30 Most Anticipated Metal & Hard Rock Tours of 2024

A plethora of heavy music acts are hitting the road this year

30 Most Anticipated Metal & Hard Rock Tours of 2024

The concert industry is as busy as ever, and fans will have plenty of metal and hard rock tours to choose from in 2024 — with many more to be announced in the coming weeks and months.

No matter your taste in heavy music, there’s something for you in terms of upcoming shows. Classic metal fans can go out and see Metallica, Judas Priest, or Pantera, while those who listened to mainstream rock radio in the late ’90s and early 2000s can catch Godsmack, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, or a reunited Creed.

If punk rock is your thing, you’re covered with Green Day’s stadium tour or the likes of Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, and Flogging Molly. And industrial devotees can catch Ministry with support from Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly.

None of those acts extreme enough for you? Don’t worry, as Amon Amarth are heading out with Cannibal Corpse and Obituary, while Cattle Decapitation and Carnifex are teaming up for a co-headlining tour.

And if your definition of “heavy” casts a wide net, then there’s acts like Chelsea Wolfe, Sleep Token, and ††† (Crosses) to satisfy your eclectic taste in music.

Meanwhile, if you wanna end up leaving a show looking like you’ve been through a bloody battle, you can always check out a GWAR concert.

So, without further ado, below are 30 of the most anticipated metal & hard rock tours of 2024.

-Spencer Kaufman Managing Editor, Heavy Consequence

Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List

Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.

The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.

In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All   (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

Other set highlights included classic tracks like “The Memory Remains,” Fade to Black," “Nothing Else Matters” and "Master of Puppets." The Munich gig also featured the live debut of “Room of Mirrors,” an album cut from Metallica’s 2023 album 72 Seasons .

See pictures and the full set list from Metallica’s tour-opening concert below.

Testament Remastered

“The Legacy” + “The New Order” REMASTERED

Out on july 12th, 2024, order the legacy (remastered), order the new order (remastered), testament @ nuclear blast records.

metal band tour 2024

TESTAMENT is an undisputed titan of thrash metal. One of the definitive acts of the historic and high-octane genre since they first emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983, the modern icons established themselves with a series of classic records (released each year from 1987 through 1990). They never wavered creatively, unleashing one acclaimed album after another across four decades.

The band’s nearly 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone is a clear demonstration of the enduring strength of the  Testament  legions.  Testament’s biggest anthems run the gamut of their storied career, from early classics like “ Over the Wall ” and “ Into the Pit ,” late ‘90s bangers like “ Down for Life ,” through modern scorchers like “ For the Glory of… ” and “ Brotherhood of the Snake .”

An internationally recognized heavy metal institution,  Testament  regularly appears as a headlining mainstage act at major festivals. Over the years, they’ve toured alongside Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Korn, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Lamb Of God, among other contemporaries.

Charismatic frontman  Chuck Billy’s distinctive voice infuses their signature sound with rich and diverse textures. Primary songwriter and cofounding guitarist  Eric Peterson  summons endlessly timeless riffs on command.  Alex Skolnick , named one of the greatest of all time by Guitar World, was just 18 years old when  Testament  recorded their debut,  The Legacy  (1987). Longtime bassist  Steve Di Giorgio  (Sadus, Death, Obituary) brings rhythmic heft and fluid dexterity to the proceedings.

Drummer  Chris Dovas , the band’s newest (and youngest) addition, adds his own passionate bombast while honoring the astounding legacy of former  Testament  drummers. (An alumnus including past and present members of Slayer, White Zombie, Dethklok, and Machine Head, among others.)

Both  The Legacy  (1987) and  The New Order  (1988) were inducted into Decibel Magazine’s prestigious Hall Of Fame, alongside albums from Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Motörhead. Revolver included  The New Order  on their list of 14 Thrash Albums You Need to Own. Guitar World recognized  Practice What You Preach  (1989) as one of the Top 10 Shred Albums of the Eighties.  Souls of Black  (1990) entered the Billboard 200 at No. 73;  The Ritual  (1992) debuted at No. 55. Guitar World called  Low  (1994) one of the Iconic Albums That Defined 1994.  Demonic  (1997) and  The Gathering  (1999) saw  Testament  mining new depths of extremity without sacrificing their bluesy swagger.

