Botswana safari tour reviews.

The tour was absolutely perfect and exceeded our expectations. Our guide was so knowledgeable and was interested in getting to know us. The chef (Chandolo) was brilliant - his food was amazing and he was also a really warm, welcoming person. The whole team worked great together and I would 100% recommend!
We had a wonderful time! Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba were excellent as drivers, guides, cooks, and problem solvers. We ate very well indeed. I will comment that the tour we took was quite different from the stated description of it. For example, we did not go to the salt pan. It seems that Rocky, the boss of the crew, received a different itinerary than what we thought we would be doing. How did that happen? The places we did go were terrific, and it was not until the second last day of the trip, that we realised the discrepancy. Rocky offered us a way to go to the salt pan, but for a couple of reasons, we declined that offer. Please note that I am not complaining about Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba. They followed the information they had received. I will also say that while we were accepting of the situation, some people could have reacted differently, and that would not have been fair to our crew. To summarise, we loved the trip! Credit to Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba for looking after us so well and sharing their beautiful country with us. Sincerely, Arthur George Busch
I loved the trip. We had so many memorable experiences. The staff, lead by Beneh, Dominic and Annah, were delightful. As a 69 year old I found the heat and the long drives over rough roads challenging but worthwhile. We saw so many eautiful

Botswana dream safari costs

How Much Does a Botswana Safari Cost & How to Save on Expenses?

Dreaming of the Okavango Delta, the elephants of Chobe National Park, or the wide-open spaces of the Kalahari Desert? Are you ready for the vacation of a lifetime, visiting one of the best safari destinations in Africa? Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-timer dreaming of an unforgettable Botswana adventure, there are many factors to consider when planning your perfect African safari getaway. In this blog post, we will explore all that goes into estimating the cost of a Botswana Safari – from choosing dates that fit your budget to finding accommodation that suits your comfort levels. We'll also address factors such as safari group size, and transport options which can all influence the final costs.

Botswana safari budget

Factors that Influence Your Botswana Safari Costs

When planning a safari in Botswana , there are a few important variables that you need to consider. These include flights, the time of year you plan to travel, the type of accommodation and services you choose, the level of comfort you want to experience, exclusivity, and extra activities. Each one of these factors can influence your safari budget. In the past, Botswana developed a reputation for high-end luxury safaris. While it is more expensive than other southern African safari destinations, due to high demand, the budget safari sector has been growing steadily. To help you get the most out of your Botswana safari budget, we have compiled a guide to a few safari booking basics.

While we try to get it right, this blog is meant as a rough guide to get you on the right track. For accurate and up-to-date information, talk to one of the African Budget Safaris consultants who can walk you through the process step by step.

Getting to Botswana

There are no direct flights to Botswana. This means that before you get to Botswana’s capital city, Gaborone, you will need to transit through Johannesburg in South Africa. Because of this extra connection, flying to Botswana will be more expensive than flying directly to other African safari destinations like South Africa or Kenya.

In addition to the extra connection, international flight prices tend to fluctuate with demand. For example, flying over the festive season in December will be more expensive than flying in mid-March, this all comes down to booking your safari at a certain time of year, which can affect not only your safari experience but also your safari budget.

Okavango Delta safari costs, Botswana

Best Time of Year

The best time to visit Botswana depends on where you want to go. The high season coincides with the best game viewing in the most popular parks. The Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, and Chobe National Park are Botswana’s flagship destinations. The best time to visit them is from May to September during the dry, winter months when game viewing is at its best. While January to March is the rainy season, and may not offer the best safari conditions in the delta, this is a great time to visit the Kalahari Desert as the pans are full and animals gather to drink and hunt.

Prices are at their highest during the dry winter months when safari conditions are at their best, and demand is high. While peak months run from May to October, April to June, and November to December are considered shoulder seasons, and while safari conditions are still good, it is possible to find some budget deals. The 'low season' or wet season runs from January until March, which is often cheaper due to lower demand, but spotting wildlife tends to be harder in this period due to heavy rainfall, dense bush, and dispersed animals. The exception to this rule is of course the Kalahari, which comes into its own at this time of year.

Khoisan of Botswana

When planning your Botswana safari, decide what your priorities are. Because Botswana is less touristy, overcrowding is seldom an issue whenever you visit. If game viewing or photography is your top priority, then consider travelling during the peak season but looking for budget accommodation or even camping, so that you can splurge on extra safari activities or stay longer. If you’d rather stay in better accommodation, and game viewing is incidental, a shorter trip, or booking in the shoulder or low season may be the right option for you.

Knowing what kind of experience you want to have, makes planning your trip a little easier. Our experienced safari consultants are always available to help tweak your experience to tick all your boxes.

Botswana Safari Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the major factors affecting the cost of a Botswana safari. Botswana has a reputation for luxury safaris. While to some extent this is still true, there are budget options available. However, compared to South Africa which has an extensive budget traveller network, Botswana has comparatively fewer accommodation options.

The most affordable way to see Botswana is by hiring a 4x4 vehicle, self-driving, and staying in campsites. A public campsite will cost you as little as US$ 3 per person per night. Children between 8 and 18 are half-price, while those under 8-year-olds go free of charge. Camping allows you to experience Botswana in its rawest form as you sleep directly under the stars, erect your own tents, make your own food, and do your own dishes. This DIY approach is not for everyone, and there are guided camping safari options that will take some of the stress out of being in the African bush.

Botswana safari cost

Camping safaris can be anything from a basic shared two-man tent with shared facilities (bring your own sleeping bag), to a luxury air-conditioned tent with a private bath, and a plunge pool. Experience something truly special with a mobile camp where you will enjoy luxurious tents complete with en suite bathrooms, varying dining experiences, and amazing safari activities all without compromising on comfort. For this reason, don’t expect 'camping' to mean cheap or rough, and keep the option open as Botswana camping safaris can be hugely rewarding.

Some 7-Day Botswana Safari Tours

African Budget Safaris has 22 7-day packages ranging from US$ 932 to US$ 4,840. They range from overland camping to tented camps, and luxury lodges.

  • Heavy Budget: Camping Safari for 12 people at US$ 932 pp. Accommodation is a shared 2-person dome tent, and the safari visits Chobe National Park, Hwange National Park, Kasane, Matobo National Park, and Victoria Falls.
  • Mid-range: Budget Lodge safari for 12 people at US$ 1,899 pp. Accommodation is a combination of lodges and camping, and the tour starts at Victoria Falls, visits the Okavango, Chobe, and the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, before concluding in Johannesburg.
  • High End: Fully serviced luxury camping for 10 people at US$ 4,840 pp. Accommodation is in comfortable tented camps. Private concessions, remote fly-in destinations, and incredible wildlife in Moremi, the Okavango Delta, and the Savuti Marsh in Chobe.

For those wanting a few creature comforts or travelling with a family, private lodges are a popular option offering air-conditioned rooms and private bathrooms. The private lodges also come in all manner of shapes and sizes, from budget-friendly to luxury accommodations.

If you would like to experience a little bit of everything, many safari packages work on the ‘mixed accommodation model’ so that you can experience it all, from camping in the Kalahari to a luxury pad deep in the Okavango. No matter which accommodation option suits your pocket, be prepared to be amazed at what Botswana has to offer!

Safari Group Size & Safari Costs

Group size is an important consideration. If you are looking for a romantic getaway for two people to the Okavango Delta, then you are going to take on ALL the costs, from transport to game drives, accommodation, guides, and food. On the other hand, 57 days on an overland truck travelling from Nairobi to Cape Town with 28 intrepid adventurers at US$ 126 per day, is a result of sharing costs.

  • 7-day mobile-tented safari, an exclusive small group safari for 7 people, visiting Moremi, Khwai, and the Delta costs US$ 2,825 per person.
  • 7-day, mixed accommodation safari for 20 people, travelling from Zimbabwe to Namibia, and including the Okavango, costs US$ 1,682 per person.

Luckily, there are many options in between, and it is a sliding scale. There is also a sweet spot between exclusivity and conviviality. A small group safari usually caters to between 7 and 12 people. While the longer overland tours can fall anywhere between 12 and 29. If you like large groups and meeting new people then these group safaris are an excellent option. On the other hand, if you want a more intimate experience, why not organize a Botswana safari for you and your extended family or for a close group of friends, thus avoiding travelling with people you don’t know?

Average Prices for Different Types of Botswana Safaris

It is possible to find safari packages to suit different budgets and needs – from budget options for those looking for an affordable adventure to luxury accommodation for those wanting the ultimate comfort. Below is a brief budget guide for African Budget Safari tours. Tours are grouped according to duration, 4-6 day packages, 7-9 day tours, and 10-13 day safari adventures. This is just a sample. There are longer tours available too, and for a comprehensive list, you can visit the African Budget Safaris  Botswana tours page .

  • A 4-6 day safari will cost anywhere between US$ 1,200 and US$ 4,000 per person, depending on the type of package you choose.
  • For a 7-9 day Botswana safari adventure you might expect to pay anywhere between US$ 1,000 and US$ 5,000.
  • 10-13 day packages range in price from as little as US$ 1,500 to US$ 7,500 depending on the comfort level and accommodation that you select.

