After breakfast, spend the morning exploring Egypt’s largest and best-preserved Pharaonic temple – the Temple of Horus at Edfu. Built to venerate ancient Horus, god of the Sun – later identified by the Greeks as Apollo – the site is a breathtaking glimpse into Hellenistic Egypt.

Back aboard, get hands-on with an aromatic Egyptian cooking lesson and reap the fruits of your labour over lunch as you cruise onward to the millennia-old agricultural settlement of Kom Ombo. Stroll through the charming village, positioned on a bend in the river where sacred crocodiles once basked in the sun. Bookings (except for cruise bookings and flights which are subject to the cancellation terms of the relevant supplier) may be cancelled with a full refund if cancellation occurs strictly within 7 days from the date of purchase and provided that the cancellation is made no less than 120 days prior to the departure date.

• After final payment is received, bookings are non-refundable unless otherwise provided for in our refund policy. Itinerary Amendments & Changes

• Occasionally our itineraries are updated prior to departure. This may be to accommodate changes in weather, public holidays, common seasonal changes to timetables and transport routes, and unforeseen circumstances.
• In the event of a change in itinerary (for safety reasons or due to events outside of our control) that results in cancellation or change fees in respect of flights (or other parts of your travel) we will notify you as soon as practicable.
• You will be responsible for any associated costs or will otherwise have the right to a refund (less any costs incurred or paid to third parties).
• After completing your booking, your tour cost may be subject to additional surcharges due to factors beyond the control of Luxury Escapes.

Travel Insurance

• Travel insurance is required on all our tours, which (at a minimum) covers medical expenses and repatriation. You may not be permitted to join the tour group if evidence of travel insurance is not provided prior to your trip. If you are unable to obtain travel insurance for whatever reason, you may be required to sign a waiver and/or provide a letter from a medical practitioner which confirms you are fit for travel. Passports & Visas

• A visa may be required. It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure they’re holding a current visa for the countries they’re visiting. If the traveller is on a non-Australian passport, a valid re-entry visa may be required.
• You are responsible for visas, entry, health and other requirements, and any documents required by laws, regulations, orders and/or requirements of countries visited. Luxury Escapes and/or its servants and agents are not responsible for passport and visa requirements or for any loss you sustain for failing to comply with laws, regulations, orders and/or requirements of countries visited.
• A valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months beyond your return travel date is required for all passengers (including children and infants).

Traveller Details

Travel Styles

• Fully Guided Tour: You’ll have a tour director and driver with you throughout the entire trip, from start to finish.
• Partially Guided Tour: You’ll have a tour driver and local guides at specific locations or portions of the trip, but not the entire time. There might be different local guides for different regions.
• Self-Guided Tour: You will not have a guide for your trip. You will be provided detailed trip notes with elements, such as accommodation and transport, pre-booked for you.

Health and Fitness Acknowledgement:

• Travellers acknowledge that they are required to have a good level of health and fitness to undertake the activities in this tour.
• There are limitations to the degree of accommodations that can be made if travellers are unable to partake in the included activities on this tour. Please consider suitability as additional costs could apply.

This New Luxury Nile River Cruise Is a Gateway to Egypt's Ancient Wonders

The sunbaked temples and tombs on the banks of the Nile River are books penned in stone. You do not pass through them as mere physical spaces. These walls are legible, carrying missives from another world. If the medium is the message, these enduring piles of engraved and painted rock amount to some of the most sophisticated communication devices in existence. That was my first thought as I wandered in amazement through Karnak, the vast temple complex in Luxor, and the idea stayed with me for the duration of my eight nights in Egypt.

I had arrived via Cairo from my home in Paris to experience the  Sphinx , a new Uniworld river ship. But I had also come to fulfill a childhood dream of exploring the relics of ancient Egypt. Upon arrival in Luxor, my fellow passengers and I were spirited away from the ferocious African sun at our first stop, Pharaoh Ramses II’s temple complex, by the gentle humor and substantive knowledge of our guide, Hazem Khalaf. Uniworld partners with the Egyptian-owned Spring Tours for its sailings, and Khalaf is its director — a genial Egyptologist who has been leading tours for 22 years. He treats his métier with the reverence of a master chef or doctor, or maybe even one of Hemingway’s priestly Spanish bullfighters.

