2022 Hyundai H1 / Starex Van: Everything We Know About South Korea’s Bold New Transit Rival

Also known as the Hyundai Starex, i800, iLoad and iMax, the new H1 will get a major overhaul

The typical commercial van isn’t exactly the most desirable thing on the street, yet they’re a vital asset for those needing to haul in safe and secure comfort.

Hyundai’s entrant in this segment is known as the H1 as well as Starex Grand Starex, i800, iLoad and  iMax among many other names depending on the market and whether it’s the commercial or people mover variant. It’s not as popular as some well-known nameplates; however, a radical new redesign aims to change this.

Recently-spied prototypes cloaked in minimal camouflage indicate an imminent reveal, so let’s get in first and take a sneak peek before the covers are officially lifted.

A Bold Outlook

At first glance, there’s certainly no escaping the boldness of this redesign. Attention-grabbing frontal styling consists of a large rectangular grille and split-headlamps that feature thin horizontal LED DRL’s under the hood’s leading edge.

Going against the usual trend of having a small glasshouse-to-body ratio, the H1 flips the script by adopting a fish tank appearance with unusually tall side and rear windows. Minimalist sheet metal surfacing is refreshingly devoid of fussy styling flourishes, and the rear has a squared-off look with vertical LED taillights and a large spoiler.

A Nicer Place To Travel

Like the exterior, the cabin also takes a radical new direction; here, the dashboard cascades downwards around the center stack, exuding a more car-like appearance. The steering wheel is shared with other models in the Hyundai lineup, and the freestanding gauge cluster is similar to the one found in Ford’s Mustang Mach-E .

The H1 will again offer dedicated cargo and passenger carrying options, with the latter capable of seating up to 11 people. A significant increase in safety technology will likely feature autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear-collision braking.

Under The Skin

Depending on the market, the H1 will be powered by a mix of petrol and diesel engines. The oil burner is a 2.2-litre turbo-four pumping out 198 hp (148kW) and 325 ft-lb (440 Nm) via a new eight-speed automatic transmission. In regions where diesel is unpopular, Hyundai Motor Group’s new 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder could do the trick; it produces 286 hp (213 kW) and 311 ft-lb (422 Nm). There’s also been talk about a hybrid as well as a full-electric variant to go with the times, but that’s something we’ve yet to confirm.

Rivals & Reveal

The H1 competes with load haulers that include Volkswagen’s Transporter , Ford Transit Custom , Toyota Hiace/Granvia , Mercedes-Benz Vito and Renault’s Trafic .

We anticipate an official reveal in the coming months, as an MY2022 entrant.

Many, many years ago in my relative infancy as a motoring scribe a colleague and I – perhaps after a longer than normal lunch – conspired to come up with what we fondly imagined was a shriekingly funny headline for a story; ‘Forget about us, we’re on the bus’.

It wasn’t, it isn’t and yet, in that rather bizarre way in which this world of our operates, it is aptly descriptive of the time spent with the new look Hyundai H1 Bus.

It took no time at all behind the wheel to forget I was driving a bus and to start treating it like a car, albeit one with rather enhanced forward vision – the big reminder always the step up to get into the vehicle.

There is both good and bad in that – the good being as a people mover, the ease of driving makes light work of the fact it is a big vehicle and the bad; well, it really is not designed to be ‘Vetteled’ at speed like a race car on twisty roads.

Not that it actually minds, coming fully equipped with anti-lock braking and a stability control system to temper over enthusiasm back to more reasonable limits.

The new look for the H1 Bus is dominated by redesigned nose section, giving the 9-seater bus (and its panel van sibling) a modern look that fits in with the styling of the passenger car and SUV range of the Korean manufacturer.

New 17-inch alloy wheels are added to the 2,5-litre turbo-diesel derivative on test, while the addition of an infotainment centre with a large touch-screen enhances the list of interior luxury and comfort features in both 9-seater derivatives.

A steering wheel that can now adjust for reach as well as height makes the driving position in the H1 even more comfortable and a rear camera as parking assistance, with display in the rear-view mirror, is a luxury feature in the 2.5 Turbodiesel Bus – and is extremely useful for shuttling around tight spaces considering it is 5,1 metres long!

Night driving is now improved with the addition of projection-style headlights that illuminate the road ahead and to the side more effectively.

Other standard features include Bluetooth connectivity for the infotainment’s sound system with multifunction controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, full automatic air-conditioner with climate control, glove box cooling, side air bags and power folding mirrors.

The 2 497 cc turbo-charged diesel engine delivers 125 kW maximum power at 3 600 r/min and 441 Nm maximum torque at 2 250 r/min driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

Those values are more than enough to negate any noticeable losses when the vehicle is fully laden with adult passengers and the benefit of the turbo at higher altitudes will also minimise any power losses.

