We included this stroller bassinet on our list because it’s a newborn essential that many parents are already packing for travel day without realizing that it doubles as an overnight sleep solution. This bassinet is compatible with UPPAbaby’s popular Vista , Minu , Cruz , and Ridge strollers. For parents who would rather not place it on the floor inside, the brand sells a chic bassinet stand that doubles as a hamper.

Though not as compact as some others on our list, this bassinet collapses for travel and comes in 10 modern color choices. It boasts an extendable, UPF-50 sun shade, a breathable mattress pad with a vented base, and a bug shield. Although the mattress cover is machine-washable, the canopy and sidewalls are not. 

Lightest weight: Munchkin Brica Travel Pod

Although it comes with a high price tag, the Nuna has all the bells and whistles. It comes with an organic cotton sheet, an insect net, a bassinet attachment, a durable travel bag, and a vented mattress that pulls heat and humidity away from tiny sleepers. This bed opens in seconds and folds down with one hand, even with the bassinet attached. Although the mattress cover is machine washable, the Nuna’s other fabrics are not.

Phil & Ted’s Traveller Full-Size Travel Crib

Why shelly recommends it:.

It only weighs 7 lbs.–compare that with other play yards! Add to that its terrific versatility and its hard to find a better travel bed. Use it from birth on up through three years (or more), indoors and out. Breathable mesh panels let you take this to the park and beach just as easily as Grandma’s house (where rubber feet will protect her floors).

The self-inflating air mattress works much like a Therm-a-Rest (or backpacker’s mattress), providing good insulation from the cold ground as well as padding from hard floors. An optional UV-protective cover fits over the top to offer protection outdoors (though you’ll have to throw a beach towel or something over the sides for sun protection now that they are 100% mesh (please let me know when you’ve finished thinking that one through, Phil&Ted).

The Traveler also has a zipping side panel to allow in and out access for playtime on the beach, and for older children who are ready to come and go on their own from their own travel bed. It stands 51″ x 24.8″ x 31″ when open, and folds to 24.8″ x 8.6″ square packed in its carrying case.  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

At 11 lbs. the Travel Crib Light weighs a little more than Phil & Ted’s full-size travel crib, costs around $100 more, and you probably won’t be able to use it as long (it also doesn’t offer the unzipped side self-access for older children).

That said, the easy to assemble BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is worth it to some parents for the 1-minute (or less) set-up time, space savings when folded and set-up, and eco-certified softer fabrics–every bit of which can be gently washed in the machine.

In theory, the BabyBjorn Travel Light can be used for newborns up to around 3 years old (older children may be happier with the longer mattress of the Phil & Ted or Peapod Plus, both of which they can freely come and go from when they’re ready). The Peapod Baby Bed for Travel

Helps create your “tent within a tent” safely on cold camping trips, and gives a clean, safe place for baby to snooze bug-free, whether indoors or out. Folds into its own carrying case at 16.5″ diameter and 3″ thick, then pops up when needed to 46″L x 28″W x 18″H.

The Peapod Plus weighs less than 3 lbs. Although this is recommended for  1 to 3 years, you may prefer the slightly larger Peapod Plus, which can be used on through the preschool years (see below).  Find it online at:   Amazon.com

The Peapod Plus Travel Bed

The Peapod Plus can be used from infancy well through preschool, and includes a lightweight sleeping bag. In addition to the UV mesh found in the smaller Peapod, the Plus also has roll-down nylon sides for added wind protection.

Other differences: The poles used in the Plus are thinner and more lightweight than the very heavy-duty ones used in the original above, keeping its weight down, but at the cost of some stability (if you have rowdy rompers in the house, you may prefer the original Peapod). Travels at 19″ diameter and 6.5″ thick in its carrying case. Unfolds to 52.5″ x 34″ x 25″.

Fold ‘n Go Infant Travel Bassinet

This portable folding infant bassinet sets up in 10 seconds (okay it took us 20 the first time, but…) and features a rigid steel frame with four-point Safe-T-Lock System , providing a sturdier alternative to some baby travel beds with soft sides. Mesh side panels also allow for better air circulation.

