London as a Literary Destination

For fans of classic literature, there is no better place to visit than the UK, and London in particular. From Oxford University, which not only served as a filming location for one of the most famous British books in the world, Harry Potter, but also saw the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien as a professor, among many other famous names. And for fans of JK Rowlings series, don’t miss a stop at Kings Cross station for the Platform 9 and 3/4 photo op!

A walking tour of London is one of the best ways to visit such classic sights as Charles Dicken’s house, the Eagle and Child Pub where C.S. Lewis and Tolkien often met, and The George Inn where Shakespeare is rumored to have stayed.

You’ll also visit the Globe Theater, which although it is a replica, still lives up to it’s legacy, offering performances, education, and history tours. While a stroll along the Thames is a way to feel like you’re a part of your own British novel.

Kings & Queens

A visit to London would not be complete without touring castles and visiting Buckingham Palace. The Changing of the Guard is a time honored tradition, and an especially entertaining activity when traveling with children. The Tower of London is another can’t miss sight, for all its gruesome history.

Taking in a classic British high tea is a way to treat yourself like royalty, and there’s no shortage of opportunities. However, it is very much a tourist activity. While most Londoners and locals of the wider UK enjoy an afternoon tea, the concept of “high tea” with scones and jam and mini sandwiches is very much associated with a posh lifestyle. Definitely not an everyday thing.

Popular Day Trips from London

There is never enough time to explore the complete London sites, but there is more to the UK than this vast city that you can explore on a day trip from London. Take a trip outside the city and explore surrounding spa cities, adventurous spots, and seaside towns in the British countryside.

1. Stonehenge

The famous UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most ancient monuments, not only in England but all over the world. The mysterious history of the historical monument and the unique placement of the huge stones attracts thousands of visitors here every year.

Be amazed by the magnificent structures situated in the fascinating surrounding. The nearby Salisbury museum features various artifacts related to the place that will tell you about the known history of the place.

2. Whitstable

The seaside town located on the northern coast of Kent is the best place to kick off a day, taking a break from the bustling capital in the UK. The place is famous for its Native Oysters that have been collected since Roman times and are still celebrated at the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival. If you want to have the true essence of the beauty of the coast, rent a bike and set off to pedal along the Oyster Bay Trail.

This beautiful Georgian city is famous for the preserved ancient Roman baths with marvelous Roman architecture, paving stones, and steaming pools. Wander around the city to explore the World heritage sites, abbeys, and churches and enjoy the cosmopolitan environment and visit one of the various pubs to enjoy the best ale in the UK.

4. Windsor Castle

The largest and oldest inhabited castle of the world is Queen's favorite weekend home. This historical Hallmark is also used for ceremonial and state occasions. An elaborated visitor's route gives access to the St. George's Chapel, State Apartments, and many more. The stately rooms and halls are filled with treasures from the royal collection and fascinate everyone with their impressive outlook.

5. Stratford and Oxford

The beautiful cities are known to be romantic centers in England. Located only a few hours away from the bustling capital, they are an entirely different world. Stratford, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, will inspire you while taking you through the cobbled streets, among the stunning cottages. Move forward with your exploration to the city with the most famous University City of the world, roaming between the different colleges and their majestic fairytales like towers and spires.

6. Bray, Berkshire

The stunning village is a perfect place to take a break from the metropolitan center city and take a day off to explore the greens and hamlets of the English countryside. The village has a magical attraction during spring and summertime. Explore the area on foot and make sure to visit one of the two Michelin Star restaurants in the UK; The Fat Duck and The Waterside Inn. Go for advance reservations for the restaurants as the waiting lists are so long to keep you hungry.

Getting Around London

To comfortably travel in London, you should be aware of your transportation options, rates, timing, convenience, etc. There are various ways to travel in London like through the excellent underground or overground tubes, railways, buses, trams, taxis, bicycles, car rental, etc.

The best way to travel around cheap is to get an oyster card that works in all parts of the city for the underground, overground, trams, and the red London buses. The well-maintained network of public transport will take you to every corner of the town. The fares for peak and off-peak hours are different so, if you want to travel even cheaper, plan your trip in advance.

Avoid traveling on peak hours; between 06:30 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 17:00. Tubes are the fastest way to travel while buses are the cheapest. While you are in London, you must travel to the tube for once at least. But in these cases, you miss most of the sightseeing while traveling around. Hiring a bike can be a more adventurous, exploring, and easy way to move around the city.

