Osprey Packs Meridian 60L 22″ Wheeled Carry On Review

Wait a sec, “wheeled” carry on? Are we sure we’re talking about the same Traveling Jackie? Yes! I normally carry a Farpoint 55 on my back, paired with a shoulder bag for long-term travel , but my poor shoulders need a break.

I’m in the middle of a one-month Euro trip. I traveled here from my home in Montana and I’ll be returning there when this month is over (instead of moving on to another destination), so this was the perfect opportunity for me to try out a new bag, with wheels, for a short-term trip. For this trip, which includes visiting friends and going to Oktoberfest in Germany, a bike ride through the Swiss Alps, and an adventure to Elba island and a conference in Tuscany, I chose the Meridian 60L carry-on.

A woman is standing outside an airport departure area with a blue Osprey Packs Meridian 60 and a matching blue backpack. She is smiling and dressed in casual travel attire, including a maroon dress, black leggings, a blue vest, and brown ankle boots. Luggage carts are visible in the background near the entrance labeled "Door 9 Departures."

Why the Meridian 60L 22”?

I chose it because:

  • It fits as a carry-on (carry-on dimensions vary by airline, but in general they are 22x14x9 inches)
  • It has a detachable daypack
  • I wanted wheels
  • I wanted the option to carry it as a backpack if I needed to (it has hidden backpack straps)

In many ways, this is like a wheeled version of the Farpoint 55, which is exactly what I wanted… or so I thought (wait for it).

Here is my star rating from 1-5 (1 being not so great and 5 being great) of the following attributes of the Meridian, with explanations:

1. Use as a Carry-On: 4

In my opinion, this pack definitely wouldn’t work as a carry-on if you leave the daypack attached . It sticks out too (becomes too fat) far for overhead bins. Even separated, be careful not to stuff the main part too full or you might have trouble shoving it in smaller overhead compartments.

That being said, you could argue this exact thing about the Farpoint 55, and I managed to carry that on several flights while it was all attached together. It’s a risk. I traveled with the two pieces of the Meridian separated, and this definitely worked better for me.

The Meridian is 22”, which is the max size allowed for a carry-on bag. The bag itself, empty, is about 8 lbs, so be careful with weight. It is narrow enough for airplane aisles, and the handles are nice and sturdy so it’s easy to lift and arrange into the overhead bins.

This image shows two blue Osprey Meridian travel backpacks placed side by side against a white wall. One is smaller and labeled "Meridian," while the larger one is labeled "Meridian 60." A teal jacket is draped over the larger backpack. The scene suggests organized packing and preparation for travel.

2. Quality of the Meridian: 5

The grip is comfortable on the hand and the extended part feels stable. The wheels have been dragged through dirt and rocks and are holding up quite nicely. It doesn’t slide around on trains, metros, etc. because of the grip of the wheels. It is not front heavy, it stands on its own nicely even when the daypack is attached.

3. The Meridian’s Detachable Daypack: 2

I am used to the flexible daypack of the Farpoint, and the Meridian’s daypack is much more rigid and less comfortable. It does not have a flat bottom, but instead has a sort of angle that prevents it from staying in place when you prop it up, it slides down (spilling drinks, things fall out if it’s open, etc.). The water bottle holders don’t work well when the pack is full.

I do like that it has a laptop sleeve and inside zipper pocket and outside zipper pocket just big enough for sunglasses. I wouldn’t have gotten this bag if it didn’t have the daypack, because I love this feature, I just think the piece itself could be designed better. The straps are a little narrow around the neck, making it uncomfortable to wear with weight.

I like the way it attaches to the bigger part of the bag, just with buckles instead of a zipper. However, the buckles are not adjustable, which makes attaching the daypack a bit difficult (or impossible) if both parts of the bag are stuffed all the way full.

4. Compartments and Straps: 5

Inside the main part of the bag, there are compression straps that I definitely used, in conjunction with my packing cubes , to save space. Along the sides and on the flap of the pack are zippered pockets, perfect sizes for keeping odds and ends items secure.