Prices do change across different seasons, and it is possible to find safari discounts. The prices above are for tours offered by African Budget Safaris, and we recommend that you speak with one of our safari consultants to find out where to find the best value for your money.

Botswana Safari Activities & Extra Costs

The benefit of booking an all-inclusive safari package is that you get one all-inclusive price. However, even if you book a luxury package with high-end activities included, it is still a good idea to budget for tips for your guides and bush staff, as well as curios, gifts, and other safari mementoes.

Depending on where you are on the budget scale, your Botswana safaris may include a game drive into the Kalahari, a mokoro boat ride into the Delta, or even a helicopter trip over the Okavango’s pristine wilderness for a bird’s eye view. However, whatever your package includes, there are often gaps or free-time slots left in the itinerary to allow visitors to explore on their own. Botswana has a range of amazing safari activities that might tempt you. It is a good idea to budget for these safari extras.

For a start, alcoholic drinks are seldom included, so if you are partial to a sundowner or two, plan accordingly. Mokoro canoe trips, gently paddling through the Delta’s waterways, is a hugely popular activity. These trips are often included but can be purchased as additional activities for around US$ 80. Scenic flights over Delta start at around US$ 325 and have add-ons like champagne stopovers, all at an additional cost.

Mokoro in Delta, Botswana safari cost

Your safari booking agent will know exactly what activities are on offer, and have access to up-to-date price lists. When you book your Botswana safari, check through your itinerary carefully to see what is, and what is not included to help avoid any disappointment.

A bloat of hippos swimming in Chobe River, Botswana

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is probably what you picture when someone says 'safari in Africa'. Located near the  Okavango Delta , the park sits alongside the Chobe River and is home to what is thought to be the largest concentration of African elephants in the world. The majestic mammals often come to drink and bathe in the waters alongside other wildlife friends (and foes) including the cape buffalo, impala, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs. There are so many ways to spend your time here. Go on a 4x4 game drive, hop on a sunset cruise along Chobe River or simply sit back and listen to the noises of the great outdoors.

A mob of meerkats seen on safari in Africa

Makgadikgadi Pans

Get a first-hand glance at one of the largest salt pans in the world in what used to be Lake Makgadikgadi. The Makgadikgadi Pans are a beautiful mixture of baobab trees, salt flats and grassy plains, best explored in a 4x4. However, if the scenery alone doesn't tempt you, then hopefully you’re more swayed by its residents. Arguably the cutest animal on safari, the meerkat is native to the Ntwetwe salt pan and is often found huddling in mobs by the sand dunes. You'll also be among some of the world's largest animals such as the elephants and giraffes as well as some of its pinkest as the area is home to a flamboyance of flamingoes.

A zebra among the grass in Botswana

Boteti River

The Boteti River is a must for die-hard zebra lovers as over 25,000 zebras are known to migrate here from the neighboring game park. Due to the numbers and their stripey coats, it’s likely you’ll see them if you’re there in the migrating season. Since the Boteti River is the only permanent water source in the area, there’s always likely to be a number of animals perusing its shores. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re more interested in the prey or the predators, you’ll likely see them all. Find leafy-green eaters such as giraffes, springboks and oryx enjoying the lush vegetation and the toothy species, namely the lions, cheetahs and wild dogs, lurking hungrily nearby.

An Rhino adult and calf in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Botswana

Khama Rhino Sanctuary

While not quite as fanciful as their mythical cousins the unicorn, rhinoceros sightings are almost as rare these days due to their near-extinct status. Luckily, places like the  Khama Rhino Sanctuary  have homed and rehabilitated rhinos since 1992 and are now home to both black and white rhino residents. The sanctuary has a successful breeding program and is protected with anti-poaching patrols. The continuing goal for the KRS is to reintroduce as many rhinos as possible back into their natural wild habitats, so visiting this amazing place is definitely worth the animal sightings, not to mention supporting their mission.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

Winter (April through August) is a good time to visit Botswana. The days are usually mild and wildlife is generally quite easy to spot. The summer can bring frequent rain, which can make it difficult to travel around some of the national parks. Wildlife also tends to disperse during the summer rains, making animals a little harder to spot.

Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Kalahari Anib Lodge

Botswana is a fascinating world that is defined by its diverse landscape of desert, grasslands, and waterways. Botswana offers an unforgettable safari experience in some of Africa’s most pristine and remote game areas. It’s renowned for its migrating mammals, endangered wild dog and rhino, and some unique species of antelope. The Okavango Delta affords travelers the opportunity to experience unparalleled game viewing in a hot air balloon, motorized boat and mokoro (traditional dugout canoe). From a water wonderland to the sand dunes of the Kalahari, one can view century-old Baobabs, interact with San Bushmen to discover incredible survival secrets, and turn into a land post for a family of habituated meerkats that are scouting the area for predators.

Botswana promises a safari unlike anything else you could have imagined.

The best time to travel to Botswana depends on what you wish to experience.

The cooler, drier winter months from May to October are excellent for game-viewing as herds of animals flock to decreasing water sources and the vegetation thins out. Days are warm; nights can be cold, especially in the desert. This is also the period when floodwaters reach the Delta making for excellent water-based activities such as boating and mokoro rides.

The hot, wet summer months from November to March are good for bird watching when migrants abound. Although game viewing is more challenging, these months draw fewer crowds and have plenty to offer. Many reserves are at their most beautiful, as the vegetation is lush and green, providing an ideal background for wildlife photography. This is also the animals’ calving season, so it’s perfect for seeing gamboling babies.

Chobe National Park

This is an integral part of the Botswana safari experience. Chobe National Park takes its name from the Chobe River which forms the northern boundary of the park and a river safari - or cruise - is one of the best options to explore the area.  It's known for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo, which converge along the Chobe Riverfront in the dry months. Lions, antelopes, and hippos inhabit the woods and lagoons around the Linyanti Marsh. The floodable grasslands of the Savuti Marsh attract numerous bird species, plus migrating zebras.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland river delta located in northern Botswana. It's known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat. The Moremi Game Reserve occupies the east and central areas of the region. Here, dugout canoes are used to navigate past hippos, elephants and crocodiles. On dry land, game drives allow you to explore the pristine wilderness and experience Africa’s wildlife, including lions, leopards, giraffes and rhinos.

Linyanti, Selinda & Kwando

The vast open plains of northern Botswana teem with predators, elephants and buffalos and with very few lodges in the large private concessions of Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando – the result is an extremely private safari experience. The area is fed by the Kwando and Linyanti Rivers, which converge into the Selinda Spillway.

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savanna in Southern Africa extending for 900,000 square kilometers (350,000 square miles), covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and regions of South Africa. Activities in the Kalahari Desert includes game drives, Kalahari Desert walking safaris, cultural tours and much more.

Tsodilo Hills

The Tsodilo Hills has a special significance to the Bushmen who have been living there for thousands of years. The Tsodilo Hills consist of four large pieces of rock, rising unexpectedly from the dry expanse of desert. The Bushmen referred to the bigger rock as the 'male', the smaller one was known as the 'female', and the smallest one was the 'child'. There is a small Bushmen habitat nearby as well as a village inhabited by the Hambukushu people. The thousands of rock paintings can be found by following different trails leading to over 350 sites.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

With an area of 3 900 sq. km, Makgadikgadi is situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana. It is one of the largest salt flats in the world. Among the many things to do in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park are safari rides, game drives, bird watching, a tour of the Gweta, and bush walks. Wildlife includes eland, lions, zebras, cheetah, gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest, bushbuck, giraffe, steenbok, elephants and many more.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a vast wildlife preserve in the Kalahari Desert region of Botswana and South Africa, bordering Namibia to the west. It’s characterized by red dunes and dry rivers. Wildlife includes migrating herds of wildebeest and springbok, plus predators like raptors and black-maned Kalahari lions. Various lodges and wilderness camps offer game-viewing drives and guided walks with park rangers.

Known as “the land of the giants”, the 12 000 hectare Tuli Block is a narrow fringe of land at Botswana's eastern border. Tuli Block is set in a landscape of enormous trees on the banks of the Limpopo River, beautiful riverine forests of lime-green fever trees, and rocky landscapes carved from ancient granite and basalt rocks over millions of years. A variety of activities offer an all-rounded experience including fantastic game viewing opportunities, spectacular bird watching, and the famous leopards of Tuli.

Botswana Safari | Luxury, Lodges and Tours

A big 5 safari destination and a reputation for low density tourism, eco-friendly lodges and political stability, Botswana certainly stands out from other safaris in Southern Africa.

Similar in size to Texas at 224,000 sq. miles and nestled in between Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia, this beautiful landlocked country makes the most of its land, 40% of which is under conservation to protect the country’s wildlife and habitats.

March to May and June to September during the dry season are the most popular times for arriving visitors.

Table of Contents

Why Botswana for a safari

Botswana is renowned as a leading destination for big 5 wildlife viewing, luxury lodges, premium service and eco safari tours with international visitors flocking from the U.S, U.K. and beyond.

The country also plays host to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the stunning Okavango Delta as well as the biologically diverse area along the Chobe river and park.

Top attractions visitors can expect from a Botswana safari include:

Animals

Visitors are in for a real treat as Botswana is famous for its wildlife with the big 5 present as well as giraffes, hippos, antelopes, African wild dogs, hyenas, zebras, crocodiles, buffaloes, springboks, wildebeest, oryxes, hyenas and many more.

