Hot rides on the inland seas: Great Lakes cruises gaining steam, stoking enthusiasm

In many ways, these luxury Great Lakes cruise liners are the antithesis of traditional ocean-going vessels. Instead of sun-splashed Caribbean beaches, travelers can expect stops at such cities as Mackinac Island, seen here, Detroit, Marquette, Muskegon, Toronto, Milwaukee and Duluth, Minn.

A trip to Mackinac Island has long been a quintessential summer vacation. This year, thousands of travelers are opting for a luxurious way to get there: aboard a Great Lakes cruise liner.

"We had a wonderful time in Mackinac," said Rusty Davis, a California native who visited Michigan for the first time aboard Viking's Niagara & the Great Lakes cruise with his wife, Kathy. Davis and his wife are just two of thousands of travelers who will embark on a journey this summer to sail the Midwest's inland seas.

Just as the Great Lakes might not be the most typical cruise destination, the ships don't offer a typical experience either, Davis explained: "These boats are not party boats. They’re designed for older people, education, enlightenment and exploring places you’ve never been."

In recent years, ships such as Viking's Polaris have turned the Great Lakes into one of the most popular spots for cruising. The Great Lakes will see fewer cruise ships this year, but industry officials say that's a blip in an otherwise upward trendline.

Cruise the Great Lakes, a regional program that promotes the industry, projects ships between May and September that will carry 20,000 passengers and make 600 port visits. Michigan alone will welcome 157 visits from nine cruise ships, according to Kelly Wolgamott, director of marketing for Pure Michigan.

Last year, there were 800 regional port visits, according to Cruise the Great Lakes. The overall decline is largely because one cruise line, American Queen Voyages, shut down in February, taking two ships out of service on the lakes this year. However, Victory Cruise Lines bought the 190-passenger vessels, Victory I and Victory II, and plans to put them back into service next year, the company said in a statement.

"We are excited to return to the Great Lakes in April 2025," said John Waggoner, CEO of Victory Cruise Lines.

Anna Tanski, tourism director of Cruise the Great Lakes, points to long-term growth in the sector: “In just a decade, the number of cruise passengers has more than doubled." The organization projects $200 million in regional economic impact this year, a nearly 50% increase from 2022.

Six cruise lines are operating on the Great Lakes this year (Pearl Seas Cruises, Viking Cruises, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd and Plantours Cruises), and some are adding new itineraries and port stops. Each of these cruise lines has its own specialty: Viking is geared towards the more adventurous traveler with its expedition ships, and Pearl Seas boasts private balconies for every room. Meanwhile, French-based Ponant and German Hapag-Lloyd serve European travelers.

Even for longtime Michiganians, Great Lakes cruises can be eye-opening. Michael Matti, 54, a former teacher in Stevensville, had been on five previous cruises, including to Antarctica, before traveling aboard the Octantis in 2022.

"I've been to Mackinac, I don't know how many times in my lifetime, but when I went on a tour, I learned many things I didn't know," he said. "It just gave me a very different perspective of my home state."

In many ways, these luxury Great Lakes cruise liners are the antithesis of traditional ocean-going vessels. Instead of sun-splashed Caribbean beaches, travelers can expect stops at such cities as Detroit, Marquette, Muskegon, Toronto, Milwaukee and Duluth, Minn.

Instead of a hulking ship with a towering water slide on the top deck, picture something much smaller: most Great Lakes cruisers are (relatively) petite, typically accommodating 250 or fewer passengers. By comparison, Princess Cruise's Royal Princess ship can hold up to 3,560 guests.

And instead of casinos, shops and live shows, Great Lakes cruise ships offer lower-key experiences such as scientific lectures and performances by local musicians. Pearl Mist is one such luxury ship: a comparatively intimate vessel that can accommodate 210 guests.

The voyage isn't cheap: Prices for a 15-night trip across all five Great Lakes aboard the Pearl Mist start at $10,830.  By comparison, a 14-night Caribbean cruise to the Panama Canal and the western Caribbean on Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas costs an average of $1,638.

Rather than a family of four looking for an indulgent tropical getaway, Great Lakes cruises tend to attract a much different clientele: educated, older and well-traveled. “They’ve been to the Caribbean. They’ve been to Alaska. They’ve been to the Mediterranean," said Mark Schrupp, executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. "The Great Lakes is the next frontier for people who really enjoy cruising.”

Detroit draws cruise ships

Detroit has seen an increase in port visits over the past few years, with 52 dockings in 2022 and 62 in 2023, though just 40 are scheduled this year because American Queen Voyages shut down, Shrupp said.

"The Great Lakes in 2025 should promise to be another banner year for us," said John Jamian, director of operations of Detroit's port authority.

Detroit's efforts to woo more cruise ships have included spending half a million dollars on an extra bollard to upgrade the port authority's dock near the Renaissance Center. The goal is to accommodate longer ships like Viking's Octantis, a vessel more than 650 feet long that stopped at a longer, privately owned dock in 2022.

Tourist organizations like Visit Detroit roll out the red carpet for cruise passengers. As soon as they dock, they're greeted with local entertainment, local guides and Motown music, said Jennifer Ollinger, tourism manager of Visit Detroit: "We have the infrastructure; we just need to convince them to come. Once they get here, they're like, wow, there's a lot to see and do."

High-profile development projects like the Hudson's site and the recently reopened Michigan Central Station help with that. So do the record-breaking crowds who poured into Detroit for the nationally televised NFL Draft in late April.

Davis, the Viking passenger from California, disembarked in Detroit this month and was pleasantly surprised. "I was not aware of all the different things there were in the downtown area and all that had been revitalized," he said. "It was very clean."

