Make Safari bookmark open in a new tab by default

Over the years, there have been several questions regarding how to make Safari open a bookmark (for example, a Favorite) in a new tab by default (that is, without using the command key). There doesn't seem to have been any solution posted.

One way to do it is to manually edit each bookmark you want to open by default in a new tab so that its URL is embedded in a bit of Javascript. The Javascript template I use is this:

javascript:function%20openInNewTab(url)%20{var%20win%20=%20window.open(url,%20'_ blank');win.focus();};openInNewTab(" PUT_YOUR_URL_HERE ")

This code defines a small function to open a URL in a new tab, then calls the function with the given URL.

The way I set it up is to save the bookmark as usual, then copy everything in the above code through the first doublequote into the paste buffer. Then I Edit Bookmarks, and paste the copied material as a prefix to the left of the bookmark's URL. Then I type the ") on the right.

It's kind of painful to do the editing, but the method does appear to work. There may be some way to automate the editing, but I don't know what it is.

Open safari and its preferences > General > click on drop down arrows of New windows opens with and select the option choose tabs folder .

A window appears , you can select the desired folder and click on Choose .

In the same way click on drop down arrows of new tabs open with same page .

I'm not exactly sure what problem that solution solves, but it isn't the problem I was addressing with my post.

As several people have mentioned in the past, it is a minor inconvenience that by default, when you click on a bookmark or Favorite, Safari opens it without creating a new tab. That is, it opens on top of the page you are looking at. Of course, it is possible to make it open in a new tab (assuming you have set new windows to open in tabs) by holding down the command key; this is the inconvenience my post was addressing. For any bookmark that you click on where you have made the modifications suggested in my post, Safari will now create a new tab, open the bookmark in it, and then focus (i.e., display) that new tab.

I note in passing that with that javascript, if you hold down the command key when clicking on the link, it will still create the new tab and open the link in it, but it will now keep focus on the original page.

Thanks Greg, I was getting ready to reply the same answer to tgyb's response. Your java script solution is helpful, unfortunately I have 100+ bookmarks organized in folders and will need to find a way to script this if possible. The really bad part for the way I work is that this doesn't work with url's in history, often times I don't bookmark a url, but may want to revisit it later in the day or the next week or two. I would like a new tab or window to open whenever I select a site from history as well. I personally would like it if there was a preference or key combination that would make every link, bookmark, etc that I click on open a new tab or window. Even if it meant I have to clean up after myself and close opened tabs or windows. Currently you can only Alt-Click on a folder to open all bookmarks in that folder in new tabs, but no way to open individual url's in a new tab.

Learn how to set Safari to open links in a new tab or do it on the fly to control how and where links open.

Everyone browses the web differently. And whether you’re working, researching, or just bumming around the internet, you want control over the links you open.

In Safari , you have various ways to open links on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. One of the easiest ways to open a link is in a new tab. This lets you keep your current page open but still have a look at the link you click or tap.

On iPhone and iPad

At times, when you tap a link from a web page in Safari on iOS, it’ll open in a new tab. But many websites don’t want you to navigate away. So if you visit a site and tap to read an article, for example, it’ll open in the same tab. But you can change this.

Instead of tapping a link on a webpage, press and hold the link . This will display the shortcut menu. From there, tap Open in New Tab .

When you do this, the link opens in a new tab and you switch to that new tab automatically . But you can change this too. You can still open the link in a new tab but do so in the background.

1) Open iPhone Settings and select Safari .

2) Tap Open Links  in the Tabs section.

3) Select In Background .

Now, when you press and hold a link to display the shortcut menu, tap Open in Background . This will open the link in a new tab but won’t switch you over to it immediately . This way, you can continue viewing the site you’re on and pop over to that tab when you’re ready.

You have different options in Safari on Mac than you do on iOS. You can control links by opening them in new tabs instead of new windows automatically and use a shortcut to immediately open links in new tabs.

Open Safari and click Safari > Settings or Preferences from the menu bar. Select Tabs at the top to configure these options.

• Open pages in tabs instead of windows : Select either Automatically , Always , or Never from the drop-down. The difference between these is that Automatically will open the link in a new tab unless that link is designed for a specific format. Always will open it in a new tab regardless. And Never will prevent this.
• Command-click opens a link in a new tab : If you check this box, you can hold your Command key, click the link, and the page will open in a new tab.
• When a new tab or window opens, make it active : Check this box only if you want to immediately switch to the new tab when it opens. If you prefer to leave it open in the background, don’t check the box.

Along with the above adjustments, you can always open a link in a new tab with a right-click. Right-click the link and select Open Link in New Tab .

This is how you can take control of the links you open in Safari. Open them in new tabs, switch right to them, or open them in the background and use shortcuts. It’s all in your hands!