All big 5 game animals can be found roaming including the African bush elephant, the lion, black rhino and white rhino, leopard and the African buffalo.

The humid regions of the country and the ancient lakes are an ideal habitat for more than 500 species of birds including the Kori bustard, ostriches, storks, flamingos, vultures, herons and cranes.

The riverine environments of the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park tend to attract the biggest number and widest range of wildlife, with one of the largest populations of the highly endangered African wild dog.

Wild dog packs roam over large territories and spotting them can be ‘hit-or-miss’ except when they are denning.

Parks & Reserves

Botswana has numerous parks, reserves and sanctuaries , all of which have their own charm, lodging and wildlife attractions.

The country has four national parks: Chobe , Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Gemsbok) , Makgadikgadi Pans & the Nxai Pans and many smaller parks which are national parks in all but name.

Of particular note amongst parks are the Okavango Delta, a truly spectacular experience, as well as Moremi & Chobe.

  • Okavango Delta: Botswana’s greatest natural feature and the world’s largest inland delta.
  • Chobe National Park: Famous for its large animal concentrations, big cats, lion prides and Africa’s largest elephant population at 50,000, visits to Chobe are often combined with day trips to the incredible Victoria Falls in neighbouring Zambia.
  • Moremi Game Reserve: A well-run area of about 1,930 sq miles divided into vast private concessions. The reserve is close to Maun on the eastern side of the Okavango with great wildlife.
  • Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park: Straddling the border with South Africa, this extensive park covers a total area of about 14,670 sq miles of which about 75% is within Botswana and was originally known as Gemsbok National Park.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans National Park : A large salt pan in north-east Botswana and unique due to its landscape rather than its wildlife.
  • Nxai Pan National Park: A large salt pan linked to Makgadikgadi Pan National Park.
  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve: Set in the Kalahari desert and the world’s second-largest protected area of its kind.
  • Linyanti Swamp: At about 350 sq. miles, this area shares a border with the Selinda Reserve . Its two rivers, the Linyanti and the Kwado, help create the marshy landscape.
  • Khutse Game Reserve: Popular with visitors due to the close proximity to Gaborone.
  • Mashatu Game Reserve: Located in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve bordering South Africa.
  • Mokolodi Nature Reserve: A privately administered reserve close to Gaborone and covering an area of just 12 sq. miles, the reserve is well stocked with animals, including white rhino.
  • Savuti Channel/Savute Marsh: The Savuti Channel is an erratic water course that feeds the Savuti Marsh.
  • Khama Rhino Sanctuary: Established in 1992, this is a community based wildlife project that helps save and protect both white and black rhinos.

Covering approximately 8,585 hectares of the Kalahari Sandveld, the sanctuary helps provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and through the sustainable use of natural resources.

Safari tours

A tour in Botswana is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive safari.

Spread across the country, Botswana’s parks and reserves can take several hours/flight to one another.

It is therefore important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Botswana tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)

Guided tour

A popular destination with newlyweds going on safari tours , the country offers all the pampering and comforts one would expect on a Botswana honeymoon safari with similar premium service and pampering on a luxury safari .

Travellers can fly to Botswana via Maun (MAU), Gaborone (GAB) or Kasane (BBK) airports for visitors wondering how to get to Botswana .

A guided safari experience brings the benefit of:

  • Transfer via plane or on a Botswana fly in safari /4×4 to the safari camps and lodges
  • Luxury accommodation packages
  • Meals/drinks all catered for
  • Safari guides and transport
  • Facilities prepared including showers, wifi, cocktails and all requests

safari botswana cost

Botswana self drive safari

For self-drive African safaris, visitors can hire their own 4×4 , whilst accommodation can be secured in park campsites or in the vehicle itself if a campervan option is selected.

Part of the fun of a self drive safari is spotting the abundant wildlife on your own and taking the time to spend viewing your favourite animals.

A normal 2 wheel drive car may be sufficient, and of course cheaper, for some parks however other parks such as the Khama Rhino Sanctuary have deeper sand and a 4*4 will be required.

What to do in Botswana besides a safari

Botswana offers a range of different activities besides safari including:

  • Mokoro (traditional canoe) ride through the Okavango
  • Walk with bushmen discovering nature
  • Botswana horse safari across fence-less landscapes in the Okavango, Makgadikgadi Pans or Mashatu Reserve
  • Mountain Biking in Mashatu
  • Tour a HBO TV set around Gaborone, a series based upon a young Botswana woman who opens the country’s first female-owned detective agency in ‘The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency’
  • Visit the beautiful Kubu Island
  • Enjoy peace and tranquility at Lake Ngami

For more activities visit: Botswana things to do here including an eco safari walk with local bushmen.

Best time to go on a safari in Botswana

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know when to travel to Botswana , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

Overall, May to September is the best time to visit during the dry season.

Botswana safari cost

Botswana is one of the more expensive safari destinations in Africa.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Botswana including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flights, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and activities as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Detailed safari price information can be found here .

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your safari in Botswana including:

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget. This option requires time and know-how to plan for all flights, transport, meals, accommodation and safari tours.

Without the knowledge of specific safari destinations and logistics in navigating an African country, this may be a challenging option for many travelers.

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Botswana where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari or honeymoon safari . These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Tailor-made tours
  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tents, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Visitors can find our selection of the best luxury lodges and camps in Botswana .

Trip preparation

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Botswana: Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

The risk of contracting malaria is considered low. But, it is prevalent in some areas of Botswana, the northern regions in particular where malaria elimination has not yet ensued.

Check with a travel medicine specialist to see if antimalarials should be considered to help prevent malaria contraction.

To enter Botswana, you are not required to take a coronavirus test if you are completely vaccinated. You must provide your immunization certificate both during travel and upon arrival. For further information, see our Botswana vaccine info here .

What factors determine the cost of a safari?

There are three main factors that will make a big difference in the price of your safari:

Our safari pricing includes all local flights, transports, and transfers, but excludes international flights.

Pricing displayed is for adults. Child rates vary between lodges. Some lodges offer reduced rates or family rooms. Contact our experts for personalised recommendations.

Groups of six or more can benefit from negotiated room rates. We strive to offer the best possible rates for your group.

Safari Costs: What to Keep in Mind

We’ll work with you to create a journey that makes the most of your time and money. As a rule, we prefer to include as many of the costs upfront so that there are no unpleasant surprises once you’re on safari.

1. Your accommodation

Accommodation usually makes up the bulk of your safari’s cost, so where you stay has the biggest impact on your budget. Options range widely, from a few hundred dollars to over $3000 a night per person.  We know which hotels and lodges offer the best value for money and these are the ones we’ll recommend. Remember to pay attention to what’s included and excluded. A lodge with all-inclusive rates may seem more expensive, but a lower-priced lodge may charge exorbitant rates for your gin & tonic, laundry, internet or other extras.

2. Your travel dates and time

We can advise you on how to benefit from low season rates.

We can help you take advantage of low-season pricing. Every destination has high season rates, which can be twice as costly as low season rates. There are also shoulder seasons, which are priced in the middle of the two. We can advise you on how to take advantage of shoulder and low season pricing if your travel dates are flexible. It’s crucial to note that the prices displayed on our website – and on other travel sites – are based on off-season rates. If the price you’re given is more than what you find online, it’s usually because you’re looking for travel dates that aren’t during peak season. Obviously, the length of your safari has an effect. Reducing the length of your safari will undoubtedly lower the expense!

3. Your destinations

Island and beach destinations are often less expensive than national parks. Each destination and country you add to your itinerary increases the price of your African safari because of the transport involved as well as possible visa costs. However, it is still more cost effective to do one proper safari and see everything, rather than three smaller ones. Island and beach destinations are often less expensive than national parks as there are no entry or park fees involved, and accommodation is also usually more economical. For example, if we were to book you six days on safari in Tanzania and six days in Zanzibar , it would be less expensive than 12 days on safari. Another option would be to include visits to some of the lesser-known parks and reserves, which are more affordable and often just as good. Popular destinations such as the Serengeti, Masai Mara, the Okavango Delta and gorilla sanctuaries come at a significant premium.

4. Your group size

Game packages, where you fly from camp to camp and join the lodge vehicles for game drives, often seem more affordable because you are sharing vehicle costs with other guests. However, the flights between the camps can negate the savings. Depending on your group size, it can be cheaper to hire your own vehicle (with an optional driver/guide) and drive from camp to camp. Your driver, vehicle and fuel costs remain consistent and can be divided by the number of people in your group. This could save you up to $1000 per person over a week. Once again, these are the kinds of things we can help with.

East African Cost Guidelines

Kenya is home to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park and Samburu National Park, among many others like Mount Meru, Tsavo and the Aberdares. Tanzania counts the equally famous Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Selous and Ruaha among its national parks.

Together, Tanzania and Kenya make up East Africa and are considered to be the birthplace of safari. This is also where you will encounter the Great Wildebeest Migration safari .

Southern African Cost Guidelines

Botswana’s most famous wildlife areas are the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. South Africa is home to the Kruger National Park, Cape Town and Sun City. Namibia’s big hitter is the astonishing Etosha National Park, while Zimbabwe and Zambia share the Victoria Falls.

