For those not wanting to go to KL, a shuttle bus may be provided to AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre 20 minutes away. This mall is large with over 160 stores.

How long does it take to get to Kuala Lumpur from Port Klang?

Taking a cruise to Malaysia is a fun and exciting way to arrive. You’ll get to see the many forested islands as you weave your way up the Malacca Strait and dock at Port Klang just south-west of Kuala Lumpur. And once you dock, there are a few things you can do and although I strongly suggest a day trip to Kuala Lumpur to get a real feel for Malaysia and its capital, I do recommend understanding the travel times to make sure the cruise doesn’t leave without you.

Depending on where you are going, it’s approximately 41 km from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur and only takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. If you choose to travel by taxi or bus, it may take a few minutes longer due to heavy traffic and road conditions.

You’ll begin your day trip at Port Klang. Port Klang is the closest dock to the capital city, Kuala Lumpur and is the 11th busiest transshipment port and the 17th busiest container port in the world.

There are three ports at Port Klang: Northport, Southpoint, and Westport. Southpoint is the original port with Northport and Westport coming much later. It was developed by the Malayan Railway and opened on 15 September 1901. At the time is was called Port Swettenham named after Sir Frank Athelstane Swettenham who had initiated a rail system between Klang and Kuala Lumpur. Before this, ships had a difficult time navigating through the jetty. So this new location at the mouth of the river was chosen.

Before the railway was put in, the trip from Klang to Kuala Lumpur was horse or buffalo-drawn wagons or boat ride along the Klang River to Damansara. This was a long and rather tedious journey and with the rising need to transport tin and other materials from KL, the railway was initiated.

Today, cruise ships normally dock at Port Klang Cruise Centre, however, there are sometimes exceptions. It’s best to check with the front desk onboard your ship to find out exactly where you will dock. When you get off the ship, first check in with The Port Klang Cruise Centre. There you will find everything you’ll need for your daytrip to Kuala Lumpur: currency exchange, wi-fi, taxi information desk, ATM, tourist information and souvenir shops.

The nearby town of Klang has a lot to offer. There are street markets, plenty of historical sites and beautiful temples to visit. Even the port itself has a number of shops and restaurants serving up local delicacies like steamed crayfish and salt-baked crab. An excursion to nearby Crab Island could be a great way to spend your time near Klang. Catch the ferry to Crab Island if you are looking for a tranquil day of fun and seafood.

Getting to Kuala Lumpur

The biggest destination for most tourists coming into Port Klang, is a day trip to Kuala Lumpur. It’s a bit of a journey and the trip getting there and back will take up some of your shore leave time, but in my opinion it’s well worth it. Kuala Lumpur has a unique blend of history and culture that you will surely not want to pass up.

Some cruise lines offer a shuttle service to Kuala Lumpur. Although convenient, I have heard from many tourists that it can get quite expensive at upwards of US$60 per person as of this writing. I cannot vouch for this price for every cruise line, so as always, best to check with the front desk on your ship. The biggest complaint about the shuttle service I have heard is that it does not stop at any of the sites. It merely picks you up and drops you off at the shopping mall.

If your cruise line doesn’t offer shuttle service, or you are looking for a less expensive way to enjoy Kuala Lumpur for the day there are three other options. train, bus or taxi/grab. All three will take about the same amount of time, it just depends on your exact destination. The Port Klang Cruise Center will be able to help you make the best decision.

When traveling to Kuala Lumpur, you have to keep in mind that even though it’s a tourist destination, it’s also a thriving metropolis and the capital of Malaysia. You’ll be well aware of this as you get closer to the city and see the high rises and skyscrapers. So taking into account the regular city traffic expects some delays now and again.

Usually, peak hours for traffic starting at 7 am and can last until 9:30 am, while in the evening it will start around 4:30 pm and can stay congested until after 8 pm. Lunch time can also get a little heavy, so best to keep track of the time and take these periods into account when making plans.

The roads are not always in the best of repair. They are bumpy and full of potholes. I’m not trying to dissuade you from taking the trip at all. I just want to give it to you straight so you know what to expect. Visiting Kuala Lumpur is worth a little traffic and discomfort for an hour.

Let’s take a look at the different choices and see how they compare.

