Tour de France

  • Giro d Italia
  • Date: June 29th, 2024
  • Location: Start in Florence, Italy – finish in Nice, France
  • Prize pool: 2,3 million euros
  • 2023 Winner: Jonas Vingergaard (Jumbo-Visma/NED)

The tour is divided into 21 stages:

  • 6 flat stages.
  • 7 hilly stages.
  • 6 mountain stages with 5 summit finishes (La super Planche des Belles Filles, Col du Granon, Alpe d’Huez, Peyragudes, Hautacam).
  • 2 individual time trial stages.
  • 2 rest days.
  • 1 transfer day.

The time trials, which has first implemented in 1934, is also known as the “prologue”. This decides who gets to wear yellow on opening day.

These are usually two to three-time trials. Other notable stages include the Champs-Elysees, which is the final stage of the Tour de France.

Since 1975, this stage typically starts on the outskirts of Paris and is generally a more easygoing part of the race though there have been some hotly contested races here.

Tour de France Betting Odds

Cycling betting odds for the Tour de France can fluctuate and vary among different gambling services or bookmakers. These odds reflect the perceived likelihood of certain riders winning the General Classification.

Tour de France betting’s simplest form is the outrights. This is where you bet on who wins the Tour de France. This is available for most of the year though it can be taken off the board if any major changes occur. Closer to the race, usually during the week of, more Tour de France betting lines are opened. Choose wisely!

Team Classification Betting

These cycling betting markets include “Team Classification” which is where you bet on which team will win the Tour de France. Specifically, it is a prize given to the best team as awarded since 1930.

The calculations, as of 2011, are based on:

  • The times of the cycling team’s three best riders per stage.
  • Time bonuses
  • Penalties are ignored.

Young Rider Classification Betting

Betting on the “Young Rider Classification” is also popular. It is a secondary competition outside of the General Classification and began in 1975.

The leader of this classification wears a white jersey as opposed to the yellow jersey of the general category.

The requirements for this classification have changed through the years but generally refers to cyclists under the age of 26.

King of the Mountains Betting

The “King of the Mountains” is another award given to the best climbing specialist of the race. In the Tour de France, it is officially known as the Mountains classification.

Top 10 Betting

Last but not least, a top 10 finish is also a Tour de France betting market. Instead of betting on the outright winner, folks can bet on whether a cyclist will finish within the top-10 of the race. The odds will be much shorter here as there is a better chance of cashing this bet.

Understanding the Tour de France

The Tour de France is sport cycling’s biggest event . It is part of the three Grand Tours along with the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana and is comparable to the Indianapolis 500 of its motorsport counterpart. As such, Tour de France betting is very popular and Tour de France odds are widely available from the top online sportsbook.

The modern tour typically has 21 stages, one per day over 23 days (two rest days). Tour de France betting odds are available for many of these stages, such as the mass-start stages. These are categorized into “flat”, “hilly” or “mountain” stages. Time bonuses are generally awarded to the first three finishers in 10, six, and four seconds, respectively.

The climb of Alpe d’Huez is also one of the more prestigious mountain stages as it is challenging and inclement weather conditions have forced changes to this part.

Tour de France Betting Markets

  • Outright Winner (Yellow Jersey): The yellow jersey, aka the maillot jaune, is the iconic symbol of the overall leader in the Tour de France. It is sported by the cyclist with the lowest cumulative time in the general classification (GC). The highly sought-after jersey can change hands frequently throughout the duration of the three weeks.
  • Points Classification (Green Jersey): The green jersey, aka the maillot vert, is given to the leader of the points classification. Points can be accumulated in stage finishes based on finishing position and intermediate sprints during the stages. It’s usually won by sprinters or exceptional all-rounders.
  • King of the Mountains (Polka Dot Jersey): The polka dot jersey, aka the maillot à pois rouges, is given to the leader of the mountain's classification. It recognises the rider who excels in climbing and accumulating points on categorized climbs throughout the race.
  • Best Young Rider (White Jersey): The jersey is handed to the best performing under-23 rider at the Tour de France. In other words, the cyclist in this age category who has the quickest time.

Tour de France 2022 odds, field, predictions: Proven cycling expert locks in surprising picks, best bets

Sportsline's gene menez correctly predicted the winners of the yellow, green and white jerseys in the 2019 tour de france.

tour-de-france.jpg

A band of challengers will try to end Tadej Pogacar's reign in the world's most famous bike race when the 2022 Tour de France begins on Friday in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 23-year-old Pogacar has won the Tour the last two years but will need to fend off several rivals to win his third Tour. Those include the runners-up the last two years, Jonas Vingegaard ('21) and Primoz Roglic ('20), 2018 champion Geraint Thomas and Russian upstart Alexander Vlasov.

Pogacar is the -170 favorite (risk $170 to win $100) in the latest 2022 Tour de France odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Vingegaard is second in the odds at +450, while Roglic is +500. The Tour de France 2022 ends on July 24 with its traditional finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. With so many variables in the 2022 Tour de France, you'll want to see the latest 2022 Tour de France predictions from SportsLine senior writer Gene Menez .