There are designated cycle lanes throughout the city that means you will save lots of time that would otherwise be spent in traffic jams or while you are crammed among people on the tube stations. Plan your journey beforehand, and don't forget to wear your helmet. Another way to travel in London while enjoying all the sightseeing is to book a guided bus tour that will take you around the city through every important point.

During your London visit, you will surely have to hire a black cab at least once. There are 3 different tariffs depending on the time when you are traveling. Agree on a price with the driver before starting the ride, or you will have to pay the full amount from the meter after reaching your destination. Taxi is not a cheap way to travel but can come handy at times.

The heaviest tourist season runs mid-April through mid-October, with another peak around Christmas—though the tide never really ebbs. Spring is the time to see the countryside and the royal London parks and gardens at their freshest; fall to enjoy near-ideal exploring conditions. In late summer, be warned: air-conditioning is rarely found in places other than department stores, modern restaurants, hotels, and cinemas in London, and in a hot summer you'll swelter. Winter can be rather dismal, but all the theatres, concerts, and exhibitions go full speed.

It's virtually impossible to forecast London weather, but you can be fairly certain that it will not be what you expect. It's generally mild—with some savage exceptions, especially in summer. In short, be prepared for anything: layers and an umbrella are your friends.

Make the most of your London holiday

London is a city that could keep you entertained for months. With so much to see, it can be hard to know where to start. Our guide to city breaks in London will help to make sure that your trip ticks all the right boxes.

Where is the best place to stay in London

London’s hotel scene is diverse and exciting, and there are hundreds to choose from. This makes deciding where to base yourself a conundrum. Staying in central London or the glitzy West End means you’ll be at the heart of it all, with Covent Garden, Soho and the Southbank on your doorstep. It’s a fun place for first-time visitors to really soak up the city spirit, with luxury and budget options. But other parts of town are equally appealing. Business travellers often make for the City of London, where smart hotels abound. South Kensington and Chelsea have more of a quaint feel with boutique hotels plus the Natural History Museum and the V&A. Fashionistas flock to Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Marylebone with its five-star hotels, and fabulous shopping.

How to see London on a budget

Although jaunting around London can be expensive, there’s still plenty to see and do on a budget. Whether you’re on a luxury break or are carefully spending your pennies, our handy guide will help you get the most out of your money each day with hotel, food and sightseeing suggestions.

President Hotel

Check in to the President Hotel, just a short walk from the West End and Covent Garden. It’s conveniently located close to Russell Square Tube on the Piccadilly line, and you can travel straight to London Heathrow Airport on the Underground.

Eat on a budget

London is a city where you can dine like a king for just a few pounds. Walk to Chinatown for delicious dim sum at a steal, or head to one of Soho’s cool cafés. Another good spot is Kingly Court, which has a lovely al-fresco courtyard and scores of reasonably-priced restaurants.

Get out and walk

It’s free, and a great way to see some of London’s loveliest landmarks. Start at Westminster, then marvel at Big Ben and Westminster Abbey before walking along to the Southbank to Tower Bridge. Or, walk to South Kensington and explore some of London’s wonderful free museums including the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the V&A.

The Cumberland

In a prime position just off Oxford Street, The Cumberland, London is the ultimate spot for live music. Every evening they host a different music genre, so you're bound to find something to satisfy your music tastes. SOUND will also whet your appetite with a menu filled with comfort food.

Eat deli style

Once you’re shopped out in Marylebone, make for cool deli La Fromagerie for fine cheese or nibble on Indian street food at Roti Chai.

Get cultural

See some theatre in the West End. For last-minute tickets head to Leicester Square’s TKTS booth, where you can buy tickets from as little as £15. The Lion King and Matilda are fun-filled family classics, while controversial The Book of Mormon remains a crowd-pleaser.

Shangri-La London

Wake up in style at the Shangri-La London, 125 metres high. All rooms offer phenomenal city views, but there's something quite magical looking out from London's highest infinity pool.

Spoil yourself

Splash out at Spring at Somerset House where super chef Skye Gyngell serves seasonal cuisine in leafy surrounds. Expect to pay around £150-£200 for a dinner for two. Afterwards zip to the nearby Radio Rooftop bar at ME London for cocktails with a view.

See London from above

If the sky’s the limit, hire your own capsule in the London Eye for two, or take a breathtaking ride in a helicopter and whizz above the Thames with London Helicopter.

The Best Time Of Year To Plan A Trip To London

London Big Ben

London is packed full of things to explore. But considering the timing of your London visit is crucial. While you might initially think that summer is a great time for a U.K. holiday, a winter visit comes with cheaper prices and fewer tourists. It's a good idea to check out the array of great events throughout London's winter months before you book your flights. You might just find a must-visit event worth aligning your trip with — and if not, there's still plenty to keep you busy.

