Recommendations

We pride ourselves in providing an excellent boating service on the islands.

Thank you so much for our trip yesterday, we saw everything we wanted to and more. You are very knowledgable and it was great to hear you talk so passionately about this beautiful area. Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to do a wildlife boat trip also dog friendly!

Dave is very knowledgeable about the Islands and the wild life, has a great sense of humour and made our family day out last year one the grandchildren want to repeat this year. highly recommended for any visitors.

Dave, was great, very knowledgeable and because there were only 11 of us on the boat, a great experience. We saw everything we were hoping to see, loads of puffins, gannets, razorbills, guillemots, seals etc. best wildlife life tour we have ever been on in the Isles of Scilly and we have been coming for over 18 years. Wish we had found Dave earlier but then he probably wouldn’t have been old enough to take us out.

Discover the beautiful gardens and wildlife of the Isles of Scilly

tour isles of scilly

The Isles of Scilly are loved for their spectacular scenery, lush botanic gardens and white-sand beaches.

On this six-day trip you'll find out why the Isles of Scilly are considered one of the UK's most beautiful locations. You'll visit several of the islands' most intriguing locations, including the rugged coastlines of Bryher, the quaint harbours of St Martin's, and unspoilt waters off the coast of St Agnes, where wildlife abounds.

A true highlight of your trip will be a visit to the exceptional sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden, which is often described as 'Kew without the glass', where you'll witness some 2,000 specimens from across the southern hemisphere flourishing around the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey.

You'll learn more about these colourful gardens at a special dinner with the garden's curator, Mike Nelhams, who'll give an exclusive talk about his work preserving the vast array of plants found here.

There's a wide range of wonderful wildlife to be spotted on the Isles of Scilly, with many species that can't be seen anywhere else in the UK. You'll be able to spot some of these on a wildlife cruise from St Agnes, where you will look out for puffins, Manx shearwaters and guillemots, whilst also hoping for dolphins, porpoises and sunfish.

13 July 2024 and 18 July 2025 departures: You'll be based at the stylish and comfortable hotel The Atlantic on St Mary's, which will serve as your base for the trip. Here you will enjoy delicious cuisine made with local, seasonal ingredients, as well as truly stunning views across the harbour.

22 July 2024 departure: You'll be based at cosy Tregarthen's Hotel right on the water's edge on St Mary's, which will serve as your base for the trip. You'll be able to gaze out to sea as you dine in the restaurant, lounge or terrace.

September 2024, August and September 2025 departures: You'll be based at the Star Castle Hotel on St Mary's. This historic hotel dates back to 1593 and has a heated indoor swimming pool and peaceful, secluded gardens. You might even get to sample seafood caught by the owner from the hotel's boat.

Please note this is a busy and full itinerary, so a good degree of mobility and fitness is required to get the most out of this trip, which involves lots of walking and getting in and out of boats.

Isles of Scilly

Today you'll arrive at Penzance and meet your tour group at the departure terminal for the Scillonian ferry. Here you'll meet your expert tour manager who will greet you and assist you with check-in.

Once you arrive on St Mary's you'll make your way to The Atlantic in Hugh Town (13 July 2024 departure), Tregarthen's (22 July 2024 departure) or Star Castle (September 2024 departures) and begin to explore your surroundings. In the evening you'll have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Abbey Gardens Tresco

After breakfast you'll meet your tour manager and your guide for the day. You'll make your way to the jetty and take the boat transfer to Tresco where you'll visit the world famous Tresco Abbey Garden, home to a collection of some 20,000 plants from 80 countries.

The garden was established in the 19th century around the ruins of an old Benedictine Abbey and is now home to a fantastic variety of plants from all over the world, including Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa. The garden changes throughout the year as different species thrive. In spring, flowers bloom here weeks before they do on the mainland thanks to the Tresco's special sub-tropical climate. You'll have time for lunch (not included) in Tresco before heading back to St Mary's.

Puffins, Scilly Isles

This morning, following another hearty breakfast, you'll make your way to the jetty and hop on the ferry transfer to St Agnes, where you'll take a guided walk around the island's coastline.

There's plenty to see along St Agnes' coast, from rocky outcrops on its exposed west side to paradise beaches in its sheltered coves. There's a sandbar that links St Agnes with the tiny neighbouring island of Gugh, where you'll find white sand and crystal-clear water.

You'll tuck into lunch at a local pub before taking a fascinating marine wildlife cruise, where you have a chance to spot some of the special animals and birds who call the Scillies home.

Old town beach Red Valerian, St Mary's

Today you'll be exploring the lovely isle of St Martin's where you'll discover the island's ruggedly beautiful shoreline. Little St Martin's is just two miles long, but boasts some of the finest beaches in the British Isles.

Lunch at a local spot is included, and afterwards you'll pay a visit to St Martin's Vineyard, a unique coastal vineyard and winery which is working towards organic production of white, red and rose wines.

Path to Rushy Bay beach in Bryher

Today you'll take the boat to beautiful Bryher where lunch has been arranged at the luxury Hell Bay Hotel. Bryher is an island of exciting contrasts. On one side you have the roaring Atlantic ocean and a rugged coastline, while on the other side you'll find tranquil waters and powder-soft beaches.

Hell Bay is on the Atlantic side, and from here you can watch as dramatic waves thunder into the bay. The restaurant at Hell Bay Hotel is one of the best rated in the Isles of Scilly. You'll tuck into award-winning dishes at the hotel bar which use the finest ingredients from the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall and the wider West Country.

Sunset, Scilly Isles

After your final breakfast at your hotel, you'll enjoy some free time on St Mary's before taking the Scillonian ferry back to Penzance.

The Atlantic provides a superb base, right in the hub of the island. It's great to step out onto the paved streets at the centre of Hugh Town, minutes from the water's edge.

Hugh Street is home to shopping, restaurants and bars in the centre of St Mary's. Town beach is only a couple of minutes' walk away. By plane: Skybus flights to St Mary's from Newquay (30 minutes), Exeter (1 hour) or Lands End (15 minutes). The hotel is a 5-minute drive from the airport. By boat: the Scillionian III Passenger Ferry departs from Penzance (2 hours 45 minutes). The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the terminal.

Cromwell's Castle, Isles of Scilly

All our carefully-curated itineraries are designed by our experts. While we make every effort to adhere to the described itinerary, we may take alternative routes or adapt the running order for weather and/or operational reasons.

Your leader will be at reception at 18:30 to meet the group and for a quick introduction to the holiday before dinner.

The daily itinerary has to be very flexible as our itinerary, like life on Scilly, is determined by weather and tide. We have provided you an outline of the selection of walks on each of the islands which could be included in the itinerary. There are lots of things to see on each island, so some of the walks are not as lengthy as others. The holiday runs at a relaxing pace so that you get a real flavour of island life.

