Amtrak Pacific Surfliner

The best train rides in the USA for seriously gorgeous views

From coastal routes to journeys through the mountains, these train rides spotlight all of America's most stunning scenery.

Clara Hogan

From redwood groves to sprawling desert landscapes to miles of picturesque countryside, America has no shortage of stunning scenery across its 50 states. One of the best ways to take in all the beauty is by hopping aboard a train.

While a road trip through America is always a great choice to see the country's sights, we'd argue train travel is even better. Not only is riding  on a train a timeless experience with notes of romance and nostalgia, but there's no airport stress or need to be at attention behind the wheel. Instead,  you can sit back, relax and simply stare out the window as you take it all in.

Below, you'll find the best and most scenic train rides across the country. On the West Coast, take in ocean views aboard the Coast Starlight (from Los Angeles to Seattle ) or the Surfliner, which hugs the California coast for miles. On the East Coast, the Mount Washington Cog Railway takes you through the Mount Washington area in New Hampshire. Looking for something even more adventurous? Head to Alaska  to catch the Denali Star’s 350-mile trek from Fairbanks to Anchorage.

Whether you're looking for a multi-day adventure or a route that only lasts a few hours, these train rides won't disappoint.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best train rides in the USA

1.  rockies to the red rocks.

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Denver, CO to Moab, UT

Trip length: Two days

The first U.S. offering from luxury Canadian company Rocky Mountaineer, the ' Rockies to the Red Rocks ' trip takes passengers on a two-day ride from Denver to Moab—passing through stunning Rocky Mountains and southwest scenery along the way. Best of all? Passengers will witness all that gorgeous nature from the train's glass-dome top! That's right, we're talking about unobstructed views of some of the most gorgeous scenery in the USA . The 2024 season runs from April 14 through October 9.

2.  Coast Starlight

Coast Starlight

Los Angeles, CA to Seattle, WA

Trip length: 36 hours

Traveling by train instead puts a spin on the classic left-coast road trip. The advantages? There are zero wrong-turn fights and way more photo ops. The 1,377-mile Coast Starlight route hits the best of the West: Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and more. On the 36-hour trip, bounce from your seat to the dining car and the 'sightseer lounge car,' where all the seats face the panoramic, floor-to-ceiling windows.

3.  Pacific Surfliner

Pacific Surfliner

San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA

Trip length: 8-9 hours

If you're looking for a train ride with ocean views, you can't beat Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner , which travels along a 351-mile route, many of the trip is directly along the California coast. The route starts out in San Diego before meandering up through Anaheim, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other stops before ending in San Luis Obispo in the central part of the state.

4.  The Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway

Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon, AZ

Trip length: 2 hours 15 minutes

Sure, you may have been to the Grand Canyon already, but have you ever admired Grand Canyon country by train? On The Grand Canyon Railway , you’ll depart from Williams, Arizona, and roll through pine forests and prairies, spotting pronghorn and bald eagles, before arriving two hours and 15 minutes later at the epic South Rim. All of the historic cars of the Grand Canyon Railway have fascinating former lives and some have glass-dome ceilings for unstoppable panoramas.

5.  The Empire Builder

The Empire Builder

Chicago, IL to Portland, OR

Trip length: 45–46 hours

There is only one word to describe this journey: epic. The Empire Builder runs daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, mirroring much of Lewis and Clark’s original expedition. It passes through a greatest-hits list of must-see sites, from the urban (St. Cloud and Minneapolis) to the great outdoors (big-sky country and Glacier National Park ). The trip totals 46 hours, which warrants booking at least a roomette with seats that convert to beds so you can fully stretch out once you’ve gotten your fill of landscapes under the moonlight.

6.  The Alaska Denali Star

The Alaska Denali Star

Anchorage, AK to Fairbanks, AK

Trip length: 12 hours

This 350-mile stretch through the heart of Alaska highlights the state's beautiful, rugged wilderness. Between the birch forests, rushing rivers, caribou- and bear-spotting, views of Mt. McKinley and a stint through Denali National Park, there’s a reason this is the Alaska Railroad ’s flagship sojourn. If you can swing it, splurge on a GoldStar upgrade and take in the spectacular scenery from an open-air viewing car, with absolutely nothing between you and the wild.

7.  Skunk Train

Skunk Train

Willits, CA

Trip length: 2 hours

Hopping aboard  Skunk Train  is like traveling back in time—this historic train has been traversing Mendocino County in California since 1885. Today, you can choose from a variety of routes and experiences. The most popular journey is Wolf Tree Turn. This 16-mile route will take you through old-growth redwood groves within Noyo River Canyon, over trestle bridges, and under tunnels, ending with a stop in Crowley, where you can take in the majesty of one of the oldest trees in the area, the Wolf Tree. Enjoy snacks and beverages (including alcoholic ones) before heading back toward Willits.