From can't-miss sites like the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben to London's 192 museums or its world-renowned galleries, there's a lot to check out in the U.K.'s capital city, even in the winter. If nightlife is more your scene, you'll find several incredible theaters hosting everything from Hamilton to Hamlet, buzzing nightclubs for every music taste, and countless local pubs where you can enjoy a pint or three.

Winter is a great time to visit London

If you're planning a trip to London during the summer months expecting blue cloudless skies and endless sunshine, you may well be disappointed. The U.K.'s weather is notoriously changeable, and even though June will, of course, be warmer than January, you may be hit with a rain shower all the same. And if you do arrive during a heatwave, bear in mind that not everywhere has air conditioning — several lines of the London Underground in particular will be a hot and sticky ride.

As for a winter visit, you'll definitely experience a cooler climate (think 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit) and a high likelihood of rain. But you'll also be able to embrace pub culture to the fullest with a cozy fireside roast dinner. There'll be fewer tourists at London's main attractions, while locals will be at work or school. You'll avoid paying through the roof for a top hotel, and flight prices will be lower, too. And when the heavens open, just use it as an excuse to hail a black cab and get the full London experience.

All the winter events in London you can't miss

Let's start with the obvious: A December visit to London means you can enjoy the  Christmas market season , visit Hyde Park's beloved Winter Wonderland, and get stuck into some last-second holiday gift shopping for your loved ones who love to travel . And as day turns to night, the array of fairy lights strung across every attraction will make your Instagram photos even more picturesque. Head to Covent Garden for a stunning display, or go to Kew Gardens to see its extravagant illuminated light show.

January and February also have some great events that are worth planning your trip around, without the same crowds and damage to your wallet that December brings. If you're desperate to soak up London's festive vibe, you can go skating at Canary Wharf ice rink, which remains open until late February 2024. Later in the month, Burn's Night celebrations break out across London pubs, where you can get stuck into a haggis supper or go ceilidh dancing to commemorate this Scottish holiday.

With its many extravagant restaurants and stunning rooftop bars, London is a great place to spoil your partner (or impress your date!) on February 14, giving them a downright awesome Valentine's Day experience . And make sure to visit during London Fashion Week in February to see the city buzzing with shows, designers, and the best-dressed people in the world.

Booking a 2025 holiday in advance also gives you something to look forward to, especially if you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list holiday .

If you're already in planning mode, you've come to the right place, as we’ve put together the ultimate selection of hotspots to visit in 2025.

For an unforgettable 2025 holiday in Europe , why not pick a slightly more unusual location like Transylvania , where gothic castles tower high on rugged mountain peaks?

If sun and fine wine are more your thing, a cruise along Portugal 's sun-kissed Douro River might appeal. Or head for the sunny shores of Madeira , where the 2025 Flower Festival takes place in April, attracting garden-lovers from all over the world. For those looking to venture further afield, consider a once-in-a-lifetime tour or cruise Japan . An ever-popular choice for a bucket list holiday, it's always worth planning ahead for Japan tours , as they tend to sell out quickly.

The same goes for expedition cruises to Antarctica. This is the only way to visit the White Continent, so you'll want to bag your place on the ideal expedition cruise with expert guides nice and early if it's on your 2025 wish list.

Here’s our ultimate list of the top holidays for 2025.

An icy escape in Transylvania

a room with a stage and a group of people in white clothing

If a cold-weather holiday is on your wish list for 2025, consider the mountains of Transylvania, which are packed with Gothic castles, medieval villages, and dense spruce forests. In the enchanting city of Brasov, you can stroll the cobbled streets, seeing its towering Gothic-style Black Church before pausing to warm up in one of the town's bohemian cafes hidden away on snow-dusted alleyways.

To really get to know the snowy terrains of Transylvania, check in at the unique Ice Hotel in the Carpathian Mountains. This special hotel is built every year entirely of snow and ice blocks from a glacial lake. You can stay there on a special trip with Good Housekeeping in 2025.

For a truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure in 2025, Antarctica is hard to beat. With its harsh climate and uninhabited landscapes, drifting icebergs and incredible wildlife, it's only suitable for more intrepid travellers, but there are plenty of rewards for those ready to take on the challenge.

The Swiss rail network is famously efficient and also offers some of the most exquisite mountain views in Europe. From the serene beauty of Lake Geneva to the majestic heights of the Bernina Mountains, Switzerland's natural splendour is truly unparalleled.