While ashore, Davis particularly enjoyed touring Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge Center in Dearborn: "We watched the crews build F-150s, it was so fascinating ... we were there so long they had to come looking for us to go back on the ship."

Davis added that "Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, and the Ford Rouge Center have been the highlights of the trip."

Betsy Ristroph, 78, a retired librarian from Georgia, docked in Detroit last July on Viking's Niagara & the Great Lakes cruise and had a similar reaction. "My previous impression was that all the industry left, and there had been riots long ago. I had very bleak impressions. But it feels to me now they had revitalized the downtown and kept their sports teams," she said. "I have a positive impression of Detroit now."

While in Detroit, Ristroph particularly enjoyed touring the Rouge Center: "I've seen enough museums in my life … but I found the plant fascinating."

Not only do such travelers witness Detroit’s revitalization, but they also play a vital role in it. In 2023, the 14,000 passengers who visited Detroit generated $1.5 million of direct economic impact, according to Cruise the Great Lakes.

Other Michigan cities are looking to get in on the action. Bay City is working to identify the best locations to start welcoming cruise ships on the Saginaw River. "We've been looking to get into the cruise ship industry for years now," said Annette Rummel, CEO of Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau, an organization that oversees Bay City tourism.

Muskegon, already a port of call on many cruise itineraries, is also looking to add a second dock to accommodate more Great Lakes cruise ships, according to Robert Lukens, Community Development Director of the port of Muskegon. Other Michigan ports receiving cruise ships this year include Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Traverse City, Alpena and Escanaba.

Science instead of shows

Another major draw for cruisers is the natural beauty of Michigan's Great Lakes coasts, ranging from boreal forests in Thunder Bay to sandstone cliffs in Marquette to the golden autumnal coastline off Sault Ste. Marie.

“For many of these travelers, it’s their first time in Michigan,” Wolgamott said. “One thing that always surprises travelers when they come is how big the Great Lakes are. They get to discover the beauty of our 3,200 miles of freshwater coastline and quaint coastal towns.”

Great Lakes cruises seek to give passengers a deeper understanding of the flora and fauna unique to the region. Viking's ships are particularly science-oriented. Both the Octantis and Polaris have scientists on board conducting research in the Great Lakes as well as a science lab where passengers can complete weather samples or launch weather balloons.

"You wouldn't expect how interesting the scientific information is," said Doris Colgate, in her early 80s, who traveled aboard the Octantis in 2022. As a sailor and owner of a sailing company, Colgate is an explorer at heart. But compared to exploring on her own, Colgate appreciated the expert guidance the Octantis offered: "I loved being at anchor in a remote area and seeing all the birds come in. Then an ornithologist would explain the various birds indigenous to the area."

As an expedition ship, the Octantis also offers plenty of opportunities for active exploration. "There were some very active people who kayaked all day long. It’s a great cruise for younger people or fit older people," said Colgate.

With this type of programming, Viking has a no-children policy, limiting guests to 18 years and older. However, other Great Lakes cruise lines have a more flexible policy on children. In addition to scientists, Viking has visiting lecturers on board, while Pearl Seas guests can end the evening conversing with naturalists or local historians. "It's not going on a cruise ship and seeing a casino or big show, but it's much more down to earth: lectures and local musicians," Matti said. Such an environment makes a great place to build friendships with like-minded individuals who may prefer cultural enrichment over pizzazz. "That's one of the things we love," Matti said. "People are so open and conversational. You have that opportunity at night to listen to music and have a drink."

Matti also made friends with crew members — some of whom he still follows on Facebook. Compared to ocean-going vessels, many Great Lakes cruises have crew-to-passenger ratios close to 1:1. "We had room stewards who knew us by name on day one ... they are very, very attentive."

Amenities on these ships reflect the high price tag. On board, nearly everything is included: from alcohol to off-shore activities, though there are add-on options for some stops. There's attention to detail down to the bookshelves — on the Octantis, all the books were related to Great Lakes expeditions. More than the unique programming or entertainment, Matti said it's comfort and service like this that would make him go again.

“Veterans of the cruise industry want to see different things than what they’re seeing all the time — like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame or the Navy Pier in Chicago," said David Gutheil, chief commercial officer of the port of Cleveland. "There’s a lot more differentiation among the Great Lakes cruise ship destinations compared to what you’d see cruising in other parts of the world.”

California just opened the floodgates for self-driving cars

After a state regulatory board ruling, San Francisco will have 24/7 robotaxis on its streets. A Washington Post analysis shows how it’s a pivotal moment for the industry.

SAN FRANCISCO — California regulators voted Thursday to allow self-driving car companies Waymo and Cruise to offer 24/7 paid taxi service in San Francisco, a major win for the industry that could pave the way for more widespread adoption of the technology.

Cars without drivers have become a common sight on San Francisco’s winding, hilly and often foggy streets. Thursday’s vote stripped most limitations on operating and charging for rides, essentially creating more ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft — just without the drivers.

It’s a pivotal moment for the autonomous transportation industry, expanding one of the biggest test cases for a world in which many companies envision not needing drivers at all . For years, companies from Amazon to Google have experimented with self-driving vehicles, something that could prove incredibly disruptive to the labor economy if it ever materializes en masse.

In California alone, there are more than 40 companies — ranging from young start-ups to tech giants — that have permits to test their cars in San Francisco, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. According to a Washington Post analysis of the data, the companies collectively clock millions of miles on public roads every year — along with hundreds of mostly minor accidents.

California often serves as a “canary in the coal mine for the country and the developed world,” said David Zipper, Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Taubman Center for State and Local Government. “We’re talking about monumental impacts on how our streets work, environmental emissions, on sprawl, on equity. The potential impacts just can’t be overstated.”

Is aloe vera the key to perfect skin? Here’s what the science says.