8.  The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Bryson City, NC

Trip length: 3.5 hours

It may be pint-size, but Bryson City, the departure point for this rail-riding adventure, is rich with local gems like barbecue joints, a soda fountain and a brewery. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has various routes, but the four-and-a-half-hour Nantahala Gorge excursion is a scenery-serving star, snaking along the forested Nantahala River and crossing the Fontana Lake by bridge. Foliage lovers, take note: The leaves here are breathtaking during the fall.

9.  The Mount Washington Cog Railway

The Mount Washington Cog Railway

Bretton Woods, NH

Trip length: 3 hours

Like the Little Engine That Could, this antique train chugs daily up Mount Washington , depositing its passengers at the 6,288-foot peak, the highest in the Northeast. A working museum of sorts (the track dates to 1852), the Cog has the elevated feel of a gondola, only you’re in a sturdy little train. At the top, take in the sweeping views of Canada and the Atlantic on a clear day.

10.  The Napa Valley Wine Train

The Napa Valley Wine Train

Napa Valley, CA

Trip length: 3 to 6 hours on average

On this California Wine Country track, you can get intoxicated by the scenery alone: picture-perfect wineries and hills carpeted in lush rows of vines. But you’ll have a little help, what with all the vino you’ll be sipping alongside your onboard multicourse meal—both lunch and dinner are options. The roving restaurant aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train comprises a collection of vintage Pullman railcars complete with mahogany panels and brass hardware. So go ahead and soak it all up—you’re not behind the wheel, after all.

11.  California Zephyr

California Zephyr

Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV

Trip length: 6 hours 45 minutes

At more than 2,400 miles long, the  California Zephyr —stretching from San Francisco to Chicago—is Amtrak's longest route. While we don't recommend you do the route in its entirety (unless that floats your boat), we highly recommend the route stretching from the Bay Area (hop on in San Francisco or Emeryville) to the Lake Tahoe area (get off in Reno or Truckee). This scenic journey is an ideal way to get to Tahoe, beat the traffic, and take in dreamy views.

12.  The Hawaiian Railway Society

The Hawaiian Railway Society

Trip length: 1.5 hours

Train travel takes a turn for the tropical on this 90-minute jaunt across Oahu in an old sugar-cane hauler traveling at the lickety-split speed of 15 miles an hour. The ride aboard the Hawaiian Railway Society shows you a rarely-seen version of Hawaii, filled with old sisal plantations and ghost towns. Time your trip for the second Sunday of the month and you can book a seat in the elegant 1900 parlor car that was the personal ride of Oahu Railway & Land Co. founder Mr. Dillingham. It's worth noting, however, that reservations are now required to ride the train.

13.  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango, CO to Silverton, CO

Trip length: 3.5 hours

One of the most scenic ways to experience one of the most scenic states; a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad isn’t merely photo fodder, but a full immersion into the wild, wild west. The train has been rolling between Durango and Silverton since 1882, when it was tasked with transporting silver and gold out of the San Juan Mountains. The 45.4-mile route runs in both directions along the Animas River, crisscrossing it five times, and passing by old stagecoach trails and long-deserted mining camps as it winds between 14,000ft high peaks.

14.  The Ethan Allen Express

The Ethan Allen Express

New York City, NY to Burlington, VT

Trip length: 7 hours 35 minutes

While the destination is a major draw, getting there is half the fun on this five-and-a-half-hour journey from New York City to Vermont. On the Ethan Allen Express , you’ll cruise through the postcard-perfect towns of New York’s Hudson Valley; hit Saratoga Springs, as famous for its horse races as its hot springs and snake around Vermont’s fittingly named Green Mountains, before landing in charming little-big city Rutland, with its historic downtown and one helluva farmers' market.

8 great rail journeys to take across the USA

Jan 29, 2024 • 6 min read

scenic train trips us

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely sightseeing experience.© Alex Potemkin/Getty Images

There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England ,  here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's  Amazing Train Journeys .

A white male passenger takes in the New Mexico desert landscape at sunset from the Amtrak train.

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes along a track through hilly terrain en route to Los Angeles

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

A train coming into a station in an idyllic leafy setting

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

A train passing through a green landscape with blue skies

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

The northbound Amtrak Downeaster at the train station in Brunswick as seen from the front

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

A locomotive decorated with the image of the road runner

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

A good first step to take when looking for a route that's right for you is to search Amtrak's "Browse by Region" menu. You can pick a large area of the country from which to start or finish your trip.

