COVID-19 Test Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at [email protected] if you cannot find an answer to your question.

There are typically three types of tests for travel;

  • Antigen test
  • PCR test (nasopharyngeal and gargle)

The PCR and Antigen tests determine if you currently carry the COVID-19 virus and, as such, are the most requested for travel. Both have a sample collection process of nasal or throat swabs.   The antigen could be referred to as rapid test, lateral flow test, rapid lateral flow test, rapid antigen test etc. It is a quick test that reveals your infection status within 10 minutes. The PCR test is also referred to as RT-PCR test, NAAT among others. The PCR test is the gold standard of COVID-19 tests and is the one to go with if you are ever unsure, as it is accepted in almost all countries. It typically takes 24 hours to receive results. The antibody test determines whether you carry the antibodies of the virus, which indicates you have had COVID-19 in the past. Specimen sample is collected by drawing blood. Mainland China currently requires this test (among others) for entry.

We service the Greater Vancouver area

  • Covid-19 RT-PCR Test - $199
  • Covid-19 Antigen Test - $90   (CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE)
  • Japanese Travel Certificate + PCR Test - $249
  • Covid-19 Gargle (Saliva) PCR Test - $229
  • MobilePCR Test (We come to you)-  $399

***Click HERE to book your appointment or call (236) 476-3223 ***

The type of test depends on the entry requirements set by the destination country. Therefore, it is advisable to be familiar with their entry requirements, including their required testing window, typically 72HRS before departure. You might also want to check with the airline you are flying with for their flight boarding requirements.

Click below to find your destination's requirements.

***Be sure to check the date the information was last updated***

The embassy website of your destination country is always a great place to start your search. THIS tool is helpful to search for the entry requirements for most countries.  Remember that the rules are constantly changing, so it is important to check the last time whatever resource you are reading from was updated.

Our PCR samples are tested through LifeLab's accredited laboratories.

You can book your appointment HERE . Check for availability and pick a time that works with your schedule. Once you have booked an appointment, you should receive an email or text message confirming your appointment. You will get a second email with a link to fill an intake form. Please fill this before your appointment as it will help expedite the testing process. If you have issues booking online, please call us at (236) 476-3223 or send an email to [email protected]

We prefer you to book beforehand so that we can be prepared for your arrival. However, we accept emergencies and last-minute cases but keep in mind you might have to wait for us to get to you. You can also call us on (236) 476-3223 to give us a heads up.

Most countries require a test to be completed 72 hours before departure . However, we have found the sweet spot is the 48-hour mark . At 48 hours,  you give yourself a  buffer in case of delayed flights and allow enough time for results to be released. This is more relevant to the PCR test as the Antigen test is instant.

If you test positive, you will be advised to self-isolate and follow the procedures set by the BCCDC .

LifeLabs is responsible for analyzing the  COVID-19 samples and reporting the test results to Amani Travel Health Clinic. If  LifeLabs is overwhelmed with demand, your test result may be delayed.

Find a travel health clinic

It is recommended that you contact a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic, preferably six weeks before you travel.

Travel health services are available in most communities or through your family doctor. One way to find a health care site that provides travel health services is through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s list of designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres.

Heading on a trip to a country that you've never visited before?

A travel vaccination clinic should be among the first places you visit after you've booked tickets -- but it might be an even better idea to head to one before buying them.

Travel Medicine & Vaccination Centre Nurse Director Prab Cockar says some people return from trips with horror stories about getting sick overseas because they weren't aware of viruses and bacterial infections they could pick up while they were away.

Travellers' vaccinations not covered by MSP in B.C.

The B.C. government covers the cost of some vaccinations, such as ones for COVID-19 and influenza, for people who are enrolled in the  Medical Services Plan (MSP) for British Columbia . A prescription is not needed for these vaccines.

But people who receive vaccinations only for travel are not eligible for coverage under the provincial plan.