This is the second largest of the islands. Tresco and its garden are world-renowned and attract many visitors each year. We will see white sand beaches and a panorama of islands from the coastal path and explore the north of the island with its wild heathland, rocky coastlines and 16 th  and 17 th  century castles. There will be the chance to visit the Abbey Garden and to explore this collection of sub-tropical plants, and also to see the Valhalla museum – housing figureheads salvaged from shipwrecks from around the islands’ shores.

6 miles (9.5km) with 550ft (160m) of ascent.

Surrounded by rocks and reefs, St Agnes is the most south-westerly community in the UK, where the whitewashed lighthouse and traditional stone cottages tumble down to tiny bulb fields, and pocket sized farms. Our circular walk will take us past the old lifeboat station, Troytown Maze, a labyrinth laid out in beach pebbles, and the granite outcrop of the Nag’s Head. From the coastal path we will have impressive views of the treacherous Western Rocks and the famous Bishop Rock lighthouse. A visit to Gugh (pronounced like the name Hugh, but with a G) is determined by the tide. This small island is home to a bounty of archaeological sites.

5 miles (8km) with 500ft (150m) of ascent.

Though the third largest of the islands, St Martin’s is a narrow island only 2 miles long. Easily recognisable from its fine shimmering white sandy beaches, the shores of St Martin’s have the longest stretches of sand in Scilly. Following the coastal path takes us past kelp pits, through scented gorse heathlands, to stone and rope labyrinths. We follow the sandy shore of Little Bay and Great Bay, before turning inland to the flower fields and glasshouses of Higher Town. We also head over the golden gorse heathland of Chapel Down to St Martin’s Head with its chapel, Daymark and ruined Signal Station.

6½ miles (10.5km) with 550ft (170m) of ascent.

Our walk circumnavigates the Islands’ hub of St Mary’s, starting out from our base in Hugh Town. We explore the coastline, passing by the archaeological sites of Bant’s Carn and Innisidgen, the granite tors of Porth Hellick and Peninnis Head, and the one and only set of traffic lights on the islands, at the airport! Before returning to Hugh Town, the coastal path brings us to Old Town– a favourite haunt and now the resting place of the former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

10 miles (16km) with 900ft (280m) of ascent.

Isles of Scilly - AdobeStock_8898189.jpeg

Bryher is wild, windswept and unkempt, and has a very individual feel to it. Fewer than 100 people live here. There is only one road, and the locals quote the definition of a traffic jam as being “when two tractors meet”! The island has a magnificent variety of scenery, from the wild and rugged Hell Bay in the north, to the peaceful bays and secluded beaches of the south. Our walk will take us across heather moorland, past prehistoric cairns and boulder walls and along sandy coastal paths to see these different sides of Bryher.

5 miles (8km) with 600ft (180m) of ascent.

Isles of Scilly Holidays - Small Group Guided Tours

Our Isles of Scilly holidays include a packed itinerary of daily excursions. Enjoy guided walks and talks with local experts and plenty of island-hopping.

  • Enjoy the Isles of Scilly at your pace with a small group, plenty of flexibility and experiences to suit all weathers such as guided walks, cycling, birdwatching, vineyard tours, star gazing and, for the August tour, a special focus on Scilly's fascinating geology and mineral treasures.
  • Enjoy top-quality accommodation on the main inhabited Island, St Mary’s, staying at the historic Star Castle Hotel built in 1593 and converted to a hotel in 1933.
  • Hear tales of maritime bravery and famous shipwrecks from one of Britain leading shipwreck experts
  • Enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the Dungeon Bar and dine every evening in the award-winning restaurant in the former Officers’ Mess.
  • Explore two or three of the four inhabited ‘off-islands’ with short trips by passenger boats accompanied by a local guide.
  • Visit an uninhabited island to see seabirds and evidence of historical settlements (weather dependent).
  • Meet local experts, entrepreneurs, and generations of Scillonians during your Scilly Isles holiday. Find out why they love living on Scilly.

Join our small group on a journey around the picturesque Isles of Scilly, a subtropical sanctuary off the Cornish coast that holds its fair share of stories from times gone by.

We’re delighted to have secured accommodation for all our tours at the Star Castle Hotel. It is steeped in history – a complete example of an Elizabethan fort, built in 1593, in response to the threat following the Spanish Armada in 1588. Later, during the English Civil War, it was the final Royalist stronghold and refuge for the future King Charles II in 1646. With its modern extensions, it is a most comfortable and welcoming hotel.

Spend six days of your Scilly holiday exploring everything that the islands have to offer, from a vibrant garden hiding a monastery to discovering the sites where ancient ancestors laid their heroes to rest. History soaks the islands through, and you’ll learn how the tranquil Isles have weathered natural and manmade tempests over the years.

Your expert local guides and guest speakers will help you make the most of this island paradise, showing you which wildlife to watch out for and helping to unpick the history behind some of the most striking landmarks, and ‘read the rocks’ of Scilly and uncover their fascinating 300million year old story. With pre-dinner talks on the islands’ rich maritime history and scattered shipwrecks, along with the rich tapestry of early settlers who called Scilly home, you’ll sink into island life and get that much more out of exploring the islands.

Scilly isn’t just a feast for the eyes, however – throughout this Isles of Scilly holiday, you can savour freshly caught fish, award-winning appetisers and simple good food at pubs, restaurants, bars and chippies tucked away across the islands.

Please note: Travel to or from the Isles of Scilly can be weather dependent and is prone to disruption, so please bear this in mind when booking on this tour and ideally allow for a little flexibility, especially at the end of the tour.

  • Activity Level: Easy, with optional longer walks ( view activity level definitions ). Access to islands off St Mary’s will require climbing onto and off of passenger boats, and if visiting uninhabited islands you may need to disembark in the shallows.
  • Transport: Getting there: The Isles of Scilly can be reached by plane from airports in Cornwall and Devon; by helicopter from Penzance Heliport, or by ship from Penzance Harbour. Getting around: Primarily on foot, with passenger boats between the islands.
  • Accommodation:   Five nights in the Star Castle Hotel on St Mary’s, a former artillery fort where the customers come first.
  • Weather: The Isles of Scilly benefit from a subtropical climate, meaning mild conditions and an average temperature ranging from 8 °C to 17 °C across the year. These conditions favour the islands’ flower growers, who typically harvest and export narcissi from October through to March, when the mainland can be facing subzero temperatures. Rain is a possibility so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothing, but any poor weather often passes quickly on the islands.

Day 1 – Arrival and Meeting on St Mary’s

Star Castle and Gardens

Check into your hotel and meet your fellow travellers.

After arriving on St Mary’s, you’ll be collected at the quay or airport and transported with your luggage to your castle for the week, the Star Castle Hotel on the east end of the island. Peer over the parapets, chat to the locals and get settled in, then enjoy the first group dinner of your Isles of Scilly holiday in the castle’s award-winning restaurant.

