Saint Martin Bangladesh: How To Reach, Best Time, Tips.

Fish Coocking Saint martin

Saint Martin Bangladesh, in the Chittagong Division, is the only coral island of the country.  The local people call this tiny island “NarikelZinjira” meaning coconut island in their native language because of the abundant coconut growing here. The island is located in the southernmost part of mainland just at the river mouth of Naf river.

This landmark demarcates as the international borderline between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Somebody named it “Daruchini Dwip” for the surrounding naturally beautiful scenery and crystal clear blue water of the Bay of Bengal.Unlike the long sandy beach of Cox’s Bazar , you can walk around this entire small island.

Usually, tourists take off for serene beach of Saint Martin island Bangladesh to refresh themselves after merriment at Cox’s Bazar. I wanted to explore this untouched territory when I was there. So, one fine morning we got on a bus and headed for Saint Martin island Bangladesh.

Best Time To Visit Saint Martin Island :

The weather forecast is a must before visiting the island especially during the tourist off-season from March to July. Cyclone can frequently strike during this period. In the cyclone of 1991, this place was extremely damaged but has been totally recovered. In 2014, fortunately, it was completely untouched by the Tsunami.

The island gets its best weather from November to February. So, these are the main tourist season with the best weather conditions. The island becomes full of life from 10 a.m. just as the ferries dock full of tourists. They move about across this place till 3 p.m. This is the time for the ferries to leave this place.

How Saint Martin Island Bangladesh Become Discovered?

Around 250 years ago, first Arabian sailors settled down on this island and named it Zajira. It was during the reign of the British was it named Saint Martin.  There was the first Anglo-Burmese War from 1824 till 1826 during which period there was major conflict regarding the ownership of this place between the British and the Burmese empires.

This Marine Paradise is located northeast of Bay of Bengal. From Cox’s Bazar- Teknaf point it is 9 km south and from the northwest coast of Myanmar 8 km west.In a simple word, the island’s location is on the getaway in Bangladesh. The Island has an extension named “Chera Dwip.”

It is the surrounding coral reef off the island. The meaning of “Chera” is “separation” as it does from the main island during tide. Roughly 7500 inhabitants of this island mainly live on fishing. Fishers from adjacent areas bring fishes to sale on the temporary wholesale market of the island during October to April.

Besides tourism services, they collect and dry algae from sea rock to sale to Myanmar where people eat this. Their staple foods are rice and coconuts. It was not before 2004 that Bangladeshi residents were allowed to visit this island.

Non-resident Bangladeshi and foreigners could only visit the island from 1989-2004. The island has no supply of electricity from the national grid, no need to worry hotels run on generators.

Top 10 Things To Do In Saint Martin Island Bangladesh.

1. Explore Sandy Beach

Though there are some developments are on their way to meet the full standard as a tourist spot, nothing compares to the beauty of the beach.  As if it compensates for all the lacking there is. The blue water surrounding the sandy beach with lines of coconut trees offering fresh coconut drinks, fresh live seafood- all beckoning to explore this unchartered territory.

Whoever comes here for a short visit ends up repenting not staying for long like overnight and turn this unforgettable journey into a memorable one.Though the area of the island stretches 8 square kilometers, it shrinks into only 5 square kilometers during high tide.

So, yes, it is completely possible to trod around the whole island. Tourists bored with their hectic daily routine looking for quick but refreshing change must visit this island of sun, sea and coconut trees.

2. Scuba Diving

It looks as if the island has become alive as the tourist season hits in. All the beach sports, beach parties, and a bonfire lit up the evening sky during this particular time of year. You can go for scuba diving, hire an engine or speed boat and go for a tour around the island.

It may cost around BDT 2000 for dive, and you can rent snorkel gears for another BDT 500. Boats can be hired for a fee of BDT 600-800.

If you are interested, do get down to check out the Coast Guard station not that there is any security issue for the visitors. You can communicate easily with others through the mobile phone network. Also, go online with wireless devices and connect to the world though there are no land phones available on the island.

3. Chera Dwip

As the name implies this adjacent part of the island gets separated from the mainland during tide. It is the coral island which is reachable either by foot or by getting on a boat. It can be a tourist boat or a motor boat. To hire an engine boat, you need to pay around 150-200 BDT, and for a speedboat, the fare rises to about 1200-1500 BDT if you are not willing to walk.

The mainland is made up of both live and dead forms of different species of corals. There is little greenery on Chera Dwip. Though is no permanent residents on the island, there are temporary shops which serve fried fish and coconut water for the tourists. So, visitors can start early to visit the island and come back by evening.

4. Enjoy Local Fresh Sea Food

Compared to Cox’s Bazar food is relatively costly here because the inhabitants acquire all major livelihood goods are required from the mainland. Food stalls are everywhere. Breakfast comprising of egg omelet, vegetable curry along with parathas cost only BDT 15.