A former reporter and associate editor for Sports Illustrated, where he covered an array of sports for almost 14 years, Menez has been obsessed with the Tour de France for almost four decades. He has been following the iconic three-week race since the mid-1980s when Greg LeMond was riding to three yellow jerseys. In 2019, Menez correctly predicted the winners of the yellow, green and white jerseys, and last year he nailed the winner of the white jersey.

Menez has analyzed the 2022 Tour de France favorites, route, and top contenders and has picked his top-three finishers for the yellow jersey, as well as the winners of the green jersey (best sprinter), polka dot jersey (best climber) and white jersey (best young rider). He's sharing all of his expert Tour de France 2022 picks only at SportsLine .

Top 2022 Tour de France picks

One shocker: After studying the route and the results of the contenders in the race, Menez has landed on Fabio Jakobsen (+550) taking home the green jersey even though he is not the betting favorite. (Wout van Aert is, at -140.) Jakobsen has been the best and most consistent sprinter in the world this year, with 10 victories. He also has won the green jersey in three stage races this year: Valencia, Algarve and Hungary.

Menez prefers Jakobsen over van Aert because the latter will likely be asked to help teammates Vingegaard and Roglic in the mountain stages, which could take a lot of starch out of his legs. On the other hand, Jakobsen's team will dedicate all of its resources to Jakobsen's green jersey quest. "I'll gladly take +550 on the fastest man in the race," he says.

How to make 2022 Tour de France picks

Menez's pick to win the Tour de France is a rider who "is in terrific form." He's also is high on a "strong climber" at "nice odds" to win the King of the Mountains jersey. He is sharing all of his 2022 Tour de France picks only on SportsLine .

So which rider wins the Tour de France 2022? Who finishes on the podium? And who captures the green, polka dot and white jerseys? See the 2022 Tour de France odds below and  visit SportsLine to see Menez's detailed Tour de France expert picks , all from the SportsLine senior writer who has been intensely following the sport for more than three decades.

Here Are the Betting Odds for the 2024 Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar is the big favorite, but the sportsbooks project a host of other riders could challenge for that top spot.

cycling fra tdf2023 stage21

Going into Grand Tour season, it seemed pretty cut-and-dry: Jonas Vingegaard would be racing for his third straight Tour de France title. Tadej Pogačar would be trying to unseat him and win his third Tour in five years.

Right alongside them would be four-time Grand Tour winner Primož Roglič who, with a new team in BORA-hansgrohe, would try to capture his first Tour de France title, a race he nearly won in 2020.

Of course, there would be a few outsiders scratching at the gate, with riders like Carlos Rodriguez, Matteo Jorgenson, and Remco Evenepoel being given an outside shot to shock the cycling world and unseat the Tour’s two-headed monster of Jonas and Tadej.

Then the spring happened and a handful of ultra-violent wrecks threw everything into complete upheaval. Meanwhile, Pogačar dominated the Giro d’Italia, leaving many to wonder whether he burned too many matches and didn’t leave enough in the tank for the Tour.

But now, as we’re a little more than a week away from the Grand Départ in Florence and a few hours removed from Visma-Lease a Bike announcing Vingegaard will, in fact, race in the Tour, we have a slightly less murky picture of what we might expect.

Of course, given Vingegaard’s recent injuries and Pogačar’s recent Grand Tour victory, it’s still less clear than it has been in years past.

And so, we turn to Vegas, whose odds are often the best indicator of what to expect in a coming sporting event. After all, they have a lot of money riding on these events, so it’s in their best interests to get it right.

We checked out the current (as of Monday, June 24) betting odds at three of America’s biggest online sportsbooks, to see who they thought might win the Tour de France.

2024 Tour de France Betting Odds

  • Tadej Pogačar -240
  • Jonas Vingegaard +220
  • Primož Roglič +750
  • Matteo Jorgenson +1800
  • Remco Evenepoel and Carlos Rodriguez both at +2000
  • Tadej Pogačar -190
  • Jonas Vingegaard +200
  • Primož Roglič +900
  • Remco Evenepoel +1400
  • Adam Yates +2800
  • Carlos Rodriguez and Juan Ayuso both at +3000
  • Tadej Pogačar -160
  • Primož Roglič +800
  • Carlos Rodriguez and Juan Ayuso both at +3300

So, what does this mean?

It means that FanDuel gives Tadej Pogačar more than a 70 percent chance to win this year’s Tour de France, as a moneyline of -240 translates to an implied probability of 70.6 percent. On the other side, Vingegaard has an implied probability of 31.3 percent. Meanwhile, Roglič’s implied probability is 11.8 percent and Jorgenson is at 5.3 percent with Evenepoel and Ayuso at 4.8 percent.

According to DraftKings and BetMGM, the race is shaping up to be a bit closer. DraftKings gives Pogačar a 65.5 percent chance to win, while it’s even lower on BetMGM with Pogačar having a 61.5 percent to win the Tour.

These odds are subject to change as the race goes on, especially if the race starts and Vingegaard shows great form. In that case, we might see the odds creep closer to last year’s , when the race was a virtual toss-up.

Of course, if Pogačar puts a vice grip on the race early, as he did in the Giro, the odds will only get worse for everyone else.
