Day by day Itinerary in detail

Arrival in nairobi.

Welcome to Kenya. Upon arrival in Nairobi, a local representative will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to your comfortable hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax ahead of your safari adventure. Overnight at Eka Hotel (or similar).

Things to do:

Visit endangered rothschild’s giraffes, visit the karen blixen museum, meet orphaned elephants at the sheldrick wildlife trust, nairobi & tsavo west.

After breakfast, depart Nairobi on a 6.5-hour drive to Tsavo West National Park. Located in the Coast province in south-east Kenya, the landscape of Tsavo West is spectacularly varied, with semi-arid plains, open grasslands, dense woodlands, rocky outcrops and lava flows. The park is also home to an abundance of wildlife including rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion, waterbuck, lesser kudu, giraffe and the rare gerenuk. But it is perhaps best known for its herds of magnificent ‘red’ elephants, whose unusual colouring actually stems from the rich red dust and soil that they cover themselves in. You’ll arrive in time for lunch at Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp, situated on a private sanctuary at the western edge of Tsavo. The camp sits on a secluded dam on the Sante River, home to turtles, crocodile and hippo. Overnight at Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp (or similar).

Enjoy Kilimanjaro views at Voyager Ziwani

Head out on morning and afternoon game drives in historic Tsavo West, to experience the impressive volcanic landscape and hopefully spot its dust red elephants. You’ll also visit the popular Mzima Springs, a series of sparkling pools fed by underground streams. An underwater viewing chamber offers the chance to observe hippos and crocodiles beneath the surface of these wildlife-rich pools. Back at camp there’ll be time to relax and admire the view of Mount Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Voyager Ziwani Tented Camp (or similar).

Take a bush walk with a Maasai naturalist in Tsavo

Tsavo west & amboseli.

Today, drive 5.5-hours to Amboseli National Park, located in the Rift Valley province at the foot of snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro. Located close to the Tanzanian border, Amboseli is a photographer’s paradise boasting unparalleled views of Kilimanjaro and some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets you’re likely to see anywhere. You’ll arrive at Ol Tukai Lodge in time for lunch, with monkeys and baboons roaming the grounds while you eat. After refuelling and refreshing, enjoy an afternoon game drive in Amboseli. The park has a large concentration of wildlife, particularly in the dry season. There are over 1000 elephants, including some of the largest in Africa. As well as the huge herds, you may catch sight of buffalo and lions in the open savannah and rolling hills. Overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge (or similar).

Make the most of Amboseli’s wildlife opportunities today, on early morning, mid-morning and afternoon game drives across the national park's often arid plains. You will hopefully see buffalo and some of the big cats. Though largely dry and dusty, Amboseli is also home to swamplands, fed by underwater springs from the meltwaters of Mount Kilimanjaro. These lush swamplands attract wallowing elephants and hippo, as well as buffalo and birdlife. More than 400 species of bird can be found, including the rare Taita falcon and the southern banded harrier eagle. There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the facilities at the lodge. Overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge (or similar).

Amboseli & Departure

Depart Amboseli after breakfast, driving for 6-hours back to Nairobi.

Another stop?

We recommend finishing your African adventure with a beach stay on the white sands of Diani or Mombasa on the Kenyan Coast. Zanzibar or its small sister island of Pemba in Tanzania, are also fantastic options only a short flight from Nairobi.

Tsavo West - Amboseli - Tsavo East - 4 Days

MOMBASA – TSAVO WEST (240 KM – Approx. 4 hours)

Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner

The safari begins with a pick-up at your beach hotel or resort.  We’ll take the scenic Mombasa – Nairobi Highway, viewing farmlands and Kenya countryside along the way.

The journey includes several stops to stretch and get refreshments.

You’ll enjoy the landscape of Tsavo West almost as much as the wildlife. Here you’ll go on game drives over rolling hills and grassy savannah, passing volcanic lava beds and rich oases. Besides the big game, look for the smaller treasures like bushbaby, lesser kudu and dik-dik.

