self guided tour costa rica

Costa Rica Itinerary: 7-10 Days

So you’ve found yourself with a week of vacation, and you came to the brilliant conclusion that you want to visit the land of Pura Vida. What all can you comfortably fit into a 7-10 day Costa Rica itinerary ?

Here is the Costa Rica itinerary I suggest after visiting 3 times and spending over 12 weeks here. With just 7-10 days, this shows the variety this country offers! I did this route when my brother visited me while I was studying abroad . It’s aggressive, but manageable!

Here is my itinerary :.

Some links in this post are affiliate links, meaning if you book or buy something through one of these, I may earn a small commission (at no additional cost to you!).

Find a rental car for your Costa Rica trip ! 🚙

DAY 1 – The City of San Jose

Since most visitors fly into the sjo airport, this is a good place to start while this city can provide a somewhat average view of the country as a first impression, it really isn’t so bad. i lived and studied in san jose when i was in college, and there are plenty of nice areas to explore., on day one, you can visit the teatro nacional , the many wonderful museums ( museo de jade is a personal favorite), the tourist market, or grab dinner and a churro from a street vendor. | more ideas of things to do in san jose cost rica itinerary. .

San Jose, Costa Rica Itinerary, Downtown

LODGING: See my San Jose Hotel Recommendations!

Day 2- la fortuna : arenal volcano & hot springs, leave san jose in the morning, and head to this central part of the country. i suggest taking a shuttle from san jose to la fortuna , and then checking into a hotel in the town of la fortuna . you can also take the public bus, but it will take up more time., once there, book a guided tour, or visit arenal volcano on your own. then, visit the natural volcanic hot springs for a dip. i’ve been to the thermal spa and resorts at both baldí  and tabacón , and each were amazing, if you aren’t staying there as a guest, consider getting a hotel day pass to enjoy the amenities ( here is one for baldi hot springs ).

Read my post on more things to do in La Fortuna / Arenal

LODGING: La Fortuna Hotel Ideas

Day 3 – monteverde cloud forest: santa elena town, in the morning, take a shuttle from la fortuna to monteverde , the coniferous cloud forest . with narrow, one way, mountain roads and cliff-side views the entire way, it can be a little scary, but all part of the experience, the base of exploration for monteverde cloud forest is the town of santa elena . after exploring town, head to the national park entry and spend the day hiking the trails and walking across the iconic suspended bridges above the forest canopy ., we also did a night-hike tour for some extra wildlife sightseeing. if only for the thrill of being in the jungle at night and seeing lots of giant insects and maybe a sloth, it is worth it.

Monteverde, Hanging Bridge, Costa Rica

LODGING :  Cabinas Vista al Golfo : A rustic place with a gorgeous, sweeping view

Day 4 – monteverde: zip lining, since zip-lining or doing a “ canopy tour ” is a quintessential part of any costa rica visit, its best to do it here in monteverde the zip-lining here is among the best in the world, we went with the company selvatura (i highly recommend), and did the 3 hour canopy tour . we had so much fun even with the rain. the company provides round-trip transport from your hotel too. when we returned to town, we got dinner at a tree-house restaurant ..

Monteverde, Zip Lining, Santa Elena, Costa Rica

LODGING :  Cabinas Vista al Golfo : A rustic place with a gorgeous view

Day 5 – manuel antonio: quepos town, we took a shuttle from monteverde to quepos , leaving at 8:30am. we arrived to quepos (the base point for exploring manuel antonio national park ) at 2pm. i would advise a shuttle service as it is another long drive (and on a budget, this is the fastest way to do it), spend the afternoon exploring quepos town, and visit the public beach for a swim. the national park closes early, so i say save it for the next day so you can get the most out of your entry ticket..

Manuel Antonio Beach, Costa Rica

LODGING : Hostel Plinio : A tree-house style hostel with great views and a beautiful pool

Day 6 – manuel antonio national park, this park is crowded and full of visitors, but for good reason it is pure jungle , and you are almost guaranteed several wildlife sightings . 🦥, we did not hire a naturalist guide ( which you will be hounded by near the entry ), and still saw 3 wild sloths, many capuchin monkeys ( babies too ), and several reptiles while walking the trails., walk slow, explore, swim in the warm ocean , watch out for thieving raccoons on the beach , 🦝and you’ll have a fantastic time costa rica itinerary.

capuchin, manuel antonio, quepos, costa rica

DAY 7 – Manuel Antonio National Park

We originally had not scheduled two days here, but we loved it so much we re-arranged our schedule with this extra day you can explore more of the park, the town, or do various beach activities . there are plenty of companies offering kayaking, surfing lessons, boating, fishing trips , etc. 🏖️, take a shuttle from quepos to san jose late at night ( arranged in advance ), and you can sleep through the boring drive back without wasting much daylight..

Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Costa Rica Beach

DAY 8 – Tortuguero National Park

Leave your san jose hotel early in the morning, and jump on a van to the caribbean province of limón because the area where tortuguero national park lies is very remote, i recommend using a tour company . you can go it alone, but with limited time this is the best option., we went with a company that no longer exists, but there are loads of tortuguero tour options . the journey there is full of  wildlife, and the ride on the tiny boat you take out into the canals towards the park is an unforgettable experience . this is one of my favorite destinations i’ve ever been.

Tortuguero National Park, Exploradores Outdoors, Costa Rica

DAY 9 – Tortuguero National Park

wrap up your hiking, boating, and wildlife sighting and begin the drive back towards the big city. once back in san jose, relax, and eat some casado with a side of imperial beer for the final time..

Tortuguero National Park, Exploradores Outdoors, Costa Rica

LODGING : See my San Jose Hotel Recommendations!

Day 10- airport – adios to costa rica, head to the airport, and back home. if you leave on day 11 – i would recommend extending the trip by taking a cultural day-trip out of the san jose area, perhaps to visit the impressive nearby poas volcano , or spending another day in tortuguero national park..