The Brica Fold N Go bassinet folds to 22″ at its widest point x 16″ x 2″ thick and weighs less than 3 lbs. Unfolds to 30.5″L x 22″W x 10″H with an included 29″ x 18″ foam mattress with cover. The Snuggle Nest by Baby Delight Folding Infant Travel Bed

The very popular Snuggle Nest has been improved with new safety features, including ventilation through breathable sidewalls and an optional 1.5″ incline wedge to help elevate baby’s head–very helpful should a little nose get stuffy during your travels.

This model of Snuggle Nest plays soft music or womb-like sounds and includes a convenient night light you’ll be glad to have when checking on baby in an unfamiliar hotel room. Cover can be removed and washed.

What I don’t like about this newer model is that the wrap-around bumper means it won’t last as longer for taller/longer babies, and the new “vented” side walls actually look less breathable than the earlier mesh used.

First Years Close and Secure Folding Infant Travel Co-Sleeper

Baby travel beds with a built-in, battery-powered night light are few and far between. This co-sleeper also adds an extra measure of protection, buffering your baby from head to toe, making it a suitable sleeping spot for infants both in the “family bed” and out.

As mentioned, it features a built-in night light, which can be helpful for late-night checks, especially when staying in new and unfamiliar places. Machine washable cover and sheet included. Summer Infant Travel Bed with Toy Bar and Shoulder Strap

Great for the airport and possibly even on the airplane. It starts out folded into a travel bag with a shoulder strap and bottle pockets on each end. Then, when you need a clean, safe spot for baby to stretch out while you await your flight, just unfold this portable baby bed and the toy bar is already in place.

What’s that? There’s NOT a changing table in the lavatory on your flight? No problem. This will give you a clean, workable surface with no-roll sidewalls to use either on the airplane seat, floor, or–if the toilet design suits–in the lavatory over the closed lid. Oh, right! The Shrunks Inflatable Portable Bed for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Great solution for occasional visits to Grandma’s house, car trips, and camping (but at 6 lbs. and still bulky when deflated, you probably don’t want to pack this portable bed on the plane).

The air mattress insert is the same size as a standard crib mattress, and you can use it with your own crib/toddler bed sheet sets. (If your child is already pushing the limits of the toddler bed, take a look at the kid-size inflatable travel bed that fits a twin-size sheet .)

Make the most of extra beds where you find them by easily adding these portable bed safety bumpers to hotel beds, guest beds, cruise ship berths, and then some.

Keeping [a] routine is important too, says Dr. Elizabeth Murray, a pediatrician at Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. “Trying to incorporate a regular bedtime routine can be helpful as maybe the exact sleep surface/surroundings will be different, the routine will be familiar,” says Dr. Murray.

The mattress and the inflatable “bed frame” were both ready to go in less than five minutes, although we did note that a setup partner was helpful to keep the mattress from losing air after the pump nozzle was removed.

One major disadvantage to inflatable mattresses? They have a tendency to puncture or lose air overnight. At best that leaves your toddler uncomfortable on a hard floor; at worst, it can be a safety risk if the mattress’s sides trap your child. The bed has a secure double plug, which is very resistant to curious little fingers and unlikely to spring open on its own during the night. The crib legs lock into place, and the mattress attaches to four corner straps to keep it from shifting.

Unlike some portable cribs, this one is very easy to clean. The exterior fabric and the mattress cover can be removed from the frame and machine-washed, and the rest of the bed is easily wipeable. Although this travel bed option isn’t as compact as an inflatable mattress, we found it surprisingly light. When packed into its included carrying case, it fits easily in a standard car trunk. This crib is significantly pricier than other similar options, but its durability means it can be used for multiple kids and handed down.

Inflatable mattresses can feel bulky and unwieldy when deflated and packed, but at just over six pounds, this Hugbino portable mattress is lightweight and extremely portable. The mattress comes with its own pump, and is easy to assemble in less than five minutes. We did find that inflating the mattress was easiest with two people — otherwise it was a challenge to close the nozzle plug before air started escaping. Like many toddler beds, this one has bumpered sides to keep little ones from rolling off during the night; these bumpers are slightly lower than some models, so if you have an incredibly active sleeper, you may want to consider bolstering the sides with additional pillows or stuffed animals for security.

