BREATH-TAKING LANDSCAPES + VIBRANT CULTURE IN THE HIMALAYAS OF NEPAL

“Trip-of-a-lifetime” is an overused phrase these days, however it’s how most of our riders inevitably describe their experience of mountain biking in Nepal.

From the lush forests and bustling villages of the Kathmandu Valley, to the immense and arid landscapes of Lower Mustang, every step of this journey is filled with adventure.

Then there’s the culture. Stupas and prayer wheels in Kathmandu. Prayer flags lining the trails and suspension bridges of the Mustang Valley. Local farmers herding yaks through villages, with hens, ducks and children running around their hooves. You’ll quickly see why this is the “Trip-of-a-lifetime”.

To find out if this intermediate+ MTB adventure in Nepal is right for you, read more on the skill and fitness levels required .

Tour itinerary

Many mountain bike routes lay claim to the title of the World’s Greatest, but only on our mountain bike tour Nepal will you be surrounded by five-mile-high peaks, and stay in teahouses run by local villagers stocked with good food and cold beer.

You should arrive in Kathmandu the day before your tour start date, to allow for any travel or baggage delays, and to give yourself time to relax before your adventure begins.

We recommend Hotel Ambassador, which is where your guides will meet you on the morning of day 1.

On the first day of your mountain bike tour Nepal you’ll be met by our guides at Hotel Ambassador and transferred to your accommodation in the beautiful hill-top village of Nagarkot, located 1.5 hour East of Kathmandu at an altitude of 2,000 metres above sea level.

When we arrive you’ll be welcomed with a glass of Sherpa beer and a view to die for. You’ll be introduced to your support crew and will have time to build bikes and get settled into your rooms.

After a delicious breakfast we’ll ride straight from our ridgetop home climbing up towards the summit of Nagarkot Hill. Winding our way up on a paved road and then on a dirt track at a fairly steep gradient, climbing all the way to 2,150m.

Once we’ve caught our breath and taken enough photos, we’ll peel onto a fast and flowy descent through pine forests and houses. A short mid-descent climb later, we will ride through the forest again, all the way down to the valley floor. This will warm up the legs, lungs and brain in anticipation of the rest of the adventure.

Today we pack up and bid farewell to our hill-top home as we ride to the mediaeval city of Bhaktapur.

After a short but steep climb to Nagarkot summit, we set off on a fun forest singletrack descent that continues through villages (watch out for hens and ducks!). There are a couple of rocky sections before we’re dropped out onto the road, and start a 20-minute climb on gorgeous forest singletrack.

Bleary-eyed, we’ll take a very early morning flight to the lake city of Pokhara.

Once in Pokhara, we will get into our 4×4 vehicle and start our journey into the Mustang Valley on one of the most scenic yet challenging drives in the world.

During a day of serious off-roading along the Kali Gandaki River, we travel through the world’s deepest gorge to reach the picturesque town of Kalopani by sundown.

Waking up in one of the most beautiful villages in the Himalayas nestled in the laps of the two mega giant Dhaulagiri (8,167m high) and Annapurna (8,079m high), we will be transported by our trusted 4wd into Jomsom, the starting point of today’s ride.

What follows will be one of the most spectacular and emotional mountain bike rides of your life as we climb to the small town of Kagbeni at 2,900m.

A shuttle ride to Muktinath provides a slightly slower start to the day, but with the ever present nervous anticipation that comes with any day of riding in Nepal.

Today’s first task is the 300m ascent to the breath-taking trail through the Lupra Pass at 4,100m. This starts off on pristine singletrack that will make you wish you had the lungs to ride it hard. Then the gradient really ramps up and for 20 mins makes riding a real challenge.

After a shuttle ride to the 3,800 metre-high holy site of Muktinath, we will spend the morning gaining the last 500 metres to the highest point of the trip at 4,300m.

Having wiped the sweat and dust from our brows and fuelled up, we will be appropriately ‘switched on’ for the unbelievable trail that follows; a stunning singletrack descent that twists and weaves through tight Nepalese villages, past grazing buffalo and workers in their fields.

Today gifts us a beautiful ride, leaving the arid, open landscape of Kagbeni and leading to the lush high alpine forests of Kalopani.

Meandering through ancient villages, alleyways, apple orchards and some of the most pristine forest singletracks in the Himalayas, we follow the mighty Kali Gandaki River all the way to the Thakali village of Tukche. A spot which also happens to be home to the most famous apple crumble in Nepal.

A day of dirt trails today in what are our last few hours on the bike in the Mustang region of Nepal. It may be a dirt road, but in Nepal everything on the bike seems bigger, better, more involved and it is a place where dirt roads are fun!

This is one of the biggest no-shuttle descents most people do in their lives. We will exit the Mustang Valley today and head back to Pokhara. We’re not using planes this time, however, so it’s bikes all the way down!

Our last day of riding is a short one as we give some time for our bikes to be transported by land to Kathmandu.

After a leisurely breakfast, we will drive to the famous World Peace Pagoda, perched on a hill across the lake from Pokhara overlooking the city. One quick ‘kora’ of the Pagoda later and then we’re descending on a fun, flowy, yet tricky forest singletrack back down to the base of the hill. If time permits, we might be able to squeeze in a second lap as well!

After the last morning flight of the tour we make it back to Kathmandu, transfer to our hotel, and make sure all kit and bikes are safely tucked away for our respective return journeys.

The rest of the day revolves around hitting the town for our private dinner, drinks, exchanging stories and cementing new friendships. The ideal way to finish a tour that is so spectacular that only those you shared it with can truly understand its majesty.

Sadly this is your departure day. We will transport you back to the airport and say our goodbyes, as you bid farewell to Nepal.

We want you to have the best experience of mountain biking in Nepal, so it’s important to be sure that this is the perfect mountain bike adventure, with the right level of challenge, for you.

You’re an experienced mountain biker, riding at least twice a week through the season and comfortable on: long climbs on double track; steep, loose singletrack descents; rough, rocky trails, some with exposure; rutted, uneven terrain; and suspension bridges. Read more on our intermediate+ skill level .

Does this sound like you? Your vacation time is precious and we want to be absolutely sure that you’re making the most of it. Be honest with yourself, if this adventure isn’t right for you, we have other MTB tours that may be a better fit for your mountain biking ability.

Please note: The skill level required reflects an overall rating for the trails on the trip but you should expect to find sections and obstacles that push your ability levels.