Costa Rica, Pura Vida

Great tips! I’ve got my trip almost completely planned, and it was very reassuring to see it matches a lot of what you recommend. Thanks!!

Yikes! Very ambitious! We did Manuel Antonio, Monteverde and Arenal in 12 days and felt rushed. I’d recommend 3 days in each area and a day for travel – keeping in mind travel time to get to each is 3-4 hours. Such a great country!

Yes it definitely would have been better if we had more time in each of the destinations! I had already been in Costa Rica for 60 days before my friends came to meet me, so while I had plenty of time I think my friends were a bit rushed- but I just wanted them to get a little taste of all the amazing things it has to offer 🙂

Great suggestions about Costa Rica. Been wanting to go ever since my kid spent two week a decade ago,

You really should go if you get the chance! Very safe place to visit, beautiful nature, friendly people, delicious food, the list goes on 🙂

Hi! I am planning a 10 day Honeymoon in Costa Rica from Nov 26 – Dec 5! I have a similar proposed itinerary… I was wondering if you went to Puerto Viejo? I am thinking of heading there instead of Tortuguero National Park -I would love to hear your experience there and why you may choose one location over another.

Great itinerary! Thinking about going for spring break and this sounds great! How much does this itinerary cost about? (Taking shuttle buses and cheaper priced hotels or hostels)

Hi Sarai- I’ll send you an email! Can you let me know what it is?

Hey Michelle, could you also let me know how much this all cost (trying to do it on more of a budget)

If you could go to Tortuguero or Corcovado National Park (along with Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio) – which would you choose and why?

Hi Sally- It’s hard to say because they are all so great! I have not been to Corcovado, but I know Tortuguero does not disappoint- so much amazing natural baeuty!

Hey Michelle, very nice tips 🙂 Friends and i also will travel around 10-12 days in Costa Rica and nearly have the same spots like you recommended. We will arrive from Nicaragua and start our journey in Liberia. We are thinking about renting a car for 8-9 days? Would you recommend this or is everything also good accessible by bus? Heard Costa Rica is a lot more expensive than Nicaragua. Car would cost per person around 15 dollar a day.

Thank you very much in advance

[…] there are a fair few volcanoes in Costa Rica! Visiting a Costa Rica volcano is a highlight of any Costa Rica itinerary, and in this article I will tell you […]

I am planning to go this spring with my 10 yo. the itinerary looks fab. Do you recommend renting a car? does this speed up the full experience? thank you

Hi Francesca! I’ve not personally rented a car for Costa Rica, but I do know the roads are overall very nice and it would likely be a fairly stress-free experience to rent a car, and yes I think would allow more time and freedom at the destinations!

Discovering the wonderful secrets hidden in this forest means finding a wildlife sanctuary; the high density of biodiversity makes our trails a unique place for observing species spotted along the way.

When going on the self-guided tour, pay special attention to the different layers of the rainforest, from the treetops, the understory and the forest floor; this way you will be able to appreciate many of the species housed by this spectacular biological corridor.

I discovered unique species such as the Mica Pajarera snake.

Our family of 4 visited Hanging Bridges on October 13, 2020 and did the self-guided tour. We appeared to be the only ones in the park that morning due presumably to reduced tourism because of COVID-19. Needless to say, having the entire place to ourselves was pretty amazing. We purchased our tickets in advance online and after washing our hands (Costa Rica COVID protocols are particularly good) were introduced to the park / trails by the very nice person at the reception desk. We were then on our way exploring the trails and well-manicured grounds. All-in-all we spent about 1.5-2 hours walking the roughly 3.1kms. Our family including young kids had a blast exploring the rainforest, crossing the bridges and even were lucky enough to see some spider monkeys. It was a fantastic place and definitely worth the price of admission, especially since kids were free. One tip, if you are also going to visit La Fortuna Waterfall look to see if there is a combined package (we missed out on one after realizing after already buying standalone tickets). Highly recommend if you are in the La Fortuna area!

Very well maintained park with good focus on sustainability. Nice bathroom facilities and very friendly staff. Would definitely come again!

Excellent service, great staff, great trip overall.

Fun walk through the forest and hanging bridges

Staff was friendly and hospitable. Went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Views were gorgeous! Trail well kept.

This is a lovely park, even for a casual stroll without a guide. The bridges are exciting and having a restaurant available at the end of the journey was a great finishing touch!

I uttered the word “wow” more times on this day in Mistico than I have in 5 months of living in Costa Rica. Wonderful, beautiful, healthy, spectacular.

Wonderful experience! We would definitely visit again.

Very enjoyable time. Easy to follow, well made trail. We saw more wildlife than anticipated. Good food at the cafe. Definitely recommend Mistico!

The Best Self-Drive Tours and Itineraries for Costa Rica

Costa Rica Self Drive Vacation | Tico Travel

Self-drive tours in Costa Rica offer independent travelers the opportunity to explore the country at their own pace and on their own schedule. These tours typically include a rental car and a pre-planned itinerary, which can include stops at popular tourist destinations such as national parks, beaches, and wildlife reserves.

This type of travel is a great option for those who want to experience the natural beauty of Costa Rica in a more authentic and independent way, and for those who want to avoid the crowds of organized group tours.

However, it is important to note that driving in Costa Rica can be challenging due to the country’s winding roads and heavy traffic, so it is recommended that only experienced drivers take on a self-drive tour.

These 3 road trips are for the more adventurous types who are looking to see Costa Rica on their own but at the same time with a basic itinerary to follow. You can use my suggestions to get an idea of some of the areas in Costa Rica you would like to get to by car and the hotels you would like to stay in.

Ready to see where road ahead leads to? Lets go!

1. The Rain Forest and Volcano Road Trip

Day 1 – arrive.

