful 50-plus year career and the upcoming farewell jaunt, The Eagles released the following statement:

The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Steely Dan Tell Trump Cover Band to Cover Their Anti-Trump Song

Eagles pay tribute to Jimmy Buffett at final tour kickoff: 'Sailing on that cosmic ocean'

Portrait of Melissa Ruggieri

NEW YORK – The Eagles have never been known for ornate live shows.

Rather, precise musicianship behind a trove of classic rock staples earns them deserved plaudits.

At the opening concert of what they’ve said is their last tour – aptly dubbed The Long Goodbye and expected to run into 2025 – the band anchored by founding member Don Henley and the long-tenured Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit served two hours of hits that were polished and exact.

But even with their businesslike approach, an undercurrent of emotion thrummed throughout Thursday’s two-hour set at a sold-out Madison Square Garden.

A vibe of finality reverberated in the signage advertising this “final tour.” The sadness in Henley’s voice was palpable when he noted the “rough six weeks” the Eagles experienced after the death of the band’s original bassist, Randy Meisner , in July And a two-song tribute to Jimmy Buffett later in the show triggered heart-wilting melancholy.

Endings are inevitable, but the Eagles are wrapping their five-decade career with a lengthy spin around the country and a generous 23-song set list that lulled for the first hour and rocked through the second.

The Boss on pause: Bruce Springsteen is postponing his tour to be treated for ulcers

The Eagles unveil 50 years of hits

The band’s hallmark harmonies rang through the opening minutes as Henley, Walsh and Schmit, joined by recent tour guests Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – son of the late Eagles legend Glenn Frey – and ace guitarist Steuart Smith lined the front of the stage for “Seven Bridges Road.”

The lead vocal roulette continued with Frey making the spirit of his dad proud on “Take it Easy,” Henley hitting stellar high notes during “One of These Nights” as he sang behind his drum kit, and Gill sweetly memorializing Meisner with “Take It To the Limit.”

The breezy SoCal adult contemporary fare that kept the Eagles bound to the charts in the early ‘70s – “Best of My Love,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Tequila Sunrise” – sounded rich with musical director Will Hollis (keyboards), Scott Crago (swapping the drum seat with Henley) and Michael Thompson (keyboards) augmenting the sound.

The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

Bassist Schmit, whom Henley reminded the crowd was a onetime member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band and coined the fandom term “ Parrotheads ,” sounded as limber as ever as his trademark high-tenor voice coated “I Can’t Tell You Why” with sleepy seductiveness.

But of course it was Walsh, with his nasal bray and elastic facial expressions as priceless as his searing solos, who pushed the show into more upbeat territory with the massive guitar chords of “In The City” and the delightfully off-kilter solo hit “Life’s Been Good.”

The Eagles pay tribute to ‘dear friend’ Jimmy Buffett

Those itching for air-guitar moments would soon receive their wish. But first, Henley shushed the crowd to say a few words about his “dear friend” Buffett.

“He’s now sailing on that cosmic ocean and having that cheeseburger with Glenn and Randy,” Henley said. “Jimmy made work look like play. He brought joy to everything he did, and one of his final wishes was we keep the party going.”

Schmit offered a dreamy take on the sublime “ Come Monday ” while Walsh donned a parrot hat to lead the audience through a singalong of “Fins.” The dedication was bittersweet as a glance around the venue of people making the overhead “fins” motion underscored the reality that we’ll never see Buffett lead that chorus again.

The Eagles request that fans not take video. Good luck with that

The Eagles had plenty of choruses left to entice fans, including Henley’s wistful “Boys of Summer,” a suitable follow-up to the Buffett tribute; a rollicking “Heartache Tonight” spiked with Walsh’s slide guitar; and the adrenalized “Life in the Fast Lane.”

Throughout much of the concert, beleaguered ushers attempted to accommodate the band’s request – as on previous tours – to prevent fans from taking video. The assignment was like a game of Whac-A-Mole as arena staff tried in vain to deny people their obsession with recording during concerts by waving flashlights at the offending parties. Perhaps an announcement before the show would be helpful, because video messages didn’t seem to register.