The Formation of Damnation  (2008) won Best Album at Metal Hammer’s Golden Gods Awards, beating out records from Avenged Sevenfold, Children Of Bodom, Atreyu, and Down. Released nearly 30 years after the band’s formation,  Dark Roots of Earth  (2012) became their highest-charting album yet, moving more than 20,000 copies during its first week in the US and debuting at No. 12.

Brotherhood of the Snake  (2016) enjoyed another Top 20 debut and hit No. 1 on the Independent chart.  Titans of Creation  (2020) joined year-end lists in Consequence, Loudwire, and Metal Hammer.

As the band gears up for a fall 2024 co-headlining tour with Kreator dubbed Klash Of The Titans,  Testament  continues work on their next studio album, which promises to become another modern classic. During the tour, the band will perform an “old-school set” celebrating the forthcoming remastered reissues of their landmark first two albums,  The Legacy  and  The New Order .

The worldwide  Testament Legions only continues to grow with renewed fervor and passion as one of the definitive acts of modern heavy metal marches forward, never wavering and always crushing.

Do they songs from the ritual on the current tour and from practice what you preach

I wish AXS did VIP for SODO. Beyond excited to see you guys tonight in Seattle. Not everyday the true Kings of Thrash come to the neighborhood.

Chuck, Someday I may have to go to a show at the Agora in Cleveland and say what’s up to you. We met the night before you went to your first Bammy awards night at Rachel Moxleys house. You signed something for me to take to a friend. Ruben Brito got that and says to me how did you get this? I told him my wife’s friend knows him why? Ruben says man this dude is legendary. I said really he just seemed like a cool dude to me. Ruben said that was very cool. 30 plus years later you are still rocking it out. Who knows maybe someday Dan McNay will be up here too and we can all kick it. Take care and may you have continued success.

I was late for the meet and greet. Went to the wrong venue.

How special is that?

That’s so awesome guys💯🎸🎶🎵🔥

Awesome wish I could join you guys

Can’t wait for The Hollywood Palladium show!! 🤘🔥🖤🤘

In the mid-1980s, Denmark’s ARTILLERY established themselves as being at the cutting edge of the thrash movement. Four decades later, they continue to destroy. The band’s most recent studio offering – the aptly titled, X – was released in 2021 via Metal Blade Records. X was tracked in Medley Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark with producer Søren Andersen, who the band have worked with on every record since 2009′s When Death Comes . Wrote Blabbermouth upon its release, “ Nearly 40 years after their story began, this band is still a unique and exhilarating proposition. ” Distorted Sound noted, “ This is crisp and accessible, there are no unintelligible vocals and they know how to write a beefed-up metal song. This should please the pit and the guys at the back who prefer to sing along in equal measure. If you like the faster side of metal, you owe it to yourself to check this out .” Added Ghost Cult , “ Bursting with razor-sharp riffs, frantic shredding, and more hooks than a fisherman’s tackle box, X is another outstanding example of classic Danish thrash .”

Metal music has many layers. Here are the artists blowing up and making waves in different scenes across the globe.

Alternative Metal

Alternative metal has carved its own distinct path within the metal landscape, appealing to fans seeking a fusion of heavy and alternative sounds that pushes boundaries and explores new musical territories. It combines elements of heavy metal with alternative rock, incorporating influences from various subgenres such as grunge, industrial, and nu metal. Alternative metal bands often fuse heavy guitar riffs, aggressive vocals, and hard-hitting rhythms with melodic and introspective elements. The genre's versatility allows for a wide range of sonic expressions, from the melodic hooks of bands like Deftones and Tool to the intense energy of acts like Korn and System of a Down.

Foo Fighters

System of a down, the smashing pumpkins, heavy metal.