Skill level: Intermediate+

  • You are generally comfortable riding most types of terrain in different conditions: singletrack, double track, muddy, dry, loose, bedrock…
  • You can brake, use gears and corner instinctively
  • You’ll have a go on moderate technical features, such as small rock gardens, small drops and steeper sections, but may get off and walk certain technical features
  • You mountain bike two or three times a week throughout your biking season
  • And the ‘+’ part of ‘Intermediate+’ means that you will be aiming to tackle more of those moderate technical features

Fitness level: 5/7

  • You have a good level of bike fitness, exercising at least three times every week throughout the year, for an hour at a time
  • You can ride a mountain bike for up to six hours a day at a moderate pace, with snack and photo stops, for three or more consecutive days
  • You can tackle two or three fairly significant climbs a day, up to 600 metres each

Typical trails you’ll be riding

  • Double track: undulating and sometimes steep forest roads made up of hard-packed dirt, and loose double track roads with golf ball- to fist-sized rocks
  • Singletrack: ancient walking paths, at times very loose, with golf ball- to head-sized rocks, some deep ruts, and some sections of sand
  • Forest trails: dirt tracks crossed with roots and sometimes very narrow through the trees
  • Trail surfaces may be dry and sandy, or muddy, depending on the weather, and you will encounter river crossings
  • You may have to carry your bike for 100m or so to reach the summit of climbs
  • Suspension bridges are also typical in Nepal, you can ride or walk these

The ideal bike for the trails in the Himalayas of Nepal is a good quality full-suspension mountain bike with 29” or 27.5” wheels, dropper seat post, and 120mm -140mm of travel front and rear. Enduro style tyres that have robust puncture protection, such as the Maxxis Minion with EXO+ sidewalls are ideal for this adventure.

To pull off a bike trip to Mustang Valley there are a number logistical hurdles that need to be cleared. We are blessed to have Mandil Pradhan as our fearless leader. When it comes to the details, explaining Nepalese culture, and finding the right trails to explore, he is extraordinary at pulling everything together in a seamless fashion. And we are fortunate to have RJ Ripper as our guide/mechanic to keep us inspired with his mad skills and exhuberant spirit. He is presently the 6 time National Downhill Champion in Nepal and will hopefully be able to compete on the global circuit in the near future. Both these gentlemen have made our trip one of the most outstanding adventures I could have asked for. Namaste!
A big thank you to the H+I team in Nepal! RJ, Nishma and Ram went above and beyond to make our trip a memorable one. The highlight of this adventure really is the Mustang Valley and it was fantastic to be able to enjoy it whilst somebody else took care of the admin associated with it from the entry permits to looking after the bikes at the end of a long day riding. Additionally, in the weeks before the trip, Mandil and Catherine, needed to make some last-minute changes to the itinerary (due to the state of the Nepali airline industry) and they did so in a timely fashion, making difficult decisions and communicating early and often with us guests. Thank you H+I for a memorable experience! Hopefully we can join you again sometime soon in the future!

About Nepal — An Overview

Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia located between the latitudes 26° and 31°N, and longitudes 80° and 89°E. It is bordered by India to the south and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region to the north. It consists of three distinct topographical regions — a fertile subtropical plain to the south, a middle belt of hills varying between 1000 - 2500 m (3280 - 8200 ft) above the sea level, and a northern belt of perennially snow-clad peaks varying between 3,000 to 8849 m (9842 to 29,028 ft) above the sea level.

The highest mountain on earth, Mt. Everest is located in northern Nepal. The Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to endangered species including the tiger, the one-horned rhino and the Indian elephant is located in southern Nepal.

Most cycling in Nepal happens in the middle hilly regions, which is also where its major cities including the capital Kathmandu, and Pokhara are located.

Nepal is a low-income country with an average annual income of about $1,489 in 2023. This also makes it one of the cheapest countries to travel to for visitors.

Agriculture forms the backbone of Nepal’s economy, employing about 65% of its workforce, and contributing about 27% to its GDP. Foreign remittances by Nepalese workers abroad are also an important source of income. Tourism in Nepal has picked up over the last two decades, and today contributes around 9% to the country’s economy.

Nepal is a secular, democratic republic. However, religion plays an important part in the everyday life of the people, and until 2008, Hinduism was the state religion of Nepal.

Today, Hinduism continues to be the largest religion in Nepal, with around 81.3% of the population identifying as Hindus. Buddhism is the second most followed religion with 9% of the population following it. Islam, Christianity, and adherents of folk religions make up the rest of the population.

The cow, considered sacred in Hinduism, is the national animal of Nepal, while the colorful Himalayan Monal or Danphe is Nepal’s national bird.

When Is the Best Time for Cycling in Nepal?

The best time for cycling in Nepal is Spring (March to May) and Fall to early winter (September to December). The temperature during this time varies from 15 to 26 °C (59.0 to 78.8 °F). Days are bright and sunny, with little rainfall.

Which Are The Best Regions to Experience On a Nepal Cycling Tour?

The best cycling in Nepal happens in the central Nepal region between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Both Kathmandu and Pokhara are located in valleys. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, while the larger valley within which it is located is called the cultural capital of Nepal. The entire Kathmandu valley has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of the numerous sites of historical and cultural importance located in the valley. This means that there’s plenty for a cyclist to explore in the vicinity of Kathmandu itself when cycling in Nepal.

The Pokhara valley, on the other hand, is situated in the shadow of the Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain in the world. Pokhara is also called the adventure tourism capital of Nepal due to the various adventure activities that use Pokhara as their base. The vicinity of Pokhara offers plenty of trails to bike through.

A great Nepal bike tour would ideally include these two end points, while traversing through the quiet back roads that connect the two valleys through scenic rural hamlets over an elevated tableland. At about 1200 m (3937 ft), the average elevation in this plateau region is just right, making biking a little challenging and offering great views without being overtly arduous.

5 Reasons to Do a Nepal Bike Tour

1. it’s the ceiling of the world.

8 of the world’s 10 highest mountains are in Nepal, including Mt Everest, the highest mountain on earth. On a Nepal bike tour, you are most likely to spot 3 out of the top 10 highest mountains on earth — Dhaulagiri (8167m/26,795ft), Annapurna (8091m/24245 ft), and Manaslu (8163/26,781 ft). Imagine biking charming countryside roads with this massive, snow-clad giants quietly watching over you from the skies high above. That’s what makes cycling in Nepal so different from any other place on earth.

2. Diverse Terrain

The terrain in Nepal varies from being 150 m above sea level to the highest point on earth, Mt. Everest. All this within a landmass that is only 250 kms (155 mi) wide at its maximum. This makes cycling in Nepal an experience unlike any other place in the world.