We also found it just as easy to store as it is to set up: the mattress packs easily into its included carry bag. This bed’s small footprint when packed and light weight make it a great option for stashing at a frequent travel destination like grandma’s house.

This memory foam mat from Milliard is a light and comfortable option for toddler sleep. The mat comes with a removable bamboo cover that can be machine-washed, and the mat itself can be spot-cleaned as needed. It folds up easily and stacks nicely, but since it doesn’t deflate, it’s not as compact as an air mattress and does take up storage space. Milliard sells carrying cases for this mattress, but they need to be purchased separately.

Because this mat is memory foam, it needs 48 hours with all zippers open to reach its highest comfort level before using it for the first time. The process is worth the wait, however, as we found this to be one of the more comfortable options for naptime we’ve seen.

Other Toddler Travel Beds We Liked

These toddler travel beds did not make our final list yet still stood out from the pack. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Intex Dura-Beam Standard Series Pillow Rest Raised Airbed : This bed is durable and comfortable, and the price is hard to beat. But because it’s built like a standard twin bed — it’s on the large side, with no bumper or sides — it’s better suited for older kids versus toddlers.

Guava Baby Lotus Travel Crib : We loved the Guava’s attractive and easy-to-use carry bag. However, it is heavy when packed, and we were torn on the usefulness of the zippered opening in the side, which makes the bed less secure for mobile toddlers. Ultimately we preferred the setup and breakdown on the similarly priced BabyBjorn model.

The team spent a day in our New York City lab, putting 20 toddler beds to the test to determine ease of use, portability, ease of cleaning, and overall value.

To get a sense of how easy these products would be to use with a cranky toddler on hand, we practiced setting up each bed one-handed, watching a timer closely — then did the whole thing in reverse and broke each bed down. We weighted the beds down with sandbags, evaluated their durability, and kid testers laid down on them. We considered the hidden nooks and crannies on each bed that might become filled with crumbs or worse, and evaluated how easy it was to get each one spic and span again. Our testing went on for six months to ensure each bed stood the test of time when used by actual children, too.

Tips for Buying a Toddler Travel Bed

Consider your toddler’s sleep needs.

The most important consideration when choosing a toddler travel bed is your individual child’s sleep style and needs. If your child is an active sleeper and tends to roll off of surfaces, you’ll want to choose a bed that has higher bumpers to keep them on the mattress. And if your toddler is a wanderer, you may want a fully contained space like a travel crib to keep them safe. If you can, try to approximate your child’s home sleeping environment as closely as possible. If they’re still in a crib at home, purchase a crib for travel ; if they’re using a convertible toddler bed with a railing and high headboard, look for a travel bed with a similar cozy feel.

Balance comfort with packability and safety

A plush, soft sleeping surface might seem like a recipe for better sleep , but when it comes to traveling with a toddler, simpler is usually better. A thinner inflatable mattress, for example, will not only pack down smaller, but will be safer if it malfunctions and deflates on your child overnight. “Remember, many of the inflatable mattresses are made from thick or stiff material that a toddler might not be able to push off of themself,” Dr. Murray notes. “The thinner or more standard mattress size inflatable mattresses are better for those 1–3 years of age.” And most packable cribs have thin mattresses for a reason: a firm sleeping surface is safest for younger kids. “You want to choose something that is sturdy but has the normal safety features of a relatively firm mattress and stable sides,” says Dr. Murray.

Match size, weight, and age recommendations to your child

Most travel toddler beds have clear recommendations for age range and maximum height and/or weight for use. Pay close attention to these guidelines and match them to your child, but use your own judgment as well to ensure you’re choosing the safest option. Although most inflatable mattresses are designed for ages 3 and up, some will claim to be suitable for any age. If your toddler is on the younger side or moves around a lot while sleeping, you’ll want to avoid mattresses altogether — even those that claim to be safe for littler ones — and opt for a portable crib-style bed.