You can get rice, daal (lentil) and different fish with vegetables day and night. A cup of tea costs only BDT 5.Furthermore, all the restaurants in hotels offer more or less similar menu in better quality at an obviously better price.

Chickens, lobsters, and crabs are in abundant in the hotels. One thing is if you like dried fish better to get pricey ones from here as they are fresher than those available at Cox’s Bazar beach area.

You can drink plenty of fresh coconut water at a very reasonable rate. But if you want something hard to drink you can also get hold of this at some particular hotels.

One restaurant needs to be mentioned in particular for its location as well as the menu. The Narikel Zinjira Restaurant is just at the forefront of the island.

You get the ship, and there it is. They have Bar-B-Q, a buffet of Bangla, Indian and Chinese cuisine. They are an expert group of diners with the ability to serve around 200 guests at a time.

It is advisable to leave the worrying in the hand of these experts while you enjoy your journey wholeheartedly. So, plan the journey, accommodation, foods and so on with an experienced tour operator and go on to Saint Martin Island during

November to February.Be respectful to the people and the place. Noteworthy, it may be there are few species of sea turtles (for example Green and Olive Ridley turtles) that are in danger of extinction that nest on this island. There is also some corals only particular to the coconut island. The sea turtle conservation project is going on, and if you visit the island during the hatching season, you may come to their nesting ground.

They are sometimes taken for food while still nestling, and corals are isolated to be sold. The Coastal View of Saint Martin

Saint Martin Bangladesh: A Little Heaven

  • December 6, 2022

MD. Mohaiminul Haque

Introduction.

Saint Martin Island, locally known as Narikel Jinjira, is the only coral island in Bangladesh. It is the southernmost union of Bangladesh situated in 120 km away from the Cox’s Bazar city, and 9 km or 5 nautical miles from Teknaf coastline.

Narikel Jinjira means the chain of coconuts. The name results from this island producing coconuts in a huge number. The island is also known as the Daruchini Dwip (Cinnamon Island) because local claims, once an Arabian ship, crashed with a large rock and spread cinnamons all around the island.

A beach view of Saint Martin island.

Saint Martin’s is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bangladesh. But the government restricted its public access to the season only. You can only go there by ship from November to March depending on the season. Rest of the year, you’ll have to go by trawler or speedboat which is risky.

Enough of introduction. Let’s get you through the amazing places of this small but picturesque island. Here are the top 8 places you should never miss in Saint Martin:

North Beach:

North Beach is the polar beach on Saint Martin’s Island. When you leave the ship at jetty and start walking towards the island, the beach on your right-hand side is the North beach (Not the immediate one with the Jetty). Most of the tourists who return to Cox’s Bazar on the same day go to this beach. This beach produces the most powerful waves during high tide.

This is also the riskiest beach if you are considering getting wet. There is a rip current zone around the corner, and you will see red flags and danger signs nearby. Most of the people gather here when they first arrive on the island.

West Beach of Saint Martin Bangladesh:

West Beach, as the name says, is in the west part of the island. This is also one of the most popular spots on the island. Tourists usually gather here in the afternoon. One reason for this beach being so popular is the beach market near it. This is the only beach on the island with a beach market.

Besides, there are food stalls to eat and some small carts where you can buy local foods and hand-crafted items and Burmese products. This is ideal for families and groups who want to sit and relax beside the beach and may as well eat something.

Somudro Bilash Cottage:

Somudro Bilash is a rest house owned by deceased fiction writer and director Dr. Humayun Ahmed. It is by far the costliest cottage on the island. The cottage is popular because Humayun Ahmed directed a movie on the island named “Daruchini Dwip” and hosted the actors and the crew here.

Almost every Bangladeshi tourist goes there to get a peek at this famous cottage. Although you can’t enter the cottage without boarding there, you can still take pictures outside the gate. This Cottage made the west beach so popular.

Saint Martin’s Island campsite:

You might have already understood where I am going with this. This place is heaven for camping lovers. There are two camping sites in Saint Martin’s Island. This one and the Hindol Campsite on the East beach. This campsite is on the west beach. It is near the beach and ideal for camping as it is one of the quietest zones of the island.

Agontuk Beach:

Agontuk is a Bangla word which means stranger. Well, the beach justifies its name. It is the beach that provides the best views on the whole island, but almost no one knows the spot except passionate travelers like you who research well before the trip.

This beach is in the west beach, but it is closer to the south vicinity. This is a sandy beach and probably the beach with most corals remaining. It will be hard for you to go there on foot. So, maybe hire a rickshaw or bike to get there.

Cinnamon Lake:

Cinnamon lake is very close to Agontuk beach. It is the largest surface level source of fresh water on the island. Although there is nothing special about this lake, you can pay a visit if you want to see the largest source of fresh water in this remote island.