A river cruise, among other things, is a study in repetition and rhythm. After several days on the Nile you start to get in touch with the more meditative qualities of moving along the water and contemplating the shifting landscape.

The previous day I’d met Emli Bendixen, the photographer for this story, at the Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, where the gardens tumble toward the Nile, and we acclimated ourselves to the silent power of the slowly moving water. There is a dignity to this river that is palpable, yet difficult to explain. It’s partly visual: those green depths cutting the dusty, palm-tree-studded riverbanks, covered with an intensely blue sky that later turns orange and purple, then finally inky black and splashed with stars. But the river’s dignity is also conjured just by the sound of its name. In the fourth century B.C., the Greek historian Herodotus reported in his  Histories  that “Egypt is the gift of the Nile,” and it is unimaginable that anything important or lasting could have occurred here in its absence.

The  Sphinx  is billed as a floating five-star hotel. This is what Khalaf and his friend of 20-plus years, Sameh El-Sayed, stress with the pride of creators. El-Sayed is the ship’s manager, and together they launched the  Sphinx  in September 2021. El-Sayed, who struck me immediately as a serious and meticulous man, oversaw the construction and design down to the hand-carved wood ceilings and marble bathrooms.

All of us were set up in cabins that felt more like grand suites, with floor-to-ceiling windows, king-size beds, and spacious sitting areas. (The  Sphin x also offers four Royal Suites, which have separate living rooms that are fit for entertaining.) Returning to the ship after the daily excursions was to retreat into a familiar bubble, to be fussed over, though never to the point where it felt invasive. The Egyptian men who cleaned and restocked the rooms and staffed the bars and dining rooms were as diligent as they were personable. As in much of the rest of the service industry here, the staff were categorically male; in this religiously conservative culture, spending weeks away from home is still not considered appropriate for women.

Bendixen and I took our meals together and grew fond of several of our regular waiters, none more than the attentive Abdo Zaref, who kept our glasses flowing with crisp Egyptian pilsners. No matter how many times we explained our professional situation to him, Zaref could not bring himself to believe that we were not married. “Is your husband coming down?” he would ask Bendixen with concern if she arrived at the table before me. One evening, when she fell asleep early, Zaref and several others helped me prepare a doggie bag “to take upstairs to your wife” so that she wouldn’t miss supper.

Meals were served on the first-level deck, which came with arresting water-level views. Among my favorite dishes were classics of the region, like couscous and  börek  (a puff pastry with salted cheese and yogurt dip) — along with surprisingly smooth Egyptian and Libyan wines.

It takes very little imagination to forget the hum of the engine and put yourself in the mindset of a visitor from another time who has come to pay respects to Sobek (the crocodile god) or Horus (the falcon-headed god).

I was eager to learn what motivated the other travelers, many of whom were aficionados of the high seas and various European rivers. “On a cruise you switch your brain off,” one retired American woman told me early on, and I began to notice the philosophical divide between the people who diligently rose at dawn to go on all of the demanding daily excursions and the people who played hooky, stretching out and sunning themselves on the deck in piña-coladified silence.

I fell somewhere in between, having jumped at this voyage in part to see Egypt and in part to flee the whirlwind pace of daily living in Paris — in other words, to slow down, accomplish less, purposefully read sentences on paper instead of a screen, and stare into the distance at sundown. For the duration of the trip, the Internet was reliably unreliable — and when it did work, a VPN was necessary to get around the government’s strict content blocks, which was either a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. For me, it was blissful relief.

