Average White Band’s Farewell To The UK…

average white band uk tour dates

  • Google Plus

The Average White Band, one of the best soul and funk bands of all-time ,  have announced their farewell tour for April and May 2024.

The group – fronted by former Tower Of Power singer Brent Carter – will perform their biggest hits and fan favourites, such as “Let’s Go Round Again”, “Cut The Cake”, “Atlantic Avenue” and US # 1 “Pick Up The Pieces” across their 17-date UK tour.

Starting in Manchester on 26 th April 2024 and closing in Holmfirth, Yorkshire on 18 th May – the  includes a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Formed in London in 1972, the six-piece band somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, took the influences of their r&b heroes such as Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Stevie Wonder, and developed their own authentic sound.

The group’s consistently accomplished song-writing helped them to achieve several gold and platinum-selling albums and multiple Grammy nominations with the legendary Atlantic Records.

In addition to the band’s hit singles, many of their album tracks such as “Schoolboy Crush” and “Person to Person”, among others, have been heavily sampled by the likes of the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, A Tribe Called Quest and Arrested Development – so much so that the AWB are one of the top 15 sampled acts of all time.

Speaking about the farewell tour, founding member Alan Gorrie said, “AWB has been our life for the last 50-plus years and has brought unbelievable highs – and some lows – to us throughout that tumultuous half-century, touring the globe and seeing the millions of happy and friendly faces that have greeted us wherever we have performed.

“That it’s finally coming to an end is going to mean a highly emotional tour next year, but one which will mean we bow out at the top level, thanks in great part to the wonderful five American ‘soul brothers’ who have been our band members for the last many years, and who are some of the best soloists and singers you could find on the planet”.

Onnie McIntyre says: “ Our guys never phone it in, they bring it all every night. The tour will be our way of saying goodbye and thank you to all the people who have supported us over the years. It’ll be wild – bring your dancing shoes.

“No doubt the unbelievable success of ‘Pick Up The Pieces’ and other Grammy-nominated classics helped get us there. We bucked our Scottish roots, took our cues from Marvin Gaye, Al Green and James Brown, and took ‘coals to Newcastle’ when we broke into the US and a huge multi-racial following there, to add to our loyal UK fans.

“We hope to see you all at next Spring’s concerts, and to help us see out our final fling on the British Highway, including Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and any other ‘Royals’ you can think of. Please don’t miss it!!

“As a final tour of the United Kingdom, this will be a joyous (but bittersweet) trip through our roots, our history and our love affair with all of the UK since 1972, when we first stuck our toes in the waters of home-spun Soul and r&b…

“…Taking it to the rest of the world and to success we could hardly have imagined back then. Please join us in a final celebration of that journey, and to a last hurrah of epic proportions with your presence and your ever-ready appreciation!”

Average White Band (AWB) is a Funk/R&B group from Dundee, Scotland. The collective showcased a sound heavily indebted to Blue-eyed soul. In the mid 70s up until the early 80s the band experienced a bout of hit singles.

AWB has expanded and altered its line up frequently over the years going through several incarnations, cycling in and out at least 22 members; however, when the band got it’s start in 1972 it consisted of the following: Alan Gorrie, Malcolm Duncan, Onnie McIntyre, Michael Rosen, Roger Ball, and Robbie McIntosh. Prior to the band’s initial formation, horn players Ball and Duncan attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and were also involved in the progressive rock band Mogul Thrash. AWB’s principal songwriter/singer Alan Gorrie as well as drummer Robbie McIntosh were also in a progressive rock group, Forever More around the same time.

Though the band hailed from Scotland their sound was almost exclusively inspired by American artists. They took cues from the soul scenes burgeoning in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Memphis, integrating techniques previously explored by artists like Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, The Isley Brothers, the Temptations, and Marvin Gaye.

AWB had been together for only one year before they were bolstered into the limelight. The group earned the opportunity to open for Eric Clapton in support of his 1973 comeback concert and gained massive exposure from this event. Their studio debut “Show Your Hand” also came out this year, but unfortunately was a commercial flop. Despite this setback the band landed management under Bruce McCaskill (Clapton’s tour manager) and were later signed to Atlantic Records.

The group moved to Los Angeles following their assimilation onto the label and in August 1974 they put out their 2nd studio album “AWB” (also referred to as the White Album). It was the group’s first album to reach No.1 on the charts and featured the classic hit “Pick Up the Pieces”. The band’s sudden rise into fame was eclipsed by the tragic death of McIntosh (via a drug overdose). AWB played a memorial concert for McIntosh in January 1975 and later replaced him with Bloodstone drummer Steve Ferrone.