There is also a zippered pocket at the top that perfectly fit my shoes, so I always kept a pair of shoes in there and didn’t have to worry about them getting any clothes dirty.

This image shows several packing cubes arranged on a carpeted floor next to an open travel backpack. The packing cubes are in various colors, including orange, teal, blue, and green, and are neatly packed to maximize space. The open backpack reveals its bright green interior with straps for securing items, indicating organized packing for efficient travel.

5. Backpack Straps: 3?

I hauled this thing up and down four flights of stairs in Germany, four times, and not once did I think it would be more convenient for me to use the backpack straps rather than just pick it up. The bag itself wasn’t that heavy, even packed full with all my stuff, and with its nice handle, it’s easier and faster in the moment to just pick it up and carry it that way.

In the end, I ended up stuffing extra clothes and other items into the hidden backpack strap zipper pocket. I don’t think think the backpack straps are completely necessary, and interestingly enough, they are clipped in and can be removed completely if you don’t want to use them, although that seems to defeat the purpose of getting a convertible bag. I do like the extra hidden pocket they provide, and they don’t take up that much extra space or weight, I just haven’t found them either useful or harmful, so they get a neutral rating.

My Overall Rating for Osprey Packs Meridian 60L: 3.8 stars

Conclusions:

  • If adjustments were made to the daypack to make it stand up on its own, be a bit more comfortable around the neck, and hold water bottles better, this pack would’ve gotten 5 stars from me.
  • I love the quality, the arrangement of elements, and the design, but I would only recommend this bag if you need it for its particular functions. For example, the detachable daypack came in handy when I was on my bike tour and was only allowed one piece of luggage for our luggage transfer. I just clipped on the daypack and was good to go. However, if you don’t need the hidden straps or detachable daypack, it would be better to get a different version, perhaps the Ozone , and pair it with your favorite daypack or shoulder bag that you know is comfortable to carry.
  • I will remove the backpack straps and continue to use the main part of this bag for short trips, but I will pair it with a different daypack that is more comfortable.

The Osprey Meridian 60 vs. Ozone Convertible 50 vs. Sojourn 45: A Careful Comparison of the Carry-On Wheeled Backpacks

Update: These three lovely pieces from Osprey are discontinued and usually no longer available (though you may sometimes still get lucky with the Amazon links below. But we have updates more on the current best rolling backpacks for travel from Osprey and others .

Osprey makes three convertible carry-on-sized rolling backpacks: the Osprey Meridian 60L, Osprey Ozone Convertible 50L, and the Osprey Sojourn 45L. This article offers a side-by-side comparison of the three.

We’ve reviewed the Osprey Meridian 60L here and it’s currently our favorite rolling backpack carry-on . And since we encourage folks to travel light and flexible, it’s also our overall favorite travel piece, period.

But yes, we get it, you might have different needs, and prefer something like the more backpacker-focused Sojourn 45L , which is more comfortable to carry on your back for long stretches over uneven terrain.

Note that the lightest of the group, the Osprey Ozone Convertible 50L, is discontinued but still sometimes available (especially used) at the links we provide in the table below.

All three bags in this article are carry-ons; we also compare the larger, full-sized versions of these three bags separately (and give our overall opinion on the best large rolling backpack ). But we wrote those articles for the plodding losers who can’t manage to travel light.

We hope that pros like you, the dear readers of the present piece, can take on the world with just a carry-on, and we think that these three Osprey convertibles are the very best. But since Osprey’s own marketing explanations of their packs are scattered ,  vague , and terse , we’re hereby providing a full, side-by-side explanation of the options in order to help you best choose. Enjoy!

Originally published April 18, 2017. Updated on July 17, 2018. Updated on May 29, 2019 concerning the Ozone Convertible’s unavailability. On Nov 10, 2023 we updated about all being discontinued.