After several days on the Nile you start to get in touch with the more meditative qualities of moving along the water and contemplating the shifting landscape, which at times grows lush — with tall grasses, date palms, and papyrus — and at other times more arid, with children and livestock dipping in and out of view at regular intervals as they climb boulders framed by sand dunes. Sometimes it reveals shocking sights, like men and donkeys washing by the banks beside an industrial complex spilling sudsy runoff.

Occasionally, the ship becomes a portal through which time travel seems genuinely feasible. The Greco-Roman temple at Kom Ombo near Aswan looms so large and substantial over the docking cruise ships it leaves you with the impression you can reach out and touch the worn columns from your window. It was in their honor that the structure was erected, and it is hard not to appreciate the resilience of the people who braved these predator-infested waters to worship — and even mummify — the reptiles that routinely attacked them.

Spring Tours provided shuttle buses that cocooned us in climatized comfort while Khalaf expounded capsule lectures on the history and vocabulary behind the day’s itinerary. On the way to the Valley of the Kings — where the pharaohs were buried in the barren, inhospitable hillsides before they shifted their capital from Memphis to Cairo and learned to build pyramids — we passed, beside a nondescript highway with ramshackle gas stations and convenience stores wrapped in blue Pepsi signage, one of the most awe-inspiring sights I have ever encountered: the Colossi of Memnon. It consists of two 59-foot-high seated statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, which have stood since 1350 B.C. Ruined and effaced almost beyond recognition, they nonetheless convey an almost supernatural severity I’d never experienced before. These are the remnants of a people who believed they possessed some measure of divinity in the here and now.

Farther up the road, and deep into the stone hills of the Valley of the Kings, I descended into Tutankhamen’s Burial Chamber and stood mesmerized before his partially shrouded, blackened, yet jarringly intact corpse. It was the size of a small child and I could count all 10 of his gnarled but impossibly tenacious toes. Finding yourself in the presence of physical spaces that have lived within your individual psyche (not to mention the culture’s collective consciousness) for so long is a profound and uncanny thing. Before this trip, it had only really happened to me at the Garden of Gethsemane in Israel and the Acropolis in Greece. In Egypt it happened over and over again.

As the cloudless sky grew black and pinholed with starlight, unveiling the razor-thin moon, I was reminded that Ramadan had begun — and that our gracious crew had been fasting and even abstaining from water since sunrise.

BY THE TIME the tour reached Aswan — one of the most important cities of Ancient Egypt — I had acclimated to my evening ritual on the roof deck, where I would clutch my cold gin and tonic as the air slowly cooled around me and contemplate the extraordinary sherbet-toned sunsets streaking the sky. I hadn’t expected the lushness and natural splendor of the ancient Nubian city and complex of islands in the river, on which visitors will find botanical gardens, archaeological sites, and temples. (Nubia was an early northeastern African civilization that ruled over parts of modern-day Egypt and the Sudan.)

We went bird-watching one morning among the islands. Diaa Araby, our tour guide that day, pointed out great blue herons, beautiful night herons, pied kingfishers, and reed warblers in the pampas grass along the banks of the river, as the traditional felucca sailboats zigzagged all around. “When you take the boat against the wind you have to tack back and forth,” Khalaf explained. “Steering a felucca on the Nile is like driving in Cairo!”

On one side of the river the steep, velvety dunes of the Sahara fall dramatically into the water. On the other side, there looms the colonial-era oasis of the Old Cataract Hotel, in green and brick-red hues. Among many other distinguished guests, Agatha Christie once holed up for a year in 1937 to write her novel  Death on the Nile . We had tea and cocktails on the hotel’s spectacular terrace one evening and I almost expected Hercule Poirot himself to appear. ASWAN REPRESENTED the climax of the cruise, and after that we retraced our route to Luxor. From there, some of us would continue on by plane to Cairo to visit the Pyramids — that lifelong dream for many of the passengers, myself included. At the airport in Luxor, there was a festive atmosphere as entire clans gathered to wave off the lone family members who had saved sufficient funds to make the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Upon landing in Cairo, political realities reasserted themselves. Egypt is a military dictatorship, lest anyone forget, and everywhere I looked in the capital, huge billboards and murals of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met my gaze. The tour whisked us to the cool sanctuary of the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, through the labyrinthine megalopolis that, just over a decade prior, had been the epicenter of an Arab Spring; those portraits serve as a reminder that it never materialized.