Get your airfare to San Jose and stay your first night in San Jose. I would recommend some place towards the airport as San Jose traffic horrible and there really is no reason to go to San Jose, as a tourist.  So take hotel shuttle to the Best Western Irazu or if you want to stay close to downtown look at the Hotel Grano de Oro .

Day 2 – Arenal Volcano

When you rent your 4×4 car , before arriving,  then will ask you where you are going to pick it up. Tell them the hotel in San Jose and the time and it will be there, this morning delivered to the hotel. Get that and start up your GPS , (which  you can rent from the car rental agency) use Waze , or your phone and go to Volcan Arenal, one of the most active volcanos in the world.

In route you will pass through Zarcero, famous for the sculpted bushes surrounding its picturesque church.

Option: Going a few miles out of your way you can also visit Sarchí, home of Costa Rica’s traditional brightly painted ox carts and a great stop for buying beautiful items made of Costa Rican hardwoods.

Once here I would tell you stay at either Tabacon or if you have some bucks (but well worth every buck) at the Springs Hotel

Day 3 – Monteverde

Get up, eat some Gallo Pinto (my favorite breakfast), and then look around Arenal some more and  then start up your GPS again and get on your way to Monteverde.

With the driving options, go with the the scenic drive which will take you around Lake Arenal and through lush rolling hills until you get to Monteverde .

While in Monteverde explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (get a guide)   or one of the other private reserves, or take a horseback ride to a 200 ft waterfall. There are a lot of options here but you could stay at the Monteverde Lodge which is a little outside of the center or the Hotel Belmar which has been there forever!

Day 4 – Departure

OK now you need to make your way back home. On your way back home or before you move on to your next destination – Explore the main community of the area, Santa Elena.

You may just want to take advantage of banks and supermarkets or visit the local cheese factory, women’s cooperative (CASEM) or one of the many art and craft galleries to purchase some souvenirs or gifts for the folks back home. Local coffee, wood sculptures, embroidered clothing, and paintings by resident artists are just some of the offerings available.

2. The Eco Drive Road Trip

Costa Rica Wildlife | Tico Travel

Costa Rica is one of the smallest countries in the world and still has 5% of the total of the world’s biodiversity. Evidence of this is that you can find in this green and friendly country 12 different types of forest, most of them still pristine.

With this itinerary you will experience the unspoiled beaches on the South Pacific, the most amazing Cloud forest with lots of Quetzals and finally the rainforest near one of the most actives volcanoes and still little known in Costa Rica.

One important thing is that you can experience all this and still be away from crowds!

Day 1: San Jose

As I mentioned in the previous tour, get your airfare to San Jose and stay your first night in San Jose. I would recommend some place towards the airport as San Jose traffic horrible and there really is no reason to go to San Jose, in my opinion.

So take hotel shuttle to the Best Western Irazu or if you want to stay closer to downtown or a something more “local” look at the Hotel Grano de Oro . If you decide to stay downtown and if you have the time, check out the jade museum and the Teatro Nacional.

Day 2 – 4:  Domincal and Uvita

As I mentioned in the first and shorter itinerary above, while you are renting your 4×4 car , let them know where you decided to stay so they can deliver in the morning.

Then take off to Uvita and making a stop at Dominical beach. Uvita is one of the prettiest beaches on the South Pacific Coast with lots of nature and wildlife.  While you are way there you will pass over Cerro de la Muerte one of the highest and coolest mountains in Costa Rica and again try to make a stop at Domincal,

Once there you’ll get to experience some of the rural Costa Rica culture and beautiful vistas, you can also check out the the areas of primary tropical rainforest and unspoiled coast, all made possible at La Cusinga .

While there you can do hiking in the private reserve or any of the one day tours available in this location such as Corcovado National Park, Cano Island, whale and dolphins watching tour, waterfalls, snorkeling and much more .

Day 5 – 6: Savegre Cloud Forest

After breakfast with the sounds of nature start your drive to Savegre Cloud Forest. You will drive back part way back on the road that you took when coming from San Jose.

Get ready for a change of temperature, you are now heading to one of the coolest areas in our tropical country ( you probably will want to pack a sweater or light jacket). The cloud forest in this area is one of the most pristine in Costa Rica and it is easy to find a lot of different bird species plus lots of beautiful tropical flowers.

I would suggest you stay at the hotel Savegre   has a natural reserve made up of 400 hectares of forest (about 1,000 acres), 80% of which is virgin, while the remainder is newer growth, including reforestation programs using native species – especially laurels.

The area is frequently visited by eco-tourists from around the world who come to enjoy the large diversity of plant life, including oak and laurel trees, orchids and bromelias.  This animal life includes more than 170 species of birds – including the magnificent Quetzal – as well as numerous mammals, amphibians, and insects.

Day 7 – 8: Turrialba

On the morning of the 7th day ( sounds biblical), you will leave the Cloud forest and take the road in direction of Turrialba, towards the last destination of your vacation.

This small country side town has a lot to offer. You should look into staying at the Wagelia Espino Blanco, one of the nicest sustainable hotels in this country. This hotel also has a private reserve that contains an important variety of animals such as; vipers, pavas, small raccoons, armadillos, tepezcuites, as well as a great variety of butterflies and birds.

Its name comes from a tree characteristic of the area, the Espino Blanco (White Thorn), which is in the process of disappearance. In the reserve there are many tree species that really must be seen to be believed.

While there. look into doing a day tour to Guayabo National Monument. It is believed that the site was inhabited from 1500 BC until about 1400 AD, and though very little has been excavated, you can see parts of roadways, aqueducts, pools, tombs and the foundations of homes. You can also do white water rafting tours or see the Turrialba Volcano, so there is a lot to do here, you just need to decide whats best for you.