A visit to the clinic can be a "one-stop-shop" for potential travellers, Cockar told V.I.A. When they book a consultation, a health care professional will break down all of the health risks associated with travelling to their destination, including ones that can be prevented with immunization or treated by prescription and ones that cannot, and even what to consider about drinking local water and eating food.

Since travel resumed following the pandemic, the clinic has seen a steady increase in appointments for travel-related vaccinations. However, there are several safety factors to consider, such as a client's age and medical history, as well as the unique destination they plan to visit.

What to expect at the travel vaccine clinic

"Our consultants will review [the patient's] medical history, what vaccines they had as kids and then we discuss where they are travelling. We look at the full itinerary and search the place and the time of year," she said.

The clinic always recommends purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance plan that includes robust medical coverage for emergencies.

Immediately following the consultation, the patient can get vaccinated in the clinic and is given a prescription to pick up medication at their local pharmacy; they don't need to return for a follow-up visit.

The entire visit, including the consultation and vaccines, generally costs an average of $60, Cockar explained.

What kinds of vaccines do the clinics offer?

Some vaccines they routinely administer are for viruses like Hepatitis A and B -- which are recommended worldwide -- and ones that may be more specific to exotic destinations, such as a Typhoid fever shot for travel to South East Asia.

They also administer non-travel vaccines , such as ones that prevent HPV, Influenza, Shingle, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis/Whooping Cough, and more.

For diseases that can't be prevented by vaccines or medication, such as dengue fever, the clinic will detail the steps necessary to prevent an infection. Since it is a mosquito-borne illness found mostly in tropical and sub-tropical climates, the best way to prevent getting sick is by covering up, such as wearing protective clothing and sleeping in a mosquito net. People should also use a mosquito repellent, such as DEET, to keep the harmful pests off of them.

While between 100 and 400 million people are infected with the dengue virus annually, many cases cause asymptomatic or mild illness. However, a severe dengue infection can cause severe illness and even death . Except for pain management, there is no treatment for the virus, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Some destinations should be avoided due to health risks

Knowing what destinations put you at greater risk for contracting particular viruses, as well as what resources may be available to you, may determine whether or not you want to visit a particular destination. For example, women who plan on becoming pregnant may want to avoid travelling to countries where it is possible to contract the Zika virus, which also does not have a vaccine.

While the Zika virus doesn't often cause severe illness in adults, pregnant women who get infected with the virus may give birth to a baby born with "microcephaly and other congenital malformations as well as preterm birth and miscarriage," says the WHO. Cases of the virus have occurred on many continents, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific, but some individual destinations may carry a greater risk.

The Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)  Travel Clinic/Vaccination Clinic also provides "travel prescriptions, health advice, and vaccine recommendations based on an individual’s medical history and travel itinerary."

The coastal health authority says it is vital for people to get the appropriate vaccines before they travel outside of Canada.

RT-PCR/NAAT Testing

Nucleic Acid Amplification test (NAAT or PCR test) detects RNA specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 infection, after RNA has been extracted from a specimen and tested in a laboratory. This test has a high sensitivity and detects the virus when the virus is present. It is the gold standard of COVID-19 testing. A positive test result indicates a person likely has an active infection and can give the virus to others. The RT-PCR/NAAT test does not confirm if a client has COVID-19 antibodies (a history of COVID-19 disease in the past).

A registered nurse obtains a sample from both nostrils using a swab.  It is a painless and quick procedure.  The sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis.

We offer SAME day or NEXT day RT-PCR test results. We will send your lab report and your health certificate as soon as it is available.

Rapid Antigen testing

The testing for COVID‐19 with a rapid antigen device requires the health professional to collect mucus from the front of the nasal passageway with a nasal swab. The swab is gently turned inside the front of the nasal passage to collect mucus from this area of the nose, where the virus is often present if the person is infected with the virus.

The result is obtained in approximately 15-20 minutes.

Individuals who test positive must self-isolate and follow the BC Ministry of Health procedure for individuals who test positive for COVID-19. We will email you information about how to proceed.
