Amazon River Cruise: Memorable Journey

The Amazon is a river, and a region, of superlatives. It's the world's largest river when measured by volume. With 209,000 cubic meters (55 million gallons) of water flowing into the Pacific each second, it's five times the size of the Congo, the next largest river. The basin it drains is some 7 million square kilometers (2.7 million square miles), making it the largest drainage basin in the world. (By comparison, the contiguous United States is roughly 8 million square kilometers, or 3.1 million square miles.) What most impresses visitors to the Amazon, however, is rarely these numbers. Instead it's the area's cultural and natural riches and the experience of seeing the rain forest extend in every direction.

As you travel along the length of the Amazon, you'll call at villages that are not just geographically remote, but are far from contemporary culture as well. Some 400 indigenous peoples live in the Amazon, as they have for centuries. On the same journey, you can visit the 19th-century opera house at Manaus and the colonial-era churches in Santarém, Macapá and other cities. Biologically the basin is home to some 10 percent of all the world's known animal and plant species. From jaguars to macaws and pink dolphins to glass frogs, the Amazon is an area of astounding and unique biodiversity.

On board Aria Amazon, expect sumptuous and refined Peruvian cuisine orchestrated with native Amazonian ingredients. Renowned chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino presents a remarkable menu transforming seasonal produce from the rainforest into world-class dishes.

Since 2001, chef Schiaffino has been studying the food and cooking traditions of Amazonia, working beyond the kitchen with anthropologists and environmental scientists. Calling the rainforest his ‘natural habitat’, chef Schiaffino has cultivated a knack for skillfully incorporating sustainable produce and ingredients from the Peruvian Amazon into his cuisine. In fact, 70% of all ingredients used in chef Pedro’s dishes on board are sourced locally.

A born and bred Peruvian, chef Schiaffino is known for being one of the first culinarians in his country to put local cuisine on the international map. Renowned for his commitment to excellence, he has earned global recognition from The Diners Club World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy for his innovative Amazonia-influenced cuisine at MALABAR and ámaz in Lima.

Amazon River Cruises In Brazil

To cruise through the Amazon rainforest in Brazil is like hitting the reset button – prepare for all your senses to be switched on as you get to the pulsing heart of life on Earth. Brazil holds a vast 60% of this extraordinary jungle, and with so much of the majestic Amazon river to explore it is best navigated on one of our wonderful Brazil Amazon River cruises. Life in the Brazilian Amazon jungle is dictated by the low and high water seasons – the dry season revealing some stunning river beaches and enabling hikes past the rainforest’s giant trees, and the high water levels and flooded forest of the rainy season rendering the wilderness a lush and verdant labyrinth to meander by boat. Brimming with abundant wildlife and endless adventure, an Amazon cruise in Brazil is unforgettable.

Manaus is the starting point for most Brazil Amazon cruises. Itineraries range from 2 to 10 days in length, taking in such highlights as Lago Janauari Ecological Park, Anavilhanas Archipelago , Jaú National Park, and the famous Meeting of the Waters. Further downstream is the city of Santarém , is a lesser-visited but no less spectacular Amazon cruise embarkation point known as the ‘Pearl of the Tapajós’, with highlights such as Alter do Chão, with its Lago Verde (Green Lake) – a huge lagoon home to a myriad of animals explorable by canoe or stand-up paddleboard – and nearby picturesque white-sand island of Ilha do Amor (the Island of Love), which is especially striking in low water season from August to December.
