Day 1: Drive From Pokhara to Lete

Location of Muktinath Temple

Muktinath Temple is 24km northeast of Jomsom at 3710 meters from sea level. The temple lies in the Annapurna Circuit, one of Nepal's most popular trekking routes. To reach Muktinath Temple, one has to cross the Thorong-La mountain pass in the Annapurna Conservation Area of Manang district in Nepal.

How to Get to Muktinath? Options for Muktinath tour package

1st option: muktinath tour by road - 3 nights (kathmandu - pokhara - jomsom - muktinath).

Following the Prithivi Highway from Kathmandu, you can reach Pokhara, crossing Bedi, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha Jomsom, and Kagbeni; the next destination will be Muktinath. There is an option of taking a bus or Jeep from Kathmandu or Pokhara. You can choose any travel agency that offers the  Muktinath Jeep Tour package if you don't want the hassle of booking buses and jeeps.

First Stop:  The road of the Muktinath Tour that begins from Pokhara is quite comfortable. A night stay at Pokhara is what most travelers prefer as it is a tourist hub, and the facility of accommodation is available here, from cheap guesthouses to high-class five-star hotels. Besides this, shopping centers and restaurants near the lakeside are other attractions to entertain visitors.

Second Stop : The next stop of this trip will be Jomsom, lying at an elevation of 3734 meters from sea level is about 170km away from Pokhara. The road is fine for 100km from Beni and then rough for 70km to Jomsom. If you wish to visit Muktinath Temple on the same day, you can easily reach the temple, do some Pooja and even return to Jomsom. The duration of the trip is around nine hours.

You can make your trip the next day by catching a jeep after having a walk of around half an hour and then one and a half hour drive to Ranipauwa Jeep Station at Muktinath Temple. A hike of another twenty-five minutes from here will take you to the entrance of the temple. Once you reach the top, you can have Pooja at the temple and enjoy the surrounding views. You will have the option to stop at Beni or head back to Pokhara.

2nd option: Muktinath Tour By Flight - 1 night (Kathmandu - Pokhara - Jomsom - Muktinath) 

There is no direct flight from Kathmandu, so Jomsom airport is nearest to Muktinath Temple. So, first, you need to reach Pokhara and then take a trip to Jomsom. Flights to Jomsom are frequently delayed as the place is windy.

On the other hand, flights from Pokhara to Jomsom are operated only in the morning, so a night stay at Pokhara is compulsory. 

3rd option: Muktinath Tour By Helicopter - 1:30 hours (Kathmandu - Muktinath)

From Kathmandu, you can easily book Muktinath yatra by Helicopter . It takes around an hour and a half to reach Muktinath Temple from Kathmandu via Helicopter. There is a helipad at Ranipauwa, and half an hour of walk from here will take you to the temple.

4th option: Visit Muktinath By Trek - 7 nights

Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara

Early morning drive through the beautiful Nepalese countryside to reach the Pokhara. Drive from Pokhara to Jomsoom

Jomsom is 157km away from Pokhara. It takes nearly 6 hours to reach Jomsom. On the way to Jomsom, you can explore the greenery of Nepal. The route follows the Kali Gandaki River The kali Gandaki River is also one of the fastest-flowing rivers in Nepal. You will get to witness the mind-blowing views of different places like Ghasa, Lete, Kobang, Marpha, and Jomsom. On the way, you will get to see the most beautiful Rupse waterfall. It is a 300m high waterfall and the most popular place among tourists as it is on the way to Jomsom.   Jomsom is also known as Dzong-Sampa or New Fort. Jomsom is located in Nepal's Mustang District on both banks of the Kali Gandaki River. Mustang district's capital is Jomsom. The Kali Gandaki is the world's deepest gorge. Early morning Drive to Muktinath and Drive back to Pokhara

Early in the morning, we will drive to Muktinath temple. It is nearly 25km from Jomsoom. We can reach in 1 hour and after that you can hire a horse and can go to the temple or else you can walk the stairs and reach the temple. After reaching the temple you can go and worship Lord Vishnu. After worshipping don't forget to take a bath in 108 water spouts and 2 ponds. It is believed that taking a bath in spouts and ponds brings salvation. Enjoy the cultural and worshipping environment of devotes and vibe the nature. 

After visiting the temple we will go to Kagbeni. It is famous among Hindu pilgrims. It is believed that doing puja in Kagbeni for Pitri helps the ancestors to reach Heaven. After visiting Muktinath we will drive back to Pokhara. Pokhara is 157km away from Jomsom. It takes nearly 6 hours but for us, it will be 9/10 hours. On the way to Pokhara, we will visit the monastery situated on the way. We will visit different caves located on the way which have been there from nearly more than 1000 years ago. We will stop at Rupse waterfall. You can click pictures and have fun playing in the water. After that, we will visit the local Dhaba to have the local Nepali meal. We will sing, dance, play games do fun activities, and come back to Pokhara.

