WestJet launches new TA resource site

WestJet has launched a new resource web site for travel agents.

The newly developed site features easy access to travel agent communications and JetMails, current information on seat sales, promo codes, travel agent contests and any other WestJet related news to help travel agents better serve their clients.

“WestJet and WestJet Vacations are fully committed to supporting travel agents,” said Lyell Farquharson, WestJet vice-president, Sales. “Our intent is to be open and fair, while continuing to adapt many of the suggestions travel agents have provided us with over the years. The travel agent resource site, the WestJet Vacations Price Guarantee and new commission schemes are all new initiatives created to add further value to the agency experience.”

The resource site was designed with feedback from the travel agent community. Additional features provide the ability to download and print PDF offers and marketing materials for clients, easy access to reference material like GDS tips, ticketing information and the interactive brochure manual, all in an effort to enhance the guest experience for the client while also improving the WestJet experience for agents.

WestJet to Axe Agency Travel Portal WestJet Connect

WestJet is winding down its travel agency portal, WestJet Connect, it announced this week via a memo through IATA.

A WestJet spokesperson confirmed the news, which was first reported by PAX , to TMR on Wednesday, writing that while it is committed to providing agency partners with a new booking option, the WestJet channel will be decommissioned on Oct. 24.

“WestJet remains committed to its agency partners and is actively working to provide travel agents with a new booking option. More information on timelines and what partners can expect will be shared as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.

While WestJet didn’t have a timeline for the new booking option, it did say that agents who require support with bookings scheduled to depart after Oct. 24 are can call WestJet's Travel Support Team at 1-877-664-3205. Travel agent partners may also contact  [email protected] .

WestJet will also still allow GDS users to book through their preferred GDS—WestJet spokesperson confirmed that WestJet will still allow for GDS bookings, including contracted commission levels.

WestJet announces UltraBasic fare with no carry-on bag

CALGARY — WestJet Airlines has replaced its basic ticket tier with a new fare category that does away with a free carry-on bag and other perks travellers once took for granted.

The Calgary-based airline said Tuesday its new “UltraBasic category,” the lowest-priced of seven fare classes, is a no-frills fare. 

Travellers flying UltraBasic get pre-assigned seats at the back of the aircraft and will have to pay extra to select a seat, even when checking in. They will also board last.

They will also not be permitted to stow a carry-on bag in the overhead bins, unless they choose to pay extra for that privilege. However, UltraBasic travellers can still bring a personal item to be stored under the seat, and a carry-on is included for trans-ocean routes.

WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech first hinted at the news last month in Calgary, telling a local business audience that the move will appeal to the most budget-conscious travellers.

On its website, WestJet said the introduction of UltraBasic will result in price reductions across its routes. The airline committed to providing affordable options after shutting down its ultra low-cost airline Swoop and buying the low-cost Sunwing Airlines.

The airline also expects the move to help free up coveted overhead bin space and make the boarding process smoother overall.

“It is anticipated that the introduction of UltraBasic will expedite the boarding process, contributing to enhanced on-time performance and a better guest experience,” the airline stated.

WestJet is not the first airline in Canada to offer a “no carry-on” discounted fare, as Edmonton-based Flair Airlines’s standard fare only allows a free personal bag.

Until 2014, the ability to check one bag was included in the cost of an airline ticket in Canada. That was the year WestJet announced it would begin charging passengers a fee for their first checked bag, and Air Canada quickly followed suit.

WestJet said there will be clear messaging about the new UltraBasic fare and its limitations throughout the booking process, so that travellers don’t arrive at the airport unaware that they cannot travel with a carry-on bag.

“Digital and printed boarding passes will also indicate no carry-on bags are permitted with UltraBasic fares,” the airline said.

WestJet says UltraBasic travellers will have the same access to onboard food and beverages, as well as access to the WestJet Connect inflight entertainment system, as before.

American Airlines Backtracks, Will Allow Travel Agency Customers to Keep Earning Miles

American Airlines tried to drag an entrenched industry toward the airline's vision of a more productive distribution future. But the financial hit stung.

Online and offline travel agencies had faced a July 11 deadline: That’s when flyers buying American Airlines tickets on certain booking sites would have no longer been able to earn AAdvantage Miles.

But American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Wednesday that the airline has dropped the idea. It was part of an overall retreat in American’s direct-booking strategy as it faces softness in close-in bookings and a weaker financial outlook.

“Next month, we were going to differentiate who earned AAdvantage Miles and who didn’t, based on where they booked. That’s off,” Isom told investors and analysts at a Bernstein conference. “We’re not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer, and we’re going to make sure that we take care. We’re listening to feedback.”

The plan had been that the airline would designate “preferred agencies” — who were required to book at least 30% of their flights through American’s New Distribution Capability — and customers of these online and offline travel agencies would have been able to continue to earn AAdvantage miles when buying tickets on these third-party sites.

Travel agencies that didn’t get the airline’s stamp of approval faced the prospect of losing lots of customers who would have had to book American flights on AA.com or a preferred agency.

The airline initially said it would designate preferred agencies by May 1, and later moved that deadline to July 11.

Travel Agency Reaction

Many agencies had no clue if they were going to make the cut.

Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors, had fought the airline’s distribution policies, and applauded the airline’s reversal.

“I’m grateful for American Airlines’ renewed recognition of the essential role that travel advisors play in facilitating air travel for our shared customers,” Kerby said. “I want to extend my thanks to American Airlines CEO Robert Isom for acknowledging its previous approach was flawed. Reversing the decision to withhold AAdvantage points and miles for agency bookings is a testament to the firm position that travel agencies hold in the airline distribution channel.”

Kerby said he welcomed the opportunity to work with American Airlines on a “responsible implementation of its NDC program.”

When the news came, ASTA was coincidentally conducting it annual national conference in Dallas, in the airline’s Fort Worth headquarters back yard.

American hasn’t definitively given up on direct distribution, however.

“We’re learning and adapting,” Isom said. “We know that NDC, modern retailing provides a better experience for the end customer. And we know that we will get there over time, but we have to go about it differently. We’re going to make it easier, we’re going to execute better and we’re going to do a lot more to try to bring people along with us.”

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

The WestJet Group welcomes an additional Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, enhancing fleet expansion plans

The WestJet Group today announced it will acquire a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from aviation leasing company, AerDragon. The aircraft is expected to integrate into the WestJet Group’s fleet and operations in 2024. The aircraft received from AerDragon will add to the growing list of new-to-WestJet aircraft, joining the Group’s fleet this year.

“In partnership with AerDragon, we are adding to our Boeing 737 MAX family and building momentum towards supporting our capacity growth plans for 2024,” said Mike Scott, WestJet Group, Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer. “Every aircraft added to our fleet means critical air access for Canadians and today’s announcement further reaffirms our mission to provide affordable air travel.”

While WestJet guests will benefit from the additional capacity across the airline’s network, the aircraft will not immediately reflect the interior cabin experience, synonymous with the WestJet Group. Updating and refreshing the interior cabins of the aircraft will be prioritized as part of the airlines’ existing fleet reconfiguration plans, to ensure a consistent experience for guests across its operation as soon as possible. 

 “We are pleased to welcome WestJet to AerDragon’s growing list of customers. We look forward to continuing to support WestJet’s development and building a long-term partnership with the airline.” said Gang Li, AerDragon’s Chief Executive Officer.