But the rules were apparently loosened by the encore, a three-song capper of Walsh’s Talk Box-laden “Rocky Mountain Way,” Henley taking the center stage spotlight for a contemplative “Desperado” and, of course, singsong guitar licks being traded between Walsh and Smith in “Hotel California.”

Such a lovely place to say farewell to a rock ‘n’ roll behemoth.

Steely Dan makes a perfect musical match

Much like Aerosmith and The Black Crowes , the Eagles and Steely Dan – not saying goodbye, merely commemorating another lengthy career as a guest on the tour – are a dream team.

The ever-cool Donald Fagen strolled out in dark glasses and suit to the strains of “Josie” being unwrapped by the nine musicians – including a four-piece brass section and dazzling drummer Keith Carlock – who would help replicate Steely Dan’s intricate jazz-pop for an hourlong set.

Fagen’s voice was smooth and filled with character as he navigated “Hey Nineteen” and the head-nodding “Dirty Work.”

Always a band to listen to more than watch, Steely Dan wove through “Black Friday” – Fagen’s gnarled hands pushing the keys of his Fender Rhodes – and the insistent bass line of “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”

A rousing double shot of “My Old School” and “Reelin’ in the Years” adeptly laid the foundation for a night full of nostalgia, contemplation and celebration.

No Ceremonial Retirement Tour For Eagles' Veteran

John mcmullen | 4 hours ago.

Eagles' Brandon Graham (55) takes to the practice field during training camp Thursday at the NovaCare Complex.

  • Philadelphia Eagles

PHILADELPHIA - Considering the condition of the turf in São Paulo, Brazil, it’s probably a good idea to give the Eagles’ pass rush a mulligan while waiting to see what things look like on Sept. 16 against the Atlanta Falcons and a stationary target who doesn’t look comfortable coming off his Achilles injury in Kirk Cousins.

In Philadelphia’s season-opening 34-29 win over Green Bay, the Eagles were credited with two sacks – both by linebacker Zack Baun – and five quarterback hits.

“We didn't pass rush good enough overall in the game,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio admitted. “Did the field have something to do with that? Yeah, it obviously did. But overall we could get better there.”

The planned centerpiece of the pass rush, $51 million free-agent acquisition Bryce Huff recorded a clean sheet in the game, usually a positive on a soccer pitch but a very negative development made worse by the fact that 15-year veteran Brandon Graham (32 snaps) and second-year project Nolan Smith (31) played more than that proposed centerpiece (30 snaps for Huff).

Head coach Nick Sirianni downplayed that slight advantage in playing time for Graham and Smith over Huff on Monday and Fangio followed suit on Wednesday.

“I think most of our guys, if you look at it, we had five guys up and they all played about similar rep counts. We're just rolling those guys,” Fangio said.

There was a method to rolling, through.

Graham is by far the best run-support player the Eagles have on the edge and Fangio used him on first down nearly two times as much as Huff.

“He's improving,” Fangio said of Huff when asked about his ability to play the run. “Obviously we all had a play or two, I had a call or two that could have been better. But he's improving in that area.”

The veteran DC couldn’t help but smile when asked about Graham, who has confirmed this as his final season, by Eagles on SI.

“Brandon is still a good player, and I've told him several times, he's not on any ceremonial last-year retirement parade,” Fangio said. “He's going to play. He's still playing good.”

The idea of playing Graham on early downs in an attempt to get to third-and-long where you can set Huff loose is the type of personnel management that reminds you why Fangio’s reputation around the NFL is at the level it is.

Saquon Barkley gets first honor with Eagles. Did it leave Giants’ John Mara tossing and turning?

PHILADELPHIA — This news isn’t going to help John Mara sleep at night.

Saquon Barkley , in his first game with the Eagles , has earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

Signed as a free agent on a three-year deal worth $37.75 million, Barkley had one of the best games of his career in his debut with his new team, helping the Eagles pull out a 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in São Paulo, Brazil Friday night.

During the Giants’ Hard Knocks: Offseason documentary on HBO, Mara had told Giants general manager Joe Schoen that, “I’ll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia, I’ll tell you that.” Mara also told Schoen that in a perfect world he’d like to keep his star running back.