Factor in your final destination

Another crucial consideration when you’re purchasing a toddler travel bed is what type of environment you’re traveling to. “Are you staying in a hotel room, which is usually pretty sparse but might have loose or stray electrical cords? Or are you staying at grandparents' where there may be stairs that aren't protected by a baby gate or other low hazards since the house might no longer be child-proof?” Dr. Murray notes. Travel locations with more potential hazards might require portable cribs or mattresses that better contain your toddler, whereas a fully childproofed friend’s or grandparent’s house might offer more flexibility for your toddler to roam and explore.

You may not be in the habit of wiping down your full-size air mattress after every set of overnight guests, but trust us, you’ll want to clean your toddler travel bed frequently. The Adventure & Travel Bundle we tested comes with several thoughtful accessories, including a mosquito net, an SPF 55 shade cover for sun protection , and two fitted sheets.

It was very easy to inflate and only took us five minutes to put together , which is great when traveling with little kids. And since it's light and comes with a small bag with handles , it's not hard to move around. The mattress also has a removable and washable cover that can be spot-cleaned and dries quickly, so your little one can get back to bed after any accidents. The KidCo PeaPod Plus travel tent was one of the most lightweight and easily transportable toddler beds we tested, and setup was almost non-existent: the tent simply pops up when it’s removed from its travel bag. It has two layers: a see-through screen window/door layer and a blackout material to make it dark inside the bed.

The lightweight material is also incredibly easy to clean, as evidenced by our tester’s admission that her son threw up on it during their trial run. “It was super simple to wipe up the mess, apply some cleaner, and wipe it dry. There are no real nooks or crannies that couldn't be cleaned or easily reached, even on the underside,” she reported.

SlumberPods are a pretty genius concept; they’re essentially a ventilated, breathable tent that darkens a child’s sleep space. The SlumberTot toddler air mattress conveniently fits inside a SlumberPod, making it a great solution if you find yourself sharing a hotel or guest room with your child and need some separation. We just tested the inflatable SlumberTot mattress, not the entire SlumberPod system. We found the mattress maintained firmness during the night and was durable, thick, and easy to wipe down. The side bumpers are high enough to prevent children from rolling off the bed. When deflated, the mattress easily fits in a suitcase, though it also has its own carrying case with a shoulder strap. The SlumberTot is also the only inflatable toddler bed we tested that claims to be phthalate-free.

The Shrunks Inflatable Toddler Travel Bed comes with a pump and inflates easily and quickly thanks to a valve that prevents air from escaping, and it’s compatible with standard-sized crib sheets. (The pump also features a handy reverse setting to draw air out when it’s time to deflate it.)

An inner mattress attaches to an outer bed rail that prevents kids from rolling off, and the phthalate-safe PVC is thick and durable and easily wipes clean. Unlike other mattresses that look similar, the Shrunks’ inner mattress is attached to the outer bumper, which can be seen as a convenience to some (no sliding around) or an obstacle (it can be difficult to get the fitted sheet on the mattress when both the mattress and bumpers are inflated).

We tested the retro convertible, which is available in pink or blue. Other fun shape options include castles and speedboats. The company’s beds are modeled on the brand’s similarly designed pool floats. 

The beds come with a durable carrying case with a shoulder strap . We like that the thick, flocked material of this inflatable mattress is especially soft on the sleeping surface, an important feature since you can’t make this bed up with a fitted sheet.

This nearly puncture-proof toddler travel bed can be used during trips or at home as a transitional bed for toddlers who are still getting used to not having crib walls. A 120-volt electric pump (and three universal nozzles) is a game changer that makes inflating the bed a breeze. We love how quickly and easily this bed comes together: It took us five minutes to blow up both parts of the bed and attach a fitted sheet. Best of all, we didn’t even need to glance at the instructions while doing so.

The EnerPlex has bumpers along three sides, and the removable coil-beam mattress rests snugly inside the outer shell and fits a standard crib sheet. Even though the bed is bulky, it comes with a large carry bag that you can wear as a backpack. We also like that the electric pump comes with an adapter for your car , making it ideal for camping. It can be wiped down and the crib sheet can be tossed in the laundry for cleanup.

