The Lessinia Natural Regional Park   instituted in 1990 covers 10.000 hectares extending to the North of Verona, nestled between the Val d'Adige, the Trentino, the group of the Small Dolomites-Pasubio, the Val dell'Agno-Chiampo and the high plain of Verona, where several hilly ridges are detached from the plateau of Lessinia.

The Lessinia Natural Regional Park

To make this protected area an ideal destination for visitors looking for a genuine contact with nature and with the ancient traditions of mountain people, are the gentle grassy peaks, with its animals free to graze, the dreadful rock formations scattered on the territory, the numerous valleys and canyons that run through the land and the unique and typical products that only such a wild territory can offer.

Lessinia Natural Regional Park

Throughout the plateau you can admire mixed forests of hornbeam, oak and chestnut trees typical of the hilly belt which in autumn, changing color, transform the entire landscape. Higher up, however, we find beech and fir woods, an ideal area for pastures.

Lessinia offers the opportunity to observe many types of animals, such as deer, roe deer, alpine chamois, marmots, foxes, weasels, beeches, hares and squirrels as well as numerous species of wild birds such as the peregrine falcon, the golden eagle, the wood grouse

and the porcupine, thus developing a tourism linked to nature and, in particular, to observation such as bird watching. Recently the wolf was also seen in Lessinia Natural Regional Park, returning to colonize the area with a brood, an event of extraordinary naturalistic and scientific interest.

The Lessinia mountains offer several opportunities for athletes, in any season, with numerous ski lifts for the ski season up to cross-country trails, which twisted and turned through the most beautiful corners of the mountain range.

Lessinia Natural Regional Park

In the summer you can go hiking, horse riding and mountain biking through the mountain pastures. In the northernmost part of the park we find the testimony of the Great War, with trenches, tunnels and mule tracks that are part of a defensive system of about 34 km. Do not miss the naturalistic jewels that offers the plateau like the Folignani Forest, the Giazza Forest, the Valdadige Forest with the Corno d'Aquilio and the Molina waterfalls.

The territory

The karst phenomena and the various natural monuments are spectacular:

  •   The Veja Bridge , a massive natural rock bridge, formed by the collapse of a huge cave, with one of the largest and most beautiful arches in Europe. Its beauty is such that the Ponte di Veja was visited and subsequently represented in 1474 by Mantegna in the Bridal chamber of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.- The Spluga della Preta is a karst abyss among the deepest in Italy and is located in the municipality of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo. The depth currently explored is 877 meters but some unexplored tunnels still remain.

  • - The Riparo Solinas , also known as the Fumane Caves, is located along the road from Fumane to the hamlet of Molina. Precisely in this place some scholars found numerous artifacts dating back to the Neanderthal Man (about 60,000 years ago) and the first Homo Sapiens, (about 32,000 years ago), so much that is considered by many the most important site in Europe , both for the long period of use and for its own characteristic

  • - The Park of the Molina Waterfall is an ideal oasis for everyone, from adults to children, surrounded by lush greenery, between vertiginous rocky walls, large mysterious caverns and thundering waterfalls. It is located near the small medieval village of Molina, where time seems to run slowly. The park offers several walking and walking trails, well-marked and with an excellent.

Regional Nature Park of Lessinia

Lake Garda

The Regional Nature Park of Lessinia is a genuine oasis of nature and traditions, stretching on the upper side of the Lessini Mountains. The scientific interest stimulated by this park is owed to its flora and fauna consisting of tens of species which ensure a stable balance of the regional ecosystem.

On the other hand, people with naturalistic interests will be pleased to learn the park excels by certain geological features, being marked, for instance, by the largest karst cave in the pre-Alpine area of the region of Veneto. We speak of the Covolo di Camposilvano Cave , which is said to have inspired Dante in conceiving and describing the Inferno in its Divine Comedy, and which has fueled the device of sundry local legends.