The California Public Utilities Commission approved the permits for Waymo and Cruise on Thursday despite pushback from local leaders and many residents in San Francisco, who argue that the autonomous vehicles have caused chaos around the city — from traffic jams to disrupted emergency scenes. The 3-1 vote came after a seven-hour meeting in San Francisco, where hundreds of people came out both in support and against the proposals.

“I do believe in the potential of this technology to increase safety on the roadway,” said Commissioner John Reynolds, who is also a former managing counsel at Cruise. “Today is the first of many steps in bringing (autonomous vehicle) transportation services to Californians, and setting a successful and transparent model for other states to follow.”

Aaron Peskin, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and a frequent critic of the self-driving cars, said he, Mayor London Breed and members of the city’s transportation agencies planned to meet after the vote to “discuss next steps.” He said it is “likely” the city would file for a rehearing, which would be a precursor to litigation against the commission.

“This is going to be an issue that San Francisco and cities and states around the country are going to grapple with for a long time to come,” he said. “So this is the beginning, not the end.”

Public data on California testing analyzed by The Post shows the sharp expansion in recent years: In 2020, 551 cars were tested over 1.8 million miles in California. By 2022, that grew to 1,051 cars tested over more than 4.7 million miles.

Google sister company Waymo and Cruise are the largest companies testing in the state by far, with hundreds of cars on the road in San Francisco at any given time. But there are other well-known names in the race, too: Apple, which has largely kept quiet on its self-driving car operation — internally dubbed Project Titan — had about 50 cars testing on public roads, according to 2022 data. Amazon’s Zoox has about 100 cars. A hodgepodge of largely start-ups comprise the rest.

(Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Post. Interim CEO Patty Stonesifer sits on Amazon’s board.)

Despite the fervor around the industry, many experts caution that a more widespread Jetsons-like future is still probably years away . Already, companies like Uber and Tesla had predicted that they would be widespread by the mid-2020s, but the technology has failed to deliver . And while more than 40 companies have permits to test their technology in California, many still must have at least one human being supervising the driving. Several companies don’t appear to be actively testing the technology at all.

Still, California state Rep. Laura Friedman (D), who chairs the state’s Transportation Committee, said regulators are grappling with how to control this rapidly developing industry. She said Thursday’s vote should be a wake-up call that the state and federal government need to move faster.

“California is known for being a leader and innovator, and everyone wants that to continue,” she said. “At the same time, it’s very difficult for regulators to even know where to begin to regulate this. Is it around safety performance? Is it around the software? Is it around detection? We don’t know.”

As part of the conditions of operation in California, the companies are required to report certain information, such as mileage and collisions, to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the CPUC. But critics say this data is unreliable and incomplete because the companies are not required to report a range of other incidents that affect the public — such as when a car veers into a bike or bus lane or stops short and disrupts traffic.

According to the data analyzed by The Post, there have been at least 236 collisions reported by companies with cars operating in fully autonomous mode in California since 2019 — most relatively minor. That does not include the many other examples of issues the cars have run into when they were operating in manual mode, or after the autonomous car was taken over by a human driver. The vast majority of collision reports are from Waymo and Cruise.

In statements, both Waymo and Cruise have stood by their safety records — saying their technology will ultimately lead to safer streets.

Just a few months after a Chinese start-up, Pony.ai , scored a permit to test its driverless cars on California’s roads in 2021, one of its cars rolled over a center divider in Fremont, Calif., and mangled a traffic sign. Regulators later revoked its permits. Today, according to the California DMV, the company is allowed to test so long as a human is present to take control when things go awry. According to public data, the company had 41 cars active in California in 2022.

Pony.ai did not respond to a request for comment.

That same year, an Apple car near its campus in Cupertino bumped into a curb at about 13 mph. No one was hurt, but it misaligned a wheel on the car. In two separate instances in May and June of this year, Amazon’s Zoox was involved in two minor crashes in San Francisco that caused injuries to the human drivers in the car.

Apple declined to comment. Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.

Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University professor who has conducted research on autonomous-vehicle safety for decades, said the self-driving car companies are under intense pressure to turn a profit and — in some cases — prove the business’s viability to shareholders. He worries about whether that fervor comes at the expense of public safety.

“Ultimately this industry is going to be about trust,” he said. “These car companies are using public resources to get free testing platforms.”

Since autonomous vehicles are regulated at the state level in California, local leaders have little say over how and where these cars operate in their cities.

In Los Angeles, Jarvis Murray, the county’s transportation administrator, said it is “untenable” to allow a new mobility service to expand without requiring companies to report more data and also give the cities more say over what is happening on their public roadways.

“As a city agency charged with protecting the safety of all road users, (Los Angeles Department of Transportation) does not believe enough data, studies, or emphasis has been placed on how this industry will affect a City’s safety goals or how AV passenger service will impact nonpassengers,” Murray said in a letter to the CPUC.

Still, some officials report the technology is prompting minimal issues.

Mountain View Mayor Alison Hicks said she hasn’t been too bothered by the cars that are testing around her city. She said that’s probably because the roads in Mountain View are generally calm and wide, and many of the companies testing there still have safety drivers who can take control if needed.

What worries her the most is the massive impact that the cars could cause on society writ large — from issues around jobs, to implications for the climate and mass transportation. She said those are massive questions that leaders like her have yet to grapple with.

“Between AI and driverless vehicles, if they both come online at the same time, what happens to our workforce?” she said. “When new technology rolls out, safety is not the only issue. You have to look for a collection of issues.”

But in San Francisco, city officials say they are fed up with being a guinea pig for the industry.

