Computer/Technology Requirements

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have a Microsoft Windows 10 based desktop or laptop system that meets or exceeds the following general personal computer technology requirements:

  • A desktop or laptop system running on an updated Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.
  • Minimum 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB memory.
  • An integrated or peripheral video camera, microphone and speaker system.
  • Reliable internet connectivity with Broadband capabilities (a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps) is recommended.

Niagara College will not be able to provide support for systems different than the above specifications. Any provided software may not operate properly. Academic software for your courses (supported under the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system) will be made available for download and remote use. Access will also be provided to remote high performance computer labs if software downloads are not feasible.

Note: There is no support for Chromebooks or Apple products for this program. ( learn more )

The technology requirements indicate there is no support for Chromebooks or Apple products. Can I still take my program if I have a Macbook or Chromebook?

For most programs, the recommendation is to have a MS Windows 10 computer (as outlined in the "Computer/Technology Requirements" section on this page) for an optimal experience and for ease of downloading academic software. The reliability of remote connections to college computers and software cannot be guaranteed for Macbook and Chromebook users.

The Microsoft Office suite products that are available free to Niagara College students though Office 365 do have versions that work with Macbooks and Chromebooks, and the majority of internet-based applications will work as well. However, some program-specific software is designed to run on Windows 10, and the successful download of these applications cannot be guaranteed. Our Learning Management System (LMS) at Niagara College is Blackboard, and while students can access Blackboard through an internet browser, for some assignments and tests there is a layer of security that uses a proctored browser. The proctored browser will not function on Macbooks nor Chromebooks.

Students assume the risk of a compromised virtual experience if they choose to participate without the recommended technology.

Computer/technology requirements may be subject to change without notice.

Niagara College acknowledges that we are gathered on the shared traditional lands of the Anishinaabe (pronounced: ah-nish-naw-bay) and Haudenosaunee (pronounced: ho-deh-neh-show-nee). We offer our sincere gratitude to them as the stewards of this land, which is protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum agreement’s three principles: to take only what you need, leave enough for others, and always keep the dish clean. Today, many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities from across Turtle Island continue to live and work in this territory. Acknowledging the peoples whose territory we are on, and the agreements that guide their stewardship of the land, reminds us to reflect on and respect their unique relationship to this land. It also is an invitation for all of us to identify and engage in actions that respect and reinforce our commitments to Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Rights.

Admission method

The First Qualified/First Admitted (FQFA) process is used for the majority of Saskatchewan Polytechnic programs. When we determine that you meet the program's admission requirements, you will be offered admission based on the date you fully qualify for the program. The earlier you provide the appropriate documents and information that qualify you for admission to the next intake, the earlier you might begin your studies. Your application, once qualified, is always considered for the next intake.  Applicants to programs with multiple intakes in an academic year remain in the application pool until the last intake for that academic year has begun. Programs using the FQFA process receive applications year round and maintain an application pool for each academic year. Qualified applicants who are not offered a seat must reapply for the next academic year.  Sponsored programs or programs targeted to specific groups do not accept applications year round or maintain an application pool.

See  Admission Processes  for more information about this method of admission.

Credit credentials

A credit credential includes courses with post-secondary credit applied.

These credits will be used towards your specific program and may be accepted towards a credential at SAIT or a different post-secondary institution.

The credit credentials include a bachelor's degree, applied degree, diploma, certificate and post-diploma certificate.

Bachelor Degree

SAIT has bachelor's degree programs in business, construction, and hospitality and tourism management.

Bachelor's degrees are generally four-year programs, but you have up to 10 academic years to complete your courses.

Applied Degree

SAIT's full-time applied degree programs involve one year of study through classes and lab work followed by one year of directed studies in a workplace setting. This builds on the completion of a recognized two-year diploma, which you must have to be admitted to an applied degree program.

You then have seven academic years to finish your applied degree, starting from the day you begin the first course in that program.