This folding mattress doesn't require any assembly—just take it right out of the box. If your toddler spills a drink or has an accident on this mattress, the good news is that it's easy to clean: It has a removable bamboo cover that can be machine-washed and the mattress underneath can be spot-cleaned.

While it doesn’t come with a storage bag, you can purchase a dedicated carry case with handles for it for $19. While it takes up more storage space than an inflatable mattress, it can also be a fun addition to the playroom for climbing, fort-building, and other creative play.

• Hiccapop Inflatable Toddler Travel Bed : Our testers liked the Hiccapop Toddler Travel Bed, but found that too much air leaked out once the pump nozzle was removed. Design-wise, the Hiccapop is similar to the Shrunks Toddler Travel Bed, which solves the airflow problem with a valve that prevents air from escaping and is less expensive.
• USHMA Portable Travel Inflatable Air Bed : This is a no-frills inflatable bed. At $46, it was the cheapest of all the beds we tested, but that price comes with some slight inconveniences. Testers complained that it doesn’t come with a pump and the strap-free carrying case was uncomfortable to carry.

Our parent testers tried out 20 children’s travel beds and more than 20 pack-and-plays in the Parents Testing Lab and in the real world; in our own homes, on the road, at the park, and on the beach. The beds were tested for overnight sleep and naps, and the ages of the children testing the mattresses ranged from 10 months to 4 years old. The most important attributes we considered when testing were:

• Ease of Use: Upon receiving their toddler travel beds, testers timed how long it took to set up every bed they tried. We asked them to assemble the beds with one hand, if possible, noting which ones required both hands or even another adult to help. We then tested how well the toddler travel beds hold a toddler's weight using a 25-to-30-pound sandbag. We also assessed how hard it was to clean the beds, examining hard-to-reach areas and taking note of the material and how it wiped down. We noted whether standard crib sheets fit on it. Then, we tried to disassemble the beds one-handed. After breaking them down, we considered how long it took and how difficult it was to place the bed inside its carry bag (if one was included). 
• Comfort: Comfort is key to a good night’s sleep, and for our top picks, we wanted to make sure our parent testers and their children were able to feel secure and get a good night's sleep with minimal interruptions. Our child testers slept on their beds at least five times to gauge their experience. 
• Durability: There’s nothing worse than an air mattress that deflates in the night or, even worse, punctures easily. Our testers kept an eye out for the quality of the materials and design, as well as any flaws and deal breakers encountered during use.
• Portability: If you’ll be carrying a toddler travel bed to a park, on a plane, or even just up a flight of stairs, portability is essential. We considered the item’s portability, including how easy it is to pack the bed into its carrying bag, the overall size of the bag, and whether it had a hands-free carrying option.

In addition to lab and real-world testing, we spoke with medical experts to gather their input on how to choose a toddler travel bed and which safety features to look for. We spoke to the following experts:

• Lynelle Schneeberg , PsyD, a pediatric sleep psychologist and author of Become Your Child’s Sleep Coach: The Bedtime Doctor’s 5-Step Guide, Ages 3-10
• Tomomi Hayashi, MD , a pediatrician at Stanford Medicine Children's Health Pediatrics, Los Gatos, CA