Nothing is perfect in the Giants’ world at the moment. New York lost by 22 points in its season opener at home against Minnesota while Barkley led the Eagles to a victory in his first game by compiling 132 yards from scrimmage and scoring three touchdowns on 26 touches.

It was the second three touchdown game of Barkley’s career and the first since his rookie year when he had three scores in his 10th career game against Tampa Bay for the Giants . It was also only the second time in Eagles’ history that a player scored three times in his debut with the team. Terrell Owens was the first against the Giants on opening day in 2004.

All three of Barkley’s scores allowed the Eagles to erase deficits in the game.

He caught an 18-yard touchdown pas from Jalen Hurts early in the second quarter to erase a 6-0 deficit, then broke free for an 11-yard run later in the quarter to put the Eagles ahead 14-12. His final touchdown came on a powerful two-yard run in the third quarter that erased a 26-24 Packers’ lead and put the Eagles ahead for good.

“He is going to bring some attitude back to the Eagles,” former NFL head coach and current NBC broadcaster Tony Dungy said after the game.

Barkley is also going to make offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s job easier as the Eagles’ play caller.

“Obviously I think Saquon is a premier player,” Moore said Wednesday shortly after the announcement about Barkley’s first honor with the Eagles was released. “He did an excellent job with his versatility and his ability to play in a number of different ways. We saw the pass game with him coming up with two catches. You saw the run game ... I thought he was downhill on our inside zones. He did an excellent job and obviously when he gets out in space he’s a guy who can make some really big-time plays.

“We’re excited and we’ll be able to diversify it as we go. We’ll play different styles depending on how the opponent wants to play us and he’ll provide us with that opportunity.”

This was the fourth time in Barkley’s career that he won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

He also won the award in Week 11 of his rookie season with the Giants when he had his aforementioned first three touchdown game against Tampa Bay. In Week 16 of the 2019 season, Barkley ran for 189 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries in a Giants’ win at Washington. And in 2022, Barkley opened the Giants’ season by running for 164 yards on 18 carries while also catching six passes for 30 yards in his team’s upset win at Tennessee. He also had a game-winning two-point conversion catch on a shovel pass in that opener.

As first tipped here last week, classic rock favorites the Eagles will embark on their first European tour in four years, set to kick off May 29 in Moscow. The seven-week run, billed as “An Evening With The Eagles,” will conclude July 22 in Glasgow and comes in support of last fall’s four-disc box set “Selected Works: 1972-1999” (Elektra). This incarnation of the Eagles will comprise Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, and as-yet-unnamed additional musicians. One member who won’t be on hand is longtime guitarist Don Felder, who was fired from the group in February. Felder has filed suit against Henley and Frey over the move, which the band says was made “in the best interest of the band.” Here are the Eagles’ European tour dates: May 29: Moscow (SC Olymplisky) June 1: Helsinki (Hartwall Arena) June 3: Stockholm (Globe) June 4: Oslo (Spektrum) June 6: Hannover, Germany (Preussag Arena) June 7: Cologne, Germany (Arena) June 9-13; 15-16: London (Earls Court) June 18-19: Manchester, U.K. (Evening News Arena) June 29: Belfast, Ireland (Stormont Castle) June 30: Dublin (RDS) July 3: Paris (Le Bercy) July 4: Ghent, Belgium (Flanders Expo) July 6: Amsterdam (Ahoy) July 10: Berlin (Waldbuhne) July 11: Frankfurt, Germany (Festhalle) July 13: Zurich (Hallenstadion) July 14: Lucca, Italy (Piatro San Martino) July 16: Munich (Olympiahalle) July 19-20: Birmingham, U.K. (National Indoor Arena) July 22: Glasgow (Hampden Park)

Oklahoma State Fair concert lineup 2024: How to see Hinder, Uncle Kracker and more

Portrait of Josh Kelly

The Oklahoma State Fair is set for several live music acts across the three stages next week.

What is ISIS-K, the terror group linked to the Moscow concert hall bombing?

Isis-k has eclipsed the once-fearsome core isis organization in iraq and syria as perhaps the most dangerous terrorist organization, u.s. officials and outside experts say, by ken dilanian and courtney kube | nbc news • published march 25, 2024.