Days 2-5 – Exploring the Islands

Tresco and Bryher

Enjoy the islands at your pace, with flexible schedules and semi-guided tours.

Island life runs at a slower pace than on the mainland, and our itinerary reflects this. The weather also plays a part, so we will adapt the itineraries to suit the weather and tides, taking into account the special requests of the group. Whatever the conditions, there will always be plenty to catch your attention during your stay on Scilly. During this tour, some or all of the following will be included, depending on the time of year:

  • A guided walk of the Garrison Walls, excellently preserved defensive measures located right outside the Star Castle Hotel on St Mary’s.
  • A walking tour of the islands’ ancient ruins and enlightening artifacts that are changing our understanding of island life, through curated exhibitions on each of the inhabited islands.
  • (August tour only) An exploration of the fascinating geology of Scilly, from granite foundations to being shaped by glaciers, and looking at how sea level changes have shaped the landscape and history. Ideal for multi-generation families and young explorers!
  • A trip to St Martin’s to include a visit to its very own vineyard, complete with tasting.
  • Weather-permitting, an evening visit to St Martin’s observatory to search the stars and see Luke Jerram’s Luna sculpture. The Isles of Scilly are officially England’s ‘darkest district’, providing optimal conditions for viewing the wonders of the universe.
  • After-breakfast and pre-dinner talks about the islands from local experts, covering topics including shipwrecks, the diverse birdlife and the mammoth task of bringing lifesaving lighthouses to the islands.
  • Enjoying delicious meals across the islands, including the catch of the day, freshly baked bread, and local seafood.
  • Spending a half-day on Samson to see evidence of settlements from 5,000 years ago up until the last settlers left in 1855. This is an uninhabited island, reached by a paddle through the shallows – guaranteed to get your feet wet!
  • A scenic walk around Tresco Abbey Gardens, where tropical conditions support an abundance of exotic flora. Topped off with a cream tea and a visit to the island’s impressive figurehead collection, and perhaps a sighting of the local red squirrels.
  • Explore the English Civil War history still visible on Tresco, and hear about the struggle to wrest control of the islands.
  • A visit to Bryher to learn about a key Bronze Age burial discovery, stop in at the Hell Bay Hotel and enjoy the Pender family’s mouth-watering fresh fish and seafood at their café. Bryher also boasts a small but impressive gallery, full of art, photography and ceramics from local creators.
  • Head to St Agnes to explore a miniature maritime maze, see the island’s shipwreck exhibition and spend time in Britain’s most south-westerly pub. St Agnes has the only dairy farm on Scilly, providing delicious ice cream to passers-by.
  • Take a boat trip beyond the main islands to see the puffin colonies, bobbing seals, and playful dolphins.
  • Witness sea life beneath your feet with a unique glass-bottomed boat trip.
  • Head out at dusk to meet up with the islands’ bat group and learn about find out more about the local and visiting bats that call Scilly home.
  • Time to catch up with fellow guests and share stories of your very own Scilly experience.

Our tours are designed to suit you, so there will also be plenty of free time to pop into galleries, head out on an adventure of your own or simply sit and enjoy the amazing views.

No single supplement for April

Activity Level and Terrain

Island Hopping

The activity level is rated as EASY ( view activity level definitions ) and is suitable for occasional walkers, with walks ranging from between 1-3 miles on paved roads, coastal paths and sandy beaches. This tour does involve climbing into and out of passenger boats to reach other islands, along with descending and ascending stone steps on quays. Additionally, the very short approach road to walk up to the Star Castle Hotel is steep, but it only takes about five minutes if coming up from the harbour or the town. You will never need to do this walk with your luggage on your Scilly holiday, as the hotel team take care of that!

If travelling to an uninhabited island, you may need to disembark in the shallows and walk to shore, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is essential. Rain is always possible, and participants should be prepared with warm and waterproof clothing. The climate on the Scillies is mild, with average temperatures ranging from 8°C to 17°C over the course of the year.

Transport will be by licensed passenger boats between the islands, and primarily on foot the rest of the time.

Bicycles are available to hire on Tresco; and bike and electric buggy hire is available on St Mary’s.

If walking is an issue, alternative arrangements can be made during the scheduled longer walks, so please let GeoCultura know in advance. To enjoy the full experience, a good level of fitness is required – please call us to discuss this if you have any concerns.

Dr Vickie Heaney

Dr Vickie Heaney

Dr Vickie Heaney’s background is in zoology with a PHD specialisation in seabirds, and the Isles of Scilly provide plenty of birdlife for her to study and conserve.

As a Seabird Ecologist with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, Vickie’s work includes monitoring the Isles’ avian visitors, and improving conditions through initiatives like the Seabird Recovery Project. Among other outcomes, this has been credited with bringing successful breeding populations of Manx Shearwaters and Storm Petrels back to Scilly.

Vickie’s other passion is printmaking, and from her studio on St Mary’s she creates limited runs of linocut prints inspired by seabirds, nautical themes and island life, together with hand decorated ceramics with striking designs.

With Jess Vian, Vickie runs Isles of Scilly Tours. During the winter months, her ornithology expertise takes her to the far south, helping to engage expedition cruise ships passengers about wildlife in places like the Falklands Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica.

Like many, Jess caught the Isles of Scilly bug from a young age after visiting the islands on holiday. After moving to the islands to work the 2001 summer season, Jess has never looked back. Throwing herself into island life, she has held an impressive number of roles over the years, working in the agricultural, tourism and transport industries.

Jess has a particular interest in the history of Scilly, with a specialisation in the lighthouses that dot the coastline and surrounding islands. Additionally, she has previously chaired the Isles of Scilly Museum Association and continues to support the organisation, as both a Trustee and the current Vice Chair.

Alongside Dr Vickie Heaney, Jess runs Isles of Scilly Tours, helping to guide visitors across and around the islands. Outside of guiding, Jess manages her smallholding of goats, chickens and ducks, and runs a small business making soap from goats’ milk.

Richard Larn OBE, Cornish Bard and Knight of Mark Twain

Richard has had a storied history in the Royal Navy, having served for 27 years in a variety of significant roles. After teaching himself to dive in 1947 in the River Thames, his passion for exploring shipwrecks took off, and since then Richard has dived all over the world and on hundreds of wreck sites.

Richard’s career highlights include discovering and investigating the wreck of HMS Association off the coast of the Isles of Scilly, and using his ingenuity to help raise the Mary Rose in 1982, a feat which earned him a personal letter of thanks from the then-Prince Charles.

Other notable moments include Richard being awarded an OBE for his work in cataloguing UK shipwrecks through the National Maritime Record, and discovering the wreck of the Admiral Gardner which yielded millions of copper coins.