Factors to Consider When Buying a Toddler Travel Bed

• Safety: Keeping your toddler safe in their bed is essential. Dr. Hayashi recommends only using toddler travel beds as instructed and never placing them on top of another mattress, bed, or other raised surface. Ensure the bed you’re buying is appropriate for your child’s size and age and doesn’t pose any safety hazards. For anyone looking for an environmentally friendly, healthy sleep space, note that many of the inflatable mattresses we tested are made of PVC, a non-recyclable plastic that usually contains phthalates, which are hidden toxins known to cause smelly and potentially harmful off-gassing. Of all the samples we tested, only the SlumberTot claims to be phthalate-free.
• Comfort: For some toddlers, comfort may mean a favorite blankie or lovie, while others require a crib. Many toddlers enjoy the excitement of any new bed (and can fall asleep anywhere!), while others may balk at the noise or new sensation of an inflatable mattress. To make traveling easier, consider your child’s preferences. 
• Ease of use: If you arrive at your destination with a sleepy child, the last thing you want to deal with is a complicated bed setup. Look for a bed that’s easy to set up and break down, simple to clean and maintain, and includes useful accessories like a pump. Be aware that several inflatable beds on the market do not come with pumps, so read the fine print. You may want to look for bags that allow hands-free carrying. Another consideration is whether the bed is easy to put in its carrying case, so you’re not fighting to pack it up when it’s time to go home. 
• Toddler’s age and size: A few of the toddler beds we recommend are on the smaller side and only appropriate for babies who are not able to climb. Dr. Hayashi explains that the age at which children can transition from a crib to a portable toddler bed will differ. “Once they can climb out of the crib, then you have to transition to either a lower crib or a toddler sleep space. Generally, I like to keep them in enclosed spaces until I know they’re not going to get up and wander,” she explains. While it’s important to purchase a toddler bed that’s appropriate to your child’s size and age, consider whether or not you might also need to lie down with your child and whether the bed you’re considering can handle your weight, too. Most of our portable toddler bed recommendations are big enough for older toddlers to grow into; some can withstand up to 300 lbs.  
• Travel frequency and type: To determine which toddler travel bed is best for you, consider how and where you’ll be using it. Many of our recommendations can easily fit into a suitcase for air travel or road trips. Others are too bulky, so are best left in one place for long-term use, like at a grandparent’s or babysitter’s home. Also consider whether you might need to use your toddler bed outdoors as some of our recommendations feature weatherproof fabrics, sunshades, and netting, while others are not designed for exposure to the elements.

How to Use Toddler Travel Beds Safely 

It’s especially important to ensure your child is safe when sleeping in an unfamiliar place in a bed they’re not accustomed to. These tips can help.

• Follow the Manufacturer's Instructions: “Parents should also practice the same safe sleeping rules they implement at home,” explains Dr. Gans. “Every toddler travel bed has age and weight requirements, so I would definitely check those first and make sure it matches up [with your toddler's age and weight].”
• Secure Assembly: Whether you’re inflating an air mattress with bumpers or assembling a portable tent, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that the sleep surface is firm and will not pose a suffocation risk. You’ll also want to ensure there are no areas that could potentially trap your child, and check for sharp edges, says Dr. Gans: “Corner points are sometimes a place where kids can get clothing caught or get injured.”
• Supervision: Never leave a toddler unattended in a travel bed. In addition to the usual risks associated with bedtime, children sleeping in an unfamiliar environment or who are used to the constraints of a crib might be tempted to explore. Place the bed where you can supervise them at all times since you may not be able to safety-proof rooms the way you can at home, notes Dr. Gans. Dr. Hayashi adds: “If they are climbing in and out or over the side, [or] if they are getting out of bed without an adult aware and wandering their environment,” that could pose a safety risk.  
• Appropriate Sleepwear: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends that all children’s pajamas be snug-fitting to meet the government’s flammability standards. 
• Check for Product Recalls. Dr. Gans recommends researching products on the CPSC website to determine the safety of the products you’re considering and ensure that they haven’t been recalled. 
• Follow Safe Sleep Guidelines: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a safe sleep environment to reduce the risk of all sleep-related deaths in babies. This includes placing your child on their back on a firm, non-inclined sleep surface and avoiding soft bedding, stuffed animals, or other suffocation hazards. 

How to Keep Your Toddler in Bed While Traveling 

A travel bed with inflatable bumpers (which are not recommended for babies) or a pack-and-play can help keep a toddler from rolling onto the floor. If your child is still sleeping in a crib at home, you will probably want to keep them in a pack-and-play or travel crib while traveling. For children who have mastered the art of climbing since they’re easily tipped, a mat or inflatable mattress is the way to go when you’re away from home. To make your child more comfortable, you can also bring along some of their favorite items from home to help them want to stay in bed in a new place.

“The best thing to do when traveling is to bring along items from the child's home bedroom,” recommends Dr. Schneeberg. “Parents can bring along the child's favorite pillow, ‘bedtime buddy,’ and favorite books, for example. If the child is used to a certain night light or a sound machine , these can be brought along as well."