After lunch, we’ll journey over to a special site in the park – the 90 sq. km rhino sanctuary. This protected enclosure holds over 80 of the endangered, nocturnal creatures. If we’re lucky, we’ll spot one of the immense but shy rhinos.

Our safari evening will be spent here at your choice of safari lodge or tented camp.

What you may see at Tsavo west national park ………

Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Zebra, Lion, Wild dogs, Lesser Kudu, Hyrax, Rhino, porcupine and prolific birdlife featuring over 600 species.

TSAVO WEST – AMBOSELI (100 km – Approx. 2 hrs.)

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll be up early to explore two national parks today!

One of the gems of Tsavo West is a spring-fed oasis called Mzima Springs. Mzima means “life” in Swahili, and here we will find many forms of life at these nourishing waters – hippo, crocodile, exotic fish and birds.

We’ll explore the shaded banks of the springs on foot and take in other wildlife like zebra and giraffe that are drawn here.

Our final game drive will bring us to the park’s borders and a relatively short trip to Amboseli Park to the south.

You may be able to track your journey to the park as the great form of Mt. Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon. This largest peak in Africa is the grand backdrop to Amboseli and presents a majestic presence, framing the reserve’s wildlife. So be sure to have your camera ready.

We will have a relaxed afternoon watching for the wildlife. The park’s small size and sparse foliage will make game spotting easier. But it will be impossible to miss the immense elephants here. Amboseli is known to be the best spot in Africa to see free-ranging herds marching before you with their proudly held tusks.

Toward evening, the cloud cover masking Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak may drift away revealing one of Africa’s greatest treasures.

Tonight, you’ll stay in the park at the accommodation of your choice.

What you may see at Amboseli National park ……..

Vast Elephant herds, Leopard, Cheetah, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra, Lion, Mongoose, Hyrax, Dik-dik, Kudu

AMBOSELI – TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK (260 km – Approx. 4hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll rise with the dawn for a pre-breakfast game drive and perhaps a clear view of Kilimanjaro’s white-capped summit.

A hearty safari breakfast follows to fortify us for the day ahead. On our final game drive as we depart the park, we’ll be looking for lion, cheetah and hyena… and we’ll bid farewell to the elephants of Amboseli.

Now we’re back on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway as we make tracks to Tsavo East National Park, Kenya’s largest.

Here at Tsavo, the terrain is rugged and sparse, but that only makes the game viewing more accessible. We’ll be looking for the big hunters and grazers, especially the “red-dust” elephants. The giant beasts here like to roll in the red oxide soil, giving themselves a hearty coating of the rusty colour.

We will have a relaxing afternoon, tracking the many species of the park, including over 500 types of birds.

It’s been a busy day and as the sunset approaches, we’ll freshen up for dinner and the evening ahead.

We’ll settle in for our final safari night at your choice of accommodation.

What you may see at Tsavo East national park ……….

Larger mammals, Vast herds of dust-red Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo Lion, Leopard, Hippo, Crocodile, Waterbucks, Kudu, Gerenuk & Hirola

Day 4: TSAVO EAST – MOMBASA (180 km – Approx. 3 hrs)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch

We’ll get up… early! There’s so much to see here at Tsavo. After appreciating the wildlife as it emerges into the light, we’ll head back for breakfast.

During our stay at Tsavo East, we’ll visit some of its famous watering holes like Mudanda Rock and Aruba Dam, where a multitude of wildlife seek the life-sustaining waters. Don’t be surprised to find every sort of species sharing this communal space.

But soon it is time to head back to Mombasa and the Kenya coast.

Our drive back to the coast will easy and relaxed. We’ll stop at an open-air restaurant with great vistas of the Tsavo East plains, our final view of the area.

We should arrive back at the coast in the late afternoon or early evening and will bring you right up to the door of your resort or hotel.

Thanks for joining us on this 4-day adventure with Natural World Kenya Safaris. We hope to see you soon.