3. It’s the Birthplace of the Buddha

Buddha, the founder of Buddhism was born in Lumbini in Nepal c. 500 BC. A Nepal bike tour allows you to explore this mystical land which gave birth to one of the most influential figures in world history. In fact, when cycling in Nepal, you will never be too far from the spiritual realm. Historical temples, beautiful monasteries, and the sheer magnificence of the mighty Himalayas will always leave you awestruck and humbled. Doing a Nepal bike tour will allow you to truly understand the land and the people that led the Buddha to his spiritual path.

4. It’s the Amazon of Asia

Nepal is home to 915 bird species. That’s about 9% of all the bird species found on earth. It also has 4.2% of all butterfly species in the world, and 6% of all the rhododendrons on the planet. The rhododendron, in fact, is the national flower of Nepal and is depicted in the national emblem of the country. Finally, Nepal is where some of the rarest megafauna on earth thrive, including the snow leopard, the Bengal tiger, and the one-horned rhino. Due to this amazing biodiversity packed into its small land area, Nepal is called the Amazon of Asia.

5. Experience a Diverse and Unique Culture at Close Quarters

Nepal is home to more than 135 ethnic groups, including Gurkhas, Tibetans, Brahmins, Bhutanese among others. Among these are the famous Gurkhas, renowned for their bravery in battle, and their service to militaries worldwide including the British and the Indian army, each of which maintains a special Gurkha regiment. Each ethnic group has its own unique culture, cuisine, and costumes, and a Nepal bike tour allows you to absorb this diversity at close quarters.

Each guided Nepal bike tour is led by an expert trip leader who is also a local. For groups of more than 4 members, we have 2 trip leaders to take care of our guests. ABT trip leaders are a repository of local knowledge, routes, customs, cultures, and cuisines. By employing only local guides, we also help generate employment opportunities for local communities.

All hotels on tour are carefully chosen for their character, comfort, and cuisine, and each hotel becomes an experience in itself that guests can enjoy.

A support vehicle accompanies guests at all times, and if at any point a rider does not feel like biking any further, they can always load their bike and sit in the support van.

Our tours are all-inclusive, which means meals, permits, fees, transportation and other additional costs are included in the price of the trip, unless otherwise stated.

We pride ourselves on the degree of customization we provide on each tour, and are always happy to accommodate any special requests from our guests relating to the tour.

What Kind of Bikes Are Provided On Your Nepal Bike Tours?

Due to the terrain and the altitude, we provide mountain bikes and e-bikes on our Nepal bike tours. All our bikes are of the latest make, well-maintained and in excellent condition.

What Types of Terrain Should You Expect When Cycling in Nepal?

Nepal is one of the most mountainous countries in the world with around 75% of its area covered by mountains. However, we’ve designed our Nepal bike tours to be accessible to a wide range of cyclists. Our Cycling Nepal’s Backcountry: Kathmandu to Pokhara bike tour is classified as Moderate to Challenging on our difficulty scale. This means that the terrain consists of rolling hills with a few challenging climbs. Most of the cycling on this tour happens on an elevated plateau located 1200 m ( 3937 ft) above sea level.

Mountain Biking Nepal with Haku Expeditions

Our Everest Epic : 11-Day Nepal Mountain Biking Adventure is truly a  mountain biking experience of a lifetime.  You’ll have the chance to see 8 out of the world’s 14 tallest peaks — including Everest — from the seat of your bike! This journey is filled with breathtaking, technically challenging singletrack in one of the most famous mountain ranges on Earth, the Himalayas!

We’ll start out in the Kathmandu valley for a couple of days, riding fun single trails on the northern section of the valley rim. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal, with a wealth of historical and cultural sites to marvel at and explore. You’ll get a chance to immerse yourself in the ancient Newari culture and cuisine while cycling in the city as well! After a few days of trail riding in the capital, we then head for the  world-famous Everest region of the Himalayas , a region known locally as Solu, the heartland of the famous Sherpa people. There, we’ll have a high-adrenaline couple days with singletrack climbs and loads of heart-pumping downhills with  unbelievable views  of the towering Himalayan range. After we summit the famous Pikey Peak and rocket down the breathtaking downhill track back down to base, we’ll take a short but stunning flight back to Kathmandu, where we’ll celebrate in style and trade stories from the week before heading our separate ways.

Ride description:  Nepal is one of the most diverse and exciting countries on planet earth, especially on a bike! Ride ridge lines, huge pine forests, and open alpine in one the most epic mountain bike holidays in the world.

Nepal Mountain Bike Adventure Highlights

We will be waiting for you outside the airport so we can save you from the mad crowd and take you straight to your hotel. The Manaslu Hotel is situated just outside the tourist district of Kathmandu, Thamel.

In the afternoon (depending on your arrival time) we can take you on a bazaar walk exploring the secret alleys and ancient courtyards of Kathmandu that most visitors don’t get to experience.

In the late afternoon we will have a guide meeting and talk about the ride ahead of us before putting bikes together and making sure we are ready for tomorrow’s ride.

Tonight we’ll treat you to a traditional Newari dinner (the Newars are the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley) at one of the capital’s tastiest restaurants and prepare you for the adventure ahead.

Accommodation: Hotel Manaslu  http://www.hotelmanaslu.com/

Rise and shine! Today, we’ll transfer out of town in the early morning to the start of one of the most (in)famous trails in and around the Kathmandu valley, the Scar Route, to really jump-start your Nepal mountain bike vacation. The trail starts in Kakani where we’ll be treated to our first real views of the Himalayan Range; on a clear day the mountains seem up-close and gigantic. We’ll climb for about half an hour from Kakani and enter the Shivapuri National Park. The singletrack trail really begins once we’re in the park: it climbs for the first 4 km/2.5 mi but then becomes a fast, technical downhill on a skinny jungle trail for the next 4 km/2.5 mi. After the downhill section, the trail joins a small jeep trail contouring around the park boundary to Danda Gaun, where we’ll have a delicious Nepali lunch waiting for us in a lovely garden.

After lunch, we’ll bike a short 1 km/half mile climb on a tarmac road through the Nepal army staff college to the start of another gnarly singletrack ride. It is a 5 km/3 mile section where the first half is a very gradual climb with some fun technical bits and the second half is a flowy, quick downhill. We then climb on a jeep trail for 4 km/2.5 mi before starting the final singletrack descent into the Kathmandu valley. It’ll be a fast-paced, 5 km/3 mi downhill run that ends up at the Boudhanath Stupa where we’ll spend the night in a nearby hotel.

You’ll have the evening to wander around the stupa — a dome-shaped structure erected as a Buddhist shrine — and have dinner and drinks in one of the many great restaurants overlooking the shrine.