Namibia and South Africa are the most affordable of all the safari destinations we offer because you can rent a vehicle and drive yourself around, as well as stay in self-catering accommodation. Driving and cooking yourself will bring costs down but will add to the ‘work’ you do on vacation.

Peak season once again falls between July and August, thanks to a dry winter and huge demand from international visitors. The times between high and low season are known as ‘shoulder season’: the rains are starting or ending, the weather is heating up or cooling down and, generally, both availability and rates are good.

South Africa offers the best year-round game viewing. Many camps still close for Zambia’s intense rainy season, which falls between November and May. October is the hottest and driest month in Botswana, which makes for good game viewing but uncomfortable conditions unless you are in an air-conditioned lodge. By November, the rains have scattered the animals, making for challenging game viewing.

How Much Does a Botswana Safari Cost?

Home » How Much Does a Botswana Safari Cost?

Botswana is an incredibly unique and popular wildlife safari destination in Africa. It offers tours that cover a range of budgets, with the most coveted being mid-range to luxury safari experiences, based both on water and land. Botswana operates on a low-volume, high-value pricing model. Due to this approach and the restricted amount of visitors and concessions fees that lodges are required to pay to operate in private reserves, Botswana is one of Africa’s more expensive safari destinations. The costs do go towards an unbelievable safari experience!

Below is a rough guide for Botswana safari pricing, please contact one of our Africa Travel Specialists for exact pricing and special deals that may apply.

safari botswana cost

HIGH SEASON (JULY, AUG, SEP, OCT) PRICES

The high season is Botswana’s most popular safari period when the wildlife viewing is best and the reserves and lodges will be at their busiest.

Entry-level camps in Botswana will cost from around US$500 to US$800 per person sharing per night during the high season.

The more luxurious camps cost from around US$800 per person sharing per night and upwards ( some top-end lodges can be over over US$2000 per person sharing per night!!)

MID TO LOW SEASON (APR, MAY, JUNE, NOV) PRICES

Entry-level camps will cost from around US$380 to US$520 per person sharing per night during the mid to low season.

The more luxurious camps cost from around US$700 per person sharing per night and upwards

GREEN SEASON (DEC, JAN, FEB, MAR) PRICES

Each season offers a unique perspective of Botswana's landscapes and wildlife, affecting accommodation prices. Understanding how the season impacts pricing helps in planning your safari budget effectively

  • Green Season: The months of December to March offer lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife. There is the possibility of rain. Prices are generally lower which makes it a cost-effective time to visit.
  • Shoulder Season: April to June and November is a transition time with moderate prices and weather. It is known to offer good wildlife viewing conditions.
  • Peak Season: July to October is considered the best wildlife viewing period with dry conditions. It leads to higher prices due to demand

Botswana Safari Cost

When planning your Botswana safari, it's important to consider not just the direct safari costs but also additional expenses that can affect your overall budget. These extra costs include visa costs, tipping costs, travel insurance costs, and Botswana flight costs. These are key parts of your budget.

Botswana Visa Cost

Travellers to Botswana may need to budget for visa expenses. Most nationalities are required to pay for a visa, which costs around $34 for a one-month, single-entry visa, and $68 for a five-year, multiple-entry visa. These fees are essential to factor into your Botswana Safari Cost .

Botswana Tipping Costs

Tipping is customary and appreciated in Botswana, contributing to the overall safari experience. It's standard to tip around 10% of the service cost. At camps and lodges, leaving a collective tip for the staff instead of individual tips is a common and accepted practice.

Botswana Travel Insurance Cost

Travellers should make sure they have  Botswana Travel Insurance  for activities they’ll do while on holiday. Most of the activities like horseback riding, bungee jumping and game viewing. It is important to be covered for incidents that relate to wild animals and injury. Visitors should check with their credit card company and workplace benefits to see if they have already done so. If not, it is strongly advised that travel insurance be purchased before departure.

Botswana International Flight Cost

One of the major costs associated with a Botswana safari is international flights. With no direct flights from Europe or North America, most travellers route through Johannesburg or Nairobi. Entry is typically through Maun, the gateway to Botswana Safaris Tours , with round-trip flights from major cities. Here’s what you might expect to pay for flights:

Including these extra expenses in your planning will help make sure your Botswana safari is both enjoyable and stress-free.

Planning your Botswana Safari means looking at how much things cost each day. You can figure out your budget by understanding the daily expenses for different parts of your trip. Whether you're staying in a tent, a lodge, or going on special tours, here's a simple guide to what you might spend each day:

This table helps you see how much you might spend on your Botswana Safari Tours. Prices can change based on the time of year, where you stay, and what you do. To get the most accurate cost, talking to a Falcon Safaris expert is a good idea.

Botswana Safari Cost

Your travel style has a big impact on the prices that you incur during your  Botswana Safari Tours . The more luxury you expect on your holiday the more expensive it might be. Generally, your needs and wants have a big impact on how much you will spend.

The major factors revolve around where you want to stay, the time of year you want to visit, transport and the activities you want to do. The Botswana Safari Cost will be calculated according to that.

Time Of Travel

Botswana has 3 main seasons in which you can travel, the green season, the shoulder season and the peak season.

The green season runs from December to March and is called so because vegetation will be greener due to the rains. Fewer people choose to travel during this time because of the weather but in terms of expenses, this season is very budget-friendly. Camps and lodges are less busy hence they can offer specials and discounts of up to 50%. Prices are generally affordable and you can even choose areas and private concessions which you cannot otherwise choose during peak season.

Shoulder season runs from April to June and is the changing season when business begins to pick up. Vegetation is still green but with little rainfall. The pricing in this season is also very affordable although not as cheap as the green season but it at least is better. You can take advantage of some great specials and packages on offer.

The peak season runs from July to October and is considered the  Best Time To Visit Botswana . Wildlife movements are more predictable, there is no rain and water levels are good hence you can enjoy both water activities and game drives. Many people travel during this time and if you choose to travel during this time consider the fact that it might be a little too expensive.

Length Of Stay

The number of days you decide to stay on  Botswana Safari  also has an impact on your overall expenses. Generally, it is perceived that the more days you stay the more costly it is. However, with  Botswana,  it will depend on where you are staying and what you have decided to include in your itinerary.

Sometimes staying longer is expensive but in some cases, when things like flights and travel expenses are put into consideration, staying for 2 to 3 days in Botswana might be a bit expensive. Most people who go on safari prefer to camp and self-drive. This is a bit more budget-friendly and staying for a longer period will not have a huge impact on the overall cost if this type of safari is chosen.

Type Of Safari You Choose

Botswana has different types of safari options that you can choose from whether you are looking at a luxury or a classic safari, your needs will be well catered for. Your choice of  Safari In Botswana  will have an impact on overall cost

A Botswana Luxury Safari which has premium service and accommodation will be a bit more expensive than a classic safari. This also goes as well for activities that you choose on your safari, for example, a balloon safari will be more expensive than a normal game drive safari. If you prefer to cook for yourself and self-drive then you might as well save a little and reduce costs but if you prefer top-notch service and well-organized trips with transfers and all then you have to prepare to spend a little extra and add on to your Safari Cost Botswana .

Mode Of Transport

Another factor that can add to the Botswana Safari Price is the mode of transport that you decide to use. When travelling from one place to another or from one lodge to the other, you can choose to self-drive or opt for fly-in safaris. Depending on the distance either of the two can be a bit expensive. The longer the distance, driving might be expensive and time-consuming hence flying might be a cheaper option however if the distance is shorter then it is better to drive and not add costs.

Our Travelers Say

Icon

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more. We visited the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the Victoria Falls Tour and a number of national parks in both countries. Rhino tracking was a real adventure! We had tremendous further game drives and saw very many animals - we did the Big Five. We had much more Victoria Falls Activities than planned and enjoyed very much.We strongly recommend Falcon Safaris to everyone planning a trip to Southern Africa and East Africa.

Wonderful trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana with excellent organization and very competent guides

Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.

Exceptional!

We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana. Our lodgings at River View Lodge were just as described- very comfortable and excellent food. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful. If I had to do it again I would arrange a morning boat ride as well. We only did the sunset boat rides and they were the high point of our entire trip- we saw so many animals and our guide was very knowledgeable. Just a great experience. Our lodgings at Oddball's Enclave was rustic and we loved it. So great to disconnect from the world for a bit. Leo, our guide, was the best - got us out and about, saw fantastic wildlife and got back to camp safely each time. Doc manages the camp so well. This whole trip was planned and organized by Falcon Safaris and we could not have been happier.

Fabulous, well planned trip

Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure. I do realize its not within your controle but with limit alternatives and a group of 14 people it becomes an issue to find alternative accomodation if the booking was cancelled.

Factors that affect the cost of a Botswana safari

In this article we are going to try and analyze the different factors that affect the cost of a safari in Botswana as highlighted below.