The komuter KTM train station is about 13km from the port. You’ll have to hop a taxi to get there. The train is the least expensive way to go and you can find the timetables in the Cruise center. The issue is, when you get to Kuala Lumpur, to make sure you allow yourself enough time to get back to the station before your train departs to return to the port.

The train is a favorite simply because most of the sites to see are close to each other and on the train route. The coaches are comfortable, and air-conditioned and you can purchase tickets either at the ticket counter, online or at a ticketing vending machine. It will take you directly to the KL Sentral KTM station. It’s advised when coming back on the train from KL Sentral, to go ahead and get off in Klang (22km away) and take a taxi to the ship, since it will be difficult to find taxis at the Port Klang station.

The Jetbus runs from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur several times a day. Again the timetable and pickup information is available at the Cruise Center. The bus is not as luxurious as the train and can get caught in traffic, but they are air-conditioned and seat up to 25 people.

The areas you are most likely to get jammed up are Jalan Ampang, and Jalan Sultan Ismail ( these are in the vicinity of the Petronas twin tower). Also in the Bukit Bintang area where all the shopping malls are located.

Taxi/Shuttle

Some tourists choose to go this route for the simple fact that a hired van can shuttle you and your party through the different sites. They will stop where you want them to, and another benefit is, if you hire a driver for a round trip, they will know exactly where to pick you up and what time to return so that you can be assured to get back to the ship on time.

The official taxis have blue, red and/or white colors and they have a meter. They have 4 and 6-seater minivans available for the sightseeing tours.

Whatever option you choose, it’s advised to allow plenty of time to get back to your ship and avoid trying to cut it close. You won’t be able to see everything in one day, so leave some sights for next time if it’s starting to get late. There have been tourists who have missed their port call because of traffic. It’s a messy situation and requires them to get a hotel room for the night and make further arrangements with the cruise lines which could cost them more cash.

Is it easy to book a Grab car from the cruise center? I intend to visit the nearby township instead of KL.

Mark avatar

Hi Anthony,

Yes taking a Grab from the Cruise Terminal is easy. Klang has a lovely historic centre which can be easily explored on foot. You can direct your Grab to the Klang Train Station and start your journey there. If you start early in the morning you can visit Chong Kok Kopitiam for a traditional local breakfast.

Enjoy Klang!

Cruise Port Guide Port Klang – Malaysia: dock at Port Klang Cruise Centre

This is usually where cruise ships dock, although there is the occasional exception. Check with the front desk onboard of your cruise ship where they will dock in Port Klang. The Port Klang Cruise Centre has all the facilities you could ask for: currency exchange, wi-fi, taxi information desk, atm, tourist information and souvenirs shops. The location of the cruise terminal is not ideal though. You basically arrive in the middle of nowhere in a huge industrial port. Therefore the cruise line should offer a shuttle service, but this is not always the case. If your ship provides a shuttle they usually take you to Klang, which is the closest town to the Port. This is often not at an ideal location to get further afield. Check the details with your cruise line about the drop off location. If your ship does not offer a shuttle or if the shuttle does not go to a convenient location than a shore excursion or taxi would be the way to go. You can pre-arrange your excursion online or through the ship. You can also arrange a taxi through the taxi information desk inside the terminal upon arrival.

Taxis in Port Klang

The official taxis have a blue, red and/or white color and they have a meter. The taxi prices are listed in the terminal. Keep the following prices in mind:

Two ways to Kuala Lumpur from the cruise terminal including sightseeing for max. 4 people will cost you 85 US dollar / 250 RM.

One way to Klang (to for example the train station) is = 18 US dollar / 50 RM.

Public Transportation: ferry to Crab island and train to Kuala Lumpur

There is no public transportation available in the port. You could however take a taxi to the train station in Klang and pick up the train to Kuala Lumpur or the Batu Caves. You can also catch the ferry to Crab Island just down the road from the train station. The taxi to the train station should cost 18 US dollars one way. The train goes very frequent, it is incredibly cheap and reliable. Click HERE to see the train schedule from station Pel. Klang to KL Sentral and Batu Caves. KL tower

Getting up the Petronas towers requires some preparation so why not go up the KL tower instead and have that brilliant view over the Petronas tower and Kuala Lumpur. At the KL tower base there are lots of things to do, but most people come here to take the elevator up to the top of the tower. A view is not guaranteed and therefore it is wise to take the weather into consideration.