Pebble Stone Zone:

This is on the Southwest corner of the island. Here you will find the largest corals and stones on the entire island. Besides, there is a Keura (A local tree) bush which gives a photogenic vibe.

Chera Dwip:

The word Chera means torn. As the name suggests, people call it Chera Dwip because a part of the island stays underwater throughout the larger part of the day. You can go there on foot during the low tide. This is by far the most popular tourist attraction in the island as it holds the southernmost corner of Bangladesh known as “The Final Frontier of Bangladesh.”

What makes this disconnected part of the island more special is the fact that only one lives here, alone and without electricity. They make dry fish on the island and sell them on the main market in Saint Martin’s Island. They also make a little shed for tourists and sell lunch to earn some money during the tour season.

chera dwip-saint martin bangladesh

Into the Saint Martin Island, Bangladesh

You can go to Chera Dwip by three methods, by boat, by bike or bicycle or on foot. The boat will take you to the Chera Dwip Boat Ghat where you will get off from the boat and walk on water a little to get to the island. I recommend going there by boat if you are with family or have female group members. If you are in your youth and want to explore the whole island, you should go on cycle or on foot.

Now, one thing you should keep in mind is riding a bike or bicycle on the shore is an extremely difficult job. If you are not used to riding bike on rural roads, you might get sick during the trip. same goes for walking. If you are a regular walker, I would suggest you drop the idea as it is a very long route.

I suggest you buy a two-liter water bottle as you will need it in the sun. If you don’t, you will have to buy it for a price twice as much. Applying sunscreen is a must and wear a cap if you can.

How to go to Saint Martin Island , Bangladesh

There are three ways you can go to Saint Martin Island, Bangladesh. One is through Teknaf and the rest two are Cox’s bazar and Chittagong. But, in my opinion, the Teknaf to Saint Martin route is the one thing that makes the trip so pleasant. You will see hills and forest as you will go through the narrow lane of Naf River between Bangladesh and Myanmar. This was for people who want to enjoy the journey to the fullest.

From Dhaka:

If you are in Dhaka, then you will find a lot of bus operators operating in Dhaka to Teknaf. We don’t promote any company so we are not naming any bus operators but if you have any queries, please contact us and we will get back to you soon.

After the bus drops you at Cox’s Bazar bus stop, go to the BIWTA ghat to get onboard. You will have to book your tickets beforehand to go from Cox’s Bazar. It is usually a 6-hour trip from Cox’s Bazar.

You can also go directly to Takenaf and then board your ship. The bus of this route usually departs from Arambagh, Dhaka. The bus will directly drop you on the jetty ghat and from there you can board your ship.

From Chittagong:

There are three ways to go to Saint Martin’s Island from Chittagong. You can go directly from Chittagong, or you can go to Takenaf and then go to Saint Martin. The ship from Chittagong boards only once a week, so you must book tickets beforehand. You will have to go to Patenga water bus terminal to get on the ship. The process of going from Cox’s Bazaar or Takenaf is the same as Dhaka.

Where to stay

You don’t have to worry about staying in Saint Martin as it has hundreds of resorts and cottages. Here you will find basic cottages as well as three-star hotels. We won’t name any hotels, but you can find them yourself on hotel booking sites.

Most of the restaurants on this island are not up to the standards as certified chef stops don’t want to come here. But there are some good restaurants who serve quality food. Ask your hotel owner and he will take you to the good ones.

What to expect

As this is a remote island, transportation is not that good. Only one ship comes a week to deliver consumer products and other necessary documents. As a result, their products’ sourcing cost increases by a great margin. Subsequently, you will have to pay an added price to balance the scale. So, don’t be upset if the products in Saint Martin cost a little more than the mainland.

Also, you should always keep your sunscreen on while roaming outside. Always wear a cap and keep a pair of glasses. Keep necessary medicines close and buy a mosquito repellent. Try to eat from restaurants that maintain hygiene properly and keep the tourist polices’ contact number in your phonebook in case of any unexpected event.

NB: Please throw waste in the bin wherever you go and help keeping the environment clean.

A Walk in the World

Travel Guide to Saint Martin in Bangladesh

Located to the southern part of Bangladesh, Saint Martin’s Island is a beautiful coral island. To many, Saint Martin’s is the most beautiful place in Bangladesh. We have drafted a travel guide to Saint Martin which includes the activities you can do, amazing photos of the island, and recommended hotels.

Blue water, golden beaches fringed with coconut palms, abundant sunshine, and a tiny insignificant dot on the map – that’s, Saint Martin in Bangladesh for you. This is the most beautiful island in Bangladesh, hands down. This is one of the most beautiful places in Bangladesh, too. When you have 160 million people packed in an area equal to Illinois, you cannot expect tranquility in a beautiful place. Saint Martin’s is a rare exception to that because of its remote location. It’s difficult to go there, but once you will be there, you won’t want to leave. This is your ultimate travel guide to Saint Martin in Bangladesh.