Nature Of Your Dream Botswana Safari

Botswana offers three 3 main types of safari experiences and these include the private mobile Safari, the tented lodging Safari and the group camping or accommodated safaris as highlighted below

Group camping or accommodated safaris

This is the best option for holidaymakers seeking to explore Botswana on a safari while on a limited budget. In a group you will be able to share different operational costs such as the vehicle costs, the game drive costs and the guide costs which will consequently lower the overall cost of your Botswana Safari . You will be able to enjoy affordable accommodation in tents or in accommodated facilities such as permanent safari tented, camps guest houses or chalets.

Tented lodging Safari

During such expeditions you will fly from one accommodations facility (Lodge) to another. With very minimal road transfers throughout the course of your itinerary, the Botswana safari prices in this category is generally seasonal with the green season that runs from December to March being the least expensive, followed by the shadow season that starts in April to June and November and then the high season that begins in July to October being the most expensive.

The seasonality is caused by a number of factors such as a number of lodges changing their accommodation rates in the festive season as well as during the peak tourist season especially the month of August. These changes however are not constant to all facilities but rather depend on the location of the facility. Another thing is that the surcharges here are not determined by the star rating of the lodge but rather by the available safari activities offered, the quality of guiding, as well as the location of the lodge say whether it is located within a game reserve or a national park or even a private conversation area or a community area.

Usually the price quotation offered on an itinerary within this category includes the following all inbound flights as per your itinerary, full board accommodation (inclusive of all meals minus alcoholic drinks), game viewing activities that are available at each lodge such as Mokoro trips, game drives, motorboat rides and guided walks, in addition to taxes including concession fees, conservation levies and government taxes.

While on different Safari activities you will be sharing them with other guests staying at the same lodge for instance you will share a vehicle during game drives. Tourists traveling with the children are however highly advised to book private game activities as these come with more comfort and privacy as you enjoy a family African safari .

Private Mobile Safari Camps

For private mobile camping safaris holidaymakers will enjoy the comfort of a private vehicle, you will be led by a private guide, explore the very remote wildlife sanctuaries like Savuti, Moremi Reserve and Khwai where you will enjoy up-close wildlife encounters as well as enjoy the under-the-stars dining experience. This involves camping in an area for two to three nights and then the staff relocating you to the next location as per your itinerary as you are out enjoying the various Safari activities such as game drives. A mobile Safari is the perfect choice for those seeking to get away from everybody and will reward you with an exclusively private Safari experience. Mobile safaris can also be combined with lodge stay. These normally tent to be expensive and a good option for ‘big spenders’ with a bigger budget for their holiday

Private mobile camping can be divided into three main categories and these are:

adventure camping: which includes sleeping in doom tents what are pitched at camp grounds with a bucket shower and a communal toilets and you will be provided with clean linen and a sleeping bag;

Affordable camping: this involves sleeping in larger tents that are more spacious to fit a bed and mattress with clean linen

Comfort camping: this is done in the very lavish spacious tents that are well furnished with comfortable bed, a sitting area and en suite bathroom

Your Safari Duration

As earlier mentioned the cost of accommodation per night is lowered by longer stays so the more nights you will stay at a camp the cheaper your overall safari cost. In case you are in Botswana for say a 4 to 7 night safari, we advise that you spend your nights at 2 or if possible one camp to enjoy the special longer-stay discounts on the accommodation cost.

How to plan an affordable Safari in Botswana

Avoid the peak season.

The best way to save money while planning a safari in Botswana is by choosing the perfect travel dates. Botswana’s peak tourist season is from June to September and at that time because of the thriving tourism activities, you can’t get any discounts. However, opting to travel during the green season (off-peak season) that runs from December to March, as well as in the shoulder season that runs in April, Maya and November, you will get a chance to enjoy special pricing, discounts and various good travel deals that will reduce your safari cost.

Opt for Longer Night Stays

Another good way to cut the costs of a safari in Botswana is by staying at a camp for longer nights. This won’t only give you special accommodation discounts, but also reduce on the number of in-bound flights that would connect from one camp to another.

Go Mobile Camping

Think about a unique experience of enjoying an up-close encounter with the wildlife and enjoying dinner out in the open under a star-lit sky. All this can be done n a Botswana Mobile camping Safari and also help you save a lot of money as you can opt to use basic tents rather than the permanent lavish camps that are lavish and very expensive.

Lookout for new facilities

Another good way though not so common is to lookout for facilities / lodges / camps that are newly opened as these offer special discounts to attract holidaymakers.

Have a travel Budget

You are highly advised to have a travel budget to enable your tour operator have a scope in which to work with. You should also be open with your tour operator about your budget restrictions so that they can help you choose budget friendly accommodations and safari activities that suit you well.

frank steenhuisen elephants botswana savuti

Described as “one of Africa’s last wild and open frontiers”, Botswana is the gateway to the safari adventure of a lifetime.

Why Should You Visit a Botswana Safari?

The landlocked country of Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated nations in the world – which is just as well if you’re looking for one of the best safari destinations that money can buy with thinner crowds than in other parts of Africa.

With abundant wildlife overflowing in all directions, vast elephant herds, lion prides and more birds than you can ever hope to spot with your binoculars on a single trip, Botswana has long been established as a mecca for African wildlife and one of the best places on the continent for a luxury safari tour.

Botswana Safari Highlights

From the remote imposing Kalahari Desert to the spectacular swamps of the Okavango Delta, where water travels over 1,000 km from Central Africa and disappears into the sand, never reaching the ocean, this is one country that grabs you once and never lets go.

Central Botswana

The centre of Botswana is home to the famed Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the ancient Makgadikgadi Pans. The Kalahari reserve is the second-largest game reserve in the world, measuring a mammoth 52,800 square kilometres (20,400 sq mi) – more extensive than the Netherlands.

Here, you’ll find serenity and vast open spaces – and almost every African animal you can imagine, all in an area covering 10% of Botswana’s total landmass. If you’re looking for the Botswana safari tour, this is the place to come.

Northern Botswana

Further north, we come to the watery paradise that is the Okavango Delta to the west and Botswana’s Chobe National Park to the east.

With its vast interconnected waterways, the Okavango Delta is widely considered one of Africa’s best wilderness sanctuaries. It is home to a plethora of wild animals, including many endangered species.

Its seasonal flooding attracts visitors from far and wide – both two-legged and four-legged. The Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve, the central reserve in the region, provides a spectacular and pristine wilderness that rivals anything else on the African continent, making it perfect for walking safaris .

In the northeast, we find yet another location guaranteed to give you that safari bucket list feeling in the pit of your stomach. The Chobe National Park, set beside the Chobe River, is the place to be if you want to see vast herds of elephants. With an estimated 120,000 roaming the area, this is the park of many African dreams.

South & The Kalahari Desert

Close to the border with South Africa lies Gaborone, Botswana’s capital. With a population of just under 300,000, the city is charmingly surrounded by national parks or game reserves on all sides – as all cities should be, if you ask us.

But if Gaborone provides Botswana’s modern face, it is the vast tract of land in the southwest where its ancient secrets lie. The Kalahari Desert is not only one of the oldest deserts in the world, but it is a name that has captured the imagination of explorers and travellers for centuries.

An intoxicating land of stark emptiness, this semi-desert savannah is still home to an astonishing array of wildlife, including elephants, antelopes, and giraffes, making it an unforgettable location for Botswana safaris.

  • Population 2 million – highest GDP per capita in Africa
  • 950 meters above sea level, 600 km from the nearest coast
  • 70% of the country is Kalahari desert – flat and arid
  • 40% of the country is dedicated to wildlife areas
  • Ranked 28 out of 163 on the 2016 Global Peace Index, the region has a safe, stable and friendly environment

Unique Safari Experiences in Botswana

Botswana, a land of untouched wilderness and diverse landscapes, offers many safari experiences unlike any other in Africa.

From the luxury lodges dotting its expansive reserves to the intimate walking safaris that bring you face-to-face with nature, Botswana’s unique safari experiences cater to various preferences and styles.

Whether you’re gliding through the waterways of the Okavango Delta, tracking wildlife on foot, or enjoying the exclusivity of a private safari, each experience in Botswana is crafted to offer an unparalleled connection with the wild.

Botswana Luxury Safaris

The nation is world-famous for its luxury safari lodges. It is one of the most sought-after destinations in Africa for higher-end safaris. A Botswana luxury safari is world-class and hard to beat elsewhere in Africa, as most of the top luxury lodges in Botswana come with exclusive private concessions.

Those travelling in style have the combination of a small luxury lodge and exclusive access to some of the most incredible wildlife areas on the continent. This intimacy, privacy, luxury and wilderness combined make this the ultimate destination for a luxury safari.

As a result, Botswana has adopted a ‘low volume, high cost’ model, which means these luxury lodges come with a sizable price tag. Although costly, a Botswana luxury safari is perfect if you want exclusivity, luxury, and the best.

Botswana Walking Safaris

Botswana’s walking safaris are a must for those who crave a closer connection with nature. Led by experienced guides, these safaris let you tread the same paths as the majestic wildlife of Botswana.

Feel the ground under your feet, hear the rustle of leaves, and immerse yourself in the bush. Walking safaris in Botswana offer an intimate and authentic experience, allowing you to appreciate the more miniature wonders of the ecosystem often missed on vehicle-bound tours.

Aside from luxury safaris, Botswana is also an excellent place for adventure safaris, and our favourite means for this is a Mobile Safari .