At SAIT, over 40 full-time diploma programs cover a broad range of areas, from aircraft maintenance to travel and tourism.

Most diploma programs are completed in two years, though you can take up to seven academic years to complete the requirements.

Certificate

SAIT has several certificate programs in the sciences, health and trades.

These programs provide the essential skills to start a career but are shorter in length than SAIT's diploma programs - usually a year or less. However, you have up to five years to complete your program.

Post-Diploma Certificate

These programs build on skills developed through a diploma or degree program and combine classroom instruction with a workplace practicum.

They are often completed in a year or less.

Journeyperson

A certified journeyperson is recognized as a qualified and skilled person in a trade and is entitled to the wages and benefits associated with that trade. You must complete all apprenticeship periods and pass the exams to earn a journeyperson designation.

Non-credit credentials

A non-credit credential comprises courses and programs designed for professional or personal development.

Because these do not have post-secondary credits attached, they cannot be used towards any of the credentials above. We also cannot guarantee an external institute will accept these courses or credentials for transfer credit.

SAIT's non-credit certificates of achievement and completion are offered through Continuing Education and Professional Studies .

Certificate of Achievement

Certificates of achievement recognize the completion of a program that includes a formal evaluation of performance and a minimum of 144 (required and elective) course hours.

Certificates of achievement typically develop broader, complex skill sets. As of July 1, 2022, you have up to three years to complete the certificate. If you began these programs before July 1, 2022, you still have five calendar years to complete the program from when you began the first course.

Certificate of Completion

Certificates of completion recognize the completion of a program that includes a formal evaluation of performance and a minimum of 30 to a maximum of 143 course hours.

These certificates are shorter in duration than certificates of achievement and offer a focused education program. As of July 1, 2022, you have up to three years to complete the certificate. If you began before July 1, 2022, you will have five calendar years to complete the program from when you began the first course.

Professional Certificate

Program certificates recognize completion of a program that includes the formal evaluation of performance, and that is a minimum of one year in length.

These certificates have program-specific admission requirements.

Micro-credential

A micro-credential recognizes the completion of a non-credit course that includes a formal performance evaluation and verifies you have demonstrated specific competencies.

Micro-credentials focus on the mastery of specific skills. You receive a digital, shareable badge upon completing a SAIT micro-credential (SAITMicro).

Program length

Estimated program length if you study full-time (nine or more credits per semester.) Actual program length will vary based on the number of courses you are registered in and successfully complete per semester.

You must complete your credential within the timeframes listed below:

  • Applied degree: up to seven academic years to complete all courses.
  • Diploma: up to seven academic years to complete all courses.
  • Certificates: up to five academic years to complete all courses.

First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

Navigating the World of Hospitality: How Hospitality Management Shapes Global Travel

pg in hospitality and tourism management in canada

In the constantly shifting setting of international tourism and travel, the hospitality management industry is a cornerstone, delivering critical services that define the experiences of millions of travellers worldwide. As globalisation bridges gaps, the hotel industry is important in promoting cultural interchange, economic growth, and sustainable tourism. This blog examines the varied role of hospitality management in international tourism and travel, emphasising it’s importance, problems, and future developments.

Global Hospitality Market - WUC

The impact of Global Hospitality and Tourism

The hospitality sector and tourism both play essential roles in supporting and meeting one another’s needs. In the tourist business, their interaction is crucial, and for greater opportunities, those two sectors must collaborate closely with one another. A lot of recent changes and focus on the hotel sector have improved the tourism industry and opened job opportunities and foreign exchange transactions, making India the third-largest earner of foreign exchange. Owing to its overly broad spectrum of services, the hospitality industry boasts an enormous diversity of business ventures.