Day 9:  San Jose

Its time to drive back to San Jose and back to the Irazu Hotel or Grano de Oro. Arrange to have the car picked up at the hotel as it just makes it easier and less stressful than doing it on the day you leave as most o the car rental companies are not at the airport and you will have to drop off there and then take a shuttle to the airport.

More hassle than its worth and the hotel can arrange for a shuttle to take you the airport. Take that shuttle to the airport and be sure to check in 3 hours before your flight

3. The Basic Fly and Drive Road Trip

Wildlife of Costa Rica | Tico Travel

With this road trip itinerary although its more budget and by that I mean I am recommending more moderate hotels and renting a more moderately priced car , but still a 4×4,  you still visit a great variety of what Costa Rica has to offer in some of the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth.

Day 1:  San Jose

Get your airfare into San Jose and get the free shuttle to the Adventure Inn   located just 10 minutes away from San Jose downtown. If you arrive early enough take a taxi, uber or ask the hotel about getting you to downtown  San Jose where you should visit the Teatro Nacional and the Gold and Jade Museums.

Day 2: Tortuguero

On the second day you will visit one of the most exciting areas in Costa Rica, the Tortuguero National Park and look into staying at the Mawamba Lodge. Your road trip will start when you return as you will need to take a domestic flight into this area as there aren’t any roads but the lodge should be able to set this up for you.

Tortuguero is the most important area in the Western Caribbean for the nesting grounds of the green sea turtle (Chelonia Midas), which can be seen from July to October.

This region abounds with rich flora and fauna. Its several waterways allow all kinds of life to grow and develop in a Primary and Secondary Tropical Rain Forest.

Orchids, birds, monkeys, crocodiles, sloths , toucans and many other species, can be seen all over the area. A great way to spend time in the Costa Rica forest! Return to Adventure Inn for second night.

Day 3 – 5: Arenal

Early in the morning get your 4×4 rental delivered to your hotel. The car rental companies will do this for free and its alot easier then going to one of their offices.  Make sure you check over the car for any scratches or dents before signing. You may also want to check out my post on car rental insurance .

Once you get the car, get out the GPS, if you don’t have one you can get one on Amazon ,  or use Waze and then take off for the beautiful three hour drive to Arenal Volcano.

Once you get there you can relax as no more driving is required. You will just spend the day the next 2 days exploring Arenal and the waterfalls around the area. If you are really motivated you can check out the tour to cano negro.  Try staying the Arenal Volcano Inn,   and after checking inn take the hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall or just explore this beautiful area.

Day 5 – 7:  Manuel Antonio Beach

Off to the beach and to one of the best in Costa Rica. Drive down the Pacific Coast to the old fishing village Quepos and next to the world famous Manuel Antonio National Park.  There is plenty to do in this area such as rafting, horseback riding and some world class fishing.

You should also take a walk through  Manuel Antonio and rest for a while on its beautiful beach. Also since you the car take a drive down to Dominical.

Although its mostly famous for the surfing, its a great way to spend a half a day. There are plenty of places to stay here are there are hotels up and down the hill that separates Quepos and Manuel Antonio, for budget hotels you should check out either the Mono Azul or the La Foresta Nature Resort

Day 8 – 9: San Jose

Drive back to San Jose and head back to the Adventure Inn where you will spend your last night. I would recommend that you have the car company come pick up the car at the Inn and so its one less thing to be concerned about on the day you are leaving.

Since the Inn has a shuttle to the airport there really is no reason not too and you also save a day on the rental car price.  Make sure on the day you leave you get to the airport about 3 hours ahead of time.

You can modify these 3 road trip itineraries for a Airbnb or other hotels that might fit your travel style better and of course you can consider staying longer or shorter time at any of these places depending on what you want to see and do.

Additional details

Tours to Costa Rica usually focus on a combination of eco travel, wildlife, and adventure. You will usually find a tour that weighs one or two of these themes above the other.

If it’s your first visit to Costa Rica, try to find a tour that hits upon what Costa Rica is most known for. These include Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud F orest . Both attractions are extremely popular and are normally included in Costa Rica tour itineraries.

Outdoors and Active Costa Rica Tours

Most Costa Rica tours don’t have a heavy emphasis on cultural or historical sight seeing. Simply because the wildlife and outdoor tour activities are enough to occupy the days!

Wildlife lovers will want for nothing in Costa Rica, and most itineraries do focus heavily on the diverse wildlife found in Costa Rica’s rainforests and cloud forests. Some may not include Tortuguero National Park - and if you don’t want to miss observing sea turtles nesting or hatching be sure to find a tour that includes this park!

Some of the most famous animals you can see relatively easily in Costa Rica include the red-eyed tree frog, crocodiles, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, tapirs, basilisk lizards, coatimundis (the Costa Rican version of a raccoon!), and two kinds of sloth. A night safari might allow you to see some of the rarer or more elusive animals in the country, such as jaguars, kinkajous, tarantulas, and ocelots. Don't forget to look up - night is the best time to see snakes as they stalk for sleeping birds in the trees above.

If you decide to go snorkeling or scuba diving , you may run into bottlenose dolphins (or go see them on a dolphin swim !), green sea turtles and leatherbacks, sharks, and all kinds of tropical fish. Whale watching is  also a great way to see orcas and humpback, blue, beaked, and pilot whales.

If you are interested in going on a birdwatching trip , there are also tons of beautiful and exotic birds. There are green and scarlet macaws,  toucans, dozens of species of hummingbirds, and all kinds of birds of paradise -- including the rare national bird of Costa Rica, the Resplendent Quetzal.

Weather in Costa Rica

It gets quite wet and humid in Costa Rica, and the country is prone to hurricane conditions. Tour activities may change depending on the time of year, but generally you can expect to be walking through the rainforest in every sense of the word.

Most tours in Costa Rica will provide wet weather gear, though it is a good idea to pack light weight waterproof clothing for the majority of your tour. Long sleeves and pants can go a long way toward insect protection as well.