Characterized by its aggressive guitar riffs, pounding drums, and soaring vocals, heavy metal is known for its intense and energetic sound. With bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin paving the way, heavy metal evolved into a diverse genre with subgenres like thrash metal, power metal, and doom metal. Heavy metal has a dedicated global fanbase, drawn to its electrifying live performances, intricate musicianship, and unapologetic attitude. Whether it's the thunderous rhythms of bands like Metallica or the operatic grandeur of acts like Iron Maiden, heavy metal continues to captivate listeners with its raw power and passion.

Guns N' Roses

Ozzy osbourne, iron maiden, def leppard, thrash metal.

Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax pioneered the genre, pushing the boundaries of speed and intensity. Speed Metal

Speed metal bands such as Motorhead, Exciter, and Venom pushed the boundaries of speed and intensity, laying the foundation for future genres like thrash metal.

Dragonforce

Glam metal emphasized a party-oriented lifestyle, with lyrics often revolving around themes of love, sex, and living life to the fullest. The genre's sound incorporated catchy guitar riffs, melodic solos, and harmonized vocals, creating a radio-friendly appeal. Bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Bon Jovi epitomized the genre with their big hair, tight leather pants, and anthemic rock songs.

Mötley Crüe

Alice cooper, gothic rock.

A day to remember, bullet for my valentine, sleeping with sirens, asking alexandria, falling in reverse, melodic metalcore.

Emerging in the early 2000s, bands like Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and All That Remains popularized the genre with their blend of blistering riffs, catchy melodies, and emotional lyrics. Melodic metalcore often features a balance between heavy breakdowns, soaring clean vocals, and melodic guitar solos.

That's a great performance with stage, sound, lightening, video graphic, and finally they're back the 3 original member Axl, Duff, and Slash since almost 24 years ago I saw them be together again. the concert which lasted almost 3 hours did not make them lose their enthusiasm to entertain us, even though they were already half a century more. some of the best songs like It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstones, Welcome To The Jungle, Civil War, You Could Be Mine, Sweet Child O' Mine, Patience, Knocking On Heaven's door Making Rock the whole of GBK stadium. They closed the show titled "Not In This Lifetime" with encore song "Paradise City". At the end of song Axl say "Thank You Jakarta, Indonesia, See You again" and then he threw the microphone towards the audience, and not long afterwards all the band members gathered and bowed down as a thank you. some of the band members such as slash and duff distributed guitar picks to the audience as a memento. previously the band had performed in Jakarta in 2012 but without slash and duff, so did slash who had also performed solo in Jakarta with his band then in 2010.

Absolutely excellent concert! They played for 3 hours, which included an encore of 5 songs. The songs performed ranged from their first to their latest album release. This is the second time I have seen them, they are worth the price of admission and I always leave the concert feeling like I had an excellent night. Coopers Stadium is an excellent venue and Dave works the stage well. It was awesome to see Taylor and Dave swap roles with Dave performing on the drums for a song. You can see they enjoy performing and that energy comes across to the crowd.

Best concert ever! The band was on fire, Corgan and Iha are a surprisingly good comic duo, the setlist was incredible with songs spanning all their career and surprise numbers like a Rolling Stones cover. The stage was magic, with giant puppets and light shows that really made the evening seem like something out of a dream. The location is small and collected and the sound was PERFECT, contributing to the atmosphere: it seemed like an evening with friends, the gods descending between men to share stories and emotions. Beyond good.

One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to! They played almost all of there hits. It was such a beautiful experience watching them live! Would recommend to any System of a Down fans!!

Incredible atmosphere and an incredible performance by Disturbed!! They (David) gave a beautiful speech about mental health awareness amidst the untimely passing of Keith Flint. I was moved to tears. Being united as an audience at a concert - particularly rock concerts in my opinion - is always a very special experience. To be so intimately connected to thousands of strangers for a few hours is a wonderful indescribable feeling. For those few hours, we are not alone, we are surrounded by like-minded individuals who are all there for the same reason; to support the artists and the music we love. Disturbed made this experience even more special through their performance. It was loud, it was passionate, and it was damn near perfect. The production value alone was off the charts. This was my first Disturbed concert and it definitely will not be my last. Special shoutout to Three Days Grace - they killed it like always. Three Days Grace will always hold a special place in my heart as a hometown band that I grew up with. They never disappoint! I can't wait to see both bands again!