Covering an expansive area of 28,000 acres, the conservancy is a mosaic of different habitats, including riverine forests, savanna woodlands, and grasslands. Nairobi - Tsavo West National Park

4-hour drive.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

7:00 am. Your driver/guide will pick you up from your place of choice – hotel, residence, or the Nairobi airport.

Settling into your private 4 x 4 Landcruiser Jeep, we’ll make good time on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, viewing the passing local homesteads. We’ll be entering Masai country and you may see the herdsmen tending to their flocks.

Entering Tsavo West, you’ll be greeted with rolling hills and varied landscapes of bush, woodlands, and riverine forest.

We’ll take a lunch break at your accommodation and then set out for sightings of the park’s varied wildlife including lion, elephant, zebra, buffalo, cheetah, ostrich, and much more.

The birdlife here is rich in variety and color – your guide will be pointing out all kinds of migratory birds – goshawks, weavers, starlings, kingfishers, herons – the list goes on.

Another wonderful feature of the park is its protected area for black rhinos – the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. We’ll visit this 70 sq. km (27 sq. mi) reserve and look for the more than 80 endangered and shy creatures.

Tonight, we’ll relax and have dinner at our safari lodge or tented camp.

Tsavo West National Park - Amboseli National Park

2-hour drive.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

While on safari we like to reward ourselves with a dazzling African sunrise. So we’ll be up early with the birds and watch the light breaking upon the park. We’ll be ready as the wildlife emerges from the cover of night into the dawning new day.

Tsavo West shows us many colors and forms – one of the most vibrant is Mzima Springs, a natural oasis fed by an underground spring. The park’s wildlife is drawn to this vibrant waterhole for sustenance. The springs also host many of its own full-time inhabitants like hippos, crocodiles, birds, and exotic species of fish.

This is one of the few spots where we can jump out of our 4 x 4 Jeep and take a guided nature walk along the lush shores.

Now it’s time to head to neighboring Amboseli Park. The short drive will bring the towering form of Mt. Kilimanjaro ever closer as it looms over the reserve.

Amboseli is much smaller than Tsavo West but this just means the wildlife is that much denser and closer. Indeed, the elephant spotting here is said to be the best in the world.

It’s not uncommon to spot lion, buffalo, zebra, cheetah, and smaller game like hyena, fox, jackal, and even monkey and baboon.

With such active wildlife and the scenic form of Kilimanjaro dominating the land, your opportunities for great picture-taking are significant.

As the day edges on, the clouds sometimes obscuring the mountain’s peak may disperse, giving you still more photographic opportunities.

On this second evening of our safari, you’ll settle into your Amboseli safari lodge or tented camp for dinner and the night.

Amboseli Park - Nairobi

Meals: Breakast & Lunch

Once again, we’ll be up with or before the sun in anticipation of our final safari day. We may also enjoy a clear view of Kilimanjaro’s summit, weather permitting – a perfect way to begin our day. So, let’s start with a game drive and add checkmarks to our list of “seen” wildlife.

Then it’s back to our lodge or tented camp for breakfast as the sun rises over the park and we plan the mid-morning game drive with our driver/guide.

Grabbing our gear, we’ll bundle into the 4 x 4 for another chance to enjoy the sight of elephants on parade and perhaps lion or cheetah lurking nearby in the bush.

But finally, we must make our exit from the park with one last game drive and head back to Nairobi.

We should arrive in the city by late afternoon and we will bring you to your hotel, the airport or place of your choosing.

Three days – we saw and experienced so much. But perhaps this is only the first of your African safaris. There is so much more to see throughout Kenya’s wildlife parks. Just contact your travel advisor at Africa Kenya Safaris and we’ll happy to arrange your next adventure. We thank you so much for spending your holiday with us. See you soon!