Eco Lodge Accommodation on Costa Rica Tours

Costa Rica has a long history as a leader in eco travel, and a majority of trips to Costa Rica have an eco, sustainable, and green travel theme . These will often feature a stay at an eco lodge, or even a treehouse! These can vary from luxury accommodations to comfortable-but-basic.

Don’t expect terribly reliable internet and electricity - particularly in keeping with the eco lodge approach! These establishments are designed to be as eco conscious as possible, and your tour will reveal new ways you can help contribute and be a responsible traveler.

We know the Monteverde Sky Walk Hanging Bridges well because we’ve been exploring them for years

The monteverde sky walk hanging bridges experience, the long walk vs. the short walk, it’s easy to miss the long walk’s 6th bridge. here’s why and how you can avoid doing so., hanging bridge sway and how to minimize bridge movement, monteverde sky walk hanging bridges tour guide requirement, tours of the monteverde sky walk hanging bridges, monteverde sky walk hanging bridges duration and tour times, monteverde sky walk hanging bridges unguided/self-guided tour costs, monteverde sky walk hanging bridges guided tour costs, monteverde sky walk hanging bridges age and weight limits, young travelers and travelers with disabilities.

As we mentioned in our related blog post Treetopia Park (Formerly Sky Adventures Monteverde): Zip-lining, Hanging Bridges, And Tram Rides In The Cloud Forest , we’ve explored Monteverde and its hanging bridges for years, dating back to the mid-2000s. In that article, we detailed the Treetopia Park ‘s entire Monteverde operation, including the Monteverde Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , Monteverde Tree Tram Aerial Tram Ride , Monteverde Sky Walk Hanging Bridges , Monteverde Sky Climb Arboreal Tree-Climbing tour , Monteverde Vertigo Drop (free-fall activity), and additional on-site offerings, from parking and lockers to dining opportunities. If you’re interested in learning about the various tours, activities, and services that are available at the Treetopia Park , please see the article referenced above. If you’re merely interested in learning about the Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges , please continue reading below.

best hanging bridges in Costa Rica

In stark contrast to the Treetopia Park ‘s Tree Tram Aerial Tram Ride and Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , both of which invite participants to spy on the cloud forest from above, the park’s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges provide a unique opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s cloud forest from within.

More specifically, if you visit the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges , you’ll stroll through roughly 2.5-kilometers of dense, secondary forest amid much of the biodiversity that Costa Rica (and the Monteverde region in particular) is known for. Spotting and/or hearing fauna along the walk is common; during our visits, we regularly see monkeys playing in the trees and climbing on the cables that support the bridges. Although you’ll cover plenty of solid ground as you traverse the park’s nature trails , most impressive are the long, metal hanging bridges that are suspended high above the forest floor . You’ll be amazed by the majestic beauty of Monteverde’s deep and verdant cloud forest as you make your way across each bridge, completely immersing yourself in nature.

Monteverde Sky Walk Hanging Bridges trails

The start of the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges experience requires hikers to decide between the “Long Walk” or the “Short Walk.” Here’s what you should know about both routes before choosing either one.

The 2.5-kilometer long walk is the Treetopia Park ‘s complete hanging bridges circuit. It’s a circular trail that departs from the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center and loops around the back of the park before returning to the trailhead. In contrast, the short walk is only a portion (roughly half) of the long walk. It, too, is a circular trail that departs from the operations center. It forms a smaller loop within the larger loop that forms the long walk. The two trails (i.e., the long walk and the short walk) overlap in places. If you complete the long walk’s full course, you’ll complete the short walk as part of the journey.

The long walk covers the entirety of the park. It not only provides a longer walk, it also provides access to a part of the park that’s the least visited and is the most likely to provide wildlife-spotting opportunities. The long walk also provides a more difficult hike, not only because you’ll cover a greater distance than the distance traveled during the short walk, but because the long walk has more inclines and declines. In contrast, the short walk minimizes hike duration and difficulty. The short walk is your best option if your time is limited and/or you’d prefer to explore the park’s easiest course.

If you take the long walk, you’ll find that the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde are comprised of six hanging bridges in total. Here’s how the various hanging bridges compare with one another according to bridge length and height:

Sky Walk hanging bridge details for the Treetopia Park Bridge #1: 66 meters long / 15 meters high Bridge #2: 122 meters long / 49 meters high Bridge #3: 114 meters long / 17 meters high Bridge #4: 125 meters long / 36 meters high Bridge #5: 236 meters long / 50 meters high Bridge #6: 48 meters long / 15 meters high Total hanging bridges distance: 711 meters

If you take the short walk, you’ll encounter four hanging bridges in total. Specifically, you’ll cross Bridge #3, Bridge #4, Bridge #5, and Bridge #6 detailed above.

Though the trail that’s trekked during the long walk forms a loop, a section of the trail splits into two paths at one point, leading hikers in different, albeit parallel, directions for several meters. Further up the trail, the two split paths reconnect, so regardless of which path you choose to follow, it will return you to the long walk’s loop. It’s important to know that each of the two paths have a hanging bridge of their own, which represent two of the Treetopia Park ‘s six hanging bridges (Bridge #5 and Bridge #6). Many travelers who complete the long walk’s full loop cross only five hanging bridges in total because they explore only one of the two paths encountered when the trail splits (i.e., they cross either Bridge #5 or Bridge #6, not both).

In order to cross all six hanging bridges in the park, first you’ll need to choose the long walk, not the short walk. When you encounter the fork in the trail after you cross Bridge #4, choose one of the two paths that you’re presented with and proceed to cross that path’s hanging bridge (the path to the left leads to Bridge #5 and the path to the right leads to Bridge #6; both paths eventually lead back to the trailhead). Then, backtrack along the same path, retracing your steps over the hanging bridge you crossed moments before, and return to the fork in the road. From there, take the other path, cross over its hanging bridge, and continue on your way.