In an attempt to halt Thursday’s vote, they wrote letters and spoke at hearings to bring attention to a string of incidents in recent months: A car stopping near the scene of a mass shooting, another getting tangled in caution tape and downed wires after a major storm and another blocking a firetruck from exiting a station for several minutes.

“I know this is the way the tech is going, and this is the way the industry is going, and that’s fine,” San Francisco Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson previously told The Post. “But don’t shove it down our throats.”

There was also a more organic protest movement that stemmed from residents. In videos that went viral on Twitter, a group of people found that placing traffic cones on the nose of the vehicles disables them and causes them to stall.

Their goal: to highlight how easy it is to confuse the technology, and also pressure state regulators to halt the expansion of these cars on San Francisco’s streets.

Following the vote, Waymo said in a statement that it was “grateful for this vote of confidence” from the California regulators. Kyle Vogt, CEO of Cruise, said Thursday’s vote was a “huge milestone” for the autonomous vehicle industry.

“But even more importantly a signal to the country that (California) prioritizes progress over our tragic status quo,” he said. We “remain committed to collaborating closely with regulators to push toward this critical goal.”

But for Koopman, the Carnegie Mellon professor, Thursday’s decision was a discouraging sign of what’s to come for the industry.

“The regulators have been letting these guys do whatever they want thus far,” he said. “This yes vote means that if you create chaos on San Francisco’s streets, then there are no real consequences.”

Take a Victory Lap in the 2025 Toyota GR Supra

  • 2025 GR Supra Available in Two Grades: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium
  • Rated up to 382 Horsepower with 368 lb-ft. of Torque
  • Automatic or Manual Transmission Available on Both Grades
  • Complimentary 1-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association

PLANO, Texas (June 28, 2024) – Expert tested on the raceway and equipped to conquer the streets, the 2025 Toyota GR Supra has earned a reputation for offering impressive handling and exhilarating driving performance.

The 2025 GR Supra is available in two grades: 3.0 and 3.0 Premium, both available with a manual transmission option or an automatic transmission. GR Supra is powered by an inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine that outputs up to 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft. of torque.

The sports car also continues to offer performance-focused standard equipment across all models, like a double joint-type MacPherson front and multi-link independent rear suspension, sport calibrated electronic power steering, and dual rear exhaust outlets. All models wear high performance Michelin® Pilot® Super Sport tires for maximum grip of the Supra’s Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) platform.

Driving Performance of a True Sports Car The GR Supra’s balance of ride quality, powerful acceleration, and agile handling offers an experience that excites the senses from the moment drivers push the start button. Equipped with a dual-branch exhaust manifold, with six ports instead of two, a deep growl rumbles to life at ignition. The exhaust note is just one part of the equation, as the engine is also designed to manage heat and airflow to maximize its 10.2:1 compression ratio while preventing abnormal combustion due to high boost.

With an engine that produces high torque at high rpm, the GR Supra retains the eagerness to rev with turbine-like smoothness, that can deliver a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds in the 8-speed AT and 4.2 seconds in the MT. GR Supra 3.0 grades equipped with the AT have a manufacturer-estimated 23 city/31 highway/26 combined. Fuel economy is due in part to standard start/stop technology, which shuts the engine off while the car is at rest.

Drivers can select from Normal, Sport, and Individual modes that adjust throttle response, suspension damping, and power steering settings. Additionally, both grades include an Adaptative Variable Suspension (AVS) with sensors that constantly detect changes in the driving operations and road surface conditions, and solenoid valves finely control the damping force of the shock absorbers. In the 3.0 and 3.0 premium grades, NORMAL mode provides a high-level balance between vehicle stability and supple ride comfort, enabling sports driving without sacrificing comfort. SPORT mode realizes a reassuring and flat vehicle posture with suppressed roll and driving with a more agile steering response.

In 2023, the GR Supra’s suspension was retuned and the shock and shock absorbers were set for a balance between body roll and ride comfort. The mechanical components in the electric power steering and the system’s operating parameters were also tuned for agile handling. All models come with an active rear sport differential standard.

Premium Vibes Inside and Out On the inside, drivers experience a refined cockpit. The 3.0 grade comes with standard black soft-touch Alcantara and leather-trimmed sport seats with power adjustment. The 3.0 Premium grade brings a luxury feel with power adjustable seats that come with an option of black leather-trimmed seats or a hazelnut-colored leather trim.

Audio options add a sonic dimension to a drive in the GR Supra with a 12-speaker, 500-watt JBL® Hi-Fi system standard on the 3.0 Premium. The 3.0 grade can be upgraded to the 12-speaker JBL system when equipped with the available Safety & Technology Plus JBL Package. GR 3.0 models equipped with the Safety & Technology package will come with Toyota Supra Connect.

Exterior color options include Stratosphere* (blue), Absolute Zero (white), Nocturnal (black), and Renaissance Red 2.0. The 2025 GR Supra is expected to arrive on dealer lots this fall with a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing (MSRP) of $56,250 plus Dealer Processing and Handling (DPH) of $1,095 for the GR Supra 3.0 model. The GR Supra 3.0 Premium model starts at an MSRP of $59,400 plus DPH (AT or MT equipped).

*Extra-cost color.

Hands On with GR Supra Manual In 2023, a welcomed addition to Mk V Supra was the option of a Manual Transmission. Developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Engineers in Japan in cooperation with Toyota Motor Europe, and German transmission supplier ZF, the MT is a no additional cost option on the Supra 3.0 and 3.0 Premium models.

The manual gearbox was built with components designed specifically to suit the power and torque characteristics of the GR Supra’s 3.0-liter 382-hp straight-six engine. The engineering team combined an existing transmission housing and gear set, developed a new shift lever, and removed elements that were not required, such as the acoustic package, which reduced weight, bringing the manual transmission-equipped Supra in at 3,389 pounds. At the heart of the transmission is a new large-diameter clutch with a reinforced diaphragm spring. With a larger friction area and a strong spring, this component has the high-performance capability appropriate for use with the GR Supra’s high-torque engine.