Quick Comparison Table: Osprey Meridian, Ozone, and Sojourn Carry-Ons

Osprey Meridian 60L/22″

osprey meridian travel bag

• Sober, professional style:  More muted color options, sleeker, more “pro” look

  • Light:  8.37 lbs/ 3.80 kg; designed more for durability than to absolutely minimize weight

• Highroad Chassis: large wheels and good clearance for bumpy roads

• Good comfort as backpack: The shoulder harness can be quickly snapped on; no hip belt

• Feature-rich:  Exterior water-bottle pockets, accessory pockets, zippered top pocket, laptop sleeve, compression straps, etc.

Meridian 60/22

Osprey Ozone Convertible 50L/22″ (Discontinued; sometimes available used)

• Youthful, techy style:  Sporty/tech flair, though black option looks quite a bit like Meridian

• Lighter:  6.3 lbs/2.86 kg

• Great comfort as backpack:  Shoulder and hip straps quickly slide out

• Feature-rich: Exterior water-bottle pockets, daypack, accessory pockets, zippered top pocket, laptop sleeve, compression straps, etc.

Ozone Convertible 50/22

Osprey Sojourn 45L/22″

osprey meridian travel bag

• Backpacker style: These bags give an appearance of being ready for rough road use and adventures into the great outdoors.

• Lighter:  8 lbs./3.62 kg

• Best comfort as backpack:  Ventilated, detachable back panel with hip and shoulder straps

• Backpacker-oriented features:  Excellent detachable ventilated suspension, zippered top pocket “straightjacket” compression straps, and external daisy chains for attaching additional gear

• No daypack included , but you can attach an Osprey Daylite Daypack

Sojourn 45/22

Why We (and Others) Mostly Love the Three Osprey Convertible Backpack Carry-Ons

On taking into account the test reports from American and various European consumer organizations, the experiences of travel bloggers, and our 20+ years of combined road experience, we’re pretty happy recommending Osprey as one of the top pack designers and for a few other things (like  toiletry bags ).

These Osprey Meridian, Ozone, and Sojourn carry-on bags share quite a number of common features. They are all well-regarded by critics, known for durability, and relatively light. Since these bags share so many design elements, they don’t look all that different from each other; the style differences are minor.
Osprey rolling packs are lightweight and feature-rich pieces for long-term travellers
Osprey is mainly known for high quality comfortable backpacker bags that carefully distribute their weight and can be worn for long periods, so it makes sense that these convertible bags would be much more than just square, unpadded wheeled luggage with straps tacked on as an afterthought. They are, rather, truly convertible pieces of luggage that work great whether rolling through a city or hiking to a hidden beach hideout. Osprey pieces are a delight to wear, carry, or roll.

They are also not as cheap as some of their competitors. If you only travel very occasionally and for short periods, you don’t need to go with Osprey and might consider our  cheaper wheeled backpack suggestion. There are also a few Ozone models listed at the end of this article that are a bit cheaper, but that are simple carry-ons and do not convert to backpacks.

Here we’re focused only on pieces that are small enough to work as carry-ons. As experienced travel snobs we’re entirely convinced that  it’s best to hit the road with a single carry-on , and nothing else, whether you’re heading out for days, weeks, or months.
Osprey has a reputation with backpackers for following through on its lifetime guarantee
Another important note for any of the bags discussed here: Osprey has a proven track record of backing up its All Mighty Guarantee (“any reason, any product, any era”). If something goes wrong they repair the piece for free, and if they can’t do that, they replace it. If this befalls you, contact their closest international customer service center for details.

Best for Travel Pros: Osprey Meridian 60L/22″

Osprey Meridian 60L/22″  is a sleek, fully featured wheeled carry-on that you can also pop on your back for short periods if needed. It is more for city travelers who are only going to occasionally use the detachable backpack straps for stairs, a rough bit of terrain, or quick bike ride. There is no hip belt, so this is not a wise choice for day-long treks in the woods.

This piece has very similar features to the Osprey Ozone Convertible 22″/50L. Both have attachable daybags with laptop sleeves and lots of other thoughtful little details that a serious traveler appreciates: accessory pockets, compression straps, a top quick-access pocket, and water-bottle pockets.

The Meridian is just a bit bulkier and heavier than the Ozone, and slightly more subdued and serious-looking. The Meridian also holds just a bit more, but this means that on some airlines you need to be careful not to overstuff it — particularly the attached daybag — so as not to run afoul of over-vigilant airline employees checking carry-on sizes. See here for more on what fits in the Osprey Meridian daypack .