It’s good that the Pyramids and their hypnotizing, noseless guard arrive at the very end of the voyage. (Nothing can diminish these sights — not even the appalling presence of a Kentucky Fried Chicken, which Khalaf had joked the poor Sphinx must now stare at in perpetuity.) I can think of nothing that could fairly compete.

“I have often considered the survival of paintings and what it means for our civilization that an image has survived across time undamaged,” the novelist Rachel Cusk observed, “and something of the morality of that survival — the survival of the original — pertains, I believe, to the custody of human souls too.”

When we finally pulled up to the Pyramids and disembarked from the buses to make our way toward the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the only remaining “wonder of the ancient world,” one of the women in my group began to cry. “I have always wanted to see the Pyramids,” she said by way of explanation to no one in particular, wiping her eyes. I smiled at her and continued toward the immense mounds of stone. The morality of the survival of these three-dimensional images from the deepest civilized past is impressed to this day against the polluted, golden-blue contemporary sky. It demands precisely such a reaction, I thought, as my own eyes began to well.

Day 1 – Arrival in Cairo

Day 2 – Saqqara  /  Memphis  /  Dahshur

Day 7 – Tell el-Amarna  /  Prince Tawdrous Monastery  /  Sailing from Minya to Asyut

You continue sailing through Middle Egypt this morning, reaching Tell el-Amarna . This is where Pharaoh Akhenaten pursued his vision of a society dedicated to the cult of one god – Aten, the sun god – later considered heretical. Visit the nobles’ tombs with wall reliefs unequaled anywhere else in Egypt.

While sailing toward Asyut, you stop in front of Prince Tawdrous Monastery to view it from the boat. Tonight’s onboard dinner features exquisite Egyptian cuisine and an Egyptian Night costume party in traditional galabeyas.

Day 8 – Sailing from Asyut to Sohag  /  Q&A Session

Today, you can relax while cruising the Nile toward Sohag. Enjoy a drink on the beautiful sundeck while admiring the local wildlife, flourishing green fields, picturesque villages, palm trees and desert in the distance. Day 9 – Abydos Temple  /  Sailing from Sohag to Nag Hammadi

In the morning, you arrive at Abydos , the holy city of Osiris. There, you visit the Abydos Temple – also known as the Temple of Seti I, who began its construction. The temple is built of white limestone and, artistically, represents an attempt to restore the old ways after the heresies of Akhenaten. The temple once was the holiest site in the land and the burial place for the first kings of unified Egypt.

In the afternoon you return to your ship and begin sailing to Nag Hammadi. Enjoy the rest of the day relaxing and admiring beautiful landscapes around you.

Day 10 – Dendera Temple  /  Sailing from Nag Hammadi to Luxor

Today you visit Dendera , a temple complex with many chapels and shrines. Its main temple – one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt – is dedicated to the goddess Hathor. It sets itself apart from other temples by its colossal columns and spectacular ceilings covered with vibrant and colorful paintings.

Day 11 – Valley of the Kings  /  Valley of the Queens  /  Temple of Hatshepsut  /  Colossi of Memnon  /  Luxor Market

This is your first day in Luxor , the ancient capital city of Thebes. After breakfast, a short motorboat ride across the Nile takes you to the Valley of the Kings . It was a royal cemetery for over 500 years, and 62 pharaohs and other nobles were buried there. In the Valley, you see some of the best-known tombs, including King Tutankhamun’s , which was famously found intact in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter.

The Valley of the Queens is your next stop. It served as the burial site for the queens and some of the children of the 19th and 20th Dynasty pharaohs. You visit four very well-preserved tombs including Nefertari’s , which is regarded as the most beautiful in Egypt because of its vivid and ornate paintings. Later, you visit the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, one of the most characteristic temples in Luxor. It was built for the most successful female pharaoh to rule over Egypt. On the way back to the cruise ship you stop to admire the Colossi of Memnon , two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III.