The manual gearbox also features an Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) programmed with software that prioritizes sporty performance. When upshifting, the parameters are tuned to optimize engine torque at the moment of clutch engagement and release. On downshifts, the software includes rev matching for consistent performance. The iMT is set as the default, but, if the driver prefers, it can be switched off in Individual Mode.

Close attention was also given to how a manual shifter could be accommodated in the driver’s cockpit. The lever ratio was specifically set to minimize the effort required to make shifts and engage the reverse gear. While the weight and shape of the shift knob, along with the quality of shift engagement, have all been precisely defined. Ergonomics were also considered, as the console unit and position of the drive mode selector were adjusted to provide a 1.7-inch clearance between the shift knob and the control panel.

Traction, Stability, and Agility Tuning GR Supra MT equipped models’ traction and braking systems are optimized for driving with a stick shift. With the automatic transmission, it’s possible to use the second gear when pulling away uphill when opposite wheels are on surfaces with different grip levels. For example, when the car is parked on a partly icy road, progress is smooth with virtually no rolling back or wheel slip. With a manual gearbox, first gear must be used and releasing the clutch brings a greater risk of wheel spin. To address the issue, Toyota engineers have tuned the car’s TRAction Control (TRAC) system to help achieve smooth operation similar to the AT equipped model.

The system is also optimized for the GR Supra’s characteristic high engine torque, wide tires, and rear-wheel drive. The car’s character when accelerating out of a corner is a key element in the “Fun to Drive” quality Toyota has developed for the GR Supra. For the MT-equipped version, the traction control has again been the focus to help ensure an ideal balance of agility and stability when exiting a corner on the throttle. TRAC intervention has been calibrated to help maintain stability – so the car can keep faithfully to the driver’s intended line – while allowing the right amount of power for a sporty experience.

To counter the possibility of “snap-off” oversteer – something that may be hard to control with the car’s Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) alone – an Anti-Roll Program (ARP) is in use for both the MT- and AT-equipped versions of the GR Supra. This is designed to intervene at an earlier point with the VSC to counter any sudden loss of grip when the car’s high-response suspension setting is used.

Audio, Technology Packages, and Connected Features All 2025 GR Supra models come equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display that can also be controlled through a rotary touch controller. GR Supra 3.0 grade comes with a 205-Watt, 10-speaker audio system standard, while the 3.0 Premium grade comes equipped with a 12-speaker 500-Watt JBL® Premium Audio System.

Wireless Qi charging is standard on the 3.0 grade equipped with a manual transmission as well as the 3.0 Premium grade. Wireless Apple CarPlay® is available on the 3.0 grade and standard on the 3.0 Premium grade. When customers upgrade to the Safety & Technology Package with JBL on the 3.0 grade, they get:

  • 12-speaker 500-watt JBL Premium Audio System
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay compatible with full screen capability (iOS only)
  • Qi Wireless Charger (AT models)
  • Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (AT models)
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Speed Limit Information
  • Parking Sensors with Emergency Braking Function
  • Toyota Supra Connect trial that includes Remote Services, Remote Maintenance, Automatic Emergency Call, Real Time Traffic Information, Stolen Vehicle Recovery and Map Updates

The Driver’s Assist Package is another available option on the 3.0 Premium grade, which includes:

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Safety and Convenience Features All GR Supra models come equipped with a number of safety features that include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning with Steering Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Brake Assist, Anti-lock Brake System, Driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System (front, side, curtain and knee airbags), Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Traction Control, and Child Restraint System on the passenger seat.

Standard convenience features include Automatic High Beams, Rearview Camera with parking aid lines, Tire Pressure Monitor System, Hill Start Assist Control, Directional Parking Lights, and 3-point seatbelts for driver and passenger. Automatic Transmission equipped GR Supra models come with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Manual Transmission equipped GR Supra models come with a traditional Cruise Control system.

Complimentary 1-year NASA Membership Purchase of any 2025 GR Supra comes with a complimentary 1-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Supra owners will enjoy a host of benefits, including one free High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) and discounted admission to NASA-sanctioned events.

Ukraine war latest: Putin says he will take Trump 'seriously' on ending war

Vladimir Putin has said Russia takes Donald Trump's declaration that he could end the war "completely seriously", although he doesn't know the details of the proposals. The US presidential candidate previously claimed he could create peace in 24 hours if he makes it to the White House.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping that he wants Turkey-China ties to continue improving.

He has also said steps taken to improve such ties would benefit both countries.

Both the Turkish and Chinese leaders met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in the Kazakh capital Astana today and discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and the fighting in Gaza.

During the meeting, Mr Erdogan called for "effective measures" by the international community to prevent either conflict from spreading.

One civilian has been killed after a ballistic missile struck the southern port city of Odesa.

Governor Oleh Kiper said at least seven others had been injured after the attack on the region and houses and port facilities had been damaged.

"The civilian port infrastructure is under attack," Mr Kiper said on Telegram .

Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian forces in the war, with many attacks aimed at the city's port facilities.

Russia denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure.

The Hungarian prime minister will meet Vladimir Putin in Moscow tomorrow, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) .

Viktor Orban will be accompanied by Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto, the outlet reports, citing an unnamed Hungarian government source.

The reported visit comes days after Mr Orban urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to consider a ceasefire to accelerate an end to the war with Russia.

Mr Orban, who is an outspoken critic of Western military aid to Ukraine and has the warmest relations of any EU leader with Mr Putin, held talks with Mr Zelenskyy during his first trip to Kyiv in more than a decade yesterday.