Once you click on an area, Amtrak will provide lists of highlighted long-distance routes, as well as shorter point-to-point trips. You can then select a route like the Capitol Corridor in California before being directed to ticket purchase menus.

Explore Amtrak Vacations

scenic train trips us

Amtrak offers curated vacation packages to rail travelers via its Amtrak Vacations website. These tours can include side trips (via bus) to national parks , sightseeing tours in cities and hotel lodging on stopovers along the route. You can search for packages around vacation themes like "Fall Foliage" and "Multiple National Parks."

Amtrak's set of "Most Scenic Journeys" vacation packages include trips lasting up to two weeks that combine rail travel and additional tours. Think of these trips like cruises with shore excursions . Some of the scenic journey-designated options focus on national parks, while others are big-city oriented.

You can click on each option's details to find itineraries, dates and prices. Then, all that's left to do is book your rail vacation.

Consider famous routes

scenic train trips us

A shortcut to finding scenic cross-country rail routes on Amtrak is to visit its Amtrak Vacations website and click on "Famous Rail Routes." This set of approximately 20 different overnight train routes gives you a great set of suggestions for your own potential cross-country journeys.

For more details on the fixed routes, click on any of the tabs. Once you've chosen a route, you can either book a package tour with Amtrak Vacations or go to the regular Amtrak website and book a point-to-point trip.

Weigh your accommodation options

Taking an overnight or a multiday train trip means you'll need to sleep aboard the train. All of Amtrak's long-distance train trips provide a variety of seating and room arrangments.

The cheapest way to travel is to simply book a seat on the route. While Amtrak's seating is comfortable, with more legroom than you'll find in an airline's business class, it may not be the way you want to travel for many hours. You can get up, walk the train and stop in the cafe car, but this can still be a tough way to travel during a multiday journey.

Fortunately, Amtrak provides several classes of accommodations on cross-country trips, ranging from shared roomettes with fold-out bunks to bedrooms, larger family bedrooms and suites complete with private bathrooms and showers. Should you book one of these rooms on a cross-country itinerary, you'll enjoy access to a separate dining car.

Prices for the various ticket classes vary widely between routes and dates, so check potential itineraries to find the best option for you.

4 scenic train trips to take in the US

Now that you know the basics when it comes to picking a long-distance train route, you'll want to narrow down your options. Although there are many scenic routes in the U.S., here are our four favorites.

California Zephyr: San Francisco to Chicago

scenic train trips us

Amtrak's California Zephyr route travels between San Francisco and Chicago on a three-day journey. The 51-hour trip (on the west-to-east path) begins in nearby Emeryville, California, then travels through central California farmlands up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Along this part of the route, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramas from glassed-in viewing cars.

The train continues through Reno and the Nevada deserts into Salt Lake City before traveling up into the Rocky Mountains to reach Denver . You'll descend into the wide-open plains of Nebraska and eventually wind your way into the Windy City.

This trip is a great way to immerse yourself in the American West, as you'll get a true feeling of the vastness of the region and the variety of terrain that makes up the country.

One-way prices start at $141 per person for a seat in coach and $688 for a room.

Empire Builder: Seattle to Chicago

scenic train trips us

The Empire Builder train route connects Chicago and Seattle on a 46-hour journey connecting the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The train loosely follows the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, the route the explorers took to map out the region acquired during the Louisiana Purchase.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would have appreciated sitting back in the train's viewing cars to enjoy eyefuls of Montana 's Big Sky Country, Glacier National Park , the Cascade Range and the vast plains of North Dakota. Additionally, the explorers would have marveled at the metalwork of North Dakota's towering Gassman Coulee Trestle bridge.

Should you wish to depart or arrive in Portland, Oregon, instead of Seattle, know that there's an alternate route of the Empire Builder from this Pacific Northwest city, so you can plan your itinerary based on your preferences.

One-way train fares from Chicago to Seattle begin at $150 per person, while rooms cost at least $651.

Southwest Chief: Los Angeles to Chicago

scenic train trips us

Traverse the American Southwest on a southern route between Los Angeles and Chicago. The Southwest Chief route departs daily and takes roughly 40 hours to cross eight states.

For some of the journey, the train follows the classic American road trip thoroughfare of historic Route 66 . However, unlike its car-friendly neighbor, the train route offers views you won't find while driving the highway, as it winds on twisting tracks that travel through narrow red-rock canyon passages before offering wide-open vistas of mountains and deserts.

The train's main stops include Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Flagstaff, Arizona. You can also take advantage of excursions from the train when you purchase one of Amtrak's vacation packages. For example, you can visit the Grand Canyon (by train or bus) while the train is stopped in Williams, Arizona.

Even if you never leave the train, the views along the way are enough to create lasting memories.