Before dinner, enjoy a traditional belly dance performance. In the evening you explore Luxor Market , an authentic, open-air souk. There, you have a chance to connect with locals at every turn and sample regional delicacies.

Day 12 – Karnak Temple  /  Luxor Temple  /  Sailing from Luxor to Edfu

On your second day in Luxor, you visit famous Karnak , the largest temple complex in the world. Walk through the avenue of sphinxes, gaze up at the towering 97-foot-tall obelisk and wander among the massive pillars of the Great Hypostyle Hall.

Then, it’s on to the magnificent Luxor Temple . It was built over hundreds of years by the New Kingdom pharaohs including Tutankhamun and Ramses II. To this day the temple is one of the greatest reflections of the pharaohs’ power and supremacy.

Later you can enjoy refreshments on the cruise ship’s sundeck while sailing to Edfu or avail yourself of some of the ship’s other amenities.

Day 13 – Edfu Temple  /  Sailing from Edfu to Kom Ombo  /  Q&A Session  /  Kom Ombo Temple  /  Sailing from Kom Ombo to Aswan

Begin the day with a visit to the marvelous Temple of Edfu . It is among the best-preserved ancient temples in Egypt, built between 237 and 57 BC, and dedicated to the falcon god Horus. On the way along the Nile to the next site, take part in the third Q&A session with your Egyptology Expert . The sites you have seen over the past few days as well as those you have yet to discover are great talking points.

In the afternoon you visit the Greco-Roman Temple of Kom Ombo . It was built between 205 and 180 BC as a place of worship for two gods: Horus and Sobek, the crocodile god. The day ends with a visit to the Crocodile Museum , which houses a collection of mummified crocodiles and ancient carvings.

Day 14 – Unfinished Obelisk  /  Nubian Museum  /  Nubian Village  /  Aswan Old Souk

Start your sightseeing in Aswan with a visit to the Unfinished Obelisk , the largest-known ancient obelisk, lying on its side in a stone quarry. It measures around 140 feet tall and weighs nearly 1,200 tons. Later, you visit the Nubian Museum . It houses more than 3,000 artifacts and serves as a focal point for Nubian culture from prehistory to the present day.

After lunch, a motorboat ride takes you through the cataracts of the Nile to a Nubian village . There, you meet the Nubians and visit their homes and local school to experience their way of living. Back on board the cruise ship, you enjoy a Nubian party featuring traditional music and folk dances .

In the evening you stroll through the Aswan Old Souk , an atmospheric open-air market. Don’t forget to try the local shisha and taste some traditional Egyptian tea.

Day 15 – Temple of Philae  /  Aswan High Dam

Today your sail along the Nile comes to an end. It is, however, the beginning of another amazing cruise on Lake Nasser, a vast reservoir in the middle of the desert.

After lunch, you take a motorboat ride to the Temple of Philae , beautifully located on an island. The temple was built in 208 BC and dedicated to the goddess Isis. On the way back to the cruise ship, you stop to see the imposing 2-mile-long Aswan High Dam . Its construction began in 1960, lasted 8 years and cost $1 billion. The dam ended the cycle of flood and drought in the Nile River region.

In the evening you are invited to the captain’s cocktail party , where you mix with another crew and sample classic and creative cocktails.

Day 16 – Kalabsha Temple  /  Beit el-Wali Temple  /  Kiosk of Qertassi  /  Sailing from Aswan to Wadi el-Sebua

Bid farewell to Aswan and begin your exploration of the Nubian region of southern Egypt. Start with Kalabsha Temple , constructed in the Ptolemaic and Roman period. It has been described as “amongst the most precious remains of Egyptian antiquity”. The next stop is Beit el-Wali , a small rock-cut temple dedicated to Amun-Ra. It boasts a patio decorated with spectacular scenes from the military campaigns of Ramses II. Later, visit the Roman Kiosk of Qertassi that commands fine views of Lake Nasser.