Table of Contents

Small Jetty of St Martin Island

Jetty in Saint Martin's Island in Bangladesh

The only way of reaching Saint Martin’s island is via ship. Our ship arrived there from Teknaf before noon (See below for detailed information). The jetty in Saint Martin’s is unremarkable. Several small to medium passenger vessels were docked there. There was a small bridge made of concrete connecting the island. We took our belongings from the ship and walked less than 50 meters, where a lot of vehicles were waiting to take the tourists to their hotel.

Boats docked in Saint Martin's Island

Apart from ships, there were many boats resting in the sea. Those were mostly fishing boats. If you are an adventure seeker, you can also take this kind of boat for arriving in Saint Martin’s. I know many people who did this, but you need a lot of guts for taking this journey in the rough sea.

The Jetty to our Hotel

Vehicle in Saint Martin's Island

We took a vehicle which is known as a “van”. It’s a three-wheeler human hauler. 4 persons can sit at the back, which has a shade. We did not have enough space to carry our luggage there, we somehow managed it.

Although, the island is in the remotest place of Bangladesh; the infrastructure is fairly good. The placard you can see is the Government’s messages to the villagers like “Utilise the expertise of women during harvesting crops”.

I was looking around from the van. I could see a cellular network tower. Not long before, there was no mobile network connectivity in Saint Martin’s. It was customary to tell people before going to Saint Martin’s island (with a bit of pride) – “I am going outside of mobile network coverage”. Those days are gone!

The Vast Ocean

View of Saint Martin's from Hotel

This is a small island. It took less than 10 minutes to arrive at my hotel. The hotel was right beside the sea. I got tired after a long journey; I took my shower and ate my lunch and went out. The vast open Bay of Bengal was right in front of me. I could see nothing on the horizon other than two fisherman’s boats. The soothing wind, the smell of the sea, and soft light made me asleep on a couch on the beach.

Evening Market

Shop in Saint Martin's Island

As the sun became less intense, temporary shops opened their window. They were selling biscuits, chips, hats (for protection from the sun), and some toys for the kids. I rented a bicycle to roam around. It was difficult to go far – maybe because of the poor condition of the cycle, or maybe because of my lack of stamina for riding on the sand. I will definitely point the finger to the excuse number one!

The Beautiful Sunset

Sunset in Saint Martin's Island

Maybe I dozed off for an hour. The surroundings were so serene; I did not want to go anywhere else. Bangladesh is a Muslim country and you won’t find alcohol here. However, on Saint Martin’s Island, you have something better. You can buy big coconuts full of water. These coconuts are grown on the island. I took one, and it was refreshing. I was enjoying the tranquility, looking at the horizon to see the sun melted in the ocean like chocolate in my mouth.

Fish Fiesta

Fish in Saint Martin's Island

When the sun sets, and darkness looms, you can hear the roar of the sea. The best thing to do during that time is to eat seafood. You usually won’t need to go far from your hotel. These are some temporary boutique restaurants serving fresh seafood. You won’t find a cozy or air-conditioned environment there. However, there are tables and chairs on the beach and you can enjoy deliciously fried fishes listening to the songs of the sea pouring your feet under the sand.

Exploring Saint Martin’s Island

Beach in Saint Martin's Island in Bangladesh

As soon as I woke up the next morning, I rushed to the beach. There is no motor vehicle on the island, not even a motorbike. It’s a small island, only 8 square kilometres long. I wanted to circumnavigate it on foot. So, I started my exploration. It was a bright and sunny day in December. The temperature was just perfect. The golden sandy beach was untouched. There were no restaurants or establishments of any sort. The island was dotted with coconut trees.

Saint Martin's Island in Bangladesh

If you wonder, just behind those dotted coconut trees are hotels or houses for locals. If you look at the photo above carefully, you can see packets of sands placed near the trees. It is an effort to make a dam. The distance between those houses and the ocean is so small, the water can enter the house if the weather is not good.

Bush in Chhera Dip in Bangladesh

I continued my journey and found the dominance of a kind of tree apart from the coconut trees. Those are kind of bush but have strong roots. You can call them tamarisk. I explored quite a bit of the area of the island. Sadly, I could not complete my goal as there was a portion that went underwater. I either had to cross that part with a boat or by swimming. I didn’t want to do either. I later realized that it’s possible to circumnavigate the entire island on foot during low tide. When it’s over, certain parts get underwater and you cannot cross those by foot.