Petronas Twin Towers

This iconic building is the headquarters or the national oil and gas company Petronas. You have the opportunity to go up by elevator but it is wise to prebook those tickets because they are often sold out on the day of. North of the city you will find the Batu Caves. This is one of the most popular sites in the area. Lord Murugan guards stands at the start of the 272 steps that lead all the way up the caves. The cave was discovered by William Hornaday in 1878 and today it is still an important pilgrim site for Malaysian Hindu’s. You can reach the batu caves by taxi or simply take the train “Batu Caves”.

Most Singaporeans do not see Kuala Lumpur as a short getaway destination — the developed cityscapes simply remind us too much of home. Like, no one goes back to the CBD during weekends for the same reason. It is hence, to my surprise, just how much of a shopping and food paradise Kuala Lumpur and the nearby town of Port Klang are.

If you enjoy shopping and eating as much as I do, I’d like to re-introduce Port Klang & Kuala Lumpur to you. Besides being the birthplace of Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang also has a great variety of local foods that go easy on the wallet. Not to mention, 3 of the largest malls of Malaysia are also within an hour’s drive from Port Klang.

Here’s a list of MUST-EAT-SEE-DOs if you’re visiting Port Klang & Kuala Lumpur on a short trip. For us, we had 10 hours to spare during our 4D3N cruise from Singapore to Port Klang. If you’re here on a cruise too, read till the end for our itinerary, ideal for cruise-goers too.

aeon bukit tinggi mall - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

If you just wanna explore Port Klang and its proximity without travelling all the way to KL, there’s a shopping mall around the Port Klang area (20 mins drive). ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre is the largest ÆON (JUSCO) in Malaysia. It is definitely a one-stop mall for everything you’ll need if you’re ever missing something while on a cruise.

Address:  Persiaran Batu Nilam 1, Bandar Bukit Tinggi 2, 41200 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 10AM – 10PM daily

What to Eat in Port Klang – Kuala Lumpur

1) bak kut teh.

Ah her bak kut teh port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Port Klang is most famous for her Bak Kut Teh, and there are so many different Bak Kut Teh stores around Port Klang to satisfy your different cravings. Be it the Teochew clear soup version, or the Hokkien dark soy sauce version, or even the dry version — where the broth is simmered to a thick gravy.

We were recommended Ah Her & Samy Bak Kut Teh (亚火三美肉骨茶)  by our driver, stating that the “thick soup is very tasty” and has very tender meat. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try it for ourselves this time, but I’m sure I will the next time I visit Port Klang!

Address: 1, Jalan Lang, Taman Berkeley, 41150 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 8AM – 2PM daily

2) Chola Kitchen’s Nasi Briyani

chola kitchen briyani port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Port Klang is perhaps most famous for her Bak Kut Teh, but knowing Malaysia, good food is literally everywhere. So, we looked beyond Bak Kut Teh and went on to seek different cuisine to satisfy our bellies.

What we found good was the Nasi Briyani in Klang and  Chola Briyani is definitely the place to go. The Mix Briyani with Chicken + Mutton (RM19) is a good tummy stuffer, but if you’re looking for something lighter, we recommend the Aloo Gobi (RM12.70) or the Prawn Chukka (RM12.10). Vegetarian dishes available too.

Cost: RM4-23/dish Address: No., 33, Jalan Mahogani 5, Bandar Botanik, 41200 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia Opening Hours: 9:30AM – 10:30PM daily

3) Merchant’s Lane (美真林)

merchant's lane cafe - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

An hour’s drive from Port Klang, this Insta-worthy cafe in Kuala Lumpur sits on the second level of a plain-looking shophouse — blink and you’ll miss it, if not for the snaking line outside its doors before it even opens for business. Merchant Lane has both indoor and outdoor sitting, with the latter a more popular choice among youngsters; a vintagey garden & floral themed space where one can enjoy a cup of cappuccino feeling like a garden gnome Thumbelina amongst a forest of pastel greens.