Expect to pay at least $146 per person for a coach seat on this one-way route or a minimum of $899 for a room.

Crescent: New York City to New Orleans

scenic train trips us

See the American South on this 30-hour journey between New York City and New Orleans . Departing the urban landscape of the Big Apple, this route will take you through the Northeastern cityscapes of Philadelphia , Baltimore and Washington, D.C. , among other destinations.

Once it exits the urban corridor, the train winds through the countryside of Virginia and the Carolinas, offering stops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina. Then, it continues through the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi before reaching its final stop in New Orleans.

Tickets for this one-way route start at $139 for a seat in coach and $580 for a room.

Bottom line

Traveling by train across the U.S. gives you a unique perspective of the scale and scope of the American landscape. While it may be slower than flying across the country, rail travel gives you the opportunity to sit back and savor the journey, appreciating the changing views as the hours roll by.

The four scenic cross-country train trips highlighted here are only some of Amtrak's many long-distance journeys available to book. By exploring Amtrak's website, you can find many different rail journeys in nearly every part of the U.S. Best of all, most offer an array of seating options, so you can choose the ticket that best suits your travel preferences and budget.

The 32-mile track takes a little over two hours to complete, and natural and man-made attractions like Bernheim Forest and bourbon rickhouses are part of the scenery on the way to Limestone Springs. South Carolina Railroad Museum

South Carolina

The folks at South Carolina Railroad Museum like to say “Y’all aboard!,” and as the state’s only tourist railroad, they keep an action-packed calendar. Rides on the Rockton, Rion, and Western Railroad last about an hour and, rain or shine, keep to their schedule. Their summer train, the Blue Granite Express, is a nod to one of the area’s abundant natural resources and a recurring theme. During these Saturday runs, the locomotive passes through Greenbriar Cut, a section of granite hill carved out for the railroad. On the BBQ Dinner Train, open-air cars deliver riders to the Rion Crushed Stone office building for their meal. In this historic landmark, also made from granite, scrumptious South Carolina barbecue is served with all the usual sides and, of course, banana pudding. Don’t miss a visit to the museum to scope out its historic stationary cars and vintage artifacts.

Williams, Arizona to South Rim

Fancy yourself a Wild West adventurer but want a bit of comfort, too? The Grand Canyon Railway is just the thing. Following a historic route to the majestic spot, the Grand Canyon Railway is the ultimate train ride for fiery canyon views of one of the United States' — and the world's — most iconic landscape attractions.

Unless you want to catch a light blanket of snow across the canyon, which is beautiful in its own right, it's best to plan your train ride in the fall or spring when the weather is mild, promising stunning views of the impossibly deep and wide burnt orange canyons. The journey begins in Williams before arriving in South Rim, where you'll have a few hours to explore the historic village and dive into the region's fascinating heritage.

After some time in the village, it's time to head back to Williams. With about two hours of train travel between Williams and South Rim, plus the time spent in the historic village, the train ride easily takes up an entire day. For picturesque coastal scenes and sleepy seaside villages, hop on board the Cape Cod Railroad. Cruising around Cape Cod and loaded with history of the region's wildlife, salt marshes, glass industry, and unique coastal ecosystem, this itinerary promises — and delivers — plenty. We recommend the Cape Cod Canal narrated excursion that begins in Buzzards Bay and winds through stunning scenery with a stop in Sandwich, the oldest village on the Cape.

First-class tickets can be purchased for $40, with snacks and beverages available for purchase on board — don't miss the lobster roll on brioche, trust us. We recommend going in the summer when the surroundings are sunny and lush. Care for a pint? Opt for the Rails and Ales beer-tasting itinerary , where you can take in the stunning scenery while enjoying seasonal bites and local brews along the way for $75 a person. Be sure to plan in advance for the beer train as the schedule is limited, and it fills up fast.

For spectacular views, be sure to spend some time in the Sightseer Lounge onboard, and to break up the trip, stop for a day in Flagstaff for some outdoor fun and Native American pueblo sites before continuing on to the City of Angels. When beautiful train routes come to mind, it’s easy to picture the Trans-Mongolian barreling through blue-snow blizzards, Indian trains rolling by coconut groves, or Italian trains winding between the sun-kissed Cinque Terre. But the U.S is home to some of the world’s most scenic journeys too. Amtrak routes around the country offer spectacular views, giving passengers the chance to gaze at snow-capped mountains and forests in the northwest to sugarcane and bayous in the Deep South. Here are six of the most scenic Amtrak routes in the U.S.