Mr Orban said he asked the Ukrainian leader to think about a ceasefire before the follow-up international summit Kyiv hopes to hold later this year.

Apple has removed 25 VPN mobile apps from its AppStore in Russia, following a request by Russia's state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, Interfax reports.

Demand for VPN services soared in Russia after Vladimir Putin ordered troops into Ukraine in 2022 and the authorities restricted access to some Western social media.

Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor has already blocked access to some large VPNs, but others remained available.

Images are emerging of the damage inflicted on Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine after months of Russian assault.

The Ukrainian army said today they had retreated from an area on the outskirts of the strategically important city in the Donetsk region after a 10-month battle there.

Months of relentless Russian artillery strikes have devastated Chasiv Yar, leaving homes charred.

Ukrainian commanders in the area say their resources remain stretched, largely due to a months-long gap in military assistance from the US which threw Ukraine's military onto the defensive.

Around 190,000 recruits have signed contracts to join the Russian military so far in 2024, the state-run RIA news agency reports, quoting former president Dmitry Medvedev.

Mr Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said the current average recruitment rate was about 1,000 people a day.

For context : Russia is encouraging people to sign up for the war in Ukraine by paying them above average wages.

Vladimir Putin has said Moscow has no need to enforce a new round of compulsory mobilisation because so many men are signing up on voluntary contracts.

A duo of Russian pranksters who often target and compromise people the Russian state is interested in have been given a top state award in the Kremlin, the RIA state news agency reports.

Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov, who use the aliases "Vovan and Lexus", were presented with the award by the Kremlin at a ceremony yesterday.

The award is given to Russian and foreign nationals for strengthening peace, friendship, cooperation and understanding between Moscow and other nations, among other criteria.

There was no immediate word from the Russian pranksters, who last month released footage of a video call they had with UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron after tricking him into thinking he was speaking to a former Ukrainian president.

During the hoax call, Lord Cameron thought he was speaking with former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko.

The duo are well-known inside Russia, having duped a string of politicians over the years, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and, in 2022, Britain's then-defence minister, Ben Wallace.

Vladimir Putin has said his preference for Joe Biden remains unchanged after watching fragments of the debate between the US president and Donald Trump.

Asked by a state television reporter if Mr Biden or Trump was better, if his publicly stated preference for Biden had changed after the debate, and if he had seen it, Mr Putin said: "Nothing has changed."

"Did we not know what could come? We knew," the Russian president added.

Mr Putin has several times said he feels Joe Biden is preferable as the future US president to Trump, even after Mr Biden cast the Kremlin chief as a "crazy SOB".

Mr Putin said he had seen parts of the debate between both Mr Biden and Trump but he had other things to attend to.

"I saw some fragments," Mr Putin said. "But I have enough to do."

Asked about Trump's statements that he could end the Ukraine war swiftly if he won the presidential election, Mr Putin said Russia took him seriously but had no sense of the details of any of Trump's peace proposals.

"The fact that Mr Trump, as a presidential candidate, declares that he is ready and wants to stop the war in Ukraine, we take this completely seriously," he said.

What else did Putin say today?

The Russian leader also reiterated that Moscow would not declare a ceasefire in Ukraine until Kyiv takes steps that are "irreversible" and acceptable to the Kremlin.

He said it was pointless for Russia to attempt to appeal to the Ukrainian parliament when it came to Moscow's ideas to end the conflict between the two countries.

Mr Putin said last month that Russia would end the war in Ukraine only if Kyiv agreed to drop its NATO ambitions and hand over the entirety of four provinces claimed by Moscow, demands Kyiv swiftly rejected as tantamount to surrender.

Drones allegedly struck the vicinity of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant yesterday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said, citing the administration of the occupied facility.

Russian officials yesterday claimed three drones struck an area near the plant.

The UN nuclear watchdog has now said it received reports of several drone strikes in vicinity of the site, injuring workers at Enerhodar electrical sub-station and starting fires in forest area near the plant.

IAEA experts stationed at the plant reported seeing thick smoke rising near the facility and heard explosions after they were told about an alleged drone attack by the representatives of the plant.

Director-general Rafael Grossi said: "It is extremely concerning that these drone attacks are continuing, despite the very clear dangers they present to people in Enerhodar as well as to safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

"They must stop, immediately."

The IAEA also said that before yesterday's strikes, their team had heard of military activities near the plant on most days over the past week.

What has been happening at the plant?

The nuclear facility has been under Russian control since 4 March 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Since then there have been major concerns about the safety of the plant - not least of all because heavy weapons, including shells and rockets, have hit the buildings.

Both sides blame each other.

Since Russian forces occupied the site there have been multiple power outages, which has increased fears of a nuclear disaster.

Russia's ambassador to the US has said his assignment is coming to an end, a move that would pave the way for Moscow to send a new envoy to Washington at a time when relations are at their worst in decades.

Anatoly Antonov's exit was flagged by Russia's Kommersant newspaper, which spotted a handwritten note that Mr Antonov had sent to congratulate a Moscow thinktank on its 30th anniversary.

"My assignment is coming to an end. I hope that together we will continue to defend the interests of our Fatherland!" Mr Antonov wrote in the congratulatory letter.

When asked about the matter today, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was cited by the Interfax news agency as telling reporters: "There is no reason to comment here. Everyone can have their own personal plans.

"Decisions on the appointment and change of ambassadors are made by the president."

Mr Antonov took up his role in Washington in September 2017.

Before that, he served as a deputy defence minister and as a deputy foreign minister.

College World Series highlights: Tennessee tops Texas A&M for first baseball national title

Rocky Top is now the top of the college baseball mountain.