Force links to open in new tabs in Safari

One of the reasons I like Firefox is that it has a built-in setting (in the Tabs section of its preferences) to force links that want to open new windows to instead open in new tabs. I really hate “window proliferation” while browsing, and this setting makes it such that links which try to force a new window to open—such as the links on our own Mac OS X Hints Pick of the Week page —open in a new tab instead.

Safari doesn’t have any such setting in its preferences—there is an option to make Command-click open links in new tabs, and that works on links that open new windows. However, if you’d rather not hold down the Command key, you can use a hidden preferences setting to force all such links to open in new tabs instead of new windows. To enable this feature, quit Safari and open Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities). Enter the following command, then press Return:

Launch Safari again, and you’ll find that any links that would normally open new windows will open a new foreground tab instead. Because the tab comes to the foreground, I prefer to use the Command-click solution for my normal browsing, as that forces a new tab to open in the background.

However, I also have this hidden preference set, mainly for use when visiting sites I’ve never visited before. That way, I don’t have to hold Command key down before clicking every link; if a link wants to open a new window, the worst I’ll see is a new tab popping up in the foreground.

If you ever want to disable this hidden setting, quit Safari and open Terminal again, enter the following command, then press Return:

You already have Safari open, and you've gone to Apple Mail to see if anyone's reached out to you with something important to say.

You get an email with a link you absolutely must visit. You click on said link, and, instead of the link opening a new tab in the currently open Safari window, it opens in a brand new window. 

Keep doing this, and you'll find yourself with more Safari windows than you care to manage.

This behavior has caused me no end of headaches. It's made worse when you realize that the different Safari browsers all have the same tabs open, save for (maybe) the one tab you opened that caused the new window to appear. 

Although this isn't a deal-breaking behavior, it's certainly frustrating. And remember, every time a new Safari window opens that contains the same tabs you already had open, it consumes considerably more system resources. This could land you in a situation where Safari consumes 100% of the system resources and renders your desktop slow to the point of being unusable.

You don't want that.

So, how do you avoid such a situation? Fortunately, there's a built-in option that will help circumvent this problem. Let me show you how it's done.

How to force Safari to always open new sites in tabs 

Requirements.

The only thing you'll need is a running instance of Safari. I'll demonstrate with version 16.1 running on MacOS Ventura. So long as your version of Safari is updated, it should work just fine.

1. Open Safari

The first thing to do is open the Safari web browser, which can be done via the Launchpad app on your dock.

2. Open Settings

Click on the Safari menu in the MacOS top bar and click Settings.

3. Configure Open Pages In Tabs

Click the Tabs section in Settings and locate the Open pages in tabs instead of windows drop-down.

From that drop-down, select Always. 

The Tabs section is where you need to look.

4. Ok the selection

A new popup will appear. Click Always Create Tabs to ok the selection. Once you've taken care of this, you'll find yourself back in the Settings app. Close Settings and you're back in the Safari window.

The setting will not be enabled until you ok it.

Test the new behavior

You should now be able to click a link from any app, and it will always open a new tab in the existing Safari window instead of opening a new window. This will save you from having to copy the link, close the new window, open a new tab in the existing Safari window, and paste the link in a new tab.

How to Open Links in New Tab in Safari

A lmost all modern web browser supports tabbed browsing now, so does Safari from Apple, where in Safari 3 the tabs feature is enabled by default. However, in both Safari for Windows and Safari for Mac OS X, whenever Safari users clicks on an external link (on text or image) that is set to open in new window (which has target=”_blank” attribute in the link anchor), the destination webpage is indeed opening in new window instead of a new tab in the existing window. This ‘feature’ is annoying for users who like to click on multiple links coded to launch in new window and open a lot of websites at one time, and have each link creates and appears in new window rather than new tabs in the tab bar in the same window.

Users who used Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Microsoft Internet Explorer should familiar with opening external links in new tab instead of new window behavior, and both Firefox and IE has the option to set whether to force new pages to be opened in window or tab, override the design of link to open in new window. In Safari, there is no settings or preferences that allows users to control where should a web page opened. Users intend to launch and open a hyperlink to a new tab instead of new window have to use the following workaround to override the new window coded link.

Use Command or Ctrl Button

To open a link that supposedly open in window to open in tab instead, hold down Command button (in Mac OS X) or Ctrl key (in Windows), and click on the link.

That’s the default behavior if you don’t change the tabs setting in Safari (if you change, try hold down Command or Ctrl key plus Alt key and then click on the link). In Safari 3, the following keyboard short is also available:

Ctrl (Command)-click: Opens a link in a new tab. Ctrl (Command)-Shirt-click: Opens a link in a new tab and selects it. Ctrl (Command)-Alt-click: Opens a link in a new window behind the current one. Ctrl (Comamnd)-Alt-Shirt-click: Opens a link in a new window and selects it.

Use the mouse to right click on the link, or press Control button then click on the link coded to open in new window (with _blank target) in Mac OS X (in Windows, try Shift+F10 which brings up right click context menu for the link, not working in Vista). Then select Open Link in New Tab .