In June of 1975 the group issued their 3rd studio album “Cut the Cake”, which featured the No.10 hit title track. “Soul Searching” followed a year later, proving to be yet another success, reaching No. 9 on the US charts and No. 2 on the US R&B Charts. Their 5th album “Benny & Us” deviated a bit from their typical style and was actually a collaborative effort with Soul/R&B legend Ben E. King.

Despite the band’s massive success with their first couple albums, their sales started to plummet with their proceeding releases “Warmer Communications” (1978), “Feel No Fret” (1979), “Shine” (1980), and “Cupid’s in Fashion” (1982). The latter of the releases managed to peak at No. 49 on the R&B album charts, but failed to appear on either the US or UK charts. Distraught by their dwindling commercial success the group disbanded a year later.

In 1989 Gorrie, McIntyre, and Ball reformed the group and that same year put out their 10th studio album “Aftershock”. An even longer span of time stood between this album and their next release “Soul Tattoo”, which was issued in 1997. Six years later AWB released their 12th studio album. Their line up has been in continual flux since their disbandment in 1989; however, Gorrie has been a consistent member throughout these mutations and still continues to lead the group on occasional tours and album releases.

Live reviews

The Average White Band is certainly turned into the stereotypical songs that are played at weddings. You think of the song “Pick up the Pieces” and picture over aged men and women dancing terribly at a wedding reception. It is the image that was in my mind when I went to see this band play.

They were actually very good and had a very mature funk sound. It came across as soulful and very polished. They really sounded like an updated version of a great 1970’s funk band. The guys could really play as well. It also was amazing the number of songs that have been sampled by this band. I could hear rap songs and other hits from the songs that they were playing. They also had a bunch of energy and the crowd really enjoyed dancing to these old funk standards. The people could actually dance pretty well.

I left with a a whole new respect for the Average White Band and they totally redeemed themselves from that image I had in my head when I first heard that name. I also want to get some more of their albums and really listen to the music and get beyond the played out commercial songs.

Report as inappropriate

I grew up listening to AWB. The original band included Steve Ferrone, a drummer who replaced McIntyre. Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre are the only two remaining original band members. It was so nice to see that this new version had not lost that funk sound that made them so popular in the 70’s. They played several of my favorites like “A Love of Your Own.” I must admit I was skeptical of their new lead singer Brent Carter. I was and still, a Hamish Stuart fan. However, Brent Carter did an amazing version of “A Love of Your Own” and he won me over with “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me.” The highlight of the concert was when they performed “School Boy Crush.” Most got up and started dancing/singing. See the concert! You won’t be disappointed. Last tip: get their early and get a seat up front.

I first saw this band c1975 and down the years they have never failed to produce a first class show.

Last night at the Royal Festival Hall, they ran through their back catalogue and added a couple of new songs in their usual slick, funky style. The musicianship was top class and the vocals immaculate.

When they are back in the UK don’t miss seeing them, you won’t be disappointed especially if you like funky, blue eyed soul.

AWB was as great as ever, have caught them many times at large venues but was extra special in this intimate club atmosphere, unfortunately the service and food at Catalina bar and grill was terrible won't be going back , the host at the door was somewhat of a prude when seating our party , otherwise the Band was jumping.

If you get the chance don't miss them.

Favorite band of all time but last night they just we not in to it. Pretty quick show left out many top hits. No energy looked tired. Never seen this before and been to over 15 shows. Maybe because they were second billed to the O Jays? Pretty disappointing

Songkick had the wrong dates for show. The actual date of the show is two days later. So as this posting I have not seen the show yet. Fortunately the mistake was not the other way ir u could have missed the show.

First time at

The Promontory. AWB was great. Danced all night. The venue was similar to City Winery. Dinner was good too. The band played their most popular songs and we all loved it.

Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Ben E. King and a young Barack Obama were amongst the group’s early admirers, and the group’s legendary appearances on  Soul Train  were followed by a string of R&B hits and Grammy nominations. The film will blend archival footage with fresh interviews to chronicle the band’s trajectory. The documentary announcement comes as the current version of Average White Band continues its farewell tour, which has already included landmark venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, Edinburgh’s Usher Hall and the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.

Baxter won a BAFTA Scotland Award for Eye of the Storm about pioneering landscape artist James Morrison. His 2011 feature,  You’ve Been Trumped , won awards at the Sheffield, Hamptons, Denver and Sedona International Film Festivals.

“Sky Arts audiences love great music docs with a layered story, so the opportunity to board this feature doc on the funkadelic Average White Band was simply too good to be true,” said Jack Oliver, Sky’s co-production boss. “Director Anthony Baxter has an ambitious vision for the piece and assembled great co-production partners to the project.”

Stacy Robinson, Artistic Director at Kartemquin Films, added: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Director, Anthony Baxter on this film. Average White Band isn’t just a band, it’s a testament to the cultural crossroads where soul, funk, and rhythm resonate across generations, continents, and race.”