Permits Required for Muktinath:

You will need to obtain a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) permit and an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) before you proceed for the Muktinath tour. We will provide this permits and necessary documents for your trip. If you want arrange yourself, you can obtain these permits from the Nepal Tourism Board in Pokhara or from the checkpoint in Jomsom.

When is the Best Time for Muktinath tour?

The best time to visit Muktinath temple is from March to June and from September to November. The weather during these months is pleasant, and the skies are clear, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

In monsoon season there might be problem of landslides and flood in Kaligandki river area, so this tour is not recommended.

Start early in the morning from Pokhara to Jomsom by jeep. We drive through the scenic route along the Kali Gandaki River and pass through charming villages such as Tukuche, Marpha, and Jomsom. Overnight we will stay in a hotel in Jomsom.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Wake up early in the morning to witness the stunning views of the sunrise over the Himalayas. Drive for half hour to Muktinath temple and visit the Muktinath temple and take a dip in the holy waters of the 108 taps. Visit the nearby Kunda and Jwala Mai temples. Explore the nearby villages of Kagbeni and Jharkot. Drive back to Pokhara via the same scenic route. Stop by at Tatopani, where you can take a dip in the natural hot springs and relax. Reach Pokhara by late evening.

Muktinath (GOD OF MOKCHHYA) It is believed that all miseries and sorrows are relieved once you visit this temple (Mukti = Nirvana, Nath = God). The famous temple of Lord Muktinath is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists lies in the district of Mustang and is situated about 18 km northeast of Jomsom at an altitude of about 3,749 mt. (12184 ft.) The main shrine is a pagoda shaped temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Set into the wall around it, are 108 water spouts from which pour holy water. The jwala Mai (goddess of flame) temple nearby contains a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural gas underground. About 16 miles from Muktinath is the Damodara Kundam, the source of Kali Gandaki river. One can find Saligrama stones on the bank of this river. There are accommodation facilities available in Jomsom and Muktinath from where one can enjoy remarkable natural beauty.

Muktinath is a sacred place both for Hindus and Buddhists located in Muktinath Valley at an altitude of 3,710 meters at the foot of the Thorong La pass, Mustang district, Nepal. The Hindus call the sacred place Mukti Kshetra, which literally means the “place of salvation”.  Mainly the temple is with a predominant Sri Vaishnava origin and worshipped by Buddhists. This temple is considered to be the 105th among the available 108 Divya Desam. The ancient name of this place, before Buddhist origin is known as Thiru Saligramam. This houses the Saligrama sila considered to be the naturally available form of Sriman Narayana – the Hindu God HEAD. It is also one of the 51 Sakthi peetams.

The central shrine of Sri Muktinath, predominant among all 108 Hindu SriVaishnava Divyadesam is considered one of the eight most sacred shrines for Hindu Vaishnavas known as Svayam Vyakta Ksetras, the other seven being Srirangam, Srimushnam, Tirupati, Naimisharanya, Totadri, Pushkar and Badrinath. The temple is very small. Muktinath is one of the most ancient Hindu temples of God Vishnu. The murti is of gold and is tall enough to compare with a man. The prakaram(outer courtyard) has 108 bull faces through which water is poured. It is of freezing temperature. The sacred water that flows in 108 pipes around the temple complex denote all sacred Pushkarini waters (Temple Tanks) from all 108 Sri Vaishnava Divya Desams including Srirangam, Tirumala, Vaikunta, where the devotees take their sacred bath even in the freezing temperatures.

In Hindu astrology, there are 12 zodiac or Rashi and 9 planets or Graha, giving a total of 108 combinations. Also there are 27 Lunar mansions or Nakshatras which are divided in 4 quarters or Padas each giving a combination of 108 Padas in total. The worship is conducted by Buddhist nuns.

The waterway downstream from Muktinath along Kali Gandaki is the source of all Silas or Shaligrams that are required to establish a temple of Vishnu anywhere in the world. It is considered to be one of the holiest places of pilgrimage of Hindus, Buddhists, and Vaishnavas.

*Muktinath Temple :* The Pagoda style Muktinath Temple is symbol of the religious symbiosis between both Hindus and Buddhists. Hindu believes that lord Vishnu got salvation from curse of Brinda (wife of Jalandhar) here. Therefore he is worshipped as Muktinath (Lit. the lord of salvation). The holy shrine, which is said to have risen on its own, is one of eight such shrines (the others include Srirangam, Sri Mushnam, Tirupati, Naimisaranyam, Thottadri, Pushkaram and Badrinath). It is also one of 108 Vaishnava shrines. Here in the early 19th century the Hindus consecrated a Vishnu temple and named is Muktinath – Lord of Liberation. Against a backdrop of incredible starkness you can sit and stare to the south the snow covered Annapurna range, or to the north the Tibetan plateau.