Use Mouse Middle Button to Click

If you have a scroll mouse, or mouse with three buttons, use the middle button (or the scroll wheel) to click on the link will open the link in the new tab, no matter whether the link is designed to load in existing tab/window or new window (without target window).

Alternatively, if you have a multi-button mouse with advanced feature to assign different function to each button, then you can assign a button to do a Ctrl-click (in Windows) or Command-click (in Mac OS X).

Drag and Drop a Hyperlink into Safari Tab Bar

Drag and drop a link from web page to Safari Tab Bar, a new tab will automatically created and the destination site of the link will be loaded in the new tab.

Note that if you drag and drop the link into existing tab, the linked page will open in that existing (active or inactive) tab instead.

Merge All Open Windows Instantly in One Click

This way is not a workaround for the purpose to open a “_blank” targeted link in new tab, instead it’s a trick to quickly and easily bring all tabs in all windows into just one window. In the Safari 3 and Safari in Mac OS X Leopard, users can merge all open windows with one click by going to Windows menu, then click on Merge All Windows option. This function provides a fix if you accidentally open links in new windows, and can’t get good sleep over it.

Use SafariStand

If you’re using Safari on Mac OS X, download and install the free SafariStand plug-in. Then turn on and enable a preference called Open ‘_blank’ Link in New Tab .

Use Saft Safari Plugin

Also only on Safari running on Mac OS X, users can download and install Saft, a plugin for Safari to set link opens in new tab. Salf is not a freeware, and costs USD $12.00, but it’s a full featured plug-in to extend Safari’s features with sidebar, searchable history and bookmarks, full-screen browsing, type-ahead searching, customized Google Search field, URL shortcuts and kiosk mode.

Make Safari open new links in existing windows as a tab, rather than a new window

When using NewsFire for checking my feeds and I click the title to read the full article, it opens it in a new window in the background in Safari. How can I make it open the articles in a new tab in the existing Safari window?

I have looked in the settings for both Safari and NewsFire, but I cannot find anything that would help me. I am guessing this is a problem with Safari, not NewsFire.

In Safari's preferences under "General" at the bottom is an item that says:

Open links from applications: in a new window or in a new tab in the current window

Make sure the radio button beside new tab in a current window is selected.

Then restart Safari.

Internet browsing can get a bit sticky when you have a lot of research to do. You can end up with a jumble of browser windows, or you may leave one webpage only to wish you could find it again.

When you're browsing with Safari on a Mac and you want to open multiple webpages at once or open a page now for later viewing, your best bet is to open those pages in their own tabs. There are several ways to do it.

Open a Page in a New Tab Once

There are several ways to open a webpage in a new tab on a Mac.

• Command-click a link on a webpage
• Command-click on a Favorites icon or a Top Sites thumbnail, both of which can be reached through the Bookmark tab in the menu bar
• Command-click the Back or Forward button in Safari to open the previous or next page in a new tab.
• After typing in the Smart Search field, Command-click a search suggestion to open it in a new tab.
• From the Bookmarks sidebar, Control-click a bookmark and choose "Open in New Tab" from the shortcut menu. You can also Control-click a Bookmarks folder and choose "Open in New Tabs."

If Command-clicking isn't working, go to the Safari menu and select Preferences. In the Tabs section, select "Command key-click opens a link in a new tab."

Always Open Pages in New Tabs

To open all links in new tabs all the time, open a terminal window and type the following command line: "defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true" without the quotation marks. To reverse this, open a terminal window and type: "defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false" without quotes.

To open a terminal window on a Mac, first open the Applications folder, then the Utilities folder and then the Terminal application, or enter "Terminal" in the search field of the Launchpad.

Other Tab Tricks For Your Mac

• To show all tabs in a window, click View in the menu bar and choose Show All Tabs.
• To convert all Safari windows to tabs in one window: Choose Window  and  Merge All Windows .

Open Links in New Tabs in iOS

The iPhone and iPad work differently from the Mac. To open an interesting link in a new tab in the background of your current tab, you need to make a change in the iOS Settings app.

• For iPhones, open the Settings app. Tap Safari. Tap Open Links and select Open New Tabs in Background. 
• On an iPad, open the Settings app, tap Safari and tap the slider next to Open New Tabs in Background to activate the setting.

After you make the settings change, you can open a link in a background tab on iPhones and iPads:

• Tap and hold on a link.
• Select Open in New Tab  to place a tab entry on the tab bar of an iPad or to generate a background tab on an iPhone. JOh the iPad, just click the tab to view it. On an iPhone, to view the background tab, click the Show all Tabs icon in the lower right corner of the screen and select it.

G oogle Chrome might be the default browser for many. However, Microsoft Edge is becoming a popular alternative. It packs features like Collections, Bing Chat integration, Vertical tabs, Sleeping tabs, Bing Image Creator , and more.