Richard has written over 60 books on the subject of shipwrecks, including nine about the Isles of Scilly, and will be talking about his adventures, British naval history and a number of key Scilly shipwrecks.

In a breath-taking location atop 200-foot granite cliffs affording superb views to Scilly and beyond, guests are encouraged to wander along the coastline and to wallow in the natural drama of this unique landscape.

Day Two – Take Flight To The Isles of Scilly

After early breakfast, its off to tiny Land’s End Airport, for the short flight across the Atlantic to the isle of St Mary’s, the ‘main’ isle of Scilly. Then on to your hotel in Hugh Town, the island capital.

Drop luggage at your hotel and meet up with a friendly local guide, setting off on a gentle guided stroll through Hugh Town and a little of wider St Mary’s. You’ll learn about the fascinating history of this place, a little more than six square miles in size, from Neolithic to Roman, to its centuries of strategic maritime importance.

In the afternoon, take time to yourself, perhaps with lunch at one of several fine cafes or pubs, and a dawdle towards Porthmellon or Porthcressa.

Your Accommodation on St Mary’s

Your base for five full nights here in Hugh Town, your hotel is a remarkable property, long-established in the 16th -century castle on the Garrison that overlooks the island. You’ll enjoy a stay in one of the hotel’s spacious country cottage-style bedrooms within four acres of beautifully tended gardens, with breakfast served in the light-filled, vine-adorned conservatory restaurant. Each morning, the hotel’s boatman visits to discuss interisland travel plans, giving a real flavour of how life proceeds here. Guests are invited to make full use of the heated indoor pool, tennis court and  complimentary golf, while the in-house restaurant serves an award-winning menu, often featuring lobster and crab, personally caught by the proprietor aboard the hotel’s own fishing boat.

Day Three – An Easy Morning And Tasty Afternoon

Take a leisurely approach to the start of today, maybe at the pool, strolling the garden, or delving deeper into the history of your castle hotel. Later, alongside your tour leader, make your way northeast to Scilly’s only winery to enjoy a tour and tasting. Your host established the vineyard and winery here over a decade ago, with some 7000 Vines planted in 2009 – 60 % Pinot Noir, 30 % Chardonnay and 10 % Pinot Gris. The winery also features the Story of Wine Exhibition which tells the story of the Vineyard, the process of English winemaking, wine tasting and much more. Tour over, make the short trip back to your hotel for a delicious lobster lunch, followed by an evening at leisure.

Day Four – Across The Water To The Isle of Tresco

Today you embark on the first of three inter-island trips during your holiday. After breakfast, meet your friendly local guide and, along with your tour leader, allow the local boatman to take you across the water to the idyllic island of Tresco. This second-largest of the isles of Scilly is family-owned and carefully curated, a subtropical ‘pocket-sized paradise’, an island of golden beaches, dramatic rocky outcrops, bronze age burial sites and romantic castle ruins. You’ll enjoy a guided walk around the island’s highlights, followed by lunch at a beachside cafe at leisure. Later, visit staggering Abbey Gardens, where you’ll have plenty of time to stroll its terraces featuring some 20,000 exotic plants from across the globe and the dramatic Valhalla collection of figureheads salvaged from the islands’ shipwrecks. Returning to St Mary’s in late afternoon, take the evening to yourself either at your hotel or in Hugh Town.

Day Five – Bryher, An Isle Of Contrasts

Another interisland adventure awaits today, as you make the brief crossing from St Mary’s to one of the smallest of Scilly’s inhabited islands. Both rugged and beautiful, constantly at the relentless mercy of the broiling Atlantic on one side, yet serene and peaceful on the other, Bryher wears its contrasts with pride. Its 80 lucky souls enjoy a slice of untamed Scilly amidst rocky coves, pristine beaches and gentle granite hills. Alongside your tour leader and a local guide, you’ll explore the very best of this island today, perhaps admiring the stacks of Shipman Head – up close for the intrepid – watch the Atlantic rollers thunder into Hell Bay and drink in  the calm and tranquility of Rushy Bay overlooking the island of Samson. You’ll take lunch at leisure today, returning to St Mary’s in the afternoon for an evening’s relaxation.

Day Six – St Mary’s at Leisure and a Farewell Dinner on St Agnes

The gentlest of final days’ holiday today. Take the morning and early afternoon at leisure, making use of your hotel’s facilities, strolling the beaches of Hugh Town or indulging in a little souvenir shopping. In the afternoon, accompanied by your tour leader, board a local boat for your last interisland trip, this time to flawless St Agnes. The outlier of the Isles of Scilly, and therefore England’s southwestern frontier, St. Agnes is totally unspoilt and astonishingly peaceful. Measuring a little over a mile across, its closest neighbour is Gugh, to which it is joined by a sandbar at low tide. Similar to Bryher, the island feels the force of the Atlantic ocean on one side, while enjoying a Zen-like calm on the other. Take in the circular maze of rounded beach stones and the stone stacks and cairns at Wingletang Down. Periglis Beach lays out its shimmering sandy carpet at your feet and affords superb views across to  Annet, the Western Rocks and out to Bishop Rock. Should you make it to Gugh, introduce yourself to the Old Man of Gugh, standing three metres tall and believed to have been erected in the Bronze Age.

While here, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travellers at the UK’s southwesternmost pub, before the return boat trip to St Mary’s.

Day Seven – Onward Journey Home

A last early breakfast today, before you’re whisked back to St Mary’s airport for your return flight to Land’s End. Your tour leader will get you safely to Penzance, where you bid your new friends farewell and continue your onward journey home.

Isles of Scilly

An 8-day birdwatching holiday to the relaxing and beautiful Isles of Scilly.

Quick Enquiry

Quick enquiry.

The fabulous Isles of Scilly lie just a short distance from the south-west tip of Cornwall yet seem a world away from the mainland. Renowned as a staging post for migrant birds, the archipelago also boasts a fine selection of resident seabirds, is home to many Grey Seals, and supports a huge diversity of tropical flora flourishing in the almost frost-free environment. This wildlife holiday concentrates on the birdlife and natural history of the Scilly Isles, visiting the inhabited islands of St. Agnes, St. Martin's, Tresco and Bryher from a comfortable guesthouse base on the largest island, St. Mary's. Our holiday departures in both spring and autumn guarantee some of the finest coastal scenery in Europe, numerous boat trips and superb natural history walks.

  • Scenic boat journey from Penzance along Cornish coast
  • Enjoy Scilly’s white sandy beaches, turquoise seas & amazing granite forms
  • Exciting birdwatching includes residents, migrants & regular rarities
  • Grey Seals & seabird colonies (in spring)
  • Plenty of inter-island boat trips
  • Comfortable guesthouse accommodation
  • A chance to observe the unique Scillonian way of life
  • An extraordinary flora includes many species rarely seen on mainland
  • Natural history walks, each day exploring a new area or island

Grade A/B. This tour consists of day walks only (all of which are optional), of between two and ten miles per day, but this will be at a slow birdwatching pace and does not entail any steep climbs.

