What it's like to visit Knowsley Safari Park during a pandemic

The baboons in the monkey enclosure do not respect social distancing as they leap on your car

It's late summer, the temperature's around 30C with high humidity and the kids are bored rigid after five months off school being 'home-schooled.'

Trying to find somewhere to take them while maintaining social distancing can be a little bit of a challenge.

But Knowsley Safari Park offers the perfect solution.

You don't even have to get out of your car and see another human being if don't you want to - like us.

Located just off the M57, the safari park's about a 45-minute drive from Greater Manchester.

My daughter and niece, aged 14 and 13 respectively, may be a little on the old side for a safari park and the sticker book they give you at the entrance kiosk.

But it was good to see them relaxing and enjoying the animals after being cooped at home, themselves, for so long. They could be kids again.

Social distancing in a safari park is a cinch. Mostly the resident animals do stay two-metres from your car. And if they get too near, you just drive slowly and don't panic, or merely pause to let them past.

No-one gets out of their cars. They are not allowed to - it would be too dangerous.

So it's no surprise that a recent poll of parents voted it one of the best places in the region to visit during the pandemic.

Set in five miles of rolling countryside that's green and lush at this time of year, Knowsley Safari Park has been a firm favourite with my family since my children were little.

And I dimly remember a trip there in the 1970s when I was a tiny kid.

An incident a few years back in the monkey enclosure where I tried to get a baboon off our car by squirting a bottle of water at it through the window is still remembered - and talked about by my kids. Do not do this.

You are not supposed to open your window or door in the monkey enclosure but it was having a right old go at the windscreen wipers and the part where the screen wash comes out.

knowsley safari park monkey bus

Back then, one of the baboons yanked the bottle out of my my hands and made me jump. Much laughter followed.

This time I was determined not to repeat the stupid past mistake, and luckily, it was a rather less embarrassing time.

My daughter and niece referred to the Car Share episode where Peter Kay inadvertently brings home a monkey from Knowsley that accidentally gets into his car.

'That won't happen,' I told them. 'Look, there's a ranger at the exit to check you've got no baboons on your roof or in your car.'

While I would have happily taken the car-friendly route and watched other folk get their cars trashed, there was no way this was negotiable with my daughter and niece who were adamant. We were going in.

knowsley safari park monkey bus

I was more hopeful that we'd be ok this time round. For one, the high temperature seemed to make them (the monkeys, not the children) seem a little less energetic than usual.

All the baboons seemed to be gathering at a muddy pond to cool off. It was funny watching them play from a distance.

We watched as a car was making its way to the exit with a baboon riding regally on top of the roof. It jumped off moments before the exit under the watchful gaze of a ranger.

'Great,' I thought to myself. 'They won't bother us. It's too hot.'

knowsley safari park monkey bus

A grey van in front of us had a few monkeys bouncing on its roof and the girls began to giggle and point at their antics as they jumped around. 'Slow down', the girls implored me as I attempted to subtly drive past the animals.

'No chance,' I muttered, reluctantly killing the engine as baboons raced up and down the van's roof right in front of us.

I pointed to the roof as I eventually overtook the van and the passenger nodded to say she knew.

A silver car ahead seemed to have some strange magnetic draw to the animals who enthusiastically piled onto it.

knowsley safari park monkey bus

The rear end looked quite battered by the time they were exiting the enclosure some time later.

There was a sudden loud shriek at the distinctive loud thwack of a baboon's bottom landing on the car roof startled us into loud nervous screeches and laughter.

It slid down the windscreen with its muddy backside using the glass as a makeshift slide.

A pal appeared out of nowhere.

Thunk! Another of its mates has landed on the car.

I feared for the car's windscreen wipers - or worst still the wing mirrors. He or she made a half-hearted attempt to see if the wing mirror was loose before jumping off to find the next vehicle.

knowsley safari park monkey bus

There was a recent story about the baboons somehow getting hold of screwdrivers or even a chainsaw to attack vehicles in the enclosure. But, thankfully, it appears to be an urban myth .

Be careful of baboons on the ground. We saw a mother cradling her young. It was very sweet and memorable leading to a chorus of 'awws' from the girls and a the click of camera phones.

There are also a lot of rhinos and a lion enclosure, where the lions were taking a well-earned snooze in the heat.

You can beep your horn to attract attention if you get into difficulties in the lion enclosure. We saw at least two rangers on duty - one with a van - to ensure things were running smoothly with the big cats.