Distance: 32.49 km/14 mi

Max elevation: 2238 meters

Elevation descent: 700 meters/2297

Elevation ascent: 922 meters/ 3048 ft

Accommodation: Hotel Shambaling  http://www.shambaling.com/

Meals: B, L

Once again we load up the jeeps in the morning and transfer out to the Kathmandu valley rim above the stunning expanse of the valley floor, this time on the eastern side at Nagarkot. Here we will most likely be able to mountain bike a loop of the Ranger Trail; this MTB trail is inside the Nepal Rangers training area, so if they’re doing exercises, we’ll ride another one of the many other great trails around Nagarkot. We do a few loops of the trails in the area, riding a trail the second time is always better.

Nagarkot is the home of the trails used for the Asian Enduro Race held in Nepal, so after lunch we’ll shred one of the trails used for this race down toward Nala in the valley deep below Nagarkot. From there, we’ll climb towards Dhulikhel where we’ll spend the night in a lodge with unbelievable views of the main Himalayan Range.

Distance: 18.89 kilometers/11.74 miles

Max elevation: 2095.7 meters/ 6875 ft

Elevation descent: 895 meters/ 2936 ft

Elevation Ascent: 322 meters/1056 ft

Accommodation: Dhulikhel Lodge Resort  http://www.dhulikhellodgeresort.com/

Meals: B, L, D

We’ve got a big day ahead of us, so we’ll leave Dhulikhel in the early morning. We’ll take most of the day to drive to the Solu Khola river area; first, we follow a Japanese-built road through the mountains to the Sun Kosi River. We then follow the river down for a while before crossing it and climbing up to Okhaldhunga. From there, it’s about a 3-hour drive on a smooth blacktop road that climbs from 1560 m/5117 ft at Okhaldhunga up to 2800 m/9186 ft at Sigane. As we near Sigane, the jagged peaks of the Numbur Himal section of the Himalayan Range will come into view, a section of the Himalayas we will come to know very well over the rest of your mountain bike vacation.

At Pattale, we’ll unload the bikes for a super-fun ride to the Solu Khola (river) way below in the valley to get our wheels moving and hearts pumping after a long day in the jeeps. Down at the river, we load back up and drive the last 30 minutes up the mountain to our beautiful, quaint tea house in Phaplu, which will serve as our home for the next four nights.

Distance: 10.25 kilometers

Max elevation: 2880m/ 9442 ft

Elevation descent: 1080 meters/ 3542 ft

Elevation Ascent: 470.9 m/ 1544.95 ft

Accommodation: Camp/tea house

Sleeping: Lake Side Retreat  https://lsrpokhara.com/

Even from down in the valley, the morning view will be incredible as you wake up to the sight of Numbur Himal to the north. After a hearty breakfast, we load up the bikes on our jeeps and drive for around half an hour to a spectacular viewpoint on the ridge above us. It’s called Ratnagi and we will have a cup of tea and enjoy the view from here at 3300 m/10826 ft before starting an epic MTB descent back into the valley.

Ratnagi has a view tower from which you can see Mt. Everest looming in the distance. Furthermore, it’s a traditional yak herders’ camp and you’ll still see the temporary shelters of the herders. By making cheese and butter, these herders are able to preserve the milk of their yaks and cattle. For centuries, yak herding was a unique and central element of Nepal’s economy and national identity; now, the culture and lifestyle of yak herding is on the decline.

After exploring Ratnagi, we’ll start on our MTB descent, where we’ll be totally surrounded by dense jungle for almost the entire ride. The 10 km/6 mi downhill to Dorpu is almost 100% singletrack that ranges from flowy to technical. We’ll then have a delicious Nepali lunch at Dorpu; for those who want more, it is possible to go back up and do the downhill again. Otherwise, we’ll pack up the bikes and drive back to the tea house where there will be chilled beers and beautiful views awaiting us.

Distance: 10 km/6 mi

Max elevation: 3286 m/10782 ft

Elevation descent: 1060 m/ 3478 ft

Elevation ascent: 656.8m/2154.86 ft

Accommodation: Phaplu tea house

At the halfway point of your Nepal mountain bike adventure the fun continues. Today we’ll head to the north of Ratnagi, climbing along the ridgeline for a few kilometers. Once we get to the top we’ll have a brilliant 5 km/3 mi of jungle singletrack down to the famous Taksandu Monastery, which was a stop on what used to be the main trail to Everest Base Camp. It’s likely that here we’ll meet trekkers and porters going farther up in the mountains.

From Taksindu we’ll have a brief but downhill section down to Ringmo, another famous stop on the Everest trail. We’ll stop here for lunch as well as — hopefully — some of their delicious apple pie made from apples grown in the area!

After lunch, we’ll ride back down towards Phaplu and Salleri on a mix of jeep trails and singletrack.

Distance: 25 kilometers

Max elevation: 3285 meters/ 10,777 ft.

Elevation descent: 1300 meters/ 4265 ft

Elevation Ascent: 656 meters/2152 ft

This morning after breakfast we’ll drive back up to Ratnagi and head south along Silgodee Danda. The first few kilometers will be fast-paced, undulating singletrack. We then start slightly downhill towards the locality of Chyalsa where we will stop for tea before another up-and-down section. Then, we’ll hit a length MTB trail that’s mainly downhill with a mix of forest, villages, and fields. We eventually reach Nele Bazaar. On Tuesdays, Nepali locals from both near and far come here to do their shopping. We’ll then have a late lunch before packing up the bikes.

This evening, we have a two hour drive up to Japre at 2920 m/9580 ft of elevation. It’s perched above a deep valley with nice views of Everest and Numbur Himal. There’s a beautiful gompa and stupa here and we will make our first stop here for the night.

Distance: 12.6 kilometers/7.82 miles

Max elevation: 3200 meters/10,534 ft

Elevation descent: 921 meters/3021 ft

Elevation ascent: 300 meters/ 984 ft

Accommodation: Tea house in Japre

From Japre, the mountain bike trail climbs up to a high, grassy ridge near the small village of Bhulbhule. There, there’s an unnamed lodge and breathtaking views of the Everest range.

Soon after Bhulbhule, the trail splits and we turn right to Pike Peak. We pass some old yak herders’ houses and a long Mani stone wall. The trail then contours along the hillside below Taklung Danda and goes through a beautiful forest trail carpeted with rhododendron. As we leave the forest, it’s not far to Pike Peak base camp, so we’ll roll in there early afternoon. Here at 3640 m/11,942 ft, we’ll set up camp near the one (draughty) lodge and sleep in our cosy tents with the lodge’s dining room as our hangout. It’ll be a short climb in the morning to the incredible views from the Pike Peak summit at 4065 m/13,336 ft.

Distance: 15.17 kilometers/ 9.42 miles

Max elevation: 3640 m/11,942 ft

Elevation descent: 45 meters/148 ft.