Out of this world, from start to finish it’s a complete adrenaline rush coupled with an assault of your senses. The constant tribal rhythm from Jay Weinberg, Clown and Tortilla man draw you in and get you jumping. Music is therapy and Slipknot releases a lot of pent up emotions. If you like your rock loud, heavy and slightly abusive;-) then make these guys a must see next time round 5/5.

FESTIVALS 2025

Electric Callboy is rewriting the music scene with its unique blend of styles. The band’s innovative sound spans from mixing German Schlager with deathcore (“Hurrikan”) to hardstyle-influenced industrial metalcore (“Parasite”) and a post-hardcore take on Cascada’s “Everytime We Touch.” Their musical prowess has earned them over 4.4 million monthly Spotify listeners and garnered a massive fanbase exceeding 2 million across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, X, Facebook, TikTok, and Discord.

Since their 2010 inception in Castrop-Rauxel, Electric Callboy has been a force in the German music scene. The release of “Hypa Hypa” in June 2020, now gold-certified, marked a new era of greater success. Their loyal fanbase even amassed 100,000 signatures to push for their Eurovision 2022 participation. Despite not competing, 2022 saw their Hypa Hypa European tour sell out, and their album “TEKKNO” reached #1 in the German album charts.

In 2023, Electric Callboy sold out nearly their entire world tour and their second Escalation Fest. Their single “Everytime We Touch” amassed almost 30 million Spotify streams and over 13 million YouTube views. “We Got The Moves” went viral with 250,000 daily streams, joining “Hypa Hypa” with over 92 million streams.

Considering those who missed the shows, the band took the TEKKNO Movie to over 100+ theaters in Germany, including a sold-out premiere at the renowned Lichtburg Essen, and to Austria and the UK. The film was a success, selling over 10,000 tickets! The band donated all their proceeds to their EC Music School for socially disadvantaged children.

Their latest collaboration with BABYMETAL on “RATATATA” garnered over 1 million streams and views within 24 hours of release, hitting #1 on YouTube Trends and making it into the Top 50 Viral Charts in over 42 countries, becoming one of the band’s biggest successes.

In 2024, Electric Callboy will continue its rise with festival shows all over the world, proving its enduring appeal and cementing its place as a remarkable phenomenon in the music world.

Legendary progressive metal band Dream Theater is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a newly announced U.S. tour.

The band will kick off the tour in February 2025.

New York-area concert dates include Feb.7, 2025 in Philadelphia at the Met Philadelphia; March 14, 2025 in Wallingford, CT at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre; March 17, 2025 at the Kodak Center in Rochester; and March 22 in New York City at Radio City Music Hall.

No opening act has yet been named.

  • Tickets went on sale staring Friday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. through VividSeats.
  • Tickets are priced at $55 to $195.50, depending on location of sets; additional fees may apply.
  • Check out StubHub for more tickets.

The much-anticipated concert, called “An Evening with Dream Theater” features founding drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist John Petrucci, vocalist James LaBrie, bassist John Myung and keyboardist Jordan Rudess.

The group is currently working on their 16th studio album the first after a 15-year hiatus.

“The excitement we have felt from the fans since the first tour was announced has been overwhelming!” Dream Theater said in a statement. “Now we get to bring the show to our home country and play a bunch of cities that we haven’t been together in for more than a decade.

“We can’t wait to continue this historic celebration of 40 years together with everyone in North America next year. We still have plenty of more exciting Dream Theater news to share in the coming weeks.”

