Cateaux Wattel, Antwerp to Sydney, NSW 1854-55

IMPORTANT UPDATE: A clear version of the passenger list is now available at FamilySearch. It was uploaded on 18 July 2022. The copy available at FamilySearch was apparently made from the original handwritten record which is in the custody of the Archives Department, Public Library of New South Wales and was microfilmed by the Genealogical Society, Salt Lake City, Utah in New South Wales in 1961. The digitised verson was made available at FamilySearch.com on 18 July 2022. [1] The copy available at Ancestry.com is mostly unreadable.

The Cateaux Wattel (also recorded as Cateau Wattel , Catteaux Wattel , Catteaux Wattell in various media) was a Belgium built cargo ship named after her owner, Cateaux, Wattel & Co. She was built in Antwerp in 1854.

On 9 December 1854, she sailed from Antwerp carrying 430 German immigrants, mostly vine dressers and their families, bound for the Colony of New South Wales. She was under the command of Captain Louis Meyer, with Louis Delmer the first mate, Auguste Zimmerman, the second mate, and Antonie Muller, the ship's doctor. The crew were all Belgians. This was her first voyage and took only 90 days which reportedly pleased her owners.

Note: Some records list her port of origin as Hamburgh in Germany and her arrival date as 12 March. Possibly she docked on 9 March but passengers remained on board until 12 March.

Destruction by Fire (1860)

She was destroyed by fire in Sydney Harbour on 4 May 1860, while loading cargo at Botts' Wharf. The fire possibly started in bags of Kauri Gum but there were claims that the fire may have been deliberately lit by one of the crew. The flames quickly engulfed the vessel. With the assistance of the Steamer 'Rapid' & aid from the French Man-of-War, the burning ship was towed into the stream opposite Dawe's Battery where attempts were made to sink her. William Sass was committed for setting fire to the ship. According to one newspaper article, her hull and spars were sold on 11 May for £160. The remainder of the wreck is believed to sit in the Harbour. [8] [9] [10]

Double-Decker Carousel Columbia at California's Great America

Height Requirement:  46” minimum or accompanied by a supervising companion.

Providing an incredible grand entrance to Great America, and standing more than 100 feet high, Carousel Columbia has been the focal point for all entering the park since 1976. Guest who attended during the park’s first few seasons now bring their kids back for that first “wow” moment when entering Great America.

Kids of all ages enjoy choosing from more than 100 exotic animals and horses for a memorable ride. The first level contains a myriad of riding options with giant rabbits, camels, dragons, ostriches and reindeer. The second tier is filled with decorated and jeweled stallions and mustangs, waiting to create a family carousel memory.

Rider Safety Information

• A double decker traditional Carousel ride with animals that move up and down, stationary animals, and chariots mounted on a circular platform that rotates counter-clockwise.
• Guests under 46” tall must be held by a supervising companion who is standing on the platform between the animals. Only one rider per animal.
• Maximum weight – 170 lb. per animal; 680 lb. per chariot.
• Guests must have the ability to straddle the ride unit. Guests unable to straddle the ride unit must be seated in a chariot. Guests who do not have independent seated postural control, appropriate center of gravity, able to hold on with one functioning arm, appropriate observed behavior and hand-held infants must ride in a chariot with a supervising companion.
• Riders with a full leg cast must be seated in a chariot.
• Alternate access is available on the lower deck using the ramp to the left of the upper deck entrance. The lower deck is wheelchair accessible and can accommodate one wheelchair during a ride cycle which will be secured in a designated spot on the ride platform. Guests not utilizing the ramp may enter through the lower deck entrance or exit and will have to take several steps, on their own or with the assistance of a companion, and be capable of stepping up on the platform.
• Please notify a ride operator if needing to use the ramp.
• Service animals are permitted on the ride platform or chariots.