Elevation ascent: 999 meters/ 3278 ft

Accommodation: Campsite/lodge

Lodging : Campsite/lodge

Meals included : B, L, D

We will have an early breakfast before we start our climb towards the top of Pike Peak. We’ll bring our bikes, so the climb will take around 1.5 hours. From the top we will have a stunning, 360-degree view of the main Himalayan range from Mt. Kanchenjunga (the 3rd highest mountain in the world) in the east to Annapurna and the mighty Mount Everest in the west. Panoramas simply don’t get better than this!

We’ll spend about an hour at the top to take pictures and to enjoy the views. Then, we’ll start an adrenaline-pumping MTB descent towards Salleri at the bottom of the valley, a drop of almost 2000 metres/6561 feet. This is one of the most amazing downhills we’ve found in Nepal; try not to look too much at the incredible mountain views that surround you, because there is some gnarly DH singletrack to negotiate! The descent starts out with some rocky sections but as we get further down the mountain we come into a forested and hit mind-blowingly flowy singletrack. You’ll feel like you’re flying! It’s around 20 km/12 mi from the top to the bottom and, beside the views and forest single trails, a handful of beautiful, quaint villages will pop up near the end of the ride.

When we get to the river we will jump in the jeeps and get a lift up to our tea house. There, we can enjoy the rest of the afternoon in relative comfort after roughing it in the tents. Tonight, it’s a good idea to hit the hay early, as we have our flight back to Kathmandu early in the morning!

Distance: 20 kilometers/12 miles

Max elevation: 4065 m/13,336 ft.

Elevation descent: 2000 meters/6561 ft

Elevation ascent: 300m/ 984 ft

Accommodation: Tea house

This morning, we’ve got a stunning flight to Kathmandu on the first scheduled flight of the day. Once we get back, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Kathmandu or just hang out in a café and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

By mid-afternoon our bikes should be back in town as they will be transferred back overland; once they arrive it’ll be time to back up the bikes before we head out for a big celebratory dinner with the group, where we’ll exchange stories and relive our incredible week mountain biking in the Himalayas.

Meals: B, D

The morning is free for either relaxation or last-minute exploration of the capital city until it’s time for us to take you to the airport. We hope you’ve had the adventure of a lifetime and we look forward to seeing you again in the Himalayas or on another Haku Expeditions mountain bike destination!

The Nepalese rupee is readily available at money exchange offices. As always be attentive to the amount of money being exchanged and double check before you step away from the window.  One US dollar is equal to about 77 rupees  (2022) and you can buy a plate of Momo’s for about 100 rupees, a Dal is about 200 rupees and a cold beer is between 300-700 rupees.  Nepal is a cash society and it is recommended to bring cash  with you from your country. Atm’s can be pricey and iffy and you don’t want to be without cash.

Each person is required to have a specific travel/trip insurance outside of your credit card or regular medical insurance.

You should get comprehensive coverage with trip interruption/cancellation and with personal liability. Mention all activities that you will be involved in such as mountain biking, hiking at high altitude and whatever other activities you may have planned.

We do not provide refunds.  If you should get hurt or sick not only will travel insurance cover your medical expenses it will also cover the lost portion of the trip. Make sure you have trip interruption or trip cancellation included! South America is famous for people striking and shutting down all activities. If you miss your Machu Picchu trip, Galapagos or any other side trip,  or even your flight due to strikes the insurance will cover the loss or additional costs that are incurred.

Check out our  blog on travel insurance  and why it is a must for any South America Vacation!

For this 11-day Nepal Mountain Bike Adventure Vacation:

You should have a mountain biking  skill level  of  intermediate tech  and a  fitness level  of  4

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate tech.  This means: you’ve got three plus years of riding on singletrack trails of all sorts with features such as rock gardens, steep sections, rolls and drops, roots, and small jumps. You are confident on the bike in most situations. You’re constantly looking to improve your riding skills and enjoy riding for extended periods of time climbing and descending in terrain of all sorts.

FITNESS LEVEL:

4   This means you exercise 3-4 times a week and enjoy physical activities such as biking, hiking, skiing. You are active. For biking: you enjoy climbs that are are moderately long and being on a bike for 3-5 hours in one day doesn’t get you too tired or fatigued.

This Nepal mountain bike adventure begins and ends in Katmandu, Nepal. You will want to look for  flights to Katmandu  which will always require a layover.

Most travelers arrive at Nepal via  Tribhuvan International Airport, near Kathmandu .  There are no flights directly from the Americas and surprisingly, almost none from Europe (Istanbul being an exception), so you’re likely to connect via major airports in the Middle East or Asia.  If you have trouble finding something affordable, a good option is to fly to Delhi and connect from there (it’s about a one-hour flight that’s often around $80).

Check if you need a visa  for any of the countries you may pass though such as China. Some countries require it even when passing though, others will allow you to stay in the airport in a special area without leaving. Be sure of your layover countries visa requirements.

Before booking flights look into  how much   baggage  you are allowed and how much an  oversized   bag will cost you. All bicycles are oversized. The price ranges so check this before booking the flight.

IMPORTANT : Generally anytime you land in another country you need to get your luggage and rescan it or re-check it for security purposes. Every country is different so check ONCE YOU ARRIVE, do not count on the front desk lady who checked you in at your first airport.

Arrival and departure:

Airport pickup and drop off is included in your Nepal MTB vacation.

Someone on our Haku Expeditions adventure team will be waiting at the Katmandu airport with a sign to pick you and your mountain bike up.

Airport drop off is included on the last day of the itinerary. If you need airport drop off on another day this may incur a small fee.

This Nepal mountain bike holiday will be physically demanding at high altitude. We recommend you try to work out a few times a week. If you can not get to the gym, don’t worry — there are many free apps these days with intense 15 minute workouts. Taking the time to do a short but intense workout with squats, pushups and some core will make a huge difference!

Meals are excellent and varied, you can expect to consume a fair share of Dal,  a soup made of lentils and spices, served over boiled grain, bhat—usually rice but sometimes another grain – and a vegetable curry, tarkari. And of course Momo’s, a mouth watering Nepal style dumpling that is filled with seasoned meat and steamed.

Vegetarian meals are very common and other dietary restrictions are very manageable. Please advise us when you book about any allergies or diet restrictions you may have.

Every effort will be made to keep to the  Everest Epic: 11-day Nepal mountain bike adventure itinerary , but as this is Adventure Travel in the mountains, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of fellow travellers can all contribute to changes. We will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy-going nature will be an asset!

Our Nepal mtb tours generally have anywhere from 4 to 8 riders. Our Nepal trip will never have more than 10 people max. We have a guide for every 5 riders.