Travel between islands is by boat, so you must be comfortable in stepping on and off the tenders.

The fabulous Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles from Land's End, easily visible from the mainland on a clear day, and yet all the stresses of daily life seem to vanish within hours of reaching the islands. They are a supremely relaxing place to spend a holiday with decision making reduced to choosing which island to visit or which cafe to patronise.

The Scillonian population of approximately 2,000 is mostly concentrated on the largest island St. Mary's but small communities are also found on Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher and St. Agnes. Flower farming is still a major source of income for the islanders but decreasing in importance as the traditional advantage of being able to supply early spring flowers to the market is negated by the mass import of blooms by air from places like Israel. As the flower industry diminishes, tourism is booming and the very high level of repeat bookings from one year to the next is evidence that few visitors are ever disappointed! It might even be advisable to issue a warning to all first time visitors stating that the islands are highly addictive and likely to feature in your holiday plans for many years in the future!

A passenger ferry, Scillonian III, sails from Penzance to St. Mary's each morning Monday-Saturday, returning later in the day. The cruise provides superb views of the West Cornwall coast from Newlyn to Land's End. It should be stated however that the stretch of sea between the islands and the mainland is where Atlantic swells meet the currents of the English Channel and the resulting turbulence can make the cruise an uncomfortable experience for poor sailors, particularly after recent gales. Fortunately, alternatives exist with a regular helicopter service from Penzance and the fixed wing Skybus flights from St. Just near Land's End. Both these options are more expensive than the boat but the journey time is reduced to 20 minutes. Limited Skybus services also operate from Exeter and Newquay. The holiday price is calculated on the basis of travelling by sea but we will gladly book air travel from St.Just or Penzance at a supplementary cost (fares are subject to annual increases - we charge the difference between Scillonian III fare and the relevant air carrier).

Like most island groups, the Scillies have relatively few resident birds and the selection of nesting passerines is generally unremarkable, although an abundance of confiding Song Thrushes is an exception to their national decline and some familiar mainland birds such as Dunnock and Blackbird exhibit a few island differences in the brightness of their plumage or in the case of the latter, tone of bill colour. The colonies of seabirds around the archipelago are, however, of national importance and include Shag, Storm Petrel, Manx Shearwater, Puffin and Kittiwake. At times of spring and autumn migration Scilly is host to an astonishing diversity of birds seeking temporary rest and food on the islands. Few of these travellers make landfall intentionally but like the Shetlands in the north, Scilly appears to be in exactly the right place to provide succour for disoriented migrants carried over the ocean by unfriendly weather systems. The global movements of migrant birds are still imperfectly understood but it exercises the imagination to understand how individuals from North America, Siberia and Southern Europe can arrive on Scilly in the same week as so often seems to happen in the autumn! In the spring the rarities tend to be of Mediterranean origin such as Bee-Eaters, Golden Orioles or rare herons but even then surprises are frequent and recent occurrences at this season have included Terek Sandpiper, Tree Swallow and Calandra Lark! The regular arrival of unexpected vagrants has boosted the Scilly bird list to nearly 400 species, an astonishing total considering the size of the islands and the paucity of resident birds.

Although the focus of this tour will be birds, Scilly can boast many other natural history attractions for visitors. The flora is of great interest and includes many rare species which flourish in the largely frost free climate. Because of these mild conditions it has been possible to fill the famous Abbey Gardens on Tresco with delicate exotic plants from all over the world creating a collection that could not survive in colder climes. The White-toothed or Scilly Shrew is found nowhere else in Britain and whilst mainland mammals such as Fox and Badger are absent from the islands, the population of Grey or Atlantic Seals is of international significance. Migrant moths and butterflies visit Scilly in much the same way that birds do and a period of light southerly winds can often bring scores of Clouded Yellow butterflies or Hummingbird Hawk Moths to the islands. Much rarer vagrants also occur and the same fast-moving Atlantic fronts which deposit Neotropical landbirds on Scilly can also carry over spectacular Monarch butterflies.

The itinerary for our our tour will be completely flexible to allow for weather conditions and local reports. There will be a reasonable amount of walking each day but this will be at birdwatching pace and punctuated by regular stops. Included in the tour price are four full day visits to 'off-islands' which will entail catching the 1015 tripper launch from St. Mary's returning 1600-1700. These vessels carry about 70 passengers and fully conform to EC safety regulations. The journey time from St. Mary's is about 20-25 minutes.