You can see it for yourself on Good Housekeeping's Swiss rail holiday in 2025. You'll stay in a four-star hotel in Interlaken, cruise across picturesque Lakes Thun and Lucerne and head up into the mountains on the iconic Glacier Express, enjoying a three-course lunch on board.

a train travels down the tracks

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is perhaps the world's most famous locomotive and another great choice for lovers of rail travel looking for a dream holiday in 2025. This is luxury train travel at its best, with fine wine and top-class cuisine served on board in meticulously restored 1920s carriages.

The train travels several routes, but a favourite is its overnight journey from Venice to Paris, connecting two of Europe's most elegant cities. Good Housekeeping is offering an exclusive luxury trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express with the company of journalist and rail enthusiast Michael Portillo, who'll join you for an evening talk and travel with you on board the train

This trip will take you between Tokyo and Osaka, showing you a side of Japan that many visitors miss along the way. There'll be stops in Takayama, Shirakawago and Kanazawa, where you'll learn about local culture and see the unique landscapes and architecture of rural Japan.

Another highlight will be a memorable day trip to see one of the majestic Mount Fuji. You'll take the super-fast bullet train to Odawara, where you'll first enjoy a boat trip on tranquil Lake Ashi before venturing up the Komagatake Ropeway up to the 5th Station and take in the breathtaking views over the Fuji Five Lakes area below.

See Japan during its colourful cherry blossom season

kyoto, japan springtime at the historic higashiyama distirct

A floral marvel that graces the landscapes for just a few weeks each spring, the Japanese cherry blossom season is a must-have on any nature lover's bucket list. Its famed beauty makes travelling to Japan in the spring months extremely popular, so its worth planning ahead and booking early to make sure you're getting a good deal.

Good Housekeeping has an excellent 17-day cruise of Japan during 2025's cherry blossom season. You won't have to worry about competing for hotel accommodation, as you'll be travelling in style on an award-winning luxury ship. The cruise begins and ends in Yokohama, with stops in Osaka, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Busan in South Korea.

Discover the beauty of Madeira's flower festival

madeira

The Portuguese island of Madeira has been nicknamed 'the floating garden of the Atlantic' and once you arrive here it won't take you long to see why. This fertile North Atlantic island is a paradise for flower enthusiasts, especially if you visit in late spring during the island's annual Flower Festival, when gardens are in full bloom and the streets come alive with parades celebrating the beauty of flowers. Good Housekeeping has a trip planned for 2025's Flower Festival. As well as enjoying the parades, performances and flower sculptures in the streets of Funchal you’ll also visit several of Madeira's best gardens including the Botanical Gardens and Palheiro Gardens.

Charles Jeffrey summed up his fashion career thus far, and nodded to where he’s heading with his spring 2025 show in the courtyard of London’s Somerset House , where the Loverboy label started a decade ago.

He offered a clean and commercial collection that distilled his aesthetic, and values: British heritage, queer club culture, inclusivity, and an appreciation for art and craft. There was even kawaii monster energy in the form of claw shoes and animal-ear beanies.

The designer offered playful interpretations of the striped shirt, as well as deconstructed and oversized outerwear, and visual illusion t-shirts. Prom dresses came with XL rosettes, and looks were finished with witty banana boots.

The biggest stars in the collection were the playful knits, which now represent a significant portion of Jeffrey’s business.

“You do all of these weird and wonderful things over 10 years, and it’s interesting how the knitwear has been the one thing that’s carried us through. So I wanted to introduce knitwear throughout the collection, into small details and huge garments,” added Jeffrey, who sold a majority stake in his label to brand accelerator Tomorrow in 2021.

The show featured a diverse cast, many of whom were from Jeffrey’s inner circle, including the photographer Jordan Hemingway; the writer Tish Weinstock; and American singer Beth Ditto , whose plus-size fashion line Jeffrey used to style.

Not only did Ditto walk in the show wearing a flowy scarlet and purple dress, she also gave a rousing performance during the finale in front of guests, including Tilda Swinton , singer Bobby Gillespie, and “Shadow and Bone” actor Jack Wolfe.

Erin O’Connor closed the show wearing a sweeping polka-dot gown and purple horns sticking out from her headpiece, shoulders, and arms.

Travel: Ohio artifacts can be seen in England

The British Museum in London displays artifacts from many cultures and many times.

Many travelers and history buffs are aware that the British Museum in London is, controversially, the repository for the ancient Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, removed from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and brought to England in the early 19th century.

But the museum also holds many other historic items from around the world, including some of the most important archeological artifacts from Ohio.