Have a room to yourself for the 10 nights of our Everest Epic Nepal Mountain Bike Adventure.

Price:  $60 USD per night, $600 USD per trip

"Bill, Nicole and the Haku family have become more than just a tour company to me."

The experience I had in both Peru and Nepal were far beyond my expectations. Peru holds a special place in my heart and I will be returned for a 4th time next year. I've now done 2 tours with them, with another booked, and a 4th in the works. Bill, Nicole and the Haku family have become more than just a tour company to me and I look forward to many more years of trips to come. I would highly recommend them to anyone at all skill levels. Book a trip now, you won't regret it.

Everest in the Backdrop!

Biking through the Himalayas in Nepal with Bill was awesome!! Couldn’t have asked for a better group to ride with. The local trail guides were knowledgeable and the views were epic, especially with Everest in the backdrop. The style of trip let you experience the local culture to the fullest. The trails we rode accommodated a good range of skill levels and definitely had the terrain to keep everyone’s adrenaline on high! Can’t recommend these guys highly enough. Would book again in a heartbeat.

Backcountry mountain road & cross country.

Our Cross Country MTB tours take you from one spectacular destination to the next. On these, you’ll cycle literally across whichever country you’re visiting. For instance, check out our Andes to the Amazon tour, where you travel from Cusco to the Peruvian Amazon.

Our current XC vacations are made up of long-distance rides on backcountry roads. If you are looking for XC singletrack, get in touch with us, and we’ll set up a one-of-a-kind MTB tour suited to your needs.

How we define XC: Anywhere from old logging or fire roads to rolling singletrack, Cross Country trails are generally long distances with both ascents and descents. While trails may be somewhat technical with rock gardens and tight switchbacks, they generally do not have intense steep rock gardens like those you might find in DH or Enduro racing.

An XC bike is often lighter with a slacker head tube angle for better climbing ability and tends to not have a dropper post although the trend is changing. Usually it will be a hardtail or a full suspension bike with a smaller amount of suspension — 100-130mm.

Most XC riders do not wear pads such as elbow or knee pads and wear a half-shell helmet.

Expeditions

Our MTB expeditions are multi-day trips that involve camping, hiking and/or local home stays in the mountains with cooks and porters. At the moment Haku Expeditions offers one complete mountain expedition and also two packages that combine an MTB vacation with a smaller expedition nestled in it.

The front travel for DH bikes is usually somewhere around 200mm with the rear measuring slightly less. Because they generally aren’t pedalled uphill, these bikes are rugged and heavy and usually have less gears. DH riders wear full-face helmets, goggles, and body armor.

Downhill Riding

At the moment we do not offer a 100% DH trip. Contact us and we can make a custom trip for you! Below, you’ll find our Enduro MTB tours listed that are mostly all downhill and can be done either with a DH bike or an Enduro bike.

How we define DH: DH riding – or Downhill riding — is regarded as an intense, extreme kind of cycling, made for advanced riders who love to navigate roots and rocks and huge drops with furious downhill speed. It requires a stellar sense of balance and technique and a bike with slacker geometry.

Enduro/All Mountain

Our Enduro/All-Mountain MTB tours are by far our most popular trips to date. While some of them focus more on descent like Ecuador and Peru, others include plenty of pedaling such as those in Colombia and Nepal.

How we define Enduro/All Mountain:   Enduro mountain biking, also known as All-Mountain biking, emphasizes technical ability. If you’re looking for a more adventurous ride, this is the kind of ride for you; usually, an Enduro/All-Mountain trail will involve adrenaline-pumping downhill mountain biking along with sustained climbs.

Enduro riders need bikes that can take burly drops and rugged technical obstacles efficiently while still being light enough to climb with; they almost always use full-suspension bikes with wide tires and longer rear and front suspension travel. Dropper post is a necessity and standard. The front suspension can be anywhere from 140mm to 170mm. Full-face enduro helmets and body amour are a must for Enduro racing.

7 – Donating 1% of all profits to help educate children in a technical field such as carpentry.

8 – Helping young adults begin a small business working in their technical field or purchasing products from them to help them get started after high school.

General Fitness Ratings

1 – Getting your heart rate up isn’t really your thing, and you rarely (if ever) exercise. Your idea of a perfect vacation is total relaxation: sitting on a beach, sipping a mojito, and just generally vegging out.

2 – You don’t necessarily work out regularly but you aren’t averse to the idea of doing something active. Although you don’t exercise that often, you don’t necessarily consider yourself out of shape.

3 – You exercise one to two times a week but do not have a normal schedule that keeps you biking or doing other activities weekly. You don’t go to the gym or train for any specific sports but you lead a relatively active lifestyle by biking, hiking, skiing, or whatever it may be. For biking: climbs and long descents give you some trouble and you tend to get tired after about 2-3 hours on the bike.

4 – You exercise 3-4 times a week and enjoy physical activities such as biking, hiking, skiing. You are active. For biking: you enjoy climbs that are are moderately long and being on a bike for 3-5 hours in one day doesn’t get you too tired or fatigued.

5 – You exercise at least 4 times a week and are an avid athlete that is consistently in good shape. You’re more or less game for any kind of adventure. For biking: you’re comfortable with being on your bike for 5-7 hours a day.

6 – You live and die for exercise, sweat, and suffering. You only want to climb higher, go farther, and prove how much of an animal you are. Steep climbs, long descents and big days are something you are looking to do more of and you can’t wait for your next adventure.

Biking Skill Levels

Beginner : You’ve been riding a mountain bike for a couple of years or less and you’re most comfortable on smooth single-track and wider, forgiving doubletrack. You like rides with scenic views; you like both ascending and descending on well-maintained, safe trails. You’re looking for an active but relaxing mountain bike vacation; you’re not into jumps, drops, super steep trails, rock gardens, roots or taking big risks on your bike.

Intermediate : You’ve got two plus years of experience mountain biking on single-track trails under your belt; you’ve gotten pretty confident behind the handlebars and are beginning to expand your mountain bike abilities. You like riding most types of terrain, and you’re comfortable both climbing and descending on single-track trails with smaller technical features such as rocky sections, small drops, and small steep sections. You aren’t trying to walk on most of the trail and are looking to take small risks with things like speed, jumps, rock gardens, and stair sets to improve your skills as a mountain biker.

Intermediate Tech : You’ve got three plus years of riding on singletrack trails of all sorts with features such as rock gardens, steep sections, rolls and drops, roots, and small jumps. You are confident on the bike in most situations. You’re constantly looking to improve your riding skills and enjoy riding for extended periods of time climbing and descending in terrain of all sorts.