Tennessee defeated Texas A&M 6-5 in the Men’s College World Series championship series winner-take-all game to capture the team’s first national championship in school history. The Volunteers with its 60th win became the first college baseball team to reach that mark since Wichita State won the title in 1989.

It didn’t take long for Tennessee to get on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first from Christian Moore. The Aggies boasted one of the best pitching staffs this season, but it was the Tennessee pitchers that put on a dominant showing the majority of the night that made it a frustrating night for Texas A&M. A seventh inning filled with highlight plays proved to be much-needed insurance to hold off a late rally.

With the victory, the Volunteers also broke the No. 1 overall seed curse, becoming the first team Miami (Fla.) in 1999 to win the national championship as the top ranked team in the tournament. The national championship was 127 years in the making, ending a long title drought since Tennessee began playing baseball in 1897. The reached the championship round in 1951 but lost to Oklahoma.

It’s also another milestone of SEC domination in the sport. The conference has captured its fifth championship in a row with five different schools winning the College World Series dating back to 2019.

READ ALL ABOUT IT: Celebrate Tennessee's national title with our new book

Watch Tennessee win national championship

Aaron Combs strikes out Ted Burton to win national title.

Texas A&M scores in ninth but falls short

Texas A&M is down to its final inning, but it added another score. Gavin Grahovac hit a leadoff double and two batters later, Jackson Appel brought him in to make it a 6-4 game with one out. They added another run on a wild pitch, but Aaron Combs struck out Ted Burton to end the game.

Kirby Connell ends eighth inning with strikeouts

Kirby Connell has been sensation for Tennessee, and he put an end to the Texas A&M scoring threat in the eighth inning with big-time strikeouts.

Connell struck out Kaeden Kent and Ryan Targac swinging and was pumped to end the frame as Tennessee it three outs away from a national championship with a 6-3 lead.

Texas A&M adds runs to cut deficit

Don’t count out the Aggies just yet.

A three-run seventh inning looked to be the nail in the coffin for a Tennessee victory, however Texas A&M is chipping away and making it a ballgame late.

Jackson Appel opened up the inning with a single and ended up advancing to third thanks to wild pitches from Dylan Loy. Hayden Schott then made solid contact for a single to bring in Appel, and two batters later, Caden Sorrell hit a double to left center and Schott turned on the jets to make it from first base to home to add another run. That be enough for Tony Vitello, opting to put in Kirby Connell in hopes of ending the threat.

Hunter Ensley avoids out at home to score on miraculous play

How did Hunter Ensley not get tagged out?

Tennessee outfielder Kavares Tears hit a double off the centerfield wall and Ensley boldly decided to go from first to home. The throw got to Texas A&M catcher Jackson Appel early and it looked to be an easy tag out at home. But Ensley maneuvered around the tag and his left hand touched home plate to score an incredible run and push the Volunteers ahead 6-1 heading to the eighth inning.

Tennessee has done a lot of its damage on the night with two outs. Four runs have been scored with two outs and the team is 8-for-14 in the situation.

Tennessee's Dylan Drieling hits massive home run

There's still two innings left, but Dylan Dreiling has moved Tennessee closer to its first baseball title.

Texas A&M ace reliever Evan Aschenbeck retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before Billy Amick kept the Volunteers alive with a single. Dreiling hit a high-flying ball to the sky. It wasn't clear if the ball was gonna clear the fence, but right fielder Casey Sorrell ran out of room in trying to make a leaping catch. The two-run homer made it a 5-1 game.

Texas A&M can't capitalize with RISP

There isn't much time left, and Texas A&M missed a golden opportunity to cut the deficit or take the lead.

The Aggies had Kaeden Kent and pinch runner Ryan Targac on base with the top of the lineup on deck in the seventh inning. Gavin Grahovac just missed out on a massive hit with a deep fly out to right field. Jace Laviolette looked like he had a hit get passed first baseman Blake Burke, but Christian Moore was perfectly positioned to get the ball, get the throw to first and prevent the run from scoring.

Texas A&M is now 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Texas A&M brings in Evan Aschenbeck

Texas A&M needs to prevent Tennessee from extending the lead, and it's turning to the Division I ERA leader to assure that.

The Aggies brought in Evan Aschenbeck in the sixth inning and he is likely to go the distance in hopes the offense is able to come through late. Aschenbeck led the country with a 1.39 ERA.

Texas A&M chases Zander Sechrist

Zander Sechrist was sensational on Monday, but the Aggies were able to get him out of the game thanks to a pair of singles from Jackson Appel and Hayden Schott. Tennessee turned to closer Nate Snead to get out of the jam, and it worked, capped off with a spectacular catch by Blake Burke on a lineout.

Zander Sechrist dealing, strikes out the side

Zander Sechrist has been a star for Tennessee this postseason, and he very well could be the reason why the Volunteers are national champions. He struck out Kaeden Kent, Travis Chestnut and Gavin Grahovac in the fifth inning. He now has six strikeouts on the night and allowed one run on four hits.

He doesn't appear to be slowing down, but head coach Tony Vitello said his team is getting close to going to the bullpen.

Tennessee back in front with pair of runs

The tie game didn't last long after Tennessee responded to Texas A&M's first run with scores of their own in the third inning to retake the lead 3-1.

Leading off, Blake Burke showed off the power with a double to right centerfield to start the bottom of the third inning. He moved to third base after Billy Amick grounded out, and Dylan Dreiling hit a ball to deep center field that gave Burke plenty of time to tag and score. The Volunteers weren't done in the inning with back-to-back hits from Hunter Ensley and Kavares Tears, leading to Texas A&M taking out starter Justin Lamkin for Josh Stewart.