The whole holiday was a highlight! Enjoyed walking around the beautiful islands and spotting lots of birds. Rob Mileto was outstandingly - not only was he very knowledgeable about all the local wildlife, but such a lovely trip leader. C.C. Shropshire, Apr 24
Rob as tour leader, both hard knowledge and soft people skills, enthusiasm, relaxed and laidback creating an excellent ambience thus affecting the group. Excellent. T.C. West Midlands, May 24
Adrian was the perfect tour leader - knowledgeable , kind, happy to answer all our questions, organised all the boat trips and meal stops efficiently. Lovely boat trips to each island and steady walking - wonderful to learn more about our native and visiting exotic birds. Schooners hotel was truly wonderful with sea view rooms, comfortable beds and excellent meals. L.D. Hampshire, Apr 24
We loved not being in a vehicle at any point on this holiday. As a result the whole group took plenty of exercise, and coupled with an excellent leader and the lovely boat trips to surrounding islands made this a wonderful holiday. Other highlights include the fantastic sea view from our beds, delicious suppers each night at the Schooner Inn, and the bonus of cold but otherwise wonderful weather for the entire week. Adrian created plenty of extra opportunities for those who wanted more to go out at 6.30am each morning and again to extend the day. L.M. Hampshire, Apr 24
Got a very good feel for the Isles of Scilly which I have wanted to go to for a very long time. Loved the flora and fauna and the knowledge the guides shared. We had a lovely group of people and visited all the inhabited islands, fitting in with the weather rather than sticking to a rigid plan. Very adaptable according to people’s needs and abilities. Couldn’t fault their attention to detail, communication and experience. M.S. Gloucestershire, Sept 23
We spent a week immersing ourselves in the natural environment of the Isles of Scilly. The guides were excellent and we felt that we had really explored the main animal and botanical highlights of the islands. The Naturetrek team ensured that we had a very comfortable and interesting tour. The hotel was great and the guides were really knowledgeable.  E.H. Derbyshire, May 22
An 8-day birdwatching holiday to the relaxing and beautiful Isles of Scilly. Amazing and unique islands, all of which have their own character. Stayed at lovely hotel, overlooking the harbour at St Mary's with outstanding food and service. The company of the group and tour leader added to the enjoyment. Good birdwatching. The best holiday I've had in years. Attention to detail, booking process and travel arrangements are good and a wide range of holidays and destinations available. The staff are efficient and friendly. On the tours, the tour leader are excellent birdwatchers but also good tour leaders, which is essential on these holidays.  C.B. Hampshire, Apr 22
Naturetrek holiday included birdwatching, information on all types of plants as well as exploring the various islands during the week. It was a fun action packed week. We also enjoyed the historical ruins on St Mary’s and the other islands. Despite Covid we felt very safe travelling with Naturetrek. Our guides were excellent, very knowledgeable about all aspects of the Scillies having travelled there many times before.  S.J. Gloucestershire, Sept 20
We were walking between 4 and 7.5 miles/day in beautiful countryside stopping at intervals to study mainly the birds and plants. It was an ideal way to go walking. We were very lucky with the weather which was mainly sunny with a cool breeze. We visited 5 of the islands. Naturetrek's organisation was excellent and Andrew the leader was extremely well-informed. G.L. Norfolk, May 19
A wonderful week of walking around the Scilly islands, with boat trips to all inhabited islands. Starting in the fog, we had a ghostly introduction to the islands, arriving in the mist on a ferry blasting its foghorn. Then the sun came out, and we walked at a leisurely pace all day every day (when not on a boat), pausing to bird-watch and identify flowers with our excellent Naturetrek guide. Boat trips took us to see shearwaters, storm petrels, seals, puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fishermen out catching pollack. The unique mix of colourful coastline, exotic flowers and a medley of birds, including some exotic migrants, is unbeatable so near to the UK mainland. I'm seduced by the Scillies! V.J. Monmouthshire
Overall, the holiday met all our expectations and our trip leader was an excellent guide and host from dawn to dusk. Mr & Mrs G. Berkshire
This was my first Naturetrek holiday and I chose a destination I knew a little as I wanted to try a wildlife holiday and also as a means to see more of the Scilly Isles. I certainly wasn’t disappointed (on either score!). The food in the bed and breakfast was of a very high standard. We visited a number of cafés during our excursions and this certainly added to the enjoyment of the holiday. Paul's knowledge of his subject and evident love of the islands was passed on to all of us on this trip and provided for a very happy week. Thank you. A.B. Devon
Great leader - Andrew was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Felt very looked after at all times. L.B. Surrey
I wanted to see the Isles of Scilly landscapes and to learn about the birds and natural history and life on the islands. I was more than satisfied. I was particularly pleased that there was more walking than in most nature-based holidays. The leader, Andrew Cleave's, breadth and depth of knowledge of natural history and of the Scillies and his pleasant manner added so much to my enjoyment of the beautiful islands. S.H. Flintshire
Interesting trips to the four islands. The tour leader had very extensive knowledge. E.K. Surrey
I really enjoyed the whole experience. Andrew was brilliant - he is so knowledgeable and interesting. The group size was good too - not too big or too small. Each day was different and we explored as much of the Isles as was possible but it never felt rushed. There was always plenty of time but enough activity. I loved it! Walking, boat trips, beautiful scenery, bird-watching, botany, history, sunshine - fabulous! M.D. Derbyshire
Naturetrek guide - A. Cleave was excellent. Excellent boat trips to see islands and flora and fauna. Walks around islands, identifying wildlife - the Scillies totally seduced me! The group was small and we all got on - so was very good socially too. It was absolutely great! Thank you. M.R. Devon
The fantastic knowledge, ability and infectious enthusiasm of our guide Andrew. Not only bird life & habitats, flowers' habitats, butterflies & moths, but also geology, archaeology and ice cream & chocolate cake. V.A. Oxfordshire
Lovely small group and excellent trip leader. A.A. Oxfordshire
Thank you once again for a most interesting and enjoyable holiday; a comprehensive experience of the Isles of Scilly. The success of this trip was particularly down to the excellent leader Andrew Cleave. His knowledge and insight are invaluable; a remarkable all round naturalist. Mr & Mrs C. Leicestershire
All very enjoyable. Excellent boat trip to visit the outer islands and view seals and seabirds. Whole trip was well planned and coordinated. Excellent, highly knowledgeable guide (Andrew Cleave) who was also good company and very helpful and amiable. S.C. Buckinghamshire

Discover the wonderful wildlife and glorious gardens of the Isles of Scilly

tour isles of scilly

On the tranquil Isles of Scilly you'll find that life passes by at a more peaceful pace. These isles are famous for their stunning scenery, botanic gardens and powder-soft beaches. On this six-day trip you'll discover why so many people consider the Isles of Scilly to be the UK's most idyllic archipelago.

This tour will take you to many of the islands' most unforgettable locations. You'll visit the sub-tropical Tresco Abbey Garden, described as "Kew without the glass", the rugged coastlines of Bryher and the quaint harbours of St Martin's.

You'll be delighted by the range of wildlife to be spotted on the Isles of Scilly, with many species that can't be seen anywhere else in the UK. The head of the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, Julian Branscombe, will give a talk to explain the trust's work and give you an insight into the Isles' native wildlife, which includes porpoises, dolphins, seals, and many species of birds.

For travellers departing April 2024, you'll stay at the stylish and comfortable The Atlantic on St Mary's, which will serve as your base for the trip. Here you can enjoy flavourful cuisine made with seasonal local ingredients, as well as exceptional views across the harbour.

For travellers departing September 2024, you'll stay at the Star Castle Hotel on St Mary's. This historic building dates back to 1593 and boasts a heated indoor swimming pool and secluded, peaceful gardens. You could even sample seafood caught by the owner from the hotel's boat.

"I wanted to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in the Scillies. It was all planned so well. The hotel was excellent along with the food everywhere we went. Thank you all." - October 2022 Guest

You will need to pre-book and pre-select most of your meals before your departure due to group size. This is a busy and full itinerary, so a good degree of mobility is required to get the most out of this trip, which involves lots of walking and getting in and out of boats.

Today you'll arrive at Penzance and meet your tour group at the departure terminal for the Scillonian ferry. Here you'll meet your expert tour manager who will greet you and assist you with check-in.

Once you arrive on St Mary's you'll make your way to The Atlantic in Hugh Town (April 2024 departures) or Star Castle (September 2024 departures) and begin to explore your surroundings. In the evening you'll have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

There's a sandbar that links St Agnes with the tiny neighboring island of Gugh, where you'll find white sand and crystal-clear water.

You'll tuck into lunch at a local pub before taking a fascinating marine wildlife cruise, where you have a chance to spot some of the special animals and birds who call the Scillies home.

After your final breakfast your hotel you'll enjoy some free time on St Mary's before taking the Scillonian ferry back to Penzance.

8 of the best things to do on the Isles of Scilly

The UK is blessed with an array of potential destinations for anyone who wants to swap far-flung destinations for a staycation.