Sunset Limited

Dating back to 1894, Amtrak’s oldest named train rolls out of New Orleans and takes passengers through the backs of Louisiana’s little towns so slowly you can see wrought-iron balconies wrapped in fern, residents washing trucks, and the remnants of Christmas bows hanging on local bakeries. After a leisurely day sailing past sun-dappled bayous, sugarcane, and wooden churches, this beast of a train picks up the pace through Texan scrubland where lone horsemen kick up dust, jackrabbits spring out of holes, and golden eagles soar against marble-blue skies. New Mexico’s giant cacti and purple sage flit past for a couple of hours before the train crosses into the state of Arizona, where the eponymous sunset awaits. Here the horizon burns, red and orange stripes fanning across the skies, before simmering to pink behind blackened mountains.

Coast Starlight Train Amtrak

Amtrak's Coast Starlight hugs the Pacific for part of the journey.

Coast Starlight

Departing Seattle just before 10 a.m., the Coast Starlight winds down the country’s western edge over night, passing through Portland and Sacramento before pulling into Los Angeles 35 hours later. With a glass of Kendall-Jackson chardonnay in hand, and a seat in the glass-walled sightseer lounge, passengers spend the first day thundering through evergreen forests and farmland with the snow-grazed head of Mount Saint Helens fading into the distance. But it’s the second day that steals the show as California shimmers into view. Early birds might feel the warmth of first light firing up Sacramento’s vineyards, and over a plate of French toast, catch a glimpse of the Pacific as it blazes into view. At around 3:15p.m., move to the back of the train as it approaches San Luis Obispo and watch as it takes a horseshoe curve before crossing the Stenner Creek trestle. On the final stretch, the train rolls by palm-silhouetted beaches and surfers taking advantage of the last light before a spectacular red sunset melts into the sea.

Amtrak Cascades

After a long post-covid hiatus, Amtrak Cascades has resumed its service from Vancouver, B.C., to Seattle, so passengers can yet again enjoy one of the most gorgeous coastal journeys in the country. Nothing feels more invigorating than boarding the sleek service at 6:30 a.m., coffee in hand, and sliding into a window seat in the Bistro Car to watch the morning mist lift off the water. Murky and dark, with bridges barely visible through the haze, the scene soon softens to peach and blue as the sun breaks through, warming the air to reveal inlets and bays that emerge then recede as the train curls down the coast. At times, it feels as though the train is free-wheeling across the ocean with nothing but water flanking it, and the occasional spray from waves in winter months. Rocky shores gather up against the tracks, and huge bald eagles perch on fences watching the train belt around fingers of green farmland that poke out unannounced. Passing piers, abandoned boats, and dog walkers waving up at the train, you’ll feel compelled to press your nose to the glass for the whole journey lest you miss even a moment of this extraordinary ride.

CaliforniaZephyrAmtrak

The California Zephyr traverses Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and California.

California Zephyr

Traveling 2,438 miles through seven states, the California Zephyr is the godfather of American trains. With daily departures from Chicago Union station, the superliner service rumbles through Illinois chasing mile after mile of golden-red corn fields before thudding over the Mississippi river into Iowa . Nebraska’s prairies slip by during the first night, and passengers wake to the smell of breakfast quesadillas as the train is pulling into Denver . Find a seat in the sightseer lounge for the ascent into the Rocky Mountains, red rock faces stacking up on all sides. The train curls into Colorado’s canyons where olive green bodies of water move quietly down to join rapids bouncing kayakers along the banks. By early evening you’ll emerge into Utah where soft light ignites buttes and mesas into flaming towers of rock, and the second night draws to a close just after Salt Lake City. Dawn breaks through pink clouds hanging above the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the last few hours take passengers through the deserts to California where the Zephyr eventually swings around the Bay Area past twinkling waters, before hissing to a halt in Emeryville.

Rocky Mountaineer

Empire Builder

Rising up and out of Illinois, the Empire Builder thunders across the northernmost states of Wisconsin , Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana, touching the tip of Idaho before arriving into Washington State, 46 hours and 45 stations later. One of the lesser-used routes, it’s also one of the most wild and beautiful. Best taken in peak summer, or deep mid-winter, the train crosses the Mississippi three times—sometimes frozen and layered with stacks of pink-hued snow—pulling into small towns furnished with a scattering of wooden houses and groups of naked trees. Galloping across sparse, open plains, the train passes swampy rock formations, deer lingering near the tracks, and Montana’s Glacier National Park . In summer expect to see teal-green lakes, frothing rivers, and the sun-kissed heads of the Cascade Mountains.

Cutting through the Mojave desert, the Southwest Chief is one of the most scenic Amtrak routes.