In a glass display case in the British Museum’s Room 26, visitors will find more than two dozen exquisitely fashioned pipes, as well as bowls and other objects recovered from mounds built by the prehistoric Hopewell people of the Scioto Valley.

The display, though small, is the most comprehensive in the world, and is only a small fraction of the Ohio Hopewell items the museum owns.

The pipes, carved some 2,000 years ago from various types of soft stone, known collectively as “pipestone,” were used to smoke tobacco, perhaps during ritual ceremonial observations.

Though some of the pipes are simple bowls, many are exquisitely detailed effigies of birds, frogs, beavers, turtles and other creatures from the Scioto Valley. They demonstrate a level of artistry that offers an intriguing glimpse into the culture of a people we still know relatively little about.

Most of the stone is also native to the area around modern-day Chillicothe, although a few pipes were carved from rock from as far away as Minnesota, indicating a surprising level of travel and trade at the time.

How the items made their way from the vicinity of Chillicothe to England is a fascinating tale in itself.

Although the prehistoric mounds of Ohio were objects of curiosity and speculation since the time of the earliest European trappers and traders in the area, the first real attempt at a scientific exploration of the earthworks was conducted from 1845 to 1847 by Ephraim Squire and Edwin Davis, who surveyed and excavated many of the earthworks in the vicinity of Chillicothe.

Their findings were detailed in the very first volume of the "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge," published in 1847 by a brand new scientific organization called the Smithsonian Institution.

Of course, Squire and Davis had gathered quite a significant collection of about 1,300 artifacts from the mounds and in those days, well, finders keepers.

Davis later decided to sell the artifacts, hoping to place them with the Smithsonian which, unfortunately, didn’t have the funds. And so, the Ohio Hopewell collection was purchased by the owner of a private museum in England for $10,000 and sent across the sea.

In 1931, the collection was purchased by the British Museum, which has been its home ever since.

Of course, travelers who are interested enough to stop by the British Museum to view the Hopewell collection (and a whole, whole lot of other great stuff) may also want to see some of the prehistory of England, itself. There’s no better place for that than out on the Salisbury Plain, the home of Stonehenge , as well as a large number of Bronze Age burial mounds that almost perfectly resemble the many prehistoric mounds found in Ohio.

And even though the Hopewell collection is in England, the original Hopewell mound sites are much, much closer to home.

The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe is, like Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of just 25 in the United States. The park includes the Mound City group of earthworks and several other earthworks in the Chillicothe area.

The Mound City site also offers a small visitors center and museum that tells the story — at least as much of it as we know — of the Hopewell people and their culture. The park is a can’t-miss destination for history buffs and for anyone intrigued by Ohio’s enigmatic prehistoric peoples. Just don’t expect to see a lot of original artifacts.

For more information about the British Museum’s Hopewell collection, including an interactive online walk through the museum’s Room 26, visit britishmuseum.org .

Dior's Resort 2025 Footwear Was Sturdy, Sleek - and Fit for a Warrior Queen

S cotland is even rainier than England, if that's possible, and Maria Grazia Chiuri arrived prepared for the weather. For her Resort 2025 collection, Dior's creative director of womenswear sent out a battalion of black boots, and some sturdy flat shoes, during a dramatic show in the manicured gardens of Drummond Castle in Perthshire.

Protective, performance footwear is important in a place like Scotland, where the country pursuits include fly fishing, deer stalking, hunting, hiking and golf, of course. Chiuri had all of those sports in mind when she designed the collection, and gave even the stompiest of styles a glamorous edge.

The show took place on Monday night, at twilight, in the vast, Italianate gardens below the castle, which dates to the late 15th century. Models strode across the grass wearing black boots with rounded toes over colorful, argyle above-the-knee socks.

Some boots were knee-high and adorned with leather straps, buckles, silver grommet details, and lug-soles, while others resembled waders, with cheeky garter details at the top. There were rainboots, too, some of which were worn partly unzipped.

Shoes, all of which were flat, had a similar surefooted look. One Mary Jane style had thick soles and silvery studs arranged into delicate patterns while another square-toed style resembled a ballet shoe, but with thick buckled straps across the top.

The boots and shoes were worn with sculptural minidresses, lacy gowns and draped, fringed tartan dresses, capes and skirts.

Chiuri said the collection as a whole was inspired by Mary, Queen of Scots' wardrobe, "which mixed very fragile lace with velvet," and showcased a variety of contrasting materials. "In the show we mixed together sportswear with fragile materials," she added.

All the boots and shoes were versatile, and will work just as well stomping around muddy gardens as they will striding into dinner at the castle.