When discussing the biggest threats facing the United States these days, U.S. intelligence officials invariably mention China and Russia , then often segue to cyberattacks, pandemics and climate change.

Islamic extremist terrorism , which animated American foreign policy and defense strategy for a decade and a half after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has receded as a top-tier concern.

The attack that  killed 133 people  in a Moscow concert hall Friday is a reminder, however, that the terrorism threat still looms.

The group that claimed credit, an offshoot of ISIS called Islamic State in Khorasan, or ISIS-K, has eclipsed the once-fearsome core ISIS organization in Iraq and Syria as perhaps the most dangerous terrorist organization, U.S. officials and outside experts say.

“It’s becoming more of a regional actor,” said Daniel Byman, a counterterrorism specialist at Georgetown University. “It claimed responsibility for the attack in Iran in January, and now we have this devastating attack in Moscow.”

The Iran attack was a double suicide bombing that killed almost 100 people at a memorial for the Revolutionary Guard commander  Qassem Soleimani . U.S. officials say ISIS-K also was responsible for the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport that killed 13 American service members and 170 Afghan civilians.

Caitlin Clark explains liking Taylor Swift's post endorsing Kamala Harris

Although U.S.-backed fighters five years ago drove the core ISIS from its so-called caliphate in Syria and declared victory, the remnants of the group remained. ISIS-K is believed to be active in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran, and appears to have aspirations to attack Europe and the U.S., American officials say.

According to a July 2023  report  to the United Nations Security Council, ISIS-K counts 4,000 to 6,000 members on the ground in Afghanistan, including fighters and their relatives.

To be sure, even if most of the U.S. public has largely stopped thinking about groups like ISIS, American defense officials have not. Gen. Michael Kurilla, who heads U.S. Central Command, told a House committee last week that ISIS-K “retains the capability and the will to attack U.S. and Western interests abroad in as little as six months with little to no warning.”

He also warned that core ISIS members are languishing in Syrian detention camps.

“Over 9,000 detainees across 27 different detention facilities in Syria,” Kurilla said. “We need to repatriate those detainees to either face prosecution or reintegration, rehabilitation, back into their societies.”

The good news, from the American perspective, is that the U.S. appears to have significant intelligence insights into the plans and intentions of ISIS-K. U.S. officials warned both Iran and Russia that ISIS-K was poised to attack in those countries before the fact. Putin  rejected the warning , but the the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a public statement warning Americans to stay away from concert halls.

“That’s pretty impressive,” Byman said. “It shows that U.S. counterterrorism capabilities remain an important factor. If they are trying to do something in Europe or the United States, there is at least a reasonable chance U.S. intelligence might be able to detect it.”

Still, American officials worry that, while they may detect planning that involves a number of terrorists, they cannot guarantee they will discover a plot that involves sending one or two people into the U.S., or one that involves a lone extremist who is already in the country.

Islamic State in Khorasan was founded in 2015 by breakaway members of the Pakistani Taliban. It includes people of Afghan and Pakistani origin, as well as Central Asians. The group is now at war with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, which puts it under pressure.

“I would say that ISIS-K poses a bit of a larger threat, but they are under attack from the Taliban regime right now,” Lt. Gen. Scott Berrier, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told senators earlier this month. “And it’s a matter of time before they may have the ability and intent to actually attack the West at this point.”

A number of ISIS-K plots in Europe have been disrupted, Byman said, including with a  wave of arrests  of people from Central Asia in Germany and the Netherlands in July.

In January, Turkish officials say two masked members of ISIS-K  attacked  and killed a person at a Catholic Church in Istanbul.

Russia, which invaded Afghanistan in the 1980s, crushed a rebellion in Muslim-majority Chechnya in the 1990s and backed the Syrian government against ISIS in the 2010s, has long been a target of jihadis, experts say.

“By attacking Russian targets, ISIS-K in part seeks to deter further Russian involvement in the Middle East,”  wrote  terrorism experts  Sara Harmouch  and  Amira Jadoon . “But also, such attacks provide high publicity for its cause and aim to inspire its supporters worldwide.”