Southwest Chief

Those who enjoy the cross-country route from California to Chicago often fall into two camps: the Zephyr diehards or followers of the Southwest Chief , which begins its journey in Los Angeles rather than San Francisco . During a dinner of baked brie empanadas and flat iron steak, passengers can gaze out across the Mojave desert dotted with Joshua trees, before night draws in and the train speeds through the darkness into the brick-red deserts of Arizona. Rattling over bridges and canyons, the train eventually winds up into the nooks and crannies where wild ponies drink from pools, creeks curve among orchards, and tiny white chapels hide behind curtains of willow. Over the border into New Mexico you’ll spot scores of stags lying in golden grass, their antlers tuned in like antennae, and cows with orange ear-tags watching the train inch up the Santa Fe Trail and into Colorado for an evening of burnished rock and deep indigo slashes in dusk skies. The curse of darkness means that Kansas and Missouri slink by overnight, but there’s a full afternoon ahead for watching Illinois’s little towns sail by, splashed with brightly striped awnings, flower baskets, and perfect white steeples, before the train arrives in Chicago at around 3 p.m.

Corkscrewing up more than 600 feet and crossing four separate bridges, it’s an 1880s marvel of engineering preserved for guests to enjoy. The train goes both directions, and the trip lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. In the fall, this railway offers seasonal promotions like Autumnfest, which includes free beer samples from local breweries.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Colorado is the world’s highest and longest cog railroad. The three-hour round-trip journey culminates at the 14,115-foot peak of “America's Mountain.” At the top, be sure to grab one of the famously fresh doughnuts at Pikes Peak Summit House and admire the 360-degree views.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Departing from Blue Ridge, Georgia, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs for 13 miles through woodland and along the Toccoa River to the Tennessee state line. You can choose between traditional closed cars with large picture windows and open-air cars, the latter letting you breathe in crisp mountain air while you admire the autumn colors.

The trip takes an hour to get from the historic downtown starting point to the border towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Book the "layover" option if you want to hop off to explore the area, or the express version if you want to stay on the train for a quick return.

This rail line is also one of the country's highest, topping out at 10,015 feet on Cumbres Pass. The train snakes 64 miles from Antonito, Colorado, to Chama, New Mexico, and passengers can opt for a full-day round-trip journey along the whole line or a "half limited" voyage, which travels out and back from either terminus to the midpoint station in Osier, Colorado. With the leaves transforming the landscape into a show of spectacular reds, golds, and oranges, this ride is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the country come autumn.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Book a ticket in one of the line's "Dome Cars" for windows that stretch from floor to ceiling — perfect for uninterrupted foliage viewing.

Amtrak Cascades

Amtrak’s Cascades route weaves through some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful landscapes — made even more beautiful with the changing forest foliage. Admire the rich golden hues of Oregon’s aspen trees or the vibrant shades set against the snowy peaks of Washington's Olympic Mountains. If you ride the line to its northern endpoint in Vancouver , you can find a variety of fun fall activities, like a leaf-peeping walk through Queen Elizabeth Park and VanDusen Botanical Garden or a Grouse Mountain gondola ride to get a bird's-eye view of spectacular foliage.

Virginia & Truckee Railway

Departing from Chicago, riders cross the mighty Mississippi near the Twin Cities, traverse the North Dakota plains, and pass through Montana’s Big Sky Country by way of Glacier National Park. In Spokane, you can choose between two options for the final leg of your trip: a northern route ending in Seattle or a more southerly journey to Portland .

Conway Scenic Railroad

Courtesy of Conway Scenic Railroad

When it comes to fall train trips in New Hampshire, the choice is typically between The Mount Washington Cog Railway and Conway Scenic Railroad , the latter traversing the valley and beautiful Crawford Notch rather than climbing to the peak of Mount Washington. The land rises on both sides of this fabled pass, so you're treated to foliage views stacked up to the sky wherever you're seated. The 50- to 60-mile Mountaineer excursion features 1950s-era passenger cars and three classes, the most luxurious offering upper dome seating for a better vantage point. The ride can take anywhere from four to five and a half hours.

The Hogwarts Express. The Polar Express. Thomas the Tank Engine. Fictional though they are, these and other scenic train rides often inspire kids to dream about train vacations. And while real-life train trips might not take you to that famous school for witchcraft and wizardry , Amtrak vacations and other North American scenic train rides can be just as magical for families.  “A rail vacation offers families an opportunity to unplug from their day-to-day routines, slow down, and reconnect with each other,” says Heather Leisman, President of  Vacations by Rail . Train vacations also allow  everyone  in the family an opportunity to see and appreciate the scenery while leaving driving to someone else. “Families can relax in their seat or private cabin, spread out in one of the lounge cars for a different perspective on the passing scenery, and enjoy delicious meals in the dining cars,” Leisman adds.