1. Economic Impact

A bustling city centre filled with tourists illustrates how each visitor contributes to the local economy by dining at restaurants, shopping at local stores, and staying in hotels. The hospitality industry is a major economic driver, generating employment opportunities, stimulating local businesses, and attracting foreign investment. A thriving hospitality sector can transform a destination into a bustling tourist hub, benefiting the entire community.

According to Statista, overall, the contribution of travel and tourism to the global GDP amounted to 9.9 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023. This figure was predicted to reach an estimated 11.1 trillion U.S. dollars in 2024, exceeding pre-pandemic levels.

2. Stimulating Other Industries

A rise in tourists benefits not only the hospitality industry but also stimulates other sectors such as food manufacturing, automotive services, and catering industries. Local farmers and food producers see increased demand for their products, automotive companies benefit from the need for transportation services, and catering businesses thrive by providing food and beverage services to events and gatherings.

The Interplay of Sectors in Tourism - WUC

3. Financial Reserves and Foreign Exchange

A nation’s financial reserves are strengthened when visitors from other countries bring in much-needed foreign currency. Significant foreign exchange profits can be generated year-round by a well-developed tourism industry. These profits help stabilize the national economy, providing funds for infrastructure development, social services, and other essential areas.

According to the UNWTO data, international visitor spending touched 64% of pre-pandemic levels (-36% in real terms against 2019). By region, Europe had the best returns in 2022, with approximately USD 550 billion in tourism revenues (EUR 520 billion), or 87% of pre-pandemic levels. Africa regained 75% of its pre-pandemic revenues, the Middle East 70%, and the Americas 68%.

4. Encouraging Direct Foreign Investment

The tourism sector also encourages direct foreign investment in popular tourist destinations. International investors are often drawn to areas with high tourist activity, leading to the development of new hotels, resorts, and entertainment facilities. This investment not only boosts the local economy but also enhances the destination’s appeal to future visitors.

5. Preserving Cultural Heritage

The tourism industry plays a crucial role in preserving a nation’s rich historical, artistic, and cultural features. Visitors from around the world are informed about the cultural and historical significance of major tourist destinations, raising awareness of the need to preserve them for future generations. Tourism revenue can be used to maintain and restore historical sites, museums, and cultural landmarks, ensuring they remain vibrant and accessible.

6. Creating Memorable Experiences

Imagine stepping off a long flight and being welcomed by a warm, friendly smile at the reception of your hotel. The room is impeccably clean, the bed is inviting, and there is a personalized note from the manager wishing you a pleasant stay. These small touches make a significant difference. Hospitality management professionals strive to create such memorable experiences, ensuring travellers feel valued and cared for, making their journeys truly unforgettable.

7. Cultural Ambassadors

Consider the concierge who not only provides you with a map but also shares stories about the local culture, recommends hidden gems to visit, and teaches you a few phrases in the local language. Hospitality workers often serve as the first point of contact for international tourists, acting as cultural ambassadors. They bridge cultural gaps, offering insights into local customs, traditions, and attractions, thereby enriching the travel experience, and fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Key trends driving the industry

As the industry continues to grow and evolve, hospitality professionals must navigate a complex landscape of diverse expectations, technological advancements, and sustainability challenges. By embracing innovation and prioritizing guest satisfaction, the hospitality sector can continue to thrive, making every journey a memorable and enriching experience. The essence of hospitality lies in its ability to make every traveller feel at home, no matter where they are in the world.

In 2021, the global hospitality industry was valued at around USD 3953 billion, and by 2028, it is expected to have grown to approximately USD 6716.3 billion, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 10.24% between 2022 and 2028, according to a Facts Factors analysis.

Global Hospitality Market 2030 - WUC

The industry’s future lies in sustainable practices, personalized experiences, and cultural stewardship. By embracing these roles, hospitality can thrive, enriching travellers’ journeys and contributing to global communities. In an interconnected world, hospitality ensures every traveller feels at home, no matter where they are. The path ahead is bright, with hospitality management shaping a vibrant future for international tourism , one memorable experience at a time.