*Kunda:* In front of MuktinathTemple there are 2 Kunda (Water pond), Where holy dip is believed it can wash away negative karma, the results of one’s past negative actions.

*Mukti Dhara:* Around the temple is a wall from the temple which there are 108 waterspouts (Dhara) name of “Muktidhara”. The 108 faucets in the cast in the shape of bulls’ heads, pour fourth-sacred water closely arranged in a semi-circle with a gap of hardly a foot between the faucets, at a height of seven feet. The water from Gandaki River continuously flowing through the mouth of the bull. Pilgrims who visit the temple take a holy bath in each of these spouts. But as the water is ice cold it requires burning desire and courage to take a holy bath here. Hindu devotees take bath under chilled water of 108 waterspouts “Muktidhara” believing that it brings them salvation. The holy flame alongside a spring that is the source of the religious importance of Muktinath. *Swaminarayan:* One Hindu Guru connected to Muktinath is Lord Shri Swaminarayan, Satguru of Sabij Yoga, the goal of which is the realization of and service to God Supreme. At the end of the 18th century this Satguru practiced severe penance in Muktinath for two and a half months and attained the highest degree of proficiency in Nishkamvrat. In 2003 his followers funded the new wall around Muktinath and raised a small monument for him at Muktinath.

*Shaligram:* Another attraction for the pilgrimage is the River kali Gandaki from where one can collect fossils of the Jurassic park age. One may find a fossil within a few minutes or it may take hours and without success.

However, these fossils can be had from the local people at a price. Shaligram, a black stone fossil if found, is considered sacred and is kept in pooja (prayer) room in the house. It is supposed to be symbol of Lord Vishnu.

Kathmandu, Pokhara & Muktinath Tour 2024

Introduction:

In this Muktinath Tour Package, while we are visiting Shree Muktinath Temple, we also cover the major sightseeing places in Kathmandu and Pokhara. There are UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu that we should not miss. Similarly, at Pokhara, nature has crafted the city with Caves, Lakes, Water Falls, and Temples. Let's not miss out on the jewels of these cities and choose this package for your pilgrimage tour to Muktinath.

We commence the tour from Kathmandu by taking grace from Lord Pashupatinath. There will be a special aarti darshan during the evening time. All four doors of Pashupatinath will be opened and we can enter to see aarti.

On the second day, our destination will be Pokhara. It's the second largest city in Nepal and the main tourist hub to start and ends treks around Annapurna Region. We are going to catch our flight to Jomsom from here.

On the way to Pokhara, another attraction will be Manakamana Goddess Temple. It is believed that Manakamana Goddess has the power to fulfill the wishes of her devotees. So, daily there will be hundreds of pilgrimages from around Nepal and from India. We ride on 6 seated Cable Car for 10 mins and visit Manakamana Temple.

The third day is the main and adventurous day of our Muktinath tour package. We are going to visit Shree Muktinath Temple today. Our Pokhara to Jomsom flight offers magnificent views of Annapurna Mountain Range and Dhaulagiri Mountain Range. It's the 10th and 7th highest peak in the world respectively.

From Jomsom, we drive to Muktinath which offers the mind-blowing landscape of Mustang surrounded by barren hills. The road follows the Kaligandaki River where we can try our luck to find holy Shaligram. After completing our ritual activities at Muktinath we return to Kathmandu following the same route.

Kathmandu to Muktinath Travel Routes:

• Kathmandu to Pokhara by road. Drive Duration is 7 hours.
• Pokhara to Jomsom by 18-seater Twin Ottar Flight. Flight Journey is 20 mins.
• Jomsom to Muktinath by Jeep/Bus. Drive Duration is 1 hour.

• Kathmandu Airport Arrival.

Day 03: Fly to Jomsom, drive to Muktinath, and stay at Jomsom.

• Morning transfer to the domestic airport.
• Today is the test of our luck because of the weather dependable flight to Jomsom.
• Jomsom Airport is located across the giant mountains where the weather changes frequently.
• Flight delays and cancellation is very normal here.
• Hope there will not be any weather obstacles and we can fly as per the flight schedule.
• It takes 20 mins to reach Jomsom.
• The flight offers magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains.
• After landing, transfer to the hotel, 5 mins walk.
• Short rest and then, drive from Jomsom to Muktinath following the Kaligandaki River, 1:30 hrs drive.
• Arrival at Muktinath and walk 2 km up to the temple.
• If unable to walk then horses are available to ride.
• Take a holy bath under 108 water springs and 2 Kunda.
• Perform ritual activities at Muktinath Temple.
• Visit Mukteshwor Mahadev Temple, Vishnu Paduka, Swaminarayan Nilkath Varni Meditation Spot, Shree Guru Ramanujacharya Temple, Narshing Gompa, and Jwala Mai Temple.
• Then, back to Jomsom following the same route.
• Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 04: Fly back to Pokhara & Pokhara Sightseeing.