Tips for smooth train vacations in North America

Family enjoying an Amtrak vacation (Photo: Amtrak)

Use these tips to keep your train vacations running smoothly.

  • Make a travel packing checklist prior to departure of necessary items such as ID, prescription medications, and other travel essentials to make your scenic train rides as seamless as possible.
  • Don’t forget to bring along a favorite book , pack some family board games, and download movies or shows on your electronic device for longer rides.
  • Many railroads and stations offer complimentary luggage assistance that can be helpful to busy families when arriving or departing.
  • Part of the magic of train vacations is the iconic “choo-choo” sound. Kids love hearing train horns, and engineers love sounding them. Prep younger kids for the sound before they board for their trip. It will quickly become a fun game to listen for it.

Take One of These 12 Best Train Rides in the US

' src=

For those who subscribe to the adage “the journey matters more than the destination” and want to decrease their carbon footprint, train trips are the perfect vacations. In today’s post, we’ll look at the 12 best train rides in the USA.

Traveling by train may seem like a quaint, old-fashioned way to get from one point to another, but millions of Americans ride the train every year.

Passengers choose to take the train over cars or planes probably because of the more casual atmosphere, overall comfort, less environmental impact, and of course, the scenery that may not be viewable from any other mode of transportation.

The best time to travel by train is during the spring or fall; trains are likely crowded and fares go up during the summer and national holidays, while the shorter daylight times during winter decrease the chances to appreciate the scenery outside.

In today’s article, we enumerate the 12 best train rides in the USA.

Best Interstate Train Rides In The USA

The train routes I’m going to enumerate in this section are all Amtrak routes, simply because with more than 30 train routes in the US and Canada, traveling to more than 500 destinations in 46 contiguous states (except South Dakota and Wyoming), Amtrak is the clear choice.

Although these are described as one-way routes, you can generally purchase round-trip tickets, going back the same way.

1. Amtrak Cascades Train through the Pacific Northwest

Amtrak Cascades

2. Pacific Surfliner through Southern California

The Pacific Surfliner route goes along the coastline, serving up fantastic views of the ocean and endless beaches.

It follows almost the same route as the Pacific Coast Highway , but from a different vantage point.

Their trains have special racks for surfboards and bikes to accommodate those who want to get off at any of the coastal stops.

From the west coast, we head over to the east coast.

Amtrak’s Maple Leaf train travels from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to New York City, New York. Notable stops include Niagara Falls (though sadly, the majestic falls aren’t visible from the train), Syracuse, and Albany.

The gorgeous scenery includes the Hudson River, Lake Erie, New York’s wine country, and the incredible gorges of the Finger Lakes region, with lush orchards and vineyards in between.

It sounds grueling, and it is, but rest assure this is one of the best train rides in the USA you’ll ever take.

12 Unforgettable Train Trips You Can Take in America

There’s something truly magical about planning an entire trip hundreds and even thousands of miles solely by train. You don’t need to worry about filling up your tank, renting a car, or going through security to catch a flight. From the serene farmlands of Wisconsin on the Borealis Train to the stunning red rock vistas on the Rocky Mountaineer, American travel is easier than ever with so many railroad options that are scenic and offer a look into historical sites.

Here are some of my favorite and unforgettable train trips that you can take right now in America.

The Rocky Mountaineer

The Rocky Mountaineer's Moab to Denver route offers a spectacular journey through the heart of the American West, covering approximately 400 miles. This two-day trip begins in the red rock country of Moab, Utah, and ends in the mile-high city of Denver, Colorado. Moab is home to Arches National Park which has over 200 natural arches to explore and is one of the coolest National Parks in a state full of them.

What’s important to note is that the route maximizes daylight travel for optimal sightseeing. This means that the train doesn’t move overnight, and drops travelers off in the small town of Glenwood Springs, Colorado allowing travelers to rest and explore before continuing their adventure.

The Cardinal

The Cardinal runs between New York City and Chicago, Illinois, with a notable stop in Washington, DC. This route takes passengers through the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains, offering endless scenery for travelers to enjoy along the way.

Washington, DC cannot be skipped! Walking the National Mall and seeing the Lincoln Memorial should be on everyone’s bucket list. From (free) museums to local restaurants and bars, anyone can find something to enjoy in D.C.. World Pride next year will be held in Washington, DC from May 23 to June 8, attracting thousands from all over the world.

The Brightline

Florida’s iconic Brightline is a modern high-speed train that offers an efficient travel experience along the state’s eastern coast that once was only easily navigable by car. Currently, the route connects Miami to Orlando, with key stops in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, covering a distance of approximately 230 miles.