This involves you exploring some of the most iconic wildlife areas with your private tented camp and crew, who do all the heavy lifting of setting up, cooking delicious meals, and moving the base for you, leaving you to relax and learn from your expert guides on extended game drives and unparalleled game viewing.

Botswana River Safaris

Take to the water for a different perspective on safari. Botswana’s river safaris are a serene and spectacular way to explore. Glide through the Okavango Delta’s intricate network of channels and lagoons, where you can encounter hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birdlife.

These safaris offer a peaceful yet exhilarating way to view wildlife, all from the unique vantage point of a boat or traditional mokoro canoe.

Botswana Private Safari: Exclusivity at Its Best

For those seeking a more personalised experience, a Botswana private safari offers exclusivity and flexibility. You can tailor your safari to your interests, whether focusing on certain wildlife, visiting specific regions, or engaging in preferred activities.

Private safaris offer a more intimate experience with the wilderness. They are often accompanied by expert guides who cater solely to your group.

What is the Best Time to Visit Botswana for a Safari?

Botswana has something to offer all year round, each season delivering extraordinary adventure and unique wildlife experiences. When planning your trip, consider what you hope to get from your Botswana safari.

If you’re a bird watcher, the wet season would be best for you. However, the dry season would be the ideal time to visit if you’re looking for large herds of buffalo and elephants.

Wet Season (November to April)

Rains are short-lived but very heavy, with temperatures soaring at the beginning of the wet season before petering out towards the end to maintain warm evenings towards the end of the season.

Thunderstorms move through the region quickly, spectacularly lighting the landscape and revealing a lush landscape rich with wildlife and greenery.

Dry season (May to October)

During the dry season, the rainwater that has fallen in the Angola highlands starts to flood down through the Okavango Delta, creating an oasis of wetlands and forests which attracts one of the largest concentrations of animals anywhere on the planet.

The season starts with warm days and cold nights (May to August), which leads to October being the hottest and driest month.

Must-try experiences

Create more than utterly unforgettable memories.

If you belong to that rare breed of traveller that’s looking beyond the latest hotspot for an extraordinary sincere and handcrafted experience, one that brings you as close as possible to the land, wildlife and people at hand – you’ve come to the right place. Think guided bushman nature walks following along the paths animals roam free, habitual meerkats keenly observing the dessert from atop your head, and scenic helicopter flights rewarding unreal aerial views of the Okavango Delta’s most remote and inaccessible spaces.

Immersive adventures that engage all your senses

Slow life right down and encounter the bush from an entire new perception, one that highlights the small miracles, from smelling and tasting wild medicinal herbs to listening the alarm call of the grey go-away bird to observing herds of red lechwa antelope drinking from the very water you are gliding through. Follow waterways that were once taken by river Bushman and BaYei people centuries ago or tread mindfully in the tracks of the Okavango Delta’s most celebrated wildlife.

Adrenaline-seeking ventures, beyond the classic safari

More often than not awarding travellers with the rare opportunity to uncover the untamed landscape with very few others, Botswana offers more than your usual safari experience, but rather one that is intimate, remote and exclusive. Promising up-close views of unique wildlife and vegetation, take to the roads, rivers or skies, reveling in the semi-aquatic antelope, intricate network of winding channels, impressive Tiger fish fishing excursions and scenic flights uncovering far-flung inaccessible spaces.

How to Plan a Safari in Botswana, According to Experts

A beginner's guide to safari vacations in Botswana.

An African safari ranks high on the wish list of many a world traveler. Of the millions of adventurers who make the trek here annually, the (ahem) lion’s share will end up in the game reserves of Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania — enduringly popular destinations for wildlife viewing in Africa. But in recent years, Botswana has been nipping at the heels of those countries.

Botswana is home to diverse landscapes that span delta to desert, and the local culture is vibrant and inviting. The Botswana bush is teeming with majestic fauna, including Africa’s largest population of elephants — they are protected by a government focused on conservation, and tour operators committed to the same. And a safari here means you get to enjoy all of the above with far fewer humans than in its aforementioned continental counterparts.

“Botswana is an anomaly in Africa,” said Ian Proctor, president and managing director of Ultimate Africa Safaris . “It is considered one of the safest and most stable democracies on the continent.”

Proctor has been preparing customized itineraries for safari-going clients since 1996, and during that time he estimates he’s personally enjoyed more than 250 experiences across the African continent. Botswana has become his go-to destination, and in no small part because of the modernization of its government.

“Citizens receive free universal health care, and LGBTQ+ communities are legally recognized,” he cited as examples. “And with a very small population, its wilderness areas are unparalleled — and, importantly, uncrowded.”

Ready to pack your bags? Here’s how to plan your Botswana safari, along with insight from experts on what you can expect along the way.

How to Get to Botswana

The most common way to get to the Botswana bush is by way of Safarilink flights out of Maun National Airport (MUB), in the northwestern part of the country. Midsized runways here can’t accommodate jumbo jets, so you won’t find direct service from the U.S. That’s a blessing in disguise, though. The added stop you’ll need — in either Johannesburg or Cape Town — weeds out those tourists who aren’t willing to brave nearly 16 hours of total flight time.

Really, it’s not nearly as arduous as it seems. American carriers now offer multiple direct options per day into South Africa from New York and Atlanta. And if you work with an outfitter like Ultimate Africa Safaris, you can bookend your safari with well-curated layovers in those connecting cities.

Best Times to Go to Botswana

Weather-wise, Botswana is at its most inviting from early May through the end of September. Temperatures are more moderate during these winter months, and malaria is less prevalent. Things start to get somewhat wet come mid-October, but if birding is your thing, the rainy season is precisely when you want to arrive. The Nata Bird Sanctuary along the northeastern edge of the massive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is the world’s largest breeding ground for Lesser and Greater Flamingo. This ancient, Switzerland-sized lakebed is a shrimp-infested food source for the birds, which pass through by the hundreds of thousands from November through March.

Best Places to Stay

When it comes to world-class safari camps, this part of Africa is chockablock with options. They run the gamut from rugged to ultra-luxe and are scattered across every corner of the country’s dynamic terrain. You’ll want to allot ample time to explore the Okavango Delta. This massive marshland in northern Botswana boasts a footprint of nearly 8,000 square miles and is regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. From there, you can transfer by bush plane to the outskirts of the Kalahari Desert to enjoy a wholly different landscape.

“Botswana dedicates so much space for wildlife — we are actually in the top 10 percent in the world for wildlife conservation,” said Super Sande, a native of Botswana who has been a guide in the country for 32 years. “Between the wet and dry parts of our country, the diversity of game that you see is like nowhere else. You can be surrounded by thousands of zebra and wildebeest and be the only car there. It’s so special.”

Logistically, it’s easiest to take all of these wonders in by booking an all-inclusive package with a tour operator. One such example is Natural Selection's “Botswana Explorer” package, which covers multitudes of terrain over 10 days, including an overnight on a Delta houseboat and luxe stays in private game reserves. The program starts at $8,235 per person, which includes a guide, transfers, and meals along the way.

As for individual standouts, Jack’s Camp is king of the desert. The legendary outpost along the edge of the salt pan underwent a full rebuild in 2021, and it now boasts rooms with private plunge pools and bedside air conditioning. Its common area is the aesthetic equivalent of stepping into the late 19th century, anchored by a Persian tea tent and a full bar with a comprehensive collection of cultural artifacts. Prices at the year-round lodge range from $1,450 to $2,495 per night, depending on room size and time of year.

In the Delta, a similar level of luxury can be found at Tuludi . The seven-room property sits on the Khwai Private Reserve — 772 square miles of floodplain awash with wildlife. Suites feature outdoor baths and plunge pools. Don’t be surprised if you’re visited in the evening hours by the local herd of elephants who enjoy feeding on foliage here once the sun has set.

Later this year, Tawana Camp will become the newest option in the Okavango, and the only camp located within the protected Moremi Game Reserve. This exclusivity is owed to a first-of-its-kind partnership between Natural Selection and the BaTawana nation — who have stewarded the land since the late 18th century (the camp takes its name from the nation's current ruler). It will feature all the trappings of five-star living, including butler service and its own gym. The whole camp is positioned alongside a gently rolling river crowded with hippos, lions, and zebra.

What You’ll See in Botswana

Peter & Beverly Pickford Wildlife Photography/Courtesy of Natural Selection

If you stay on a riverfront camp such as Duke’s , you can head out into the water on traditional canoe-like vessels known as mokorom, and from this vantage point, you’ll spy African fish eagles and saddle-billed storks along the shore. You’ll also likely paddle past hippos, whose eyes hover menacingly just above the waterline. Back on dry land, lions prowl in outsized prides, leopards carry slain impala into the trees, and baboons scamper across the plains by the dozen.

Elephant fans will want to book a stay at Hyena Pan , hidden among the thick mopane forests of Khwai Private Reserve. A short game drive brings you to a repurposed shipping container abutting a watering hole. This is the Elephant Hide, and it affords an intimate spectacle of the largest living land animal, which congregate just a few inches from a narrow viewing slot fashioned into the side of a steel wall.