Dream Theater’s most popular songs include:

  • “Pull Me Under” (1992)
  • “Metropolis—Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper” (1992)
  • “The Spirit Carries On” (1999)
  • “A Change of Seasons” (1995)
  • “Octavarium” (2005)

  • “On the Backs of Angels” (2011)
  • “Endless Sacrifice” (2003)

Portnoy told Rolling Stone said that the upcoming tour has been well received and that excitement is building.

“[N]ot only for the five of us but for everybody in the audience,” he told Rolling Stone. “I have a feeling there will be people coming in from all over the world to be present for the first show together.

“It’s scary because, under normal circumstances, it takes a bunch of shows to get your sea legs back. But in this case, we need to hit the ground running. That first show is going to be dissected with a magnifying glass in the age of YouTube. We can’t suck.”

Why did Megadeth cancel a concert hours before taking the stage in Virginia? CBS 6 is working to find out.

metal band tour 2024

RICHMOND, Va. -- Fans of the thrash metal band Megadeth were both shocked and disappointed Sunday afternoon when the band abruptly announced its concert at Virginia Credit Union Live in Henrico was not going to happen.

"Due to unexpected and unpredictable circumstances, our show TONIGHT, Sunday, September 15th, in Richmond, Virginia, has been canceled and will not be rescheduled," the band posted on social media.

The announcement was posted around two hours before the venue was scheduled to open to fans, some of whom traveled from out of state to see the legendary act.

To add to the confusion, the venue initially posted the cancellation announcement on its social media channels, then deleted the post.

The venue later shared the band's post of the announcement.

"That's crazy. We volunteer there for our organization and some people had already gotten to the venue before it was announced," Ashley Jamison commented under the CBS 6 Facebook post on the topic.

"Just drove by on my way back home and unfortunately, people were still pulling up to the big concert canceled sign," April Steeley added.

Megadeth did not elaborate in its post about the nature of the "unexpected and unpredictable circumstances" that led to the concert's cancellation and has not yet released additional details.

Virginia Credit Union Live fits around 6,000 fans and Megadeth tickets were still available for purchase the morning of the show.

CBS 6 is working to get answers from concert promoters.

Dave Mustaine

Megadeth performed concerts Friday in Bethel, New York, and Saturday on Long Island, New York without incident.

Both New York venues are larger than the one in Richmond.

There has been no announcement on the status of Megadeth's September 17 concert in Cincinnati.

Peter Frampton is scheduled to perform at Virginia Credit Union Live on Tuesday.

Fans who purchased tickets to the Megadeth concert at Virginia Credit Union Live via AXS online, by phone, or in person at the venue box office can get their money back.

"We deeply regret this cancellation and hope to see you at another venue soon," Megadeth's cancellation message concluded.

This is a developing story. Were you planning to see Megadeth in Richmond? Email the CBS 6 Newsroom if you have additional information to share.

“People are gone. Craig’s out. Chris is out, Joey’s out, Paul’s out. The band is different.” Slipknot’s Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan admits the band aren’t as “close” now as they were 25 years ago

After lineup changes and the deaths of Joey Jordison and Paul Gray, Clown says Slipknot “will never be like” how it was in the early days

MHR392 Slipknot Cover

Slipknot percussionist Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan has said the nu metal stars aren’t as “close” as they were during their early days.

The 54-year-old, who co-founded Slipknot in 1995, confesses in the new issue of Metal Hammer that deaths and lineup changes have affected the band’s dynamic over the years. Key songwriters Paul Gray (bass) and Joey Jordison (drums) have both passed away, while long-serving members Chris Fehn (percussion) and Craig “133” Jones (samples/keys) have left the lineup.

“Brother, the band will never be like that again,” Crahan tells journalist Paul Brannigan when reflecting on 1999, the year Slipknot released their lauded debut album .

“I can’t tell you how close we were then: we’re not that close anymore. People are gone. Craig’s out. Chris is out, Joey’s out, Paul’s out. The band is different. But, back then, there was nine guys that wanted to be in the same place, and we made it work. And we wound up here, and here is wonderful.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Crahan gives a passionate speech about how significant Gray and Jordison were to Slipknot’s development.