The Volunteers weren't done scoring yet. Dean Curley welcomed Stewart with a single to bring in Ensley. However, Curley got caught trying to extend the single to second base and was tagged out to end the inning.

Bunt leads to Texas A&M score

Small ball leads to a tie game.

Travis Chestnut’s decision to bunt proved to be effective as he eventually went around the bases to score and tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning.

Chestnut’s bunt was placed perfectly in front of home plate, and Tennessee catcher Cal Stark tried to get the runner out at first when it didn’t look like he had a play. It resulted in an erratic throw that let Chestnut get to second, and a few pitches later, he stole third base to put himself in prime scoring position. Gavin Grahovac capitalized with a single to left field to bring Chestnut in for the first run of the game for the Aggies.

Another mistake from Tennessee led to Texas A&M getting two runners on base, but the Volunteers caught a break with a double play to end the inning.

Pitchers put up scoreless second inning

Tennessee and Texas A&M both got a batter on base in the second inning, but neither side was able to do much with it in a scoreless second frame.

Justin Lamkin gave up the leadoff home run in the bottom of the first and allowed a couple of runners on base afterward, but he appeared more composed in the second inning, allowing only a walk that was aided by a pitch clock violation. On the other side, Zander Sechrist is off to another promising start with two early strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Tennessee stars shine in Omaha

Some of the top people from Knoxville are in attendance to root for Tennessee to win its first baseball national championship. Inside Charles Schwab Field is Volunteers icon Peyton Manning, football coach Josh Heupel and men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes. Also joining them was country music singer Morgan Wallen, a Tennessee native who was a notable baseball player in high school before an injury sent him a different direction.

Christian Moore hits leadoff home run for Tennessee

What a start for Tennessee.

After Zander Sechrist had a 1-2-3 inning, the Volunteers got on the board quickly thanks to Christian Moore. The second baseman got perfect contact on the bat and sent the ball over the wall for a leadoff home run to give the Volunteers the early lead. It was Moore's 34th home run of the year, third-most in Division I.

Texas A&M starter Justin Lamkin allowed two more base runners but worked out of the jam to keep the score 1-0 heading to the second inning.

Tennessee starting pitcher

The Volunteers will go with Zander Sechrist on the mound to start Game 3. The left-handed senior from Buford, Georgia is 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA and 17 starts this season.

Sechrist is coming off one of his best performances with Tennessee when he was the starter in the national semifinal matchup with Florida State. He tied a career-high 6.1 innings pitched with just two runs allowed on five hits in a 7-2 win over the Seminoles. He's been on fire in the postseason; in three NCAA Tournament games this year, he has pitched 17.1 innings and has allowed only two earned runs on 15 hits with 12 strikeouts.

Texas A&M starting pitcher

Justin Lamkin will get the start for Texas A&M in the championship game. The sophomore is 3-2 season with a 5.00 ERA and 15 starts in 2024.

Although the ERA seems high, Lamkin has been excellent for the Aggies in Omaha. He pitched in both wins over Florida, including the one to send Texas A&M to the championship series, when he struck out nine Gators and gave up no runs. In eight innings in Omaha, Lamkin has 15 strikeouts and given up four hits.

Tennessee vs. Texas A&M prediction

As we look ahead to tonight’s decisive game, there are positive cases to be made for both Tennessee and Texas A&M to emerge victorious. The Aggies, despite missing out on the opportunity to clinch, came out of game two with its pitching staff in relatively good shape. A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle was able to keep bullpen ace Evan Aschenbeck in reserve after he successfully closed out game one, and one definitely likes the Aggies’ chances if they can get the ball to him with the lead in the late innings. That could be easier said than done, however, as A&M’s big bats have been largely silent outside of the big second inning on Saturday.

This brings us to the case for Tennessee, which has already gotten one solid start out of Xander Sechrist in Omaha, and coach Tony Vitello will be counting on him to deliver another. The more urgent issue for the Volunteers has been their inability to take advantage of a slew of baserunners, stranding a hefty 19 over the first two games.

One has to think, however, that if the Aggies continue to give the Vols’ big hitters chances, they’ll eventually deliver. While the concept of momentum in sports is nebulous and often fleeting, right now it’s on Tennessee’s side. It will likely be close, but we’ll take the healthier Volunteers to claim the crown. -- Eddie Timanus

Texas A&M players to watch

  • How the Aggies can get the lead will depend on their hitting.   Jace LaViolette  and Gavin Grahovac topped 20 home runs with Grahovac providing the only run Sunday with a long ball. Kaeden Kent , son of former major leaguer Jeff Kent, is providing the hottest bat. Pressed into action due to a season-ending injury to Braden Montgomery, Kent has hit .450 provided a home run and 7 RBI in Omaha.
  • The Aggies will turn to Justin Lampkin to start Game 3 with the sophomore hoping to continue his success after throwing scoreless eight innings across two outings against Florida at the CWS. Waiting to pick up the baton is ace reliever Evan Achenbeck , who leads the nation in ERA. He'll be rested after two spotless innings Friday and could be summoned well before that if the Aggies have the early lead.

Tennessee players to watch

  • Zander Sechrist gets the ball for the Volunteers in Game 3. The senior lefty is second on the staff with a 3.22 ERA after two clutch starts in the postseason - a win against Evansville in their decisive super regional game and a strong effort against a powerful Florida State lineup that sent Tennessee to the championship series. Nate Sneed notched his sixth save in Sunday's win and could be called on again.
  • Where the Tennessee offense gets its offense from is anybody's guess. With a lineup that boasts five players that reached 20 home runs, there's danger everywhere. Christian Moore and Blake Burke , the two leading hitters, are the tablesetters at the top of the lineup. Dylan Dreiling hit a key home run Sunday and is second on the team in RBI with 72, one behind Moore.
