Absolutely stunning live- was in the perfect small venue too making it so much more intimate. It was even better with the other 8 or so bands playing as support! I will without a doubt be going to see them live again.

The venue was great aswell as the bar. The staff were amazing and helpful. The magic gang was incredible and would do it again 100%. The ticket system was really good as it allowed my phone to be used. I would give the experiance a 10/10
Amazing band. So so tuneful. Every single track is every other band’s hit single. Great show. Their songs are full of joy; not an often found commodity. And three vocalists who have their own songs, all heart on the sleeve stuff with no cowardly irony!
The album sounds a bit too careful in the playing and recording, muting the effect, but the concert brings out how the songs can sound - forcefully joyous and uplifting.

The Magic Gang announce split and farewell shows
"We dedicated everything to the band and I’m so glad we did, because we got the world in return"
The Magic Gang have announced that they are splitting up and will be performing a trio of celebratory farewell shows this May.

After more than a decade together, the Brighton-formed band – Jack Kaye, Kris Smith, Gus Taylor and Paeris Giles – have “decided to call time” on the group to “spend some time exploring their own creative pursuits”.
“It’s clear to see how incredible the journey has been,” they said in a press statement.
The Magic Gang will perform three shows across May in Glasgow (21), Manchester (22) and London (23) to celebrate their time together and bid farewell to the band. Tickets go on sale Friday (January 26) at 9am GMT from here . An O2 pre-sale for the London date at Electric Ballroom also goes live Wednesday (January 24) at 9am GMT.

“This band started in 2013 in a bedroom in Kris’ parents house. I remember it was a sweltering hot day and me, Kris and Paeris were arguing over band names,” Kaye began of the band’s time together in a statement. “Kris wanted to start a band with around ten members, playing an array of percussive instruments and acoustic guitars. With this in mind, we settled on The Magic Gang and Paeris wrote it on the front of a kick drum to make it official.”
“We recorded our first song ‘Bruises’ in our shared house in Brighton. Gus happened to be home at the time and was drafted in to play bass. There was something truly magical about that recording; a lightning-in-a-bottle moment you take for granted when you first start a band.”

He continued: “A decade on (and some time after our most recent gig), it’s clear to see how incredible the journey has been. We’ve travelled the world and have had the opportunity to share our music with anyone who cared to listen (and some who didn’t). We dedicated everything to the band and I’m so glad we did, because we got the world in return.
“For now, we’ve decided to call time on The Magic Gang. This band has always been a sum of its parts – four songwriters working in collaboration and doing our best to honour each other’s ideas. The most natural thing now is for everyone in the band to spend some time exploring their own creative pursuits.”
Kaye concluded by assuring fans that they’ll be “hearing a lot more from all of us”, but for now The Magic Gang would like to “thank everyone who’s supported us over the years by playing a handful of extended shows”.
He said the band would be playing a lot of songs they haven’t performed in years, covering everything from ‘Bruises’ up to now.
The Magic Gang released their self-titled debut album in 2018, followed by their Northern Soul-influenced second record, ‘ Death Of The Party ’, in 2020.
NME described the latter as “timeless and genre-blurring”, adding: “This is an album that, despite its recognition of the downside of things, ends up as a more reassuring – and more real – listen than their debut. With its collage of genres and refusal to co-opt modern trends, album two finds the band moving towards something timeless”.

The Magic Gang live in Manchester: A magical farewell from the indie darlings
By The Mancunion
Article Summary
Written by Roxie Rees
In January of this year, The Magic Gang took to Instagram to announce their “Farewell Shows” tour in Glasgow, Manchester, and London. Their caption read: “We dedicated everything to the band and I’m so glad we did, because we got the world in return. For now, we’ve decided to call time on The Magic Gang.” On Wednesday May 22, The Magic Gang delivered a nostalgic and energetic performance at Manchester’s iconic New Century Hall for the very last time.
The Magic Gang are a British indie rock band formed in Brighton in 2013, consisting of Jack Kaye (vocals and guitar), Kristian Smith (vocals and guitar), Angus Taylor (bass guitar), and Paeris Giles (drums). Their 2018 debut album, The Magic Gang , earned them a reputation for catchy, melodic indie rock songs which helped them build a local following and eventually attract wider attention. In 2020 they released their follow-up, Death of a Party , which was praised for its eclectic influences and lyrical depth.
Having grown up in Brighton, I first saw The Magic Gang in January 2019 after the release of their first album in the basement of the Komedia – a venue with a capacity of only 415. This was the first live gig I attended with my friends and it holds a special place in my heart for igniting my passion for live music. Now, as a student at Manchester, seeing them at New Century Hall for their final show felt like things had come full circle. This venue, with its large school-hall-like stage and spacious dance floor under its disco ceiling, was perfect for this memorable night.
Country folk singer Alan Power opened the show, immediately showcasing his musical talent and Old Western style along with his four-piece band. Initially, he seemed an odd choice for support, but his incredible guitar solos, unique stage presence, and catchy melodies won everyone over instantly. His performance ended with an impressive cover of ‘Sultans of Swing’, as he lit up white sage with an old lighter and danced around the stage, prompting a crowd member to say, “I don’t know how they’re going to beat that.”
Pints in hand and dancing shoes now on, the crowd waited in anticipation before the lights dimmed and The Magic Gang walked on stage in suits, taking their places and kicking off with an animated performance of ‘Think’. Their rich harmonies and Kristian Smith’s lead vocals set a spirited tone for the night. After a few high-energy songs and an intense mosh pit, bassist Angus Taylor proclaimed, “Manchester, it’s always been you,” causing the crowd to erupt in a crowd of cheers.
Midway through the show, technical difficulties arose, with the band announcing they couldn’t hear themselves due to monitor issues, prompting them to ask the crowd to sing louder during ‘What Have You Got to Lose’ so they could keep up. Despite the challenges, the band’s performance was stellar, with Kristian remarking afterwards, “the show must go on.”
A highlight not just for me, but for the entire crowd was when Jack suggested, “If there’s going to be a song for you to go on someone’s shoulders, this is it,” before playing ‘Jasmine’. I rather unglamorously climbed on my friend’s shoulders, joining the sea of fans singing along – a truly special moment.
As the gig neared its end, they announced, “Manchester, we have a special guest for you… Stockport’s very own Tom Ogden !” The crowd went berserk as the band brought on the lead singer of Blossoms to assist them in singing ‘All That I Want Is You’. Ogden gave an exhilarating performance which was lapped up by the Mancunian crowd.
After exiting the stage and inevitably being called on for an encore, the band returned, expressing their gratitude for our support before giving us a heart-warming and rather fitting performance of ‘Life Without You’. This was followed by a nostalgic rendition of the Arthur theme song ‘Believe in Yourself’, which brought together a crowd of twenty-somethings together arm-in-arm as we all belted this song from our childhood.
The Magic Gang concluded their farewell show with the fan-favourite ‘How Can I Compete’, leaving everyone dancing and singing with smiles on their faces. Despite almost losing a shoe, it was exhilarating jumping around one last time to this song together. For the first time ever, I was actually grateful for Manchester’s trusty biblical rain as we left the venue. All in all, The Magic Gang delivered a bittersweet yet unforgettable final show.