Cost: Mains @ RM20-32/dish; Drinks @ RM8-17 Opening Hours:  11:30AM – 10PM (Weekdays), 9:30AM – 10PM (Weekends). Closed on Wednesdays Address: 150, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Our Port Klang Day Trip Itinerary — Ideal for Cruisers

9:30am: breakfast at merchant’s lane cafe (美真林).

Merchant's lane cafe kuala lumpur - Reasons to go on a cruise

We ordered an Earl Grey Latte that tastes as delightful as it looks. For mains, we ordered the Kaifan, Breakfast, and Hongkie Beef Stew. The diverse food variety from Western to Chinese, with cheekily christened dish names, really gave a lasting impression in an otherwise saturated-F&B industry.

11AM: Berjaya Times Square’s Indoor Theme Park

berjaya times square theme park - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Spanning three levels, the theme park not only has mild family-friendly rides but also thrilling rides that adrenaline junkies would love. We challenged each other to high-speed rides, a multiple-inverted coaster that spin 360°, and even bumper cars. We spent about an hour in the theme park while our shopaholic friends conquered the shopping areas within the mall.

1PM: Highest Vantage Point of KL on the Petronas Twin Towers

petronas twin towers - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

The Petronas Twin Towers is definitely the most iconic of all of Kuala Lumpur, and it is also there where one could get the best vantage point of the whole of KL. We got up to level 86 of the twin towers and got to view the capital of Malaysia from the highest point.

2:30PM: More Shopping at ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre

Aeon bukit tinggi port klang - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

Okay, the recurring theme for our Port Klang-KL day trip is “the biggest..” Well, no prizes for guessing where we went to next.. yup, the ÆON Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre — the biggest Aeon Mall in Malaysia.

Lavender bakery in aeon shopping mall - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

In ÆON, we headed to Lavender , a bakery famous for its dense bite-sized cheesecakes.  Besides Lavender, there are also many retailers from clothing to household. It definitely is the perfect last-minute shopping location, if you ever need more toiletries that is not available on the cruise, get them at ÆON!

4PM: Early Dinner at Chola Kitchen’s Briyani

chola kitchen briyani food - Port Klang Cruise Day trip guide

After a day’s of fun and shopping, our stomachs growled and called for food. We swung by Chola Kitchen, which was just opposite ÆON mall and had an early dinner. The Nasi Briyani was on point, so was the Aloo Gobi. Yumz!

We left at 5PM and made our way to Boustead Cruise Centre, calling it a day at Port Klang-KL. The car ride back takes about half an hour, but do factor in more time as the traffic conditions in both KL and Port Klang can be rough especially during peak hours.

With this Port Klang day trip guide, we hope to have shown you how to maximise a day when your cruise docks at Port Klang, so go on and explore~

This drab, industrial port is the access point to the capital of Kuala Lumpur (KL), an hour (if you are lucky) away by road. Most cruise ships use the Star cruises terminal at Pulau Indah, the terminal building relatively new and inviting. If the ferry is docked at the terminal, cruise ships will use the cargo terminal which is even further out.

The Terminal is equipped with state of the art facilities and amenities for the comfort of passengers and terminal users including air-conditioned buildings, link bridges for embarkation and disembarkation, covered walkways connecting wharfside and terminal, ATMs, foreign exchange counters, restaurants, souvenir and gift shops and duty free outlets. Ample parking space is also available for cars and buses besides counters for taxi service.

Monthly Climate Averages for Port Kelang Malaysia

Sightseeing:

Port Klang (Malay: Pelabuhan Kelang or Pelabuhan Klang) is the principal port in Selangor, a state of Malaysia. It also serves as the port for the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most developed region where the capital Kuala Lumpur is located. There is not much to see or do in Port Klang itself.

Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) is a mangrove covered island off the coast of Port Klang. The entire village on the island is built on stilts, making it an interesting day trip. How to get there: Take a ferry from the Pulau Ketam jetty beside (and not inside) the Passenger Cruise Terminal. There are about 15 trips a day and the journey takes about 30 minutes.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

If you want to go to Kuala Lumpur a cruise excursion might be the way to go, as traffic can be horrendous.

The Port Klang bus and taxi terminal is inconveniently located about 1km inland from the port area. One can walk the distance but the heat, noise and pollution may make it an unpleasant experience.