This service is a game-changer for both leisure and business travel. Brightline also emphasizes sustainability , using eco-friendly practices in construction and using biodiesel fuel, while also promoting a shift away from excessive car travel to reduce traffic congestion and environmental impact.

The Borealis Train

In May 2024, Amtrak unveiled the new Borealis Train route, connecting Chicago to the Twin Cities. It’s a great option to round out some city outings with endless views of nature from the train window. This scenic journey takes passengers through Central Wisconsin's rolling hills and farmland, with stops in Milwaukee to explore its art scene, music, and lively cultural festivals throughout the Summer. The route also passes through the Wisconsin Dells , renowned as the “Water Park Capital of the World."

The Hamilton County Harvest Train

Embark on a picturesque journey through Indiana’s Fall foliage aboard the Hamilton County Harvest Train . Departing from Forest Park in Noblesville, this nostalgic ride offers excellent vistas to admire that would be hard to see otherwise. Perfect for families, this trip also highlights the rich railroad history of the region.

The My Old Kentucky Dinner Train

The Bourbon Excursion (for those 21 and over) begins in Bardstown, one of America’s most charming small towns, renowned for its more than 11 bourbon distilleries. This ultimate bourbon experience continues aboard the luxurious My Old Kentucky Dinner Train . Passengers ride in two beautifully restored 1940s vintage dining cars, pulled by 1950s F-unit locomotives, through 32 miles of the stunning Central Kentucky countryside.

Taking in the views, guests enjoy a gourmet, seasonally-rotated four-course meal, paired with tastings of exclusive local bourbons hosted by a local master distiller, who also provides unique souvenirs. My Old Kentucky Dinner Train also offers a Murder Mystery Excursion and a North Pole Express during the holidays.

The California Zephyr

Experience one of Amtrak’s most beautiful routes with the California Zephyr , featuring dramatic changes in scenery from farmlands to mountain ranges and more. Marvel at landmarks like Denver's Rocky Mountains, the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas, and the red rock oasis of Utah. Comfort isn’t ignored on this long journey, with Amtrak’s spacious cars and extensive windows so you won’t miss a thing.

Onboard, passengers can enjoy full-service dining with meals that reflect the regions the train passes through. The journey covers 2,438 miles and lasts approximately 51 hours — which is why the bedroom suites really are the MVP!

The Empire Builder

The Empire Builder is a legendary route that stretches from Chicago, Illinois, to the Pacific Northwest, ending in either Seattle or Portland. It’s great for travelers who want to do a cross-country road trip without driving. Covering over 2,200 miles and traversing a diverse array of landscapes, this trip of a lifetime will show off the sprawling plains of North Dakota, the rugged beauty of Montana's Glacier National Park , and the rugged forests of the Pacific Northwest.

For history buffs, the route follows a path similar to that of the explorers Lewis and Clark, offering passengers a sense of adventure and history.

The Southwest Chief

The Southwest Chief train route spans from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California, covering approximately 2,265 miles. Passengers venture through the heart of the American Southwest, including the rolling prairies of the Midwest, the lonely deserts of New Mexico, and the stunning red rock canyons of Arizona.

Key stops along the way include Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff, each offering unique cultural and historical experiences that enrich the journey. These destinations invoke a strong sense of adventure that deems it a truly bucket list-worthy adventure!

The Coast Starlight

Often cited as one of the most scenic train trips in North America, the Coast Starlight includes breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, lush forests, and mountain ranges. Key stops include Santa Barbara, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Portland, offering a welcome mix of urban and natural attractions.

Known for its Sightseer Lounge Car with floor-to-ceiling windows, Amtrak’s service is hard to match. It’s sort of like hiking the PNW without needing to catch your breath! From start to stop, the trip typically takes about 35 hours, offering a thorough exploration of the beautiful West Coast.

The Vermonter

If you guessed that The Vermonter’s journey includes Vermont, you are correct! It travels from Washington, DC to St. Albans, Vermont, covering nearly 700 miles and amazing sights even excluding the gorgeous Green Mountain State. This scenic journey takes passengers through some of the most picturesque regions of the Northeast, including the rolling hills of Maryland, the historical streets of Philadelphia, New York City, and rural New England.

This adventure has an ideal balance of nature and city landscapes. The route meanders through the Green Mountains of Vermont where each season offers such a different yet equally beautiful sight to see. Pro tip — go while Fall foliage is at its most colorful.

The Pacific Surfliner

The Pacific Surfliner stretches along the California coast, running from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. You don’t need to keep “California Dreamin'” when this trip can be a reality. Covering nearly 350 miles, this journey offers passengers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and quaint coastal towns.

The route includes key stops in major cities such as Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Anaheim, providing access to a variety of attractions from beautiful beaches and world-class wineries to the amazing theme park Disneyland .