Best for Light, Efficient Travel: Osprey Ozone Convertible 22″/50L

The Osprey Ozone Convertible 22″/50L is unfortunately now discontinued but sometimes available used (and a used Osprey piece is rarely a bad deal since they hold up so well). Be careful when looking to distinguish this convertible 50 from the other Osprey Ozone pieces, which are rolling luggage only and do not have backpack straps.

The Ozone Convertible 50L quite closely resembles its Meridian counterpoint; it’s main advantage is that it’s just a bit lighter and not quite as bulky, so you’re less likely to overstuff it and run into problems using it as a carry-on. It is also, unfortunately, a bit more likely to tip over when the daypack is attached and full of heavy stuff.

The Ozone Convertible 22″/50L can also look a bit sportier in its red version and “techy” with all its zippers and straps. Unlike the Sojourn, it has a dedicated laptop sleeve.

This piece is quite comfortable to wear on your back when needed for long stretches (in fact, I put the emptied bag on my back while writing this article at a standing desk to check something, and after twenty minutes realized that I had forgotten to take it off.) Like the Sojourn and unlike the Meridian, it has a hip belt, making it suitable for longer treks over bumpy roads. And, as with the other models here, it rolls well — the high chassis wheels are solidly built into the unit and give enough clearance to get you over rough terrain.

Best for Backpacker-Style Travel — but with Cheat-Wheels: The Osprey Sojourn 45L/22″

The Osprey Sojourn 45L/22″   is rather unique in that it combines the features of a top-notch backpackers’ pack with the great high-clearance wheels of the Ozone and Meridian lines — and it does all this in a carry-on.

That means maybe a bit of backpacker feature overkill for a small wheeled carry-on, but for those who need it mainly as a small, ultra-sturdy and comfortable backpack, it is certainly ideal. The back-panel suspension system is ventilated to keep you dry and everything about it is adjustable so that you can properly distribute your load. There are hip and sternum straps, and the whole suspension system is removable, for when you want to go with just wheels.

Just a bit of warning from the well-traveled: We think people tend to overestimate how much they’ll use backpack straps and underestimate how much they’ll love wheels. It’s lovely to pull a piece rather than have that parasitic hump stuck to your back.

But for those who most often find themselves far from smooth pavement — and would also like wheels for when they’re in more civilized territories — the Osprey Sojourn 45L/22″ is going to feel great.

The Sojourn lacks a laptop sleeve, so it’s not ideal for those who carry laptops or tablets, unless you also purchase an attachable daypack such as the Osprey Daylite , which is designed to hook onto the Sojourn. See here for more on separate Osprey daypack options .

Similar Osprey Carry-On Pieces to Consider

There are a few other Ozone carry-ons to consider. These are marketed without the term “convertible”; they do not convert into backpacks. They are simply lightweight but durable carry-ons.

Osprey Ozone 46L/22in

Note that on some airlines, for example many budget airlines in Europe, you cannot carry a personal item like a daypack in addition to your carry-on; you will thus be forced to check one of the two.

It is for this reason, plus the simplicity of being able to fully zip everything together into a single pack, that we recommend the Osprey Meridian and Osprey Ozone Convertible carry-ons instead of buying separate pieces. But if those things aren’t an issue for you, and you never need backpack straps, these options immediately above are excellent.

Osprey Luggage Reviews: The Meridian

Osprey Luggage Reviews: The Osprey Meridian

Hard core travelers rave about Osprey luggage. While I historically thought that any bag you have sitting around the house would work, I’ve been traveling so much and hearing that I was missing out that I decided to give the Osprey Meridian a shot.

osprey meridian travel bag

Osprey Luggage – The Meridian

osprey meridian travel bag

Osprey bags are tough.

This review comes after two years of use while traveling at least once a month. I put a lot of strain on the zippers and they haven’t budged from their tracks. No rips, no tears, wheels still roll smoothly etc. Aside from dirt, these Osprey bags operate like they are brand new.