Trip to Chhera Island

Boat in Saint Martin's Island

I have been hearing about a beautiful little extended island. Its name is  Chhera Dwip , which means Torn Island. As the island gets separated from the main island during high tide, the people named it so. I rented a boat to visit there. The boat was interesting. It was engine driven and there was no designated seat for the passengers. We had to sit on the edge of the boat. Those who could not gather the courage sat on the hollow part of the boat.

Just take a moment to look at the water, it was so transparent we could see everything beneath the water.

Chhera Island in Bangladesh

Just 10 minutes of boat ride gave us a glimpse of the shore of Chhera Dwip. As I mentioned earlier, this is a part of Saint Martin’s island, but this area is uninhabited. It looked marvelous from far. As we were approaching nearby, a part of me started thinking of myself as Robinson Crusoe.

Chera Dwip in Bangladesh

There was not a single soul on the island. After much attention, I could find only a boat unattended on the beach. I walked the entire island on foot. It was such a lovely brief walk; the time went by in a jiffy.

Corals in Saint Martins Bangladesh

Saint Martin’s is a coral island. Although most of the coral islands are in Oceania, Bangladesh somehow got one! Coral is an important part of our ecosystem and helps fishes to grow. A coral reef environment supports a lot of plant and animal species.

Coral in Saint Martin's Island in Bangladesh

Corals are rough. If you walk on coral on a barefoot, you need to be cautious, otherwise, you will end up with a cut on your foot. Sadly, the corals of Saint Martins are dying because of the pollution caused by tourists. It has reached a point where the Government of Bangladesh is considering shutting down the island temporarily for the tourists.

Kindly do not remove any coral or buy one if someone approaches you with an offer of selling coral. The removal of corals is hurting the biodiversity of that area badly. Your action on it can make a difference to the world.

Dancing with Waves

Bay of Bengal in Saint Martin's Island

In one part of the  Chhera Dwip , the ocean was open. We crossed some giant coral and reached the water. The waves were gigantic and alluring. We could not resist the temptation and jump into the sea. The waves were literally crushing on us. We did not go further but, even standing in a fixed location and embracing those giant waves were mind-blowing. We wouldn’t want to get out of the weather that day. However, the boatman gave us a signal and our lovely time ended.

The Barbecue

Barbecue party in Saint Martin's Island

Once you are in the Saint Martin’s you simply cannot leave the island without having a barbecue feast. Your hotel will arrange it if you ask them beforehand. Do not forget to check the price to avoid any unpleasant situation later. It’s not a bad idea to bargain a bit. There is not much to do there at night. However, you need not find anything else on a full moon or starry night right beside the sea and savoring a mouth-watering barbecued fish.

Getting Back

Sunset in Naf River

Thus our journey in Saint Martin’s island ended. We were getting back to Teknaf, the nearest mainland from Saint Martin’s via ship. As the birds were accompanied by us, I was contemplating our last few days. I have been to many famous islands in Asia. Saint Martin’s island in Bangladesh is different compared to all of them. It has a mellow vibe like no other island. You won’t find any supermarkets, you can’t drink alcohol, you can’t party with the noise of a disco bar – what you will find is nature at its best. The locals will serve your need for a supermarket, delicious coconut will make you forget about alcohol. The songs of the ocean will be sweeter than any sound of disco bars.

Boat in Naf River

We were all tired as the excitement faded away. I saw many sleeping faces on the ship. As the sun was setting down in the Naf river, it created a trail of light. Two fishermen didn’t have time to enjoy it in the distance, they were busy fishing. As the trail of golden soft light engulfed the boat, I was wondering who was happier in life between me and them. Then again, I cursed and rebuked myself. Who wants to compare lives in such a serene setting? It’s such a moment in life when you become grateful to be alive on this lovely, lonely planet.

Practicalities

Best time for visiting saint martin’s island.

  • November to February, December is the busiest. The weather is comparatively cool this time.
  • If you visit between March to July, you must see the weather forecast. If a tropical storm hits, you cannot go there.

How to reach to Saint Martin’s Island

You have to take a ship from Teknaf to reach Saint Martin’s Island.

You can come to Teknaf in several ways. But the most common way of arriving in Teknaf is from Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka, or Chittagong.

So, the routes can be:

  • Dhaka –> Cox’s Bazar (400 Kilometres, 10 hours) –> Teknaf (63 Kilometres, 2 hours 30 minutes)
  • Dhaka –> Teknaf (430 Kilometers, 11 Hours)
  • Dhaka –> Chittagong (250 Kilometers, 6 hours) –> Teknaf (200 Kilometres, 6 hours)
  • Dhaka –> Chittagong (250 Kilometers, 6 hours) –> Saint Martin’s by ship.

From Teknaf take a ship to Saint Martin’s (90 minutes to 120 minutes)

People usually choose number 1 to break the long journey and spend a night in Cox’s Bazar which has a long uninterrupted albeit crowded beach.