In the salt pan, you can marvel at colorful creatures of all shapes, sizes, and speeds. The edge of the ancient lakebed is inundated with meerkats, Cape hares, aardwolves, hyenas, and cheetahs, to name but a small cross section of species.

“I see the most interesting things here at night, especially,” Sande said. “I just recently saw two honey badgers fighting off some jackals. No two game drives are ever the same.”

A lot of a safari experience depends on good fortune, of course. But luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, and the difference between a good guide and a great guide is careful planning, according to Kagisano Bapute, who steers guests toward unforgettable game viewing in and around Tuludi Camp.

“You have to stay up to date with everything going on from day to day, and from season to season,” Bapute added. “You’re always checking in with a network of trackers, and you have to be working around the clock, so you’re not just going out there blindly once you have guests with you.”

What You’ll Eat and Drink

While staying at any high-end safari camp, you can expect robust meals that rotate regularly, often featuring staples of Western cuisine. At Tuludi, for example, elegant pasta dishes are mainstays on the menu. Sable Alley has its own pizza station.

While it’s easy to gravitate toward the familiar — and there are certainly some great hamburgers to be enjoyed in the bush — if you’ve come all this way, do as the locals do and save room for seswaa . The flavorful beef stew is frequently served for supper along with local bread, phapatha . Vegetarians can keep an eye out for morogo , a spinach dish studded with onions and tomatoes.

When it comes to cocktails, gin is king here, and Okavango even has its very own. The award-winning eponymous offering is distilled with local botanicals, including the mopane seed. At Sable Alley, the bar staff is working it into the Bluebird: two parts gin, one part blue curaçao, and a splash of simple syrup, garnished with a slice of lemon.

Alternatively, book a stay at San Camp and you’ll drive into the heart of the Kalahiri for cocktail hour. A makeshift bar is set up atop the pale, crusted earth, just in time for sunset. Once it gets dark, a multi-course feast is prepared by campfire, with nary another soul in sight. For dessert, gaze up at the most dazzling star-scape you’ll ever see.

Although Botswana is one of the most expensive destinations to visit in Africa, it’s on every safari-goer’s bucket list for some very good reasons: its vast swathes of untamed wilderness, fence-free national parks and wealth of wildlife.

The country has adopted a conservation strategy based on high-end, low-volume tourism, which means it’s free of crowds and mass-market resorts. There is no shortage of expensive lodges: butlers to draw your bath; tasting menus to rival Michelin-star restaurants; well-stocked wine cellars that wouldn’t look out of place in either London or New York. But with some savvy planning, Botswana doesn’t have to break the bank.

Here are our top tips to stretch your budget further in Botswana.

Group of african kids jumping in the sunset, Botswana

Daily costs in Botswana

  • 4WD rental per day : from US$150
  • Camping in national parks and reserves: from US$20 per person
  • Camping in a campsite: around US$30 per tent
  • Double room in a campsite (self-catering): from US$50
  • Double room in a mid-range lodge (half-board): from US$100 per person
  • Double room in a four-star lodge (all-inclusive): from US$500 per person
  • Suite in a luxury lodge (all-inclusive) : from US$1000 per person
  • Intercity bus: from US$25
  • Coffee: US$2.50
  • Sandwich: US$4
  • Dinner for two: US$22
  • Beer/pint at the bar: US$3
  • Scheduled flight from Maun to Kasane: around US$65
  • Scenic flight in the Okavango Delta (45 minutes): around US$100
  • Canoe trip in the Okavango Delta: around US$100

Travel to luxury lodges during the safari shoulder season

Good deals are rarer than black rhino sightings during Botswana’s peak season (June and September). Consider traveling in the shoulder season instead (April–May and October–November). This is when you can bag a bargain on accommodations and 4WD car rentals. The weather can be unpredictable as the seasons change from wet to dry and back again, but Botswana has no shortage of wildlife action, especially around permanent water sources.

Also, ensure you check the flight distance of your chosen luxury lodge from Maun. It's faster to fly, but the further your lodge, the more fuel and the pricier the return ticket. To bring the costs down you can drive to some luxury stays in the southeastern delta and Khwai areas, or even ask about boating access between camps.

Embrace the rainy season for a great Botswana deal

Green season (aka the wet rainy season) from December to March is cheaper still, as some lodges slash their rates by up to 40% – though some shut entirely, especially in the wettest months of January and February. Roads and tracks can become difficult to navigate, but the rains bring lush landscapes and the zebra migration commences at Nxai Pan National Park. Areas like Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta are so jam-packed with wild creatures that it really doesn’t matter which time of year you go.

A Land Cruiser cuts through the Bush in Botswana, following a dirt track with a women sat inside

Set off on a self-drive safari and save

If you’re confident behind the wheel of a 4WD, a self-drive safari is one of the most wallet-friendly ways to explore Botswana: a week’s rental can cost less than a night in a luxury lodge. As a bonus, you can go from desert to delta at your own speed. Want to spend a couple of hours watching a playful pride of lions, or staking out a wild dog den? No problem.

You still need to be fully prepared. Plan your route (no driving after dark) and arrange your campsite reservations and national park permits in advance. Download an offline map such as Tracks4Africa and consider renting a satellite phone for any off-the-grid emergencies.

Rent the vehicle from a company such as Avis, or pay a bit more for a fully equipped 4WD, complete with a rooftop tent and cooking gear, from a self-drive safari specialist such as Drive Botswana , which can also organize your itinerary and book accommodation for you. The only extra costs will be fuel, food, drinking water and firewood, which you can pick up cheaply in Kasane or Maun .

Join a small-group adventurous mobile safari

Join a small-group 4WD tour and you’ll set up camp in different bush locations while eating under the stars and leaving no footprint. You’ll be surrounded by the wilderness from the moment you unzip your tent, and you’ll travel with a top-notch guide who makes wildlife spotting easy.

If you’re happy being hands-on – pitching and taking down your tent, washing dishes and helping dismantle and set up camp – a semi-participation safari is the cheapest option. You’ll share your two-person tent, the bush toilet and bucket shower; all you need is a sleeping bag.

Otherwise, you can upgrade to a fully serviced mobile safari – still a fraction of the price of a high-end lodge – where your walk-in tent comes with a camp bed and an en-suite bathroom. Look into Letaka Safaris ’ 10-day Northern Highlights all-inclusive safari (from US$3725 per person during the green season).

A mokoro (traditional canoe) tour through the waters of the Okavango Delta in Botswana

Hop onto a mokoro canoe campout from Maun

Most (pricey) luxury lodges in the delta organize mokoro (canoe) trips, but you can also arrange your own mokoro adventure from Maun. The Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust is an overarching association for all local polers and operates in the eastern Okavango in the NG32 concession, which is roughly an hour's drive north of Maun, depending on water levels.

Outings range from day trips (with a round-trip 4WD drive of two to three hours to the point of embarkation) to affordable multi-day camping excursions on islands encircled by floodwaters, which makes carefully considered planning an absolute must. Most trips also include guided nature walks, so please bring a hat, decent shoes and sunscreen.

There are two ways to support these community polers. Book directly with the trust office in Maun and bring all your own gear, such as tents, food and cooking equipment to overnight in the delta. Alternatively, use a mobile safari operator, which provides all the camping kit (down to en suite pit latrine ablutions and stretchers for a decent sleep) plus excellent meals, so all you have to do is kick back and enjoy the ride.

Board an overland truck to tick off major sights

Group safaris come in all shapes and sizes: if you’re time-rich and cash-poor, overlanding in a purpose-built truck is a time-honored way to explore the African continent, from Cairo to Cape Town and all points in between.

With companies such as On the Go Tours and Intrepid , Botswana is usually teamed up with Victoria Falls , Namibia and South Africa for 10-day itineraries and longer. These options are not only cheaper than a small-group tour, with campsites, meals and some excursions included, but they’re also a great way to meet fellow travelers, especially if you’re visiting Botswana solo.

Choose a drive-in instead of a fly-in camp

Because of Botswana’s sheer size and the remoteness of some of its parks and reserves, some camps can only be accessed by budget-busting charter flights, so choose protected spaces and stays that can be easily reached by road, such as the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai area, the easy-to-access Chobe National Park, or visit Baines’ Baobabs Nxai Pan National Park .

Focus on one national park or reserve

You don’t have to dip into different national parks and reserves to experience a range of habitats and wildlife, and focusing on a single region cuts down on the cost of vehicle rental or transfers.

Decide your priorities: if you’ve got an urge to see elephants, head to Chobe. If you’re desperate to see African wild dogs, try Moremi Game Reserve. If you want to mingle with meerkats, head to Gweta and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.

Swap a luxury lodge for a tent

Wild camping is illegal in Botswana, but the country has no shortage of brilliant campsites. If you want to be immersed in nature, opt for an unfenced area of a national park or reserve and expect to encounter numerous wild visitors. Some sites have a water faucet and a fire pit, and they all have an ablution area with shared bathrooms and showers. You need to book a space in advance, especially from June through September, and make sure you set up camp before it gets dark.

Or you can opt for somewhere livelier to pitch your tent, like Planet Baobab , and enjoy the open-air bar-cum-restaurant and smart facilities, all towered over by statuesque baobab trees that look a lot like the eternally wise Deku Tree from the Legend of Zelda game series.