It is no slouch and more than happy to ‘get-up-and-go’ when the loud pedal is pressed. In normal driving both in town and on the open road the gearbox is smooth and efficient in adapting to driver input and changing conditions – enough that most will not need to switch it into the sportier manual mode.

Rack and pinion steering ensures crisp responses while hydraulic assistance reduces the effort required in tight situations. The H1 Bus is easy to park and along with the generous glass area and substantial mirrors, there is the park-assist rear-view camera.

The H1 series is equipped with McPherson type strut with gas shock absorbers for its front suspension and for the H1 9-seater Bus a rigid axle 5-link rear suspension with oil-filled shock absorbers ensures a comfortable ride.

Pricing includes Hyundai’s 5-year/150 000 km warranty, with an additional 2 years/50 000 km manufacturer’s powertrain warranty, as well as a 5 year/150 000 km roadside assistance plan and 5-year/90 000 km service plan.

So, forget about us, we’re on the bus!

Terms and conditions of rent.

The minimum age for RentMotors rentals is 21 years of age for all vehicle groups. At the time of pick-up you will need to present a a valid national identity card or a passport at the rental counter as photographic identification, a valid national driver's license which has been held for at least 2 years and your credit or debit card to cover the estimated charges arising from your rental, including a full tank of fuel. An International Driver's Permit (IDP) is recommended for anyone living outside of Russia. Non EU nationals will need to present a valid passport (in Roman script) as proof of identity.

The following forms of payment are accepted: most major credit and debit cards. Acceptable debit cards must carry a VISA OR MASTERCARD/EUROCARD Logo. Visa Electron, any Entertainment cards or Maestro cards are not acceptable debit cards. Cash is not accepted. The card must be in your name and the issue/expiry dates should overlap the period of rental. The minimum rental charge is for one rental day. A rental day starts when the rental begins and lasts 24 hours. The grace period is 2 hours and in case of late return of the vehicle (exceeding 120 minutes) you will charged of daily rental rate.

You are responsible to RentMotors if the vehicle is lost or damaged, as well as for traffic fines and other charges that arise during the rental. At the time of pick-up you'll pay a full amount based on the estimated rental charges including extras and we will require a deposit amount depending on car group. The deposit will be returned not later than 30 days after the rental, as long as all conditions have been met. All rates are included Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection. These reduces your liability to us to the amount of the applicable excess (stated on your Rental Agreement) which applies to each incident related to loss of or damage to the vehicle caused by theft, attempted theft or vandalism. These options is cover is only valid if you stick to the terms of the rental agreement and such incident has been registered by the Police Department. If you are not accused of the accident and you observed traffic regulations, and also a guilty party stated in your incident record, we will refund the deposit in full. Otherwise, the you shall be liable within the limit of the deposit.

Renter may also wish to purchase an additional cover, 'Full Protection', to further reduce/waive your already limited liability in case of damage to, or theft of the RentMotors vehicle, its parts and accessories, including those losses resulting from collision, vandalism, provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the rental agreement.

All rental rates are limited kilometres per day; additional kilometres are charged for every 1 kilometres extra. RentMotors vehicles may be driven into in any European country with a special permission of company representative, but cannot be dropped off outside the Russian Federation. Restrictions may apply for certain countries which may require the renter to pay additional fees.

The vehicle belongs to RentMotors and Renter may not sub-rent, transfer or sell it. The Renter may not use the vehicle: - On an unpaved road, if damage or loss to the car results directly from the road or driving conditions; - To carry persons or property for hire (i.e., for a charge or fee); - For sub-renting; Fitting unauthorised objects to the interior or exterior of the vehicle. - Under the influence of alcohol, drugs, barbiturates, medicines causing hallucination or other absorbed elements which may adversely affect a person's ability to drive safely or allow any such person to operate the car;

A one way rental is a rental which starts at one location and terminates at another. Availability is subject to location restrictions and vehicle type. A fee may apply for this service and will be advised at time of reservation.

Airport Service Charge is a mandatory charge that applies to all rentals with pick-up at airport/railway stations. Delivery & Collection charges apply if you request that your rental vehicle is delivered to or collected from a location (hotel, apartment, etc.) other our rental location. You might incur additional charges if you return the vehicle at a different time or place to that agreed with us or if it is in a particularly dirty or smelly condition, it will incur an extra charge. Your rental is provided with a full tank of fuel. You can either return the vehicle full or pay for refill the tank for you at the rate. You may return the car outside of normal office hours, whether for the pick-up or the drop-off, we will arrange for a staff to be available. Prior notification is required for this service and it will incur an extra fee. If we agree to you returning outside location hours, please be aware that you will be responsible for the vehicle until our staff locate it when the location re-opens.

Safety seats are mandatory in Russia for children up to 12 years. If the child is taller than 150cm no seat is required. RentMotors offers safety seats for children from all locations and for all vehicle groups. The portable navigation system is available for rent.