Best Lightweight Backpack/Carry-on Functionality

The functionality is top notch. The airline overhead bin bag is perfectly sized, but what is really helpful is the Osprey laptop backpack (daypack) that can be clipped on the front. It is so convenient to be able to walk through the airport with it clipped to your overhead bin bag, only taking it off once you actually get to your seat.

Osprey Suitcase Storage Space

It is sized to be as big as possible while still being allowed to carry-on an airplane. This is a huge deal for me because I hate waiting for checked bags, especially when entering foreign countries. Being able walk off the plane with all of my stuff allows me to jump to the front of customs line.

Osprey’s Warranty

While I haven’t had to use this yet, they guarantee that they will fix any defect for any reason, free of charge. This applies whether you just bought the bag, or you bought it 10 years ago.

Only 2 – Osprey Wheeled Luggage

The wheels roll well, but if you compare a fixed two wheeled airplane carry-on to the free spinning four wheeled option available on many new suitcases, the Osprey bags lose. It doesn’t take turns as well in confined spaces, and simply isn’t as convenient.

Osprey Camping Bag vs Osprey Suitcase

If you are going on a long hike with the complete bag on your back, extra backpack straps can be pulled out of the back of the bag.  The problem is that when you carry a bag of this size, you probably want a waist cincher clip/hip belt. The Osprey Meridian doesn’t feature one, though previous versions of this bag supposedly did. It basically feels more like an ideal suitcase rather than a camping bag.

How much does an Osprey bag cost?

The lifetime warranty of the Osprey isn’t cheap, but most people justify the expense by long term use.

The Verdict

This would not be my 3-day hike and camping bag due to it being somewhat uncomfortable when the whole thing is on my back with no hip belt, but for my average international trip the utility of this bag can’t be beat.

Osprey Travel Backpack Sold Us

The ability to clip and remove the smaller Osprey laptop bag /daypack sold us on buying a second for our regular travels.

If that is what you are looking for, then I suggest investing!

If you’re considering wheeled backpacks, check out my Osprey Meridian review. Due to back problems I am no longer able to travel with my beloved Osprey Farpoint pack  and purchased the Osprey Meridian 22 as a replacement. They’re convertible rolling backpacks. In my two part review, I’ll show you why it did or didn’t work!

Why Osprey?

I live out of my luggage. I need a bag that can keep up with me and never let me down. I trust Osprey packs  for this job.

  • They make rugged bags with clean and simple styling.
  • They may be expensive, but they are tough and durable.
  • They also boast a lifetime warranty.

osprey-meridian-review

Farpoint 55

The Meridian 22 is my third Osprey bag. I started with the Aura 65 and then went carry on only with the Farpoint 55 (40 main pack plus 15 day pack). Although current carry-on restrictions may disqualify these on certain airlines I still travel with the 22 size to help me downsize my gear.

osprey-meridian-review

Why I don’t use a Regular Luggage Brand

  • Outdoor brands make bags that can handle the elements and endure abuse. A regular suitcase brand is generally too delicate for long term travel .
  • Plus, socially, backpackers and long term travelers frown at suitcases stereotyping them with tourists . Outdoor brands gets the approval from other nomads.

osprey-meridian-review

Why Meridian Wheeled Backpacks Rock

For me, the wheels on the Osprey Meridian wheeled backpacks are my favorite feature . They are tough and can handle being wheeled over gaping potholes, rocks, or sidewalks.

When I’m dragging this bag through the broken streets, gravel pathways, or thick grass I’m so appreciative of the hard core wheels. I can’t lift the bag easily so I push it to its limits wheeling it over anything you can think of and it never let’s me down.

Having a wheeled backpack was a lifesaver at Glastonbury when everyone else was suffering with immense weight on his or her backs. I just pulled my way though the mud, grass, and rough terrain.

osprey-meridian-review

Osprey Meridian in Rainforest Green

Durability is a feature consistent with all Osprey packs and Meridian wheeled backpacks do not disappoint . While I don’t like the fabric as much as the Farpoint I never having to worry about getting any rips or tears.

osprey-meridian-review

Another feature I like about the Meridian is the handle . I’ll never forget the pain of my friends suitcase handle breaking on our trip to Europe in 2007.