Advanced : Ten plus years of experience riding single-track, freerides and biking of all sorts. You live for steeps,  jumps, rock gardens, techy trails, long descents, big ascents and discovering new terrain. Mountain biking is one of your passions and you are ready and confident to do what you love in a new and challenging place. You can handle anything we throw at you — jumps, rock gardens, steps, technical descents, tough ascents, etc. Biking is a central part of your life. For you, the bigger the challenge, the more excited you get.

Mountain Biking in Upper Mustang, Nepal.

Nepal became a popular trekking and mountaineering destination as soon as the world came to know the scaling of Mount Everest by Tenzing Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. In the 1950s Annapurna region started to be popular as a premier trekking destination. In recent years, Nepal has not only limited itself as a trekking destination, it has started collecting attention as the world’s top mountain biking destination and is ranked in the top 10 mountain biking destinations in the world. Mountain biking in Nepal offers a varied experience from ages-old existing natural trails to authentic culture, nature, history, high mountains and warmly welcoming local folks like nowhere else in the world.

Mountain biking in Nepal provides a variety of natural trails that encompass various terrains such as Himalayan heights, Himalayan deserts, alpine regions, foothills, terraces, rainforests, subtropical areas, and tropical landscapes. The proximity of these diverse topographies allows riders to be amazed by the variety they encounter within a relatively short distance. The mountain biking trails in Nepal are truly natural which lead riders through ancient trails used by the Yaks, Donkeys, Himalayan Goats, Water Buffaloes, and ancient salt and sugar traders. These trails are more than enough to amaze any riders around the world and give them a true sense of mountain biking in off the beaten trails with the stunning views of towering mountain ranges.

Mountain biking in Nepal is becoming popular among locals and travelers from around the world. Numerous hills, terraces, and mid-hill regions crisscross each other which offer an endless network of trails that have yet to be fully explored. It is increasingly common to see locals riding mountain bikes on these trails, and the number of overseas bikers coming to Nepal to kick-off off their mountain biking adventures is growing. Nepal offers a wide variety of mountain biking opportunities to suit any level of riders from novice to seasoned pro. Here are some carefully selected top 5 mountain biking destinations explained in short to give you some highlights for your next-level mountain biking holidays in Nepal.

1. Kathmandu Valley 1 to 10 days

The Kathmandu Valley is renowned for its breathtaking views, enchanting monasteries, numerous temples, rich cultural diversity, and historical landmarks. Many people envision Kathmandu as a bustling city, however, we have ventured beyond its urban confines to discover picturesque countryside trails, creating extraordinary mountain biking tours ranging from one to ten days. There is a collection of trails available to cater to your preferred riding style, whether it be cross-country (XC), all-mountain, or enduro/downhill. It boasts a wide array of trails catering to various durations, ranging from one-day mountain biking tours to overnight excursions and even week-long adventures. 3. Lower Mustang 5 to 12 days

Mustang , previously renowned as a pilgrimage site for Hindu and Buddhist devotees, continues to attract people who visit to offer prayers for salvation. It is believed that those who reach Mustang at least once in their lifetime will receive salvation from the sins they have knowingly or unknowingly committed in their daily lives. However, for us, Mustang holds a different appeal as one of the captivating mountain biking playgrounds, offering exhilarating rides ranging from 5 to 12 days. The region boasts numerous trails traversing mountains, alpine landscapes, and charming villages. The prominence of mountain biking in Mustang has been highlighted by the efforts of local mountain biking entrepreneurs, as well as through the exposure provided by renowned films like "Strength in Numbers" by Anthill and "Where the Trails End" by Red Bull. The lower Mustang Valley presents a multitude of trails situated between altitudes of 2000 to 4000 meters. Whether you opt for a 5-day adventure or a 12-day expedition, Mustang promises an unforgettable mountain biking experience.

4. Upper Mustang 15 to 21 days

Mustang, which translates to 'fertile land,' was once the kingdom of Lo and served as an important pilgrimage and salt trading route between Nepal and Tibet. Recently, it has gained recognition as one of Nepal's premier high-altitude mountain biking destinations. The region is adorned with an abundance of natural mountain biking trails that wind through villages, monasteries, and ancient pathways dating back to the 15th century. However, these days road construction is currently underway in some areas. This development has facilitated easier mountain biking in challenging uphill sections, thanks to the presence of jeep tracks. Additionally, for those seeking a more moderate and challenging riding experience, there are optional single tracks available. The upper Mustang region is primarily recommended for seasoned mountain bikers who possess a few years of experience in the sport. Nevertheless, even road bikers can handle mountain biking adventures in Mustang. Upper Mustang holds something special for everyone who has a passion for mountain biking.

Best time for Upper Mustang Bike Tour

Riders can have an unforgettable experience in Upper Mustang, sometimes referred to as the “Forbidden Kingdom,” with its historic monasteries, charming towns, and barren terrain that resembles Tibetan plateaus. So to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride here, it’s important to know the ideal time of year. Here are our insights on the best time for the Upper Mustang bike tour, check it out

Autumn Season (September to November):

Optimal Time: Autumn time is thought to be the ideal season for an Upper Mustang motorcycle tour.

Weather: Clear skies, little rain, and pleasant temperatures between 5°C to 20°C make ideal riding conditions.

Road Accessibility: During this season, most of the roads that go to Upper Mustang are accessible and possible, including the one that goes from Pokhara via Jomsom and Kagbeni.

Cultural Festivals: Enjoy colorful celebrations like Lo Manthang’s Tiji Festival to enhance your travels with a diverse range of cultures.

Spring Season (March to May):

Ideal for bikers who value pleasant weather and lush surroundings.

Weather: Mild temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C, with occasional rain showers in lower altitudes.

Landscape: Enjoy the wild beauty of Upper Mustang in the spring, when the region is covered in vibrant wildflowers and beautiful vegetation.

Adventure: When the weather is right, explore historic Mustang villages, monasteries, and old caves.

Summer Season (June to August):

Ideal for seasoned riders looking for less crowded, off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Weather: Lower altitudes with warmer temperatures, between 15°C and 30°C, and occasional thunderstorms and rains.

Considerations: Because of monsoon conditions, some parts of the route can be difficult to explore, including muddy roads and landslides.

Winter Season (December to February):

Not recommended for Upper Mustang bike tours due to harsh weather conditions and potential road closures.

Weather: Chilly weather, particularly in high-altitude regions, and you may encounter snowfalls that block mountain routes and complicate transport. All things considered, September through November is the ideal time of year for an Upper Mustang bike tour because of the ideal weather, the accessibility of the roads, and the dazzling colors of the surrounding scenery. But since every season has something special to offer, schedule your journey around your interests and objectives, bearing in mind the difficulties and rewards of visiting this far-flung part of the Himalayas.