The time it will take for the road journey is approximate and can vary a lot depending on notorious traffic in Bangladesh.

#4 is a recent addition. A ship named Bay One has started it’s operation and will take you directly from Chittagong to Saint Martin’s in 6 to 8 hours. It departs from the Naval Beach, Water Bus Ghat in Chittagong at 11:00 PM and arrives at Saint Martin’s at 6:00 AM. It leaves for Chittagong from Saint Martin’s at 1:00 PM.

  • Dhaka –> Cox’s Bazar (1 hour flight). Then Cox’s Bazar –> Teknaf (2 hours 30 minutes) –> Take a ship (90 to 120 minutes)
  • Dhaka –> Chittagong (45 minutes flight) — > Saint Martin’s by an overnight Ship (6 to 8 hours)

Timing of the Ship

Only a handful of ships commute between Teknaf and Saint Martin’s island. The ships usually start between –

  • 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM from Teknaf to Saint Martin’s
  • 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM from Saint Martin’s to Teknaf

It means, if you arrive at Teknaf after 9:30 AM, you have to wait for another day to visit Saint Martin’s. On the other hand, you cannot leave Saint Martin’s before 3:00 PM. Make your plan accordingly because those designated ships are the only safe option for commuting to and from Saint Martin’s island. It’s strongly advisable to buy a ticket in advance during the high season. During the low season, you can buy tickets from Teknaf.

Welcome to the stunning St. Martin’s Island, a tiny jewel tucked away in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, just 9 km south of the tip of the Cox’s Bazar – Teknaf peninsula. This coral paradise forms the southernmost tip of Bangladesh and is nothing short of breathtaking. With its beauty and allure, St. Martin’s has become a must-visit destination for both locals and international tourists. Get ready to be captivated by the charm of this enchanting island, where every corner tells a story of natural wonders and a tranquil escape by the sea.

Helpful Information

Winter – The best time to visit St. Martin Island is between October – February when the weather is dry and cool, and the sea is calm. During this period, the day temperature is not so high, so it’s comfortable on the island. This is the high tourist season so expect crowded beaches and sold out accommodations.

Summer  – It is too hot and humid on the island, and the sea is rough due to frequent storms and rain. Therefore the island is closed to visitors between Many and August.

There are several ways to get to St. Martin Island. First, you need to go to Teknaf, the southernmost part of Bangladesh, and then get on a ‘sea truck’ or small ship to continue to Saint Martin.

By Bus to Tekanf from Dhaka

There are many bus services from Dhaka Saydabad & Fakirapul that goes to Teknaf. Most of the overnight bus arrives Teknaf early morning to make it a smooth transfer to the 9:00 AM Ferry. Get off at Teknaf port. Don’t forget to tell the bus staff before to let you down at the Teknaf Port Jetty from where all the ships leave. Or you can take a bus to Cox’s Bazar stay overnight. Enjoy the famous beach town, and then continue your trip towards Tekanf Ferry Terminal early next morning.

From Dhaka by Air to Cox’s Bazar then by Road to Teknaf

There are daily flights available from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar, and the flight time is about 65 minutes. From Cox’s Bazar airport, hire a Car or microbus with a driver to get to Teknaf Ferry Terminal.

Public buses are starting at 6:00 AM onwards from Cox’s bazar Bus Terminal to Teknaf. You need to get on one of these buses before 7:00 AM to catch the 9:00 AM ship from Teknaf to St. Martin. The bus will drop you off right at the Teknaf Ferry Port.

Tekanf to S. Martin’s Island

The only way to get to Saint Martin’s Island is by sea. You can hire a speedboat that is faster but definitely unsafe to cross the deep sea.

Small safer ships (Sea Trucks) are available, which leaves Teknaf at 9:00 AM and returns at 3:00 PM daily. The distance from Teknaf Port to St. Martin’s is about 31 km, and it takes about 3 hours by Sea Trucks.

Getting Around On The Island

It’s a small island about 8 sq km in low tide and reduces to about 5 sq km in high tide so. The tiny island can be explored on foot. There are not motor Vehicles on the island, not even motorcycles, flatbed the wheels cycle-rickshaws are the only mode of transportation apart from walking.

St. Martin’s is a tiny island that can be explored in a day if you plan not to spend overnight on the island. But I highly recommend staying overnight. There are many hotels on the island to choose from. Also, most of the day-trippers leave the island by the 3 pm ferry so you can enjoy the rest of the day peacefully. The beautiful sunset and the sunrise are one of many things that will bring add up to your stay.

So, my recommendation is 3 days trip from Dhaka. One night at Cox’s Bazar, one night on the island and one night in Teknaf.

I was there for two days and found it more than enough to cover my interest.