A common question we receive about the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges (and hanging bridges is general, regardless of where they’re located in Costa Rica) is whether the bridges move and/or sway when people cross them. The quick answer to this questions is: “Yes, the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges move when you walk across them.” The more elaborate answer to the question is: “Yes, the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges move slightly when you walk across them, but they don’t sway greatly from side to side as you may envision a rope bridge doing. What you’re most likely to feel when you walk across a hanging bridge is a teetering beneath your feet as the bridge’s metal floor panels adjust to your footsteps.”

To best minimize movement as you cross a hanging bridge,  walk in the middle of the bridge  to avoid shifting your weight to either side.  Hold onto both sides of the bridge with your hands for support  (again, to avoid shifting your weight to one side if you happen to lose your balance when you walk), and  walk slowly . The faster you walk, the more the metal floor panels will teeter from side to side.  If possible, don’t cross a hanging bridge when other people are on it.  Sometimes the steps of another hiker at the opposite end of the bridge can cause the entire bridge to move.

The  Sky Walk Hanging Bridges Tour  that is operated by the  Treetopia Park  is a guided tour. This being said, it is not a requirement to explore the  Sky Walk Hanging Bridges  with a tour guide.

Instead of paying the  Treetopia Park  the cost of their guided hanging bridges tour, you may pay them their hanging bridges entrance fee, which permits  access to the hanging bridge trail for unguided use.  Regardless of whether you experience the guided  Sky Walk Hanging Bridges Tour  or explore the hanging bridges on your own,  an advance reservation for the  Treetopia Park  is recommended.

At the Treetopia Park , you can explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges on your own (i.e., without a tour guide), as a standalone guided tour (i.e., with a tour guide), or as part of a combo tour (i.e., with or without a tour guide, and in combination with one or more of the Treetopia Park ‘s other on-site activities). Combo tour options include coupling the hanging bridge experience with either the Tree Tram Aerial Tram Ride or the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour . Note that because the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour automatically includes a one-way tram ride (see above for details), if you reserve a combo tour that joins the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges with the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining tour , you’ll get the Tree Tram Aerial Tram Ride too.

How much it costs to tour the Monteverde Sky Walk Hanging Bridges

Despite being a beloved Costa Rica attraction, the Treetopia Park ‘s prices are markedly fair and some of the least expensive for hanging bridge experiences at Costa Rica’s top destinations. When compared to the costs for the Treetop Walkways Hanging Bridges , which are just up the road from Treetopia at the Selvatura Park , the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges cost $10.00 less per adult for an unguided tour and $16.00 less per adult for a guided tour (or $19.75 and $28.25 less per adult, respectively, if you use a Pura Vida! eh? discount to access the hanging bridges), making either option an excellent deal.

There is currently no minimum age limit or maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who want to explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park.

Exploring the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges is a family-friendly activity. If you’ll be traveling with kids, it’s important to know that children (ages 0-4 years) are welcome to explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park for free with a paying adult.

Part, but not all, of the trail at the Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges is wheelchair-accessible.

Costa Rica Sightseeing: 10 Must-Visit Places

self guided tour costa rica

Costa Rica is a traveler’s paradise, home to an incredible range of natural and cultural attractions. Majestic volcanoes, lush cloud forests, stunning beaches, abundant wildlife—it’s all there.

Whether you’re an adventurous explorer, a nature enthusiast, or a history buff, Costa Rica’s remarkable landscapes and intriguing heritage are sure to impress. If you’re planning a trip to the area, there are a few must-visit places for sightseeing in Costa Rica, from the captivating symmetry of the Arenal Volcano to the surreal blue waters of the Rio Celeste.

1. Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano , one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural landmarks, is a must-see while in the area. It stands at approximately 5,353 feet or 1,633 meters, towering over the surrounding land as an imposing guard. This symmetrical volcano roared back to life after decades of dormancy in 2010, creating multiple new craters. However, since then, it’s been lying dormant, although it’s not uncommon to see columns of ash and lava flows.

Today, the volcano draws countless tourists to its slopes every year, many of whom come to witness the breathtaking views from hiking trails around it or soak in the hot springs heated by its geothermal activity.

If you’re in the area, it’s well worth a stop. And, if you’re up for a stroll, there are plenty of hikes in the area that give stunning views of the volcano. Or, if you prefer a relaxing approach to your vacations, stop for a soothing soak in the nearby hot springs (some even have great views of the volcano!).

2. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is another must-visit when in Costa Rica. It’s a perfect place for sightseers, especially if you’re up for a stroll through the reserve’s many trails. The forest, often shrouded in mist, offers an enthralling, almost mystical feel.

It’s teeming with dense vegetation and is home to all sorts of plants and animal species, including over 400 species of birds. Given its abundant bird population, Monteverde is a great spot for birdwatching.

We think it’s a great addition to a sightseeing itinerary, especially if you want to capture some magical pictures. The contrast of the mist filtering through the rich, green canopy makes for a striking photo. You can even get some Insta-worthy snapshots on the hanging bridge, which is surrounded by dense vegetation.

3. Manuel Antonio National Park

If you want to get a splash of everything in one stop, the Manuel Antonio National Park is a worthwhile stop. It’s home to dense rainforests, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. The park is situated on the central Pacific coast, and while it’s not as large as other national parks, it’s one of the most-visited parks in Costa Rica.

In the rainforest, you’ll find all sorts of accessible trails suitable for all fitness levels. The main trails are well-marked, providing easy access to the park’s beaches and viewpoints. For example, the trail to Punta Catedral is a top pick for its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean (this was one of our favorites).

While you stroll, keep an eye out for wildlife. The park is known for its remarkable biodiversity. You might see capuchin monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and all sorts of bird species in the greenery around the trails, so keep your eyes peeled!