At one point there was a long line of traffic as a rhino was crossing from one side of the track to the other, ambling across the track at a snail's speed. It was great to see such a noble animal at such close quarters.

knowsley safari park monkey bus

Knowsley Safari Park is huge. The drive is about five miles long and you're limited to 15 mph throughout your journey, so you can take your time.

At this time of year, there will be a fair few cars ahead of you taking in all the wildlife. There are ostriches and camels an array of other large animals co-existing happily such as zebras and majestic bison. There are endangered white rhinos.

There are other attractions - such as a funfair - and a walking safari, where you can see the tigers, but we stuck to our car during the visit.

There is the Oasis restaurant which is open with extra restrictions - hand sanitising and socially-distanced tables. And there's a deli and coffee house, too, and outdoor barbecue.

And you can't just turn up. It's essential to pre-book online as spaces are limited.

No visit is complete without a trip through the monkey enclosure. I have the mud still on my car to remind me of the fun we had.

Knowsley Safari Park Review (Beware The Baboons!)

knowsley safari park monkey bus

We were very lucky on our recent family weekend break  to Liverpool to be invited to Knowsley Safari for a day out. None of us had been to Knowsley Safari Park before, so this was an amazing new experience for us to share together.  Daddy didn’t even realise that safari parks even existed in this country so it really was an eye opener for him.

We arrived at the park when it opened and were given our arrangements for the day and the time we had to join the Knowsley Safari Baboon Bus by the meet and greet staff.  As we weren’t going to be joining the bus until 12pm, we decided we would drive around Knowsley Safari first to find out what it was like.  I’m so glad we did, as being one of the first cars around the park was a real advantage.

Meet The Lions

If you are planning a visit to Knowsley Safari Park I really would urge you to get there as soon as the gates open and head straight to the safari.  The benefit of doing this is you get to see the lions right up close and personal, so to speak.

Lions at Knowsley Safari Park

Lots To See

Around the park there are so many animals to see that to make the most of your visit we would recommend going around twice at least.  They have a vast collection of all different kinds of animals from zebras, giraffes , peacocks, elephants and rhinoceroses.  The park contains around 700 species of animal all together over 550 acres of safari park and I’m pretty sure we saw nearly all of them.

Indie seemed to enjoy the sea lions the most, and the fact she could see them from under the water really added to her experience.  I lost count of the times she went up and down the steps to see them from all the different angles  she could in the pool.

Sea Lions At Knowsley Safari

Beware the Baboons

Knowsley Safari Park has a a very large collection of Baboons in residence.  When we drove round the park ourselves we decided to take the Baboon safe route.  We valued our windscreen wipers, especially as we were going to be driving 2 hours back to Nottingham after the weekend and we know baboons aren’t shy about pulling things off cars.  We knew we would get to see them when we caught the baboon bus later.

These cheeky primates have quite a reputation you see.  They are famous for stealing windscreen wipers, England flags, number plates and pretty much anything they can pull off a car.  They are also known for using the odd moving vehicle as a toilet.  We saw this in progress, so I can completely vouch for it.

They are amazing creatures, but when they see a car they think it’s playtime.  When we were about to enter their enclosure on the Baboon bus, we saw a women get out of her car, and stick her windscreen wipers down with masking tape.  Now, you remember those lions I mentioned at the beginning of the post?  Firstly, it really isn’t a good idea to get out of your car whilst at the safari, and secondly masking tape really isn’t going to make a jot of difference.

baboons at knowsley safari park

It’s definitely worth taking the Baboon bus at Knowsley Safari Park for lots of reasons.  The guide gave us lots of interesting facts about all the animals that live at Knowsley Safari, which we all really enjoyed.  You can use the guide your given on entry too, but I must say I prefer someone to point things out and talk to you, they often have stories you don’t find in the tour guide.

The main reason though is that the Baboon bus is a great way to see the Baboons and keep your car in one piece.  There are ropes hanging from the bus that the Baboons catch and climb up, but they aren’t shy about using the windscreen wipers either.

This was such a fun experience, and our 3 year old thought it was very amusing watching the baboons jump onto the bus.  She thought it was even more amusing when one wee’d down the windscreen.  These baboons know no shame.  I really can’t recommend the Baboon bus enough.