While city breaks, rural retreats and coastal breaks are often on the domestic traveller’s hitlist, Britain’s islands also offer a chance to feel like you’re heading overseas while leaving the passport at home.

The idyllic Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall are one such enticing option, home to just over 2,000 inhabitants across the five main islands of St Mary’s, Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes and St Martin’s.

This little archipelago that lies almost 28 miles southwest of Land’s End is an ideal spot for a staycation that feels like a trip abroad, with an array of charming towns, a sub-tropical climate and white sand beaches lapped by Caribbean-esque aquamarine waters.

Here’s our pick of must-do activities and attractions to tick off during a trip to the UK’s southernmost isles.

Visit all the (inhabited) Isles

Although the Isles of Scilly total 150, only five of these are inhabited. St Mary’s will be your first stop on the Isles, as it’s home to the main airport and ferry terminal. A good base for your trip, it also houses many of Scilly’s historical attractions.

It’s easy to hop between here and the other islands thank to regular boat services. The other four main isles are Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes and St Martin’s. Tresco – a well-maintained island that is privately owned – is the site of the Tresco Abbey Gardens, one of the Isles’ most popular tourist sites, and laid-back St Martin’s is home to a plethora of beaches that are reminiscent of those in the Caribbean , plus has its own vineyard you can tour.

Bryher and St Agnes are the two smallest inhabited islands in the archipelago (their populations are around 90 and 70 people respectively), and neither is short on natural beauty and charm. Rugged Bryher can sometimes be walked to from Tresco at low-tide and is host to a famous artist’s studio, while unspoilt St Agnes has flower fields, stone stacks and cairns dotted across its ivory-sand beaches.

Embrace nature

Though only 28 miles away from the mainland, the natural landscape and wildlife on these islands are pleasantly different. The entire archipelago has been a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1975, with its dramatic granite cliffs, wide sandy bays, tropical flora and heathlands.

The azure waters that surround the isles contain coral reefs and natural harbours that house marine habitats. At night the skies come alive with stars – each island has a designated Dark Skies Discovery site, with the Milky Way potentially visible due to a lack of light pollution.

The small human population has allowed wildlife to thrive too. You may spot grey seals, dolphins, a range of freshwater and saltwater fish and even the odd sea turtle or basking shark. On land, keep your eyes peeled for endemic animals and birds that are rarely (if ever) seen in the rest of the UK: the Scilly Shrew, St Martin’s Ant, Scillonian Specked Wood Butterfly and Scilly Bee are all unique to the Isles, while puffins, oystercatchers, kittiwakes, herring gulls and Manx shearwaters are all often spotted.

Hit the beach

Home to roughly 35 beaches, the Isles of Scilly is one of the most untouched, tranquil seaside destinations in the UK. These beaches can rival far more exotic locations, with fine white sands that ease into deep blue waters, surrounded by low heathland and grassy dunes and backed by verdant hills and rocky cliffs.

Each island has its own selection of sandy stretches; St Martin’s offers Great Bay, Little Bay and Higher Town Bay, all often voted among the best beaches in the UK. On Tresco, Pentle Bay is another “best beaches” list-topper , and Appletree Bay and Old Grimsby offer similarly wide expanses of unspoilt sands.

The smaller islands have a range of even quieter beaches, from the sheltered Rushy Bay and Great Porth on Bryher to the more rugged Periglis Cove and Beady Pool on St Agnes.

You’ll find a mix on the largest island of St Mary’s – head to the tiny Watermill Cove or the secluded Pelistry Bay for a quiet spot, or visit Porth Mellon or Town Beach for something close to the largest settlement, Hugh Town.

Get on the water

The Isles’ vast expanse of sea and range of beaches also bring a variety of water-based activities. Sea swimming is popular as many of the beaches have calm, safe waters (though it is best to avoid swimming in areas where there are sand bars, including Pelistry). Water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding , kitesurfing, coasteering, snorkelling and deep sea diving are also popular, offering the potential to cavort with seals and even explore some of the near 1,000 shipwrecks.

If you prefer to stay physically out of the water, there are a range of boat-based activities, from fishing trips and wildlife safaris to sailing and self-guided motorboat trips.

Exlore the great outdoors

There are plenty of outdoor pursuits to enjoy on dry land. For a start, the isles are made for walking; the highest point is just 51 metres above sea level, making for easier, more relaxed walks, while there are dozens of trails – 30 miles worth on St Mary’s alone – that will take you along the coast, through heaths and across the entire length of these compact islands. There are also several expert-led options with resident guides who know all about the islands’ flora and fauna.

Bikes are a popular way to get around the islands, with companies including St Mary’s Bicycle Hire providing rates from £22 for a 24-hour rental. For something a little different, St Mary’s Riding Centre offers one-hour horseback treks along beaches, coastline and tracks for £50 per person. Alternatively, head to the Isles of Scilly Golf Club for sensational views as you play.

Activities such as hiking, climbing and yoga are available on some of the isles, but it’s worth bearing in mind that much of the infrastructure for activities is located on St Mary’s.

Discover the history

There’s a remarkable assortment of historic sites: 239 to be exact, making it the place with the highest density of historic sites in the UK. These range from shipwrecks and 17th-century lighthouses to English Civil War castles and prehistoric settlements.

For prehistoric sites, the best destination is St Mary’s. The island possesses a range of Bronze Age burial sites – from Bant’s Carn to the Porth Hellick Down Burial Chamber – and is the site of Halangy Down Ancient Village, an Iron Age settlement with two entrance graves and several standing stones.

If you want to discover more recent and military history, Tresco contains the widest selection of fortifications (though the famous Garrison, used from the 1500s up until World War II, sits on St Mary’s). The most well-known are King Charles’ Castle and Cromwell’s Castle, named accordingly by Royalist and Parliamentary forces during the Civil War in the 1650s. The Old Blockhouse, built in the 1540s and overlooking Old Grimsby Harbour, is the oldest fortification.

Other landmarks include the six lighthouses (dating from between 1680 and 1911), the Isles of Scilly Museum, and the Valhalla Collection, which showcases around 30 figureheads from shipwrecked vessels through the years.

Travel to uninhabited islands

With some surrounded by shipwrecks and others with remains of early Christian chapels, the Isles of Scilly’s 140 or so uninhabited islands are a great opportunity to enjoy a relaxing day away from it all. The best-known are Samson, St Helen’s and Tean, all with a mixture of remains, ruins and deserted beaches.

The best way to see these islands is by boat. There are options to hire your own sailing boat, motorboat or charter boat, as well as opportunities to ride on glass-bottom boats and go on wildlife safaris. One-hour guided tours start from £17 per adult, while a day tour in a yacht costs around £250 per person. For self-guided hire, motorboats start from £90 for a three-hour hire (£130 for an entire day), and dinghies and day boats start at £33 for one hour.