Because she had back problems at that time I was stuck hauling it around which was a nightmare. The Meridian has a sturdy (and nice looking) double handle that feels strong. I don’t have to worry about  snapping.

osprey-meridian-review

Finally, a bag that locks is essential . If it doesn’t have lockable zippers then I won’t even consider using it. Having theft deterrent luggage is a must whether their rolling backpacks or regular suitcases.

Are these Wheeled Backpacks TFG Approved?

Ultimately, the Meridian 22 wheeled backpacks gets top marks from me because they can handle my lifestyle and I don’t have to worry about my luggage breaking down. That’s the last thing you want to deal with on a trip. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post to find out the final result of my review and if I recommend this bag for your next trip.

The Osprey Meridian only has shoulder straps, no hip belt. The smaller Ozone DOES have a full harness, shoulder straps and a hip belt. The Meridian is made of tougher ballistic nylon, the day pack clips on/off, and holds 50 L. The smaller Ozone is made of thinner nylon, the day pack zips on/off in a U-shape, that is a bit more awkward to manueuver than the clips. The Ozone’s capacity is 45 L. No hip belt on the Meridian means ALL weight is carried on the shoulders. OK for a short period of time, on/off trains, stairs, short distances. 20-25 lb on the shoulders without a hip belt to better distribute the weight on one’s frame becomes quite uncomfortable if carried for any extended period (weight and personal body characteristics will impact length of time one can tolerate carrying the pack).

alex

Thank you for the tips Monica!

Nancy

I just read a review that it does have a hip belt.

carla

Where is the date on this review…? I looked more closely at this bag (on Amazon) and found that it doesn’t have straps. So why is it a “wheeled backpack”? It isn’t, it is a roller bag.

The straps are hidden in the back of the bag

Gear Review: Osprey Meridian 22 Inch/60L Pack

' src=

Finding the right bag for your trip can sometimes be a daunting task. Thankfully I’ve been through the pain of using every kind of luggage and have to say that this is one of my favorites.

This luggage is very versatile because it has the benefit of roller luggage and also a backpack. To be quite frank, I often used the roller part of the bag the most as it saves your back and also it’s just more convenient. The luggage also comes with a detachable backpack that is PERFECT for use as a day bag. If you’re walking on uneven ground or something that isn’t easy to use the wheels on, you can easily convert the luggage to a backpack that is easily managed.

  • LOVED the fact that it was an all-in-one luggage solution. Being able to wheel it, convert it to a backpack or even detach the smaller bag for a day bag made the Meridian a WONDER on the road.
  • It’s just the right size. The main thing is that I wanted a bag that I could carry-on the plane. Nothing is worst than checking in your bags. This bag handled it quite well, although there were times that it didn’t meet the weight limit. You will also need to detach the backpack from the main bag.
  • I found it a little strange that there is the ability to lock the back portion of the main bag (the section that holds the straps for the backpack) but there wasn’t any on the backpack portion. I was nervous to use the backpack as a day bag for short trips because it lacked any zippers with the holes to use a travel lock.
  • Backpack functionality was a bit oddly shaped. It wasn’t too long, but it was quite deep. I felt like a turtle.

Overall I’d definitely recommend this bag. It beats the traditional roller-only bag because it has the ability to convert to a backpack. It also has the ability to attach the day bag portion to the main bag. It is quite a durable bag and has a good amount of pockets in the right places.

Product Description

The Meridian 22 is moderately spacious, with 2,500 cubic inches of space in the main pack and an additional 1,200 cubic inches in the detachable daypack–an ideal accessory for short hikes and daytrips. Storage options include a large main compartment with straps to prevent clothing migration, a side mesh pocket, and a side fabric pocket for organization. The daypack, meanwhile, offers such options as a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to 15.4-inch screens, a full mesh pocket for further organization, side water bottle pockets, and top and back-panel entry. Additional features include a large panel zip that gives you access to the main pack without removing the daypack, a curved high-clearance base, and top and side carrying handles.