Here Are Some Tips

  • Keep plenty of Cash you many not have access to ATM or Money Exchange at all the places.
  • If you are getting off at Teknaf port. Don’t forget to tell the bus staff ahead to let you down at the Teknaf Port Jetty from where all the ships leave.

I opted for the 9:00 am ship, also known as Sea Trucks, offering a leisurely three-hour voyage filled with sea breezes and scenic views.

However, it is important for visitors to respect the island’s fragile environment and to practice responsible tourism. By doing so, we can ensure that this beautiful island remains a gem in the Bay of Bengal for generations to come.

Saint Martin’s, the one and only coral island of Bangladesh, is a small island measuring eight square kilometers. The visible landmass sinks during the tide. Alternatively called the pearl of the sea, it is about 10 km from the mainland at teknaf. The safest means of transport is the government-owned ferry which takes around two hours one way. Tourists have the option to spend a few hours and return the same day or stay for one or two days. Due to ferry’s timing, one and a half days tour is practical. Relaxation and fun on the picturesque place of blue sky and coconut trees, swimming in crystal blue water, snorkeling in the lagoon, and walking in the fresh air will be a lifetime experience. The seafood with its variety and taste has an appeal. There are a good number of hotels, guest houses, and eateries. There are a scuba diving facility and a sea turtle hatchery. Since it is a small island one can tour the entire area on foot in a few hours. The permanent residents of the island, numbering around 8,000, are all fishermen.

You can reach Teknaf from any part of the country by Bus, Private car. Carey Sindabad, Eagle, LCT Kutubdia, Sea-Truck, Kajal, Sonargaon, Green Line Bay Crew (AC) can cross the Bay of Bengal in two-and-a-half hours to reach St. Martin from Teknaf.

Saint Martin’s Island: A Beautiful Island At Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh

Saint Martin’s Island is a coral island in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal in the far south of Bangladesh. St. Martin’s Island is located about 9 km south of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar district and 8 km west of the coast of Myanmar at the mouth of the Naf River.

It is also locally called Narikel Jinjira because of the abundance of coconuts available. Many years ago, in unfavorable weather conditions, an Arabian merchant ship loaded with cinnamon crashed into a huge rock under the water, causing the cinnamon on board to spread throughout the island, later renamed St. Martin’s Island as ‘Cinnamon’. Island ‘. The film Daruchini Dwip, written by Humayun Ahmed and directed by Taukir Ahmed, was shot here.

is saint martin bangladesh open for tourism

St. Martin’s Island is a popular tourist destination. During the tourist season, 5 launches come and go from the mainland of Bangladesh every day. The real fun of St. Martin cannot be enjoyed without one night. It is better to have two nights.

In that case, 1 day can be set aside for Chera Dwip, another day for St. Martin. Every day tourists return in the afternoon, so the fun of visiting the island in the afternoon is different. And if you can go to the full moon, then no need to wander around St. Martin’s Island at night and increase your desire to live.

Table of Contents

How much is a bicycle rental in St. Martin?

Bicycles can be rented from a few places on the island, especially from West Beach, for 60-70 rupees per hour. You will be able to walk around the beach to satisfy your desires.

How long is the electricity in St. Martin?

St. Martin has no PDB or rural-electricity connection. Totally dependent on the generator. Resort-hotels usually run generators from evening to 10-11 pm. During the day the water pump can be turned on for a while. Since there is no fan in winter, there is no lack of current during the day.

The problem is with charging mobiles, cameras, and laptops. At night, in the light and glittering atmosphere of the row of restaurants at the jetty, it does not seem that there is no electricity on the island. They keep the generator running for many nights.

The Way To Go To Saint Martin

The time needed: 17 hours. Teknaf can be reached by bus from Dhaka, Chittagong, and Cox’s Bazar. Regular buses are available from Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar for Teknaf. Teknaf can also be reached by renting a microbus from Cox’s Bazar.

Buses from Dhaka to Teknaf

Teknaf buses are available at Fakirapul in Dhaka and Sayedabad. Eagle, Modern Line, S Alam, Shyamoli, Green Line, etc. buses go to Teknaf. It takes 10-13 hours to reach. If you get on the train from Dhaka at 6 pm, you can get off at Damdamiya Jahat Ghat or Teknaf town between 7-8 am and go by ship or trawler.

However, if it is closed for a long time, many people will be delayed due to heavy traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong road. In that case, there is a possibility of missing the ship. Because all the ships leave at 9:30. In that case, it can be done by a trawler.

Ship from Teknaf to St. Martin

Teknaf Shipyard You need to buy a sea truck/ship ticket. The distance from Teknaf to St. Martin is 9 km. Here you have to cross the rough sea. The sea is calm in winter so it is much safer to go here at this time.

