Things to do on Vacation

How to get to Isla Mujeres

Things to do in Cozumel

Cozumel, Mexico is the largest populated island in the country and the top cruise destination in Latin America. Almost every cruise ship has Cozumel on its journey. Discover what to do in Cozumel!

This fabulous destination is a shopping paradise for international visitors, especially Cozumel cruise tourists. There are several duty-free perfume shops, jewelry, cigar, and liquor stores. Fall in love with this Mexican Caribbean island with a peaceful atmosphere, astounding natural sites, and kind people.

The Pre-Hispanic past in Cozumel Island

Cozumel Island had Pre-Hispanic's presence, and there is evidence that the first settlers arrived almost 2000 years ago. A sanctuary to tribute Ixchel, the Pre-Hispanic goddess of the moon and fertility, grew in relevance, and a pilgrimage took place every year to visit it and hear the oracle.

This island is growing popular due to its hotels, peaceful atmosphere, and spectacular places for snorkeling or scuba diving. Find activities and attractions in Cozumel, Mexico to visit them on your next vacation to the Mexican Caribbean.

Scuba diving in Cozumel

Scuba diving is one of the top Cozumel excursions for tourists of all ages. The second largest reef system in the world goes from north of Cancun to Central America.

Arrecifes Cozumel National Park comprehends almost 30,000 acres of the protected area, which is home for sea turtles, stingrays, dozens of fish species, and several types of coral. Diving in Cozumel is an outstanding experience, and both masters and beginners from all over the world arrive every year to dip into the waters of Cozumel and get wondered by the beautiful undersea landscape.

There are numerous places along the island for diving. The visibility ranges from 115 to 210 ft, making Cozumel Island an exceptional place for this activity. Sites such as Palancar, ParaĂso, Santa Rosa, or Paso del Cedral are recommended for beginners.

Maracaibo reef is a challenge among skilled scuba divers. This reef on the south side of the island has strong sea currents but with astounding beauty. The area known as Maracaibo Wall has open coral tunnels and more than 500 yd deep.

Snorkel in Cozumel is also a fantastic option for visitors. This activity is almost available in every point of the island facing Playa del Carmen since it has calm waters and clarity to watch fish and other marine species.

Cozumel Attraction

One of the best things to do in Cozumel is visiting the east side of the island to find almost virgin beaches. Rent a car or scooter and have a marvelous view of the ocean. Since there are open water beaches, sea currents are strong and must be careful. There are some restaurants to enjoy the view and taste Mexican dishes with a fresh beverage.

During the afternoon, the Boardwalk is a terrific place to walk through. Along the avenue are handicraft shops, restaurants, and some bars. Watching the cruise ships depart is a relaxing way to enjoy the sunset. Day or night there are fun Cozumel activities to enjoy.

Cozumel excursions also include the San Gervasio archaeological zone, which was a sanctuary dedicated to Ixchel, the Pre-Hispanic goddess of fertility and love.

There are also museums at Cozumel downtown . The island's museum takes you on a journey by its history, pre-Columbian legacy, and is one of Cozumel highlights due to the lush underwater life that made famous this island around the globe.

The island houses parks of great beauty that encloses beautiful ecosystems. You can swim with dolphins in Cozumel at some of these places, plus enjoying lagoons, snorkel, or cultural activities.

Sacred Pre-Hispanic Journey

During May takes place the Sacred Pre-Hispanic Journey, which is a representation of the pilgrimage by canoe that reached the Ixchel oracle in Cozumel. Hundreds of hardworking participants paddle as a team to arrive at the coast of Cozumel and return to Xcaret the next day, after leaving offerings to the goddess.

Cozumel Carnival

One of the most representative carnivals in Mexico is at Cozumel and takes place in February. During five days, the streets become full of joy, dancing teams, a colorful parade, and tasty food, plus music concert by renowned artists.

Travel to Cozumel

Enjoy a relaxing vacation in the largest populated island in Mexico. Discover all the Cozumel activities in its beaches, snorkeling or scuba diving at its reefs; enter a theme park and taste delicious seafood and Mexican dishes in this beach destination.

Cozumel Xcaret Excursion Questions.

By Daruma , March 6 in Carnival Cruise Lines

Hello, folks.

Ok, a question or two regarding the Cozumel Xcaret Excursion.

It says it's 7 hours long, but several YouTube reviews have said they tend to wrap it up early so they can "conveniently" drop you back with plenty of time to shop in the port... how considerate of them 🙄

So, can anyone tell me whether or not there's time to float down all three rivers, and if so, are they even different enough to want to do so?

From every review I've read/watched there isn't time to do everything they offer in the park... so dovetailing on the question above... rather than doing all three rivers, if time would even permit doing so, are there way cooler things to do than more than one river? Essentially, would other activities be more fun than a 2nd or 3rd river sojourn?

Thank you for your help.

I was getting really concerned about all the reviews I was reading. Search The Forum because I actually came on here and asked a question about it and ultimately decided to cancel the Excursion for a refund. I can't remember if I posted in this forum or if I posted in the Cozumel forum.

Thanks

Rut roh, Raggy... that doesn't sound good.

Thank you... I'll look up your post history if you don't mind.

total time off the ship is 7 hours, but 3 of those are spent going to/from the park, with only 4 on site.

you do have time to experience all 3 rivers, but i suggest only 1 (the longest, or the 2 shorter ones), because they're similar except for the length and portion of underground caves.

there's so much to do, that you can easily spend 2 full days there, so you will need to preview and plan the sights/activities that you prefer.

Hmmmm... based on that review and @TheLargeFamily  Xcaret post, (I found it), this excursion, while not yet out of the running, is no longer the first place slam dunk I initially thought it was...

Thank you both for the extra "food for thought."

fyi reason why so much time spent on transportation, is due to xcaret park being in playa del carmen, not on island of cozumel.

i enjoyed the visit, unique experiences.

I booked paradise beach instead and I am just as excited!

Thank you.

As I watch more YouTube reviews of this Paradise beach, the more and more it's becoming an up and comer... but I'll do the VIP version if I book this.

If you want a cabana bed book quick. They were gone before I booked it!

My cruise isn't until March 2, 2025... so hopefully I have some time, lol.

1. So very expensive that there are not enough takers to warrant hiring a Tour Guide.

2. 17.5-hour day is too long.

3. 5 hours travel time (1 hour to airport, 1 hour flight + fooling around at airport time = 5 hours). :o

4. There are sooooooo many beautiful places to visit right there in SPb.

Jordan: So sorry if you are disappointed. I know you really wanted to do that. I had not heard that it was cancelled; however, you are going in June, if I remember correctly. I don't go until September. You booked at Cab-Inn? Do you have your pre-cruise Docs?

I plan on doing Moscow another time. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

After reading your post, I had to find out why. Turns out that the Princess web site hasn't been updated. :( The Intro to Moscow excursion lists available dates of Jan 01, 2004 - Sep 30 , 2004 ! Like you, we were planning on this one and are very disappointed. Maybe, and it's probably a BIG maybe, Princess will bring it back. I won't hold my breath though, as this would have to be arranged far in advance for a group outing.

Smooth sailing.

BJS

It is not on the selection for the July 24th Star Princess cruise. They have been available for selecting for about a week now.