“I’m doing these 25-year anniversary interviews, and not a lot of human beings are asking me about them,” he says. “You can’t talk about any of this without talking about them.”

Crahan continues: “They’re greatly missed, and every day that I go through this 25-year anniversary, I miss them more, but also appreciate, love, and just acknowledge who they were to all this. It’s very important for me to say that, because these are two gentlemen that should be talking to you, and they can’t.

“Joey and Paul… Oh my God, they wrote this shit man. Number 1 and Number 2. The path changed for us after they passed, and we had to keep going, and take a new path, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t know where we came from, or ever forget what brought us here.”

Slipknot are currently touring North America to celebrate 25 years of their debut album. The band will also play a run of shows across Europe in December. See dates below.

The new issue of Hammer is a bumper celebration of Slipknot’s debut, featuring interviews with band members, the musicians they’ve inspired, and those who witnessed their start in ’90s Iowa. Youth heavy metal concert in Ignacio brings in an all-Indigenous lineup of bands

Icy Whisper, a heavy metal band from Flagstaff, AZ, with members from the Navajo Nation and Hopi tribe, perform at the 14th annual Rez-olution concert at the 102nd Annual Southern Ute Tribal Fair.

The 14th Annual Native Rez-olution Youth concert took place at the Southern Ute Fair on September 7. Concert-goers in black T-shirts and black leather boots moshed around to an all-Indigenous lineup of seven heavy metal and rock bands. The alcohol and drug-free event has a unique lineup of bands every year. The concert was started years ago by Robert Ortiz, Graphic Specialist for the Southern Ute Drum.

Loren Anthony, a Navajo actor and motivational speaker, played bass with the band Hellthrone, which traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, to perform at the Rez-olution Youth Concert.

“The scene has still shown nothing but love, nothing but community, nothing but unity. This type of event promotes not drinking, where people can come and feel safe and have a place to be. Metal music in general, has always been aggressive and has a lot of true meaning to its words. A lot of the lyrics that a lot of these bands write are music that's about real life, about the struggles,” said Anthony.

Heavy metal is more than just music. It gives people an outlet to express frustrations and societal challenges faced by many Indigenous communities. In fact, a specific subgenre of heavy metal has developed in Native American Communities called Rez Metal.

“ We come here, and we promote love and peace. It's weird to hear that from all these metal bands, but there's a lot of people that don't feel like they belong. There's a lot of pain. When people are struggling, they need to feel like they are heard and they belong. When you come to something like this, and you see the moshing, and you see all the pain, and the anger, we're allowing the misfits to fit. We're allowing everybody to leave here with a smile,” said Ernest Capono, guitarist for Hellthrone.

Secret Earth, a heavy metal/hip-hop band with members from the San Felipe Pueblo, perform in Ignacio, Colorado.

Secret Earth, a band that hails from San Felipe Pueblo, mixes hip-hop with heavy metal. Lead singer Patrick Velasquez feels right at home performing their experimental music at the tribal fair.

“ We come from tribal fairs and feast days. Everybody being here is kind of what we're used to, people gathering, and it's really humbling. It's a driving force for us to be around our own kind. Being up there and seeing everybody from different tribes made me want to scream harder,” said Velasquez.

Dylan Eustace, the guitarist for Secret Earth, agrees.

“ I usually get nervous and stuff. But playing shows and playing out here for my brothers and sisters, I don't feel nervous. I feel good,” said Eustace.

Lo Cash Ninjas, a ska band with members from the Navajo Nation, play at night at the 14th Annual Rez-olution Youth Concert.

Velasquez and Eustace share an encouraging message for youth at the show.

“ If you want to do something, just do it. It doesn't really matter, as long as you're not hurting anybody and you're having a good time. Just make sure that you put everything into it,” said Velasquez.

“ Don't be afraid to be a little bit out there. Don't be afraid to commit to your art if you think that it sounds good,” Eustace said.

The Rez-olution Youth concert takes place every year in September at the Southern Ute Fair.