Sample local cuisine

The wide-scale use of local and seasonal produce on the Isles, from wine produced by the UK’s most southerly vineyard to fish caught by a local fisherman, is what typifies its excellent cuisine.

The Turk’s Head pub greets visitors to St Agnes, while the friendly Coastguards Lookout cafe provides standard cafe fare. On St Martin’s, the family-run Sevenstones Inn features classic pub food in a rustic setting, and Adam’s fish and chips shop offers fish caught earlier in the day by the owner himself. Despite its size, Bryher also has a number of well-regarded eateries, from Olivia’s Kitchen cafe, with soups, sandwiches and hot drinks, to the Crab Shack, a venue serving a simple menu of scallop starters, large crabs and accompaniments.

On Tresco, the New Inn provides simple pub food and a sunny terrace, while The Flying Boat’s tapas and deli menus offer a taste of something different. St Mary’s has the widest variety of places to dine and drink, from relaxed eateries such as Hugh Street Cafe and a barbecue-style restaurant The Beach to more upmarket places such as the Star Castle Hotel, The Hall at St Mary’s Hall Hotel and On The Quay. Wherever you go, fresh local crab is likely to be on the menu.

Exploring history and wildlife on the UK’s storied coastal paths

From jagged cliffs rising out of the sea to sandy coves and quaint fishing villages, the UK's coastline has some incredible walking trails. Here are five of the best locations.

The UK has just over 11,000 miles of coastline, encompassing UNESCO World Heritage sites, dinosaur fossils, surfing beaches, pirate coves and cliffs. For now, walkers cannot officially walk the entire periphery; there's no continuous trail and some stretches are off-limits, but there are some fine stretches to get a handle on this island nation. From a route which encompasses some of the best-preserved Neolithic ruins in Europe to an island-hopping adventure across the Isles of Scilly, here’s a selection of some of the most dramatic coastal trails as recommended by walking experts HF Holidays .

1. Meirionnydd Coast, North Wales

Which is more astonishing — that around 200 different types of shell comprise the substrate on Wales’s Shell Island, or that someone took the time to count them? Either way, also known as Mochras is a beauty to behold, with its diverse detritus and specklings of wildflowers. Mochras is one of the many attractions that dot the miles of broad, sandy beaches uniquely set against the mountainous backdrop of Eryri National Park (formerly Snowdonia).

To explore the area, embark on this epic eight-day adventure , which starts at Penrhyndeudraeth and trails south across sand dunes, fishing villages and estuarine habitats towards the Dyfi Valley. Harlech Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed medieval fortification, is a particular highlight along this coastal trail — dedicate one to two hours to walk the walls and learn about its illustrious history at the on-site exhibition. On free days, walkers may choose to explore the opulent Italianate village of Portmeirion and the subterranean chambers of Llechwedd Slate Caverns.

2. Orkney & Shetland, Scotland

Abundant wildlife, maritime heritage, unique culture and local crafts — you can expect all of this and more on Orkney and Shetland, two of Scotland’s northernmost archipelagos. Providing stepping stones to Northern Europe, these isles have helped to elucidate early migration patterns on the continent — the Shetland site of Jarlshof stands testament to that, where 4,000-year-old discoveries include Bronze and Stone Age settlements, Norse longhouses and medieval smallholdings. Orkney, meanwhile, is home to one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric settlements, the UNESCO-listed Heart of Neolithic Orkney, with its 5,000-year-old ceremonial stone circles, chambered tombs, communal living quarters and sacred burial sites.

Experience the best of both isles on this eight-day adventure , which includes Marwick, Orkney and Muckle Roe, Shetland. The nine-mile clifftop coastal path from Marwick Bay to the Brough of Birsay is a particular highlight for wildlife lovers, as it overlooks RSPB Marwick Head Nature Reserve. Here, keen twitchers may spot gulls and skuas patrolling the skies, while grey and common seals bob in the waters below. The walk is followed with a visit to explore the mysterious Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness, which, together with Skara Brae and Maes How, form the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.

3. North Cornwall, Southwest England

The lives of the Cornish people have always been inextricably linked to the sea. As such, coastal walks here offer the chance to get up close to the county’s storied, industrial mining heritage. These relics of Cornwall’s past have become county emblems — particularly along the rugged northern coast covered on this eight-day adventure . Starting at the sandy, surfing beach of Treyarnon Bay near Padstow and ending at Cape Cornwall, just four miles north of Land's End, this coastal trail offers all the classic sights of the Cornish coastline, including quiet coves, traditional fishing villages and a mosaic of rare coastal habitats, including saltmarshes, sand dunes and even Atlantic temperate rainforest.

Along the route, look out for the early 20 th -century tin mines of Geevor and the   19 th -century tin mine Botallack, the latter of which was made famous by BBC’s Poldark   series. It’s worth keeping an eye on the blue horizon, too, where fin, minke and humpback whales may be spotted in ever-increasing numbers.

4. Somerset & North Devon, Southwest England

Stretching a mammoth 630 miles through Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, the South West Coastal Path is the UK’s longest national trail and perhaps one of the most picturesque of all, encompassing wild countryside, sweeping seafront panoramas, pretty ports and historic county towns.

Tackle a portion of the epic coastal trail on this eight-day adventure , which begins at the quaint seaside resort of Minehead in Somerset and ends at the secluded sands of Croyde Bay in northern Devon. Porlock Weir, a bustling harbour village surrounded by steep wooded slopes, verdant farmland and heather-covered moorlands, is a particular highlight along the trail. Walkers will also enjoy visiting Lynton and Lynmouth, two sister villages dubbed ‘the Switzerland of England’ due to their distinct Alpine appearance. They also provide the gateway to Devon’s Valley of the Rocks, a dramatic dry valley known for its rugged, prehistoric landscape and spectacular views of the Bristol Channel.

5. Isles of Scilly, Southwest England

With its white-powder-sand beaches and sparkling sapphire waters, the Isles of Scilly are often touted as Britain’s somewhat chillier answer to the Caribbean coast. So remote is this archipelago, lying 28 miles off the southwest coast of mainland Cornwall, that little has left its mark: only five islands are inhabited, while the other 140 provide a haven for seabirds and other wildlife.

Drink it all in by hopping between the islands on this seven-day adventure , which traverses the archipelago via a series of dramatic coastal trails. Here, walkers can discover peaceful, secluded bays on Bryher, breathtaking landscapes dotted with wildflowers and archaeological ruins on St Agnes and St Martin’s, and wild heathland, rocky coastlines and 16th and 17th century castles on Tresco. The latter is also home to Abbey Garden, a botanical paradise with more than 3,000 species of plants and trees, and Valhalla museum, which houses figureheads salvaged from shipwrecks from around the islands' shores.