The main pack measures 14 by 22 by 9 inches (W x H x D)–the maximum legal size for airline carry-ons–while the daypack measures 10.5 by 19 by 5.6 inches. Together, the bags weigh 8 pounds 9 ounces and carry Osprey’s lifetime warranty.

The Osprey Meridian: The Complete Travel Package

I had a few luggage issues on my recent trip in Europe and found myself struggling to find a decent replacement as I dragged a suitcase with a broken wheel through the Balkans. Thankfully I reached out to Osprey in the UK and they were more than happy to arrange to have one of their amazing Meridian 75 suitcases sent to our hotel in Turkey . I’ve spent the last few months travelling with my Osprey Meridian 75 and can safely say that it is the best luggage I’ve ever had. Osprey’s mission is to create innovative high performance gear that reflects our love of adventure and our devotion to the outdoors, and their Meridian 75 ticks all the boxes and more!

Girl with Osprey Meridian 75 Luggage in Santorini

I haven’t always made the best choices when it has come to luggage for travelling. For my first few solo trips overseas as a teenager I took a hot pink suitcase, I then upgraded to an enormous backpack which saw me backpack through South East Asia, the US and South America. My backpacking days are now long behind me and whilst Dan insisted on travelling with a backpack for our recent Europe trip I bought myself a new suitcase which after a few months of being dragged around the cobblestoned streets of countless European cities saw me completely bust a wheel.

By this stage we had entered the Balkans and finding a good quality luggage store was an ordeal in itself. I reached out to Osprey in the UK in the hope that I could order and have a suitcase delivered to me. Finally luck was on my side and the staff at Osprey could not have been more helpful and arranged to have a Meridian 75 sent to our hotel in Turkey! It was a great day when my new bag arrived as I happily packed all my belongings into it and threw the suitcase with a busted wheel into the trash!

Osprey Meridian 75 Luggage Exterior

The Osprey Meridian is not only a stylish, great looking bag but also an incredibly practical luggage choice. It can be carried as a backpack and rolled like a suitcase and comes equipped with a removable 16L ventilated daypack, which is the perfect sized daypack. Whilst I mostly use my bag as a suitcase it is also very handy having the zipaway backpack harness which means I can easily turn the suitcase into a backpack if we’re travelling somewhere wheels can’t go! Unlike normal suitcases, the Meridian has a unique injection molded HighRoad™ chassis, consisting of an ABS polymer plastic for durability and using polyurethane wheels that as Osprey say, “eat tarmac for breakfast”! The wheels are high quality, sturdy and durable – perfect for cruising along the cobblestoned streets of Europe or dirt roads of Asia or South America.

Osprey have thought of everything with their Meridian, from their retractable ErgoGrip™ handle to their internal organisation options including a liquid pocket and dual mesh pockets to separate stinky, dirty clothes or shoes! As someone who works on the road, I also really appreciated the padded laptop sleeve and scratch-free zippered sunglasses and electronics pocket which is perfect for valuables and expensive electronics.

Osprey Meridian 75 Luggage Interior

The Meridian 75 retails for £240 and in all our travels I have not come across better luggage, whether suitcase or backpack for that price that is such high quality. I’ve tested my bag through a couple of countries, wheeled it along cobblestoned streets, dragged it onto ferries and it has flown halfway across the world and it is still in as good condition as when I first received it.

Osprey’s travel products are some of the highest quality ones on the market and are ones that both Dan and I highly recommend and endorse. Dan travelled around South East Asia, India, Australia and South America with the same Osprey backpack over a period of three years and the only reason he upgraded was because we needed bigger bags. We also use a number of Osprey accessories when we travel and I have a feeling that my suitcase will last a long time (and that we’ll also buy Dan one now as he is quite jealous of just how good mine is)!

If you’re interested in checking out Osprey’s range head over to the Osprey Website or if you’re interested in purchasing the same luggage as mine then check out the Meridian 75 – you won’t regret it!