While crossing the Tropic of Cancer on the way to Wadi el-Sebua, enjoy lunch and authentic Egyptian tea.

Day 17 – Temple of Wadi el-Sebua  /  Sailing from Wadi el-Sebua to Amada  /  Temple of Amada  /  Temple of Derr  /  Tomb of Penout

In the morning you visit the site of Wadi el-Sebua , which means “Valley of the Lions” – so called for the avenue of sphinxes that leads up to the temple built during the reign of Ramses II. Its remote location gives visitors the feeling that they are discovering this temple for the first time.

Next, explore the Temple of Amada , the oldest temple in Nubia, dedicated to the god Amun.

The Temple of Derr is your next stop. The only rock-cut temple in Nubia boasts well-preserved reliefs illustrating the Nubian campaign of Ramses II, who, accompanied by his famous pet lion, is smiting his enemies. Finally, admire the beautiful tomb of Penout , a high-ranking official who lived at the time of Ramses IV.

Day 18 – Sailing from Amada to Kasr Ibrim  /  The Citadel of Kasr Ibrim  /  Sailing from Kasr Ibrim to Abu Simbel  /  Abu Simbel Temples

Today you sail to Kasr Ibrim , the only ancient site in lower Nubia not to have been submerged by Lake Nasser. You view the Citadel of Kasr Ibrim from the ship’s sundeck, as visitors are not permitted to go ashore. The citadel features a range of different architectural styles, thanks to the area’s occupation by ancient Egyptians, Romans and, later, Coptic Christians. Archaeologists have uncovered here the world’s largest collection of Old Nubian texts.

Another sail brings you to Abu Simbel . There, you explore the majestic Abu Simbel Temples , one of the most impressive monuments of ancient Egypt. The temples were carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC for Ramses II and his wife Nefertari.

Day 19 – Abu Simbel Temples  /  Saladin Citadel & Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali  /  Farewell Dinner

In the morning, you revisit the Abu Simbel Temples . Take beautiful pictures of four colossal statues of the pharaoh facing the rising sun and looking out over a crystal-clear lake.

Then, a short flight takes you back to Cairo to top off the tour with a visit to the 12th-century Islamic fortress, known as the Saladin Citadel , and the Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali . The mosque was built on the summit of the citadel between 1830 and 1848, bringing an unparalleled contribution to the skyline of Cairo.

In the evening, during the farewell dinner , enjoy live music and celebrate your unforgettable journey across Egypt.

Day 20 – Departure from Cairo

During this one-day add-on, visit two of Cairo’s most important museums.* First, explore the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Tahrir Square. It was built in 1902, and its iconic pink-toned walls in the midst of downtown Cairo still house an extensive collection of pharaonic antiquities. After lunch, visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. A Marcus Thuram double helped Inter Milan to an emphatic 4-0 win over Atalanta on Friday, the second straight Serie A home win for the defending champions.

Inter, coming off a draw at Genoa and a 2-0 win over Lecce , scored twice in the opening stages of each half to prevail and provisionally move top of the standings with seven points.

The hosts opened the scoring just three minutes in when Thuram's low cross deflected off Atalanta's Berat Djimsiti into his own net, before Nicolo Barella doubled the lead with a stunning volley from the edge of the box seven minutes later.

"It is only week 3, this is not a signal to anyone. We tried to put in a good performance against a very difficult opponent, so we are very happy," Thuram, named man-of-the-match, told DAZN.

"'Bare' only scores spectacular goals! He does it in training all the time and I'm really happy for him," the France international added about Barella

Thuram scored twice in similar fashion after the break, taking advantage of loose balls from the visitors' poor defence to fire home from close range in the 47th and 56th minutes and seal the rout.

"This game might've seemed easy from the outside, but there are always risks and the intensity was really high." Barella said.