We Met Ben & Holly Too

During our visit, Ben & Holly were visiting Knowsley Safari too.  They were having meet and greets with their fans through out the day.  Now, we couldn’t miss this as Indie loves the show.  She kept reminding us that she’d seen them at the theatre , and was very excited to meet the in person.  Just look at this happy little face…

Recommendation

We had an amazing visit to Knowsley Safari and would recommend a visit for anyone coming to Liverpool.  It really does have something for everyone.  The have a play park for the children to enjoy, restaurants and picnic areas too.

They have a really flexible pricing structure so that you can enjoy the park in the best way that suits you.  Entry starts at just £17.50 and under 3’s are free.  Baboon Bus tickets are £5.50 per person.  It really is great value for money.

We were provided with complimentary tickets to Knowsley Safari Park in exchange for this post, but all thoughts and opinions are our own.

We’ve been a couple of times. Last time was last Xmas. It was our 3yr old 1st time, she liked it until we went to see the lions and monkeys, we went. All she can remember is one of them jumping up at our door and opening our side door.

Oops. They really are cheeky monkey’s aren’t they. Did you have the door locked? They are pretty strong aren’t they

We will next time!! As it opened slightly.

That must have been pretty scary. I hope it doesn’t put you off going. We really had a great day. The Baboon bus is a great way to keep your car in tact 🙂

this looks so fun!! so you can drive around the park on your own? the lions don’t damage the cars?

Yep, you can drive around on your own. There are rangers around making sure people don’t do anything silly like open car windows for photo’s. It’s not the lions you have to worry about, it’s the baboons!

It looks such an amazing place to visit! It must be so great to get so close to the animals! It sounds like you had a lot of fun! Great photos x

Thanks Kim, it was amazing. We really enjoyed. It was a much better experience than going to a zoo x

I can vouch for the Baboons liking number plates, we had ours snatched off a few years ago, not that we minded as the children loved every minute of it, but if you are worried about losing something from your car the Baboon bus sounds ideal!

We went in early like you and saw the lions close up, a brilliant if slightly nerve wracking experience!

What a great price for such a good day out. It is wonderful being able to be so close to such magnificent creatures. And to meet Ben and Holly too. I’m glad you all enjoyed it.

Oh wow this place looks amazing!! I am going to have to take Boo – she loves monkeys at the minute. And I am really pleasantly surprised by the prices too!

I love Safari parks; it might be the only place I will get to see some of the wild animals.

We are to go next week, and cannot wait! It looks absolutely brilliant x

[…] really enjoys watching Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom.  We’ve met Ben & Holly at Knowsley Safari Park which was a big moment for her, and we’ve even been to see them in their live tour at the […]

Knowsley Safari Park: A Journey Into the Wild

by Anoop Singh | Nov 25, 2021 | Explore St Helens

Do you love exploring safari parks? Knowsley Safari Park offers an unforgettable day out for all ages. As Liverpool’s wildest adventure, it provides thrilling excitement with the opportunity to see beautiful and exotic animals from the comfort of your own car. The stunning 550-acre safari drive promises a thrilling experience, allowing you to get up close and personal with an array of incredible wildlife.

A trip to the park is a must to enjoy the best outdoor time with your family and friends. Hidden behind a very traditional scene of Britishness with woodland, old stone walls and fields, this special place is home to over 500 majestic creatures including lions, tigers, elephants, meerkats, giraffes and rhinos. A drive through lion enclosure is a real highlight of the safari drive while for some baboons, which are fans of exploring the vehicles that enter their enclosure. Whether you get up close on the Baboon Bus or take the car-friendly route, there is plenty of great monkey madness; the boisterous baboons that have become Knowsley’s trademark.

The Foot Safari experience includes sea lion displays and plays areas, meerkats, and giraffes. Get acquainted with the family of meerkats, and keep an eye out for our cutest family, the South American bush dogs. You also get to experience the newly opened Amur Tiger Trail. Step into the tiger’s territory as you make your way into the forest. Keep your eyes peeled for tigers because they might have already spotted you. A thrilling experience you can always brag about among your friends!

The park also offers a chance to see an array of native British wildlife. You can spot the waterfowl nesting around the park’s beautiful Mizzy Lake or watch kestrels and buzzards in the woodland along with stoats, weasels and squirrels. Families can enjoy the amusement rides and explore the play areas to keep their little ones entertained all day long.  Overall, Knowsley Safari Park is truly Merseyside’s premier leisure attraction to add to your travel bucket list of 2022.

You can include Lakeside Hotel in your adventure plan as we are just a 10-minute drive away from Knowsley Park.