Taxis have fixed rates, posted in the terminal. Expect to pay over $85 for a sightseeing tour to Kuala Lumpur.

The railway station is located 13 km outside the port area. KTM Komuter, Klang Valley's commuter train network, links the station with Klang (20 minutes) and Kuala Lumpur (one hour 10 minutes) with trains once every 15 minutes during peak hours, and once every 20 minutes during off-peak hours. You will need a taxi to the train station. Expect to pay around $20 for the short taxi ride.

In Kuala Lumpur there is a Hop on/off Bus to show you the sights.

Nearby Places:

This port is mainly used to visit Kuala Lumpur .

Shopping and Food

A shuttle bus often is provided to AEON Bukit Tinggi Shopping center 20 minutes away. This mall is large with over 160 stores.

The Malaysian currency is the ringgit.

ATMs are widely available in cities, but do stock up on cash if heading out into the smaller islands or the jungle. Credit cards can be used in most shops, restaurants and hotels, although skimming can be a problem in dodgier outlets.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill.

Communication:

The sole official language of Malaysia is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia). English is also taught in schools and widely spoken in the cities although in rural areas a little Malay will come in handy.

Free wifi at the terminal on the first floor.

Broadband Internet is available in most hotels, cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, and some restaurants and cafes. Both cable broadband and wireless broadband (available in hot spots areas such as Starbucks and McDonald's) are available.

Emergency numbers All type of emergency 999; From mobile phone - 999 or 112

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In general shops open from 10.30am till 9.30pm in the large cities. They open and close for business earlier in the smaller towns and rural areas.

Essential Guide to the Puerto Plata Cruise Terminal

I ’ve been on over 20 cruises, and over that time, I’ve visited numerous Caribbean, Bahamian, American, and Canadian ports. But up until recently, I’d never had a cruise stop in the Dominican Republic. So, when I booked my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, I was excited to stop at the Puerto Plata cruise terminal on our Dominican Daze itinerary. Our cruise shopped at the new port in the area – the Taino Bay Port.

While I was only there for a day, I found Puerto Plata to be absolutely beautiful with delicious food and great people. I definitely want to return to spend more time in the areas I quickly saw.

Disclosure: I paid for my own trip and excursion in Puerto Plata. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Location of Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is located on the northern Atlantic Coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola (which is shared with Haiti). It’s west of Puerto Rico and south of Turks and Caicos.

The third largest city in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is located about 5 hours from the country’s capital Santo Domingo, and is on the north coast.

Unlike Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is not a US territory. Therefore, passports are required if you are flying in. You’ll need to check directly with your cruise line to see what form of ID they require. I always cruise with my passport just in case I have a medical emergency and need to be evacuated.

The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean hurricane belt. If you are cruising during hurricane season, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. There’s always a risk your cruise will be re-routed due to a storm.

If booking Puerto Plata excursions during your cruise, it’s a good idea to book them through the cruise line. That way, if they are canceled, you’ll be reimbursed.

Taino Bay Puerto Plata

Taino Bay Cruise Port is the newest cruise port I’ve ever visited – opening in December 2021 . It was originally the Puerto Plata cargo port and is located right in the center of the action. Many, but not all, of the cruise ships visiting Puerto Plata dock at the Taino Bay cruise port.

If you don’t want to book an excursion or leave the cruise port area, there’s still plenty to do right there. In fact, I’d recommend booking a later or early-ending cruise excursion so you have some time to explore the cruise port before sailing away.

Amenities and Activities at Taino Bay

Here’s some of what you’ll find right in the cruise port. Cruise travelers can spend the day in the Puerto Plata cruise port if you’d prefer not to leave.

A huge pool/lazy river: This is free for guests and a great option to cool off if you want to leave the ship but don’t plan to do a shore excursion in Puerto Plata. Some of the cruise staff on our ship were raving about the lazy river, but we didn’t have a chance to try it.

Shops: Want to do some souvenir shopping in Puerto Plata? The Puerto Plata cruise port offers several specialty shops including jewelry stores (where you’ll find Larimar, exclusive to the Dominican Republic), duty-free shops, souvenir shops, and clothing shops. These are all relatively small, but there’s a good selection of them.