Beyond the rainforest, you’ll find marvelous white-sand beaches flanked by stunning turquoise waters. The beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. We always appreciate a relaxing afternoon nap on the beach, and this park was the perfect setting for it.

Cartago, Costa Rica’s former capital, is a must-visit for history buffs. It boasts a rich history, home to some of the country’s most significant historical sites. For example, it’s home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Angels, a beautiful pilgrimage site with captivating Byzantine architecture. It stands as a testament to Cartago’s religious importance, both past and present.

In the surrounding area, you’ll find more must-see sights, such as the Irazu Volcano and the Orosi Valley. The Irazu Volcano is the highest volcano in Costa Rica, boasting a lunar-like landscape, complete with beautiful crater lakes. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans from the summit.

The Orosi Valley offers a combination of colonial-era churches and lush green hills, perfect for scenic drives. It’s a picture-perfect spot, especially with the varied terrain blanketed in rich greens.

5. Tortuguero National Park

If you’re up for an adventure, take a trip to the Amazon of Costa Rica, Tortuguero National Park. It’s remote, and you can only access it by boat or plane, but it’s well worth visiting. It’s a network of canals, rivers, and lagoons, all flanked by dense rainforest.

It’s world-famous for its sea turtle nesting sites. Between July and October, green turtles make their way ashore to lay their eggs. If your timing is right and you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the turtles laying their eggs.

Beyond the turtles, Tortuguero is home to diverse wildlife, including jaguars, manatees, monkeys, and over 300 species of birds. If you want to observe the wildlife in their natural habitat, take a boat tour along the park’s waterways. It’s a great way to spot the creatures as they go about their daily business without bothering them.

6. Corcovado National Park

Located on the Osa Peninsula, Corcovado National Park is another must-see. It’s another remote and wild park, covering a whopping 164 square miles of rainforest, mangroves, and beaches. It’s often described as one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

While there, you might spot all four of Costa Rica’s monkey species, plus tapirs, pumas, and scarlet macaws. Some animals are more elusive than others, so if you want the best chances of spotting them, a guided tour led by an experienced naturalist is your best bet. We’ve done a few of these tours and highly recommend them—they’re a great way to learn about the animals while improving your chances of actually seeing them.

The park is home to an extensive trail system, ranging from short walks to multi-day treks that span many miles. Each trail offers something different.

Uvita, a small town situated on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast, is known for its stunning beaches and laid-back atmosphere. It’s best known for the Whale’s Tail, a natural sandbar formation that looks a lot like a whale’s tail at low tide and is a perfect place for stunning photos.

It’s a great place to spend a day or two, especially if you appreciate the great outdoors. The town is part of Marino Ballena National Park, which safeguards marine habitats. If you visit between December and April or July and October, go on a whale-watching tour. The whales migrate during these times of year, so you’ll have a good chance of seeing them.

Aside from whale watching, Uvita is the perfect place for snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking. The crystal clear waters are easy to see in, so you can get a good view of the sea life below the surface while snorkeling or scuba diving.

Or, if you want to go exploring, meander to the nearby Uvita Waterfall, which offers both refreshing swimming and plenty of exploration opportunities in the surrounding rainforest.

8. The Rio Celeste

The Rio Celeste is well-visited for its strikingly blue waters. It’s located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park, situated at the top of a trail winding through lush rainforest. At the top of that trail, you’ll find waters that look absolutely unreal.

The striking blue hue is courtesy of a unique chemical reaction involving volcanic minerals, creating a body of water that looks almost otherworldly. While there’s a scientific explanation for the color, local legend has it that God dipped his paintbrush in its depths after painting the sky, causing the surreal hue.

The star of the show is the waterfall, which cascades into a pool below. While pictures don’t quite do the waterfall and river justice, it’s a great place for photos (you might even capture a few Insta-worthy shots).

9. Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, offers an intriguing blend of Afro-Caribbean culture, reggae music, and a laid-back lifestyle. It’s a vibrant destination featuring colorful buildings and a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

While the town and its melting pot of cultures are well worth the visit, the beaches in the area steal the spotlight. The town is surrounded by stunning beaches , including Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, and Punta Uva, each with its own charm. Each one boasts a pristine, sandy beach with crystal clear waters, perfect for snorkeling, surfing , or good ‘ol sunbathing.

10. Poas Volcano National Park

Last but not least, we have the Poas Volcano National Park. This park is home to one of Costa Rica’s most accessible and active volcanoes. The main crater has a bubbling sulfuric lake, complete with steam floating skyward. It’s an awe-inspiring, picture-worthy sight.

You can get a good look at the crater via the various trails around the crater, which offer good views of the surrounding area, too. If you want to learn more about the volcano and its eruptions, stop by the park’s visitor center, which provides educational exhibits teaching all about it.

From the golden Pacific coast to the pristine Caribbean shores, Costa Rica promises diversity.

Beyond Beaches: The True Costa Rican Adventure

Sure, you've heard about the beaches . But did you know about the volcanoes? The wildlife? The pulsating heart of its cities? As Lonely Planet states, "In Costa Rica, the visitor can enjoy lovely tropical beaches, the grandest adventures, the wonders of nature, scintillating culture, all the necessary components of an ideal vacation."

Discover the Volcanic Wonders

A visit here is incomplete without being mesmerized by Arenal Volcano .

Waterfalls and Wildlife

Every national park in Costa Rica has its charm. Corcovado and Manuel Antonio National Parks shine with photogenic waterfalls. Yet, the Rio Celeste waterfall stands unmatched with its cerulean hues. Pair that with an underwater exploration at Caño Island to witness vibrant marine life, and you've got memories for years!

A Cultural Dive in San Jose

While nature entices, the urban heartbeats of San Jose are equally captivating. Barrio Amón, with its vibrant neighborhoods, offers an authentic Costa Rican vibe.