The park is dotted with all sorts of spectacular geological formations and fossil deposits, but, as it was already mentioned, it is worth visiting by people interested in discovering the local traditions, since the ethnographic and cultural identity of the communities within Lessinia has preserved virtually intact.

The organization which administrates the park also suggests visits to the more than 10 museums located within the park, in sundry localities in the area.

Adventure Travel With a Glass of Wine

Lessinia Regional Nature Park

By Jennifer Dombrowski 10 Comments

It’s not easy to believe that long ago, instead of the lush green Lessinia Regional Park we see today, the area was covered with a warm sea rich in tropical flora and fauna.Today, the 100 kilometer square protected area is an eco and adventure travelers’ dream with tons of adventure activities available all year long. With everything from Nordic walking to paragliding in summer and snowshoeing to kite snowboarding in the winter, it can be hard to chose what to see and do! Here are a few highlights not to be missed when visiting Lessinia Regional Park in the summer:

Sant’Anna d’Alfaedo Museum

Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo Museum

A drive up the steep slopes of the pre-Alps brought us to Sant’Anna d’Alfaedo, where the Museo Paleontoglogico e Preistorio helped us to discover how 50 million years ago this area was covered in a big sea rich in many fish and plants. The building itself is built out of stone from the area and is divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to geology of the territory, to explanations of the stratigraphys of the local caves, and to the exhibition of a series of fossils of exceptional value, among them a shark more than six meters long and a sea turtle, reptiles, ammonites, and echinoderms. The second part is devoted to local prehistory, rich of findings of incredible value, such as those of the cave of Fumane, including a 35,000 year old cave drawing and Roman coins intricate with detail.

Ponte di Veja

Ponte di Veja

Nearby is the Ponte di Veja, the largest natural bridge in Europe at 50 meters high. The bridge is the result of natural formation of the cavern. In the beginning there was a cavern of karstic origin. The structure of the cavern was represented by a sort of architrave formed by the bridge with soluble calcareous rock below. The waters of the torrents passed over the bridge, forming a waterfall. With the passing of time the sinkholes were formed bringing the waters inside the cavern, this fact led to the digging, the most soluble part leaving only the arch in red ammonitic limestone. According to a popular legend, Dante Alighieri, exiled in Verona and the guest of Cangrande della Scala, was inspired by the bridge for the description of Malebolge.

Ponte di Veja

Studies and excavations began in 1932 of the caves surrounding the bridge. Estimates of human presence are based on the Upper Paleolithic and date back 100,000 years with the area populated until about 10,000 years ago, a period of probable loss of the extracting of flints for the appearance of metal in sufficient quantity for the first articles made with flint. Residents near the bridge had to be skilled craftsmen at work building the flint arrows, needles, and pins.

Stop by the Trattoria Ponte di Veja after exploring the bridge and surrounding area. The menu includes several specialties with tartufo nero (black truffles) from the park.

Molina Waterfalls

Molina, Italy

Molina is a Medieval village at the junction between three valleys in steep wooded mountainside. The village itself is charming. The old stone houses reflect the style of the western Lessinia, and its botanical museum in the main square has a fine exhibition of local flora. Located below the village, is the Parco delle Cascate (Waterfalls Park), the main attraction of the village.

Parco delle Cascate

The final immersion of the Lessini region took place during the Tertiary era, 25 – 30 million years ago, and the rocks in this area, since the moment of their sub-aerial exposition, were subjected to the action of atmospheric agents which caused their modification and fragmentation. The waterfalls were originated along the rivers because of the presence of rocks with different levels of erodibility. The clayey waterproff layers of Biancone limestone prevent meteoric water from filtering under the ground and thus caused the creation of springs.

Parco delle Cascate

From the village, follow the path to the park entrance, which about a 10 minute walk. And if you think the path to the entrance is steep and strenuous, turn back! Once inside the park, there are three different trails. The first is the easy trail and takes you to the grotto and Cascata Nero.

