India's Unwanted Record Despite 280-Run Victory Against Bangladesh In Chennai

The win, which gave india a 1-0 lead in the two-match, series was also the cricket crazy nation's 179th in the longest format of the game..

Ravichandran Ashwin , who scored a century in the first innings, took six wickets in the second innings as India thumped Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test in Chennai on Sunday. Bangladesh resumed the day on 158-4 with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto batting with veteran Shakib Al Hasan . However, local hero Ashwin struck first to end a stubborn overnight stand of 48 by getting Shakib out for 25. The dismissal sparked a batting collapse in the morning session as Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared nine wickets between them.

The win, which gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match, series was also the cricket crazy nation's 179th in the longest format of the game. India played its first-ever Test in 1932. 

For the first time in history, the Indian cricket team has more Test wins than defeats. They have played 580 Tests so far, winning 179 and losing 178 games. Meanwhile, 222 Tests have been draws.

Among teams who have achieved the feat of registering more wins than losses, India have taken the most number of games (580) to reach the milestone for the first time.

Meanwhile, Ashwin bagged his 37th five-wicket haul, equalling the late Shane Warne . Muttiah Muralitharan remains well out in front with 67

"He's always there for us over the years. I don't know if I speak here (that) it'll be enough to cover what he does for the team. He looks like he's never out of the game," Ashwin said after the match.

India declared their second innings at 287-4 on day three after centuries from Shubman Gill , who hit an unbeaten 119, and the returning Pant, who made 109, flattened the opposition.

Gill and the left-handed Pant, who was playing his first Test since a serious car crash in December 2022, put on 167 runs for the fourth wicket.

Catching Kumble: When could Ashwin become India's highest ever Test wicket-taker?

R Ashwin put in a stellar all-round performance against Bangladesh in the Chennai Test . But as far as his bowling goes, could Ashwin overtake Anil Kumble to become India's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket?

In the first innings against Bangladesh, Ashwin walked in to bat on his home ground with India 144-6 and under the pump. From there, he put on a match-turning 199-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, scoring his sixth Test ton along the way.

While he went wicketless the first time India bowled, Ashwin showcased his bag of tricks the second time around. He took four of the first five wickets to fall, and finished with 6-88 to achieve, for the fourth time in his career, the double of a five-for and a century in the same Test.

How does Ashwin stack up against Anil Kumble?

Playing his 101st Test, Ashwin's six-for took his wickets tally to 522 in Test cricket. The only other bowler to have taken 500 Test wickets for India is former skipper Anil Kumble, who took a staggering total of 619 scalps. Could Ashwin catch Kumble? And how long might it take him to do so?

First, here is a look at their careers so far.

Ashwin and Kumble were running on similar trajectories for the first 20 or so matches of their careers. In fact, after 22 Tests each, Kumble had taken 108 wickets, and Ashwin 109. But after that point, their paths began to diverge as Ashwin pulled ahead.

Ashwin has been helped over the last decade or so by India often preparing tracks suited to spinners, whereas Kumble often played on flat wickets at home. In addition, Kumble played a good deal of Test matches overseas, something which Ashwin has not done very often.

Beyond these reasons though, the fact remains that for the majority of his career, Ashwin has been a more prolific wicket-taker than Kumble. By the mark of 50 Tests apiece, Kumble's tally was 220 wickets, and Ashwin's 279. By their 75th Tests, this gap had narrowed to 40, but still 386-346 in favour of Ashwin.

After 101 Tests, Kumble had 487 wickets. Ashwin currently has 522, at 5.17 per match. At this rate, Ashwin could go past Kumble in his 120th Test, 19 from now.

How many Tests could Ashwin play?

India have nine Tests remaining in this calendar year – one more against Bangladesh, three at home against New Zealand and five away against Australia. They will likely play the WTC final in June 2025 in England, before a five-Test series in the country.

According to the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), India will then play four more home Tests; two each against West Indies and South Africa. This makes a total of 18 Test matches until November 2025 which could be enough for Ashwin if he plays all of them.

But there are a couple of snags. If Ravindra Jadeja is available, Ashwin's opportunities outside Asia become limited. India will often play just one spinner in pace-friendly conditions, and that is usually Jadeja thanks to his superior batting. Therefore, considering just Tests in Asia means Ashwin has only seven left in the next 14 months.  

Looking past that, India play Afghanistan at home (1 Test) and Sri Lanka away (3 Tests) in mid-2026. That is another three Ashwin is likely to play. January 2027 then becomes a vital time for him, as Australia come to India for five Test matches, the last series scheduled in the FTP.