The Nicoya Peninsula: An Unmissable Gem

Remember Tamarindo from the 1994 surf movie, "Endless Summer II"? Tamarindo is the most popular town in the Nicoya Peninsula , a surfer's dream come true. But don't stop there. Nosara and Santa Teresa are pristine beauties, waiting for exploration. And for a tranquil experience, Playa Carrillo offers solitude like no other.

The Guanacaste Charm

Dive into the magic of Costa Rica's "Gold Coast". From Playa Avellana's surf breaks to Santa Rosa National Park's historical sites, Guanacaste is a realm of varied experiences. And the active Rincón de la Vieja National Park with its gushing waterfalls and volcanic sights? Pure gold!

Kevin's Insider Tip

Okay, a quick insider secret from Kevin Erickson . Costa Rica's essence lies in its little-known spots . Don't just follow the touristy trail. Engage with the locals, taste the Gallo Pinto , and perhaps, embark on a night jungle walk. The real magic lies in these unexpected moments.

In these adventure parks, you can go horseback riding, tubing, ziplining, mud bathing, and swimming in hot springs all in one day. It's the ultimate Costa Rican adventure combination!

Rincon de la Vieja Adventure Park

Rincon de la Vieja is known for its stunning volcanic landscapes, and the adventure parks in the area take full advantage of this natural beauty. They offer a wide range of activities to ensure that visitors get a comprehensive experience of the area.

Horseback riding will take you through lush forests and past bubbling volcanic mud pots. Tubing is an exhilarating way to experience the river, surrounded by nature.

Ziplining offers an unparalleled bird's eye view of the volcano and surrounding forests. After all these activities, you can relax in the therapeutic hot springs, sourced directly from the volcano.

For those wanting a natural skincare treatment, the volcanic mud baths are perfect. Apply the nutrient-rich mud, let it dry, and then wash it off for smooth, rejuvenated skin.

These combination tours are fantastic because they offer so much variety. Instead of having to choose one or two activities, you can do them all! This is especially great for those on a tight schedule wanting to experience as much of Costa Rica's natural beauty and adventure as possible.

What people love about Costa Rica Tours

The trip was absolutely amazing and a beautiful country! The booking was great and filled with a good amount of activities at each location, but also was able to have some free time in each location to visit the town, hang out at the pool or ocean, or just relax if needed. All transportation pickups were relatively smooth and on time. The hotel in Monteverde was a little disappointing compared to all the other hotels.
Very organized. Good communication. Always kept me informed and answered all my questions in a timely manner
I thoroughly enjoyed my recent vacation The amazing accommodations, delectable cuisine, seamless transportation, would not have been achievable without the guidance of our exceptional tour guide, Lau. Without the support of TruTravel and Lau, the extensive exploration and diverse experiences within the ten-day duration would have been unattainable for me in Costa Rica.   Thanks to the meticulous planning and personal touch provided by TruTravel and the charismatic presence of Lau, I was able to explore diverse regions of this beautiful country and create memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Lau played a pivotal role in enhancing the overall quality of the journey. She was a perfect blend of enjoyment and knowledge, demonstrating both care and entertainment throughout the trip. She had insightful recommendations for culinary delights and engaging activities.  It is a rare find to come across someone who can effortlessly blend professionalism with genuine care and charisma. This balance contributed significantly to the success of the journey. Lau was able to provide help dependent that was specifically tailored to each person within the group, going above and beyond to make sure we were all satisfied and taken care of. She was also able to provide various information on questions that were presented and we can see just how much she cared about the people she was with.   Lau’s influence transformed this vacation into a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience.

"This trip was so relaxing because we never had to worry about a thing. Each time we were picked up and dropped off it was on time. The tours and tour guides were amazing. The knowledge and helpfulness was appreciated. All of the hotels except our last one were friendly, clean and comfortable. I would recommend finding a new hotel to replace that one. it lacked any type of service.

"Great adventures, tour guides on time and friendly. Overall nice experience however had very unexpected travel days of 9 hours car-boat-car that was not communicated and took up 2 days of our trip that could have otherwise been spent on vacation. Asked tour operator during tour who communicated incorrectly so we were unable to change our itinerary to avoid another wasted day. This was disappointing. Apparently the main bridge was closed a month prior to our arrival and planned closure for another 2 months. This would have been nice to know before we sat in a very cramped van- and good thing we don’t get too car sick.

"Costa Rica is a beautiful country and the other people who signed up for the tour were great. However, the tour guide, Laura Badilla, harassed and bullied me during the trip to the point where I left the tour halfway through. From the very beginning, she was not friendly to me, did not say hello to me, and would not answer the questions I had (before and during the trip). I tried to be polite and nice to her despite this strange behavior, but her actions only got worse as the tour went on. She started to bully me even further and talked down to me like a child for no reason - this culminated with her yelling at me in front of everyone who signed up for the tour (as well as strangers on our bus) and explicitly trying to humiliate me in front of them. Her reason for the blowup? I asked the zipline place we were at if they had an extra key for my friends and my locker, as I had given our key to her but couldn’t find her. That day, I reported her to TruTravels and Tour Radar, but they did nothing to help me. I had tried to give her space the rest of the day of her mental breakdown, hoping it would all blow over. It didn’t. She showed up to my hotel room at 8 pm that night, banging on my door and yelling for me to open it. She had my number and if she wanted to talk, she had all day to text me or ask to meet up. I was extremely frightened by her showing up banging on my door. I contacted her boss, Ron, about this, and he did nothing to help me either. At this point, I felt extremely unsafe, so I decided to leave the tour. This was quite difficult for me as I was then a solo female traveler in a new country that I had only planned on being in under a group tour. TruTravels only refunded me for that blowup day and the days I wasn’t there, which I view was the bare minimum, considering their tour guide ruined the whole trip for me and even threatened me on a trip I PAID to be on. She also illegally gave some members of our tour tattooed.