Parco delle Cascate

The red path (medium difficulty) passes by all but the panoramic viewpoint, the round well, and the Dark-breasts cave. The black path is the most difficult and passes along all points, with several very steep uphill ascents. From either the red or black paths, be sure to zip along the cableway across the Cascata del Tombolino and the bravest can swing right into the Cascata Nera.

The Visit Lessinia Project

lessinia tourist

Visit Lessinia is a regional marketing project, an initiative created by the citizens of Lessinia to promote and showcase the region . The project is open to anyone to wants to make a contribution, whether they are individuals, entrepreneurs, associations or institutions.

Our story began in February 2018, when a group of people from a number of municipalities in the Lessinia area came together with one request, a need: to work together so that the area could be reinvigorated and relaunched, seeking to attract sustainable, quality tourism.

To do this, a project needed to be launched involving economic activities (shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, other accommodation facilities, artisans, companies, associations, etc.), private individuals and, of course, public administrations.

Initially, all the mayors of the Lessinia municipalities signed the memorandum of understanding, each committing themselves financially to support the start-up of the activities.

Subsequently, various information meetings were organised and the economic and tourist operators of Lessinia were asked to sign up, while more recently the Pro Loco, Associations, Polisportiva sports clubs, Groups and Guides have been involved.

The project has already been recognised by the Veneto region and counts on important partnerships with institutions such as GAL Baldo-Lessinia, ATV (Transport), Verona Airport, the Municipality of Verona, Confcommercio, Cassa Rurale della Vallagarina, the Pro Loco consortia and, we hope, the Italian Chamber of Commerce.

This year, the Visit Lessinia area has been included in the DMO (Destination Management Organisation) Verona – a body that plans and promotes tourism in the Verona area – so as to guarantee an integrated offer on the shared platform for promoting events and distributing tourist information.

The Lessinia Pro Loco Consortium has strongly adhered to the Destination Lessinia project, to promote together the territory and the numerous volunteers always work to enhance the beauty of Lessinia in the best possible way.

We also need people who speak the language of tourism, who are aware of its dynamics, and who can work and research every day in order to promote the area, improve its reputation, and welcome high-quality tourism that also brings development and benefits to the residents. This team of people compose the IAT Office of Lessinia, which plays the official and important function of information and tourist reception of our territory.

IAT LESSINIA – TOURIST INFORMATION AND WELCOME OFFICE

IAT -  Tourism and Information office - Lessinia is the office responsible for collecting and distributing tourist information and for welcoming visitors , as well as many of the region's organisational activities.

It organises meetings with operators and associations to keep them up-to-date on activities, updates regional information systems and portals (website, DMS, social media, newsletter), participates in specialist training sessions for IAT, sector fairs and workshops, and coordinates associations and operators in the area. It also takes care of external communication for the promotion of Lessinia at an international level, through staff specialised in both language and tourism marketing.

The tourist office is open every weekend and on public holidays from October to May, every day from June to September, and throughout the Christmas and Easter holidays.

In August 2018, IAT Lessinia entered the circuit of the Regional IATs and is, therefore, part of the network of tourist information offices of the Veneto region. A physical but also digital network that allows to stay informed about everything going on in our region and gives regional visibility to everything that happens in Lessinia . The region has also provided a valuable IT tool, DMS, which helps in the process of uploading and distributing all of Lessinia's tourist information and points of interest to the world wide web.

IAT Lessinia keeps the main office in Bosco Chiesanuova open and coordinates 35 info-points throughout the area.

The Info-Point Network

Given the size of the Lessinia region, and in order to offer the most complete service possible, a pilot project called the ' Lessinia info-point network ' has been devised.

Since July 2019, 35 info-points have been active in the region, housed in as many facilities, including hotels, shops, libraries, points of sale, spread throughout the Lessinia area and also at its borders, in the municipalities of Verona and Colognola ai Colli.

All the info-points are in continuous and direct contact with IAT via an internet portal and are supplied with all the material on events and shows, maps, routes, itineraries, accommodation lists and more.