This makes a total of 16 Test matches in Asia for Ashwin to play, until the beginning of 2027. In case of injury or workload management, he may get a few overseas Tests as well. But in order to overtake Kumble, Ashwin will have to perform slightly better than his career average thus far. This should not be a problem, as his performances have remained consistent even at his age.

What are the stumbling blocks for Ashwin?

The more pertinent question is, will his body allow him to get that far? 

Ashwin has never been the most naturally fit cricketer, and has had the occasional injury. Generally, he can be relied upon to stay fit. It may also help that he does not play white-ball cricket for India. But he has just turned 38 years old. Kumble retired roughly two weeks after his 38th birthday and while it is fairly clear Ashwin will not be done that early, he will be nearing 40 by mid-2027.

As far as performance goes, it could take just about two years for Ashwin to overtake Kumble. The biggest stumbling block could be his own body, or his board, if the BCCI decide it best to close the chapter on Ashwin after the conclusion of the current World Test Championship cycle, especially in case India win the title.

For the time being, it's best not to look too far ahead. His fitness might have to be managed more carefully, but if that is done efficiently and successfully, 2027 could have a special moment in store for Ashwin.

Most Test Centuries As Wicket-Keepers For India

India’s rich history in Test cricket is adorned by some elite wicketkeeper-batters, who have blended their sharp glovework with some impactful batting performances. Some of these crucial innings have even shaped memorable Indian victories in recent memory.

Celebrating the nation’s rich lineage of legendary wicketkeeper-batters and their abilities of occupying long hours at the crease, we take a look at three stumpers who have notched up the highest number of centuries in Test cricket for Team India.

3. Wriddhiman Saha – 3 centuries (54 innings)

Bengal giant Wriddhiman Saha sporadically kept wickets for Team India during MS Dhoni’s playing career, and completely took over the role with utmost grace following the latter’s format retirement in December 2014. In the 40 Tests he played for India between February 2010 and December 2021, Saha pounded three classy centuries, including two in a winning cause.

He registered the first of those hundreds on a tough Gros Islet surface against West Indies in August 2016. Occupying over five hours at the crease, Wriddhiman Saha minted 104 runs from 227 balls and shared a match-defining 213-run stand with fellow centurion Ravichandran Ashwin.

The following year, Saha belted two hundreds in the space of a month against Bangladesh at Hyderabad and against Australia at Ranchi respectively. While the 106* he made in Hyderabad merely piled on Bangladesh’s misery in a one-off Test, his time-biding ton in Ranchi saved India from the blushes against Border-Gavaskar Trophy rivals Australia.

2. MS Dhoni – 6 centuries (144 innings)

Former Indian captain, and arguably one of world’s greatest wicketkeeper-batters , MS Dhoni logged six Test centuries in his elite 90-match career from December 2005 till December 2014. In a month after making his Test debut, the cricketer blasted 148 from just 153 balls at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium against the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Danish Kaneria and Shahid Afridi.

While Dhoni had to wait more than three years to bring up another three-figure score, he ensured to sustain his newfound purple patch by belting three centuries in the space of three months spanning two different home Test series for Team India. In November 2011, the legendary stumper tonked a six-laden 144 against West Indies to chart his fifth Test ton and his second at the Eden Gardens.

MS Dhoni seemed to have reserved his best for the twilight of his career, whipping out his magnum opus score and lone double ton by smearing 224 off 265 balls , most of it while batting with the tail, against Australia under the sweltering heat of Chennai. Remarkably, none of Dhoni’s six Test centuries resulted in an Indian defeat, with four of them resulting in emphatic victories on home conditions.

1. Rishabh Pant – 6 centuries (58 innings)

Rishabh Pant, a legend in the making, is well on his way in becoming one of the all-time greats of red-ball cricket. Having made his Test debut at a tender age of 20 on tough English surfaces, Pant’s career instantly took off after he smacked a whirlwind 114 in the final match of the tour to keep India’s chase ambition of 464 runs alive until his stay at the crease.

The unconventional stroke-maker went from strength to strength in his subsequent seasons, as he pounded his career-best score of 159* in a historic series-winning cause in Australia, and a match-winning home hundred against England on the dust bowl of Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Pant’s fighting 100* in Newlands against South Africa and 146 at Edgbaston against England in 2022 came in some of India’s hostile away tours under seemingly hopeless match situations in recent memory.

In September 2024, at the age of nearly 27, Rishabh Pant levelled up with his childhood hero MS Dhoni by hauling his sixth Test ton, achieving so in significantly lesser time with just 58 innings.