During this tourist season, there are several ships or sea trucks plying from Teknaf to St. Martin, including Green Line water buses, LC Kutubdia, Kajal, Kerry Sindbad. The ship left for St. Martin at 10 a.m. and returned at 3 p.m.

St. Martin can also be reached by trawler and speed boat. Sea trucks run until April. After that, the administration did not allow it to continue due to hostile weather. However, those who want to go to St. Martin as an adventure in the hostile season can rent a trawler.

However, this journey is not very safe. Accidents don’t usually happen, but they can happen. So be careful. But for those who can’t resist the temptation to see the real world or the temptation to take a shower on a deserted island, there is no alternative but a trawler. Where To Eat At Saint Martin’s Island

There are restaurants in almost all residential hotels, so you can eat there if you want. Apart from this, you can order all the food from the various live fish arranged on the table outside the hotel. You can do bar-b-que at night, pick fish and tell them they will do it for you. Here are some tips to visit St. Martin. To visit St. Martin, you can contact several travel agencies from Dhaka, including Carey. The ship ran for only 4 months from November to March.

If you want to go another time, you have to go by trawler. St. Martin now has many hotels, resorts, and cottages so there is no shortage of accommodation. It is better not to go to the island on Friday-Saturday to stay at affordable prices. Everything on the island is left out, so the cost of food is relatively high. The cost per person in three days will be 5-6 thousand Tk. By enlarging the team, it is possible to go around for less than 3 and a half thousand Tk.

Saint Martin’s Island

The only coral island of bangladesh, saint martin's island.

Saint Martin's Island is the only coral island in Bangladesh. Locally known as Narikel Jinjira or Coconut Island, was named after a British provincial governor. Saint Martin's Island is located in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, about 8 kilometres south of the tip of Bangladesh's southernmost peninsula, Cox's Bazaar-Teknaf.

The Dumbbell-shaped Saint Martin’s Island has only about 8sq km, which is reduced to about 5sq km during the high tide and forms one to four islands. This beautiful island only exists because of its coral base. Three smaller islands -Zinjira, Gakachira and Chiradia or Chera Dwip – are located just south of the main island. At the low tide, they’re essentially one body of land, and a narrow strip of land connects them with the main island. A rocky platform surrounds the entire island and extends into the sea, with excellent sands almost all around the island and an ideal place for sunbathing . Saint Martin’s Island is one of the best places in the country for hiking around, especially in the winter season (October to early March). It is possible to walk all around the main island within a day. There are very few mosquitoes in the winter and only a marginally more during the summer season. St. Martin’s island provides the best nesting ground for sea turtles and has the country’s only clear water suitable for snorkeling.

Most of the island’s inhabitants live primarily from fishing; there is a small production of rice and some seasonal vegetables. October to April is the peak of the fishing season for the resident anglers to bring their catches from neighboring areas. For travelers who love fish, this place can be a paradise for them, do not judge a restaurant here by its outlook, the food can be up to the mark.

St. Martin Island does not have a power supply from the national electricity grid, so the residents and the hotels are depending on their own generated electricity by solar or generators. Visitors should be aware of the limited electricity supply by their hotel for a certain time of the day, which is mostly in the evening; from 6 pm to 10 pm. There are no A/C hotels on this island.

You can combine a trip to Chittagong, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar with Saint Martin’s Island .

St. Martin's Island (সেন্ট মার্টিন্স দ্বীপ/ সেন্ট মার্টিন আইল্যান্ড) is a small island (area only 8 km2) in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar Teknaf peninsula, and forming the southernmost part of Bangladesh. There is a small adjoining island that is separated at high tide, called Chhera Island. It is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of the northwest coast of Myanmar, at the mouth of the Naf River. Local name of the island is "Narical Gingira", also spelled "Narikel Jinjira/ Jinjera", that means 'Coconut Island' in Bengali. It is the only one coral island in Bangladesh.

St Martin’s Island is perfect for tourist who is truly interested in escaping the holds of a modern world. Do not expect to find taxis, tarred roads or electricity here. Lodges are dependent on generators, as the island is all about sun, sea and palm trees. During the day, the island comes alive with water and beach sports, with beach parties and bonfires lighting up the evening skies. For the use of a phone or a reminder of what a television set looks like, visitors can pop down to the Coast Guard station.

It's possible to walk around the island in a day because it measures only 8 km2 (3 sq. mile), shrinking to about 5 km2 (2 sq. mi) during high tide. This is the only coral island of Bangladesh.

St. Martin's Island has become a popular tourist place. Currently, some (about 5 to 6 in number) shipping liners run daily trips to the island, including Sea-Truck and Keary-Sindbad. Tourists can book their trip either from Chittagong or from Cox's Bazar or from Dhaka. The surrounding coral reef of the island has an extension named Chera Dwip. The golden sandy sea beach and crystal clear blue water memorize you the koh lipe island of Thailand.