Hand-phone SIM card: Upon arrival in Kathmandu at the International Airport better known as “Tribhuvan International Airport”. After collecting your baggage there are two telephone companies known as “Ncell & NTC ( Nepal Telecommunication)”. They have a stall each. One passport size photo and a copy of the passport will be required then you can purchase a SIM. Activation time is 10 mins on an average. Cost is INR 150 per SIM which can be topped off as per requirement. It will be a 4G card. We are not in a position to take out the Sim in advance. Above is subject to change as per the Telecommunication Regulations The vehicle will not be at disposal but will perform its respective duties as per the itinerary only. (Point to point) Hotel Check-in Time: 1300 hrs Hotel Check-out Time: 1200 hrs Early Check-In will be subject to Availability Travel Documents Passports People from all countries except India require a valid passport to enter Nepal. An Indian national must have any of their documents like Valid Passport, Election Commission Card (Voter Id) with Photo or Identity Card issued by Embassy of India in Kathmandu if they are coming by Flight in Kathmandu but if they are coming by road/train they can come with an ID card which issue by the Indian Government. Visas An Indian national do not need a visa to enter into Nepal. Validity Various lengths of stay tourist visas can be purchased. If you want to obtain a visa on arrival, you will need to fill in a landing card, (most airlines provide these before landing in Kathmandu, if not, they will be available in the airport) pay a fee (cost differs depending on your length of stay) and provide a passport photo so don’t forget to bring one in your hand luggage to present to the immigration officers. Nepal Darshan Me and my wife, both senior citizens, while touring in Nepal, and in the middle of the tour, in the second week of March 2017, suddenly decided, on an impulse, to visit Muktinath Temple. We know that it is a risky one. We have to book air tickets to Jomsom from Pokhara and back, hotel accommodation at Jomsom, jeep journey from Jomsom to Temple and back, we contacted Well Nepal Travel&Trek, Kathmandu. Mr Ramesh Ghimire, the M D of the travels readily undertook the customised tour programme and made all arrangements including pick up from hotel. We reached the airport at Pokhara early in the morning to fly to Jomsom in the Simrik airways. Initially the weather was unfavourable. Permission was received at about 0710 hr to fly. The duration of flight journey is about 20 minutes. We travelled for about12 to 13 minutes in the air towards Jomsom. Then weather again turned bad and the pilot brought the plane back to Pokhara. We waited up to 1000 AM. Weather didn’t relent. Finally the flight was cancelled. We were, naturally, very much disappointed. Mr Ramesh told us that he would make arrangements for the next day. But as we did not have time, we expressed our inability. Mr Ramesh was truly professional. He promptly returned the advance amount we have paid to him deducting some irrecoverable expenses like taxes to the government etc. I have my full appreciation for him for organising our tour even at the last minute intimation and for refunding the money very promptly. Well Nepal Travel proved to be efficient and trustworthy. We may be unlucky. Better to have 3 or 4 days at our disposal to offset such flight cancellations. Not only this, I understand that frequent bandhs or strikes are prevalent these days in Nepal. So we should have some extra days with us. Nepal is a very beautiful country. People are friendly and curteous. BountIful nature. Love to visit Nepal once again.

Ramesh of Well Nepal Treks did an outstanding job of planning and executing our tour of Katmandu. The ladies really liked the Marigold leis upon arrival. I took the helicopter to Everest Base Camp while the rest of the party did the sight seeing flight. The guide arranged by Ramesh spoke excellent English and had a detailed knowledge of the history and culture of Katmandu and Nepal. Not only did we see the historical sites and interact with the local population but the day was arranged to flow smoothly so as not to wear us out. Awesome helicopter tour of Kathmandu and Everest Ramesh is an excellent tour organizer. We only had two days to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. I called several tour operators. Ramesh was the only one on time. He made good suggestions for our tours and quoted good prices.

First he organized afternoon visits to Bhaktapur and Patan. The driver was on time, friendly and professional. The car was clean and newish. Fun and interesting tours of ancient cities.

Later that evening we negotiated a helicopter tour for two of us of Everest base camp and Chitwan national park for the following morning. We had to haggle but finally got the price we wanted.

The helicopter tour was amazing. The pilot was top notch. The helicopter was in good shape. The flight took us to Lukla then to a spot near EBC, approx. 17,000′. We could not land at EBC due to safety restrictions imposed during this time of year. We made a couple stops along the way and had fantastic views.