  • Game drive at Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Depart for a full-day game drive at Olpjeta Conservancy best known for Chimpanzee and the late Sudan Rhino.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 140 sq miles (364 sq km) wildlife conservancy situated between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. Ol Pejeta has over 10000 large mammals and the game-to-area ratio tops the Kenyan park and reserve league. It is the only park where the big 5 elephants, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, and chimpanzees can be seen. Also, there is the fastest-growing population of rhinos in Africa can be found in this Conservancy. The area is famous for the southern white rhinos. There are about 80 endangered black rhinos, and two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos.

Safari by vehicle is not the only option at Ol Pejeta. Safari game walks, horse rides and even camel rides are available, as are nocturnal game drives.

Ol Pejeta, an early and influential settler from Britain Lord Delamere, shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis’ father Roussel, and the arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi had a colorful list of ex-owners since being established in 1988. The conservancy was built originally as a cattle ranch, but herds of migrating elephants regularly destroyed the fenced enclosures making intensive cattle farming impracticable. Today, cattle still plays a role in Ol Pejeta, but as a managed livestock within the conservancy and is used to maximize the bio-diversity of the land making Ol Pejeta an integrated wildlife and livestock area.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was formed as a joint alliance between The Jane Goodall Institute and Kenyan Wildlife Services in 1993. The sanctuary was established as a refuge for orphaned and confiscated chimpanzees. This is the only place in Kenya where non-indigenous chimpanzees can be seen. The Sanctuary provides a permanent refuge in a natural environment as possible. About 40 or so chimpanzees are protected on the island, and access to see them by boat.

Home of the Great Wildebeest Migration: The location of the ’ Annual Great Wildebeest Migration’ – one of the natural wonders of the world – is a gloriously beautiful, wildlife-rich savannah landscape. The annual wildebeest migration from June to October consists of over 1.5 million wildebeests, gazelles genus, and Zebras roar converge at the border of Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara making a spectacular entrance in a surging column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon, before finally plunging wildly into the raging waters of the Mara River, creating a frenzy as they fight against swift currents and waiting hungry crocodiles takes priority. Those that survive crocodiles and raging waters cross over to the patiently waiting predators such as hyenas, jackals, leopards, and lions for another survival battle.

Wildlife – The Mara is known as one of the finest wildlife destinations in the World. There is an excellent chance of seeing the Big 5, cheetah, serval, hyena, bat-eared foxes, black-backed and side-striped jackals, hippo, crocodile, baboons, warthog, topi, eland, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s, etc.

What people love about safari tours from mombasa.

Our 3-day flight safari with Mombasa Air Safari was organized by Brian Kazungu. Everything went well. The transfer from the hotel to the airport, the domestic flights and the Governeurs Camp were a complete success! The tents of the camp are located directly on the river Mara. If you step out of the tent, you can admire hippos and crocodiles in the river. The camp has no fencing, so some warthogs ran through the tents. But occasionally hippos should be on the road at night. But no fear! There are always rangers with guns near the tents. Lunch at the camp is served outdoors. The service and the quality of the food is great! From the table you can see the Masai Mara and of course the animals! Giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and zebras could be seen relatively close. Dinner is served by candlelight in an open tent. A very nice atmosphere! Coffee and cookies are served at the tent in the morning. Then it goes on morning game drive. We did not have the right breakfast at the camp, but in the wild on the hood of our Jeep. This is not only very adventurous, but also saves a lot of time, so that our Frühpirsch lasted 5 hours in a row! There are animals in huge herds! How many lions we saw, then we did not count! Unfortunately we have not seen a rhino, but 2 leopards. It was just unforgettable hours in the Masai Mara! We can only recommend this tour! Book with Bryan and you will spend wonderful days!
Bryan was able to accommodate me last minute on a 3 day safari and was able to pick me up and drop me at my required locations. I was told the places I was going to and I did end up there so there were no surprises. Salt lick Lodge was amazing beyond words. I was able to see most of the safari animals bar rhinos (but these are very rare). I would highly recommend.
I would absolutely recommend this tour.