We eventually arrive in Chuksang, where you can spend the night and tour the village’s nearby river and sheep shed.

The red rock tunnels at Chele and the yak herders’ town at Tangbe are stunning and well worth stopping at while you’re on the ride on the way.

Overnight Stay at Geling.

Ride Geling to Tsarang, 3588m (45km) 4-5 hours.

After breakfast today, we’re prepared for another day of exciting upper Mustang bike tours to the stunning Tsarang Village, 45 kilometers away from the starting location. Tsarang Village is located at 3588m, which really is pretty fantastic because we are currently riding at 3588m. You will encounter completely off-road/dirt road riding situations throughout the journey, some of which are difficult. The landscape along the Kali Gandaki River banks is breathtaking. Kali is Sanskrit for “Black,” and the river’s water is also that color.

From Geling, we will travel by the enchanted Upper Mustang Valley for about 4 hours. Tsarang is a typical village that still has the appearance of a medieval city. We’ll also see more than 2,000-year-old monasteries and other historic sites there.

Overnight Stay at Tsarang.

Ride to Lo- Manthang from Tsarang ,3840m (20km) 3 hours.

The most awaited day of the upper Mustang bike tour is today. We will start early after breakfast and move to reach Lo-Manthang- an ancient walled city often known as the Forbidden Kingdom. On the way, you will be treated by a stunning panorama of the Nilgiri, Annapurna I, and Bhirkuti Peak. The ride today allows you to experience off-road, crossing suspension bridges, and also crossing a river.

The trail first drops to Tsarang Chu Canyon and then climbs sharply. Additionally, the trail slowly ascends to the windy pass of Lo, providing an opportunity to take in the wonderful view of the walled city of Lo-Manthang from the high pass. The high pass is a fantastic location for group photos and the major vintage location for numerous well-known photographers who have caught incredible shots of the Forbidden City with a lunar-like backdrop. Then we will ride downhill until we arrive at Lo-Manthang.

Overnight Stay at Lo-Manthang.

Explore Lo-Manthang and Kora- La Boderr Pass, 4650m (45km)

After breakfast, we will start our journey to reach the highest point of our upper Mustang bike tour, Kora-La-pass, at 4650m ( Nepal-TibetBorder). Lo-Manthang to the Kora-La border is roughly 40 kilometers, where you can experience riding paved roads, and also pitched roads to the Kora-La border. The Annapurna mountain range and other mountains may be seen in stunning detail from this location.

Also, we will visit Choser Cave also known as Sky Grottes of Mustang, that have ancient grottoes erected inside a precipice, a 10-storey structure, and a round opening that offers unthinkable views of the grinding landscapes.

We can ride around the valley and explore the local area. You can also visit a royal palace at Mustang.

Overnight stay at Lo-Manthang.

Ride back Lo-Manthang to Samar, 3600m (50km) 4-5 hours.

Today after breakfast, we’ll start the alternate route from Lo-Manthang that will take us back to Samar. we will travel 50 Kilometers far from Lo-Manthang which is full of off-road. On the way, you will gain the wind-blasted dirt road breathing on a ‘ton ‘of dust and grit and almost succumbing to reach the Dajongla Pass.

Ride from Samar to Kagbeni to Muktinath, 2804m (25km) 3 hours.

After breakfast, we set off for 25 kilometers from Samar to Kagbeni. It is a 25 km ride that descends off-road trails to Kagbeni. After we reach Kagbeni we again ascend to see Muktinath Temple, situated at 3710m. Muktinath is a sacred Hindu tabernacle, a must-see on any visit to Mustang. Pilgrims from all over the sub-continent aim to visit a frightened Hindu temple at least once in their lifetimes. You can stroll around the sacred place and take a bath at 108 stoned taps at Muktinath.

After we visit the place we again head to charming Kagbeni.

Overnight stay at Kagbeni.

Ride from Kagbeni to Kalopani, 2505m (39km) 4-5 hours.

We will resume our Upper Mustang bike tour to Kalopani, 39 kilometers from Kagbeni, after breakfast. On this day we will travel 39 kilometers from Kagbeni via Jomsom which is a famous city. We then move toward Kalopani, through bumpy and dusty trails crossing several villages, rivers, and small trees. After riding for 4 and a half hours, we will reach Kalopani.

Overnight Stay at Kalopani.

Ride back to Pokhara from Kalopani 822m (110km) 6-7 hours.

On our 12th day of the Upper Mustang bike tour, we ride back to Pokhara from KaloPani after breakfast. You can also stop at a few villages on the way. Nepal mountain bike tours

Nepal was once a forbidden kingdom, hidden from the world, all her mysteries and secrets kept inside her mystical landlocked boarders. In the 1950’s when the curtain fell and her borders opened to a rapidly changing world looking for adventure and adrenaline, intrepid travelers thronged here by the thousands to the trek in the lap of the mighty Himalaya’s, home to eight of world’s ten highest mountains. They came to lose themselves in the mystery of the fabled Shangri-La… and perhaps a cloud of Ganja. As the years went by many people only saw Nepal as a place to trek or as an abode of the hippy, but as the twenty-first century dawned so did the age of adventure tourism.

To many it became apparent that the Jaw Dropping Mountains of the Himalaya boasted so much more than trudging one foot in front of the other. Now, Mountain biking has become a key part of our life as in terms of sport, for health benefits and for some of us it is more of a lifestyle.

Our Lead Guide/Founder, Bimal Gurung is an avid mountain biker and a passionate musician, hails originally from Pokhara, resides in Lalitpur, Nepal. He is the first mountain biker ever to riding through Dolpa Region, he rode through Beni-Dhorpatan-Rukum-Lower Dolpa-Upper Dolpa-Mustang in 21 days.

He has ridden and operate mountain bike trips to most of the existing high mountain trails than any other riders or tour agencies in the Himalayas of Nepal, including Manaslu Circuit, Tsum Valley, Tilicho Lake, Mesokanto pass, Upper Mustang, Annapurna Circuit and the Dolpa Region… He is a frequent visitor in Europe to several countries for the love and learning about mountain biking. He has ridden the trails in the Alps in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and mountain bike parks in the Czech Republic and as well in Norway. He’s been active in racing in Asian Enduro Series, International Chiang Mai Enduro as part of Asian Enduro Series of Thailand segment and in in Nagarkot, Nepal for last 4 years.

An active musician, lead member and a guitarist of the former Rock band “Catch 22”, Jazz trio “Inner Groove” and a founding member and a bass player for Reggae band Cultivation & The Himalions.