Save money by basing yourself in the urban jungle

It might not be as atmospheric as wilderness camping, but basing yourself in Maun – the gateway to the Okavango Delta, Nxai Pans and the Central Kalahari – or Kasane, a pebbles-throw from Chobe riverfront, will give you access to more wallet-friendly accommodations, grocery stores and local restaurants. Use the money you save to splurge on day-long game drives, sunset cruises and even scenic flights.

Look out for budget-friendly lodges in five-star locations

If you’d be happier with four solid walls and a roof, you can still save money on your trip to Botswana. Savvy travelers should seek out less pricey accommodations in the same vicinity as the super-luxe safari lodges: budget-oriented digs might not have all the bells and whistles, sure, but they’ll share the same landscapes and wild encounters.

For example, Planet Baobab is the cheaper cousin of the renowned Jack’s Camp in the Makgadikgadi Pans. If you don’t want to camp, you can book into a rondavel-style room. Game drives will get you up close to desert-adapted lions, meerkats and the dazzling zebra migration.

Wildlife watching can be done from the road

With no fences keeping wildlife contained to reserve boundaries, wildlife often crosses the major highway routes in Northern Botswana between Nata and Kasane as you drive towards Chobe National Park, and also Nata and Maun, which passes through the Makgadikgadi National Park. It’s not uncommon to encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, sables and even Southern ground hornbills on these tarred roads.

6 Questions About Botswana Luxury Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

safari botswana cost

Why should I choose Botswana for a luxury tour?

“No other country does luxury safari packages quite like Botswana. A handful of high-level operators, usually with a strong background in conservation, share the market with independent safari companies. Fierce competition ensures places that don’t provide the highest standards of comfort, luxury and attention to detail simply don’t survive long. The overall offering gets better with each passing year, as each operator tries to outdo the others when it comes to luxury accommodation, world-class food, activities, and conservation credentials. The remoteness of so much of Botswana’s prime wildlife territory adds an additional charm to the experience. A touch of ‘the exclusive’ goes with the supremely comfortable accommodation. A real sense of personal service is another essential element in any Botswana luxury safari.”

What is included in a Botswana luxury safari?

“Most Botswana luxury tours offer all-inclusive rates. The details may differ from one operator to the next, but as a general rule the cost of your safari will include three meals a day, all transport, luxury accommodation and most activities. But the typical all-inclusive package does leave room for a few additional costs. For a start, the cost of flying into and between the various camps and lodges in the Okavango Delta and elsewhere is not always included in quoted safari costs. Some of these lodges and camps can only be reached via small plane. Ask your operator if you’re unsure about what is included. It may come as a surprise to find that you will not, despite the significant prices you’ve paid, have a safari vehicle to yourself and in fact will be sharing with other travelers. If you want a private guide and vehicle for your party, you will have to pay extra. Some of the more remote lodges and tented camps also have limited electricity, so do you really want the sound of a generator in the background? Many camps and lodges don’t have wi-fi. Beer and wine are usually included but top-shelf champagnes and other spirits are sometimes considered extras as well.”

Do luxury safaris always focus on the Okavango Delta?

“No. Many Botswana luxury tours do focus on the Delta though and with good reason. The Delta is one of Africa’s best places to see wildlife, and nowhere else in the country has the same choice when it comes to luxury camps and lodges. However, Botswana’s safari portfolio extends throughout the country. Chobe National Park is a vast protected area in the country’s northeast, and home to Africa’s densest elephant populations and some of Africa’s largest elephants. The park includes the wonderful Chobe riverfront (river-borne safari, anyone?) and the wild plains and swamps of Savuti. On the Okavango Delta’s southern fringe, Moremi Game Reserve has numerous luxury options. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the arid complement to all that water further north. Its golden grassland valleys shelter a handful of upmarket tented camps and lodges. In the country’s east, the often-neglected Tuli Block is another possibility.”

Can you describe a typical day on a Botswana luxury safari?

“Your day usually begins with a soft African voice coming out of the darkness to wake you just before dawn. You will often be served a hot drink and light breakfast snack, before setting out on a game drive or morning walk. The early start to the day happens with good reason: this is when most animals are active and easier to see. The duration of any game drive depends on what you see, you may be done in a couple of hours or five. Either way, mid-morning usually involves a return to camp for a more substantial breakfast, followed by time to relax as the heat of the African day takes hold. Then it’s lunch, followed by more time for relaxation (some luxury lodges and camps have a spa) or the journey on to the next camp. Afternoon tea is a noble safari tradition of varying formality depending on where you are. It occurs just before the afternoon game drive. At sunset, your driver will pull over and extract from the vehicle a cool box filled with drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic (a gin and tonic is the classic safari sundowner). A night drive may follow with a spotlight for seeing creatures of the night. Then a return to camp, dinner and perhaps some entertainment close to the campfire.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“The safari tent is the signature form of the Botswana luxury safari and is sure to be a highlight of your trip. Usually set atop a low platform, this canvas structure enables you to feel protected from the African wild yet be at one with it. You’ll hear lions roaring, elephants eating and all manner of night sounds. The typical safari tent has two main parts: the living area with a bed, writing desk and places to sit; and the partially separated bathroom area with shower and toilet. Depending on the remoteness of your camp, camp attendants may need to heat the water for your shower, so remember to give them a little notice. Most tents also have a deck where you can sit and admire the view. The other main possibility is a lodge. The best will be sleek-lined, stylish structures at one with their surroundings. Lodge rooms are usually larger than tents. Some are simply magnificent. Some camps even combine the two – a solid frame on three sides with a canvas front and/or roof. Regardless of whether you’re in a tent or in a room, you’ll need an escort to walk you to your lodgings after dark to make sure you don’t surprise any animals along the way.”

How much will this safari cost?

“As a general guide, luxury safari packages will cost around US$860 per person per day. But if you choose the most luxurious lodges or camps, the price can easily be twice that amount. Prices of luxury safaris in Botswana can go sky-high – there really does seem to be no limit to how much some travelers are willing to pay for their perfect holiday. It may cost more if you’re traveling alone: the cost of the single supplement is around 75% of the price for two people traveling together. The all-inclusive prices mean that additional costs are few. At this upper end of the market, the standard of accommodation is where you’ll notice the biggest price differences, although food is increasingly an integral part of the high-end safari in Botswana.”

How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. Read more on the breakdown of these costs below.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day.

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris.

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February.

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions.

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service.

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want.

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit.

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

The Best African Safari Destinations

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly.

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

  • Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
  • Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
  • Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
  • Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent.

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

  • Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
  • Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas.
  • Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
  • Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well.

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

  • Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
  • Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
  • The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans.
  • Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.

Staying at Abu Camp gets you up close and personal with elephants. Since the camp is next to a lagoon, there is a herd of elephants that call this camp home. There’s even a chance to sleep in the elephant boma for the ultimate experience. You can also experience every type of safari you want, whether it’s a game drive or a boat safari.

Abu Camp has super comfy accommodations with modern furnishings and all the luxuries you would see in any other hotel. There’s a plunge pool to cool off during the day while you wait for your evening safari. Each private canvas tent overlooks the Delta for amazing views.

Tanzania is home to the well-known Serengeti, known for the safaris that explore the great herd. It is also the home to Mount Kilimanjaro, where the most adventurous can summit its peak. This place is basically the home of everything you think of when someone says “Africa.” The most popular safari parks in Tanzania are:

  • Serengeti National Park- The world’s most popular destination for a safari.
  • Ruaha National Park- The largest park in Tanzania with many elephants and giraffes.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area- Home to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find the largest population of lions in the world .
  • Lake Manyara National Park- Home to a massive lake where you can spot animals looking for water during the dry s eason.
  • Mikumi National Park- Mostly flat grassland, making it easy to spot wildlife.

For the best views over the Serengeti day and night, Klein’s Camp is a great place to stay for your safari. It is situated just on the border of the national park, so they are one of the only camps to offer open-air night drives. It is also in the perfect position to watch over the Serengeti from your room.

Klein’s camp feels extremely exclusive because they have 10,000 hectares of privately leased land. You can go offroading, go any time of day, or follow a zebra trail. They will also take you on specialized photography tours and visit the Maasai village to see their unique culture.

South Africa

South Africa is where you want to go to save a few dollars. There is plenty of wildlife, but it has better infrastructure than most other safari destinations. That means there’s more opportunity to do a self-guided tour, which saves you tons. There are also great guided tours too. The best reserves in South Africa are:

  • Kruger National Park- The most popular park in South Africa with the big five.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve- A malaria-free, affordable park with rare wild dogs.
  • Sabi Sands Game reserve- A private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve- Famous for cheetah sightings.
  • Tswalu Kalahari Reserve- The largest private game reserve in South Africa.

If you want to stay in luxury on your South African safari, Loapi Tented Camp gives you the safari aesthetic. However, it comes complete with a butler, fully stocked kitchens, and an environmentally friendly plunge pool. Each of the six accommodations has plenty of space between each, giving you a secluded feel.

Each safari home has its own butler, a private chef to cook all your meals en-suite, a study with wifi, a full bar, and indoor/outdoor showers. You will also get your own safari vehicle with a private tour guide to take you out every evening. If you don’t feel like taking a vehicle out, go horseback instead.