Experiences: There are six aviaries scattered throughout the port. Exotic birds, including Macaw Parrots and the native Amazona Ventralis, can be found in these aviaries.

There’s also Monkey Island , located right in the port. In this hands-on experience, you can interact with and feed adorable squirrel monkeys. This is something you are typically able to just walk up to – you won’t need to book an excursion because you won’t be leaving the port.

Restaurants: If you’d like to get food and drinks off the ship, you won’t have to walk very far. There are several restaurants and bars in the Taino Bay cruise port, including a mojito bar, a rum bar, a coffee shop, and a Mexican restaurant.

WiFi, restrooms, and a last-minute excursion desk are also available at the Puerto Plata cruise port.

Things to See in Puerto Plata

Want to explore beyond the cruise port? There are lots of great things to see and do in Puerto Plata. Highlights include:

The Umbrella Street: An adorable, Instagram-friendly street with colorful umbrellas hanging above. In addition to being a great photo opportunity, there are shops and restaurants along the street.

Paseo Dona Blanca (Pink Street): Within walking distance of the umbrella street is the Paseo Dona Blanca (also known as the pink street). This is also an Instagram-friendly street that is entirely bright pink, with different installations that are great photo backdrops. Both Umbrella Street and the Pink Street are an easy walk from Central Park (Independence Square).

Macorix House of Rum: If you love rum, you’ll want to do the tour and tasting at the Macorix House of Rum. It includes a movie about rum making, a walk through the barrels, and a tasting of a bunch of different rum flavors. There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase your favorites at a great price.

Fortaleza San Felipe : As you sail into the Taino Bay cruise port, you’ll see the Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress.

Ocean World Adventure Park: An ocean park offering animal encounters, a beach, a restaurant, and more, Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers.

Puerto Plata Cable Car: If you want to see beautiful views of Puerto Plata from above, visit the Puerto Plata Cable Car. The ride will take you up to Mount Isabel de Torres, a National Park.

Playa Dorada : Want to visit the beach during your day in Puerto Plata? Playa Dorada (the golden beach), is a great option. This is the area where many of the Puerto Plata resorts are located.

Damajagua Waterfalls : This park, which is best via by cruise ship passengers via an excursion, offers 27 waterfalls (although excursions typically include visits to 12). You’ll be able to swim, jump, and more. Here’s one excursion that is well-rated .

Dominican Amber Museum : Puerto Plata is well-known for its beautiful amber. If you want to see it up close, you can visit the Puerto Plata Amber Museum .

Puerto Plata Shore Excursions

You’ll have lots of options for excursions in Puerto Plata if you decide to leave your cruise ship. Excursions will vary by availability and cruise line, but here are some options listed below.

Keep in mind that if you book an independent excursion not through the cruise line, it’s your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time. If you book the excursion through your cruise line, they will be responsible for making sure you get back.

Food Tour: During my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, we did a Puerto Plata tasting tour that I would highly recommend. We started at the Macorix House of Rum, where we were able to taste multiple varieties of rum.

We then headed to three popular restaurants – La Skina Restaurant, Mares Restaurant, and Casita Azul, to try some location cuisine. Before going back to the port, we stopped at the Pink Street and the Umbrella Street. It was led by a local guide and was an official cruise ship excursion.

Ziplining : Looking for a little more adventure? Some excursions go to the Wild Play Adventure Park where you’ll be able to zipline over the ocean and enjoy some time at the beach.

Beach Day : Want to visit the beach? One excursion on our sailing was to Coconut Cove Beach where sailors had the opportunity to enjoy drinks, lunch, and time at the beach. There was also a separate excursion to Fricolandia Beach Club.

Damajagua Waterfalls : There were a number of different excursions to Damajagua Waterfalls. One includes ziplining, swimming, sliding, and a ride in a buggy. There’s also one that includes off-roading.

You’ll probably find a number of other excursions during your visit to Puerto Plata. Think about the type of experience you’d want to have and find a well-reviewed excursion that fits. If you aren’t sure, a guided city tour of Puerto Plata is always a good idea so you can get an overview of the area.