Osprey Meridian 75

The Meridian 75 is intended to be the 'complete travel package' but did it roll with us? Find out in our review.

osprey meridian

Osprey is world renowned for it's backpacks but it also produces a great line of travel luggage including the Meridian 75 on test. The Meridian comes with a detachable backpack, a retractable handle and a multitude of organisation options.

The wheels that the Meridian roll along on are quite meaty and have a bit of a tread pattern to them, this helps on rough ground including light snow, but if you've ever been caught trying to drag your suitcase along ice and deep snow, then you'll be glad of the shoulder straps stowed in the back of the suitcase.

The rear compartment is accessed by zip and reveals the shoulder straps which attach with buckles to hidden clips along the bottom and top inner of the compartment, the bottom buckles only slot in one way, ensuring that the shoulder straps don't get twisted. Carrying the pack is surprisingly comfortable thanks to decent padding, but the length of the suitcase means the wheels can sometimes rub on the tops of the hips - not a problem for carrying short distances, which is what you're realistically going to use the shoulder straps for.

If you can't see a use for the shoulder straps at all then you can completely unclip them and leave them at home to gain valuable extra space in the rear compartment.

Around the front of the suitcase the backpack detaches from partially hidden buckles, this maintains the clean lines of the Meridian. The buckles that hold the pack on clip into each other after removal, making everything nice and neat again.

The pack has more features than we would have expected. Inside you'll find a padded laptop sleeve complete with buckle closure and a separate zipped tablet sleeve. Outside the pack there's a non-scratch sunglasses/goggles pocket. Around the back you'll find Osprey's Airspeed mesh backpanel as well as a sternum strap with whistle at the front. This pack is clearly intended to be used, and not just as carry on luggage. It's perfect for low intensity day trips and cruising the pistes just bear in mind that without a hip belt the pack will eventually start to move around.

On the suitcase itself there's a large U-shaped two way zipped opening into the main compartment, you can open this right up which gives you great access to the gear and luggage inside. There are four further compartments along the inside sides and under the clamshell opening. Three of these are mesh so we use them to separate out dirty clothes and shoes. There's a further large compartment accessed from outside the suitcase, this is an ideal place to store your washbag, it's also compatible with the Osprey Wash Bag Cassette.

The external sides of the Meridian are reinforced and are reasonably sturdy, although not a hard case it's robust enough to protect the gear inside.

The carry handles on the top and side have chunky cushioning for comfortable lifting of heavy loads and the telescopic pull along handle is also very comfortable to use.

The wheels roll along the airport concourse quite nicely indeed and the bag feels like it can take a knock or two from over zealous baggage handlers.

All this greatness comes at a cost, £270 to be exact but the Meridian 75 is the sort of suitcase that will safely carry our gear for many miles and smiles to come......and then get passed on to our children/grandchildren years down the line so the cost is well justified in our eyes.

  7. Osprey Packs Meridian 60L 22″ Wheeled Carry On Review

The Meridian is 22", which is the max size allowed for a carry-on bag. The bag itself, empty, is about 8 lbs, so be careful with weight. 8. The Osprey Meridian 60 vs. Ozone Convertible 50 vs ...

Best for Travel Pros: Osprey Meridian 60L/22″ Osprey Meridian 60L/22″ is a sleek, fully featured wheeled carry-on that you can also pop on your back for short periods if needed. It is more for city travelers who are only going to occasionally use the detachable backpack straps for stairs, a rough bit of terrain, or quick bike ride.

  9. Osprey Luggage Reviews: The Meridian

Only 2 - Osprey Wheeled Luggage. The wheels roll well, but if you compare a fixed two wheeled airplane carry-on to the free spinning four wheeled option available on many new suitcases, the Osprey bags lose. It doesn't take turns as well in confined spaces, and simply isn't as convenient.

Our Review: Osprey Meridian 60L. 7.3/10. Overall, we love the ruggedness of the Osprey Meridian bag. 16. Bag review: Osprey Meridian 60L (convertible rolling backpack)

I don't necessarily view this as convertible luggage so much as a very ergonomic rolling suitcase with easy access.