Amber Cove Puerto Plata Port

I mentioned above that many cruise ships dock at the new-ish Taino Bay cruise port. However, there are more than one cruise ship terminals – some ships dock at the Amber Cove cruise port. Opened in 2015, the Amber Cove cruise center was developed privately by Carnival Cruise Line.

Amber Cove is sort of a combination between a port and a private destination. There’s lots to do within the port , including a water park area, shopping, watersports, and more. Excursions are also an option, if you’d like to explore beyond the Amber Cove cruise port immediate area.

Frequently Asked Questions

During our food tour, we had the opportunity to try bandera dominicana (translated to Dominican Flag), a dish that includes fried plantains, rice and beans, chicken, and some fruit. We also had a delicious soup with rice.

Popular drinks include the local mamajuana – a drink made with rum, honey, and wine, as well as local rum.

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso. US dollars are typically accepted, which makes it easy for a quick cruise port stop. Credit cards are accepted in some locations.

Seattle drivers clash with independent 'hustlers' for cruise passenger fares

by Joel Moreno, KOMO News Reporter

This photo shows a cruise ship at the Port of Seattle on June 18, 2024. Drivers who pick up passengers at Seattle's cruise ship terminal say they are being cheated out of fares by independent contractors who don't follow the rules. (KOMO News)

SEATTLE — Drivers-for-hire say their passengers are being lured away at the Seattle cruise ship terminal by independent contractors who offer discount rides but lack the proper insurance or credentials.

Cruise ships tie up six days a week during the summer season and as people try to reach their hotels or event he airport, the competition for customers can turn cut-throat. Lovish Kalia works for Uber Black SUV and Black Lane, and said his business is routinely undercut by what he terms as “hustlers.”

“We are losing business due to these hustlers,” Kalia said.

When passengers get off the cruise ship, they will start walking with their luggage down Terminal 91 to where their pre-scheduled ride-share driver will pick them up. These drivers will be waiting at the cell phone lot and it will take them a few minutes to get into place once they get the call that their client is ready to go, Kalia said.

RELATED | Port of Seattle expects record outcomes for local economy as cruise season begins

But other drivers who are acting independently will pre-emptively drive into the terminal’s pick-up zone, sometimes claiming to have a fare lined up, and once in place will try and lure these passengers away, Kalia said.

“In the meantime there is a hustler over there. They say, 'You booked ride from Uber, you booked your ride from Lyft? They charge you more. We can drop you with $60,’” Kalia said. “When we are able to reach over there, the rider cancels the ride."

Sometimes customers even get duped, according to Esa Tecle, a driver for Seattle Black Limo. He gave an example where uncredentialled drivers will inflate the cost of the fare once they reach the destination.

“Once they get to the airport, then they are like 'Give me $300,' and might hold the luggage hostage until its paid," Tecle said.

Tecle said there is a lot of disrespect shown at the terminal, and sometimes drivers even get hassled by the terminal workers.

“It's getting bad to where they will make us go back around even though our customers are standing right there, and then we end up losing our clients,” Tecle said. “They are not helping anyone by making it difficult for us."

Kalia said he has high overhead costs, including commercial insurance, a limo license, and vehicle inspections that these other independent drivers don’t bother with, yet they are taking away his clients and causing him to lose money.

Perry Cooper, a spokesperson for the Port of Seattle, said Uber and Lyft drivers have a specific area where they are supposed to wait to get passengers, and drivers are supposed to have a scheduled ride to be allowed into this area. Cooper said efforts are taken to monitor this area, and citations have been written, but they don’t see everything that occurs.

The port contracts this work out to inspectors with Seattle’s Regulatory Compliance and Consumer Protection Department, and those inspectors do compliance checks and issue citations when appropriate, according to a spokesperson.

“Any time we receive a complaint, a complainant will be contacted for additional information, and an investigation takes place. Unlicensed operations could result in a notice of violation per SMC 6.311 and face penalties,” the spokesperson wrote in an email. “Our advice to customers is to only take taxi trips or pre-arranged transportation with licensed transportation network companies (TNC) or limousine operators. The Port manages Pier 91 and has specific locations for each. Do not accept solicitations, non-pre-arranged trips, and ‘hails’ are only allowed with taxis. Customers can also ask a driver to present their current license or permit.”
